With changes in the game at the high school level, volleyball records can be difficult to track. Milestones are a little easier. Tuesday night in Haysville, Great Bend sophomore Kya Behr reached one of those milestones with her 1,000th career assist. The No. 9 Lady Panther volleyball team moved to 20-2 on the season with wins against Campus and Goddard-Eisenhower.
Great Bend opened the night with a 25-16, 25-22, 25-16 win against the host Colts. The Lady Panthers defeated Eisenhower 25-22, 25-20 to close out the night.
Great Bend used a committee of attackers on the offensive side against Eisenhower. Behr and senior Cassie Ellegood each put down six kills, and senior Kara Feist and sophomore Alex Mayers each added five. Ellegood was huge on the serve with six aces, and Behr added two. Work in the back row was lighter with 17 digs. Mayers paced the team with five, junior Ava Kaiser added four, and Behr and freshman Mikayla Minton each had three.
Behr finished her freshman campaign with 589 assists. She finished with 13 in the Eisenhower match. Tarynn Kirmer (Stueder), who played at GBHS from 2010-13, has the current school record for 2,449 career assists.
With her six aces in the Eisenhower win, Ellegood now has 36 aced serves on the season. Kirmer also holds that season record with 80 aces in the 2012 season. Ellegood is just 19 aces from climbing into the school's top-10 list for aces in a season.
Great Bend plays host to Emporia and No. 4 Hillsboro (2A) on Thursday.
