UNDATED (AP) — The
field for the 12-team College Football Playoff will comprise five
conference champions and seven at-large selections after the
university presidents who oversee the CFP voted unanimously to tweak
the format. The move to decrease the number of spots reserved for
conference champions from six to five was prompted by realignment,
including the demise of the Pac-12. The original plan for the 12-team
format was to have the six highest-ranked conference champions, with
the top four receiving first-round byes, and six at-large selections.

PROVO, Utah (AP) —
Aly Khalifa had 14 points, seven assists, and seven rebounds to lead
No. 25 BYU to a 78-71 victory over No. 11 Baylor on Tuesday night.
Jaxson Robinson scored 16 points and Trevin Knell added 13 for the
Cougars (19-7, 7-6 Big 12), who earned their third home victory over
a Top 25 opponent this season. Jalen Bridges finished with 15 points
and eight rebounds to lead the Bears. Ja’Kobe Walter and Yves Missi
tallied 13 points apiece for Baylor (19-7, 8-5), which lost for just

— Pop Isaacs scored 19 points and put 23rd-ranked Texas Tech ahead
to stay with a three-point play with 39 seconds remaining as the Red
Raiders rallied late for an 82-81 win over TCU. Texas Tech trailed
69-59 with 6:55 left. Isaacs scored nine of his points after that,
including two more free throws with 12 seconds left. Darrion
Williams, Joe Toussaint and Kerwin Walton each had 14 points for the
19-7 Red Raiders. Emanuel Miller and Avery Anderson III each had 15
points to lead six players scoring in double figures for 18-8 TCU.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.
(AP) — RaeQuan Battle scored 24 points and West Virginia never
trailed in a 77-67 win over UCF. Jesse Edwards added 15 points and 10
rebounds while Quinn Slazinski scored 14 for West Virginia. The
Mountaineers broke a four-game losing streak and moved out of a
last-place tie with idle Oklahoma State. Battle fared much better
than the last time he faced UCF, when he was held to five points and
was ejected on Jan. 23. UCF has lost four straight. Darius Johnson
scored a career-high 29 points and Marchelus Avery added 14 for UCF.
Leading scorer Jaylin Sellers was limited to six points on 1 of 11

men’s college basketball player of the week after a perfect
shooting performance in a rout of then-No. 6 Kansas last week. He was

rebounds against the Jayhawks. Blake Hinson of Pittsburgh is the
runner-up after scoring 27 points in a win over then-No. 21 Virginia,
then hitting nine 3-pointers and scoring 41 points in a win over

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) —
Steven Ashworth scored 16 of his 20 points in the first half as
Creighton built a double-digit lead, and the No. 15 Bluejays knocked
off UConn 85-66 for their first win over a No. 1-ranked team.
Creighton led by 23 points with 10 minutes left but saw its lead cut
to 10 before holding the Huskies scoreless on five straight
possessions, rebuilding their cushion and prompting students to leave
their seats to prepare for their court storming. UConn had its
14-game win streak end three days after it beat then-No. 4 Marquette
by 28 points for one of the most impressive victories of the season.

KANSAS CITY, Mo.
(AP) — Two men have been charged with murder in last week’s
shooting after the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl parade. Court
documents released Tuesday say the men were strangers who pulled out
guns and began firing within seconds of starting an argument.
Missouri prosecutors said at a news conference that Lyndell Mays, of
Raytown, Missouri, and Dominic Miller, of Kansas City, Missouri, have
been charged with second-degree murder and several weapons counts.
The shooting left one person dead and roughly two dozen others
injured. Mays and Miller were shot in the melee and have been
hospitalized since.

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP)
— There are still some premium free agents available in baseball as
the calendar nears March. Two-time Cy Young Winner Blake Snell,
six-time All-Star J.D. Martinez and former MVP Cody Bellinger are
among the players who haven't found a home. Cleveland manager Stephen
Vogt said the game is at its best when the best players are on the
field and he hopes they sign soon. But the sport's general managers
don't seem particularly concerned with the stalemate.

The Oakland Athletics probably won't be in Oakland a whole lot
longer. The franchise is set to move to Las Vegas in a stadium that
the team hopes is ready for the 2028 season. But the next few years
could be rocky. The franchise's uncertain future was enough of a
topic that manager Mark Kotsay addressed the issue in a team meeting
on Monday. He wants to make sure players know his office is open if
there are questions, even though he doesn’t have many answers. It’s
unclear whether the franchise will play its 2025 home games in
Oakland, Sacramento, San Francisco or a minor league stadium in Las
Vegas.

the Boston Red Sox. With the Red Sox ramping up at the start of
spring training, Devers made it clear that he felt the franchise
should have done more to improve the roster over the winter. Devers
batted .271 with 33 homers and 100 RBIs in 153 games last year, but
Boston finished last in the loaded AL East with a 78-84 record. The
27-year-old third baseman finalized a 10-year contract with the Red
Sox in January 2023 that is worth $313.5 million.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) —
Aaron Judge’s big toe is more than a footnote for the New York
Yankees. Judge missed 42 games after tearing a ligament in his right
big toe when he crashed into the right-field fence at Dodger Stadium
last June 3, a big reason the Yankees fell from postseason
contention. Judge says “it’s going to be I think a constant
maintenance I think the rest of my career. Anything with injuries
like that, you just got to stay on top of it so it doesn’t flare up
again.”

Streaming service FuboTV has filed an antitrust lawsuit against ESPN,
Fox, Warner Bros. Discovery and Hulu, which are planning to launch a
sports-streaming venture in the fall. The lawsuit has been filed in
the Southern District of New York. FuboTV is seeking a jury trial.
FuboTV not only wants the proposed joint venture shut down, but it is
seeking cash damages. If the court does not rule to do either, FuboTV
is seeking restrictions on the joint venture so that competition
remains in the marketplace. The streaming services declined to
comment. The Wall Street Journal was the first to report on the
lawsuit.

For the second consecutive day, the Barton Community College baseball team completed a doubleheader sweep over Western Nebraska Community College Monday afternoon at Jimmy Lawson-Danny Biggs Field.

Held to just one hit in the opener, the Cougars benefitted behind five walks and two hit batsmen to earn a 4-1 series clinching victory. Going for the sweep in the nightcap, Barton rallied from an early 1-0 deficit, scoring three unanswered while gaining the separation needed producing a three-run sixth and two-run seventh for an 8-5 game two win in sweeping the series for the eighth straight time over WNCC.

Notching their 28th straight win in the series, the Cougars move their early season record to 6-1 while Western Nebraska heads home for their home opener falling to 1-7 overall.

The 3rd ranked Barton Community College women's track and field team won ten of their twelve events entered this past weekend at the Pittsburg State University's Robert W. Plaster Center to finish runner-up at the KJCCC/Region VI Indoor Championships.

Having a talented stable of everyone placing in the top eight to earn points, the Cougars simply didn't have enough horses in scoring 141 points as Cloud County compiled 180.5 in winning the title with Fort Scott and Colby a distance third at 70 points.

Amongst the performances, Barton swept both the Track and Field Athletes of the meet, recorded 13 personal or season bests, added five new national qualifying tickets, continued its rewriting of the program record book with five etchings, and reset the meet's mile run record.

Barton's post-meet individual awards as chosen by coaches were Sanae Hassnaoui in track after capturing two events including the mile meet record and Jazmine Williamson in field having won the high jump, runner-up in the long jump, and a 4th place in the triple jump.

Setting the program mile run record last week in Arkansas, Hassnaoui came up shy of her best on Sunday with a 4:48.97 but was still good enough to break the 2006 record by nearly eight seconds. The freshman would later compete in the 3000m for the first time collegiately, not only winning by nearly seven seconds but crossed the line in a program 10th fastest time of 10:21.79.

Williamson concluded her three-event weekend with the high jump title with a 1.72m (5-07.75) after placing runner-up to fellow Cougar Chloe Perryman in the long jump by recording her personal best for the second straight week with a 5.89m (19-4.00) mark in the sand. Perryman took the event soaring to a personal best 6.18m (20-3.25) etch her name in the 8th slot in program history.

The duo began Sunday's final day in the triple jump, Williamson again marking a personal best and nationally qualifying mark of 11.34m (37-02.50) to place 4th while Perryman competed in the event for the first time in placing 6th at 10.74 (35-2.75)

Kay-Lagay Clarke's season best of 12.07m (39-7.25) took the triple jump title to join her 60m hurdle crown in a personal best 8.70 for a nice Sunday haul following her 5th placing on Saturday in the long jump on a season best and national qualifying ticket of 5.62m (18-5.25).

Keliza Smith's progression through the season in the sprints was also impressive in clocking personal bests, winning not only the 60m with a 7.44 time but the 200m in 23.99 to improve her program 9th fastest time.

Joining Smith, Clarke, and Hassnaoui as two event champions, Treneese Hamilton swept both the throwing events. On Saturday Hamilton reset her best weight throw to 17.45m (57-03.00 to move a spot up the program all-time list to 6th before moving up the chart again in Sunday's shot put with a 16.06m (52-8.25) heave to jump from 6th to 4th place on the list.

Additional new national qualifying performances were: Shone Walters's first time in the 1000m clocking a 3:02.69 to finish third and Ivanilda Semedo's 15.08m (49-6.00) in the weight throw to place 6th.

3rd ranked Barton women's track and field places runner-up at Region VI

Chasing the title late into the conclusion, the 5th ranked Barton Community College men's track and field team came up short in placing runner-up at the KJCCC/Region VI Indoor Championships.

The Cougars were outpointed in the final three events to compile 119 points over two days at Pittsburg State University's Robert W. Plaster Center, eight shy of Cloud County's winning 127 total and five points ahead of 3rd placer Fort Scott.

Trevon Hamer's Field Athlete of the Meet performance led the Cougars' twenty-one point producing placings as the squad posted either personal or season bests, added three new national qualifying slots, and record a program 7th best relay time in its first attempt.

Hamer's long jump personal best of 7.36m (24-1.75) held Saturday's top spot for two rounds but an opponent's final attempt snatched the title away. Returning for Sunday's triple jump, the national leader left no doubt who the best was by posting the chasing mark in the first round of attempts to eventually add to the final margin by two feet on his final jump for a winning 15.43m (50-7.50) distance.

Like Hamer, fellow freshman Hamza Belkhalfi nearly had a pair of titles, winning Sunday's mile run in 4:16.25 but three hours later had victory snatched in the final ten meters as an early celebration proved costly. Being chased down by a pair of Cloud County runners, Belkhalfi appeared to have the race run but the split flanking by the T-birds provided just enough distraction as the nation's second ranked runner's 2:29.53 crossing was .12 too late in settling for 2nd place.

Christopher Crawford provided Barton its first of three titles, winning Saturday's weight throw with a 17.64m (57-10.00) mark. Christopher Young placed 4th at 16.87m (55-4.00) with Boris Peranovic placing 14th at 13.72m (45-0.00).

Young, who set the program shot put record three weeks ago in New Mexico, didn't have his best on Sunday in setting for the runner-up placing at 17.92m (58-9.50) with Crawford's season best of 17.54m (57-6.50) placing third as Ricardo Hayles finished 5th at 16.37m (53-8.50) concluding the Cougars' 33 points in the two throwing events.

Competing in the 4000m distance medley relay (DMR) for the first time, the Cougars' tandem of Corlando Chambers, Jaden Howell, Adrian Nethersole, and Belkhalfi placed runner-up with a program 7th best ever 10:07.69 national qualifying time.

Additional new national qualifying performances were: Wanyae Belle's 60m personal best 6.81 seconds in prelims, finishing 7th in the finals at 6.87 behind Mekhi Stafford's 5th place 6.80 time after a slim personal faster time of 6.79 in prelims; Jasiah Clapp's 800m best of 1:56.66 to place 10th overall and behind Nethersole 3rd placing 1:54.17 time.

5th ranked Cougars finish runner-up at region track and field championships

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Max Abmas became the 12th player in men's Division I history to reach 3,000 career points and Texas held off Kansas State 62-56 on Monday night.

Abmas, a graduate transfer who played his first four seasons for Oral Roberts University, entered play needing six points to reach the milestone. He finished with eight and has scored 450 points for the Longhorns (17-9, 6-7 Big 12 Conference) this season.

Dylan Disu finished with a game-high 20 points for Texas. He made 5 of 11 shots from the floor and 10 of his 11 free throws, adding eight rebounds and three steals. Tyrese Hunter had nine points and seven boards. Dillon Mitchell totaled eight points and 10 rebounds with a pair of blocked shots.

Arthur Kaluma paced the Wildcats (15-11, 5-8) with 15 points and seven rebounds. Tylor Perry added 13 points and four assists, but he also had six of K-State's 13 turnovers. David N'Guessan pitched in with 12 points and seven rebounds.

Disu had eight points, Mitchell scored six and the pair combined for half of Texas' 22 rebounds as the Longhorns took a 27-22 advantage into halftime. N'Guessan had seven points to keep Kansas State close.

Both teams struggled to 32.3% shooting in the first half. That included Texas missing 10 of 12 attempts from 3-point range and the Wildcats misfiring on 9 of 10. The Longhorns were 5 for 7 at the free-throw line, while K-State made 1 of 4.

Abmas reached the milestone on a jumper with 14:04 remaining in the second half, giving Texas a 35-31 lead. Ithiel Horton followed with a 3-pointer and Hunter's layup capped a 7-0 run as the Longhorns moved in front 40-31.

Kansas State closed within 48-42 on a layup by N'Guessan with five minutes left. Texas pushed its lead to 12 — its largest of the game — but Kaluma had a four-point play and Will McNair added a layup to get the Wildcats within 54-48 with 2:12 left to play.

Cam Carter hit two free throws with 50 seconds remaining to cut K-State's deficit to 56-52, but Disu sank four foul shots in a row to seal it.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. in 2014. The 26 year old from Charlotte, North
Carolina is the sixth different driver to win the 500 for Rick
Hendrick, the winningest team owner in NASCAR history who made his
way to victory lane on the actual 40th anniversary of his first Cup
win. Byron beat Hendrick teammate Alex Bowman as the race ended under
one lap of caution.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.
(AP) — Alex Bowman never saw how the big wreck started that marred
the end of the Daytona 500. He was surprised to learn he triggered
the big one. Bowman sparked the crash that involved nearly two dozen
cars and knocked six former NASCAR champions out of contention in the
Daytona 500. Bowman bump-drafted Hendrick Motorsports teammate
William Byron on the backstretch with nine laps to go when Byron lost
control, turned into Brad Keselowski and pretty much wrecked the
field. Byron and Bowman were the biggest beneficiaries of the melee.
They escaped with little damage to their cars and went on to give
Hendrick Motorsports a 1-2 finish in “The Great American Race.”

Defense wasn’t really played in the All-Star Game, which explains
why the Eastern Conference scored a record 211 points and the game
saw nearly 400 points combined on Sunday night. Points couldn’t
have been easier to come by. But in the regular season — although
some might dispute this — defense does get played. And points just
keep piling up anyway with the NBA on pace to see its highest-scoring
season in more than 50 years with teams averaging more than 115
points per game, up about 1% from last year and up a staggering 15.5%
from where it was a decade ago.

have fired Jacque Vaughn after ending a disappointing first half of
the season with a 50-point loss in Boston in their final game before
the All-Star break. About a year after giving Vaughn a contract
extension, the Nets changed course on Monday and said an interim
coach would be named soon. The Nets are 21-33 and in 11th place in
the Eastern Conference. They dropped five of their last six games.
Nets general manager Sean Marks says “this was an incredibly
difficult decision, but one we feel is in the best interest of the
team going forward.”

was a bruising opening weekend in college baseball for Sacramento
State’s Matt Masciangelo. The Hornets’ junior left fielder was
hit by pitch on eight of his first nine plate appearances against
Loyola Marymount. The teams played a doubleheader Friday, with
Masciangelo plunked three times in the first game and four times in
the second. The teams didn’t play Saturday. He got on base his
first time up Sunday when a pitch grazed his jersey. Masciangelo says
he and his teammates got a good laugh and he was happy to get on base
so often.

The Barton Community College baseball team kicked off the home portion of the season a day later than expected but came away with a doubleheader sweep over Western Nebraska Community College Sunday afternoon at Jimmy Lawson-Danny Biggs Field.

In the opener, the Cougars saw a three-run lead fade into a 5-4 deficit coming to bat in the fifth. Answering the call, the Barton offense produced three of its' games nine hits in the bottom of the fifth to plate three runs in earning a game one 7-5 victory.

In the nightcap, the Cougars jetted out front plating five runs in the first inning to build up an eventual 6-0 lead before withstanding a late Western Nebraska surge adding a pair of insurance runs in the eighth to complete the twin bill sweep, 8-5.

Winners of 26 straight in the series, Barton improves to 4-1 on the season while the loss drops the Cougars of Western Nebraska to 1-5 on the young year.

Purdue claimed the top overall seed over reigning national champion
Connecticut in the first look at the potential top 16 seeds for the
NCAA Tournament. The committee that will select the field of 68
revealed its preliminary list of top teams Saturday. Purdue and then
UConn have topped The Associated Press men’s college basketball
poll for five straight weeks, although with the Huskies at No. 1 in
the Top 25. Houston and Arizona were the other two No. 1 seeds. North
Carolina was the fifth overall seed and headlined the list of
regional 2-seeds. Selection Sunday is March 17.

— Ohio State has stunned No. 2 Purdue in its interim coach’s
debut, winning 73-69 a day after the NCAA Tournament selection
committee picked the Boilermakers as the early favorite to be the No.

Xfinity Series race is now scheduled to be held Monday morning, hours
ahead of the 4 p.m. start for the Daytona 500. Joey Logano is set to

nine. Matsuyama pulled away with three straight birdies. Two of them
were inside a foot from the hole. Matsuyama now has nine PGA Tour
wins. That's one more than K.J. Choi of South Korea.

Shohei Ohtani did
not participate in live batting practice Sunday, and his Los Angeles
Dodgers spring training debut is on hold. Dodgers manager Dave
Roberts said Ohtani, who is coming back from elbow surgery, will not
play in Thursday’s opener against the San Diego Padres. The
two-time MVP signed a record $700 million, 10-year contract as a free
agent in December. Roberts, though, has been encouraged by Ohtani’s
progress physically. The two-time AL MVP won’t pitch this season
following right elbow surgery on Sept. 19, but hopes to be ready as a
hitter by the team's March 20 opener.

Switzerland (AP) — The International Olympic Committee will not
change its rules on age limits to let boxing great Manny Pacquiao
compete at the Paris Games. Pacquiao wanted to come out of retirement
to box at age 45 in the Olympic tournament in Paris where medal bouts
will be staged at the Roland Garros tennis complex. The IOC says it
wrote to Olympic officials in Philippines explaining the age limit of
40 will be upheld. Pacquiao ended his storied career in September
2021 after winning 12 world titles at a record eight different weight
divisions.

Everything had to go right for Great Bend High School junior Jace Schartz to pick up his 100th career win at a difficult Class 5A super-regional Friday and Saturday in Arkansas City. The 157-pound bracket featured the top-five ranked wrestlers in the classification.

That's how everything played out in Ark City. As the No. 4 seed, Schartz opened with an 11-7 decision against Ark City. He won a 13-7 decision against fourth-ranked Eli Means of Bishop Carroll in round two. That pitted Schartz against top-ranked Kade Smith of Hutchinson in the semifinals. Schartz got a late escape point to force overtime, eventually hanging on from the top position in the ultimate tie-break to beat Smith 3-2. The No. 2 and 3 seeds were knocked out in the other half of the bracket. On Saturday, Schartz pinned Goddard junior Eastyn Vieyra for the 157-pound regional title.

Schartz placed fifth at the Class 5A State Championships at 144 pounds as a sophomore. He qualified for state as a freshman at 145 pounds but lost matches to the eventual fourth and fifth-place finishers to come up one win shy of a state medal.

Schartz will be one of 10 Panther wrestlers competing at this year's Class 5A State Wrestling Championships at Park City's Hartman Arena Feb. 22-24.

Schartz claims regional wrestling title with 100th career win

The Lady Panther bowling team will have some momentum heading into the postseason to defend its Class 5A state championship. Thursday in Hays, the Lady Panthers scored all 13 points to secure the Western Athletic Conference championship. The boys defeated Hays 11-2 in WAC standings to finish third in the league.

The Lady Panthers again had four of the top-five series on the day. Zoey Mayberry rolled final games of 234 and 217 to take first place with a high-series of 643. Kaylin Wahlmeier stayed over 200 all day, peaking with a 212 final game to placed second with a 624 series. Emilee Nelson bowled final games of 176 and 178 to take third by a single pin with a 492 series. Paige Heine peaked with a 179 middle game to place fifth with a 484 series. Brooklynn Mayberry rolled a 401 series, and Rionna Rodriguez shot a 344. The girls won all four Baker games, including a 221-147 performance in the second game.

The Great Bend girls tallied 98 WAC points to win the league title. Garden City finished second with 81 points, and Dodge City finished a distant third with 45 points. Five Lady Panthers earned All-WAC honors. Wahlmeier's 202 average led the league, and Zoey Mayberry finished second with a 183 average. Nelson averaged a 167 for sixth, Brooklynn Mayberry placed seventh with a 155, and Heine finished 10th with a 152 average.

On the boys' side, sophomore Joshua Manning closed out the regular-season strong with a second place finish at home and a win at Hays Thursday. Manning rolled final games of 196 and 207 for the high-series at 575. Daegan Miller was headed for the easy win with games of 215 and 215 before falling off to a 123 to place second with a 548 series. Brantley Vsetecka finished strong with a 189 game to secure fifth with a 524 series. Kayden Detrick rolled a 202 in his final game for a 467 series. Quinten Miller finished at 415, and Keaton Wahlmeier rolled a 362 series. The Panthers and Indians split the four Baker games.

The Garden City boys scored 98 points to win the WAC title. Dodge City placed second with 71 points, and Great Bend beat Hays by 13 points to finish third with 40 points. Garden City's Kaden Strasser averaged a 224 in WAC competition to win the individual title by three pins. Miller earned All-WAC honors for Great Bend after placing 11th in the league with a 175 average. Vsetecka claimed the final all-league spot with a 173 average.

Panther bowlers wrap up regular season in Hays

Great Bend High School senior Kasey Kennedy made the most of his final season as a Panther swimmer. Battling injuries all season, Kennedy swam his first 100 butterfly at the Western Athletic Conference Championships to close out the regular season. His 59-flat was good enough to automatically qualify for state.

Kennedy swam a 59.15 as a junior to finish at the bottom of the consolation finals in 16th. Friday, he entered the 2024 Class 5-1A State Swimming and Diving Championships in Topeka as a low seed with his 59.00. He cut nearly two seconds from that time to place eighth in the prelims in 57.26. A 56.31 would have been needed to climb the ladder in Saturday's finals. Kennedy placed eighth overall in 58.32. Collegiate's Derek Yang won the state title by nearly two seconds in 50.75.

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Hunter Dickinson had 20 points and 16 rebounds, and No. 6 Kansas rallied to beat No. 25 Oklahoma 67-57. Johnny Furphy had 15 points and nine rebounds for the Jayhawks. Kevin McCullar added 10 points and eight rebounds. Kansas now has won the last seven meetings with Oklahoma. Jalon Moore had 17 points and Javian McCollum added 15 for the Sooners. MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Micha Peavy scored a career-high 26 points and Jameer Nelson Jr. hit a fadeaway 3-pointer with 1.1 seconds left to lift TCU to a 75-72 win over Kansas State on Saturday. Peavy scored 17 points in the second half for TCU, including 11 in an 20-2 run to take a 10-point lead with seven minutes remaining before the Wildcats worked their way back into the tie. Emanuel Miller, TCU’s leading scorer this season, didn’t have a first-half point but finished with 10. Tylor Perry scored 18 of his 24 points in the second half to lead the Wildcats, making all 12 of his free throws.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Keshon Gilbert had 24 points and eight rebounds to lead No. 10 Iowa State past Texas Tech 82-74 on Saturday. Curtis Jones contributed 12 points for Iowa State, which has won all 15 of its home games this season. Tamin Lipsey and Milan Momcilovic each added 10 points. The Cyclones scored 28 points off of turnovers. Joe Toussaint led the Red Raiders with 16 points. Iowa State visits No. 3 Houston on Monday night with an outright conference lead on the line. The Cyclones and Cougars are currently co-leaders.

HOUSTON (AP) — L.J. Cryer scored a season-high 26 points, Jamal Shead had 16 points and 11 rebounds, and No. 3 Houston beat Texas 82-61 for the Cougars’ third straight win. Cryer and Shead combined to score 23 first half points on 8-of-15 shooting as Houston built a 40-27 halftime lead. Cryer was 6 of 9 on 3-pointers. Houston, which has won 19 straight home games, was a No. 1 seed and the third overall team in the NCAA Tournament selection committee’s reveal of the potential top 16 teams earlier Saturday. Dylan Disu had 16 points and seven rebounds and Chendall Weaver added 11 points for Texas.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Dan Skillings Jr. had 15 points and eight rebounds, Simas Lukosius made a key layup with 11 seconds left and Cincinnati defeated UCF 76-74. Cincinnati led by 14 points early in the second half before the Knights rallied and got within 61-59 with a little less than five minutes left and eventually tied it on Darius Johnson’s three-point play with 1:54 remaining. A UCF turnover gave Cincinnati possession with 38 seconds left with a one-point lead. Lukosius then made a layup for a three-point lead with 11 seconds remaining. Skillings missed two free throws with five seconds left and, up by three, the Bearcats fouled UCF’s Marchelus Avery. He made the first free throw, missed the second intentionally and despite gathering the rebound couldn’t get off a shot as time expired.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — Freshman Ja’Kobe Walter scored 23 points to lead No. 12 Baylor over West Virginia 94-81. Six Baylor players scored in double figures. Jayden Nunn added 20 points for the Bears. Nunn led a second-half outside shooting barrage after the Bears dominated from inside in the first half. The Bears led by 22 points in the second half and have won five of their last six. RaeQuan Battle led West Virginia with 25 points and Jesse Edwards added 21. The Mountaineers have lost a season-high four straight and fell into a last-place tie in the Big 12 with Oklahoma State.

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Freshman Jamyron Keller scored 22 points in his first start to help Oklahoma State beat No. 19 BYU 93-83 on Saturday. Brandon Garrison added 21 points and Quion Williams had 15 for the Cowboys (11-14, 3-9 Big 12), who shot 50% from 3-point range (11 of 22) while limiting their opponent to 8-of-35 shooting from beyond the arc (22.9%). Foussey Traore scored 17 points and Trevin Knell had 16 to lead BYU (18-7, 6-6), which came into the game leading the nation in made 3-pointers.

Glenn caught a three-quarter court pass from Serena Sundell after UCF tied it. Gregory led Kansas State (22-4, 11-3 Big 12) with 19 points. Eliza Maupin had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Sundell and Zyanna Walker had 10 points each. UCF (12-12, 3-11 Big 12) was led by Kaitlin Peterson with 26 points. INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Stephen Curry was on a roll — and it was barely enough to beat Sabrina Ionescu. And fittingly, he won by three. The Golden State star and NBA’s all-time 3-point king beat Ionescu 29-26 in the Steph vs. Sabrina competition at All-Star Saturday night, the first such him-vs.-her event of its kind at the league’s weekend showcase.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Mac McClung has won his second straight NBA Slam Dunk Contest by grabbing the ball out of Shaquille O’Neal’s hands and leaping over him to draw five perfect scores on his final attempt. McClung finished with 98.8 points on his final two dunks, one point ahead of Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown. McClung became the sixth player to win the contest twice and the first to do it in back-to-back seasons since Zach LaVine in 2015 and 2016. Earlier on All-Star Saturday night in Indianapolis, Milwaukee Bucks guard Damian Lillard became the eighth player to win a second 3-point contest and the first to do it in consecutive years since Jason Kapono in 2007 and 2008. Team Pacers won the skills challenge in a tiebreaker.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — The Hall of Fame basketball coach Lefty Driesell has died. His family says Driesell died Saturday at his home in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Driesell’s folksy drawl belied a fiery on-court demeanor. He rebuilt struggling programs and won 786 games over parts of five decades. He was the first to win more than 100 games at four Division I schools. Driesell put Maryland on college basketball’s map and was the coach there when Len Bias fatally overdosed. He also coached at Davidson, James Madison and Georgia State. Charles “Lefty” Driesell was 92.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Patrick Cantlay still has the lead in the Genesis Invitational. It's just not as large as he might have hoped. Cantlay made a soft bogey on the second-easiest hole at Riviera. He shot a 70 and his lead is down to two shots over Xander Schauffele and Will Zalatoris. He'll play the final round with Schauffele, his best friend in golf. They have been partners 23 times in various team events. They have been paired together 20 times on the PGA Tour. And they have played close to 100 practice rounds. At stake is $4 million to the winner.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City was at its highest moment of community pride, celebrating a Super Bowl win, when it experienced one of 21st-century American culture’s most traumatic events — a public mass shooting. By the time it was over, one woman was dead and nearly two dozen other Chiefs fans were wounded. Police now blame a dispute between several people. On Friday, two juveniles were charged with gun-related and resisting arrest charges. Additional charges are expected in Wednesday's post-rally shooting. While it lasted only moments, it has left a knocked-back community struggling to make sense of how something so positive could turn so quickly into something so terrifying and sad.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — After a dismal showing in time trials for Sunday’s season-opening Daytona 500, the Toyota camp roared back and swept the two 150-mile qualifying races that set the field for “The Great American Race.” The wins by Tyler Reddick and Christopher Bell marked the first sweep of the Daytona qualifying races for Toyota since 2014 and have given the automaker hope of a fourth Daytona 500 win. Joey Logano of Team Penske starts on the pole in the first time a Roger Penske car will lead the field to green at the Daytona 500. Rain is expected Sunday and could disrupt the event.

Junior Jace Schartz won a regional title and 10 Panthers qualified for next week's state tournament.Schartz's road to the title was not an easy one. He opened with a pair of decisions, including a 13-7 win against fourth-ranked Elijah Means of Bishop Carroll to reach the finals. There, he needed an ultimate tie break to get by top-ranked Kade Smith of Hutchinson. Schartz picked up a late escape point to force overtime, then hung on from the top position to win 3-2."I got my shot," Schartz said. "I was thinking fireman's, fireman's but he knew it was coming. He had the long arm brace on so I couldn't grip his elbow. I thought, forget it, we're going to stop shooting and take it to double-overtime."In the tie break, Smith took the down position and just needed an escape to advance. Neither wrestler had been able to ride the other for more than 10 seconds."You have to stay tight-waist. I wasn't really hard on the tight waist, and when it came to the third overtime, I knew we had to ride tight tight waist. You've got to be mean with the tight waist. You want to make it where they can't breathe."Two of the top seeds in the other half of the bracket, including third-ranked Josh Berlin of Maize South, were knocked out before the finals. Schartz was able to pin Goddard junior Eastyn Vieyra for the title. He takes a 35-7 record to state.Senior Kaiden Hoffman dropped to No. 6 at 132 pounds heading into a tough bracket but still pulled out a third-place finish to qualify. He pinned his first opponent and won a 7-5 decision over Goddard to reach the semifinals Friday evening. Top-ranked Luke Potter of Andover was able to defeat Hoffman 7-4 on his way to the title. Hoffman pinned his final two opponents, including fourth-ranked Julian Glover of Salina Central in the consolation finals. Hoffman takes a 32-8 record to Park City.Third-ranked Cooper Liles battled through a tough 150-pound bracket for third place. The senior pinned his first two opponents before getting pinned by second-ranked Brady Duling of Bishop Carroll in the semifinals. Liles needed a total of 78 seconds to pin his final two opponents, including fifth-ranked Abram Owings of Salina Central in the consolation finals. Liles heads to state with a 26-3 record.Fourth-ranked sophomore Trenton Kern had to contend with some top competition for third place at 190 pounds. After a bye, Kern lost an 8-7 to fifth-ranked Steel Shomacher in the quarters. Top-ranked Omari Elias of Kapaun awaited the winner. Kern dominated his way through the back side with a tech fall, a quick pin, and a forfeit against third-ranked Tate Hutchinson of Andover on the consolation semis. Kern avenged the earlier loss by pinning Schomaker for third place. He takes a 30-6 record to Hartman Arena.Sixth-ranked Aiden Davidson also navigated his way through a tough bracket for third at 165 pounds. The junior opened with a 6-0 decision before getting pinned by Andover. Davidson advanced to the consolation finals with a pin and two decisions on the back side. He won a 6-1 decision over fifth-ranked Johnny Rigler for third place. Davidson heads to state with a 23-6 record.Hayden Kelly finished third at 138 pounds to punch his ticket to Hartman Arena. The sophomore opened with a 5-4 decision against Hutchinson before getting tech-falled by second-ranked and eventual champion Adam Maki of Andover in round two. Kelly won four-straight decisions on the back side to capture third, including a 2-1 thriller against sixth-ranked Nate Barron of Newton in the consolation finals. Kelly takes a 26-11 record to state.Fifth-ranked Triston Tomlinson finished fourth to qualify for state at 120 pounds. After a bye, he was pinned by fourth-ranked Conner Landers of Bishop Carroll. Tomlinson pinned his next two opponents in short order to secure a spot at state. He advanced to the consolation finals with a forfeit win, then lost a 6-5 sudden-victory match to Ark City junior Carlos Leyva. Tomlinson takes a 23-16 record to state.Senior Matthew Johnson dropped out of the rankings at 215 pounds heading into regionals but qualified for state with a fifth-place finish Saturday. He pinned his first two opponents to reach the semifinals opposite second-ranked Dai'Mont Mucker of Valley Center. Mucker won 9-3 and pinned his opponent in the finals. With a spot at state secured, Johnson lost a 7-6 decision to fourth-ranked Marcel Gonzalez of Newton. Johnson pinned his Eisenhower opponent for fifth to improve his record to 28-12.Junior Michael Montoya placed seventh at 165 pounds to earn a spot at state. He pinned his first opponent before being tech-falled by fifth-ranked Tristen Ring of Andover in round two. Montoya won a 4-2 decision against Kapaun to secure a spot at state, lost a decision to Bishop Carroll, then defeated his Ark City opponent 5-0 in the seventh-place match. Montoya heads to Park City with a 24-16 record.Freshman Hayden Liles grabbed the eighth-place and final qualifying spot at 126 pounds. He pinned his first opponent only to get pinned by second-ranked Jase Adams of Salina Central. Liles pinned his next opponent to secure a spot at state. He lost his final two matches to drop to eighth with a 22-15 overall record.Brody Schoebelen came up a win shy of state at 285 pounds. He was upset in round one by the eventual sixth-place finisher from Salina Central. Schnoebelen stayed alive with a pin against Topeka West but bowed out a round early with a loss to Salina South.Alexis Reyes lost both of his matches at 106 pounds in a bracket that included two of the top-three wrestlers. Ambrose Kramer went 0-2 in a 113-pound bracket that featured four ranked wrestlers.This year's Class 5A and 6A boys' and girls' state wrestling championships will be held at Park City's Hartman Arena Feb. 22-24.
