Now 23, Shelton is in the same position Alexander Zverev once was, playing for his first major championship in the U.S. Open final. When Zverev lost that night — after he was so painfully close to winning — it took six more years before he finally broke through. American tennis fans don’t want to wait any longer. Shelton can end his country’s drought and win the first Grand Slam title by an American man since Andy Roddick in 2003 if he beats the top-seeded Zverev on Sunday.
DEN BOSCH, Netherlands (AP) — The Solheim Cup is back in the hands of the Europeans. Lottie Woad had the honor of guaranteeing Team Europe would reach the 14 1/2 points needed to beat the United States. Woad’s 2-and-1 victory over Auston Kim left the official score at 14-10 but Carlota Ciganda was assured of at least a half-point from her next-to-last match against Jennifer Kupcho. That was one of four matches still out on the course and the winning point was officially clinched by Ciganda about 10 minutes later. Ciganda also won the point that retained the Solheim Cup for Europe in 2023.

BERLIN (AP) — The U.S. and France will meet for the women's FIBA World Cup title Sunday in a rematch of the 2024 Paris Olympic final that the Americans won by a point. Both teams are downplaying the significance of that contest with so many new players in the World Cup. The U.S. has won 35 consecutive World Cup games and four straight titles. They have looked far from dominant in this tournament winning a pool game by three points and topping Spain in the semifinals by 10 — the closest a team has come to the Americans in a semifinal game during this run.
MADRID (AP) — Kimi Antonelli has taken advantage of Lando Norris' mishaps to win the Spanish Grand Prix in Formula 1’s return to Madrid, increasing his lead in the drivers’ standings. It was the second consecutive victory for Antonelli, the young Mercedes driver who had come-from-behind to win his home race at the Italian GP last weekend. Antonelli was second early on at the new Madring track in the Spanish capital, but pole-sitter Norris relinquished his lead after he wasn’t able to pit when a virtual safety car was deployed. He pitted on the next lap in a questionable strategy call by McLaren that dropped him several positions.

DETROIT (AP) — Justin Verlander is making progress toward potentially pitching one more time in the last year of his playing career. Detroit Tigers manager A.J. Hinch says the three-time Cy Young Award winner threw as hard as he has in more than a month off the mound on Saturday. Hinch shared the update on Sunday before Detroit wrapped up a series against Colorado. The Tigers have planned a two-day celebration of Verlander’s career when they host the Pittsburgh Pirates in two weeks during the last series of the regular season and they hope he can pitch. The two-time World Series champion and 2011 AL MVP shared his plans to retire in July after 21 seasons in the majors.
MIAMI (AP) — Lionel Messi scored his MLS-leading 19th goal of the season as Inter Miami played first-place Nashville to a 2-2 tie on Saturday night. Messi appeared to have Miami on its way to its first win over Nashville this season when he scored with a left-footed shot to make it 2-1 in the 62nd. Nashville’s Sam Surridge equalized with his second goal of the night just a minute into stoppage time to keep his club unbeaten in four meetings with Miami this season. The draw also kept Nashville nine points ahead of second-place Miami in the Eastern Conference standings.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — After taking 10 years to win his first world championship, Ryan Garcia needed only 4:25 to finish off Conor Benn on Saturday night in the first defense of his WBC welterweight title. Garcia’s sharp right hand to the jaw put Benn on the canvas early in the second round. Moments later, with the Englishman on the ropes, Garcia (26-2, 21 KOs) served a flurry of punches that prompted referee Thomas Taylor to step in and end the contest at the 1:25 mark and send the announced sold-out crowd of 18,855 into a frenzy. Garcia closed -300 at BetMGM, meaning bettors would have had to lay $300 to win $100.
