Maddox played for the Panther football team in the fall where he earned 2nd&nbsp;team All-Conference Honors as a wide receiver. In the winter, Maddox would earn 2nd&nbsp;Team All-Conference on the basketball court as well as be selected as an All-State Honorable Mention from the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association. Spray has signed to continue his basketball career at Barton Community College.&nbsp; &nbsp;

The agonizing week of playing the waiting game came to rest Tuesday afternoon as the Barton Community College women's golf team received news from the NJCAA of receiving an at-large bid for the 2024 Division I Championships.

Placing third behind 7th ranked Dodge City Community College and 9th ranked Iowa Western Community College last week at the Region VI/Plains District Championship, Barton's fate was left up to a national committee.

Moving up four spots in the latest national poll, the now 10th ranked Cougars were chosen as a recipient of the five at-large bids based on district finish and rankings to join ten other teams and fifteen individual entries May 19-24 in Melbourne, Florida, at the Duran Golf Club.

Continuing their streak and now making their 13th team national tournament appearance, prior to the announcement Barton's lone representative was&nbsp;Butpapaporn Sukterm&nbsp;as the freshman placed District runner-up of the 57-competitor field and placed first of the Region VI competitors to earn the 2024 Champion title.

Final KABC High School Baseball Rankings (5/9/24)

The 4th ranked Barton Community College women's track and field team got off to a great start to the 2024 Region VI Championships winning the first of seven events to capture both the KJCCC and Region title Saturday at Pratt's Track Complex.

Overall Barton had 25 scoring performances across the three-day event powered by 17 personal and/or season bests while adding four new national qualifying performances.

Of the scoring, Barton's small but mighty squad racked up 21 of their results within the top four placings finishing with 168 total points for an eight point gap ahead of 5th ranked Cloud County and 79.5 points more than third place Hutchinson.

Producing the program's second straight and 33rd Region outdoor title, conference scoring also put the Cougars on top for their first KJCCC West Division crown since 2019 and 32nd overall.

The momentum now shifts to the season's final event held May 16-18 in West Monroe, Louisiana, as the Cougars look to add to its indoor national title at the NJCAA's Outdoor Championships.

Ana Couto provided the initial spark winning the heptathlon by over 1200 points than the nearest competitor. Posting the program's seventh most accumulated points last year as a freshman, Couto's continued comeback from an earlier minor injury produced 4982 accumulated points for what would be the 9th most in program history. The sophomore won four of the seven events while finishing second in the others behind a trio of personal or season best efforts including a national qualifying performance in the 100m hurdles.

As Couto wrapped up her title on day two, the Cougars later in the day began their 54 point assault in the field events by winning all three amongst seven scoring performances in the top four.

The Championship's Women's Field Athlete of the Meet Jazmine Williamson piled up 26 points across three events, winning Friday's long jump on a personal best 6.50m (21-04.50) for a program 2nd best ever mark. On Saturday the sophomore finished runner-up in her other two events, posting another personal best in the triple jump (11.96m, 39-03.00) before winding up in the high jump at 1.68m (5-06.00).

Joining Williamson as a post-event award winner, Treneese Hamilton earned sixteen of her Championship leading 29 points on Friday by winning the javelin with a personal best 45.18m (148-02) throw on the way to earning the High Point Female Athlete of the Meet. Hamilton followed with a third place in discus (41.07m, 134-09) then on Saturday won the shot put (14.41m, 47-03.50) before concluding with an eighth place in the hammer throw (42.65m, 139-11).

Joining Williamson and Hamilton with post-event honors was Emmanuel Dixon in not only being named the women's but additionally the men's Assistant Coach of the Year.

Two of Barton's region title winners came on the track with both occurring in the hurdles. Kialia Claiborne circled the oval in the 400m hurdles clocking a winning 1:03.64 time, Kay-Lagay Clarke set a personal best in the 100m hurdles at 13.84, with Widlife Vermilus giving the Cougars an additional three points on a 15.20 sixth place clocking after recording a personal best 15.13 time a day before in the prelims.

Barton women capture second straight Region VI Outdoor title

The Barton Community College's bid for a second straight outdoor reginal title fell four points short on Saturday at Pratt's Track Complex as the 7th ranked Cougars finished runner-up at the 2024 KJCCC/Region VI Outdoor Championships.

Barton posted 21 scoring performances in their two-days of competition with 11 personal and/or season bests while adding a trio of new national qualifying performances.

Winning four individual titles, the Cougars finished runner-up in five other events. Missing a few points here and there including a walk-off during a race, Barton was left with 127 total points falling behind 8th ranked Cloud County's victorious 131 points but nearly twenty points ahead of third place Hutchinson.

Focus now turns to the season's final event held May 16-18 in West Monroe, Louisiana, as the Cougars compete at the NJCAA's Outdoor Championships.

A trio of Cougars earned post-event honors led by Emmanuel Dixon in not only being named the men's but additionally the women's Assistant Coach of the Year.

Ricardo Hayles' first event made a strong statement towards being named the Men's Field Athlete of the Meet by winning the discus on a 60.83m (199-07) throw. The mark bolted the freshman up four spots on the program all-time chart to second furthest and No. 7 on the NJCAA all-time performance list.

Earning the men's High Point Athlete of the Meet, Christopher Young won the initial throwing event of the javelin with a 58.59m (192-02) then finished runner-up behind Hayles by three feet at 59.93m (196-07) to remain in the third spot of the program best chart. On Saturday Young would again earn a runner-up finish in the shot put (17.68m, 58-00.25) with Hayles coming fourth at (16.49m, 54-01.25). Young concluded his Championship leading 36 points by winning the hammer throw (55.32m, 181-06) as freshman Boris Peranovic marked a personal best 50.46m (165-06) to punch his event ticket at nationals.

Just like on the women's side, the Cougars' Jeramiah Martin gave Barton a short track hurdle sweep by winning the men's 110m variety with a 13.96 clocking. Bryce Southerland also recorded a personal best 14.16 in prelims of the event clocking a slightly slower 14.22 for 4th place.

One of Barton's five runner-up finishes was earned by the 4x800m relay team in its first competition of the season. The tandem of Hamza Belkhalfi, Corlando Chambers, Jasiah Clapp, and Adrian Nethersole passed the baton to a 7:43.80 clocking for the 9th fastest time in program history punching their national meet entry in the process.

Missing a few points here and there including a walk-off during a race, Barton was left with 127 total points falling behind 8th ranked Cloud County's victorious 131 points but nearly twenty points ahead of third place Hutchinson.Focus now turns to the season's final event held May 16-18 in West Monroe, Louisiana, as the Cougars compete at the NJCAA's Outdoor Championships.A trio of Cougars earned post-event honors led by Emmanuel Dixon in not only being named the men's but additionally the women's Assistant Coach of the Year.Ricardo Hayles' first event made a strong statement towards being named the Men's Field Athlete of the Meet by winning the discus on a 60.83m (199-07) throw. The mark bolted the freshman up four spots on the program all-time chart to second furthest and No. 7 on the NJCAA all-time performance list.Earning the men's High Point Athlete of the Meet, Christopher Young won the initial throwing event of the javelin with a 58.59m (192-02) then finished runner-up behind Hayles by three feet at 59.93m (196-07) to remain in the third spot of the program best chart. On Saturday Young would again earn a runner-up finish in the shot put (17.68m, 58-00.25) with Hayles coming fourth at (16.49m, 54-01.25). Young concluded his Championship leading 36 points by winning the hammer throw (55.32m, 181-06) as freshman Boris Peranovic marked a personal best 50.46m (165-06) to punch his event ticket at nationals.Just like on the women's side, the Cougars' Jeramiah Martin gave Barton a short track hurdle sweep by winning the men's 110m variety with a 13.96 clocking. pitchers struggled out of the gate Wednesday but settled down and

The teams will instead play at 5:15 p.m. on Aug. 5 in St. Louis. The

York won the series’ first two games 4-3 and 7-5. It’s the team’s
first series win since April 19-21 at the Dodgers. The Mets were

points in the second half, leading the New York Knicks to a 130-121

emergence from the locker room before Game 7 of the 1970 NBA Finals
to lead the Knicks to their first title, Brunson sent the Madison

shot at the right circle and slipped a wrist shot between goalie
Stuart Skinner’s legs from a sharp angle for Vancouver’s second

NCAA, college conferences and member schools with federal protection

provide legal safe harbor for the entities that run college sports,
which has been under siege from antitrust lawsuits. Fry and Moore are
members of the House Judiciary Committee. The NCAA and power
conferences are considering a settlement in an antitrust case that

Colleges and universities are having a difficult time hiring,
recruiting and retaining members of their athletic training staffs
because of a number of below-market conditions, a survey shows. The
survey, by the National Athletics Trainers’ Association and the
American College of Sports Medicine, of 1,120 athletic trainers at
all collegiate levels identified four areas of most common concern:
compensation, organizational culture, burnout and increased work
responsibility, according to a joint statement. Among the findings,
more than 50% of athletic trainers were caring for more than 100
student-athletes and 65% had been given additional responsibilities
without a pay increase.

out the best way to manage the name, image and likeness landscape
when it comes to athletes earning endorsement money. Michigan is the
18th school to hire a NIL general manager in a partnership with
Altius Sports Partners. It will give the company more than $250,000 a
year Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel says it’s the right
time to bring in a company that has had three years to develop
strategies and NIL connections.

The former interpreter for Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani has
agreed to plead guilty to bank and tax fraud in a sports betting
case. Prosecutors alleged Ippei Mizuhara stole nearly $17 million
from the Japanese baseball player to pay off debts. Mizuhara’s
scheduled arraignment Thursday in federal court in Los Angeles was
postponed earlier Tuesday. The scandal shocked baseball fans from the
U.S. to Japan when the news broke in March. Mizuhara was initially
charged with one count of bank fraud. Authorities say there was no
evidence that Ohtani was involved in or aware of Mizuhara’s
gambling, and the player is cooperating with investigators.

CLIFTON, N.J. (AP) —
Nelly Korda will try to become the first woman to win six consecutive
LPGA Tour starts when play begins in the 72-hole Cognizant Founders
Cup on Thursday at the Upper Montclair Country Club in Clifton, New

weeks off following a three-stroke win in The Chevron Championship in
Texas. Korda's streak ties her with Hall of Famers Annika Sorenstam

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Bobby Witt Jr. hit a home run and scored three times to lead the Kansas City Royals over the Milwaukee Brewers 6-4 on Wednesday.

Both starting pitchers struggled out of the gate but settled down and limited the damage. The Royals' Brady Singer (3-1) allowed one run on five hits in 5 1/3 innings. He walked two and struck out four. Joe Ross (1-4) allowed three runs on three hits in five-plus innings, walking two and striking out two.

“I think the sinker had a lot of action on it,” Singer said. “I was able to locate that pretty well, get it in on the lefthanders. I wanted to go deeper in the game, but the first two innings the pitch count was pretty high.”

James McArthur picked up his eighth save after blowing his last two chances.

“We thought we had a chance to not have to bring him in, but clearly we needed to,” Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro said. “He came in and executed right off the bat. He only had to throw three pitches.”

The Brewers opened the first with back-to-back doubles by Brice Turang and William Contreras to grab a 1-0 lead.

The Royals answered with back-to-back doubles by Maikel Garcia and Witt, but didn't score until Vinnie Pasquantino's sacrifice fly. Witt's double looked like a flyout to center, keeping Garcia at second. But Blake Perkins slipped in center and the ball dropped untouched. Michael Massey's sacrifice fly scored Witt to give KC a 2-1 lead.

Brewers manager Pat Murphy wasn't lamenting the mistakes after the game.

“They're all winnable,” he said. “You make mistakes and then it piles on. Give them credit, they capitalized when they had to. But we had a couple of things happen to us early. But there were a lot of good things today, too. Gary Sanchez continues to have great at-bats. Joe Ross pitched good.”

After both starters settled down, Massey got his second sacrifice fly in the sixth, scoring Witt. The sacrifice fly isn't as glamorous as an RBI hit, but the runs help.

“It's knowing the situation and getting a pitch you can do something with,” Quatraro said. “You have to understand that you don't have to do too much. Both Vinnie and Massey had big at-bats.”

Sanchez connected for his fifth home run leading off the seventh for Milwaukee. With one out and a runner at second, Turang lined one to left, but Oliver Dunn was thrown out at the plate by left fielder MJ Melendez.

“I'm just trying to find a way to help this team win,” said Melendez, who entered the game hitting .185 and struck out in his two at-bats. “Obviously I'm not getting the job done on offense. I'm trying to make up for it on the other side of the ball.”

His contributions have not gone unnoticed by his teammates.

“I think he's got one of the best arms out there,” Witt said. “His accuracy is unbelievable. It's great to see him out there doing his thing.”

Witt hit his first home run since April 11 leading off the eighth.

“That was a slider,” Witt said. “Those are the pitches you're supposed to hit out when they back up like that.”

Adam Frazier and Freddy Fermin added RBI singles. The Brewers got two runs in the ninth.

Christian Yelich went 0 for 5 for the Brewers in his&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/brewers-yelich-4d7a6765cdff6915ba9cae4c05c7d523">first game back</a>&nbsp;from a low back strain.

Royals: RHP Alec Marsh is eligible to come off the IL on Friday. Manager Matt Quatraro said Marsh is on schedule to start for the Royals in Anaheim.

Brewers: return to Milwaukee to start a four-game series with the Cardinals. Milwaukee will hand the ball to RHP Tobias Myers (0-2, 6.23 ERA). The Cardinals have not announced their starter.

Royals: will begin a four-game series in Anaheim on Thursday. RHP Michael Wacha (1-4, 5.50 ERA) will start for KC against LHP Reid Detmers (3-3, 4.24 ERA).

Bobby Witt Jr. powers Royals past Brewers 6-4

The Lady Panther softball team closed out the regular season at home Tuesday with a pair of wins against TMP. Great Bend ends the regular season with a record of 20-6 and currently sits as the No. 3 seed in the 5A west regional bracket. The top four teams in the regional will host playoff action. Topeka Seaman (19-6) and Valley Center (17-6) have games scheduled on Thursday.

Great Bend took game one against the Monarchs 12-2. TMP opened with a run in the first inning but the Lady Panthers answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame, then piled on four more runs in the second. Great Bend scored in all six at bats to set up the run-rule win after six innings.

The win was bookended by home runs from Paige Thexton and Alyssa McCauley. Thexton's lead-off homer in the first inning tied the game, and Camdyn Post singled and scored in the opening inning. With the game all but decided in the sixth, McCauley's home run pushed the Panther lead to 10 runs to invoke the run-rule.

Six of the 13 Lady Panther hits went for extra bases in the win. DeShawnna Bryant finished with four hits, including a double, to drive in three runs and score three times. McCauley added a single on the day. Thexton walked in her final three at bats, scoring three runs in the game. Denver Ringo singled, tripled, and walked twice. Kamryn Koelsch doubled and drove in two, and Kya Behr doubled with an RBI and run scored. Halle Post singled and drove in two.

Braelyn Turner pitched all six innings for the win. The sophomore struck out six and allowed two earned runs on five hits.

The Lady Panthers took game two 10-0. Great Bend scored in the first and third innings to lead 2-0 before scratching across four runs in the fourth. Behr paced the offense with three hits, including a pair of doubles, driving in a run and scoring twice. Bryant singled and drove in three runs. Halle Post singled twice, and Chayla Prendergast knocked in the final two runs of the game on a double to push the Panther lead to 10 and end the game early.

The freshman Prendergast was also effective in the circle with five strikeouts and just two hits allowed.

Lady Panther softball closes out regular season with sweep

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Willy Adames had been chatting up the Royals fans behind the Milwaukee dugout all game, the good-natured ribbing carrying on as the Brewers jumped out to a two-run lead and Kansas City battled back to take its own two-run lead to the ninth.

With two outs and a pair of runners aboard, Adames found himself standing in the on-deck circle with the game on the line.

“They told me they wanted me to hit a three-run homer,” Adames would say later, “and I was like, ‘I got you.’”

Adames proceeded to drill an 83 mph curveball from Royals closer James McArthur into the left-field bullpen, sending Milwaukee to a 6-5 win Tuesday night, and leaving those Kansas City fans mock-worshipping him as he returned to the dugout.

“It was really priceless,” said Brewers manager Pat Murphy, who had watched the called-shot scene unfold. “It was really cool.”

Jared Koenig (3-1) earned the win for Milwaukee, getting Hunter Renfroe to ground out to end the seventh and then surviving a scoreless eighth. Trevor Megill breezed through the ninth to earn his third save in three tries.

Vinnie Pasquantino drove in three runs for Kansas City. Salvador Perez and Kyle Isbel also drove in runs.

“That one stings,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro admitted, “but we've done that to other people as well.”

Rhys Hoskins and Joey Ortiz crushed back-to-back homers off Royals starter Seth Lugo in the second inning, but that was all the offense the Brewers could muster until the seventh, when they managed to coax another run across.

They squandered a chance to draw closer when Angel Zerpa struck out Gary Sanchez to strand a pair later in the seventh, then missed another opportunity in the eighth, when John Schreiber fanned Oliver Dunn to leave two more runners aboard.

The Brewers didn't waste their final opportunity in the ninth.

McArthur (1-2) had retired the first two batters when William Contreras, on a full-count pitch, began the comeback with a double just inside the left-field foul line. Sanchez followed with a walk before Adames walked confidently to the plate.

“He's carrying on with (the fans) during Gary's at-bat, and he's telling them — they're Kansas City fans — he's telling them, ‘One more ball,'” Murphy said. “Then he goes back to them and goes, ‘Here we go.’”

There it went, right into the left-field bullpen.

It wasn't exactly on par Babe Ruth's called shot — there's a big difference between a regular-season game the first week of May and Game 3 of the 1932 World Series, when the Hall of Famer famously pointed toward deep center field at Wrigley Field, then homered to that exact spot to help the Yankees beat the Cubs, 7-5.

Still, it was the kind of stuff certain to go down in Brewers lore.

“Oh my God, that was the coolest thing I ever done,” said Adames, who even signed some balls for those Kansas City fans. “You know, sometimes the fans will be very hard, but these guys here, they were amazing. They were having a good time. Like, all my at-bats, we were chatting, and then the last one was obviously the most fun.”

Brewers left-hander Wade Miley was scheduled to undergo Tommy John surgery Tuesday in Cincinnati. The procedure was being performed by Dr. Timothy Kremchek, the Reds' medical director. The 37-year-old Miley made two starts this season, working seven total innings, before he was put on the injured list April 22 with elbow inflammation. The Brewers were counting on him after Miley went 9-4 with a 3.14 ERA in 23 starts last season.

RHP Joe Ross (1-3, 4.65 ERA) pitches the series finale Wednesday afternoon for the Brewers. RHP Brady Singer (2-1, 2.45) is due to make the 100th start of his career for Kansas City.

Brandon Nimmo hit a three-run homer to spark a six-run fifth inning,
and the New York Mets rallied to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-5.
The Cardinals not only dropped their fourth straight game, but also
lost catcher Willson Contreras to a broken left forearm in the second
inning after he was hit by J.D. Martinez’s swing. Contreras, a
three-time All-Star, is hitting .280 with a team-leading six home
runs. José Buttó allowed three runs in five innings as the Mets won
their second consecutive game. All three runs he permitted came in
the first, but Buttó retired nine of his last 10 batters.

ST. LOUIS (AP) —
Cardinals catcher Willson Contreras broke his left forearm when he
was hit by a swing during their game against the New York Mets.
Contreras got hurt with J.D. Martinez at the plate in the second
inning. After he was clipped by Martinez’s swing, the three-time
All-Star tumbled over in obvious pain and then jogged away before
sitting down while was examined by St. Louis training staff. Martinez
was awarded first base due to catcher’s interference. The team said
Contreras had a left forearm fracture, and Iván Herrera took over
behind the plate.

DALLAS (AP) — A
newspaper report says Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice is
suspected of assault in Dallas a little over a month after he was one
of the speeding drivers in a chain-reaction crash that led to
multiple charges. Law enforcement officials told The Dallas Morning
News that Rice was suspected of assaulting a person who went to a
hospital after an incident at a downtown nightclub early Monday
morning. Rice faces multiple charges in the high-speed crash in
Dallas. Rice's attorney has acknowledged the receiver was one of the
speeding drivers.

UNDATED (AP) —
Colorado coach Tad Boyle is adding basketball great Danny Manning to
his coaching staff in a reunion of the former Kansas teammates. Boyle
and Manning spent a season together with the Jayhawks in 1984-85.
Manning would later go on to lead Kansas to the 1988 NCAA
championship, an improbable run that earned the team the nickname
“Danny and the Miracles.” The addition of Manning comes as the
Buffaloes prepare to rejoin the Big 12 Conference. Manning and Boyle
will now routinely face their alma mater.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) —
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 29 points to help the top-seeded
Oklahoma City Thunder defeat the Dallas Mavericks 117-95 in Game 1 of
their Western Conference semifinal series. Chet Holmgren added 19
points, seven rebounds and three blocks for the Thunder. Jalen
Williams struggled with his shot for three quarters but scored 10 of
his 18 points in the fourth to help Oklahoma City remain unbeaten in
the playoffs. Dallas star Luka Doncic scored 19 points on 6-for-19
shooting and had five turnovers. Kyrie Irving scored 20 points and
Daniel Gafford added 16 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks for the
Mavericks.

BOSTON (AP) —
Jaylen Brown scored 32 points and the Boston Celtics powered past the
Cleveland Cavaliers 120-95 in Game 1 of their second-round playoff
series. Derrick White added 25 points, including 7 3-pointers to help
the Celtics pull away in the second half. Jayson Tatum finished with
18 points and 11 rebounds. The Cavaliers went 11 of 42 from 3 and
kept pace early. But the Celtics were even more efficient from the
outside, connecting on 18 of 46 from beyond the arc for the game. It
helped Boston carry a 15-point lead into the fourth quarter. Donovan
Mitchell had 33 points for Cleveland, becoming the fourth player in
league history with 30 or more points in six straight playoff series

DALLAS (AP) —
Miles Wood scored on a backhander 11:03 into overtime into overtime
and the Colorado Avalanche, after trailing by three goals in the
first period, beat the top-seeded Dallas Stars 4-3 in the opener of
their second-round Western Conference series. Wood got the puck past
Jake Oettinger to wrap up only the Avalanche’s third three-goal
comeback to win a playoff game in their history. Cale Makar had a
goal and two assists for Colorado, while Valerie Nichushkin had a
goal and an assist. Nathan MacKinnon had the tying goal only 39
seconds into the third period Alexander Georgiev had 19 saves while
winning his fifth consecutive game in goal for the Avalanche. Game 2
is Thursday night.

NEW YORK (AP) —
Vincent Trocheck scored a power-play goal off a rebound at 7:24 of
the second overtime to give the New York Rangers a 4-3 win over the
Carolina Hurricanes. Alexis Lafreniere scored twice, Chris Kreider
had a power-play goal and Artemi Panarin had two assists for the
Rangers. Igor Shesterkin stopped a season-high 54 shots. The Rangers
remained perfect in six playoff games. Jake Guentzel scored twice,
Dmitry Orlov also scored and Sebastian Aho had three assists for the
Hurricanes. Frederik Andersen finished with 35 saves. The Hurricanes
have lost three of their last four.

All-Star tumbled over in obvious pain and then jogged away before
sitting down while was examined by St. Louis training staff. Martinez
was awarded first base due to catcher’s interference. The team said
Contreras had a left forearm fracture, and Iván Herrera took over

newspaper report says Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice is
suspected of assault in Dallas a little over a month after he was one
of the speeding drivers in a chain-reaction crash that led to
multiple charges. Law enforcement officials told The Dallas Morning
News that Rice was suspected of assaulting a person who went to a
hospital after an incident at a downtown nightclub early Monday
morning. Rice faces multiple charges in the high-speed crash in
Dallas. Rice's attorney has acknowledged the receiver was one of the

Colorado coach Tad Boyle is adding basketball great Danny Manning to his coaching staff in a reunion of former Kansas teammates.

Boyle and Manning spent a season together with the Jayhawks in 1984-85. Manning would later go on to lead Kansas to the 1988 NCAA championship, an improbable run that earned the team the nickname “Danny and the Miracles."

The addition of Manning comes as the Buffaloes prepare to rejoin the Big 12 Conference. Manning and Boyle will now routinely face their alma mater.

Manning, who turns 58 on May 17, begins his time in Boulder on June 1. He will work with a team that's coming off a 26-win season and an NCAA Tournament appearance. The Buffaloes saw several players enter the NBA draft, including freshman Cody Williams, who could be a lottery pick.

Manning spent the past two seasons as associate head coach at Louisville. He's also served as the head coach at Tulsa and Wake Forest. In addition, he was the interim head coach at Maryland in 2021-22.

“I’m very excited to join coach Boyle’s staff,” Manning said in a statement Tuesday. “This staff has been together for quite some time and has had quite a bit of success, so I want to come in and be a sponge."

While at Kansas, Manning became the program's all-time leader in points (2,951) and rebounds (1,187). He was inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in 2008.

As a senior in 1984-85, Boyle shared the court with Manning, who was a freshman at the time. They crossed paths again as assistant coaches for USA Basketball's under-19 World Cup team in 2017.

“I’m excited to add him to the staff,” Boyle said. "He’s not only a great coach, but he’s a great human being and he’s going to do nothing but help Colorado basketball.”

Manning was the top pick by the Los Angeles Clippers in 1988. He spent 15 seasons in the NBA with seven different teams. He was the sixth man of the year with Phoenix in 1998.

He broke into the coaching ranks under Kansas coach Bill Self, starting as the director of student-athlete development/team manager in 2003 and rising to an assistant coach role in 2007. He was part of the staff when the Jayhawks won the 2008 national title.

Manning went 38-29 in two seasons at Tulsa, where he was named Conference USA's coach of the year in 2013-14. At Wake Forest, he went 78-111 over six seasons and then 10-14 as the interim coach at Maryland after Mark Turgeon stepped down.

A settlement being discussed in an antitrust lawsuit against the NCAA and major college conferences could cost billions and pave the way for a compensation model for college athletes.

An agreement has not been finalized and many questions remain unanswered. It is also unclear if new rules could withstand further legal scrutiny, but it appears college sports is heading down a revolutionary path with at least some schools directly paying athletes to participate. Here's what is known and what still needs to be figured out:

House vs. NCAA is a class-action federal lawsuit seeking damages for athletes who were denied the opportunity, going back to 2016, to earn money from use of their name, image or likeness — often referred to by the acronym NIL. The plaintiffs, including former Arizona State swimmer Grant House, are also asking the court to rule that NIL compensation should include billions of dollars in media rights fees that go to the NCAA and the wealthiest conferences (Big Ten, Big 12, Atlantic Coast and Southeastern), mostly for football and basketball.

The settlement being discussed could have the NCAA paying nearly $3 billion in damages over 10 years, with help from insurance and withholding of distributions that would have gone to the four big conferences. Last year, NCAA revenue approached $1.3 billion and the association projects a steady rise in coming years, thanks mostly to increases baked into the television contract with CBS and Warner Bros. Discovery for the men's basketball tournament. A new, eight-year deal with ESPN worth $920 million for the Division I women's basketball tournament and other championship events takes effect in 2025.

The potential settlement also calls for a $300 million commitment from each school in those four conferences over 10 years, including about $20 million per year directed toward paying athletes. Administrators have warned that could lead to program cuts for the so-called non-revenue sports familiar to fans who watch the Olympics.

“It’s the Olympic sports that would be in jeopardy,” Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne said during a March panel in Washington led by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas). “That’s men and women. If you look at the numbers for us at the University of Alabama, with our 19 sports outside of football and men’s basketball, we lost collectively almost $40 million."

Not entirely clear. Presumably, it would start with the athletes in sports that produce most of the revenue: football and men's basketball players at the biggest and wealthiest programs. Women's basketball is likely next in line, but it is possible athletes in all sports could see some benefit — but probably not at all schools.

What's being considered is allowing schools to pay athletes, but not requiring those payments. Schools that don't rake in millions in TV revenue wouldn't necessarily be on the hook. There are also unanswered questions about whether the federal gender equity law Title IX would require equal funding for male and female athletes.

Getting the presidential boards of four conferences and the NCAA board of governors to approve a settlement is not a given, not to mention the plaintiffs in the House case. Still, the possibility of having to pay $4 billion in damages — and the NCAA has been on the losing end of many recent court cases — has spurred interest in a deal before trial begins in January.

The case is being heard in the Northern District of California by U.S. Judge Claudia Wilken, who has already ruled against the NCAA other landmark antitrust lawsuits and ordered the sides in House to seek a settlement.

A new system for compensating college athletes would be needed to avoid similar challenges in the future; for example, anything that looks like a cap on compensation by, say, the four major conferences would be ripe for another lawsuit.The NCAA has been asking Congress for some kind of antitrust exemption for years, but the emphasis has shifted lately from regulating NIL compensation to keeping the athletes from being deemed employees.A ruling from an NLRB regional director paved the way for members of the Dartmouth men's basketball team to vote to join a union after being deemed employees, and many have advocated for collective bargaining as a solution to college sports' antitrust exposure.Jason Stahl, executive director of the College Football Players Association advocacy group, says lawmakers should create a special status for college athletes that would give them the right to organize and collectively bargain without actual employee status.Stahl said even though many college athletes are apprehensive about being employees and joining a union, they should have the right to decide that."My concern is there would be some type of one-two punch," Stahl said of a lawsuit settlement followed quickly by federal legislation to codify a revenue-sharing plan that precludes athletes from employee status and the right to organize. “A lot of things I'm hearing about this cap are not things I want to be hearing."WHAT'S NEXTThere are so many moving parts that it is hard to say with certainty, though settling House seems to a priority for late spring or summer. The earliest for any true changes noticed on campus would be fall of 2025.
