Region 6 Softball Tournament Scores/Schedule

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jonah Heim hit a tying solo home run in the ninth inning and Nathaniel Lowe had a go-ahead RBI single in the 10th, leading the Texas Rangers to a 3-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Sunday.

With one out in the 10th, Corey Seager singled off James McArthur (1-1) to put runners on first and third. Lowe followed with his third RBI of the series to score Leody Tavares.

David Robertson pitched a scoreless 10th that included an intentional walk to Bobby Witt Jr. with two outs to seal the win for the Rangers with his first save of the season.

Kirby Yates (3-0) earned the win by tossing two scoreless innings of relief.

It was the third straight series win for the Rangers overall and the sixth in a row against the Royals since 2021.

“The guys fought and we had some huge hits in the end with Heim and Lowe, but you have to look at the mound,” Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said. “(Jon) Gray had seven solid innings, Yates gave us a good ninth and Robertson came and shut it down. ...

"The pitching has been pretty consistent, giving us great starts, and the bullpen is doing a nice job. That is how to take series wins.”

Heim tied it at 2 in the ninth off McArthur when his shot struck the right-field foul pole for a home run. The homer snapped a season-high four-game drought for the Rangers.

“I didn’t want to chase low, so I just tried to see something up in the zone," Heim said. “Luckily, he threw me a slider that started up and I put a good swing on it, and it stayed fair.

"There is never any panic with our offense. Everyone is out there just putting together good at-bats, taking walks, hitting balls hard and good things will happen for us.”

Gray allowed two runs and seven hits with no walks and seven strikeouts in seven innings in the start for the Rangers.

Texas moved to 3-3 in rubber games this season, while Kansas City dropped to 1-5.

“It was a tough loss,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. "We had a 2-0 lead going into the eighth, but a lot will be made of the last couple of innings. We did not do much in the middle innings. Credit to Gray and Yates for keeping us right where we were.”

Kansas City's Daniel Lynch tossed five innings of shutout ball in his season debut with just two hits, two walks and six strikeouts. Lynch retired 10 straight after getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the first.

Vinnie Pasquantino gave the Royals an early 2-0 lead with a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the first and an RBI double in the third. But Kansas City went 1 for 10 with runners in scoring position.

Kansas City recalled Lynch for the start and optioned RHP Colin Selby to Triple-A Omaha to make room.

Rangers rookie OF Wyatt Langford left Saturday night with right hamstring tightness and was scheduled to have an MRI on Sunday. The team expected to know more by Monday.

Rangers: Texas will head to Oakland for a four-game series. Andrew Heaney (0-4, 5.10 ERA) will start against the A's.

Royals: Kansas City will host Milwaukee for three games starting Monday night, when Cole Ragans (2-2, 3.44 ERA) will take the mound.

(AP) — The NCAA and major college conferences are considering a
possible settlement of an antitrust lawsuit that could cost them
billions in damages and force schools to share athletics-related
revenue with their athletes. But even if college sports leaders
create a new, more professional model for collegiate athletics they
likely would need help from Congress if athletes are not classified
as employees. Two people familiar with settlement discussions related
to House vs. the NCAA told AP the association could pay out $2.9
billion in damages over 10 years to resolve the class-action case.

IRVING, Texas (AP) —
Former Oregon State and Nebraska coach Mike Riley has been named to
the College Football Playoff selection committee. Riley will replace
Pat Chun, who stepped down when he became athletic director at
Washington in March. Riley coached 48 years at the college and pro
levels. He was head coach at Oregon State (1997-98 and 2003-14) and
Nebraska (2015-17). He also has coached in five different pro
leagues, including in the NFL with the San Diego Chargers
(1999-2001). Most recently he was coach of the USFL’s New Jersey
Generals (2022-23).

CLEVELAND (AP) —
Donovan Mitchell scored 39 points, Caris LeVert added 15 and the
Cleveland Cavaliers avoided a potentially franchise-shifting loss by
rallying for a 106-94 win over the Orlando Magic in Game 7. The Cavs
will play Boston in the next round. Cleveland trailed by 18 in the
first half and was in danger of being knocked out in the first round
for the second year in a row. But Mitchell, who scored 50 in a Game 6
loss, put the Cavs on his back. Evan Mobley grabbed 16 rebounds as
Cleveland won its first playoff series without LeBron James since
1993. Paolo Banchero scored 38 and added 16 rebounds to lead the
Magic, who grew up in the series but couldn’t figure out how to win

Back when the New York Knicks would annually march on in the
playoffs, they’d almost always run into the Indiana Pacers. With
the teams set to renew their playoff rivalry Monday in the Eastern

Jalen Brunson and the Knicks are bracing for an opponent who plays a

Radek Faksa broke a tie in his return to the Dallas lineup,
20-year-old Wyatt Johnston scored in another Game 7 and the Stars

an undisclosed injury since leaving the bench late in Game 2, Faksa
scored 44 seconds into the third period with a backhander from the
circle to the left of goalie Adin Hill. Dallas goalie Jake Oettinger
made 21 saves. Brett Howden scored for Vegas. The Stars, the No. 1
seed in the West, move on to play well-rested Colorado in the second
round. Game 1 is Tuesday night in Dallas.

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) —
There are no shortage of storylines for this Florida-Boston rematch.
There’s the Panthers, trying to move another step closer toward a
return to the Stanley Cup Final. There’s the Bruins, looking to
avenge a shocking upset in a Round 1 series last season. The rested
Panthers having just gotten a few days off, the razor-sharp Bruins
rolling in after a Game 7 overtime win over Toronto. A second-round
series between the Panthers and Bruins starts Monday night in South
Florida, the two best teams in the Atlantic Division squaring off
with a trip to the NHL’s final four on the line.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP)
— The second jewel of horse racing’s Triple Crown could be absent
of 150th Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan and other contenders who
contributed to the thrilling three-wide photo finish. Mystik Dan
trainer Kenny McPeek and ownership were non-committal about sending
the colt to Baltimore for the Preakness on May 18 and instead might
opt for the relocated Belmont Stakes in June at Saratoga. The
Preakness still could feature quality, rested horses, including some
by Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert as he seeks a follow-up to
National Treasure's win last year.

McKINNEY, Texas (AP)
— Taylor Pendrith took advantage of Ben Kohles’ final-hole
meltdown to win the CJ Cup Byron Nelson on Sunday for his first PGA
Tour title. Kohles overtook Pendrith with birdies on Nos. 16 and 17
for a one-shot lead, then bogeyed the 18th after hitting his second
shot into greenside rough. After having to chip twice from the rough
and already looking stunned, Kohles missed a 6-foot putt that would
have forced a playoff. Pendrith two-putted for birdie on the 18th,
holing a 3-footer for a 4-under 67 and 23-under 261 total at the TPC
Craig Ranch. The 32-year-old Canadian won in his 74th career PGA Tour
start. Playing just north of his birthplace of Dallas, Kohles shot 66
to finish a stroke back. He’s winless on the tour.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla.
(AP) — Lando Norris needed 110 starts and a mistake by Max
Verstappen to earn his first ever Formula 1 race and end Verstappen’s
dominance at the Miami Grand Prix. Verstappen started from the pole
and was out front when he hit a chicane and knocked a cone out of
place on the circuit. It forced the three-time reigning F1 champion
to pit and gave Norris the lead. The 24-year-old driver for McLaren
then controlled the race to give the organization its first win since
a Daniel Ricciardo victory in 2021. It also made him the second
British driver in F1 history to be feted on the podium by “God Save
the King.”

place on the circuit. It forced the three-time reigning F1 champion
to pit and gave Norris the lead. The 24-year-old driver for McLaren
then controlled the race to give the organization its first win since

Monday Sports Headlines and Scores presented by Barton Community College

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Nathaniel Lowe had four hits and two RBIs, and the Texas Rangers beat the Kansas City Royals 15-4 on Saturday night.

Lowe went 4 for 6 one night after going hitless in four at bats in Texas' 7-1 loss. It was his first four-hit game since last July 14.

“I guess it was just my turn in the grand pendulum of the swing of baseball," Lowe said. “It was great to have so many guys contribute. We got smoked last night, so it was good to come back tonight.”

Adolis García, Evan Carter and Travis Jankowski also drove in two runs each. Carter scored on a wild pitch after a two-run triple in the third inning. Garcia extended his hitting streak to six games, and Carter had two hits to extend his hit streak to five games.

The Rangers totaled a season-high 17 hits and set a season-high in runs against the team entering the game with the highest run differential in the majors.

Texas had three three-run innings and a five-run ninth to hand Kansas City its worst loss of the season. Two-runs scored on a wild pitch by Colin Selby and a throwing error to third base on the same play to cap a three-run seventh. Joe Smith, Jankowski, Marcus Semien, Leody Taveras and Ezequiel Duran had RBIs in the ninth.

“It was good to see everyone do something to help in the cause," Texas manager Bruce Bochy said. ”We got shut down the night before the guys came out and put together great at-bats it is good for their confidence. ... Everyone did something tonight."

Dane Dunning pitched 4 2/3 innings, giving up two runs and four hits. Dunning had limited the Royals to just one hit through the first four innings.

Josh Sborz (1-0) pitched one inning of relief to get the win.

Michael Wacha (1-4) pitched a season-low 3 2/3 innings, allowing a season-high seven runs and nine hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

“Obviously looked like some missed locations tonight," Royals Manager Matt Quatraro said. "You have to tip your cap to them as well.”

Hunter Renfroe put the Royals on the board with a two-run single to left field with two outs in the fifth. Bobby Witt Jr. recorded his 11th stolen base of the season, which leads the American League.

Vinnie Pasquantino and Garrett Hampson each drove in a run, and Michael Massey had three hits to extend his hitting streak to seven games.

Rangers: Wyatt Langford exited the game in the fifth inning with right hamstring tightness. Langford was 0 for 3.

Royals: RHP Alec Marsh (right elbow contusion) is scheduled to make a rehab start with Triple-A Omaha on May 5. The Royals put Marsh on the 15-day injured list on April 25, making him eligible to return on May 10.

Jon Gray (1-1, 2.48 ERA) will start the series finale for Texas. Daniel Lynch IV (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will make his season debut for Kansas City.

High School track and field record fell just five days after the Lady Panthers
set a pair of records Monday in Topeka. Friday in Salina, freshman Cooper
Ohnmacht became just the second Kansas triple jumper to surpass 46 feet this
year in Kansas. His winning mark of 46-5-5 broke a 31-year-old GBHS record by
2.5 inches.

Manhattan put
together another dominating performance to win the invite with 150 points. Hays
scored 100 points for second, and Great Bend finished ninth with 37 points.

Ohnmacht reached
21-1.5 for third place in the long jump, less than five inches from the top-two
performers from Hutchinson and Hays. Sophomore Kellen Brown finished 15th
in the triple jump at 38-3, and junior Ben Nicholson placed 17th at
37-1.5. Brown placed 21st in the long jump at 17-5, and senior Ethan
Elsen made his varsity debut at 13-1.

Senior Ramiro
Rocho, ranked in the 5A top-20 in the 400m dash, just missed his best time in
that event to place third in 51.75, half a second behind the silver. The event
also featured one of 4A’s top sprinters.

Sophomore Ismael
Ramirez posted his best time of the season in the 800m run for third in
2:03.14, just 0.05s behind the silver. Senior Braylon Moore ran fifth in 2:03.61,
also a best time of the season.

Ramirez finished
fifth in the 1600m run in 4:38.93, nearly two seconds behind the bronze. Senior
Tavon Stroup placed eighth in 4:47.14. Junior Luis Gonzalez finished 12th
in the 300m hurdles in 46.65, followed by sophomores Victor Reyes and Oscar
Caning in 16th and 17, respectively, in 51.02 and 52.17.

The Panther 4x8
team of Moore, Rocho, Diego Pasos, and Alex Galindo placed sixth in a tough
field in 8:37.86, the 15th-best time in 5A this year. The 4x4 team
of Rocho, Moore, Pasos, and Pedro Enriquez finished seventh in 3:35.11 to miss
the bronze by less than three seconds.

Freshman Dustin
Fugitt placed 14th in the high jump at 5-2. That event featured
Manhattan senior Vincent Malone, ranked No. five all-class, and Hays junior
Kamani Jones, who both cleared 6-6 to beat the field by eight inches.

Jorge Pena finished
16th in the discus at 119-11, followed by Conner Holliday in 20th
at 116-5. Pena placed 18th in the shot at 39-4.75, followed by Holliday
in 22nd at 36-8.5.

The result was 88 team points to tie with Hays in second place. Salina Central won
its home invite with 92 points.

Coming off a
school record in the javelin at 141-4 on Monday, senior Macy Nachtigal only
reached 125-7 Friday but still won the event by nearly seven feet. Sophomores
Kimberly Hofflinger and MacKenzie Lindberg finished 13th and 15th,
respectively, at 94-8 and 89-6.

The Lady Panther
4x800m relay was also coming off a school-record run Monday. Friday, the team
of Sienna Smith, Bella Long, Marissa Boone, and Kate Welcher ran nearly a
minute off that record time but still beat the field by five seconds in
10:32.51. The 4x4 team of Smith, Reese Bullard, Eliana Beckham, and Daizy Gomez
collected gold in 4:12.99, two seconds ahead of Junction City. Great Bend ranks
No. 2 in the 5A 4x8 and No. 7 in the 4x4.

Beckham and
Bullard also took the top-two spots in the open 800. Beckham cut a second off
her best time to win in 2:20.35, the No. 8 time in 5A. Bullard ran second in
2:25.26, and Smith placed fourth in 2:29.38 to miss the sweep by less than four
seconds.

Senior Addy
Nicholson cut 10 seconds off her 1600m time but her 5:21.75 was only good
enough for third in a tough field that included Salina Central freshman Kaylie
Schultz in 5:00.17, the fourth-fastest time in the state this spring. 

Things did not get
any easier in the 3200m run as North Carolina-bound Katelyn Rupe of Salina
Central took the gold by 96 seconds in 10:24.67. Rupe ran a 10:17 at the KU
Relays to rank No. 6 all-time in Kansas. Junior Marissa Boone finished third in
12:03.97 to miss the silver by three seconds. Freshman Teah King ran fifth in
12:27.91.

Senior Sadie Spray
finished third in the 300m hurdles in 48.80 to miss the silver by just 0.08s.
She made her return to the 100m hurdles for a sixth-place finish in 16.53 to
make the top-20 in 5A. Gomez placed eighth in the 400m run in 1:05.57, four
seconds behind the bronze. Long ran 15th in the 300s in 54.44.

The Lady Panther
high jumpers saw familiar competition. The event featured two of the three 5A
jumpers tied for the lead at 5-4. Hays junior Katie Linenberger won Friday at
5-3. Spray matched a season best of 5-2 to take the silver, and junior Cassie
Ellegood finished fourth at 5-0. Ellegood placed 15th in the long
jump at 13-10.5, followed by freshman Keira Leyva in 16th at 13-6.

Spray also made
her debut in the triple jump, placing eighth at 33-4 to miss the bronze by more
than two feet. Junior Kara Feist finished ninth at 32-10, and junior Jordyn
Harbaugh reached 31-11 for 11th.

Freshman Kayle
Baldwin set a season best in the pole vault at 9-0 for seventh. Sophomore
Kaylea McMullen placed 14th at 8-0. That event featured the top-two
vaulters in 5A, both from Salina.

Lindberg led the
Lady Panther discus throwers in 10th on a throw of 103-2. Hofflinger
followed in 11th at 99-10, and sophomore Allie Garhart placed 14th
at 95-9. Gerhart finished ninth in the shot put at 32-11.25. Hofflinger placed
19th at 29-4.

Lady Panther track team ties for second in Salina

Great Bend High School senior Carter Coombs announced his commitment to play basketball at Barton Community College next year.&nbsp; Coombs was a starter on the Panthers team that went to the Class 5A State Tournament this spring.&nbsp;

Prep sports action around the state turned into a race against the weather. Friday night in McPherson, the Panther baseball team was helped by some quick innings from Carson Umphres on the mound. Following a 6-3 loss to Salina South, Umphres threw five no-hit innings and strike out nine as Great Bend run-ruled Junction City as the storms arrived.

Umphres was perfect until walking a Bluejay batter with two outs in the fifth inning. He got help from the offense right away as the Panthers scratched across five runs in the first and six more in the third to lead 12-0.

Sophomore Ian Premer had another monster game at the plate with two doubles and a triple to drive in five runs and score three times. Umphres helped himself out with a double, a single, and a walk with a pair of RBIs and runs scored. Peyden Oelger singled and doubled, and Owen Kaiser doubled and walked. JJ Grove singled and walked twice, coming around to score twice.

Three late runs from Salina South in game one cost Great Bend the sweep. The Panthers led 2-1 after one and held that lead until the Cougars plated two runs in the fifth. Great Bend got a run in the sixth to tie things up before South decided the game in the top of the seventh.

The Panther offense managed just four hits and five walks in the loss. Umphres and Koehn Ribordy each doubled, and Kaiser and Slade Mohr each singled. Grove reached on a pair of walks.

Great Bend moves to 18-6 on the season and travels to Manhattan for a pair of games against the Indians on Wednesday.

Evangel Beats Friends twice to win KCAC Softball Championship

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Salvador Perez hit a three-run homer, Brady Singer pitched six dominant innings and the Kansas City Royals beat the Texas Rangers 7-1 on Friday night.

Perez hit his eighth home run of the season in Kansas City's six-run seventh inning to break open what was a pitcher's duel. Kyle Isbel, Vinnie Pasquantino and Bobby Witt Jr. had RBI singles before Perez gave the Royals a 7-1 lead.

“That was amazing, I hadn't seen it that special since 2021 when I hit 48 home runs and I appreciate the fans in Kansas City,” Perez said. “We're winning right now and hopefully it stays that way. I think they feel the same energy we have in the dugout.”

Prior to that, Michael Lorenzen had his best start of the season for Texas, giving up three hits and one run — on a homer by Hunter Renfroe — in six innings. He walked two and struck out three while throwing 86 pitches.

“They're an athletic team and they're going to swing,” Lorenzen said. "You just have to trust your defense and believe they're going to do a good job behind you.

Cole Winn (0-1) then gave up four runs in one-third of an inning and Jose Urena gave up two more before closing out the inning.

“I think you can attribute Cole being a little off,” Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said. “His command and everything was a little bit off tonight.”

The Royals have won three straight and seven of their last 10. The Rangers had won three of their previous four.

Singer allowed just one run and four hits while striking out eight with no walks. He hasn’t given up more than one run in five of his seven starts this season.

“I was happy to get out of the sixth there honestly,” Singer said. “I didn't want to walk anybody after the last couple outings and I just went out there and attacked the strike zone.”

The lone blemish against Singer came on an RBI single by Corey Seager that drove in Marcus Semien in the third inning.

John Schreiber (3-0) worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh, striking out Semien to keep the score at 1-1 before the Royals' big inning in the bottom half.

“We had no room for error and Schreiber has been excellent,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “To get where we were in that game, we don't get there without Schreiber.”

The Rangers placed RHP Nathan Eovaldi on the 15-day IL (right groin strain) and recalled RHP Yerry Rodriguez from Triple-A Round Rock.

Texas RHP Dane Dunning (3-2, 4.13 ERA) goes against Royals RHP Michael Wacha (1-3, 4.24) on Saturday.

Brady Singer pitches 6 dominant innings as Royals beat Rangers 7-1

As the 2012 movie
title said, many who step into the batter’s box have “Trouble with the Curve.”
For a pair of KVGB “Sports Day” hosts, it was something else: trouble with the
changeup. Voice of the Panthers Aaron Clark and Mike Courson recently faced off
against Lady Panther varsity softball pitchers Paige Thexton, Braelyn Turner,
and Chayla Prendergast. Results were mixed.

“Most of the time,
we work behind the scenes covering the athletes,” Courson said. “It’s always
fun to step out and see exactly what the opposition is seeing. Big thanks to
Coach Carrie Minton and the team for letting us interrupt a practice for some
entertainment purposes.”

Courson once faced
off against Lady Panther All-State pitcher Hunter Middleton but that was a few fast-twitch muscles ago. Wednesday, he stepped into the box first against Turner, who leads the team with 61.2 innings pitched and 55 strikeouts this season. Her best pitch, a
curve, went into the dirt, er, the brown turf at Barton Community College for
ball one. Courson hit a weak pop up to third base on the next &nbsp;- one that would easily be fielded by any
varsity third baseman, especially Lady Panther Denver Ringo.

“We weren’t
expected to make contact,” Courson said. “So, yeah, it was a weak fly ball in
the infield. But I feel like it put the team on notice that I was there to hit.”

Thexton next
stepped into the circle against Courson, again opening with a ball low. He took
her next pitch up the middle. Normally, the Fort Hays State-bound Thexton can
be found at shortstop. In her absence, the ball snuck by for a base hit.


“No pitcher wants to give up a base hit,” Courson said. “But the ball cleanly
reached the outfield. Had I chosen to run, I would have safely made it to
first. I feel like I beat the shift, but I think Paige would have thrown me
out.”

Then it was
Prendergast’s turn. The freshman has tossed 56.2 innings and struck out 51 in her first varsity season. After a ball, she fooled Courson with a changeup that left
the rest of the team giggling.

“I was throwing fastballs outside,” Prendergast said. “On the
second time, I started with a changeup on the outside. I really like it when my
changeup works. It's funny.”

All three pitchers enjoy the snap of a fastball in the glove for a
strikeout. But there’s also a certain satisfaction of completely fooling a
batter.

“It's so much fun watching them swing so early or try to pull it
back so they don't swing out,” Thexton said. “Even when it's in the dirt,
that's when it's the funniest because it's not even a strike and they're
swinging at it.”

Deciding which pitch to throw comes down to a variety of factors,
including where the batter is standing in the box.

“If they're hugging the plate really far, then you want to go
outside because it's harder for them to reach it, or you can also jam them
inside,” said Prendergast. “If they're also hugging you, that's when you do
your curve. You wouldn't really do a screw because it would probably hit them.”

The team allowed Courson to take a couple cuts off Prendergast. He
hit one slicing bloop down the right field line. While he watched to see it if
stayed fair, freshman Camdyn Post hustled from her outfield spot to snag the
ball. Post recently gunned down a runner at home plate from a spot farther out.
Before Courson pondered if he could have run it out for a single, Minton
confirmed: you would have been out. 

The changeup still in his mind, Courson got around late to the one ball right
field and made his final contact on a groundout to sophomore Alyssa McCauley,
who has varsity innings in the circle this year, but fielded the last hit for
an easy force out at first.

Then it was Clark’s turn to fit a helmet over his long locks. By
his own admission, the 6-foot-7 play-by-play man last saw a pitch during
machine-pitch baseball in the second grade. Accordingly, he went down swinging
against Turner.

The Lady Panther pitchers rarely see players as tall as Clark, but
they do see opponents of various heights and in various stances, presenting a
different strike zone for each batter.

“You just have to adjust to their strike zone,” Turner said. “Sometimes
they're a little bit taller or shorter. You just have to adjust your release
point.”

Thexton, a standout shortstop who has thrown just 7.2 innings this season with 10 strikeouts and a 0.913 ERA, then returned to the circle. She caught Clark looking on a
ball right down the middle, much to the delight of catcher Kamryn Koelsch, doubling as an umpire, then
fooled Clark with a changeup.

“Their ability to
effortlessly swap between pitches, they don't give anything away with their
wind up or stance in the circle,” he said. “It all looks the same until you're
reaching outside or swinging in the dirt.”

Thexton ended up
striking out Clark, but she said just because a batter looks foolish on a
changeup does not mean going right back to the off-speed pitch.

“If I don't strike them out on the changeup, I do like to come
back with some speed to hopefully keep them off balance more,” she said. “Even
with the next batter, I normally won't start with off-speed. I'll keep coming
with what I've got.”

Finally, Clark squared off against Prendergast. He made his first
contact on a foul ball that found Koelsch’s glove – a strike. He grounded out
the next pitch to McCauley at first.

“It's almost the
opposite of what I thought,” he said. “They use fast balls to kind of lull you
to sleep and get you used to a certain tempo and speed of pitch, and then throw
that changeup. It makes it hard to get comfortable or in any sort of rhythm. I
think all three of the gals I faced got me swinging hard on a changeup I didn't
come close to touching.”

As intimidating as it
was, Clark, who played football at Emporia State University, was pleased at the
opportunity to see the Lady Panthers in action – from behind the facemask of a
batting helmet.

“It was a ton of fun,”
he said. “I get to see the gals play on the diamond all the time and it was
awesome getting to see some of their pitches firsthand. Huge thank you to Coach
Minton for letting us come out and interrupt practice as well as to all the
players who only laughed at us a little bit.”&nbsp;

McCauley did not pitch in practice but has 7.2 innings in the circle this year for the Lady Panthers. She has three strikeouts and a 2.74 ERA.

Into the box: Eagle Radio guys face off against Lady Panthers

was the hero a couple times last year as a freshman on the Lady Panther
softball team. She reclaimed her title Friday afternoon in Salina after
delivering a game-winning double in the sixth inning. The Lady Panthers held on
to beat Salina South 6-5. Great Bend dropped game two to McPherson 6-0.

Against South, Great
Bend scored runs in the first, third, and fifth innings to lead 4-0 heading
into the sixth. That’s when the Cougars decided to take the lead with a
five-run frame. 

Kamryn Koelsch
opened the bottom of the sixth with a single. Ava Kaiser, running for Koelsch,
advanced to second base on a sac bunt from Denver Ringo. Kaiser moved to third
on a groundout from Alyssa McCauley, then scored on an error off Chayla
Prendergast’s bat to tie the game. Rylee Prilling came in to run for
Prendergast and scored what proved to be the game-winning run after Mazouch hit
a two-out double to right field.

Braelyn Turner
pitched five scoreless innings to open the game, striking out one and allowing
five hits. Prendergast took over in the fifth, allowing five earned runs on two
hits and three strikeouts. Prendergast remained in the game into the seventh,
walking her sixth batter of the game before Turner returned to the circle.
Ringo threw out a runner at home for the second out, and Turner forced a popup
to Koelsch behind the plate to end the game.

Koelsch singled
three times and drove in a run. Paige Thexton singled, doubled, and added a
team-high 21st walk of the season, coming around to score two of the
six runs. DeShawnna Bryant singled twice and drove in two. Camdyn Post singled
and scored twice.

Turner threw four
shutout innings to begin game two. The Pups singled and homered in the fifth to
open up a 2-0 lead, then plated four more runs in the sixth. Turner allowed six
earned runs on nine hits with three strikeouts. Prendergast recorded the final
out.

The Lady Panther
offense was held to just a single apiece from Post and McCauley.

Great Bend moves
to 18-6 on the season ahead of next Tuesday’s home games against TMP.

hits and three strikeouts. Prendergast remained in the game into the seventh,
walking her sixth batter of the game before Turner returned to the circle.
Ringo threw out a runner at home for the second out, and Turner forced a popup
to Koelsch behind the plate to end the game.Koelsch singled

Great Bend High School senior Maddox Spray announced his commitment to Barton Community College to play basketball next season.

Spray was named to the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) 2nd Team this winter.

Royals open 3-game series with the Rangers

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.
(AP) — With the expanded College Football Playoff locked in through
2031, questions still remain about what the rest of the postseason
will look like. One thing is certain, there will still be bowls. Nick
Carparelli, the executive director of the organization that
represents bowls games, a more professionalized version of college
football could quell players opting-out of bowls by tying
compensation to postseason participation. He also said giving bowl
organizers more freedom to make matchups could help create more
compelling games.

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) —
Georgia’s Kirby Smart has agreed to a contract extension that makes
him the highest-paid coach in college football with an annual salary
of $13 million. Smart surpasses Clemson’s Dabo Swinney, who is set
to make $11 million in 2024. Smart gets a bump in salary of $1.75
million annually as part of the deal, which ties him to the Bulldogs
through 2033. He could also receive up to $1.55 million per year in
bonuses based on the new 12-team playoff structure, an increase from
$1.3 million under the previous terms. Athletic director Josh Brooks
got an extension that raises his salary to $1.275 million annually.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) —
Josh Hart made a go-ahead 3-pointer from the top of the arc with 24.4
seconds left, and the New York Knicks beat the Philadelphia 76ers
118-115 in Game 6 to advance to the Eastern Conference semifinals.
Jalen Brunson had 41 points and 12 assists to lead the Knicks, who
move on to face the Indiana Pacers. Game 1 is Monday in New York. The
