George Kirby allowed three hits over seven shutout innings, Luke
Raley hit a two-run homer and drove in three runs, and the Seattle
Mariners beat the Kansas City Royals 6-2. A night that started with a
lucky fan catching foul balls on consecutive pitches ended with
another dominant pitching performance that helped the Mariners
improve to 19-11 over the past 30 games. Kirby had been bothered by a
sore knee, but was terrific in striking out six and walking none.
Raley's homer was his second of the season. Ty France also hit a
two-run homer in the eighth inning. Kansas City starter Brady Singer
allowed a season-high nine hits.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP)
— The St. Louis Cardinals scored eight runs in the seventh inning
and rallied from a four-run deficit for a 10-5 victory over the Los
Angeles Angels. Nolan Arenado homered and Matt Carpenter had a tying
two-run single during the surge. St. Louis sent 14 batters to the
plate during a rally capped by a two-run single from Iván Herrera,
who had two hits in the inning. Kevin Pillar hit a two-run homer and
Kyren Paris had an RBI double during a four-run third inning for the

defeat the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 in overtime in the Super Bowl.
The Ravens-Chiefs opener at Arrowhead Stadium will be a Thursday
night game on NBC. Kansas City will be going for a third straight
Super Bowl title and fourth in six years this season.

overcame a Dallas franchise playoff record of 13 blocks, rallying for

Cleveland Cavaliers 109-102 in Game 4 to take a commanding 3-1 lead
in their East semifinal series. Jaylen Brown added 27 for the
Celtics, who can close out Cleveland with a win in Game 5 on
Wednesday at home. The Cavs got pushed to the brink of elimination
with Donovan Mitchell and Jarrett Allen out with injuries. It was
nothing new for a Cleveland team that dealt with injuries all season,
but it was a big ask. Tatum added 11 rebounds and five assists.

Prosecutors allege Ippei Mizuhara stole nearly $17 million from the
Japanese baseball player to pay off debts. He has agreed to a plea
deal on one count of bank fraud and one count of subscribing to a
false tax return. But first he's likely to enter a not-guilty plea as
a formality during his arraignment Tuesday in federal court in Los
Angeles. Authorities say there was no evidence that Ohtani was
involved in or aware of Mizuhara’s gambling.

PARIS (AP) — Diego
Maradona’s heirs want to stop the auction of a trophy he was
awarded after the 1986 World Cup won by Argentina. It had been
missing for decades and recently resurfaced. Their lawyer told The
Associated Press he will launch an urgent request to have the Golden
Ball withdrawn from the sale next month in Paris. He told the AP he
will also request a judicial sequestration of the trophy and file a
complaint for theft and concealed theft. Maradona died in 2020 at age
60. He captained Argentina in its 3-2 win over West Germany in the
1986 final in Mexico City. Maradona’s heirs say the trophy was
stolen and claim the current owner cannot be entitled to sell it.

NEW YORK (AP) — The Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs will open the regular season at home against the Baltimore Ravens on Sept. 5 in a rematch of the AFC title game, the NFL announced Monday.

Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs will be going for an unprecedented third straight Super Bowl title and fourth in six years this season. Mahomes is 4-1 in his career against Lamar Jackson and the Ravens.

Kansas City will begin the season at home for the second straight year and is 9-2 in openers under Andy Reid. The Chiefs lost 21-20 to Detroit in their 2023 opener.

In addition to Mahomes, the Chiefs bring back star tight end Travis Kelce, who agreed to a $34.5 million, two-year contract extension last month, and All-Pro defensive tackle Chris Jones, who signed a five-year, $158.75 million deal in March.

Monday on Sports Day (Watch)

The postseason has officially arrived for prep swimmers around the state. League championships were held last week. For Great Bend, that meant a trip to rival Garden City last Thursday. The Lady Buffs scored 419 points to secure the Western Athletic Conference championship. Great Bend scored 366 points for second, and Hays followed with 258 points in third.

Josephine Mazouch swam under the automatic state qualifying time to win the 100-yard free by a quarter-second in 58.67. Darcy Feist finished fifth in 1:03.87, and Meredith Mazouch placed sixth in 1:04.15.

Josephine won the title in the 50-yard free, winning by 0.29 seconds in 26.95. The time was just a third of a second from automatic state qualification. Meredith swam third in 28.26, and Ellie Lutt finished seventh in 29.77.&nbsp;

The 200 free relay team of both Mazouchs, Emilee Hall, and Sydney Kruckenberg won their league title in a photo finish. Their time of 1:50.84 was just 0.06 seconds faster than Hays. Great Bend's team of Feist, Ava Gregg, Madelynne Siefkes, and Clarise Snapp placed fourth in 2:00.06 to miss the bronze by just over two seconds.

Hall claimed an individual gold in the 100 back by seven seconds in 1:07.07. Olivia Boone finished sixth for the Panthers in 1:36.79. Hall finished second in the 100 butterfly in 1:06.73 to miss another title by five seconds. Avah Holden placed eighth in 1:34.61, and Shatarah Newton swam 10th in 1:45.32.

Snapp placed third in the 200 IM in 2:51.17, 11 seconds off the silver. Gregg placed fourth in 2:52.59, more than a second behind the bronze, and Seifkes swam eighth in 3:06.33. Kruckenberg finished fifth in the 200 free in 2:27.81 to miss the bronze by three seconds. Carper hit the wall next in 2:28.33 for sixth. Snapp also placed third in the 100 breast in 1:21.13 to miss the silver by just 0.25 seconds. Gregg finished fifth in 1:25.55.

Carper led the team in the 500 free race in 6:43.70 for third, just four seconds shy of the silver. Lutt placed fifth in 7:00.27, and Mermis finished sixth in 7:14.74.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Seth Lugo racked up a career-high 12 strikeouts and allowed one run over eight strong innings, and Hunter Renfroe had a two-run single against his former team in the Kansas City Royals' 4-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday.

Freddie Fermin and Michael Massey also had RBIs during the Royals' four-run fourth inning, and Lugo (6-1) made it stand up as Kansas City took three of four from the Angels.

Lugo allowed five hits while continuing his outstanding start to his first season with the Royals, winning for the AL-best sixth time in eight starts and lowering his ERA to an AL-best 1.66.

“To strike out 12 and only throw 112 pitches, that’s really remarkable,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “Just the confidence that you have when he’s out there. He just comes out and it feels like he’s in total control all the time.”

Lugo overcame slight early control issues, retired 11 straight at one point, and didn't walk a batter for the first time all season. The longtime Mets right-hander has allowed two earned runs or fewer in eight of his nine starts for Kansas City.

“We were counting on him to be one of the top couple of starters we had,” Quatraro said. “What he’s done so far, I don’t think anybody can bank on that run of starts, but the way he’s done it is really impressive, and he hasn’t wavered. ... I can’t even fathom having nine pitches to choose from, (and) the fact he uses them and they all do something and he can locate all of them.”

Willie Calhoun had an RBI double in the sixth and a solo homer in the ninth for the Halos, who have lost 17 of 23 with a major league-worst 14 players on the injured list.

Los Angeles has lost all six of its series at the Big A this season, failing to win consecutive home games at any point.

Patrick Sandoval (2-6) allowed 11 hits for Los Angeles, but pitched into the seventh inning and only allowed runs during the Royals' fourth-inning rally. Sandoval has lost five of his last seven starts.

“The takeaway from his start is he should be pleased,” Angels manager Ron Washington said. “One inning (was bad), and sometimes that happens to you. Sometimes you can recover, and sometimes not. You’ve got to give their pitching staff credit.”

The Royals got five consecutive hits to open the fourth inning. Renfroe, who batted .242 with 19 homers in 126 games for the Angels last season, drove in Nelson Velasquez and Fermin with his bases-loaded single before Massey drove in Dairon Blanco with a sacrifice bunt.

The Angels couldn't get to Lugo until Mickey Moniak singled in the sixth and Calhoun drove him home.

Calhoun capped his three-hit game with his first homer for the Angels, a solo shot off James McArthur in the ninth. McArthur got two more outs to complete his ninth save.

choice. The Hawks hit the jackpot despite just 3% odds after

final six regular-season games and lost to the Chicago Bulls in the
first round of the play-in tournament. The Hawks haven’t won a
postseason series since a surprising run to the Eastern Conference
finals in 2021. They got knocked out in the first round in 2022 and
2023. Washington, Houston, San Antonio and Detroit rounded out the
top five. The draft is June 26-27 in Brooklyn.

magnate Jack Roush as a co-owner at Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing.
It was Keselowski's 36th career win and his second at Darlington. He
snapped a 110-race winless drought since taking the checkered flag at

Ethan Minaker&nbsp;of the Barton Community College baseball team has been named the week 14 KJCCC West Pitcher of the Week.

Minaker went six shutout innings in last Friday's 6-0 win over Garden City as the Cougars completed a four-game sweep of the Broncbusters. The left-hander struck out six falling one shy from tying his career high set in February while permitting just four hits and walking none in the winning effort.

The award is Miniker's first and the fifth weekly honor for Barton this season joining&nbsp;Cole Schieffer's week 3 selection,&nbsp;Reece Hemmerling's week 5 and week 8 selections and&nbsp;Jaron Cotton's week 7 honor.

NJCAA Baseball Plains Regional Tournament Scores/Schedule

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Jo Adell hit a three-run homer and Kevin Pillar had three hits and three RBIs in the Los Angeles Angels' 9-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Saturday night.

Logan O’Hoppe had a two-run double during a four-run seventh for the Angels, who won for only the sixth time in 22 games.

“We put some good at-bats together in some situations where we certainly needed it,” Angels manager Ron Washington said. “We just want to learn how to sustain it, and if they can sustain it, we can become a very consistent team because we've got some kids out there that are growing.”

Tyler Anderson (3-4) yielded three runs and seven hits over 6 2/3 effective innings for the Halos, ending his five-start winless skid. The left-hander retired 12 straight at one point.

“It's good (to get a victory), but it's a team game, and we're doing a good job staying in a lot of these games,” Anderson said.

Salvador Pérez had an early RBI double for the Royals, whose three-game winning streak ended.

Cole Ragans (2-3) allowed eight hits and seven runs over 6 1/3 innings for Kansas City, recording a season-low three strikeouts in his first loss in four starts.

“I think his delivery looked a little bit out of whack, and I think it affected his command,” Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro said. “His stuff was good. He got into a groove there after the third and kept us in the game. We felt good that he had plenty of pitches (left), but he just didn't execute as well as he would have liked there in the seventh.”

Bobby Witt Jr. singled, stole second and scored on Pérez’s double down the left field line in the first, but Pillar led off the Angels' second with a triple when MJ Melendez misplayed his drive to left.

Adell connected two batters later with a 419-foot shot. The long-hyped prospect could be finding a groove in the majors after a half-decade of false starts, hitting three homers in his last four games and seven this season.

“It all goes back to my decisions in the box and what I swing at,” Adell said.

Cole Tucker, Taylor Ward and Pillar then strung together consecutive singles in the third, and Ward scored on a wild pitch to put the Angels up 5-1.

“Obviously not the best,” Ragans said of his start. “Made some mistakes. Felt like a few times I made some good pitches (and) they hit them hard. A few times, left some pitches over the plate. Fell behind quite a bit, I felt like. Yeah, just not the best.”

After Witt singled home Maikel Garcia in the sixth, the Royals chased Anderson with Kyle Isbel's soft RBI single in the seventh. Angels reliever Adam Cimber escaped a tight jam for the second straight night, allowing no runs for the 15th time in his last 16 appearances.

“Cimber is the man,” Anderson said. “We all love him. If there's nobody on, if there's people on, we just like it when he's in the game.”

Pillar then dropped a bases-loaded, two-out single inside the line in right field in the seventh off reliever Nick Anderson, and O'Hoppe followed with a double to left.

Pillar was designated for assignment by the White Sox last month, and he made his Angels debut May 1, shortly after Mike Trout's knee injury. The veteran is off to a solid start back in his native Los Angeles area, hitting two homers and driving in six runs in a win at Pittsburgh earlier this week.

Kansas City's Seth Lugo (5-1, 1.92 ERA) goes for his sixth victory in his last eight starts when the takes the mound in the series finale against the Angels' Patrick Sandoval (2-5, 4.85 ERA), the beneficiary of Pillar's six-RBI game in Pittsburgh.

Brewers have eight straight wins over the Cardinals, dating to last
season. St. Louis, last in the division and nine games behind
Milwaukee, has the longest current losing streak in the majors.

Atlanta’s Max Fried and two relievers combined for a no-hitter
through 8 2/3 innings before New York’s J.D. Martinez homered to
spoil the bid as the Braves beat the Mets 4-1 on Saturday. Fried
opened with seven no-hit innings and Joe Jiménez worked around a
pair of walks in the eighth before Raisel Iglesias retired the first
two batters of the ninth. Martinez homered just over the wall in
right field on the next pitch off Iglesias. The Braves have not
thrown a no-hitter since Kent Mercker’s gem against the Los Angeles
Dodgers on April 8, 1994. The no-hitter drought is the fourth-longest
in the majors.

Pittsburgh Pirates rookie Paul Skenes made an impressive big league
debut, striking out seven in four-plus innings against the Chicago
Cubs. The 21-year-old Skenes allowed three runs while throwing 84

made its way into PNC Park to watch Skenes, who was the top overall
pick in the 2023 draft and the top-ranked pitching prospect in
baseball. Skenes' more-famous girlfriend, LSU gymnast and social

to stay after needing just seven starts to dominate opponents in
Triple-A.

Jamal Murray rebounded from a rough start to the Western Conference
semifinals with 24 points to lead the Denver Nuggets on a 117-90 romp
in Game 3 that made the Minnesota Timberwolves the last team in the
NBA to lose in this postseason. Nikola Jokic had 24 points, 14
rebounds and nine assists, Michael Porter Jr. scored 21 points and
the Nuggets cut the series lead to 2-1 on the strength of 14-for-29
shooting from 3-point range. Game 4 is Sunday. Anthony Edwards had a
quiet 19 points to lead the Wolves, who went just 9 for 31 from deep.

Celtics looked more like themselves after stumbling at home, beating
the Cleveland Cavaliers 106-93 in Game 3 to take a 2-1 lead in the
Eastern Conference semifinals. The top-seeded Celtics didn’t mess
around after dropping losing Game 2 on their parquet floor by 24.
Tatum scored on a three-point play and the Celtics opened the second
half with 14 straight points to open a 23-point lead. That was way
too much for the Cavs, who overcame a 22-point deficit in the fourth
to stun Boston in March. Donovan Mitchell scored 33 for Cleveland,
but the All-Star guard aggravated a left knee injury in the fourth

Orlando and missed the final three games. He sat out the first two

Kyrie Irving scored 22 points, including a running left-hander in the
lane in the final minute to help Dallas hold on, and the Mavericks
beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 105-101 for a 2-1 lead in the Western
Conference semifinals. Luka Doncic also had 22 points to go with 15
rebounds, and P.J. Washington scored 27, just two shy of his playoff
high from the previous game. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had 31 points,
10 rebounds and four blocks for the Thunder. Oklahoma City has lost
consecutive games after starting 5-0 in the playoffs. Game 4 is
Monday night in Dallas.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) —
Brady Skjei scored on the power play with 3:11 left to help the
Carolina Hurricanes beat the New York Rangers 4-3, staving off a
sweep by winning Game 4 of the second-round playoff series. Skjei’s
shot from the the point came off a feed from Tuevo Teravainen for
Carolina’s first goal with the man advantage in 17 tries in the
series. Evgeny Kuznetsov, Stefan Noesen and Sebastian Aho each scored
for Carolina. Will Cuylle, Barclay Goodrow and Alexis Lafreniere
scored for the Rangers. Game 5 is Monday at Madison Square Garden.

CLIFTON, N.J. (AP) —
Madelene Sagstrom and Rose Zhang left Nelly Korda and everyone else
way behind Saturday in the Cognizant Founders Cup. Trying to win a
record sixth straight LPGA Tour event, Korda was 11 shots behind
Sagstrom and 10 back of two-time NCAA champion Zhang with a round
left at Upper Montclair Country Club. After months of near-perfect
play, Korda inexplicably hit bad drives, found bunkers from the
fairway and missed short putts. She shot a 1-over 73. Sagstrom, who
has played well on this course the last three years, had a 66 to get
to 19-under 197. Zhang, who won in her professional debut in New
Jersey state a year ago, had a 67 after lipping out on a short birdie
putt at No. 18.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)
— Rory McIlroy shot a bogey-free 4-under 67 on Saturday to pull
within a stroke of leader Xander Schauffele with a round left in the
Wells Fargo Championship. Schauffele, who entered the day four shots
ahead of McIlroy and Jason Day, had a 70 to get to 12-under 201 as he
looks to hold on and snap a 38-tournament victory drought. Sungjae Im
was four shots strokes back after holing out from bunker on No. 18 to
save par and shoot 69. Sepp Straka matched McIlroy’s low round of
67 and was alone in fourth at 7 under, while Day was fifth at 5 under
— making five bogeys in a 73.

UNDATED (AP) — The
NCAA has approved a waiver that will allow men’s and women’s
basketball programs to pay for unlimited official recruiting visits
to help teams deals with roster depletion caused by transfers,
according to a memo obtained by The Associated Press. The Athletic
first reported the approval of a blanket waiver by the men’s and
women’s basketball oversight committees. Currently, men’s
basketball programs are allowed 28 official visits over a rolling
two-year period. The number for women’s programs is 24. The waiver
is effective immediately and the NCAA Division I Council will
consider eliminating the cap on official visits in basketball
permanently in June.

SEATTLE (AP) —
Grand Canyon University and Seattle University will join the West
Coast Conference beginning with the 2025-26 season, giving the
conference 11 full members for the first time in its history. The two
schools are currently affiliated with the Western Athletic
Conference. The current WCC membership is mostly based in California.
The only two schools outside of the state that are currently full
members are Gonzaga and Portland. Grand Canyon and Seattle will
compete in 14 of the 16 sports offered by the WCC, but most of the
attention will be on basketball.

NCAA has approved a waiver that will allow men’s and women’s
basketball programs to pay for unlimited official recruiting visits
to help teams deals with roster depletion caused by transfers,
according to a memo obtained by The Associated Press. The Athletic
first reported the approval of a blanket waiver by the men’s and
women’s basketball oversight committees. Currently, men’s
basketball programs are allowed 28 official visits over a rolling
two-year period. The number for women’s programs is 24. The waiver
is effective immediately and the NCAA Division I Council will
consider eliminating the cap on official visits in basketball
permanently in June.SEATTLE (AP) —
Grand Canyon University and Seattle University will join the West
Coast Conference beginning with the 2025-26 season, giving the
conference 11 full members for the first time in its history. The two
schools are currently affiliated with the Western Athletic
Conference. The current WCC membership is mostly based in California.
The only two schools outside of the state that are currently full
members are Gonzaga and Portland. Grand Canyon and Seattle will
compete in 14 of the 16 sports offered by the WCC, but most of the

Producing 12 runs in Thursday's series opening victory, the Barton Community College baseball team exceeded that mark plating 18 runs to complete a sweep of Fort Scott Community College on Friday afternoon in the opening round of the Region VI Baseball Tournament at Lions Field.

Cole Schieffer tied his career high four-RBIs while Robby Bolin, Jaron Cotton and Ayden Hadley each drove in three apiece to defeat the Greyhounds for the second straight day in seven-innings with an 18-7 victory in Game 2, winning the best-of-3 series 2-0.

Moving to 39-19 on the year, the Cougars advance to the eight-team double-elimination Central District Tournament for the third straight year. Winners of six straight after the sweep, No. 10 seeded Barton will begin play Wednesday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. against the No. 2 seed and Jayhawk West champion Blue Dragons of Hutchinson Community College from Eck Stadium on the Campus of Wichita, KS. Meanwhile the Greyhounds have their season end at the hands of the Cougars for the second straight year finishing at 39-19.

The Cougars scored 15 or more runs for the 10th time this season, while putting up runs in four of the seven innings, outhitting Fort Scott for the second straight day 13-9. Barton took advantage of four Fort Scott miscues, eight walks and three hit-by-pitches. 

Jetting out to a 3-0 lead in the second, the first Greyhound error ensuing Grant Nottlemann's leadoff single and a wild pitch formed Cesar Gomez sacrifice-fly with back-to-back Schieffer and Bolin run producing doubles with two-outs capped the three-run inning.

Hadley's reaching on a Fort Scott error in the third brought in Owen Clyne's leadoff walk increasing the Cougar advantage to 4-0.

After Fort Scott closed within 4-3 in the third with a Barton error prolonging the inning creating a two-run double and run producing groundout, the Cougars answered in a big way in the fourth sending 14 to the plate and scoring nine runs stretching the lead to 13-3.

Schieffer delivered the first blow in the fourth just two batters in blasting his third-round tripper of the season scoring Hank Orr's leadoff double. Tacking on seven more runs behind a passed ball, pair of RBI Kyler Horsman and Hadley singles, two bases loaded walks by Orr and Bolin mixed between another Fort Scott miscue scoring one and ninth run crossing on Cotton's sacrifice fly.

The offensive production continued for Barton batting around in the fifth while adding five more runs. Hadley increased the lead by two with his second fence clearer of the season following Nottlemann's one-out single. Taking advantage of an Orr plunking and Schieffer walk, Bolin delivered his third RBI with his second double of the game followed by Cotton's two-run single scoring a pair to make it 18-3.

Despite the Greyhounds scoring the final four runs of the game with two in the bottom of the fifth and two in the seventh, Jackson MacWilliams helped lock down the run rule victory going 0.1-innings escaping Fort Scott's bases loaded situation to end the game.

Starting pitcher Aidan Sowers earned a no-decision, tossing 3.1-innings scattering three hits, three runs (one-earned), walking six and fanning two.

Bradley Feezer (4-3) notched the win out of the bullpen going 1.2-innings permitting two runs on two hits and walking one before handing off to Anthony Treto for 1.2-innings with the freshman yielding four hits, two runs with a walk and strikeout.

Hoisington 12, Russell 2 - Cardinals advance to Regional semis

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Adam Frazier hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning and the Kansas City Royals rallied for a 2-1 victory over the hapless Los Angeles Angels on Friday night.

MJ Melendez delivered a one-out single off Angels closer Carlos Estévez (0-2) before Frazier put his first homer in 31 games this season into the short porch in right field. Frazier, who got two hits to boost his average to .188, hadn't homered in 74 games since last July 30 with Baltimore.

“I've been working on a lot of different things,” Frazier said. “I probably changed ideas 10 times today, to be honest. ... The last couple of at-bats, just kind of relaxed and let the hands take over. Just tried to get the body out of the way and swing easy.”

Melendez had three hits for Kansas City, which has won three straight and seven of 10. Tyler Duffey (1-0) pitched the eighth to earn his first victory since 2022.

Jo Adell homered and Griffin Canning pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings for the Angels, who have lost 16 of 21 after Estévez's third blown save in his last six opportunities.

Matt Thaiss got a one-out double off John Schreiber in the bottom of the ninth, but Schreiber got two grounders to wrap up his first save of the season with his new team.

Alec Marsh struck out seven while pitching one-run ball into the sixth inning in his return from injury, but the Royals were two outs away from their second shutout loss of the season before they came back. Marsh hadn’t pitched since getting hit in the elbow by a comebacker on April 25.

“We were in it the whole time,” Marsh said. “No one thought we were losing that game. ... That's what you live for right there — coming back in those games and sneaking those wins out. The bats didn't show up for the first couple of innings, but this team has got so much fight. Doesn't matter if it's the beginning of the game or the ending of the game. If we score, we're going to win.”

The Angels got a big game from Adell, who made a diving catch on Michael Massey's line drive in the top of the fifth. He hit his sixth homer of the season several minutes later, driving a 436-foot shot off the artificial rock formation beyond the center field fence at the Big A.

Canning came through with his best start in a rocky season, holding the Royals to three hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

“I don’t think the at-bats were poor,” Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro said. “You’ve got to tip your cap to Canning. Looked like the changeup was really giving us trouble. He was getting it down below the barrel, and then the balls we did square up, Adell made a great play on Massey. That's a leadoff double, maybe triple. Who knows?"

After reliever Adam Cimber escaped Canning's sixth-inning jam by striking out Massey, Matt Moore and Luis García each threw a scoreless inning before Estévez blew it.

Niko Goodrum drew a walk and stole a base in his debut with the Angels, who claimed him off waivers from Tampa Bay on Thursday.

Luis Guillorme doubled in his second game with the Angels, who have added several stopgap veterans to fill the injury holes left by Mike Trout, Anthony Rendon, Brandon Drury, Luis Rengifo and Miguel Sano.

Royals: LHP Daniel Lynch was sent back to Triple-A Omaha to make room for Marsh, who came off the 15-day injured list.

Angels: INF Ehire Adrianza went on the 10-day injured list with back spasms. The move is retroactive to Thursday.

LHP Tyler Anderson (2-4, 2.74 ERA) takes the mound for Los Angeles in the third game of the series Saturday, facing Kansas City LHP Cole Ragans (2-2, 3.38 ERA).

Points were at a premium for the Panther boys at Thursday's Western Athletic Conference Championships in Dodge City. Hays won the team title with 121 points, followed by Garden City with 86 and Dodge City with 72. Great Bend finished fifth with 35 points.

Freshman Cooper Ohnmacht did most of the damage in the jumps. Coming off a school-record triple jump of 46-5-5 -one of just two marks beyond 46 feet this spring in Kansas - Ohnmacht won the WAC title at 45-4. Hays junior Kamani Jones, a regional and likely state competitor, took the silver at 44-0. Sophomore Kellen Brown placed fourth for Great Bend at 41-1.5 to miss the bronze by eight inches, and junior Ben Nicholson finished 10th at 37-8. Ohnmacht also won the long jump title by three inches at 20-9.25. Brown placed 10th at 18-2.

The Panther 4x8 team of Braylon Moore, Diego Pasos, Tavon Stroup, and Ismael Ramirez cut 12 seconds off a season-best to win the title by three seconds in 8:25.66. Great Bend's time is the eighth-fastest in Class 5A this spring. The 4x4 team of Moore, Pasos, Pedro Enriquez, and Ramiro Rocho finished fourth in 3:39.37, four seconds behind the bronze.

Ohnmacht, Panther boys 4x8 team win WAC titles

The Lady Panther track and field team entered Thursday's Western Athletic Conference Championships in Dodge City as the three-time defending champions. They also entered the meet coming off a recent tie against league-rival Hays. Great Bend piled up 119 points to secure its fourth-straight title. Hays finished second with 103.5 points, and Dodge City scored 64.5 points for third.

The Lady Panthers swept the distance events. Senior Addy Nicholson ran off a season-best in the 3200m run but still won by nearly five seconds in 11:57.81. Junior Marissa Boone finished third in 12:09.08, and senior Morgan Beckwith placed fourth in 12:13.46.

Nicholson won another individual gold in the 1600m run in 5:27.62 to beat Garden City's Cate Wiese by a second. Lady Panther sophomore Sienna Smith ran third in 5:30.63, and freshman Teah King placed seventh in 5:48.40.

Great Bend dominated the 800m run with the top three medals. Senior Eliana Beckham, ranked No. 9 in a tough 5A field, just missed a personal best for the gold in 2:21.07. Sophomore Reese Bullard won the silver in 2:28.12, and Smith finished third in 2:28.86.

Beckham, Bullard, Kate Welcher, and Bella Long joined to bring home the 4x800m title in 10:22.81, eight seconds in front of second-place Liberal. The 4x4 squad of Bullard, Beckham, Smith, and Daizy Gomez finished second in 4:11.77, two-plus seconds behind Liberal.

Senior Sadie Spray moved her best high jump of the season up two inches at 5-4. That would have tied her for the 5A lead, but Hays junior Katie Linenberger also added two inches to her season best to win the WAC title and move into sole possession of the 5A lead. Lady Panther junior Cassie Ellegood won the bronze at 5-2.

Spray also picked up heavy points in the hurdle events. She ran second in the 300s in 48.77 to miss the gold by half a second. Spray ran just off her No. 12 time in 5A. Long finished eighth in 55.24. Spray won the 100m hurdle bronze in 16.43, missing the silver by 0.1 second. Freshman Kayle Baldwin ran 10th in 18.78.

Nachtigal still ranks No. 1 in Class 5A and fifth overall in Kansas with a best throw of 141-4. Sophomore MacKenzie Lindberg placed fifth at 100-7, and sophomore Kimberly Hofflinger finished seventh at 92-8.

Lindberg won the WAC title in the discus on a throw of 107-7, edging out Hofflinger's second-place throw by a single inch. Sophomore Natalee Daniels finished eighth at 82-10.

Sophomore Allie Gerhart nearly completed the sweep with a silver medal in the shot on a throw of 35-8, 16 inches shy of the gold. Daniels placed third at 33-4.75, and Hofflinger finished seventh at 29-2.75.

Baldwin won the pole vault bronze at 8-6, a foot short of the silver. Sophomore Kaylea McMullen also cleared 8-6 for fourth.

Lady Panthers win fourth straight WAC track and field title

Jazmine Williamson and Christopher Young of the Barton Community College track and field program have been named the U.S. Track &amp; Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Outdoor Women and Men's National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Athletes of the Week.

Williamson piled up 26 points across three events for the now nation's top ranked women's team leading the Cougars to its 33rd Region VI title and 32nd KJCCC West Division crown.

Also named the Championships' Women's Field Athlete of the Meet on Saturday, Williamson began her trek on Friday in the long jump by riding the wind-aided runway with two marks over 21-feet including launching a program 2nd best ever mark of 6.50m (21-04.50) that ranks 5th all-time on the outdoor list.

On Saturday the sophomore finished runner-up in her other two events, posting another personal best in the triple jump (11.96m, 39-03.00) before winding up in the high jump at 1.68m (5-06.00).

Earning the men's High Point Athlete of the Meet for the 5th ranked Cougars, Young piled up 36 points competing in four events across two days helping Barton to the Region VI runner-up placing.

The duo's personal best efforts land No. 7 and No. 10 on the NJCAA's all-time chart.On Saturday Young would again earn a runner-up finish in the shot put (17.68m, 58-00.25) with Hayles coming fourth at (16.49m, 54-01.25) then concluded busy two days by winning the hammer with a season best 55.32m (181-06) effort as freshman Boris Peranovic marked a personal best 50.46m (165-06) to punch his event ticket at nationals.Williamson's award becomes the Barton women's 11th USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week award and the fourth this season as Cedricka Williams won the honor three times this year. Other award winners include: Kelsie Murrell-Ross (2022), Nia Robinson (once each in 2022 and 2021), Lashanna Graham (2021), Yoveinny Mota (twice in 2019) and Lydia Mato (2015).
