The student-athletes attending 2024 Big 12 Football Media Days presented by Totino's have been announced. In addition to the players, each school’s head coach will also be in attendance.

The two-day event will be held at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Tuesday, July 9 and Wednesday, July 10. 

ESPNU and Big 12 Now on ESPN+ will provide television coverage beginning at Noon CT on Wednesday and 12:30 p.m. CT on Thursday.

Big 12 Football Media Days set for Tuesday and Wednesday

MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State Athletics will honor a group of 10 outstanding individuals with induction into its Athletics Hall of Fame in August.

The 2024 Hall of Fame class includes two football greats in Nick Leckey and Kevin Lockett, a pair of men's basketball legends in Askia Jones and Jacob Pullen, former women's basketball head coach Deb Patterson, Diana Miller (women's basketball), Scott Sellers (track and field), Kim Zschau (volleyball), and Carl and Mary Ice (contributors).

"This year's class of 10 individuals is a phenomenal group, and we are thrilled to welcome them into the K-State Athletics Hall of Fame," said Kenny Lannou, Executive Associate Athletics Director for Communications and K-State Athletics Hall of Fame Chairperson. "Each of these inductees have made a lasting impact on K-State Athletics and Kansas State University, and we look forward to welcoming them back to Manhattan this fall for a special induction weekend."

The class is the 14th in the history of the K-State Athletics Hall of Fame, including the charter class of 1990, and will be honored during the weekend of August 30. Official induction ceremonies will take place on Friday, August 30, before the inductees are recognized at halftime of the football game against UT Martin the following day.

More ceremony details will be announced later this summer.

K-State Athletics Hall of Fame – Class of 2024 Biographies

The all-time wins leader in Kansas State women's basketball history after compiling a 350-226 record over her 18 seasons at the helm. Kansas State had just four NCAA tournament appearances when Patterson took over in 1996. In just her first season the Wildcats went 19-12, posting their first winning conference record in five years and first NCAA appearance in 10 years. Patterson guided the program to nine NCAA tournament appearances, nine 20-win seasons, two Big 12 regular season titles (2004 and 2008) and one WNIT crown (2006). Under Patterson, 10 Wildcats garnered All-America honors and two were named Big 12 Player of the Year (Nicole Ohlde 2003, 2004 and Kendra Wecker 2005). Five of K-State's top-six career scorers played under Patterson. She was twice named Big 12 Coach of the Year in 2002 and 2008 after leading the Wildcats to third and first place finishes, respectively. She was named a finalist for national coach of the year on three separate occasions (2002, 2003 and 2005) by two different organizations. In addition to coaching K-State, Patterson served as an assistant for three gold medal winning USA National Teams (1997, 1998 and 2000).

Long-time supporters of both University and athletics projects and programs. Carl Ice is a career railroader and served as president and CEO of BNSF Railway. He began his career with Santa Fe Railway after graduating from the Kansas State University College of Engineering in 1979. His wife, Mary, is a 1980 graduate of the College of Health and Human Sciences and earned a master's degree from the College of Education. Together they serve on the board of trustees of the KSU Foundation, and, in October 2019, Carl became Chairman of the KSU Foundation Board of Directors. Carl is also a past chair of the College of Engineering Advisory Council, former member of the Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering Advisory Council, and through the Ice's generosity have been honored as the first college in Kansas State University history to be named the "Carl R. Ice College of Engineering". Mary is a former member of the President's Advisory Committee in Intercollegiate Athletics and the Ahearn Fund Advisory Group along with K-State Alumni Association board of directors and also served as president of the College of Health and Human Sciences Alumni Advisory Board.

A four-year letterman (1989-94) for head coaches Lon Kruger and Dana Altman, Jones led the Wildcats to 85 wins to go with 4 postseason appearances (2 NCAA Tournaments and 2 NITs). He finished his career with 1,834 points, which ranks fourth all-time in school history. Jones is perhaps best known for his school-record 62-point effort vs. Fresno State in the 1994 Postseason NIT. Many of Jones's accolades from that game still stand, as he holds school records for most points in a half (45), most 3-point field goals made (14) and attempted (18). During a record-setting senior year in 1993-94, Jones became the second Wildcat (joining Mitch Richmond) to score 700 or more points in a single season. His 22.1 points per game average that season still ranks sixth for a single season, while his 20.2 points per game average in league play places eighth. In addition, Jones' name still ranks among the best in many single-season and career 3-point categories, including first in single-season made (110) and attempted (279), second in career 3-point field goals attempted (624) and third in career 3-point field goals made (237). His 38.0 career 3-point field goal percentage also still places 10th.

Leckey did not allow a sack his entire career at K-State and started 41 consecutive games. In the 2002 and 2003 seasons, Leckey earned First Team All-America honors. He was a finalist for the 2003 Rimington Trophy (nation's best center) and was an All-Big 12 First Team honoree in both 2002 and 2003. He helped lead the Wildcats to a Big 12 Championship in 2003. Leckey was selected in the 2004 NFL Draft by Arizona and played seven years in the NFL, winning a Super Bowl with the New Orleans Saints.

Lockett was a Third Team All-America and first team all-conference honoree in both 1995 and 1996. A semifinalist for the Biletnikoff Award (nation's best wide receiver) in 1996, Lockett was named a First Team Academic All-American in both 1995 and 1996, while he was a four-time academic all-conference honoree. Following his playing days in Manhattan, Lockett was selected in the second round of the 1997 NFL Draft by Kansas City, playing seven years in the NFL.

Miller completed her playing career in the Little Apple in 1991 as K-State's all-time leading scorer with 1,705 points and currently ranks seventh, with 1,705 points. In 1990, Miller was named an Honorable Mention All-American, a Kodak all-district team selection and the 1990 co-Big Eight Player of the Year after averaging 17.3 points per game and 6.5 rebounds per game and leading the Wildcats to the NCAA Tournament. She earned All-Big 8 First Team honors in both 1990 and 1991. In 1991, she averaged 19.2 points per game and 6.1 rebounds per game. During her career, Miller scored in double figures in 88 of 114 games, with 28 20-plus point games. She started 113 consecutive games during career and ranks in the top 10 in 15-of-18 K-State career categories.

A four-year letterman (2007-11) for head coach Frank Martin, Pullen helped the Wildcats to 95 wins and four postseason appearances (3 NCAA Tournaments and 1 NIT) as well as the Elite Eight in 2010. The school's all-time leading scorer (2,132 points), he was the first three-time team captain. Pullen became the second Wildcat (joining Mike Evans) and the sixth Big 12 player to eclipse 2,000 career points. He earned All-America status twice in his distinguished playing career, first as a junior in 2010 and lastly as a senior in 2011. Pullen was a three-time All-Big 12 selection, including first team in 2010 and 2011, while he was twice named to the All-Defensive Team. He first won All-America honors as a third team selection from The Sporting News and an honorable mention pick from The Associated Press in 2010 after helping the Wildcats total a school-record 29 wins and their first trip to the Elite Eight in 22 seasons. He repeated his third-team honors as a senior in 2011 from the AP, National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC)/ State Farm, The Sporting News and Yahoo! Sports after guiding the Wildcats to a 23-win season and another NCAA Tournament appearance. Pullen became just the third player in school history to be selected as a John R. Wooden Award All-American. He captured the Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award, as the best player under 6-foot by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2011. Pullen averaged a team-best 20.2 points during his All-American senior season on 42.6 percent shooting, including 38.1 percent from 3-point range, with 3.7 assists, 2.9 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game. His 38 points against Wisconsin in the NCAA Southeast Regional Third Round on March 19, 2011, were the most by a Wildcat in a NCAA Tournament contest. He set the career scoring mark with his 38 vs. the Badgers. Pullen averaged a team-best 19.3 points during his All-American junior campaign with 3.4 assists, 2.6 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game. He registered 37 consecutive double-digit scoring games, which is the longest single-season streak and the second-longest in school history. Pullen's 110 3-point field goals tied Askia Jones for the most in a single season at K-State. He ranks in the Top 5 in 17 career categories at K-State and in the Top 10 in six career categories in Big 12 history. Pullen was the first Wildcat with at least 1,800 points, 400 assists, 300 rebounds and 200 steals. Following his time in Manhattan, Pullen has played professionally all over the world, including currently in Italy.

Sellers was a three-time NCAA high jump champion - 2007 outdoor (2.31m/7-7.25) and both indoor (2.24m/7-4.50) and outdoor (2.26m/7-5) in 2009. An overall eight-time NCAA All-American, Sellers reached the NCAA National Championships both indoor and outdoor his entire collegiate career. He was a two-time Big 12 Champion - 2007 outdoor (7-7.75) and 2008 indoor (7-6.00). He is currently No. 2 in both K-State indoor (2.29m/7-06.00) and outdoor (2.33m/7-07.75) high jump records. Sellers was awarded the USTFCCCA Field Scholar Athlete of the Year award in 2009 and named the Big 12 men's outdoor Performer of the Year in 2007 and indoor in 2008. He also earned multiple academic awards, including as a three-time Academic All-Big 12 selection.

Zschau was a two-time All-Big 12 First Team selection in volleyball (1997 &amp; 1998 - unanimous) who was invited to 1998 USA National Team Trials. She was a three-time Academic All-Big 12 honoree (1996 &amp; 1997 – first team; 1998 – second team). She is 1 of 4 players in school history with 1000+ kills and digs. She ranks third in career games played at K-State with 457. She is 1 of 2 players with three seasons of 300+ kills and digs (1996: 399k, 386d; 1997: 476k, 383d; 1998: 473k, 455d). Zschau ranks second with 4 career 20/20 double-doubles and owns the mark for the most double-doubles in school history with 69. She ranks fourth in school history in 20-kills matches with 16 and ranks fifth in school history for 20-dig matches with 11.  Kansas State Announces 2024 Athletics Hall of Fame Class

DENVER (AP) — Brenton Doyle broke an eighth-inning tie with a two-run double in the Colorado Rockies' 4-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Friday night.

Doyle finished with three hits, the tiebreaking double coming off reliever John Schreiber (3-3). Michael Toglia had a solo home run for Colorado that weathered a replay review.

“I knew the guy had a good sinker and sweeper, so I wanted to get something up in the zone,” Doyle said. “I took the first ball and was going to be pretty aggressive with the next pitch, just wanted it up in the zone, and I got it.”

The winning double was Doyle's seventh extra-base hit in his last four games, the most by a Colorado player in a four-game span since Charlie Blackmon also had seven from June 13-16, 2019. Doyle's batting average stands at .274, 71 points higher than his average at the end of last year, his first full season in the majors.

“When you’re producing, putting good swings on the baseball and finding barrels, you know this game can be a lot more fun and confidence can also raise with that. I’m in a good spot," said Doyle, who worked hard in the offseason fine-tuning his swing.

Salvador Perez had an RBI single and Freddy Fermin added three hits, including a single off Jalen Beeks leading off the ninth inning. Nick Loftin followed with a single before Beeks retired the next three batters for his eighth save. Victor Vodnik (2-1) worked a scoreless inning in relief for the victory.

The Royals went up 1-0 in the first inning when Bobby Witt Jr. doubled and scored an out later on a single by Perez.

Toglia connected on a 2-2 offering from Cole Ragans in the third inning, sending it the opposite way and just barely over the fence in left. Left fielder Dairon Blanco made a leaping attempt at the wall, his glove appearing to make glancing contact with the cupped hands of a fan who also tried to catch the ball. The ball dropped into the first row of the bleachers. The replay review upheld the home run call, ruling there was no conclusive evidence the spectator had interfered with Blanco in the field of play.

“I would have been pretty upset, like very upset actually,” Toglia said. “Because it’s not easy. But every one counts and I’m glad that one went my way.”

Ragans, though, had a replay review on a homer go against him for the second straight start. He also saw a home run call upheld in his last start against Cleveland when replay review could not determine whether a ball struck a metal support for netting before appearing to hit off the foul pole.

The mother of big league players Nathaniel and Josh is getting to watch her sons play against each other for the first time since being diagnosed with brain cancer last year. Wendy Lowe was unable to attend at Tampa Bay last October when Nathaniel Lowe and the Texas Rangers played against younger brother Josh and the Rays in an AL Wild Card playoff series. She was going through chemotherapy then. When the two teams met in Florida the first week this season, neither brother played because both were on the injured list.

Kansas Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2024 announced

WICHITA, Kan. – Former Fort Hays State standout women's basketball player and head coach Annette Wiles will be inducted into the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame on Sunday, October 13 in Topeka. Wiles is one of 12 individuals being inducted in the Class of 2024. She is already a member of the FHSU Tiger Sports Hall of Fame and the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Hall of Fame.

Wiles was a two-time NAIA All-America selection and the NAIA National Tournament MVP her senior year when she helped lead Fort Hays State to the 1991 NAIA Women's Basketball national title. Wiles is also the all-time leading scorer in Fort Hays State program history with 2,407 points and a scoring average of 20.4 points per game. She is the only player in the program's history to score 2,000 points in a career and only player with a career scoring average better than 16 points per game. Wiles still owns FHSU career records for the following categories – field goals made (993), field goals attempted (1,700), and field goal percentage (.584). She also owns the single-season records for points (880, 1990-91), scoring average (24.4 ppg), field goals made (358), field goals attempted (582), and rebounds (364).

Following her four-year playing career at Fort Hays State, Wiles went on to have a successful career as a women's collegiate basketball coach. She put together a career record 409-227 (.643). Her first head coaching position was at Bethany (Kan.) College (164-52 record) for seven years from 1994-2000 before leading her alma mater Fort Hays State (136-89 record) for eight years from 2000-2008. She moved on to become head coach for seven years at Minnesota Duluth (109-86 record) from 2008-2015. She was twice named Kansas Basketball Coaches Association Coach of the Year and twice named the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. She led three teams to NCAA Tournament appearances, which included Fort Hays State in 2005 and Minnesota Duluth in 2010 and 2012. She led Bethany College to four NAIA national tournament appearances. Following her time at Minnesota Duluth, Wiles returned to Kansas as athletic director at Topeka High School and then became the director of Hummer Sports Park in Topeka.

The 2024 Kansas Sports Hall of Fame class includes seven individuals who have ties to Olympic competition, including a gold medalist, paralympic medalist and the only American to be named a head track and field starter for two Olympic Games. The group also includes national champion coaches, collegiate champions and All-Americans, and American-record holders.

This year's class will bring the total number of inductees to 340, with the first class in 1961. Created by the Kansas State legislature in 1961, the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame has operated for 63 years and is located at the Wichita Boathouse.

The reception (5 p.m.), featuring appetizers and refreshments, and induction ceremony (6 p.m.) will be conducted in the Sunflower Ballroom of the Hotel Topeka City Center. The venue is located at 1717 Southwest Topeka Blvd., in Topeka.

"Topeka as the location for the induction makes sense for several reasons, but the fact that all of our inductees are either from, live or competed collegiately in the Manhattan-Topeka-Lawrence-Kansas City corridor creates an opportunity for more of their family and friends to attend," Kansas Sports Hall of Fame Chairman Jim Dunning said. Wichita Kan. (AP) - The Kansas Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2024 has been announced, with 12 new inductees.

The induction ceremony will be held at the Sunflower Ballroom in Hotel Topeka at City Center on Sunday, October 13th. The reception will be at 5:00 p.m., followed by the ceremony at 6:00 p.m.

- Hayden and KU alumni and long-time college basketball coach Mark Turgeon, who helped Hayden to two State basketball Championships, including a perfect 25-0 season in 1983. Was a part of four NCAA Tournament basketball teams with the Jayhawks.

- Current Hummer Sports Park director Annette Wiles. She is a two-time NAIA Basketball All-American and NAIA Tournament MVP with Fort Hays State, and long-time successful coach.

- Former KU football head coach Mark Mangino. Received several National Coach of the Year awards in 2007, as he led the Jayhawks to their only 12-win season and an Orange Bowl victory. Coached in Lawrence from 2002-2009.

- Former K-State All-American punter Sean Snyder. National Special Teams Coach of the Year at K-State, and joined KU football staff as a Special Assistant to the Head Coach for one season in 2023.

- Former Emporia State, Kansas, and Olympic baseball coach Dave Bingham. Led the Hornets with a 588-270-2 record over his 14 years there, and a National Championship win in 1978. He was named the National Coach of the Year in 1976, 1984, and 1986. He took over the Jayhawks’ program in 1988, and led them to a 249-225 record over eight years. He led them to their first College World Series appearance in 1993.

- Former Kansas City Chiefs offensive guard, NFL Hall of Famer, and Fort Riley native Will Shields. A third-round draft pick by Kansas City in 1993.

- Former K-State track and field star turned Olympian Erik Kynard. Won a gold medal in the high jump at the London Summer Olympics in 2012 at the age of 21. Is also a 10x U.S. National Champion.

- National Long Jump Champion Melvin Lister.

- U.S. Swimming record-holder Ron Neugent. Member of the 1980 U.S. Olympic team.

- Two-time Olympic Games head starter Kelly Rankin. The only American to do so.

- Former Jayhawk and Olympic Javelin thrower Scott Russell.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jonny DeLuca and Brandon Lowe homered, eight Rays players drove in runs, and Tampa Bay pounced on some erratic Kansas City pitching to squeak out a 10-8 victory over the Royals on Thursday night.

Zach Eflin (5-5), riding a 10-inning scoreless streak coming into the game, allowed six runs — five earned — and seven hits with a walk over five innings. That was still good enough to pick up his first win in his last five road starts.

“The offense was tremendous tonight,” Eflin said. “They carried us.”

Alec Marsh (6-6) allowed five runs and six hits with three walks in just three innings. The Kansas City bullpen fared no better as five relievers combined to allow five more runs, 10 hits and five walks.

“It was a game of adjustments and I wasn't able to make them,” Marsh said. “Feels like you're battling yourself out there.”

Michael Massey and Bobby Witt Jr. homered for the Royals, who trailed 9-4 before scoring three times in the sixth inning. The rally ended when Witt — representing the potential tying run — was thrown out trying to steal second.

Pete Fairbanks surrendered Witt's solo homer in the ninth before picking up his 14th save.

“They kept going, getting big hits after big hits,” Rays manager Kevin Cash said, “but it felt like when we really needed a play, we made it.”

Marsh struggled with his command from the start, walking Richie Palacios on four pitches and Isaac Paredes on a full-count to start the game — both eventually scored. DeLuca homered in the second and Palacios added an RBI single for a 4-0 lead.

The Royals got a run back on Massey's homer in the second. And after Tampa Bay restored a four-run lead on DeLuca's single in the third, Witt hit a sacrifice fly and Pasquantino an RBI single to get Kansas City to 5-3.

Carlos Hernandez didn't have much better command than Marsh for Kansas City. He walked the bases loaded to begin the fifth, and Taylor Walls and Ben Rortvedt made sure all three runners scored, extending the Tampa Bay lead.

The Rays hung on the rest of the way for their fifth straight series win.

“We got a lot of big hits. We had a lot of big at-bats, tough matchups,” said Cash, whose club has won 11 of its last 16 games to leave Kansas City above .500 at 43-42. “There were a lot of guys who contributed offensively.”

Massey played the field for the first time since May 24, when a lower back issue forced him onto the injured list. He had been limited to DH duties since returning to the club on June 24. ... Royals INF/OF Adam Frazier (right thumb strain) began what is expected to be a short rehab stint at Double-A Northwest Arkansas on Friday night.

The Rays have not announced a starter for Friday night's series-opener at Texas, though RHP Shane Baz is expected to get the ball in place of Aaron Civale, who was traded to the Brewers earlier this week. Baz missed last season after Tommy John surgery, but he's been dominant at Triple-A Durham, compiling a 1.57 ERA over his last five outings.

The Royals begin a nine-game trip leading into the All-Star break with the first of three in Colorado on Friday night. RHP Cole Ragans (5-6, 3.33) will try to bounce back from a shaky outing last Saturday against Cleveland.

Cameron Young also shot 59 at the Travelers Championship. Springer
will have to settle for a share of the course record at the TPC Deere
Run. Paul Goydos also shot 59 in the John Deere Classic in 2010.
Springer's was the eighth sub-60 round in golf worldwide this year.

Murray and his older brother, Jamie, have lost in the first round of
doubles at Wimbledon. Thursday's match at Centre Court was the first
step in Murray's farewell tour at the All England Club. The Murrays

said he will retire after playing at Wimbledon and the Paris

GENEVA (AP) — The
international swimming federation says its executive director has
been ordered to testify as a witness in a U.S. criminal investigation
into the case of 23 Chinese swimmers who tested positive for a banned
substance in 2021 yet were allowed to continue competing. World
Aquatics confirmed to The Associated Press that Brent Nowicki “was
served with a witness subpoena by the United States government.” In
May, a House Committee on China asked the Justice Department and the
FBI to launch an investigation under a federal law that allows
investigations into suspected doping conspiracies even if they
occurred outside the U.S. The swimmers were allowed to compete at the
previous Olympics in Tokyo despite testing positive for a banned
heart medication.

NEW YORK (AP) — Kansas stars Mario Chalmers and Sherron Collins are among 16 former men’s college basketball players who have sued the NCAA and multiple conferences, claiming they are profiting from the unauthorized use of their names, images and likenesses in promoting and monetizing the March Madness tournament.

Chalmers hit a 3-pointer with 2.1 seconds left to force overtime in the 2008 national championship game against Memphis on the way to the title. The lawsuit says the NCAA and Turner Sports Interactive – another defendant – have profited from replaying Chalmers’ shot without paying him.

The Big East, Pac-12, Big Ten, Big 12, SEC and ACC also are defendants in the class-action lawsuit, filed Monday in the U.S. District Court in the Southern District of New York.

“The NCAA has conspired with conferences, colleges, licensing companies, and apparel companies to fix the price of student-athlete labor near zero and make student-athletes unwitting and uncompensated lifetime pitchmen for the NCAA,” the lawsuit states.

The suit said March Madness generates close to $1 billion in annual revenue for the NCAA, but none has gone to the plaintiffs, who are seeking unspecified damages.

“The NCAA’s illegal conduct has damaged plaintiffs by diminishing their opportunity to maximize their compensation for their publicity rights, including their rights related to images related to the most profitable portion of NCAA’s revenue, basketball,” the suit says. “The full amount of this damage is currently unknown, and it continues to increase as the NCAA and its affiliates and co-conspirators continue to profit from the NCAA’s ongoing, uninterrupted usurpation of plaintiffs’ and class members publicity rights.”

An NCAA spokesperson declined comment Wednesday. The organization is already facing a number of federal lawsuits challenging its longstanding amateurism model and the case comes amidst dramatic changes that cleared the way for compensation of athletes.

A 2021 decision by the NCAA to allow athletes to earn endorsement money opened the door for millions of dollars in spending that has, among other things, changed how schools and donor-backed efforts target recruits. In May, the NCAA and the nation’s five biggest conferences agreed to pay nearly $2.8 billion to settle a host of antitrust claims, setting the stage for a revenue-sharing model that would send millions of dollars directly to athletes as soon as next year.

The Barton Community College Cougar Booster Club's 12th annual Cougar Open will take place Aug. 9, 2024 at Lake Barton Golf Club.

Signups for the four-person teams are being accepted for $125 per person, which includes golf cart and fees. The proceeds of the tournament benefit Barton student athletes. Hole sponsorships are available for individuals or businesses.

Announcements for the tournament begin at 9:45 a.m. with a shotgun start at 10 a.m.

The day will include a grab-and-go lunch, silent auction, hole prizes and a raffle.

Barton Cougar Booster Club golf tournament is Aug. 9

NEW YORK (AP) — Shohei Ohtani became the first player elected to start at designated hitter in four straight All-Star Games, joined by New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge as the only holdovers from last year in the lineups announced Wednesday for the July 16 game at Arlington, Texas.

Philadelphia could have three of the four National League infielders after fans voted shortstop Trea Turner and third baseman Alec Bohm to start alongside first baseman Bryce Harper, whose status is uncertain because of a leg injury.

Major League Baseball said this is the first time each league has had no more than one player repeat as an elected starter since fan balloting resumed in 1970.

Six teams have two starters each: Yankees outfielder Juan Soto was voted in alongside Judge, who gained his berth last week with Harper as the top vote-getters from each league in the first round of balloting. The second round was from Sunday until Wednesday.

Baltimore catcher Adley Rutschman and shortstop Gunnar Henderson were elected along with Houston second baseman Jose Altuve and DH Yordan Alvarez; Cleveland third baseman José Ramírez and outfielder Steven Kwan; San Diego outfielder Jurickson Profar and Fernando Tatis Jr.; and Milwaukee catcher William Contreras and outfielder Christian Yelich.

Toronto first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Arizona second baseman Ketel Marte also were voted in.

Philadelphia last had three elected infielders in 1982 with Pete Rose, Mike Schmidt and Manny Trillo. Harper went on the injured list on June 28 because of a strained left hamstring but could return ahead of the All-Star Game.

Tatis hasn’t played since June 21 because of a stress reaction in his right thigh bone and may be sidelined past the All-Star break.

Pitchers and reserves will be announced Sunday.

Ohtani is an All-Star for the fourth straight season but first since leaving the Los Angeles Angels for a record $700 million, 10-year contract with the Dodgers. He was an unprecedented two-way All-Star from 2021-23 but isn’t pitching this season while he recovers from reconstructive elbow surgery.

David Ortiz started at DH in three straight All-Star Games from 2011-13.

Altuve earned his ninth All-Star trip and sixth as a starter, Ramírez his sixth selection and third as a starter and Guerrero his fourth overall and third as a starter.

Alvarez, Bohm, Contreras, Henderson, Kwan, Profar, Rutschman and Soto are among eight first-time starters. Soto is making his fourth All-Star trip, his first for the AL.

“It means a lot. It’s a lot of hard work,” Soto said at Yankee Stadium. “Been grinding a lot. Finally got my first start, so it’s pretty cool.”

No players were elected to start from the host Rangers, who had four starters at last year’s game in Seattle: second baseman Marcus Semien, shortstop Corey Seager, third baseman Josh Jung, and catcher Jonah Heim.

Profar became an All-Star for the first time in his 11th big league season. He remained on the free-agent market until a week into spring training before agreeing to a $1 million, one-year deal with the Padres.

In the closest NL vote, Tatis (15.36%) edged the Dodgers’ Teoscar Hernández (15.26%) and the Phillies’ Brandon Marsh (14.73%) for the third outfield spot. Turner beat out injured Dodgers shortstop Mookie Betts 51-49%.

In the AL, Alvarez edged Baltimore’s Ryan O’Hearn 52-48% at DH and Kwan beat out the Orioles’ Anthony Santander 28-26% for the final outfield spot.

Ohtani elected to start at DH in 4th straight All-Star Game, joins Judge as only holdovers

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Michael Wacha allowed one run on two hits over six innings, Salvador Perez drove in a pair of runs and the Kansas City Royals got a spectacular defensive play from Kyle Isbel in the ninth to beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-2 on Wednesday night.

After reliever Chris Stratton gave up a run in the eighth, Royals closer James McArthur entered the game and got Jose Siri to fly out to right field and Richie Palacios to pop foul, leaving runners stranded on second and third.

McArthur came back for the ninth and gave up a leadoff single to Ben Rortvedt before striking out Yandy Diaz. Taylor Walls followed with a shot to deep center, where Isbel leaped up and slammed into the wall, barely hanging onto the catch as he hit the ground. McArthur then got Isaac Paredes to ground back to the pitcher to finish off his 15th save.

“I was kind of surprised I hung onto it. The wall is pretty hard out there," Isbel said. “I knew there was going to be a collision, but the game is on the line right there.”

Bobby Witt Jr. and Vinnie Pasquantino also drove in runs, pushing Kansas City to its AL-leading 31st home victory.

Wacha (5-6), who pitched for the Rays in 2021, walked three and struck out eight. The only run he allowed came on Paredes’ homer in the first, making it eight consecutive starts allowing two earned runs or fewer.

“He's really thrown the ball all season,” Rays manager Kevin Cash said. “We just couldn't get anything going. Mixed speeds really well, altered his delivery when we got guys on base. Slide-stepping and throwing timing off. Good performance.”

Ryan Pepiot (4-5) allowed two runs on four his over four innings for Tampa Bay. He struck out three.

After the series opener was delayed 2 1/2 hours by rain and finished after midnight, and Wednesday night's game started amid a drizzle, the clouds finally cleared off and a brilliant double rainbow appeared beyond the right-field wall at sunset.

Tampa Bay jumped ahead on Parades' two-out homer, but that was all the Rays could manage with Wacha on the mound. He left Amed Rosario on third in the second inning, stranded two in the third and worked around a leadoff double in the fourth.

The Royals took advantage of the opening, stringing together three hits in the third inning to take the lead. Isbel led off with a single, but it was Witt's double to left and Pasquantino's single moments later that pushed the runs across.

Kansas City still led 2-1 in the seventh when Shawn Armstrong walked Maikel Garcia and Witt. Perez stepped to the plate and got just enough barrel on the ball to bloop a single to right, scoring both of them and giving the Royals a cushion.

McArthur and Isbel made sure in the ninth that a two-run lead was enough.

“That was the most amazing catch I've seen,” McArthur said. “I knew (Isbel) had a chance on it because he's such a good outfielder, but that was just incredible.”

Tampa Bay traded RHP Aaron Civale to the NL Central-leading Brewers, who hope he can help a starting rotation decimated by injuries. The Rays received INF Gregory Barrios in the deal and assigned him to Class-A Bowling Green. Tampa Bay filled Civale's roster spot by recalling RHP Justin Sterner from Triple-A Durham.

Rays RHP Zach Eflin (4-5, 3.92 ERA) will start the season finale Thursday night. He is coming off six scoreless innings in a 3-1 win over Washington, his first victory since May 13. Royals RHP Alec Marsh (6-5, 4.19) gets the nod for the finale of a 10-game homestand.

Willson Contreras’ two-run homer in the eighth off Pittsburgh's Colin Holderman tied the score 3-3. Alec Burleson’ put St. Louis ahead with a 10th-inning sacrifice fly off Aroldis Chapman. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Christian Walker hit a go-ahead homer in the fourth inning and a three-run blast in the ninth — his 16th and 17th career shots at Dodger Stadium — and the Arizona Diamondbacks overcame a rough start to rout Los Angeles 12-4. Gabriel Moreno and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. added two-run homers for Arizona, down 4-1 before Diamondbacks starter Cristian Mena retired a batter in his major league debut. The filing says March Madness generates close to $1 billion in annual revenue for the NCAA, but none has gone to the plaintiffs.

Bat Cats Wednesday home game postponed

Great Bend High School's Kara Feist already has a decorated career as a multi-sport athlete at the school. Getting ready to enter her senior year, Feist recently announced her commitment to play volleyball at Fort Hays State University in 2025.

"I chose FHSU because I instantly fell in love with the campus, volleyball, and design programs," she said. "The team and coaches really make me feel at home when I am there."

As a junior last fall, Feist helped the Lady Panther volleyball team to a school-record 31 wins. Feist was a defensive force with a team-high 78 blocks. She finished second on the team with 216 kills and led the squad with a 48.4 percent kill rate. Her 37 ace serves were third on the team.

Feist has also been a standout for the Lady Panther track and field teams. As a freshman, she ran the final leg of the 4x400m relay team that won a Class 5A title and helped secure a second-place finish for the team in the final race of the season. She was also a state qualifier in the 400m dash that year. Last spring, Feist moved to the triple jump where she missed state qualification by six inches. She has also competed on the varsity basketball team. 

"Being a multi-sport athlete has pushed me to work hard in all aspects of athletics, as well as finding my love for volleyball," she said. "I can’t express how thankful I am to get this opportunity to continue to play the sport that has my heart, and I can’t wait to be an FHSU Tiger."

Feist plans to major in interior design and minor in graphic design while at FHSU.

Bryant and Dotson's selections to the Preseason All-Big 12 Defense team make Kansas the only program with two selections in the secondary. Bryant earns Preseason All-Big 12 honors for the second time in his career, while Dotson makes his first appearance on the preseason list.

From Evergreen, Alabama, Bryant enters his senior season as an All-Big 12 First Team selection in back-to-back seasons, becoming the first Kansas defensive back to earn first team honors in consecutive seasons since Aqib Talib in 2006-07. Bryant finished the 2023 season with 32 tackles, 4 interceptions and 9 pass breakups.

Opposite of Bryant, Dotson enters his senior season following a breakout junior campaign that included 48 tackles, 3.0 tackles-for-loss, 15 pass breakups and four interceptions. Dotson returned two of those interceptions for touchdowns (vs. Oklahoma, at Iowa State), becoming the first Jayhawk in school history with interceptions returned for touchdowns in back-to-back games.

The matchup will mark the 13th Wildcat Classic game at the T-Mobile Center with K-State winning 10 of the 12 previous Classics, including victories over Nebraska in 2022 and Wichita State last season. The Wildcat Classic dates to 2007 and has included such notable opponents as Alabama, Florida, Texas A&amp;M, UNLV and Vanderbilt.

This will be the 28th meeting between K-State and Drake with 26 of the last 27 matchups coming between 1918 and 1956. The Bulldogs won the most recent meeting, 80-70, at Bramlage Coliseum on Nov. 25, 2020.
