Life, as recent Hoisington High graduate Josiah Ball says, is about getting better for yourself and God.

“I am a person who would do anything to see a teammate or classmate succeed. I’m always there to assist and help others achieve their goals,” Ball said. “Every day, I strive to get at least 1% better as a person, athlete and man of God.”

That man of God will continue the sports excellence his older brothers established. He signed a track scholarship with Fort Hays State.

“Fort Hays is getting a good athlete and a great student. My approach to athletics is hard work and dedication,” Ball said. “Simple commitments such as showing up to practice, working hard while at practice, and taking care of the body and soul in the interim are some of my crucial elements to my success.”

Ball will take his pole vault talents to the next level. HE may possibly compete in the 110 and 60-meter hurdles.

“As a student, I am respectful in the classroom. I work hard to understand and comprehend the curriculum, and I am willing to take steps outside of the classroom to ensure my success,” Ball said. “I am also actively involved in my local church. I have gone on several mission trips and camps geared toward serving others and serving God. I understand that life is more than sports, education and entertainment. As such, I want to give back to others and build up my community.”

“He’s a really hard worker and is very consistent,” classmate Tony Moore said.

The Tigers are getting the latest Ball brother as the family that prays together, wins together.

“I am the youngest of five brothers, three of whom were college athletes at Fort Hays (I will be the fourth),” Ball said. “My oldest brother was particularly good at wrestling. He became a three-time All-American in college and broke the FHSU win-to-loss rate. My brothers were also grateful students, all doing very well in high school and college.”

Similarly, Josiah is a successful student with a 3.8 GPA and involvement in National Honor society, Scholars Bowl, vocal music, FBLA and the mental health club called Zero Reasons Why.

Ball won state in pole vault his junior and senior years and finished sixth his freshman season. He placed third in the 110 meter high hurdles the past two years and fourth his sophomore year. He added a fourth place finish in the 300 meter hurdles the past two seasons after qualifying for state the first two years.

His well-rounded contributions as a student carried over to his musical talents where he medaled for a solo at state vocal his senior year and went to state for a solo junior year. Ball took first at state wrestling his senior year, second as a junior and fifth as a freshman.

“Winning state this past year has been my lifelong goal,” said Ball, who was 23-1 at 138 pounds after a 30-5 mark as a junior at 132. “I started wrestling when I was three. And have been trying to keep up with my brothers ever since. I watched my brothers win numerous state titles, learning what I needed to do if I wanted to reach my goal of winning one for myself.”

That goal that was spurred from watching oldest brother Brandon compete with some of the best wrestlers in the nation.

“My brother took fourth at nationals, not quite reaching the big goal of being a national champion,” Josiah said. “I saw him come back from competing to instantly training for his senior year in college to reach his big goal. That year was covid, he was ranked #1 in the nation for D2 and they canceled nationals on him and countless other wrestlers. I learned that day that it’s hard to get a second chance.”

Pole vault is his favorite sport and will be the one he’s focused at Hays.

“It's an event like no other. I get to fly in the air, experiencing one of the best thrills anyone could ever dream of,” Josiah said. “I also get the opportunity to learn hundreds of life lessons. Some of which include being patient, understanding that you're never going to be perfect but that you can get back up and try again and again. Always knowing in the back of your head that you could get seriously hurt if you don't keep a focused mind. In many ways, I feel like this sport has provided me with a strong outlook on life. This outlook will help me continue my career as an athlete, work hard as a student, and reach others with the gospel.”

His gold medal vaults at state have been 14 feet (junior) and 15 feet (senior). His career best leap is 15-7 1/2.

“When I won pole vault for my second time jumping 15ft to capture state, it became another blessing God gave me,” Josiah said.

Track, Josiah said, is important to him in two different ways.&nbsp;

“First, it allows me to continue the goals I set for myself when I was younger. This occurred when I saw my oldest brother, Brandon Ball, win state four times in wrestling and once in pole vault and then continue his career, still being incredibly successful in college,” Josiah said. “Second, it's going to allow me to have an outreach to others so I can share the gospel with them. I believe God has provided this platform for me so I can point others toward Him, so I am very mindful of how I conduct myself in public and private.”

“I see how far he has come and how he continues to live up to the expectations put in place by his 4 older brothers,” Cardinal teammate Ethan Grubb said. “I’m just proud to say I know him and his family is some of the nicest people I have ever met.”

“I participated in track, cross country and wrestling with Josiah, and through all three of them he was a leader,” teammate Eli Lewis said. “He naturally leads people to become the best they can be in a sport, whether it benefits him personally or not. A big part of his leadership comes from his faith, which he puts second to nothing. Pointing people towards athletic excellence and toward God are the two biggest things that impressed me about Josiah's athletic career that I saw.”

Josiah fielded offers in all divisions, including schools from California, Missouri, Iowa, New Mexico and South Dakota.&nbsp;

“I wasn't very proactive in my search for colleges because I knew what I was looking for,” he said. “FHSU effectively offered all the things I cared about. I have had three of my four older brothers pursue sports in college and they all chose Fort Hays. I chose Fort Hays&nbsp;because it's close to home, affordable and the environment is awesome.&nbsp;I feel like it will give me great opportunities in the workplace, provide an avenue to get an affordable education, and all for plenty positive interactions with family and friends.”

It also continues what his brothers started in their Tiger careers.

“To me, it gives me the opportunity to try and keep up with my older brothers' accomplishments and continue the name on the back of our shirts in college,” Josiah said. “Also, this is another platform for me to speak the truth of Christ's life to others.”

“Josiah is a born leader and has a work ethic that is unmatched by anyone I’ve met,” Wichita State vaulter Shellamae Farmer said. “He’s done an outstanding job leading this team and being a role model for the younger athletes on our team. Josiah has been my training partner since the beginning and has been one of my biggest supporters and inspirations.”

How does he want to be remembered at Hoisington?

“The last of the Ball’s, also some of Coach Schmidt's work. As well as the accomplishments we had as a family and individually,” Josiah said. “I also want to be remembered as a good teammate, truthful friend, someone respectable, hardworking, and accomplished, serving and loving others.”

Hoisington's Ball looks to soar high for FHSU

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Kansas football head coach Lance Leipold, quarterback Jalon Daniels, running back Devin Neal, cornerback Mello Dotson and defensive end Jereme Robinson will preview the 2024 football season at Big 12 Big 12 Media Days at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 10.

Big 12 Media Days is a two-day event, beginning on Tuesday, July 9 with portions streaming live on ESPN+ and televised on ESPNU. Kansas will participate in Big 12 Media Days on Wednesday, July 10, along with Arizona, Baylor, BYU, Colorado, Houston, UCF and West Virginia.

Arizona State, Cincinnati, Iowa State, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, TCU, Texas Tech and Utah will take the state on July 9.

Royals host the Rays to begin 3-game series

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Gregg Berhalter gave a single-word answer after the United States was eliminated from the Copa America with a loss to Uruguay when asked whether he was the right man to lead the Americans into the 2026 World Cup.

Plenty of others are sure to have plenty more to say about his future with the national team.

After a disastrous loss to Panama put the U.S. in a dire predicament, Berhalter's lineup of players from European clubs created precious few opportunities against Uruguay. And when Mathías Olivera found the back of the net for a questionable second-half goal, La Celeste walked out of Arrowhead Stadium with a 1-0 victory on Monday night and the Americans were left wondering how everything had gone so wrong.

“We're all going to do a review of the whole tournament and see where we fell short,” Berhalter said. “It's obvious the Panama game hurt us, put us behind the 8-ball, and I think collectively — the staff, the players, the sporting department — have to look at where do we improve. How do we get better? We know it's a talented team, one with big potential, and we didn't show it.”

Berhalter and the U.S. hoped to show the team had advanced since its round-of-16 elimination against the Netherlands at the 2022 World Cup. Instead, the U.S. managed only a 2-0 win over lowly Bolivia and were upset 2-1 by the Panamanians.

“We had a good start and brought a lot of energy but at the end of the day, just not enough quality,” U.S. captain Christian Pulisic said. “I felt like we gave it everything but we just couldn’t score.”

Indeed, the lone goal Monday night came in the 66th minute when Nicolas De La Cruz swung a free kick in front of the American goal. Matt Turner parried a header by Ronald Araújo, who out-jumped defender Tim Ream, but the rebound went right to Olivera and he tapped the ball in with his left foot.

Olivera appeared to be offside on the initial header but the goal stood after a video review.

Three minutes before Uruguay scored, the U.S. was in position to advance.

Bruno Miranda had tied the score for Bolivia against Panama in a game started simultaneously in Orlando, Florida, which meant the U.S. would only need a tie. But Panama went on to a 3-1 victory to claim the second spot in Group C behind Uruguay, and the U.S. was bounced from the group stage for the first time in 20 continental and global tournaments on home soil.

“This is still a young team. Still a lot of potential. But potential doesn't really matter if you go out on the pitch and you don't get the job done,” defender Antonee Robinson said. “Everyone needs to try and up the level, myself included.”

Berhalter was rehired in June 2023 and given a contract through the upcoming World Cup, which the U.S. will co-host with Canada and Mexico. But despite a lineup that included Pulisic, Weston McKennie and Tyler Adams, the U.S. failed to even match its last Copa America appearance, when it lost to Argentina in the 2016 semifinals.

During the second half Monday night, the home crowd of 55,460 in less-than-full Arrowhead Stadium began chanting, “Fire Gregg.”

The U.S. next plays September friendlies against Canada and New Zealand.

“It wasn't only Copa America. It's learning from these high-level games we're playing pre-tournament,” Berhalter said, “and having this collective understanding that the margins are so small, and there is very little separating any of these teams.”

Uruguay played without coach Marcelo Bielsa, suspended for sending his team out late for the second half of its first two games. Diego Reyes and Pablo Quiroga were in charge on a mild but humid night in Kansas City.

Berhalter and the Americans knew the difficulty of their situation — Pulisic at one point said they would need to play “the best game of our lives” to advance — and they looked like a team with nothing to lose for most of the first half.

It was one marked by physical play and questionable calls.

Folarin Balogun, who had two goals already in the tournament, bore the brunt of several challenges. He was left calling for help after a collision with Uruguayan goalkeeper Sergio Rochet, then was left rolling on the field after Araújo’s challenge later in the half. Balogun eventually had to leave with a hip pointer and Ricardo Pepi took his place.

Uruguay lost Maximiliano Araújo earlier in the half after a scary collision with Ream near the U.S. goal. He had to be taken off the field on a stretcher, though he was able to move his arms before heading up the tunnel.

In the middle of the chaos was 32-year-old Peruvian referee Kevin Ortega, whose several questionable calls hurt the U.S.

The first came when Ortega began to pull a yellow card and stop play, then allowed it to continue — while still holding the card — as Uruguay nearly scored on an attack. The second came when the U.S. had a clear advantage after a hand ball on Uruguay, but the Peruvian referee eventually blew his whistle and called the play back for a free kick.

“This referee was awful,” Robinson said. “I've never seen a referee, you know, let a quick free kick go while he's got a yellow card in his hand. And it's literally embarrassing. And I hope something happens to him from that.”

Uruguay applied more pressure midway through the second half, then had the Americans in desperation mode after the goal. And while the U.S. had a few good runs and a couple of good opportunities in the box, a team that had such big expectations was unable to find the two goals it needed — or even one.

(AP) — Gregg Berhalter gave a single-word answer after the United States was eliminated from the Copa America with a loss to Uruguay when asked whether he was the right man to lead the Americans into the 2026 World Cup.“Yes,” Berhalter said.Plenty of others are sure to have plenty more to say about his future with the national team.After a disastrous loss to Panama put the U.S. in a dire predicament, Berhalter's lineup of players from European clubs created precious few opportunities against Uruguay. And when Mathías Olivera found the back of the net for a questionable second-half goal, La Celeste walked out of Arrowhead Stadium with a 1-0 victory on Monday night and the Americans were left wondering how everything had gone so wrong.“We're all going to do a review of the whole tournament and see where we fell short,” Berhalter said. “It's obvious the Panama game hurt us, put us behind the 8-ball, and I think collectively — the staff, the players, the sporting department — have to look at where do we improve. How do we get better? We know it's a talented team, one with big potential, and we didn't show it.”Berhalter and the U.S. hoped to show the team had advanced since its round-of-16 elimination against the Netherlands at the 2022 World Cup. Instead, the U.S. managed only a 2-0 win over lowly Bolivia and were upset 2-1 by the Panamanians.“We had a good start and brought a lot of energy but at the end of the day, just not enough quality,” U.S. captain Christian Pulisic said. “I felt like we gave it everything but we just couldn’t score.”Indeed, the lone goal Monday night came in the 66th minute when Nicolas De La Cruz swung a free kick in front of the American goal. Matt Turner parried a header by Ronald Araújo, who out-jumped defender Tim Ream, but the rebound went right to Olivera and he tapped the ball in with his left foot.Olivera appeared to be offside on the initial header but the goal stood after a video review.Three minutes before Uruguay scored, the U.S. was in position to advance.Bruno Miranda had tied the score for Bolivia against Panama in a game started simultaneously in Orlando, Florida, which meant the U.S. would only need a tie. But Panama went on to a 3-1 victory to claim the second spot in Group C behind Uruguay, and the U.S. was bounced from the group stage for the first time in 20 continental and global tournaments on home soil.“This is still a young team. Still a lot of potential. But potential doesn't really matter if you go out on the pitch and you don't get the job done,” defender Antonee Robinson said. “Everyone needs to try and up the level, myself included.”Berhalter was rehired in June 2023 and given a contract through the upcoming World Cup, which the U.S. will co-host with Canada and Mexico. But despite a lineup that included Pulisic, Weston McKennie and Tyler Adams, the U.S. failed to even match its last Copa America appearance, when it lost to Argentina in the 2016 semifinals.During the second half Monday night, the home crowd of 55,460 in less-than-full Arrowhead Stadium began chanting, “Fire Gregg.”The U.S. next plays September friendlies against Canada and New Zealand.“It wasn't only Copa America. It's learning from these high-level games we're playing pre-tournament,” Berhalter said, “and having this collective understanding that the margins are so small, and there is very little separating any of these teams.”Uruguay played without coach Marcelo Bielsa, suspended for sending his team out late for the second half of its first two games. Diego Reyes and Pablo Quiroga were in charge on a mild but humid night in Kansas City.Berhalter and the Americans knew the difficulty of their situation — Pulisic at one point said they would need to play “the best game of our lives” to advance — and they looked like a team with nothing to lose for most of the first half.It was one marked by physical play and questionable calls.Folarin Balogun, who had two goals already in the tournament, bore the brunt of several challenges. He was left calling for help after a collision with Uruguayan goalkeeper Sergio Rochet, then was left rolling on the field after Araújo’s challenge later in the half. Balogun eventually had to leave with a hip pointer and Ricardo Pepi took his place.Uruguay lost Maximiliano Araújo earlier in the half after a scary collision with Ream near the U.S. goal. He had to be taken off the field on a stretcher, though he was able to move his arms before heading up the tunnel.In the middle of the chaos was 32-year-old Peruvian referee Kevin Ortega, whose several questionable calls hurt the U.S.The first came when Ortega began to pull a yellow card and stop play, then allowed it to continue — while still holding the card — as Uruguay nearly scored on an attack. The second came when the U.S. had a clear advantage after a hand ball on Uruguay, but the Peruvian referee eventually blew his whistle and called the play back for a free kick.“This referee was awful,” Robinson said. “I've never seen a referee, you know, let a quick free kick go while he's got a yellow card in his hand. And it's literally embarrassing. And I hope something happens to him from that.”Uruguay applied more pressure midway through the second half, then had the Americans in desperation mode after the goal. And while the U.S. had a few good runs and a couple of good opportunities in the box, a team that had such big expectations was unable to find the two goals it needed — or even one.

US eliminated from Copa America with 1-0 loss to Uruguay

A few things usually have to happen to make the U.S. track and field team for the Olympic games. Athletes must hit a standard to qualify for the U.S. team trials, which were held at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field through Sunday. Athletes must finish in the top three of their event to make the U.S. Olympic team. To actually compete in Paris later this summer, athletes must also meet an Olympic standard. The latter will cost Sterling's Tyus Wilson the opportunity to compete in Paris. According to <a href="https://www.sportingnews.com/us/olympics/news/usa-olympic-track-and-field-team-2024-roster-paris/a282be8d34b1ff9d3210b39e">Sporting News</a>, the U.S. will take just two high jumpers to France, including JuVaughn Harrison, the fourth-place finisher at the trials.

Wilson, a three-time state champion while at Sterling High School, surpassed the U.S. trials "A" Standard of 2.23m at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa on April 26. He again cleared 7 feet, 5 inches (2.26m) at the Shocker Open in Wichita on May 3. He went even higher to 7-6 (2.29m) to win the Big 10 championship in Michigan on May 12. Wilson cleared 2.23m to finish second at the NCAA National Championships in Oregon on June 7. Entering the trials in Oregon, however, he was still just shy of the Olympic "A" standard of 2.33m (7-7.75).

Just two American high jumpers had met the Olympic standard heading into Thursday's first round in Oregon. With a miss at 7-2.25 (2.19m), Wilson still made the finals alongside fellow Kansas-native Devin Loudermilk, a former West Elk standout now competing at the University of Kansas.

During Sunday's Olympic trial finals, Wilson was perfect on three attempts through 2.24m. He missed three tries at 2.27m (7-5.25). Arkansas-Pine Bluff's Caleb Snowden set a personal best by clearing 2.27m on his final attempt to move past Wilson into second. Shelby McEwen, already with the Olympic standard, was perfect through 7-6.5, passed at 7-7.5, and missed three attempts at 7-8.75. Harrison, the only other jumper with the Olympic standard, missed his first attempt at 2.24m to finish fourth behind Wilson.

Because only one of the top three finishers Sunday had the Olympic standard, the conversation turned to world rankings. There were 33 high jumpers in the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Wilson is currently ranked No. 49 in the world.&nbsp;

The move to include Harrison on the U.S. Olympic team is a slight departure from what track fans saw with an earlier race. On June 21, reigning Olympic champion Athing Mu posted a 2.01.73 in the women's 800m race to qualify for the trial semifinals. She ran a 1:58.84 to win her semifinal heat on Sunday. She tripped in Monday's finale to place ninth in 2:19.69. Despite an appeal, she was excluded from this year's U.S. Olympic team. She is ranked No. 8 in the world.

TBT Bracket, Matchups Revealed for 2024 Wichita Regional

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Seth Lugo struck out 10 in six shutout innings to earn his major league-high 11th win, and Salvador Perez hit a two-run homer as the Kansas City Royals beat the Cleveland Guardians 6-2 on Sunday.

Bobby Witt Jr. had a run-scoring triple among his three hits for the Royals, who took three of four from the AL Central leaders. Vinnie Pasquantino also had three hits and an RBI.

Lugo (11-2) allowed four hits and one walk in his third straight start with eight or more strikeouts. It was his third double-digit strikeout game of the season.

“I thought it went pretty well,” Lugo said. “I was able to keep them off balance. ... Was able to stay focused and make the right pitches."

Perez had an RBI groundout in the first inning and added a two-run shot to left field that made it 6-0 in the seventh. He leads the Royals with 14 home runs.

“We need to do that kind of offense regularly against every type of team,” Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro said. “To get the early lead was nice and the two in the middle innings was nice, but the Perez home run was huge to expand the lead there."

Logan Allen (8-4) lasted 4 1/3 innings for the Guardians, giving up three runs and six hits with three strikeouts.

“I thought Allen battled today,” Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said. “Early in the game he was getting in tough counts, but he made pitches when he needed to and gave us a chance.”

Witt had his ninth three-hit game of the season. This one came after he went 0 for 4 on Saturday, which snapped a 23-game home hitting streak.

Garrett Hampson doubled home an early run for the Royals. Pasquantino finished the series with six RBIs.

Jose Ramírez put Cleveland on the board with a two-out RBI double in the eighth. That tied him with Hall of Fame slugger Jim Thome for third in franchise history with 620 extra-base hits. Josh Naylor followed with an RBI single.

Bo Naylor had three hits for the Guardians, who finished 14-11 in June.

Kansas City went 12-15 in June, its first losing month this season. But it was the most wins in June for the club since racking up 17 in 2017.

Cleveland activated RHP Gavin Williams from the 60-day injured list and optioned struggling RHP Triston McKenzie to Triple-A Columbus. RHP Darren McCaughan was designated for assignment.

“It was a tough day for all of us,” Vogt said. “We love Triston. We need him here; we want him to be here. He is ready to go down, put his head down and work.”

Guardians: Carlos Carrasco (3-6, 5.27 ERA) pitches Tuesday at home against the Chicago White Sox.

HAYS, Kan. - The 15th annual Tiger Auction and Dinner will take place on Saturday, August 17, 2024 in the Schmidt-Bickle Indoor Training Facility on the campus of Fort Hays State University. Item #40 this year will be focused on the Lewis Field turf project which will begin following the 2024 Tiger football season. The project will include replacing the "shock pad" and playing surface at Lewis Field which was installed in 2013 and removing the existing track surface and covering it with a new surface.

The shock pad is an elastic layer placed under the turf which increases shock absorption thus providing numerous benefits including safety issues and limiting concussions, field drainage, and increasing the longevity of the turf.

This project was specifically targeted to begin after the 2024 season to make sure all dirt work and early building construction on the Bickle-Schmidt Athletic Complex was complete to make it feasible for both crews to work on their respective projects side by side and to protect a brand new turf from the dirt and debris of the new complex construction.

The total project cost is estimated to be around $1 million. Donors at the $250 level or higher will be recognized in football and basketball programs throughout the year.

This is one of the biggest annual events for the FHSU Athletic Department, which raised $353,360 at the 14th annual event in 2023.

This will be the seventh Tiger Auction and Dinner hosted inside the Schmidt-Bickle Indoor Training Facility, which has served as the venue for the event since 2017. The move to the large, spacious facility was a necessity due to this very popular event selling out year after year when held at the Memorial Union Ballroom in its early years. The move has allowed many more Tiger supporters to attend.

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Departing senior guard Tylor Perry has realized his dreams of a professional basketball career with the signing of an Exhibition-10 deal with the Toronto Raptors on Thursday night (June 27).

Perry will be apart of the Raptors' Summer League team, which play in the NBA 2K25 Summer League in Las Vegas from July 12-22. Toronto is scheduled to play 4 games, starting Saturday, July 13 vs. the Oklahoma City Thunder and continuing Sunday, July 14 vs. the Denver Nuggets, Wednesday, July 17 vs. the Utah Jazz and Friday, July 19 vs. the Miami Heat. The championship rounds run Saturday-Monday, July 20-22.

A 5-foot-11, 180-pound guard from Fort Coffee, Okla., Perry spent one season at K-State, earning All-Big 12 Honorable Mention honors after leading the Wildcats in several categories, including scoring (519), 3-point field goals made (93), free throws (160), assists (148) and minutes (2,238), while starting all 34 games. He scored in double figures in a team-best 24 games with 11 20-point performances. For the season, he averaged a team-best 15.3 points, 3.0 rebounds and 4.4 assists in 36.4 minutes per game.

Perry scored nearly 2,500 points during his college career (2,490 points), which included stints at Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College (2019-21), North Texas (2021-23) and K-State (2023-24). Perry Signs Exhibit-10 Deal with Toronto Raptors

By Post Sports EMPORIA – The East team ended a six year losing streak to the West by winning the 51st annual Kansas Shrine Bowl game 36-25 at Welch Stadium n Emporia Saturday night.

Clay Center graduate and Washburn University commit Brody Hayes won MVP for the West team. Blue Valley Southwest graduate Dylan Dunn, a BYU commit, won East MVP.

After trailing 3-0 early, the East scored the next 20 points to take a 20-3 lead at halftime. The West closed the gap in the second half to 11 thanks to a 9-yard touchdown pass from Liberal’s Brooks Kappelman  to Cheney’s Jackson Voth with 8:25 left in the third to make it 28-17. 

The East responded with with 23 seconds left in the third on a 7-yard pass from Blue Valley Southwest’s Dylan Dunn to Eudora’s Adrion Seals. McPherson’s Teegan Haines had a 15-yard touchdown pass from Kappelman with 8:34 left. The East team took a safety in the final minute wrap up the scoring.

The escalator’s malfunction resulted “in an increased downward speed." Other details were not immediately available. Saturday’s 5-3 loss ended the Brewers’ winning streak at five games.

(AP) — Noah Lyles kept his hopes for the sprint double at the Olympics alive Saturday night, coming from behind to win the 200 meters at the U.S. track trials in 19.53 seconds, the fastest time in the world this year. Lyles added the 200, his signature race and the distance at which he is a three-time world champion, to the 100 he won last weekend. It was no blowout, as Lyles had to race to the line to pass Kenny Bednarek with about 10 meters left and beat him by .06 seconds. Erriyon Knighton, racing for the first time this year at trials after being cleared after an investigation about eating drug-tainted meat, finished third and made his second Olympic team.

DETROIT (AP) — Akshay Bhatia and Aaron Rai each shot 4-under 68 on Saturday to reach 17 under through three rounds and share the lead for the second straight day at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Cam Davis and Cameron Young were a shot back at Detroit Golf Club. Sam Stevens and Erik van Rooyen were another stroke back. Amateur Luke Clanton, Min Woo Lee and Joel Dahmen were three shots behind the leaders, entering the final round Sunday. The round started a couple hours later than scheduled after more than an inch of rain soaked the course. The soggy conditions allowed players to lift, clean and place their golf balls in the fairways.

DENVER (AP) — The parade last June to honor the NBA champion Denver Nuggets was a day the city and 750,000 fans won’t soon forget. It also was a life-changing moment for police Sgt. Justin Dodge, the SWAT team supervisor who was providing security along the parade route when the fire truck carrying Jamal Murray, Nikola Jokic and the NBA trophy ran over his left ankle. Dodge was rushed to the hospital through the crowded streets while holding on to the side of an all-terrain vehicle. His life was saved, but doctors couldn’t save his leg, which was amputated inches below the knee. He is steadily recovering and recently returned to work. Dodge now makes it his mission to inspire others.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jose Ramirez homered, Josh Naylor had a pair of RBIs and the Cleveland Guardians beat the Kansas City Royals 7-2 on Saturday.

“It was really positive that we win with a chance to come back tomorrow, but we don’t pay too much attention to that,” Ramirez said about avoiding a four-game losing skid. “We’re going to win a lot of games in a row but also lose a lot of games in a row, but the important part is we compete.”

Vinnie Pasquantino hit his 10th homer of the season while Michael Massey belted his seventh into the right field bullpen to put the Royals ahead 2-1 in the second inning.

“Michael is a really good offensive player for us and today was a good day for him,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said.

Those two homers were the only runs Tanner Bibee (7-2) gave up over six innings. He allowed four hits and struck out three.

“I felt like I was banging my head against the wall really, because that's what those guys do,” Bibee said. “They put together good at bats and battle. Today was a figure it out day from the get go. I don't think I made many bad pitches, but they just put balls in play.”

The Guardians took a 3-2 lead after a two-run homer by Jhonkensy Noel. The play was challenged, but was upheld as a home run.

“I hit too hard to see, but in my mind I was like ‘please be fair’,” Noel said, who has two homers since being called up four games ago. “It's been great, around these great players, great teammates and we're just trying to win ballgames.”

Ramirez extended the lead with an RBI double in the fifth and his 23rd homer of the season in the seventh inning to make it 7-2.

Cole Ragans (5-6) went 4 2/3 innings and allowed five earned runs. He gave up six hits and struck out six.

“I feel like I didn't command stuff overall and fell behind a lot,” Ragans said. “We've all seen the replay (of the video reviewed home run), it was a really bad pitch right own the middle and can't do anything about it."

Prior to the game, Bo Jackson was inducted into the Royals Hall of Fame. He played for Kansas City for four seasons and was named the All-Star Game Most Valuable Player in 1989.

Cleveland activated RHP Eli Morgan from the 15-day Injured List, signed and placed LHP Matthew Boyd on the 15-day Injured List, optioned RHP Darren McCaughan to Triple-A Columbus and Designated for Assignment RHP Zak Kent.

Cleveland sends LHP Logan Allen (8-3, 5.72 ERA) to the mound against RHP Seth Lugo (10-2, 2.29) for Kansas City.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A University of Nebraska regent has proposed a way for lifelong Cornhusker fans to carry their support into the afterlife.

When Memorial Stadium undergoes its next renovation, Regent Barbara Weitz of Omaha suggested building a columbarium under the football field where departed fans can have their ashes inurned.

The idea might be dead on arrival. Her fellow regents laughed at the proposal at a recent meeting.

Weitz acknowledged she made her pitch light-heartedly but didn't think any proposal should be dismissed out of hand with the university facing a $58 million budget shortfall. The price for niches, where cremation urns are stored, could vary depending on location, with a spot under the 50-yard line or end zone sold at a premium. Revenue, she said, would go to academics.

“One thing I know best about Nebraska is how much the football team and the volleyball team mean,” Weitz said. “We really do love our sports teams and follow them everywhere. It’s part of being a Nebraskan. So why wouldn’t being buried under the field be a great way to be close to your team forever? So it was kind of a combination of needing money, talking about ways to get it and then kind of trying to say let’s use our imaginations.”

Fans wishing to scatter a loved one's ashes at their favorite team's stadium is not unheard of and there are columbariums and other fan memorials at soccer, rugby and horse racing venues in Europe. There are cemeteries and columbariums at Notre Dame, Texas A&amp;M and military academies that are unaffiliated with sports.

The passion of fans makes sports-themed columbariums a natural, said Colm Hannon, founder of an Ireland-based business that creates sports-themed fan memorials in Europe.

“I think many families realize the fan's spiritual home was the stadium,” Hannon said in an email. “It was the place they had the best memories. It's somewhere they would much rather go to remember their loved one than a graveyard that they spent little or no happy times in. If you want to be mourned, choose a graveyard. If you want to be celebrated, choose a sports ground.”

Real estate developer Whit Suber has been trying to get approval from University of South Carolina leaders to build an above-ground columbarium across the street from Williams-Brice Stadium, home of the football team. He came up with the idea in 2016, shortly after he bought land adjacent to a popular tailgating area. He called Weitz's idea brilliant.

Suber, a 1992 South Carolina graduate, said if he builds his columbarium, a portion of the proceeds would go to the athletic department or a collective that pays Gamecocks athletes for endorsement work. He said he already has a permit.

“I'm just trying not to build it in opposition of the university, and we're slowly breaking down that opposition,” Suber said.
