Great Bend High School's Class of '25 had yet to beat Hays on the gridiron. Other than a 28-27 loss at Hays last year, the Panthers were 0-4 and had been outscored 127-21 in the three meetings before 2023. All that changed Friday night at Memorial Field as Great Bend's defense dominated in a 21-0 win.

"It feels awesome for these seniors," said junior quarterback Daxton Minton, who threw for a touchdown and rushed for another. "These seniors haven't beat them in (four) years. It feels good to get them a win on Senior Night."

After netting just 26 yards on 15 attempts in the first two quarters, Great Bend piled up 174 yards on 17 carries in the second half. Minton busted free on runs of 12 and 22 yards to work the ball near midfield late in the third quarter. Junior Ian Premer took the next handoff 49 yards to give the Panthers a 14-0 lead with 1:30 to play in the third.

"We just made some adjustments on our blocking schemes and that helped a lot," Minton said. "Our tackles had a heck of a third and fourth quarter."

After forcing the sixth Indian punt of the night early in the fourth quarter, Great Bend needed just three plays before Minton found space on his own sideline and ran 63 yards to the house for the final points of the night with 10:08 remaining.

The Panther defense bent but did not break on two occasions. Late in the first half, Hays worked picked up a first down at the Great Bend 5-yard line. A dropped pass ultimately forced a fourth down when Premer used all six feet, six inches to break up a pass and force a turnover on downs. In the third quarter, Premer again used his length to block a 22-yard field goal attempt.

The Indians finished with just 236 yards of total offense on the night. Forty-one of those yards came on one run from junior Holden Lind, who finished with 121 yards on 22 carries.

"Our defense played I think the best game they've played all year," Minton said. "They locked them down."

Seven of the first eight possessions in the game ended in a punt. Hays senior Wyatt Kirkpatrick recovered a fumble on the third Panther drive. But the Panthers got a nice punt return from sophomore Cooper Ohnmacht midway through the second quarter. Facing fourth-and-20 a few plays later, Minton found Ohnmacht in the back of the end zone for a 25-yard strike to put Great Bend ahead 7-0 with 5:36 left in the first half.

Minton threw the ball just four times in the second half but finished with 100 yards and the touchdown on 9-of-16 passing. He netted minus three yards on eight carries in the first half but rushed for 104 yards on six attempts in the second half. Premer added 81 yards on seven carries on the night.

Great Bend moves to 7-0 on the season. Hays falls to 4-3 with losses to Derby and Manhattan, the top-two teams in Class 6A, and the Panthers.

Coming off a perfect 37-0 season that ended in the program’s first National Championship, Hutchinson Community College has been picked to defend their 2024 Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Division 1 Women’s Basketball regular season title following a vote of league coaches ahead of the 2024-25 season. &nbsp;

Securing 10 of 13 possible first-place votes to tally 165 total points, the Blue Dragons were picked no worse than third by any coach in the conference preseason poll as HCC finished 27 points ahead of second-place Dodge City Community College. The Conquistadors were picked to finish as KJCCC runners-up despite not earning a single first-place vote as DCCC edged out Barton Community College who rounds out the top three in the preseason standings with 131 total points and one first-place vote.

Following Barton is Garden City who earned 127 total points with one of the remaining two first-place votes as the Broncbusters were picked sixth or higher in 12 of the 13 ballots submitted to finish one point ahead of Butler Community College who was picked fifth with 126 total points. A sizeable point gap then saw Coffeyville picked sixth with 104 points to finish as the final team to eclipse the 100-point mark in the preseason poll followed by Seward County (99 points) and Cowley Community College who received 80 points the final first-place vote to round out the top eight.

Other teams in the preseason order of finish include Cloud County Community College in ninth (78 points) Colby in 10th (45 points), a tie for 11th between Independence and Pratt while Fort Hays Tech Northwest was picked 13th with 22 total points

In total, 18 games will take place involving league teams over the opening weekend of the season as teams will have the first two-plus weeks of the regular season to compete in non-conference matchups before seeing a 24-game KJCCC schedule kickoff on Wednesday, November 20th with four matchups between conference schools. &nbsp;

After wrapping up the regular season on Wednesday, March 5th, postseason play will begin on Saturday, March 8th with the top four teams in the final regular season standings receiving a first-round bye in the NJCAA Region 6 Tournament. Teams that finish fifth through eighth will host teams that finish ninth through 12th in the regular season standings with the winners moving on to face the four teams that received byes on Tuesday, March 11th before seeing action move to a neutral site for the semifinals and finals. Postseason volleyball begins Monday for area volleyball teams. As the No. 6 team in Class 3A and the No. 2 team in Class 2A, Hoisington and Ellinwood, respectively, will host regional tournaments on Monday. The top two teams from each regional will advance to substate play.

Class 3A action begins at 5 p.m. Monday at the Hoisington Activity Center. Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb met Wednesday with owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam, who told him they were moving forward with their intention to build the $2.4 billion facility and entertainment complex 12 miles south of downtown. The Haslams explored several possible sites and considered renovating their current home before deciding the move was their best option. They made the announcement amid a four-game losing streak and 1-5 record heading into&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/joe-burrow-browns-bengals-a51ec89e695984fb9b8663f38cc3da60">Sunday’s home game against Cincinnati</a>.

With the Guardians trailing 5-3 and one out from falling into a 3-0 series deficit, Lane Thomas doubled against Luke Weaver in the ninth and Noel tied the score.

Bo Naylor singled leading off 10th against Clay Holmes, Brayan Rocchio sacrificed and Naylor took third on a comebacker. Fry, who hit a Division Series-saving homer against Detroit, sent a 1-2 sinker into the left-field bleachers.

Fry was mobbed by his teammates, and the fans at Progressive Field erupted in cheers.

A fourth-consecutive Western Athletic Conference title. Another Coach of the Year honor for Lyles Lashley. And a second-place finish for the Panther boys. Thursday's cross country race in Hays proved to be a banner one for Great Bend High School runners. 

The fifth-ranked Lady Panthers dominated the field for a fourth-straight title, scoring just 22 points on the day. Dodge City finished second with 57 points, and Garden City was the only other team under 110 points with 69.

Garden City senior Cate Wiese ended Great Bend's run of individual titles as Addy Nicholson had won the last two WAC titles. Wiese cruised to Thursday's 4K title in 15:19.97. The Lady Panthers took the next four places and five of the next seven. 

Sophomore Teegan Guerra finished second overall in 15:37.32, followed by senior Marissa Boone in 16:08.49 for the bronze, and sophomore Bella Long in fourth in 16:11.98. Junior Sienna Smith ran fifth in 16:28.22, and sophomore Teah King capped team scoring in eighth in 16:58.91. Senior Kate Welcher finished 12 seconds behind her in 10th in 17:10.07, and freshman Samantha Negaard placed 12th in 17:15.84. Alyssa Prendergrast finished in 18:59.42, and Sydney James crossed in 19:52.28.

 The Garden City boys had seven of the top-10 finishers to dominate team standings with 18 points. Great Bend scored 64 points for second, followed by Dodge City with 68 points, and Hays with 110 points.

The Buffs had the top three finishers, led by senior Hayden Nemechek in 15:59 for the win by nine seconds. Panther junior Ismael Ramirez ran behind that group in 16:32.73 for fourth, seven seconds off bronze pace. Junior Tavon Stroup placed sixth in 16:38.24, and senior Diego Pasos ran 13th in 17:40.70. Sophomore Anthony Lawrence finished 20th in 18:00.82, and freshman Isaac Aldana rounded out team scoring in 25th in 18:25.22. Freshman Brogan Lashley placed 27th in 18:27.98, followed by freshman Noah Kaiser in 31st in 18:52.28, and sophomore Parker Coleman behind him in 18:53.41. Randy Weber crossed in 19:39.44, and Sullivan Luttrell finished in 19:59.44. Lennon Johnson finished in 20:44.84, Alexis Garcia finished in 21:16.95, and Monte Velasco finished in 21:36.17.

Having a pair of set victories slip through their fingers, the 5th ranked Barton Community College volleyball team dropped its Wednesday evening battle of national ranked teams as 8th ranked Colby Community College capitalized for a 3-1 victory (19-25, 27-25, 25-22, 26-24).

After taking the first set, Barton led by three late in the second and had set point twice only to have the Trojans rally and score the final three tallies to even the match. Colby gained separation late in the third to grab a 2-1 match lead but with Barton owning set point in what would be the decisive frame, the Trojans rallied again with the last three points pulling off their first victory on Barton's home court since 2018.

Snapping the Cougars' 10-match win streak, the result puts both teams atop the KJCCC standings at 10-1 with Barton slipping to 23-2 overall as Colby improves to 20-2.

Next up for the Cougars is another home match coming Saturday in a 6:00 p.m. first serve hosting Seward County Community College.

Five players reached double-digit kills on the evening,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wvball/2024-25/bios/reyes_phoebe_zp2h">Phoebe Reyes</a>' 18 leading Barton with&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wvball/2024-25/bios/nixon_kassidy_bbcx">Kassidy Nixon</a>&nbsp;recording her 9th double-double of the season behind 10 kills and 14 digs.

Colby's Karlotta Kattai led all players with a career high 21 kills with 12 digs for her 7th double-double, Celia Mboya recorded 19 kills, and Viola Giangreco added 15 kills.

Barton struck for over .360 in both the first and second sets, finishing at .243 while Colby stayed fairly consistent all night for a .253 overall attack.

RECAPAn early four-point run put the Cougars out front in the opener as a .360 attack kept Colby from drawing any closer than two the rest of the set.

The 14th tie of the second set was pivotal in not only the frame but perhaps had match implications. After Barton's initial set point was spoiled, the Cougars were again on the verge of taking the frame but a miscommunication on an attack resulted in the final tie leading the Trojans' 3-0 close out in tying the match.

A 6-0 run put the Trojans in the driver's seat at 9-5 to begin the third, Barton later closing to within 17-16 before Colby responded with three straight in going on to win by three as the Cougars hit for a night low .234 with seven attack errors.

Barton again struggled at .220 with six more attack errors in the fourth frame but did enough to keep in and have a chance to tie the match. Leading 13-9 with another four-point advantage at 14-10, Barton's lead turned into a one-point deficit behind a 4-0 run and 6-of-7 from the Trojans. With the deficit growing to 20-17, Barton clawed back with three straight for the tie, trading two-point runs with the Trojans before surging ahead behind another two-pack of points at 24-23. The third time of having set point on the night was not the charm for Barton, seeing the Trojans pull-off another comeback with the final three points clinching the match 26-24.

Thursday's Sports Headlines and Scores presented by Barton Community College

Megan Besecker of the Barton Community College volleyball team has been named to the 2024 Thirty Under 30 award list as announced by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).

Recognizing the top thirty coaches across all levels around the country under the age of 30, Besecker was just one of two NJCAA coaches to receive the award this year in being joined by Northeastern Junior College's Mackenzie Chrisman.

Leading the Cougars last season to its first KJCCC title since 2011, Besecker was named the KJCCC/Region 6 Coach of the Year and has the squad rolling again in her second season at the helm.

Now 23-1 overall and ranked No. 5 in the country, Besecker has the Cougars atop the standings at 10-0 setting up a key conference battle tonight at the Barton Gym hosting No. 8 Colby Community College in a 6:00 p.m. first serve.

Besecker built her initial campaign with a talented group of freshmen to compliment a limited number of returning starters. Picked 8th in the KJCCC's pre-season coaches poll, Besecker led the squad to a two-match cushion for the league title finishing at 13-3 after winning twelve straight including seven in straight sets. A Liberal, Kansas, native, Besecker played at Garden City Community College and Tougaloo College (MS), entering the coaching ranks as Head Coach at Liberal High School before moving up to the college ranks as an assistant at NCAA Division II Emporia State University.

The Big 12 hit the halfway point of this season with a pair of 6-0 teams, though neither ninth-ranked Iowa State or No. 13 BYU were considered preseason favorites in the expanded 16-team conference.

Iowa State’s Matt Campbell, in his ninth season, was picked as the Big 12’s top coach for the first half of the season in a vote by 10 Associated Press writers who cover the league released Tuesday. The Cyclones are 6-0 for the first time since 1938, with a defense that allows only 11 points and 285.3 total yards a game.

BYU (6-0, 3-0 Big 12) was selected as the most surprising team. The Cougars have already surpassed their overall and conference win totals from their Big 12 debut last season, which ended with a five-game losing streak.

Oklahoma State and Kansas, two of the teams picked above them, have both lost their first three conference games. League newcomer Utah (4-2, 1-2) just fell out of the Top 25 for the first time this season,

The Cyclones and Cougars, tied with Texas Tech (5-1, 3-0) atop the Big 12 standings, don’t play each other in the regular season. Iowa State does host Texas Tech on Nov. 2.

Shedeur Sanders, Colorado. The quarterback and son of coach Deion Sanders leads the Big 12 with 336.3 yards passing per game and 17 touchdowns. He has completed 172 of 237 passes (72.6%) for 2,371 yards with four interceptions for the Buffaloes in their first season back in the league.

In Colorado’s 31-28 home loss to No. 17 Kansas State, Sanders set a school record by completing 16 passes in a row. He finished 34 of 40 for 388 yards and three touchdowns, even after two-way standout Travis Hunter and three other receivers got hurt.

Nick Martin, Oklahoma State. After his 140 total tackles and 83 solo stops in 2023 were the most for any Big 12 player since 2018, the Cowboys linebacker was having another outstanding season before a knee injury in the fourth quarter against Kansas State on Sept. 28. He had 47 tackles (28 solo) and 7 1/2 tackles for loss in the first five games. Martin is second in the Big 12 with his 9.4 tackles per game, trailing teammate Trey Rucker (11.5).

Josiah Trotter, West Virginia. The linebacker didn’t play as a true freshman a year ago after a season-ending leg injury in spring practice. The son of former NFL All-Pro LB Jeremiah Trotter Sr. and brother of Philadephia Eagles LB Jeremiah Trotter Jr. is tied for sixth in the Big 12 with 46 total tackles. He has three 10-tackle games this season.

Brendan Sorsby, Cincinnati. The quarterback transfer from Indiana is third in the Big 12 and 13th nationally with 287 yards passing per game. Sorsby has completed 133 of 201 passes (66.2%) for 1,722 yards with 13 TDs and three interceptions for the Bearcats (4-2, 2-1). He had multiple TD passes five times as a redshirt freshman with the Hoosiers last year.

Cam Skattebo, Arizona State. The bulldozing and versatile running back is third in the Big 12 with 128.8 yards rushing per game, second with his eight TDs, and first with his 7.3 yards per carry. Skattebo last season also took snaps at quarterback, lined up as a receiver and even punted. He has back-to-back 150-yard rushing games since a 100-yard receiving game.

There was a tie between Kansas (1-5) and Oklahoma State (3-3).

The Jayhawks were coming off a 9-4 season when quarterback Jalon Daniels played only three games because of a back injury. With Daniels healthy, they went into this season in the Top 25, won their opener against an FCS team and have since lost five straight games, four by a touchdown or less.

Oklahoma State, the Big 12 runner-up twice in the past three seasons, has lost two league games at home. That includes a 24-point loss to West Virginia in their last game two weeks ago. Ollie Gordon II was the nation’s leading rusher last season, but has 158 yards combined in the Cowboys’ five games against FBS opponents.

Baylor coach Dave Aranda survived a 3-9 record last year, but might not be as fortunate this season. The Bears (2-4) are 11-20 since Aranda’s second season in 2021, when they set a school record with 12 wins after a Sugar Bowl victory. Aranda, LSU’s defensive coordinator for a national title before going to Baylor, took over defensive play-calling this year. The Bears are 0-3 in the Big 12, allowing more than 38 points a game in those games.

QB Cam Rising missed Utah’s final Pac-12 season after a major knee injury during the Rose Bowl on Jan. 2, 2023. The 25-year-old and seventh-year senior quarterback injured his hand in Week 2 this season, missed three games and now is out indefinitely with a lower leg injury. He is 34-of-66 passing (51.5%) for 555 yards and seven TDs along with three interceptions.

The Barton Community College women's golf team wrapped up its fall season on Tuesday with a 7th placing at the Newman Fall Invitational held at Andover's Terradyne Country Club.

Highlighting Barton's two days of competition was the hole-in-one by&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wgolf/2024-25/bios/nash_kadynce_s9uk">Kadynce Nash</a>, utilizing a 7-iron on the 161-yard, hole No. 12 in recording just the women's program second ever ace in competition. The accomplishment adds the freshman's name alongside Leeseo Park's ace, who was also a freshman at the time, coming on hole No. 8 at Hutchinson's Carey Park Golf Course during the first round of the 2016 Region 6 Championships.

Competing against its toughest field and course of the season to date, Barton carded rounds of 346 and 353 for a 131-over 699 accumulated score.

<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wgolf/2024-25/bios/crosby_alayna_19gf">Alayna Crosby</a>'s 94 and 96 rounds placed 37th at 48-over 190, one spot ahead of Nash in posting a 94 from her historic round but slipped in the standings with a final round 103 to compile a 55-over 197.

The Cougars now enter the long off-season in resuming competition play next March.

Nash records program second ever ace, Barton women's golf wraps up fall season 

The No. 9 Lady Panther volleyball team pushed its win streak to 21 matches with a pair of victories in Smith Center Tuesday night. Now 29-2 on the season, Great Bend is currently ahead of top-ranked Topeka-Seaman as the No. 1 seed in the Class 5A West substate standings. Three teams in the west have just two losses.

Perennially-tough Smith Center had posted a&nbsp; 122-13 record over the past three seasons, including a 43-win state championship season in 2021. The Lady Red have won just nine matches this year and dropped Tuesday's contest to Great Bend 25-17, 25-6.

Lady Panther freshman Mikala Minton had the big match offensively with eight kills. Senior Kara Feist added five, and the Ellegoods - senior Cassie and freshman Micah - each finished with four. Sophomore Kya Behr finished with 22 assists. The Lady Panther blockers had one of their best showings of the season. Feist led the charge with five, followed by Micah Ellegood with four and Cassie Ellegood with three. Junior Ava Kaiser led the back row with 11 digs followed by Minton with six.

Great Bend defeated Phillipsburg 25-18, 25-16. Sophomore Alex Mayers led the attack with nine kills, followed by Cassie Ellegood with seven and Behr with six. Behr also added 23 assists to her growing career total. Micah Ellegood had four blocks and Minton paced the back row with 10 digs. Mayers and Behr each added nine digs and Kaiser finished with seven.

The Lady Panthers head to the Western Athletic Conference tournament in Garden City on Saturday to wrap up the regular season.

Watson was suspended for the first 11 games in 2022 for violating the league’s personal conduct policy after more than two dozen women accused him of sexual assault and inappropriate conduct during massage therapy sessions. With 15 consecutive state tennis titles, including the past three in Class 3-2-1A, Wichita Collegiate is almost a lock to take home one of the three state plaques each October. Ellsworth High School tennis coach Eric Anderson knows that. His squad finished fourth at last year's state tournament, just two points shy of the third-place trophy. Anderson hopes an unprecedented show of success this fall leads to a state trophy in Wichita this weekend.

"We're kind of lucky," he said. "We had a young team last year with three freshmen, two sophomores, and a junior. All of them qualified for the state meet, five of those six placed at the state meet, and all six are back this year."

 The Lady Bearcats were 101-7 in combined matches this year heading into regional action Friday and Saturday in Wakeeney. The girls posted a combined 15-2 record there to bring home a pair of regional titles and qualify all six members to state. Ellsworth more than doubled-up second-place Hoisington 22-10.

One big move from last year was switching sophomore Hannah Vague to singles and junior Felis De La Cruz to doubles. Last year, Vague teamed up with senior Elena Jundt to place 11th at state as a doubles team. This year, Vague is 28-4 as a singles player and De La Cruz and Jundt are 27-4 on the doubles side.

"We talked in the offseason, over the summer, that we really wanted to work hard at getting all six of our girls to place at the state meet so we had a chance to bring home one of them state plaques," Anderson said. "Last year, we were two points short of bringing home a third-place plaque. They really came to me and said we needed to change things up a little bit and we ran with it."

The staples are also back. Junior Inarie Rippert and sophomore Reygan Coonrod finished second at state last year and take a perfect 31-0 record to Wichita this year. Sophomore Karli Haase placed 10th at state last year and takes a 30-1 record to state this year. Anderson said the program starts with a strong foundation.

"We added junior high tennis here, which has been a great feeder program for our girls' team," he said. "They go right from the spring, right through the summer program, right into girls' tennis. It's just been awesome the last few years to see our girls progress. We have some freshmen girls this year who, in previous years, probably could have made it to our varsity team."

This group of Lady Bearcats has won 17 of its 18 varsity tournaments dating back to last year, and the girls have now won 323 matches compared to just 49 losses over the past two seasons. This year's Class 3-2-1A State Tennis Championships begin Friday in Wichita.

Ellsworth tennis team continues unprecedented success heading back to state

ATLANTA (AP) — The Super Bowl will return to Atlanta in 2028 at the home of the Falcons, following a vote of approval by NFL team owners on Tuesday at the league’s annual fall meeting.

This will be the fourth time the NFL’s championship game is played in Atlanta and the second in Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which was the site when the New England Patriots beat the Los Angeles Rams in 2019.

“This is a tremendous honor for the city of Atlanta and the state of Georgia to be selected as host for Super Bowl LXII,” Falcons owner Arthur M. Blank said. “Thank you to my fellow owners for their trust in awarding Atlanta this opportunity, and thank you to Commissioner Goodell, Peter O’Reilly and the entire league for their continued leadership in making the NFL the greatest sports league in the world. Mercedes-Benz Stadium was built to host the world’s largest sporting events, and I know I speak for many when I say we are honored to bring it back to Atlanta in 2028 and build off the success of Super Bowl 53 in 2019. I look forward to working alongside our city and state officials as we continue to elevate Georgia as a premier, global sports destination.”

The first two Super Bowls held in Atlanta were at the now-demolished Georgia Dome in 1994 and 2000.

New Orleans will host the game following this season. It then goes to California for two years, with the San Francisco Bay Area hosting in 2026 and Los Angeles in 2027.
