Gary Lee Reeves, 76, passed away on Feb. 28, 2025, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kan., surrounded by his family. He was born on Feb. 23, 1949, in Great Bend, Kan., to Eugene and Martha (Gerritzen) Reeves. Gary married Ann (Gowdy) Dec. 4, 1971, at Ellinwood, Kan. She passed away on Oct. 15, 2022.

Gary, a Great Bend resident since 1972, was a long-time driller in the oilfield working for Red Tiger Drilling, L.D. Drilling and finally retiring from Duke Drilling in 1995 after many years of faithful service. He enjoyed tinkering on his vehicles, gardening, and cherished time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren, going on fishing adventures, and giving countless hours of mower rides. He was also known to sing clever songs with made up lyrics just to get a smile and chuckle. He proudly served his country in the 54th infantry division during Vietnam from 1970 to 1972, being discharged with the rank of Sargeant E5. Gary also displayed amazing strength as member of AA, celebrating 37 years of sobriety.

Survivors include three daughters, Marcy Reeves (Scottie Schmidt), Tracy Reeves and Bridgette Thomas (John); grandchildren, Trinity Reeves, Jourdel Reeves and JaLeea Reeves; one granddaughter of the heart Aeriana Trimmer; three Great grandchildren, Everhett Reeves, Hazelyn Reeves and Rebecca Reeves; and one sister: Donna Crawford of Sioux Falls, S.D.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ann; son, Eric Reeves; and grandson Tyler Reeves.

Memorial services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, 2025, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Pastor Dennis Morrison presiding. Inurnment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Great Bend, with military honors conducted by the Ft. Riley Honor Guard. Jerry Lee Jackson, 84, passed away on Feb. 27, 2025, at his home in Great Bend, Kan. He was born on Oct. 15, 1940, in Stockton, Kan., to Alfred "Jack" and Rosena (Hunter) Jackson. Jerry married Shirlee Ann (Hutton) on Aug. 6, 1961, in Stockton, Kan.

Jerry, a Great Bend businessman since 1969, co-owned and operated the Coast-to-Coast Hardware store, alongside Shirlee, from 1969 to 1987. Upon closing the store, both continued service to the residential and commercial lawn machinery community with the operation of H &amp; J Distributing until Jerry’s passing.

Jerry was a member of the Lake Barton Golf Club, where he enjoyed the fellowship of friends and volunteered as a groundskeeper. As an extension of his tireless passion for helping friends and neighbors, he could often be found snow blowing, mowing and doing repair work for those in need of an extra hand.

Jerry is survived by his wife Shirlee; three sons, Tony Jackson of Kansas City, Mo., Tracy Jackson and wife Lori of Dallas, Texas, and Terry Jackson of Kansas City, Mo.; two grandchildren, Hutton Jackson and wife Julianne and Luke Jackson and wife Nichole; and two great grandchildren, Callan Jackson and Kaden Jackson; two brothers, Jim Jackson of Stockton, Kan., and Ron Jackson of Clay Center, Kan.; and by one sister Ruth Ann Roy of Boulder, Colo. Jerry was preceded in passing by one brother, Marvin Jackson of Stockton.

Jerry Lee Jackson, age 84

Carl LeRoy Stoppel, 63, of Russell, Kansas, died on Saturday, February 15, 2025, at The University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas.

LeRoy was born on August 12, 1961, in Russell, Kansas, the son of Carl Alvin and Pearl Mae (Bushell) Stoppel. He grew up in Russell and graduated from Russell High School in the class of 1980. He worked in the oilfield industry as a Roustabout working for the last several years with Scheck Oil Company in Russell. He enjoyed riding his side by side motorcycle, shooting guns and sitting next to a fire pit drinking beer with his close friends. LeRoy was never married but found love the last year of his life with Sarah Waechter who helped care and love LeRoy while he battled his cancer diagnosis. One of his greatest treasurers in life was being part of the R Club. Having one final reunion with his “brothers” brought him so much pride and joy.

Surviving family includes his sister Patricia M. Demel of Kansas City, Missouri and significant other and girlfriend Sarah Waechter of Russell, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Ernest A. “Sonny” Stoppel, niece Melissa Demel and brother in-law Ray Demel.

LeRoy selected a cremation service, and a celebration of LeRoy’s life will be held at 10 A.M on Friday, April 11, 2025, at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, Kansas. Family will greet guest the day of the service from 9 A.M. to service time. Burial will follow at the Wilson City Cemetery in Wilson, Kansas. Memorials may be given to BFAC (Bras Fore A Cause) to help others in the community battle cancer or the R Club and can be sent to the mortuary. Carl Stoppel, age 63

Shirley Mae Henning, 89, died peacefully on February 24, 2025, at Vintage Park at Waterfront in Wichita, Kansas. She was born September 17, 1935, in Great Bend to Milton and Clara (Hayward) Koch. Shirley married William "Bill" F. Henning August 14, 1955, in Great Bend. He preceded her in death on September 6, 2015.

Shirley was a lifetime Great Bend resident. As a young mother, she was a stay-at-home mom who was active in her children’s activities and often the organizer. She was proud owner and operator of The Kitchen Cupboard from 1979 until 1989. Shirley was very involved with her church, First United Methodist, serving in whatever way she could. She loved to travel and had visited almost all 50 states over the course of a long series of camping adventures with her parents and cross-country road trips after retirement. Closer to home, she enjoyed making quilts and was a talented seamstress. She was a devoted grandmother who cherished spending time with her grandchildren, and she will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

Survivors include daughters, Holly Smith and her husband Lawrence of Wichita, Janne Rowe and her husband Greg of Wichita; grandchildren, Heather Feist (Evan), Shannon Pope (Mike), Evan Smith (Kate); great grandchildren, Brooklyn Feist, Cameron Feist, Hudson Pope, Kinsley Pope, Urban Smith, Josie Smith, and Russell Smith. She was preceded in death by her parents; granddaughter, Tess Smith; and brother, Bob Koch.

Shirley Mae Henning, age 89

Glenda Ruth Zimmerman, 72, passed away February 24, 2025, at Centerpoint Medical Center in Independence, Missouri. She was born January 8, 1953, in Great Bend, Kansas to Glen and Evelyn (Hulse) Tegarden.

Glenda attended Great Bend High School Class of 1971. She married Rodger Love and, from this union, had 3 children, Rick, Rodger Jr., and Shannon. She married Rick Zimmerman on October 27, 1994, in Las Vegas, Nevada. After 28 years of marriage, they renewed their vows June 24, 2022, with friends and family present, at St. Rose Catholic Church. She worked for Fuller Brush Industries in quality control for over 35 years until her retirement in 2017. Glenda was a Facebook enthusiast and loved staying in contact and keeping up with the latest events of her family. She enjoyed going to the Great Bend Rec Center and exercising with friends. Glenda enjoyed the days spent with her furry babies, Ollie and Haley. She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish and Altar Society at St. Rose Catholic Church. Above all else, she reveled in the time spent with family and her grandchildren, who will miss her dearly.

Jacquelyn “Jackie” Beth Monroe, 87, passed away February 13, 2025, at Ascension Via Christi St. Francis in Wichita, Kansas. She was born March 12, 1937, in Otis, Kan., to Jacob and Bonita (Brack) Brack. Jackie married Orville Monroe in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He preceded her in death on August 3, 2022.

Jackie spent her career in the Colby and Albuquerque school districts as a grade school teacher. After her marriage to Orville she moved to Great Bend, Kan. She was a cat lover who raised and spoiled many cats over the years. Jackie was an avid reader and loved to keep her mind sharp with crossword puzzles. When able, she grew and tended to a beautiful garden full of colorful flowers. She loved shopping – whether it was a day trip out of town or ordering over the phone from QVC. Above all else, Jackie loved spending time with her friends and family.

Survivors include her children, Melissa (Eulert) Dickson and husband Tim of Ellinwood, Colby Eulert of San Diego, Calif., Bret Eulert and wife Connie of Great Bend, Jenny (Monroe) Hejny and husband Daniel of McCamey, Tex., Eileen (Monroe) Wilkinson and husband Bobby of Denison, Tex., and her two furry children Harley and Phoebe; 8 grandchildren, Rachael Dickson, Jeremy Hejny (Shannon), J.D. Jacquelyn 'Jackie' Monroe, age 87

Barbara Lea (Reichel) Baus, 93, La Crosse, Kansas, passed away Saturday, February 15, 2025, at Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, Kansas.

Barbara was born on a farm northeast of Bison, Kansas, on September 19, 1931, the daughter of Henry and Esther (Foos) Reichel. Barbara always said she bounced into the world, as her mom worked in the field with a tractor that day.

Barbara grew up learning how to work. She and her brother, Caroll, were 14 months apart, therefore they learned how to work before they played. Caroll passed away in 1950.

Electricity, TV, radio, air conditioning, and fans were not part of their lives.

Her dad won a radio in 1935 when Humburgs had a drawing. Needless to say, they had their ears glued to the radio at night. Of course, the radio was battery run.

They also did not have an indoor bathroom, oh the wonderful feel of an outhouse! A wash tub in the wash house was their bathtub. The kids took a bath in the same water and only used it once a week. In the summertime their dad made a shower house with a barrel for water on top. The sun would heat the water, and the bath felt so good.

Barbara’s younger brother, Arnold Neal, came along in 1935.

Barbara remembers her dad using horses and a hay wagon to put up alfalfa and wheat straw. She couldn’t remember the tractor her mom worked with on the day she was born, but she does remember when her dad got a new McCormick Deering tractor. It had lug wheels and an iron seat that you didn’t sit on, because it jarred your body too much and you would have round holes imprinted on your behind.

Barbara had to feed the chickens, help milk cows, help separate the milk and carry 5-gallon buckets in each hand across the yard to slop the pigs. Barbara’s job was also to wash the separator. All of this had to be done before she and her brother walked ½ mile across the field to school.

Barbara went to Pleasant Valley District #53 school for seven years. When her brother, Caroll, went to high school, Barbara finished 8th grade at Bison Grade School, Bison, Kansas.

Barbara attended Bison High School, Bison, Kanas. In those “good old days”, girls wore dresses or skirts, boys wore casual pants, no jeans.

Barbara graduated in May, 1949. The night was dreary and rainy. The electricity had gone out, so they used barn lanterns for light.

Barbara played softball and basketball. No school had a girls basketball team, so the girls played B-team boys. Barbara always thought the girls had an edge, as the boys were afraid to touch them. All their games were played during school time. When Barbara was a junior, the boys played their games at night.

After graduating from high school, Barbara worked at the Ben Franklin Store in La Crosse, Kansas. She stayed at a home in town, where she had only one bedroom. It cost $5.00 a week. Barbara earned a little over $24.00 a week. She spent $1.00 a day for food and still put $10.00 away for savings. She worked from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Saturday.

Bill rolled into Barbara’s life one Saturday night. They met in the bowling alley. They dated for 3 ½ years, and were married on September 9, 1951, at the Methodist Church in Bison, Kansas.

Barbara moved to Bill's farm, northeast of Alexander, Kansas, where she continued to still do the chores she did before.

When Bill and Barbara were blessed with Janet in 1952, Debra in 1957, and Mark in 1960, it made for more planning to get everything done.

When Janet went to high school, Barbara started working in town. She worked at Galen’s Men’s Wear. Then in 1970, she started working at L &amp; W Implement &amp; car dealership as a secretary. Later she worked at the appraiser’s office in the courthouse for eight years. She served on the Farm Bureau Board for 17 years.

Bill and Barbara were sponsors for “The Up With People” sing out, America Young people from Rush County. She belonged to the EHU group at Alexander, Kansas, the Review Club, Sorority organization at McCracken, Kansas, and was on the Rush County Health Board &amp; Extension Board.

Bill and Barbara went to the Lutheran Church in La Crosse, Kansas, when it was moved from the country church northeast of Alexander, Kansas, in 1953. They were Luther League sponsors for young people, sang in the church choir, and were involved in the Women of the Church until they were no longer able to function. Barbara was a substitute organist for many years, then organist for 17 years until she retired in 2016. She also served on the church board nine years.

Barbara started baking wedding cakes in 1954 and made cakes and catered for 64 years.

Barbara made many quilts. One year she embroidered 13 sets of tea towels for her family. She also made many crochet afghans.

Barbara sang at many weddings and funerals until her vocal cords were damaged by coughing.

In 2010 Bill and Barbara moved to McCracken, Kansas, after she had a heart attack in 2009 and Bill lost his leg in 2007.

Bill passed away in 2018 and Barbara moved to La Crosse, Kansas, in 2019.

Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; her parents, Henry and Esther Reichel; and her brothers, Caroll and Arnold Neal.

Survivors include: two daughters, Janet Hayes (Ted), Wichita, Kansas, and Debra Schuckman (Myron), Wichita, Kansas; one son, Mark Baus (Ann), La Crosse, Kansas; 10 grandchildren, Celi Jensby (Matt), Chad Warner (Cissi), Cari Palesano (Jeremy), Casey Warner (Robin), Christopher Schuckman (Katie), Carissa Schuckman (Jordan), Caley Clinkscales (Daniel), Veronica Kimple (Daniel), Leah Johnson (Nick) and Olivia Baus; 21 great grand children and one great great grandchild.

Barbara made many friends from childhood to her time of death. She saw plenty of water over and under a bridge. She also remembers her great grandfather Schwindt and her great grandfather Krug.

All of her ancestors came from Germany via Ellis Island.

Visitation will be Friday, March 7, 2025, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, Kansas. A prayer service will be at 7:30 P.M.

Church visitation will be Saturday, March 8, 2025, from 9:00 A.M. to 9:50 A.M. at the First Lutheran Church, La Crosse, Kansas.

Funeral service will be Saturday, March 8, 2025, at 10:00 A.M. at the First Lutheran Church, La Crosse, Kansas, with Pastor Phyllis Burdge officiating.

Interment will be Saturday, March 8, 2025, at 2:00 P.M. in the Peace Lutheran Cemetery in the country, three miles northeast of Alexander, Kansas.

Barbara always said she bounced into the world, as her mom worked in the field with a tractor that day.Barbara grew up learning how to work. She and her brother, Caroll, were 14 months apart, therefore they learned how to work before they played. Caroll passed away in 1950.Electricity, TV, radio, air conditioning, and fans were not part of their lives.Her dad won a radio in 1935 when Humburgs had a drawing. Needless to say, they had their ears glued to the radio at night. Of course, the radio was battery run.They also did not have an indoor bathroom, oh the wonderful feel of an outhouse! A wash tub in the wash house was their bathtub. The kids took a bath in the same water and only used it once a week. In the summertime their dad made a shower house with a barrel for water on top. The sun would heat the water, and the bath felt so good.Each one of the kids had chores to do.Barbara’s younger brother, Arnold Neal, came along in 1935.Barbara remembers her dad using horses and a hay wagon to put up alfalfa and wheat straw. She couldn’t remember the tractor her mom worked with on the day she was born, but she does remember when her dad got a new McCormick Deering tractor. Michael Shane Moore, Jr., 34, passed away February 21, 2025, at The University of Kansas Health Systems ER – Great Bend, Kansas. He was born on November 30, 1990, in Great Bend, Kansas to Michael Moore and Christa Morrison.

A lifetime resident of Great Bend, Michael worked in the oil field. He attended services at the First Street Church of God. Michael was a tattoo enthusiast, and enjoyed playing basketball, watching his daughter’s soccer games, and spending time with his family and friends.

Survivors include mother, Christa Demel and husband Donald of Great Bend; father, Michael Moore of Valley Center; significant other, Denise Allende of Wichita; daughter, Emma Allende; brother, Nathan Moore of Great Bend; sisters, Jamie Moore and Katrina Moore, both of Great Bend; stepbrother, Phillip Demel of Great Bend; stepsister, Rabecca Demel of Great Bend; maternal grandparents, Dennis and Josie Morrison of Sand Springs, Oklahoma; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He is preceded in death by a brother, Jerod Espinosa; and paternal grandparents, Arthur Lee Moore and Patricia Shelton.

Eugene F. “Gene” Beck, 95, died February 22, 2025, at Credo Senior Living, Hoisington, Kansas. He was born July 10, 1929, in Redwing, Kansas, the son of Frank and Marie (Klug) Beck.

A longtime Hoisington resident, Gene was a self-employed contract pumper in the oil field. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus Council #1521, and the American Legion Post #286.

Gene’s favorite pastimes included fishing, playing horseshoes, bowling, bird watching and watching his favorite sports teams. Family functions were what he treasured most and where he would often end up singing and playing the piano.

On November 27, 1950, he married Lillian M. Urban in Hoisington, Kansas. She preceded him in death on April 8, 2004.

He is survived by four children; Marlene Beck of Great Bend, Allan Beck and wife Anne of Claflin, Ron Beck and wife Susan of Derby, Randy Beck and wife Daphne of Great Bend; two sisters, Betty Steiner and husband Kenny of Hoisington, and Kathy Thompson of Conroe, Texas; 9 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, brother, Elmer “Al” Beck, and sisters, Bernice Christopher, Elma Stricker, and Helen Urban.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday with family to greet friends, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Vigil with Knights of Columbus Rosary will begin at 7 p.m.

Judy Lynne Christiansen, 76, went to be with her heavenly Father, February 3, 2025, in Great Bend, Kansas. She was born September 9, 1948, in Great Bend to Larry and Helen (McMullen) Green.

Judy married Gary Jerome Christiansen December 1, 1992, in Great Bend. He preceded her in death September 3, 2011. Judy worked for Venture transferring needed materials to areas for construction. She was very social and enjoyed fellowship with her friends. She was very active at the Great Bend Rec Center, taking Tai Chi and Yoga classes. She loved being surrounded by friends at the Eagle’s.

Survivors include stepsons, Shawn Christiansen of Tex., Nick Christiansen of Great Bend; step grandchildren, Christopher Christiansen, Gage Christiansen, and Desteny English; many cousins; and friends who will miss her dearly. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

A celebration of life will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., March 1, 2025, at Fraternal Order of Eagles, 1024 Main St., Great Bend. Betty Sue Chlumsky, age 83, of Great Bend, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, February 18, 2025, at Aster Estates, Great Bend, Kansas.&nbsp; Betty was born December 13, 1941 in Ingram, Arkansas to Cloys William and Nova Neaomi (Hayes) Bishop and was the oldest of 3 children including Paul Bishop and Wilma “Willie” (Bishop) Ellis.&nbsp; Betty spent her childhood in the Timken, Kansas area and graduated from Bison Rural High School in 1960.&nbsp; She had 1 child – Michael D. Mitchell.

Betty worked retail in the Great Bend area including Sears, Roebuck and Company and several other businesses.&nbsp; She married John Chlumsky in 1969.&nbsp; Together, they started Chlumsky Liquor Mart in the mid-1970’s.&nbsp; She worked at the store through its closing in 2022.&nbsp; Betty was a member of the Church of Christ in Great Bend and enjoyed many friends she made along the way.&nbsp; Betty was an avid cook with many of her friends and family enjoying her wonderful meals.&nbsp; She also loved to read and follow the news and politics.

Terra Gale Brodie, 61, passed away Saturday, February 15 ,2025 at Kansas Medical Center in Andover, KS, surrounded by her family and friends. Terra was born June 30, 1963, in Wichita, KS, the daughter of Delmar and Johanna Brodie.

Terra grew up in Great Bend, Ks and graduated from Great Bend High School. In 1983, Terra married Donald Raybern, they later divorced. She worked for Jacam in Sterling, Ks for many years and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

Terra is proceeded in death by her parents; and one brother-in-law, Jimmy.

She is survived by one daughter, Jana Armbruster and significant other Tyler; two sons, Jeffrey (Tiffany Riley) and Jeremy (Bobbie) Raybern; 16 grandchildren, Kyler, Kinzie, Kale, Blakelee, Brayton, Maddison, Abigail, Gage, Nicolette, Decklyn, Taylor, McKynlea, Macilynn, Maggie, Marci, Easton; and one great grandchild, Kane; one brother, Troy (Michelle) Brodie and two nephews, Blake and Aaron.

Terra Brodie, age 61

Dennis Lee Albrecht, age 82, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Friday, February 14, 2025, at his home.&nbsp; Dennis was born May 7, 1942, at his home in Paradise, Kansas to Edward and Meta (Paulsen) Albrecht.&nbsp; Dennis grew up in the Paradise area and graduated from Paradise High School in 1960.&nbsp; He was married to his high school sweetheart, and the love of his life Donna (Schmidtberger) on July 7, 1963, in Paradise, Kansas.&nbsp; They made their home in Russell after marriage.&nbsp; The union was blessed with two daughters, Debra and Tamera.

Dennis attended trade school for a short time after graduating high school to become a mechanic but decided to join the work force instead.&nbsp; He worked for Mack-Welling Lumber Company and Harry Hibschman (Chief Industries), both of Russell.&nbsp; He also volunteered for the Russell Volunteer Fire Department.&nbsp; Dennis eventually became a self-employed carpenter for many years until he went to work for the Street Department at the City of Russell in 1987.&nbsp; He retired from there in 2005.&nbsp;

Family was important to Dennis who enjoyed attending his kids and grandkids’ sporting events.&nbsp; Dennis and Donna were also avid motorcycle riders and took many trips on their Goldwing during their younger years. Dennis was very interested in the mountain man culture and history and was a founding member of the Russell Muzzle Loaders Club.&nbsp; He attended every black powder rendezvous he could get to.&nbsp; He often just went to socialize and most of the time, didn’t even shoot his gun.&nbsp; He also taught his grandsons to shoot black powder and was very proud of them.&nbsp; Dennis and Donna also traveled on many Vosh trips to Panama delivering eyeglasses to the needy.

He is survived by two daughters Debra Morris (Case), and Tamera Krause (Richard) both of Russell, four grandchildren, Coady Morris (KC) and Kale Morris (Elizabeth) both of Russell and Nathan Krause (Melissa) of Wichita, and Ryan Krause of Manhattan, and three great grandchildren, Noah &nbsp;&amp; Benjamin Morris, and Wyatt Krause.&nbsp; He is preceded in death by his wife Donna, his parents, and three brothers, Donald, John, and Gary Albrecht.

Celebration of Dennis’ Life will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, February 21, 2025 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell.&nbsp; A Graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, at the Mt Hermon Cemetery in Paradise, Kansas.&nbsp; Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, Thursday, at the Mortuary, with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM.&nbsp; Memorial contributions can be made to Russell Muzzle Loaders. Dennis Albrecht, age 82

George A. “Blackie” Hejny, 91, passed away peacefully February 14, 2025, at Lane County Hospital Long Term Care in Dighton, Kansas. He was born June 11, 1933, in Great Bend to George and Christine (Stremel) Hejny. George was previously married to Dora Jean (Whitsel), Oneita (Snow) Frisby, and Karen Gillespie. He married Dixie Hawks August 21, 1986, in Lyons. She survives.

Being raised on the family farm in Olmitz, Blackie had been a resident of Great Bend since 2000, coming from Lyons. Blackie a welder by trade, started working for S &amp; S Welding and later co-owned and operated H &amp; S Welding. He welded for area pipelines, oilfields and independent drilling companies, such as Sterling Drilling, Duke Drilling and FH &amp; B. During the course of his welding career, he owned and operated Blackie’s Welding. He hung up his helmet and put up his mig when he retired in 1995. He also managed to find time to open Blackie’s Lounge, which was enjoyed during the 1970’s. He was a proud 72-year member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles since 1952 and a member of the Catholic faith, attending Prince of Peace Parish. He found joy in being in the great outdoors hunting, fishing and gardening. George never knew a stranger and because of this, he will be missed by many friends made, but especially his family.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 38 years, Dixie J. Hejny of Norton; sons, Douglas Hejny of Great Bend, Daniel Hejny and his wife Jenny of McCamey, Tex., Robert Hejny of Great Bend; daughter, Georgina “Gina” Cartmill and her husband Howard of Dighton; step son, Deyton Hagar of Cambridge Neb.; step daughter, Julie Campbell of Norton; sisters, Esther Tattershall of Fruita, Colo., Alice Copple and her husband Max of Miltonvale, Helen Ackerman and her husband Richard of Concordia, Mo.; brothers, Donald Hejny and his wife Roberta of La Mesa, Calif., Bernard Hejny and his wife Jeannie of Grand Junction, Colo., Leonard Hejny of Gorham; aunt, Ada Stremel of Great Bend; and 18 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; four infant sons; brothers, Edward Hejny, Ralph Hejny; sister, Susan Shupe and her husband Boyd; brother-in-law, Lee Tattershall; infant sister, Clara Mae Hejny; stepdaughter Deborah Sue Campbell; one grandson, Riley Hager; and stepson, Darin Campbell.

George 'Blackie' Hejny, age 91

Gwyn Eileen Boepple, 78, passed away February 11, 2025, at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington, Kansas. She was born January 24, 1947, in Junction City, to Clay and Geraldine (Edwards) Moreland. Gwyn married Harold Edward Boepple June 19, 1966, in Hoxie. He passed away September 19, 2011.

Gwyn worked as a med-aide for Woodhaven Care Center in Ellinwood then obtained her license and became owner and operator of G &amp; H Insurance in 1992. She lived in Ellinwood from 1966 to 2012 when she then moved to the Great Bend area.

Gwyn had a gift of music and served as a pianist and organist for St. John Lutheran, Ellinwood Calvary Baptist, Grace Community Church, and CrossPoint where she was a member. For a season, Gwyn put her culinary skills to work by providing Wednesday night meals. She loved getting together with friends and playing pitch, pinochle, or canasta. Gwyn loved to travel and especially enjoyed sailing the waters on cruises.

Survivors include sons, Clay Boepple and his wife Kristine of Great Bend, Harold "Eddie" Boepple of Great Bend; daughter, Lisa Taylor and her husband Bruce of Claflin; grandchildren, Rachelle Zamarripa, Ryan Taylor (Nicole), Brandon Taylor (Alexis), Hannah Boepple, and Laura Boepple; great grandchildren, A.J. Zamarripa, Gabriel Zamarripa, Benjamin Zamarripa, Colton Taylor, Ian Taylor, Spencer Taylor. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 45 years, Harold Edward Boepple; and brother, Melvin Moreland.

Gwyn Boepple, age 78

Francis Eugene “Gene” Smith, Jr., 80, passed away Feb. 12, 2025, at The University of Kansas Health Systems – Great Bend. He was born in Dighton on Aug. 28, 1944, to Francis Eugene, Sr. and Marjorie Etta (Tustin) Smith. On October 17, 2017, he married Cindy Lee in Great Bend.

Gene was a veteran of the United States Navy from 1961 to 1967, being honorably discharged with the rank of BM3. He had multiple professions throughout his life: first as a cowboy on ranches in Arizona, next a career with Canteen Vending and Food Service, retiring in 1995, then went on to design cabinets. Gene was a gifted, self-taught artist, and enjoyed doing children and pet portraits. He offered drawing demonstrations for many years in crayon, colored and graphite pencil at the Kansas State Fair and won several ribbons for artwork entries. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the Optimist Club. He was a past member of Artists At Large, Great Bend.

Survivors include his wife of the home; daughter, Genia Hayes (Jimmy) of Ellinwood; step-children, Melissa Leiker (Chad) of Great Bend, Chris Stephens (Heidi) of Kansas City, Missouri, and Travis Lee of Wichita; two granddaughters, Nicole McKie (Adam), and Audrey Likes; twelve grandchildren from his blended family, Tristan, Reagan, Alexa, Breanna, Jaxton, Deja, Zaid (Stephanie), Ethan (Kennedy), Jacob and Adam; six great-grandchildren, Noah, Cyrus, Parker, River, Willow, and Weston; sister, Kathy Chavez of Avondale, Arizona; brother-in-law, Mark Meyer (Elaine); and sisters-in-law, Barbara Smith, Inge Smith, Mary McGee, and Denise Thode; many nieces and nephews; and beloved yorkie, Carly.

He is preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Dr. Darrel, Robert, and Stanley Smith; brother in law, Tony McGee; sister in law, Patti Smith.

Francis 'Gene' Smith, Jr., age 80

Michael E. Jacobs, 80, of Iron River, MI, passed away on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, at Teal Lake Senior Living Community in Negaunee, MI.

He was born on December 29, 1944, in Great Bend, KS, the son of the late Lawrence and Evelyn (Schauf) Jacobs. Mike grew up on the family farm in Dubuque, KS and attended the Dubuque Catholic School and graduated from Claflin, KS High School with the class of 1963. He then graduated from Hutchinson Junior College in 1965 and completed his degree in Mortuary Science from the Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science in 1967. After graduating, Mike interned at Elliott Mortuary in Hutchinson, KS. He then moved to Pueblo, CO and was employed at T.G. McCarthy Funeral Home.

Mike married the former Toni Prickett on February 14, 1970, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Hutchinson, KS and the couple made their home in Pueblo, CO. In 1972, they moved back to Kansas City (Johnson County) and Mike was employed by Muehlebach Funeral Home in Kansas City, MO. In June 1978, Mike and Toni moved to Iron River after purchasing the Duvall Funeral Home. They operated the funeral home for the next 33 years as the Duvall-Jacobs Funeral Home and then as Jacobs Funeral Home Inc. of Iron River. Their son, Paul, joined them in business in 2007 and after Mike retired on June 1, 2011, Paul took over ownership and continues operating the business today. Mike and Toni were three days shy of celebrating their 55th wedding anniversary.

Mike was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Iron River and was a third-degree knight of the Iron River Council 2300 Knights of Columbus and a former member of the Iron River Elks Lodge #1671. During his career Mike held memberships in the Michigan Funeral Directors Association, the Wisconsin Funeral Directors Association and the National Funeral Director Association. In retirement he enjoyed spending the winter months at their home in Scottsdale, AZ and summers at the family cabin on Hagerman Lake. Mike also liked riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle, sailing, collecting clocks, and spending time with his grandchildren. He was also an accomplished finish carpenter and an avid gadget person.

Mike is survived by his wife, Toni; son, Paul (Megan) Jacobs of Iron River; daughter, Jennifer (Derek) Cardinal of Marquette, MI; brother, Lawrence Jacobs of Hoisington, KS; sister, Joyce (Gilbert) Viets of Naples, FL; sisters-in-law, Jacque Henry of Wichita, KS and Debra (Tim) Richards of Overland Park, KS; grandchildren, Owen, Aiden, and Evan Cardinal and Landon and Hadley Jacobs; aunt, Patty Lucas of Omaha, NE; nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

He was also preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Bonnie and Dick Miller and in-laws, Gene and Doris Prickett.

A visitation will be held on Monday, February 17, 2025, from 9:00am to 11:00am at Jacobs Funeral Home of Iron River. A funeral service will follow at 11:30am at St. Agnes Catholic Church with the Very Rev. Timothy Ekaitis to offer the Mass of Christian Burial.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to St. Agnes Catholic Church or the Northwoods Animal Shelter.

He then graduated from Hutchinson Junior College in 1965 and completed his degree in Mortuary Science from the Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science in 1967. After graduating, Mike interned at Elliott Mortuary in Hutchinson, KS. He then moved to Pueblo, CO and was employed at T.G. McCarthy Funeral Home.Mike married the former Toni Prickett on February 14, 1970, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Hutchinson, KS and the couple made their home in Pueblo, CO. In 1972, they moved back to Kansas City (Johnson County) and Mike was employed by Muehlebach Funeral Home in Kansas City, MO. In June 1978, Mike and Toni moved to Iron River after purchasing the Duvall Funeral Home. They operated the funeral home for the next 33 years as the Duvall-Jacobs Funeral Home and then as Jacobs Funeral Home Inc. of Iron River. Camilo Martinez, 73, passed away surrounded by family, Feb. 11, 2025, at his home in Great Bend. He was born July 18, 1951, in Ocotlan, Jalisco, Mexico to Maximiliano &amp; Maria De Jesus (Torres) Martinez.

Camilo married Guadalupe Flores Dec. 26, 1980, in Ocotlan, Jalisco, Mexico. They moved to the area, coming from Los Angeles in 1995. He worked for Great Bend Packing as a processor. He then went to work for KBK as a Fabricator until his retirement in 2014. Camilo enjoyed exercising and loved to go on runs. He found joy in keeping his lawn and cars in good order. He was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. He will be missed by his family and friends and everyone that knew him. He will be remembered as a loving father and grandfather.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 44 years, Guadalupe Flores Martinez; son, Nelson Martinez and his wife Laura of Great Bend; daughters, Carol Ordonez and her husband Edel of Great Bend, Lorena Martinez and her husband Jose of Haysville; sisters, Beatriz Martinez, Bertha Martinez; brothers, Cesario Martinez, Julio Martinez, Angel Martinez, Jose Martinez; grandchildren, Nicole, Brianna, Edel, Jr., Renata, Katelyn, Kimberly, Emiliano, Kash Michael; great grandson, Ruben. Deanne R. Weathers, 84, passed away February 7, 2025, at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington, Kansas. She was born on April 27, 1940, in Denver, Colorado, to Alvin “Al” and Bertha (Tammen) Hanken. On October 28, 1965, she married Larry Weathers in Great Bend, Kansas.

A longtime resident of Great Bend, Deanne was a homemaker and a farm wife. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, and cherished spending time with her family and beloved yorkie, Abby.

Survivors include her husband of the home; son, Kevin Fox and wife Jane of Larned; step daughters, Annette Weathers and Rhonda Weathers, both of Michigan; two grandchildren, Tyler Fox and wife Sarah of Prosper, Texas, and Katie Havelka and husband Clayton of Rogersville, Missouri; step grandchild, Riley Weathers of Michigan; six great grandchildren, Jackson, Will, and Penny Fox, and Gideon, Noelle, and Eden Havelka; and a brother, Donald Hanken and wife Cathy of Wamego.

Genevieve “Jenny” Darlene Lamb, 82, passed away February 9, 2025, in Great Bend, Kansas. She was born July 26, 1942, in Wichita, to Roy and Ella May (Davis) Dewing.

Jenny married Keith Lamb July 29, 1962, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. They made Great Bend their home in 1966. She was a long-time faithful employee of First National Bank and American State Bank, retiring in 2012, as an assistant Vice President. She enjoyed weaving and was a talented artist specializing in a broad range of mediums, ranging from oil painting, charcoal to sketching. Jenny was an accomplished pianist. She was also known to be an equine enthusiast, exhibiting her love through riding, breeding and training horses.

Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Keith Lamb; son, Bart Lamb and his wife Chris of Poteet, Tex.; daughters, Rhonda Hall and her husband Tim of Austin, Ky., April Pfeifer and her husband Sheldon of Ellis; brothers, Roland Dewing of Albuquerque, N Mex., Robert Dewing and his wife Aloyse of Las Vegas, Nev.; brother in law Jimmy Noble of Las Cruces, N. Mardelle was born November 9, 1928, in Marshall, Colorado, the daughter of Fredrick Ernest and Lela Ida (Epler) Callihan. She was a resident of Rush County, Kansas, since 1966, moving there from Holcomb, Kansas. She was a homemaker and X-ray technician before her retirement.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, and JOY Club, all of Bison, Kansas.

On October 29, 1950, she married Bruce Harlan Kenyon at Broadway Methodist Church, Denver, Colorado. He preceded her in death May 8, 1997.

Survivors include: four sons, Alan Kenyon (Ronnell), Larned, Kansas, Roger Kenyon (Linda), Otis, Kansas, Warren Kenyon (Shirley), Lucas, Kansas, and Mark Kenyon (Jodi), Augusta, Kansas; 12 grandchildren, Alan Kenyon (Kanoco), Eric Kenyon (Bree), Sean Kenyon (Kara), Ann Kenyon, (Robert Hendrix), Will Kenyon (Aimee), Kara Heller, Holly Kenyon, Tim Stude (Farah), Randy Stude (Mary), Christi Staab, Amanda Adams (Justin), and Brett Kenyon (Kristin); 25 great grandchildren; and five great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one brother, Jon Callihan; and two sisters, Sherrie Alverson, and Beverly Carlson.

Honoring Mardelle’s wishes, the family has chosen cremation.

M. Mardelle Kenyon, age 96

Lowell Elvin Elder, 83, passed away February 5, 2025, in Great Bend, Kansas. He was born January 24, 1942, in Sullivan, Illinois to Everett and Thelma (Stirrett) Elder.

Lowell was an American at heart and a patriot which led him to serve with The United States Army. He married Leatitia Corrine Maxedon June 7, 1964, in Sullivan, Ill. Lowell worked for Firestone as a Distributer for 30 years. After retirement, he hauled oil for Walker Trucking Company to surrounding areas. He enjoyed going to his local McDonalds and ordering his favorite meal of a cheeseburger and iced coffee. He was a member of Heartland Community Church.

Survivors include his bride of 60 years Leatitia Corrine Elder; son, Mike Elder of Great Bend; daughter, Candace “Candy” Murphy and her husband Eric of Great Bend; brother, Ron Elder of Bethany, Ill; grandchildren, Cori James Elder, Trevor Elder, Cara Murphy, Cailyn Murphy, Caleb Murphy; daughter in law, Dawn Elder; He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Terry Elder; brothers Carl Elder and Marvin Elder.

Lowell Elder, age 83

Lynette M. Blakeslee, 97, formerly of rural Great Bend, died Feb. 7, 2025, at Diversicare of Larned. She was born on Aug. 27, 1927, at rural Seward, to Bruno and Emma (Weigt) Fischer. On May 29, 1955, she married George W. Blakeslee, Jr. at Peace Evangelical and Reformed Church (now Peace Church) in Hudson. He passed March 22, 2008.

She was a graduate of Emporia State Teacher’s College, where Lynette went on to teach school in rural Stafford County, Ellinwood, Larned, Germany and Great Bend. She was also a farm wife. Lynette was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ in Great Bend and was a member of Central Kansas Quilt Guild and Pilot Club. She was great at cooking, sewing, and gardening, and cherished time with family.

Survivors include two sons, Kent Blakeslee and wife Julie of Ellinwood, and Darrel Blakeslee of Dumas, Texas; daughter, Karen Blakeslee of Manhattan; two grandchildren, Eric Blakeslee and wife Mackenzie of Ellinwood, and Kyle Blakeslee and wife Marissa of Wichita; great-grandchild, Kassidy Blakeslee, and another on the way; sister, Leona Fischer of Hutchinson; and sisters-in-law, Shirley Fischer of Seward, Juanita Fischer of Stafford, Norma Blakeslee of St. John, and Helen Boyd of Wichita.

She is preceded in death by her husband; parents; and brother, Elton Fischer.
