
Vernon Joseph Skolaut, 89, passed away December 30, 2025, at Azria Health Woodhaven, Great Bend, Kansas. He was born July 29, 1936, in Great Bend, to Joseph and Gertrude (Mauler) Skolaut.
A lifetime resident of rural Olmitz, after graduating from high school Vernon joined and served his country in the National Guard. Vernon was a dedicated dairyman, farmer, stockman, and lifetime member of St. Ann Catholic Church. He was an avid Amateur Radio “Ham” operator, with the extra class call sign of WAØNHS, was creative and mechanical – having once made an airboat. He was a humble and thoughtful person, taking into consideration others. He was loyal and committed to his family. He loved his nieces, great nephews, and one great niece deeply.
Survivors include one sister, Joann Koriel (John) of Rush Center; brother, Charles Skolaut (Mary) of Great Bend; nieces, Elizabeth Schmidt of Eudora, Angela Harvey (Flynn) of Liberty, Missouri; great niece, Brianna Schmidt; great nephews, Connor Schmidt, Dylan Schmidt, Carson Harvey, and Tucker Harvey. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Eugene “Gene” Skolaut; and nephew, Ethan Schmidt.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 3:00 p.m., Friday, January 2, 2026, at St. Ann Catholic Church, Olmitz, Kansas with Father Warren Stecklein presiding, with rosary proceeding the service at 2:00 p.m. at the church. Interment will follow at St. Ann Cemetery, Olmitz. Visitation will take place 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, January 1, 2026, with family receiving guests from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., at Bryant Funeral Home. Memorials have been designated to St. Ann Cemetery Fund or Albert Volunteer Fire Department, in care of Bryant Funeral Home, 1425 Patton Rd., Great Bend, KS 67530.
