Kenneth Duane Brinson, 87, died September 27, 2021, at St. Francis Hospital, Greenville, South Carolina. He was born June 24, 1934, in Great Bend, Kansas, the son of James “Marion” and Ruth B. (Atteberry) Brinson. He served his country as a Specialist 4 with the United States Army from 1956 to 1958.

Kenneth was a machinist and electrician, working for The Tool Room Inc., Enlectrontica, and the T.V. Station.

He is survived by his children; daughter, Joy Richey of Powdersville, South Carolina; son, James K. Richey and wife Melaine of Rio Rancho, New Mexico; and six grandchildren, Ben Fletcher, Jonathan Vaughn, Coryn, Caitlyn, Carissa, and Cameron Richey.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a daughter, Hope McCurry.

Graveside service will be at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, October 7, 2021, at Hoisington Cemetery, Hoisington, Kansas, with Pastor Tim Patrick officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Fort Riley Army Honor Guard.

A Memorial service will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 23, 2021, at First Baptist Church, Greenville, South Carolina.

Lucille (Bryant) Kurtz, 96, passed away on September 29, 2021, at Diversicare of Larned. She was born on May 27, 1925, at Ellinwood to Wilbur and Hilda (Christiansen) Bryant. She grew up on the family farm south of Ellinwood and graduated from Ellinwood High School. She married Henry Kurtz, Jr. on August 5, 1950, in Chicago, Ill. He died March 6, 2013.

Henry, Lucille and the kids resided in upper Michigan before moving back to Kansas in 1960. She was a bookkeeper in her early years for Sears and Roebuck, as well as various banks. She then was a homemaker. Lucille enjoyed garage sales but especially loved spending time with her family.

Survivors include, two sons, Steven Kurtz of Pawnee Rock and Roger Kurtz and wife Kala of Larned; two daughters, Rita Kurtz of Larned and Marla Stella Kurtz of Dodge City; seven grandchildren, Nathan Barker, Jason Kurtz, Brandon Kurtz and wife Shelby, Derrick Kurtz and wife Ashley, Vincent Stella and wife Crysta, Natalie Hayes and husband Jesse, and Nichole Pearce and husband Jeremy; and fifteen great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Henry Kurtz, Jr.; two sisters, Ruby Wilson and Barbara Adams; and a brother, Leo Bryant.

Michael Alan “Mike” Schmidt, 71, Manhattan, died Saturday, September 25, 2021, at his home.

He was born September 24, 1950, in Hays, the son of Alfred Lee and Mary Kay (House) Schmidt.&nbsp; He was a 1969 graduate of St. Joseph’s Military Academy and earned an Associate’s Degree in Rehabilitation for the Blind and Visually Impaired from the Hadley School for the Blind.&nbsp; On June 20, 1970 he was united in marriage to Sally Jean Bethe in Hays, and they celebrated 24 years of marriage before she preceded him in death on February 18, 1995.&nbsp; Mike was a musician in several bands, and his bands Soul Express, Tempest, Beast, and Spider and the Crabs earned the distinguished honor of induction into the Kansas Music Hall of Fame.&nbsp; He also worked as a rehabilitation teacher for the blind and visually impaired and a coach courier for Kansas State University Athletics, retiring in 2021.&nbsp; He was a member of the Northwest Kansas Association for the Visually Impaired and enjoyed refereeing and umpiring sports at all levels. &nbsp;

Survivors include two sons: Tyler Schmidt and fiancé Amanda Tucker of Ellinwood and Nick Schmidt of Hays, a daughter: Miki Boese of Great Bend, his girlfriend: Carol Wirthman of Lawrence, four brothers: Larry Schmidt and wife Melea of Hays, Dan Schmidt and wife Connie of Hays, Randy Schmidt of Yorktown, VA, and John Schmidt and wife Dana of Hays, one sister: Karla Ruder and husband John of Plainville, four grandchildren: Seth McBride and wife Angie, Zachary McBride, Bailey McBride, and Braxton Tucker, all of Great Bend, three great granddaughters: Beatrice, Harper, and Hazel McBride of Great Bend, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Martha Jean Wolf, 87, passed away September 28, 2021, at Great Bend Health &amp; Rehab. She was born September 17, 1934, at Pratt to Ershel &amp; Maxine (Null) Walters. She married Billy Wolf on February 3, 1951, at Raton, New Mexico. He died June 16, 2000.

A Great Bend resident since 1960, Martha was a secretary at Centel for 33 years. She was of Methodist faith and a past Eagles member. Martha loved to play darts and especially spend time with her family.

Survivors include, her daughter, Yvonne Watkins (Steve Oetken) of Great Bend; a granddaughter, Angela Caldwell (Mike); three great grandchildren, Alyssa Wilson (Marty), Brandon Watkins and Angel Watkins; and six great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Billy Wolf; longtime companion, Don McEachern; twin sister, Beverly Duraso; and a great great granddaughter, Bailey Goodheart.

Bruce Alan Blount, 65, passed away November 27, 2019 in Elk Grove, Illinois.

He was born March 19, 1956 in Laughlin, Texas; the son of Wayne Rogers and Jean Kemp Blount. He served in the United States Navy for over 20 years, retiring in 2004.

He enjoyed riding motorcycles and taught motorcycle safety courses in Maryland; was an avid bass guitar player and was a big Jayhawk fan.

Wayne Rogers Blount, 89, passed away September 14, 2021 at Parker, Colorado.

He was born February 28, 1932 in Larned, the son of Causby and Mildred Saunders Blount. A longtime area resident; he grew up in Larned and graduated from Larned High School and the University of Kansas.

He was a member of the Willow Creek Church in Barrington, IL and the 1950 Larned State Basketball team, was an avid Jayhawk fan, and loved spending time with his great-grandkids.

On January 30, 1955 he married Jean Kemp, in Winfield, Kansas. She survives.

Other survivors include; a daughter, Lisa (Scott) Spjuth, Parker, Colorado; a sister, Jeannine (Mike) Girton, Great Bend; three grandchildren, Justin (Stephanie) Blount, Littleton, Colorado, Shelby (Jared) Esquivel, Peyton, Colorado and Anastasia (Jett) Meenach, Hampstead, North Carolina; and three great-grandchildren; Lincoln Spjuth, JJ Meenach, and AubreyKate Meenach.

Jonathan Thomas Frey, father, mentor, sponsor, and 37-year friend of Bill W., passed away peacefully at his home in Kansas City, Missouri on June 28, 2021, at the age of 83.&nbsp;

Jonathan was born on August 12, 1937, in Great Bend, KS to the late Frank E. and Gladys Frey and grew up on the family farm with his younger sisters, Beverly Frey Nichols of Great Bend, Kansas and the late Karen Kathleen Frey. During his school years, he was active in basketball, track, choir, operetta, and band. He was a member of the St. Patrick’s Church choir and performed a solo of Silent Night during the Christmas Eve Mass for many years. His particular love and talent was playing the trumpet where he participated in brass quartet and sextet, receiving honors and awards in both school and state competitions.&nbsp;

Jonathan was never destined to stay home and farm; from a young age he dreamt of travel and adventure. He left Great Bend with his trumpet to pursue music at Wichita State University. His college earnings were supplemented by working for a musical instrument company selling accordions door to door. Perhaps it was here that his gift for sales was first realized; he was to become a much sought-after candidate in several high-level sales and marketing roles in the furniture industry which spanned an over 50-year career with several Fortune 500 companies, most recently with Guardsman Chemical as VP of Sales and Consulting.&nbsp;

A born leader, Jonathan had a true passion for helping others, and he was a sponsor within the AA community for over 30 years. He traveled to countless U.S. cities, speaking to and mentoring those who, like himself, wished to get and stay sober. He believed in making amends and the discipline of restitution as outlined in the AA Big Book. He attracted people from all walks of life with his unique charisma and motivational speaking. Within the AA community, he was called The Oracle in Atlanta and The Professor in Great Bend. In later years, he followed the principles of Stoicism.&nbsp;

Jonathan loved sports and had a lifelong passion for cars while following the auto racing sports world. In the 70’s, he loved the Dallas Cowboys, but in later years, he was an avid fan of the Kansas City Chiefs. He had fond and exciting memories of Michigan yacht clubs and boating the Great Lakes. He practiced windsurfing, was a jogger, and never passed an opportunity to show up at the gym. This was countered by his absolute love of food – whether gourmet, home-cooked, or local fare. Most importantly to his children, Jonathan was a total movie buff, and many enjoyable times were had simply watching great shows with his family. However, his earliest love never left him, and music was always to have great significance in his life. From singing in church, attending the symphony and rock concerts, to playing his favorite tunes, Jonathan wanted to experience music in all its forms.&nbsp;

Jonathan was preceded in death by Joyce Minton, the mother of his surviving children: Rene Weese (Paul), Kristy Hennessey (Benji), Brian Frey, and Erin Stangel (Tomas). He is survived by Barbara Frey, the mother of his surviving children: Ryan Frey and Marissa Frey. He is survived by his sister Beverly Frey Nichols and nephew Shonny Nichols. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.&nbsp;

A graveside service will be held at the Great Bend Cemetery in Great Bend, Kansas on Saturday, October 2, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. Jonathan will be inurned in the Frey family plot alongside his father, mother, and youngest sister. From singing in church, attending the symphony and rock concerts, to playing his favorite tunes, Jonathan wanted to experience music in all its forms.&nbsp;Jonathan was preceded in death by Joyce Minton, the mother of his surviving children: Rene Weese (Paul), Kristy Hennessey (Benji), Brian Frey, and Erin Stangel (Tomas). He is survived by Barbara Frey, the mother of his surviving children: Ryan Frey and Marissa Frey. He is survived by his sister Beverly Frey Nichols and nephew Shonny Nichols. Marjorie J. Ochs, 85, Rush Center, Kansas, passed away Saturday, September 18, 2021, at Rush County Memorial Hospital Intermediate Swing Bed, La Crosse, Kansas.

Marjorie was born June 21, 1936, in Rush Center, Kansas, the daughter of Richard “Dick” and Elva (Cooley) Cunningham.&nbsp; She was a lifelong resident of Rush County, Kansas.&nbsp; A 1954 graduate of La Crosse High School, La Crosse, Kansas, she was a homemaker.

She was a member of Hope Lutheran Church, Rush Center, Kansas.

On December 19, 1954, she married M. Lee Ochs at the Lutheran Church, Otis, Kansas.&nbsp; He preceded her in death May 19, 2016.

Survivors include one son, Mark Ochs (Balinda), Great Bend, Kansas; one daughter, Debra Lewis (Dean), Salina, Kansas; one sister, Gloria Renz, Albert, Kansas, two sisters-in-law:&nbsp; Lois Cunningham Thompson of La Crosse, Kansas and Valta Dreher of Rush Center, Kansas, and numerous nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a daughter, Rhonda Gass; a son in law, Ronald Gass; an infant brother, Lowell Cunningham; one brother Richard Cunningham; one sister, Audrey Gough; and two brothers in law, Arlyn Renz; and Kenneth Gough.

Tonya L. (Bittel) Sweat passed away on 9/21/2021 at Hays Medical Center.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was born June 3, 1980 in Hays, Kansas&nbsp;to Marvin and Mary (Wasinger) Bittel.

She married Shawn Sweat on 4/28/2007, at St. Fidelis in Victoria, KS. Tonya graduated from Thomas Moore Prep-Marian High School in 1998 where she went on to Fort Hays State University to receive a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a Minor in German. Tonya moved to Gladstone, MO in 2004. She became an active member of Northland Cathedral. Tonya and Shawn opened their home and hearts to children in the foster care system in Missouri and were fortunate enough to be able to adopt two of the children, Hannah and Ryan, both in 2012. Tonya and Shawn opened their arms and hearts to children who needed them most and showed them a loving family and what it means to follow in their faith. In 2019 Tonya and Shawn decided it was time to move away from Kansas City and moved to LaCrosse KS. Tonya enjoyed spending time with her nieces and nephews, she would spend hours playing video games with them or just being on the phone with them while they played. They would spend almost every weekend at her house working on crafts or puzzles. Tonya became affectionately known as Tonga by her youngest niece and nephew. After moving to LaCrosse she became a member of Celebration Community Church. She was a devoted friend and would build lifelong friendships with the people she came across in her life. If anyone ever needed anything she was always right there for them.

Survivors include her husband Shawn, LaCrosse; son Ryan, Hays; daughter Hannah, Kansas City, MO; parents Marvin and Mary Bittel, Hays; sister Sheri Bittel (Joe Hillebrand), Hays; brother-in-law Scott Sweat (Tiffany), Olathe; father and mother-in-law Leroy and Kay Sweat, Olathe; nieces and nephews Allison Hillebrand, Alex Hillebrand, Leah Hillebrand, Rhys Hillebrand, Hays and Dylan Sweat, Olathe.

Judith “Judi” Anne (Cox) Stewart, 79, passed away September 23, 2021, after a two-year battle with cancer. She was born on September 17, 1942, in Oklahoma City, to Arthur and Helen (Truitt) Cox. Judi put herself through college and taught in public schools for 43 years, the bulk of those years in Marion, KS. Children and literacy always had a special place in her heart.

Judi and her husband Ron were happily married for 38 years and were actively involved in ministry. Judi loved the Lord and dedicated her life to teaching, missions, and ministry. She had a great compassion for people, loving on and encouraging more than we could count. One of the highlights of her life was traveling to Romania and working in their orphanages, with H2H International, Heart 2 Heart Ministries.

Judi was creative, demonstrating her gifts as a published author, an artist, gardener and avid seamstress and crafter. Her greatest joys were her beloved grandchildren.

Judi is survived by her brothers, Lonnie Cox and his wife Bonnie of Oklahoma City, Larry Cox and his wife Vicki of Blanchard, OK, and Mark and his wife Jean of Choctaw, OK; her daughter, Billye Meade and her husband Devin of Moore, OK, her son, Michael Stewart and his wife Gina of Apple Valley, MN, and daughter Shannon Wedel and her husband Darcy of Great Bend; her stepdaughters, Linda Manister of Edmond, OK, and Diane Worthington and her husband David of Oklahoma City; eight grandchildren, Delaney Meade, Nathaniel Meade, Reaghan Stewart, Kellen Stewart, Rhyan Stewart, Ethan Wedel, Evan Wedel, and Emily Wedel; three step-grandchildren, Ian Worthington, Jack Manister, and Will Manister; as well as her lifelong friend, confidant and sister in Christ, Charlotte Love of College Station, TX. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ron Stewart; and a daughter, Belinda.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Lathelda “DoDo” White, 93, passed away September 23, 2021, at Brookdale Senior Living, Great Bend. She was born December 10, 1927, at Hoisington, to Harry and Nettie (Jones) Lee. She married Leonard "Sno" White on June 9, 1946, at Hoisington. He died April 23, 2005.

A lifetime Great Bend resident, DoDo was the records manager at the Barton County Courthouse until she retired. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and served at the church librarian and historian. DoDo also held memberships with the Order of Eastern Star for 50 years, Barton County Historical Society, Fort Larned Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, American Legion Auxiliary in Great Bend, RSVP and Friends of the Library, and was a past board member for the library in Great Bend. She loved genealogy, researching history and was an avid bridge player.

Survivors include, a sister, Diann Fullerton of Yuma, Ariz.; her nephews, Todd Jones and wife Candace of Great Bend, Brent Jones and wife Cheryl of Manhattan, Lance Jones of Boulder, Colo., Dierk Haskin and wife Cheryl of Santa Fe, NM; and a niece, Rachel Cross of Salt Lake City, Utah. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leonard White; a sister, Glynnese Jones; two brother in laws, Cecil Jones and Don Fullerton; and a niece, Mary Jones.

Sister Charlotte Unrein, 90, died September 22, 2021, in the Dominican Sisters’ convent infirmary, Great Bend. She was born March 31, 1931, in LaCrosse, KS, the daughter of Carl and Lidwina (Zimmerman) Unrein. She entered the Dominican Sisters Community in 1945 and pronounced vows in 1948. Sister Charlotte celebrated seventy years of religious profession in 2018.

Sister Charlotte ministered in a variety of different ways. She began doing domestic work, and then she was sent to Nigeria as one of the original three missionaries to go there. After five years in Africa she returned to Great Bend, where she was in charge of the sewing room. She then earned a degree in nursing and worked in Garden City and Salina. When she returned to the motherhouse in 2008, she took up her work of making jellies and other items for the annual bazar.

Sister Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters, and four brothers. She is survived by one brother, Timothy Unrein, Ocala, FL; several nieces and nephews; as well as the Dominican Sisters of Peace.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, September 27, 2021. A Vigil Service will be held Sunday, September 26, at 7:00 p.m. Both will take place at the Sisters’ Convent. All attendees are asked to wear a mask. Burial will be in the Sisters’ Resurrection Cemetery. Memorials in honor of Sister Charlotte may be sent to Dominican Sisters of Peace, 2320 Airport Drive, Columbus, OH 43219-2098.

She was born March 28, 1935, in Great Bend, the second daughter of four children born to Gus and Christina (Cook) Ohnmacht. She grew up on a farm near Olmitz. She married George Barnes on August 30, 1958, in Oklahoma City. He died on March 17, 1981.

LaNora attended grade school at St. Anne’s in Olmitz and high school at Mount Carmel Academy in Wichita. In 1957 she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from Clarke College, now Clark University in Dubuque, Iowa. The following year she completed a dietetic internship at Oklahoma University Medical Center at the end of which she became a registered dietician.

LaNora and George resided in the Bay Area near San Francisco their entire married life. She was a devoted wife, mother, and loving grandmother and a wonderful homemaker. She enjoyed baking, especially homemade breads and pies. When her children were older she worked part-time as a registered dietician and later as a real estate broker in California. She came back to Kansas in 1988 to take care of her mother. She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church and the Altar Society.

Survivors include two daughters, Dr. Debra Barnes of Frederick, MD, and Diane Da Costa of Darnestown, MD; and four grandsons, Jason, Justin, David and Daniel Da Costa. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George Barnes; a brother, Galen Ohnmacht; and two sisters, Christina Hoelscher and LaVerna Moore.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday, September 24, 2021, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Altar Society Rosary at 4:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, September 25, 2021, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Great Bend, with Father Aneesh Parappanattu presiding. Stephen Wayne Schrepel, 64, died September 20, 2021, at his home in Hoisington. He was born June 22, 1957, in Hays, Kansas, the son of Leslie Charles and Carol Louise (Kimball) Schrepel. Stephen graduated from Ellinwood High School in 1976 and attended Barton Community College.

He was a past Boy Scout Leader and a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church. He served on the Hoisington City Council and as a Hoisington Volunteer Firefighter. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and woodworking, and especially spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his three children; Chadd Schrepel and wife Erin of Gardner, Todd Schrepel and Angela Schrepel, both of Hoisington; a sister, Vickie Bahr and husband Bill of Arkansas; two brothers, Terry Schrepel and wife Terri of Buellton, California, and Mark Schrepel and wife Meleah of Goddard; and two grandchildren, Wyatt and Callie Schrepel.

Visitation will be 1 – 8 p.m., Sunday, with family to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

Marvin M. Herrman, 89, La Crosse, Kansas, passed away Thursday, September 16, 2021, at Rush County Memorial Hospital Intermediate Swing Bed, La Crosse, Kansas.

Marvin was born July 19, 1932, in La Crosse, Kansas, the son of Nicholas J. and Veronica (Legleiter) Herrman.&nbsp; He was a lifelong resident of Rush County, Kansas.&nbsp; He was a 1950 graduate of La Crosse High School, La Crosse, Kansas.

He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse, Kansas, where he was formerly an usher and on the parish council.&nbsp; He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 2970, La Crosse, Kansas, where he was a former District Deputy.&nbsp; He was a 4th-degree member of the Pope Paul VI Assembly, a member of the Chamber of Commerce, both of La Crosse, Kansas, and a member of the Lions Club, Rush Center, Kansas.

Throughout his life, Marvin farmed and owned Modern Shoe Repair Service, La Crosse, Kansas.&nbsp; With his wife, Florence, he owned and operated the Corner Grill, which later became Family Castle, La Crosse, Kansas.&nbsp; They owned and operated 4 Corners Liquor Store, Rush Center, Kansas, and La Crosse Liquor, La Crosse, Kansas, for a combination of approximately 20 years.&nbsp; Marvin also worked for Flame Engineering, La Crosse, Kansas, for many years.

Marvin enjoyed visiting family and his grandchildren, playing cards, fishing, making rosaries, and especially enjoyed watching the Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas City Royals games.

On May 18, 1954, he married Florence Oborny at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Timken, Kansas.&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife, Florence Herrman, La Crosse, Kansas; one son, Michael Herrman, Topeka, Kansas; one daughter in law, Melodie&nbsp; Herrman Pruett, Topeka, Kansas;&nbsp; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and one sister in law, Twila Herrman, La Crosse, Kansas.

Darrell J. “D.J.” Moore, 84, passed away September 19, 2021, at his farm home near Penalosa, Kan. He was born to Otis R. and Gladys M. (Boyd) Moore on November 2, 1936, at Kingman, Kan. He grew to manhood on the family farm and that is also where he spent the last 30 years of his life. He married Patricia Shrauner on July 8, 1962, at Elkhart, Kan. They shared 59 years of happy adventures.

He attended the local one-room school, graduated from Cunningham High School, Pratt Junior College, Southwestern College at Winfield, Kan., and earned his Master’s Degree as an Audio-Visual Specialist at the University of Connecticut. He was awarded a summer National Foundation grant to Temple University in Philadelphia, Penn. after only a few years of teaching.

He taught Junior High School science in Hoisington, Kan., for 17 years before he became the High School Librarian for 10 years. Meanwhile, he continued his life-long farming interests in Kingman and Reno counties.

He was an active 59-year member of First United Methodist Church of Hoisington, Kan., where he and his wife sponsored the church youth group for several years at two different times. He served as Finance Chairman, Chairman of the Board, Chairman of Nominations as well as various other assignments. He was a regular attendee of Penalosa United Methodist Church during the farming season.

Survivors include his wife Patricia Moore of the home; and one son, Brett Moore of rural Kingman, Kan. He was preceded in death by infant twins, Phillip J. and Peggy K. Moore; his parents; a brother, Otis Junior Moore; and a sister, Marcelene Moore. He had a stepmother, Mildred Moore a few years after his mother’s death who is also deceased.

A lifetime Great Bend resident, Annette was a bookkeeper for Lumpy’s Bar &amp; Grill, Damm Body Shop and Estes Trash Service for many years. She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and the Altar Society. Annette enjoyed traveling with her friends, playing pitch and giving others a hard time but she especially loved to spend time with her family.

Survivors include her husband, Kevin Burton of the home; a son, Aaron Burton (Taree); a daughter, Keshia Causey (Jason); her mother, Helen Schremmer, all of Great Bend; a brother, Nathan Lopez (Carolyn) of Sun City West, AZ; and four grandchildren, Corbyn, Harper and Aftynn Causey, and Harley Dougherty. Roberta L. Nelson, 62, passed away September 20, 2021 at Hays Medical Center, Hays, KS.

She was born May 30, 1959 in Farmington, NM, the daughter of William and Doris Laverne Westbrooke. A longtime area resident, she was a homemaker.

She loved helping run the Snack Shack, playing bingo and potluck dinners at the High Rise Apartments in Great Bend and enjoyed doing crafts and reading.

Survivors include: mother, Doris Laverne Westbrooke, Farmington, NM; daughter, Michelle (Randy) Bethel, Larned; son, Michael Nelson, Larned; two brothers, Marion Dale, Harold Everette; sister, Linda Kay; three grandchildren, Rochelle Nelson, Nevada, Sheyanna Bethel and Kiara Bethel, both of Larned; six great-grandchildren, Addison Barnett, Eliza Barnett, Chelsea Barnett, Brianna Bethel, Quilliam Bethel, Raven Bethel and one on the way and significant other, Michael Raymer, Great Bend.

John Roland “Jack” Bergren, 94, died September 19, 2021, at Country Place Senior Living, Hoisington. He was born October 13, 1926, in Severy, Kansas, the son of Reuben John and Muriel Dorothy (Johnson) Bergren. He graduated from Kiowa High School in 1944.

On March 23, 1951, he married Eva Lavern Robison. They later divorced. He then married Wilma Darlene Huffman Ricke on May 23, 1951.

A resident of Hoisington since 1981 coming from Kiowa, he was a telephone service technician for Western Power and Telephone and later owner of Bergren Telephone Company.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Darlene Bergren of the home; three children, Joni Lynette Sterling and husband Steve of Alva, Oklahoma, Lori Annette Campbell and husband Kevin of Arkansas City, and Kerry John Bergren of Wichita; four stepdaughters, Crista McMillin, Teresa Scott and husband Bruce, Kathy Lynch, and Terri Davis and husband Brian; three granddaughters, Darbi Lynn Hinde, Kianne Lee Campbell, and Kacee Annette Campbell; one grandson, Brandt Steven Sterling; and two great-grandchildren, Sawyer Sterling Hinde and Lincoln Calvin Hinde; and 16 step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers LaVern and Dwight Bergren.

Visitation will be Tuesday and Wednesday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., with family to receive friends from 6 - 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m., Thursday, September 23, 2021, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Hoisington Cemetery.

Susan Jane Rosenbach, 74, of Dannebrog, Nebraska, passed away September 
15, 2021 with her family by her side, at Grand Island Regional Medical 
Center after a short, hard-fought battle with cancer. Celebration 
of life service will be 10:30 AM Thursday, September 23rd at All Faiths 
Funeral Home in Grand Island. Daniel Naranjo will officiate.

 Susan’s family will be greeting friends an hour before service time.

 Susan was born on January 13, 1947, in Great Bend, Kansas, to LC (Bud) 
and Josephine (Seeger) Pryor. She grew up in Great Bend and was a proud 
graduate of the class of 1965. She continued her education and graduated
 from Fort Hays State University in 1972. She was united in 
marriage to Gary Rosenbach on January 6, 1973. Throughout their marriage
 they lived in several cities and states before moving to her favorite 
location, the farm near Dannebrog. This is where all of her 
passions truly thrived. She was able to share her love of animals, 
especially horses, with her daughters. She spent countless hours sitting
 through riding lessons, going to horse show, and just watching them 
ride. Susan always believed in giving back and served as the Chairperson
 for the Nebraska State 4-H Horse Exposition for many years. Susan 
loved gardening and could get any plant to thrive. She is well-known for
 her floral quality sunflowers and extraordinary garlic and shallots. 
She was even dubbed the “garlic queen.” Susan brought much of her 
produce into the kitchen where she could turn anything into a gourmet 
meal. There wasn’t anything she couldn’t make. She was an avid 
quilter and you could often find her at her machine working on a new 
pattern. She was extremely precise and never started a project without 
reading all the directions first. Some of her favorite quilts were the 
two she made with her grandson. For the last twenty years, she 
worked at Stuhr Museum teaching classes for the education department. 
She truly loved interacting with and teaching kids about what it was 
like to live in the 1890’s. She often said she was going to retire, only
 to say, “well maybe I’ll teach one more time.” Those left to 
cherish her memory are her husband Gary of Dannebrog; two daughters, 
Jamee (Jeff) Bockerman of Hastings and Allison Rosenbach of Grand 
Island; grandsons Brodyn, Hadyn and Hudsyn Bockerman; sister Jody Zink 
of Pratt, Kansas; and niece Hayley Zink of Turon, Kansas. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her in-laws.

 Karen Maxine (Marlett Wilhite) Hall, 76, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, September 16th, 2021, at Diversicare of Hutchinson.

Karen was such a pure and sweet soul. She always maintained a gracious forgiving spirit, even after enduring some cruel blows in life. In this way especially she was a role model to her children and others. Karen endeavored to love others the way her savior, Jesus Christ, loved her.

Karen had many fond memories of her childhood with her “Granny”, parents, brothers, Marlett, Durler, and Kirchgassner cousins, and friends. She talked a lot about loving her dolls, short-haired terrier Trixie, a pogo-stick, a phone in her room, riding horses, and her dear housekeeper, Annabelle. And the family has a treasure-trove of pictures as evidence.

She also loved life and as a beautiful teen, Karen was known for “dragging the gut” in Larned, watching Elvis Presley movies, getting into mischief with her closest friends and cousins, and riding her horse “Poco EP” (Elvis Presley).

Karen surely loved her family and friends. In late 2019 she was asked what made her happiest in life, and Karen said it was her four children and her beloved devoted husband Judd. She said that Judd always took really good care of her, and for all the years after his passing she pined to be reunited with him in Heaven. The Lord has now made that reunion happen.

Karen was born September 5, 1945, in Larned, the daughter of Lawrence Elwood “L.E.” “Mick” and Alma Maxine Smeltzer Marlett. A lifetime area resident, she worked from 1960 through 1980 at A&amp;W restaurant, Ritzman’s pharmacy, Larned State Hospital, and T’s Place restaurant.

She was a member of New Beginnings Church of the Nazarene in Larned.

On May 8, 1966, she married John A. Wilhite, they later divorced, and he passed away May 7, 2016. On November 9, 1981, she married Judge “Judd” Edgar Hall. He passed away May 11, 1995.

Survivors include two sons, Scott (Rebecca) Kirby Wilhite, Hartford, CT, Christopher (Angela) John Wilhite, Larned; two daughters, Teri (Jim) Janell (Wilhite) Thomas, Hutchinson, Cindi (David) Diane (Wilhite) Dinning, Larned, stepson, Paul Hall; eight grandchildren, Brandon Stegman, Faith Dinning, Christian Dinning, Kiley Dinning, Cami (Wilhite) Venhaus, Tanner Madden, Dalton Madden, Gage Lawrence and three great-grandchildren, Grayson, Jacob, and Abbott Venhaus.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Raymond Dean Marlett and Lawrence Vernal Marlett.

The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 22, 2021, at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel, Larned with Pastor Jack Hopkins presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Beckwith Mortuary. The family will receive visitors from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Burial will be in the Brown’s Grove Cemetery, Burdett.

Robert L. “Bob” Myers, 79, died September 16, 2021, at Ellinwood District Hospital. He was born May 1, 1942, in Belleville, Kansas. Bob graduated from Otis High School in 1960 and later received his bachelor's degree from Kansas State University.

On March 19, 1990, he married Gloria Deines in La Crosse, Kansas.

Bob was a teacher and a coach in Bird City for many years. He also enjoyed coaching basketball and football and even taught drivers education. Bob and Gloria moved to Ellinwood after his retirement in 2000, where he continued to substitute teach for schools in the surrounding area. He was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed cheering on his grandchildren in all their different sporting events.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years Gloria Myers of the home; and two daughters, Andrea Ingram and husband Jason of Hoisington, and Amy Preister and husband Steve of Andale; nine grandchildren, TiJay Unruh of Overland Park, Aurora Ingram of Wichita, Braedon Willesden of Salina, Shawn Ingram, Emma Willesden, and Marcus Ingram, all of Hoisington, Eva and Brenna Preister of Andale, and Ben Hull of Colorado.

He was preceded in death by his parents Harry P. and Emma L. (Ondrack) Schlegel and a sister Doris Bakken.

Visitation will be Monday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Tuesday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 22, 2021, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Galatia, with Rev. Wayne Baldyga presiding. Family will greet friends prior to service from 1-2 p.m. at the church.

&nbsp;Sarah Jean Kemp, 28, passed away September 16, 2021 in Larned.

She was born December 12, 1992 in Hoisington, the daughter of William Jackson Crawford and Christina Love Champ. A longtime area resident, she was a CNA at Diversicare of Larned.

She enjoyed riding horses, fishing, camping, shooting and traveling to Colorado.

On June 6, 2015, she married Dustin Edward Kemp in Manhattan, KS. He survives.

Other survivors include four children, Johnathon Kemp, Kelli Kemp, Chloe Crawford-Henkle, Conor Crawford-Henkle, all of the home; father, Bill (Megan) Crawford, Lyons; mother, Christina Champ, Hoisington; father-in-law, Kelly (Tamera) Kemp, Manhattan; mother-in-law, Beth (Wayne) Morgan, Nekoma; four brothers, Joshua, Stephen, Shane, Dakota; two sisters, Kinsley, Allison and a great-grandfather, Carl Henkle, Hutchinson.

She was preceded in death by her great grandmother, Mary Henkle and a grandmother, Doris Clark.
