
Lavina A. Hurst, age 90 years, of Great Bend, Kansas, passed away on Saturday evening, October 2, 2021 at Azria Health – Great Bend. Lavina was born on July 22, 1931 at Rosalia, Kansas to Morris Ray and Katie Parks. She was united in marriage to James Hanks Sr. on August 18, 1947 in Rockville, Maryland. Lavina lived in Kansas nearly all her life except for when she lived in Washington State from 1967 to 1973 and had been a resident of Great Bend since 1973. Lavina worked in the Plastics Department of the Fuller Brush Company in Great Bend for 25 years, retiring in 1998. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, and after moving to the nursing home in 2015 enjoyed playing bingo.
Survivors include two sons: Terry (& Darla) Hanks of Hays, Kansas and Steven (& Connie) Hanks of Arkansas City, Kansas; two daughters: Caroline (& Brad) McCune of Great Bend, Kansas and Diana Osburn of Great Bend, Kansas; 13 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and 14 great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Paul Parks Sr. of Overland Park, Kansas. Lavina was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands James Hanks Sr. in 1998 and Eugene Hurst in 2007; a son James Hanks Jr. and a daughter Angela Collier; a granddaughter Tammy Lynn Byerly and a great-grandson Pierce Edward Fitzmorris; three brothers (Don, Alvin, and Jerry) and five sisters (Iva, Lelah, Ruby, Reba, and Hester).
In accordance with Lavina’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A Graveside Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, October 7, 2021 at Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery in rural Great Bend, Kansas with Pastor Ken Gray officiating. Memorial contributions may be directed to Kindred Hospice of Hutchinson, Kansas.
