Robert W. “Bob” Cassity, 78, died October 12, 2021, at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington. He was born April 16, 1943, in Garnett, Kansas, the son of Wilmer R. “Buck” and Esther D. (Burlingham) Cassity. Bob graduated from Garnett High School in 1961 and attended Ft. Hays State College.

On December 13, 1967, he married Margie Bennett in Miami, Oklahoma.

Bob and Margie moved from Garnett to Hoisington in 1975, where they owned and operated Central Kansas Cheese Plant for many years. A jack of all trades, Bob also worked in plumbing, heating and air for A&amp;F Enterprises Inc. Most recently he was known for the Cassity Bait Shop and was a local favorite on the trade radio known as Catfish Bob.

He served for six years in the Army National Guard and was a member of the American Legion Post #48 of Garnett, Kansas. He was president of the Hoisington Little League where he also coached his boy’s teams for several years.

Bob was an animal lover, who never turned an animal away, and will be missed by his many fur babies. He was an avid gardener, fisherman, and outdoorsman. Most especially he loved his grandchildren and loved spending time with them, taking them fishing and camping, gathering nightcrawlers and telling them stories.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 54 years, Margie Cassity of the home; three sons, Kevin Cassity of Hoisington, Craig Cassity and wife Julie, and Brandon Cassity, all of Wichita; sisters, Vera Storer of Hays, and Helen Miller of Garnett; and his forever cherished grandchildren who called him “Papa”, Tyler, Tanner and wife Allie, Hannah, Cailyn and Katie.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Herman “Bud” Cassity, sisters, Jeanne Lankard and Marjorie “Tootie” Akers, and an infant sister, Nina Ruth Cassity.

Friends may sign the book now until service. There will be no viewing as cremation has taken place.

Family will greet friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, October 21st at the funeral home.

Memorial service will be 3:00 p.m., Friday, October 22, 2021, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home Chapel, with Ron Bailey and Pastor Don Fisher presiding.

Burial will be at a later date in Glenloch Cemetery, Garnett, Kansas.

Neil Wolfe Whetstone, 85, passed away at Wesley Medical Center on Oct. 12, 2021. He was born on Nov. 14, 1935 to Lester and Evelyn (Wolfe) Whetstone in Great Bend, KS. Neil was raised in Ellinwood and loved his hometown and community very much. He first worked for Pacific Gas and Electric Co. in California and Oregon and later worked for and retired from Enron Natural Gas in Bushton. He was an Army veteran and served in the Korean War. Neil was a classic car enthusiast who enjoyed spending time fixing up his 1945 Ford F-100 truck. He was a member of the Vintage Wheels Car Club in Great bend and has spent many years attending car shows bringing home numerous trophies and awards.&nbsp;

Survivors include: wife of 43 years, Claudia (Miller) Whetstone; 4 sons, Robert (Sheila) Whetstone, David Simmons, Larry (Teresa) Simmons, Jim (Janice) Simmons; 2 daughters, Rene (Steve) Bethke, Patricia Simmons; sister Nada (Dale) Swalander; 14 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren.

Pauline “Polly” Schneider, 94, died on October 8 at Riverbend Assisted Living in Great Bend, Kansas. She was born December 1, 1926 to Thomas and Hazel McDonald of Barton County in their home on the Santa Fe Trail. She married Lawrence Schneider on August 11, 1945 in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho after Lawrence finished his service to the United States Marine Corps during WWII. The two returned to Kansas to build a home and family. Her husband named her his “Domestic Engineer” in a poem about the love and care she devoted to family, farm, and home. A true farm wife, Polly could whip up a hearty meal in the morning for lunch and be out on a tractor in the afternoon. Her grandchildren can recall many a ride in wheat trucks and stops along dirt roads to deliver lemonade and cookies during wheat harvest.

Polly loved the land and its history, and her contributions to learning, recording, and passing down both extend far beyond her stories around the table. As a lifetime resident of Barton County, Polly was an active member and leader in the Fort Zarah Club for 63 years. She was a volunteer, contributor, and lifetime member of the Barton County Historical Society and Museum. Through the years she was also a member of South Bend Township Club, Santa Fe Trail Association, PTA president, and even a Campfire Girl Leader. Most recently, Polly was inducted into the Daughters of the American Revolution, Smoky Hill Chapter along with her two daughters, five granddaughters, and four great-granddaughters. She received the Sons of the American Revolution Medal of Appreciation, Martha Washington Medal, and Daughters of Liberty Medal for referring ten members to the Son of the American Revolution-her sons, four grandsons, and four great-grandsons. Two great-grandchildren were also inducted into Children of the American Revolution.

Polly’s home was always filled with good food, family, and friends. Her hobbies and interests in history helped fill her home with numerous collections of items from the past, most notably her antique irons. Polly literally had a collection for every letter, A to Z and could tell you the origin, purpose, and history of each piece. The bustling farmyard outside was host to many adventures for children and grandchildren from the “jungles” of the poppy garden to the “wild west” of the hand-crafted cabin playhouse. Polly and her husband Lawrence instilled the love of Kansas, history, learning, and creativity, a legacy that continues to live on through their family.

In the words of her late husband of 69 years, “Now this could go on forever, me bragging on my wife, but to anyone who knows her, can tell you that I’m right!” Polly was preceded in death by her husband Lawrence, parents, and many friends and family members. She is survived by her four children: Larry “Butch” Schneider, wife Marcia of Great Bend; Pamela Maresch, husband Myron of Ozona, Texas; Sally Davis, husband Matthew of Early, Texas; and Todd Schneider, wife Kim of Great Bend. She had 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.

Lee Phillip (Phil) Kern, 72, passed away at his home in Hoisington, Kansas June 29, 2021.

He was born July 9, 1948 in Great Bend, Kansas to Kenneth and Ellen Carter Kern.

A Great Bend High School and Fort Hays State University Alum, Phil was a keen businessman and entrepreneur, working in the oil industry and as a general contractor. He made his home in Salina, Kansas; Tucson, Arizona; Springdale, Arkansas; and Overland Park, Kansas until returning to the Great Bend area. He was of the Catholic faith.

Phil could almost always be found engineering a project, fine-tuning it down to the smallest detail, leaving no stone unturned. He enjoyed traveling, watching golf, spoiling his black Lab Shady, and sharing good stories and cold beer.

He is survived by his son, Clark Kern and his wife, Shari; daughters, Kimberly Kern and Katherine Shelton and her husband, Tate; ten grandchildren; sister, Mary Beth and her husband, Kenny; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Wade Patrick and Kenneth Michael Kern; and an infant granddaughter.

Memorial service will be held October 16, 2021, at 10 a.m. at Stockham Family Funeral home in McPherson, Kansas. Interment of Ashes will follow at McPherson Cemetery.

A lifetime resident of Great Bend, Ruth was a housekeeper for several families in the community. She was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and the Altar Society. She enjoyed flowers, canning, fishing, outdoor activities, and most of all spending time with her family, especially the grandkids.

Survivors include sons George Jr. (Zola) of Great Bend, Charlie (Sarah) of Bushton, and James “Jimmie” (Tiara) of Great Bend; a daughter, Theresa Weber-Herzberg (Dale) of Great Bend; sisters Charlotte Lackey, Sandy Scofield, and Pamela Davidson; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Teresa M. Dutton, age 59, of Great Bend, Kansas passed from this earthly life to Eternal Glory on Friday morning, October 8, 2021 at her home in Great Bend.&nbsp;&nbsp;Teresa was born on August 9, 1962 at Fort Worth, Texas to Bill Attwood and Patty Crawford, and grew up in Shawnee, Oklahoma and lived in Belle Plaine, Kansas and Wichita, Kansas before moving to Great Bend in 1986.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;She was united in marriage to Steven K. Dutton on July 21, 1996 at Great Bend, Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;Teresa completed the Cosmetology Program at Barton Community College and was also a licensed CNA, and her passion for helping others led to her position as Assistant Director of the CentralKansas DreamCenter in Great Bend, where she had been working for the past 7 years.&nbsp;&nbsp;She loved crafts and outdoor activities, especially kayaking, canoeing, and hiking, and dearly loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.&nbsp;&nbsp;Teresa was a longtime member of Encounter Church in Great Bend, Kansas where she was an Alumni of the Women Of Valor Discipleship Ministry.&nbsp;

Dutton on July 21, 1996 at Great Bend, Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;Teresa completed the Cosmetology Program at Barton Community College and was also a licensed CNA, and her passion for helping others led to her position as Assistant Director of the CentralKansas DreamCenter in Great Bend, where she had been working for the past 7 years.&nbsp;&nbsp;She loved crafts and outdoor activities, especially kayaking, canoeing, and hiking, and dearly loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.&nbsp;&nbsp;Teresa was a longtime member of Encounter Church in Great Bend, Kansas where she was an Alumni of the Women Of Valor Discipleship Ministry.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Survivors include her husband, Steven K. Cindy Ann Grant, 59, passed away October 1, 2021, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas; after a courageous battle with breast cancer.

Cindy was born December 30, 1961 to Nealan and Mary Ann Fox. On December 19, 1981 she married Leonard Grant. Together, they had three children, Kelly, Kylee and Kyle. Raising her children and following all of their activities was Cindy’s absolute pride and joy. She dedicated her life to supporting them and traveled many miles chauffeuring them to their activities. She was a proud graduate of Fort Hays State University and bled purple for her K-State Wildcats.

A lifetime area resident, Cindy was very proud to do all the jobs on the family farm. She also worked as a substitute teacher for over 30 years at USD 495. She was also a member of the Larned United Methodist Church. Anyone who knew Cindy knew that she had a huge heart for volunteering. Whether it be tending to the community garden for Larned Civic Pride, working the budget shop for the United Methodist Women or volunteering as a project leader for 4-H, Cindy was involved with many aspects of her community. She was also active in the Laurete Beta Nu chapter of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority and the Larned Garden Club. She also enjoyed judging many projects at the area county 4-H fairs.

Survivors include; husband, Leonard, daughter Kelly, husband Sean and granddaughter Kassidy of Eldora, Iowa, daughter Kylee of Kansas City, Missouri and son, Kyle of Larned. Also left to cherish her memory are many special aunts, uncles and cousins, who were more like siblings to her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Nealan and Mary Ann Fox and grandparents Earl and Thelma Fox and Pete and Hilda Penka.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 27, 2021 at the Larned United Methodist Church, with Pastor Tricia North presiding. David B. Urban, 54, passed away October 8, 2021, at his home in Great Bend. He was born on October 25, 1966, at LaCrosse, to Bendedict &amp; Frances (Schaffer) Urban. He married Debbie Allen on October 6, 2001, at Great Bend.

A lifetime Great Bend resident, David was a rig operator for JD's Well Service. He was a member of Prince of Peace Parish. David enjoyed cooking, watching racing, camping and was a die-hard Pittsburgh Steelers fan. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Debbie Urban of the home; two daughters, Jerica Urban of the home, and Jenna Pitchford and fiancé Sasha of Great Bend; two sons, Josh Pitchford and wife Sheila of Ellinwood, and Jeremy Pitchford and wife Jalissa of Loma, Colo; a brother, Darrel Urban and wife Susan of Bison; two sisters, Darletha "Dar" Zimmerman and husband Duane of Springfield, Mo., and Diane Parker and husband Barry of Great Bend; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; twin sons, Derreck and Devin Urban, and another son, Dexter Urban.

Judy Kay Zamarripa, 73, of Duncan, Oklahoma, passed away after an 8-year battle with lung cancer on September 23, 2021, surrounded by her family. She was born June 28, 1948, in Scottsbluff, Nebraska to Albert and Marcena (Labbe) Nagel. 

Judy married Steven Zamarripa on September 19, 1970, in Great Bend, Kansas. To their union, they added three daughters - Karie, Kelly and Kacy. She graduated from Great Bend High School in 1966 where she wowed sports fans being the school mascot. That will come as no surprise to anyone who knew her. She was the life of the party everywhere she went. She loved the yearly Zamarripa family reunions and was generally found right in the middle of things dancing around. She never shied away from hard work, first as a beautician, then opening her own cleaning service and, finally, working in the Central Office for Duncan Public Schools. Her most prized role was as Mom to her three girls and the best Gaga in the world to her grandkids. 

Judy is survived by her husband of 51 years, Steven; children: Karie Jo and husband Charles W. Carpenter of Piedmont, Kelly Ann and husband Bryan Merritt of Chickasha, Kacy Lynn and husband James Popham of Duncan; grandchildren: Mackenzie and Kyle McKnight, Kendall Carpenter, Kaylen Merritt, Laney Merritt, Avery Popham, Emery Popham, Tyson Popham; sister, Susan and Lee Major; brothers, David Nagel and Gary Nagel; sisters-in-law: Carmen Skelly, Mary Ingram, Rose and Lonnie Sands, Josie and Dennis Morrison, Isabell and Don Eargood, Angie Ingram, Becky Morrison, Vivian Bahr; brother-in-law, Paul and Gina Zamarripa; and many nieces and nephews. Coming to Great Bend from Larned in 2000, Michelle was of the Catholic faith. She was a member of St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Florence, Colo.

Survivors include her brother, Michael Boisse (Sheri Williams) of Great Bend. She was preceded in death by her parents; and an infant sister, Mikeala Boisse.

William Eugene “Bill” Polzin, 74, died October 4, 2021, at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington, with his wife Christine at his side, along with many wonderful doctors and nurses. He was born June 9, 1947, in Hoisington, the son of Matt and Irene (Reif) Polzin.

Bill was a longtime resident of Hoisington. He worked in Kansas City, Missouri for several years before coming back to Hoisington where he was employed and retired from Great Bend CO-OP. Bill served in the United States Army and was a member of the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and the V.F.W.

Survivors include; his wife Christine of the home; stepdaughter, Robyn Dodge; step-son, Clayton Van Brimmer; and daughter of the heart, Christi Henry, all of Hoisington; brother-in-law, Cliff Bieberle of Great Bend; brother, Ron Polzin and wife Carol of Hoisington; sister, Maxine Olivier and husband Larry of Danville, Kansas; grandchildren, Zander Strandberg, Ava Henry, Grayson Strandberg, Elli Van Brimmer, Trae Van Brimmer, Jaxson Henry, Autumn Dodge, and Tommy Van Brimmer.

James Daniel Kohl(Dan), age 56, of Schoenchen, KS died Sunday, October 3, 2021. He was born June 14, 1965 in Hays, KS to James Kohl and Doris (Herrman) Winslow. He married Tina (Mask) in Hays, KS on June 14, 1996. Dan always had a smile on his face. He was one of those people that everyone loved. He was genuinely genuine. Dan didn’t have secrets. He wasn’t two-faced. What you saw is what you got. Dan was a genuine person inside and out. Dan was a patient person and always gave people the benefit of the doubt. He was honest, generous, and kind to everyone. He was devoted to God and volunteered at his church whenever they needed an extra set of hands. Family meant the world to Dan. He loved telling everyone about his kids. He was immensely proud of them and all of his family. He oftentimes would go out of his way to be an integral part of family gatherings and made sure to keep in touch with family near and far. Dan was a devoted father and husband. He married his first true love, Tina. He cherished spending time with his son Russ and daughter Faith, and Dan’s best friends were his brothers. Dan was thrilled to host family gatherings at his home. When his house was no longer big enough to host the family, he bought a bigger house! In fact, he was in the midst of expanding the current home to accommodate his ever-expanding circle of close friends and family. Dan was the common link between his close and extended family. If someone needed a phone number or reminded of a family link or the name of a distant cousin or even someone’s birthday… He always had it. Dan took on a deep interest in genealogy and actively sought to learn family history and connect with cousins who are generations removed. Dan was always well-grounded. He didn’t take unnecessary risks. He didn’t borrow big chunks of money or use credit cards to buy this or that. He lived within his means. Dan always did his best to provide for his family, made sure to share in household chores, and undertook projects to improve the house as he could find time. Dan graduated from TMP-Marian in 1984, then studied and completed his certificate to operate heavy equipment at North Central Kansas Area VoTech in Beloit, KS. He then worked as a machinist building components for hydraulic pumps and cylinders at Cross Manufacturing in Hays for 36 years. He was an immensely hard worker and was unmatched in effort, commitment, determination, and loyalty. Dan was a lifelong fan of the Chiefs and Royals, even during the lean years. Whether it was the annual journey to Kansas City for the Chiefs or at the local school to see nieces and nephews playing, Dan enjoyed attending sporting events. He recently started a love affair with travel, having taken the entire family to Ireland and then the Grand Canyon the following year. Dan also enjoyed going to the gym. He worked hard to push himself to improve his times and overall fitness. Dan had plans for the next chapters of his life. Travel. Watching his kids start their next chapters. Spending more time with Tina and sharing her next chapters. Dan will be missed by many. He married Tina (Mask) in Hays, KS on June 14, 1996. Dan always had a smile on his face. He was one of those people that everyone loved. He was genuinely genuine. Dan didn’t have secrets. He wasn’t two-faced. What you saw is what you got. Dan was a genuine person inside and out. Dan was a patient person and always gave people the benefit of the doubt. He was honest, generous, and kind to everyone. He was devoted to God and volunteered at his church whenever they needed an extra set of hands. Family meant the world to Dan. He loved telling everyone about his kids. He was immensely proud of them and all of his family. He oftentimes would go out of his way to be an integral part of family gatherings and made sure to keep in touch with family near and far. Dan was a devoted father and husband. He married his first true love, Tina. He cherished spending time with his son Russ and daughter Faith, and Dan’s best friends were his brothers. Dan was thrilled to host family gatherings at his home. When his house was no longer big enough to host the family, he bought a bigger house! In fact, he was in the midst of expanding the current home to accommodate his ever-expanding circle of close friends and family. Dan was the common link between his close and extended family. If someone needed a phone number or reminded of a family link or the name of a distant cousin or even someone’s birthday… He always had it. Dan took on a deep interest in genealogy and actively sought to learn family history and connect with cousins who are generations removed. Dan was always well-grounded.  James Daniel Kohl

Michael Lee Schneider passed away peacefully on October 1, 2021, at his 
rural home in Collyer, KS, at the age of 67. He was born on February 11,
 1954, to Bernhardt and Viola Edna (Wilhelm) Schneider in WaKeeney, KS. 
Michael married Kathleen Ann “Kathy” Wright on August 11, 1973, in 
Atwood, KS. They were blessed with six children: Adam, Tate, Kahl, 
Chauncy, Becky, and Mary.
 Mike grew up on the family farm in Trego County and attended Trego 
County schools until his senior year. In his 40’s he got his GED. He 
worked for Ideal Ind. as a welder. After getting married he worked for 
WaKeeney Reid Mix. Then the family moved to Bird City, KS where he 
worked for a large farmer. In 1979 they moved back to the family farm 
where he built the family home. He was a dedicated farmer raising hogs, 
cattle, and crops. He was a skilled carpenter, mechanic, welder, and a 
talented storyteller. He loved riding the motorcycle and once each year 
he and Kathy would take off for parts unknown. He called this their 
marriage counseling. He enjoyed fishing, snow skiing, boating, and 
playing cards with the neighbors. Grandkids brought out a whole new side
 of him; they were his world.
 Mike was a rural member of the Trego County Volunteer Fire Department and the WaKeeney Church of God.
 Left to cherish Mike’s memory are his wife, Kathy of the home in 
Trego County; children, Adam (Janelle) Schneider of Goshen, KY, Kahl 
(Heather) Schneider of Adair, IA, Chauncy Schneider of WaKeeney, KS,

Lavina A. Hurst, age 90 years, of&nbsp;Great Bend,&nbsp;Kansas, passed away on Saturday evening, October 2, 2021 at Azria Health –&nbsp;Great Bend.&nbsp;&nbsp;Lavina was born on July 22, 1931 at&nbsp;Rosalia,&nbsp;Kansas&nbsp;to Morris Ray and Katie Parks.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was united in marriage to James Hanks Sr. on August 18, 1947 in&nbsp;Rockville,&nbsp;Maryland.&nbsp;&nbsp;Lavina lived in&nbsp;Kansas&nbsp;nearly all her life except for when she lived in&nbsp;Washington State&nbsp;from 1967 to 1973 and had been a resident of&nbsp;Great Bend&nbsp;since 1973.&nbsp;&nbsp;Lavina worked in the Plastics Department of the Fuller Brush Company in&nbsp;Great Bend&nbsp;for 25 years, retiring in 1998.&nbsp;&nbsp;She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, and after moving to the nursing home in 2015 enjoyed playing bingo.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

Ron worked as an insurance agent for Metlife, farmer/rancher, over the road industrial trucker, and ran a custom cutting hay business.&nbsp; He was a resident of Ellinwood for 2 years and he cherished time spent with his kids and grandchildren. His hobbies included playing cards (especially pitch),&nbsp;attending horse shows, and hunting.&nbsp;His passion was showing Arabian horses.

Brian was born on December 2nd, 1959, in Ellinwood, Kansas to Mark and Betty Schartz. He grew up on the family farms in Ellinwood and Cimarron, Kansas. He graduated from Cimarron High School in 1977.

Brian was a hard worker and was engaged in farming his entire life. He loved taking his grandkids on the tractor any chance he could. Brian was a friend to many and will truly be missed.

Survivors include two daughters, Stacey McGinley, Wichita and Megan Schartz, Dodge City; two brothers, David Schartz, Garden City and Stephen (Sara) Schartz, Cimarron; four sisters, Marian Reynolds, Pittsburg, Donna Woods, Cimarron, Bernice (David) Rebein, Dodge City and Rita (Bill) Hommertzheim, Cimarron; one sister-in-law, Pam Schartz, Corinth, TX; three grandchildren, Mason, Alyjah and Austin; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Kevin Martin, 65, died October 1, 2021, at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington, Kansas. He was born August 1, 1956, in Hoisington, the son of Harry “H.O.” and Esther (Howell) Martin.

On April 2, 1981, he married Laura E. Jones in Great Bend. She survives.

A lifetime Hoisington resident, Kevin worked in the oil field for Duke Drilling. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Laura Martin; two sons, Neal Martin of Seattle, Washington and Clinton Martin of Hoisington; six siblings, Jeanie Donovan and husband LeRoy of Hoisington, Mike Martin and wife Nancy of Pratt, Doug Martin and wife Jan of Larned, Debbie Martin of Manhattan, Gary Martin and Cindy Martin both of Great Bend; two grandchildren, Logan and Bailee Martin; and a beloved dog, Sophie.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Martha Knight and Becky Booth.

Memorial service will be 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 5, 2021, at the Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Don Fisher presiding. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and until service on Tuesday. There will be no viewing as cremation has taken place.

Fern V. Walls, 93, died September 30, 2021, at the Parsons Presbyterian Manor. She was born September 11, 1928, in Topsy, Oklahoma, the daughter of Mark Edward and Velma (West) Barnwell. She graduated from Jay High School, Jay, Oklahoma.

On April 17, 1948, she married Charles R. “Jiggs” Walls in Topsy, Oklahoma. He preceded her in death on May 17, 2008.

Charles and Fern were residents of Bushton for 50 years before moving to Parsons in 2003. Fern was active in the Bushton community in many different ways, including being on the City Council for several years. She worked part-time at the local IGA grocery store, and volunteered at the food bank. Deep in her faith, Fern was a member of the United Methodist Church where she participated in Bible study and volunteered in numerous ways. She loved to crochet and was noted for her talents in it. Fern was very active at Presbyterian Manor in Parsons, Kansas. She was a resident member of the Manor’s council, started a walking club, attended church services, won a craft award with her crochet, and made many great friends and was loved by many there.

A loving mother and grandmother, she is survived by her two children; a son, DeWayne Walls of Ellinwood, and a daughter, Brenda Butler and husband Keith of Parsons; 4 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, 3 step-granddaughters, 7 step-great-grandchildren, 7 step great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a daughter, Gail Walls, a daughter-in-law, Geraldine Walls; and four sisters and two brothers.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, October 9, 2021, at the United Methodist Church, Bushton, Kansas, with Pastor Diana Webster presiding. Family will greet friends from 9:30 a.m. until service. Burial will follow in Bushton Cemetery.

Mary Joanita Doll-Masden, 80, passed away on Sept. 30, 2021 at Ellinwood District Hospital in Ellinwood, KS. Jo was born on Oct. 11, 1940 in Wichita, KS to parents Nick and Clarice (Tuttle) Triplett. She graduated from Ellinwood High in 1958 later marrying Darryl Doll on Sept. 20, 1958 at St. Peter &amp; Paul Church they were married 30 years. From this union there were 4 children Pamela (David) Boxberger, Silver Lake, KS, Michele Doll, Wichita, KS, Kimberly (Troy) Berens, Lee's Summit, MO; and son, Darren Doll, Wichita, KS. Darryl died tragically on Oct. 1, 1988. Jo later married Dale Masden of Ellinwood, KS at St. Joseph Church on Oct. 16, 1993. They were married for 28 years, he survives of the home. Additional survivors include daughters, Christine (James) Ginns, Kansas City, MO and Julie (Tristin) Riley, Casper, WY; sons, Larry Dale Masden, Kansas City, MO; 7 grandchildren, Aubrey Jo, Tyler, Payton, Conner, Olivia, Sophie &amp; Tristyn, and 6 great-grandchildren, Kaeson, Kenadi, Kelton, Kolter, Bryson, &amp; Brody. Joanita was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Darryl Doll; sister, Sue Duft; and daughter, Pamela Boxberger.

Memberships include St. Joseph Catholic Church/Altar Society, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Ellinwood Historical Society, Bridge Club, and was a charter member of the Tri Circle Club. Joanita worked as an area consultant for the library for over 20 years before retirement. She loved Christmas time, traveling, card games with friends and family, and cherished time with her grandchildren.

Funeral Mass will take place at 10:30 AM, Tues., Oct. 5, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ellinwood, KS with Father Terrance Klein officiating. Interment will follow at Lakin-Comanche Cemetery in Ellinwood. Visitation will take place Mon., Oct. 4, from Noon-6 PM with Altar Society Rosary at 3 PM at Minnis Chapel in Ellinwood.
