Denton Ralph “Rip” Schlegel, 78, passed away on July 31, 2023, at Azria Health, Great Bend, Kansas. He was born on June 20, 1945, at Hoisington, Kansas, to Ralph &amp; Carrie (Gustin) Schlegel. On October 27, 1973, he married Linda Monroe at Hoisington, Kansas. She died November 28, 2010.

Mr. Schlegel was a lifetime resident of Barton County. He was a 1963 graduate of Otis High School. During his time in high school, he earned the nickname “Rip” for how he would rip the nets from basketball goals and make three-point shots before they were a common shot made. Denton worked as a machinist at Great Bend Industries for over 30 years. When he wasn’t mowing yards or being directed in life by Linda and Glen, he enjoyed polka dances and loved going to Las Vegas.

Survivors include sister-in-law, Jeannette (Ken) Clark of Shawnee; nieces and nephews; and many friends.

Denton is preceded in death by his wife; brother and sister-in-law, Curtis and Wanda Schlegel; his parents; and his parents-in-law, Glen and Rosemary Monroe

Friends may sign the book noon to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 9, 2023, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home.

Memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, August 10, 2023, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home with Ron Bailey presiding. Inurnment will follow at Hoisington Cemetery.

Billy George Akin-Summers, age 59 of Garfield, Kansas passed away on Saturday evening, July 29, 2023 at his home after a long battle with COPD and Congestive Heart Failure.&nbsp; Billy was born on October 31, 1963 to Elvis McFarland and Loretta Yocham in Vian, Oklahoma.&nbsp; His mother later married Elmer Akin, who adopted Billy.&nbsp; Billy belonged to a large family of 12 sisters and 8 brothers:&nbsp; Marylou, John, and James (&amp; Leslie) of Arkansas; Gladys, Edna (&amp; Jim), Tracy, Doug (&amp; Lori), and Les of Kansas; Betty (&amp; Dan), Bea (&amp; Neev), Ethel, Lisa (&amp; John), Don, and Jesse (&amp; Kim) of Oklahoma.

&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Billy made a living by hanging drywall, roofing, and did some truck driving. He was known to be a jokester and often made up names to make you laugh.

Billy married Sandra Hill in 1992.&nbsp; In July of 1992 they welcomed a daughter Sandeana. As years passed, they later divorced.

In 2008, Billy and Susan started dating and later married on May 12, 2018 at Ottawa, Kansas. This marriage was blessed with four boys:&nbsp; Shawn, David, Jason, and Zackhary; and three brothers-in-law: Rick, Steve (&amp; Dena), and Chris (&amp; Clarissa).

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Billy has eighteen beautiful grandchildren:&nbsp; Cameron, Jordyn, Jolynn, Astrid, Jazzmine, Gavin, Jayden, Dayton, Dakota, Alexa, Kayleen, Jordan, Zayden, James, Jame-Lynn, Kayson, William and Asuna. Plus, there are many nieces and nephews. Billy was a big family man and loved them all. Billy also had three good friends he could count on in Loren, Jody, and Shelly.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Billy had a passion for writing songs, singing, and playing the guitar. He loved entertaining not only his family with his talent but would also go to the nursing homes and share his love for music with the elderly.&nbsp; Billy also enjoyed fishing and was a die-hard Kansas City Chiefs fan.&nbsp; One of his fondest memories is watching the Chiefs game with Sue, Zack, and Dakota and seeing who would cuss and scream the loudest.

Billy was preceded in death by his parents and siblings (Ruby, Billie June, Barbara, Wendy, Edward, William, and Roy); son Zackhary and grandchildren Astrid and Jame-Lynn.

Gina Ann (Ellis) Gugins, age 49 years, of Kinsley and formerly of Great Bend, passed away in&nbsp; Haven on Thursday afternoon, July 27, 2023.&nbsp; Gina was born on June 24, 1974, in Great Bend to Gary Ray and Clara May (Roach) Ellis. She was a graduate of Great Bend High School and then went on to become a Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) and worked for a period of time at Cherry Village Long Term Care in Great Bend. She was united in marriage to Gary L. Gugins on May 22, 2010, in Great Bend. Gina loved baking cookies and candy, enjoyed surfing the Internet, and loved watching her purple martin birds outside her home. She also dearly loved her three dogs and her cat.

Survivors include her husband, Gary L. Gugins of Kinsley; her father Gary R. Ellis of Great Bend; two brothers:&nbsp; Brian and Brent Ellis, both of Great Bend; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother Clara May Ellis on Jan. 1, 2013.

Crawford, Sr., age 69, lifelong Great Bend resident, passed away on Tuesday afternoon, July 25, 2023, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.&nbsp; David was born on Sept. 4, 1953, in Great Bend to Melva Jean and Andrew J. Crawford Sr., and graduated from Great Bend High School.&nbsp; He was united in marriage to Patricia Chain on Aug. 8, 2007, at Newkirk, Okla.&nbsp; David was self-employed as an appliance technician for many years. He was of the Christian faith and was a former member of the Sidewinders, a member of American Legion Riders Post #180 of Great Bend, a member of the Sons of the American Legion, and Founder of High On Life Recovery Center with over 40 years in recovery.&nbsp; David loved motorcycles and recovery.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia A. “Patty” Crawford of Great Bend; two sons Daniel Ryan and David Crawford, Jr.; five daughters:&nbsp; Amanda Crawford, Tamara Dauber, Dana Burk, Michelle Laham, and Brenda Holden; 22 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; three brothers:&nbsp; Andrew Crawford Jr. (&amp; Diana), Steve (&amp; Marcia) Crawford, and Kenneth Crawford; and three sisters: Judy Vasquez, Betty Adams, and Sue (&amp; David) Schridde. David Crawford, Sr., age 69

Morgan D. “Smitty” Smith, 92, passed away on July 27, 2023, surrounded by his family at Credo Senior Living, Hoisington, Kansas. He was born on January 2, 1931, in Lawton, Oklahoma, the son of John P. and Pauline (Swann) Smith.

On June 2, 1956, he married Norma L. Whitsel at First Christian Church in Great Bend, Kansas. She died October 20, 2021.

Mr. Smith was a resident of Hoisington for 60 years, coming from Lawton, Oklahoma, and Great Bend. He was the owner and operator of Smith Acid Company. Morgan was a member of the First Christian Church of Great Bend and V.F.W. He enjoyed hunting, painting portraits and landscapes, tinkering with watches and guns, and gardening. His family was left with his many examples and lessons of the importance of a strong work ethic and a giving, charitable nature.

Survivors include five children, Michael D. (Debbie) Smith of Hoisington, Randall D. Smith of Fort Worth, Texas, Sabrina (Oscar) Mariño of Lawrence, Sonya (Wayde) Brozek of Wamego, and Kevin (Jennifer) Smith of Lee's Summit, Missouri; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren, with one on the way.

He is preceded in death by his wife; Norma; his parents; and siblings, Gloria Guyselman, Marie Yarmuk, and Paul Smith.

Patricia Claire Burnett, 95, passed away July 28, 2023, at Rice County District Hospital, Lyons, Kan. She was born March 27, 1928, in St. Paul, Minn. to Fred and Barbara (Vonesh) Campbell. She married Abram Burnett, IV, in Wichita on June 23, 1946. He died May 16, 1999.

A current Great Bend resident, coming from Timken, Salina and Wichita, Patricia a house cleaner, a cook for several restaurants in Timken and La Crosse, and worked for Jr’s Cleaners in Wichita. She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Timken and Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, as well as the Altar Society. When Patricia was younger, she enjoyed bowling. She was a gifted seamstress and loved her cats.

Survivors include, two sons, Mike Burnett and wife Barbara of Wichita, and Patrick Burnett and wife Lyndsay of Great Bend; two daughters, Sue Parks of husband Bobby of Wichita, and Barbara Powers and husband Alvin of Salina; seven grandchildren, Jeremy Burnett, Damean Burnett, Nowa Stueve, Allison Parks, Ashley Bowers, Sydney Kruckenberg and Keaton Kruckenberg; several great grandchildren; and one great great granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Abram.; and a grandson, Abram Parks.

Patricia Burnett, age 95

Richard Braun, 72, passed away July 13, 2023, at Hays Medical Center, Hays.

He was born Dec. 6, 1950, in Hays, the son of Andrew E. and Matilda Dreher Braun. A longtime area resident; he was an Oil Field Pumper.

He enjoyed farming with his father, and model cars. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post #1751 in Victoria and a member of the American Legion Post #173 in Hays.

Richard Braun, age 72

Dennis Vernon Klima, age 71, was welcomed by his Lord and Savior, on July 25, 2023, after a work related accident. He was born September 9, 1951, in Sterling, Kansas. He was the first born to Vernon and Lavina Mae (Belote) Klima. He grew up in Claflin, Kansas and graduated from Claflin High School in 1970.

Dennis married his sweetheart, Rhonda Clinkscales, on August 1, 1976, in Holyrood, Kansas, in the presence of their family at the residence of a friend. To their union, they welcomed a son, David Klima, daughter, Laura Klima-Fehr, and their youngest son, Jordan Klima.

Dennis and his wife, Rhonda, have lived in Great Bend since 1999. Dennis was an active member of Grace Community Church, and was a known as a man of godly character amongst his friends, community members, and those who worked with him in the oil patch. His faith meant everything thing to him, and those around him could always expect to hear a Bible verse or word of encouragement from Dennis. He enjoyed attending Adult Bible Fellowship and weekly men’s prayer meetings. His family knew that they could find him up early reading his Bible or on his knees in prayer before going to work for the day.

Dennis worked in the oil industry for over 46 years, owning Klima Well Service for over 42 years. He was known amongst his peers for his knowledge of the business and his hard work ethic. The dedication to his business was a character trait that all of his children also possess and they take pride in carrying on the legacy of hard work their father displayed.

Dennis was a loving husband and proud father &amp; grandfather, who enjoyed nothing more than spending time with his family. They will remember his servant-heart, silly nicknames, and love of Hallmark Movies.

Klima was survived by his wife, Rhonda (Clinkscales) Klima, children: David (Misty) of Boise, Idaho, Laura (Matt) of Kansas City, Kansas, and Jordan (Natalie) of Hays, Kansas; grandchildren: Macey, Micah, Maxson, and Mavery; and siblings, Donna Briggeman, Gary Klima, Vera Blair, Sherry Siemsen, Ernest Klima, and Jim Klima. Dennis was proceeded in death by his parents, Vernon and Lavina Mae (Belote) Klima.

She was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church in Great Bend, Eagles Club, and Sunflower Polka Club. Vera enjoyed dancing, painting, playing cards and slot machines.

Survivors include, her husband, Alvin Muth of the home; a daughter, Denise Appel and husband Rich of Rush Center; a son, Darren Muth and wife Ruth of Longmont, Colo.; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Dianna Lynn Muth; two brothers, LeRoy Korte and Clay Korte; and three sisters, Viola Merwin, Violet Korte and Joy Cooper.

Vera Muth, age 89

Floyd Charles Tuzicka, 85, of Russell, and formerly of Hoisington and Olmitz, passed away Monday morning, July 24, 2023, at the Russell Regional Hospital.

Floyd was born April 25, 1938 in rural Olmitz. He was the son of Charles George and Barbara Janice (Dome) Tuzicka. He grew up in Hoisington and attended Hoisington schools.

Floyd served his country in the U.S. Army. He was stationed in Beirut and Lebanon. After his tour was done, he returned to the Olmitz area.

Floyd was united in marriage to Clara Constance “Connie” Hewitt on Nov. 17, 1963, in Medicine Lodge. They made their home in Olmitz. They moved to the Russell area the last couple of years.

Floyd worked for Red Tiger in the oilfields. He was a member of the St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Olmitz and later St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Russell. He was a fourth-degree Knight of Columbus. He was a past Commander of the VFW Post in Hoisington and later joined the VFW Post 6240 in Russell. He enjoyed hunting, especially bird hunting, fishing, and gardening.

Floyd is survived by his wife of 59 years, Connie of the home. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Orville Tuzicka.

Celebration of the Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 27, 2023, at St. Mary, Queen of Angels Catholic Church of Russell. Graveside Service will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, at the St. Ann’s Catholic Cemetery in Olmitz, where the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240 Honor Guard will conduct Military Rites. Deborah A. “Debbie” Jimison, 66, died July 19, 2023, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, Kansas. She was born August 18, 1956, in Ellinwood, Kansas, the daughter of Gene and Marietta (Bieberle) Mooney. Debbie graduated from Bushton High School in 1975.

On August 23, 1975, she maried Kyle M. Jimison in Bushton, Kansas.

A lifetime Bushton resident, Debbie worked for Wal-Mart, Dollar General and most recently The Thunderbird Center in Bushton retiring in December of 2022. Debbie enjoyed her work in retail as she could talk to anyone. Her family describes her as the rock of the family, always caring for everyone. They fondly remember her great cooking and baking skills, especially her mashed potatoes, potato salad, mac and cheese, oven baked spaghetti and her homemade bierocks, to name a few. Besides cooking Debbie enjoyed coloring, word search puzzles, and cross-stich.

She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Kyle M. Jimison of the home; two sons, Chad Jimison and wife Misty of Clearwater and Jermy Jimison of Little River; three grandchildren, Taylor Jimison of Ellsworth, Daxton Jimison, and Tymberlin Jimison both of Clearwater; two brothers, Roy Mooney and wife Joyce, and Floy Mooney, all of Bushton.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Helen Mooney.

Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, July 28, 2023, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home Chapel. Inurnment service will follow at Holy Name Cemetery, rural Bushton, Kansas. Friends may sign the book only as cremation has taken place.

Barbara Janelle Gregory, 86, passed away July 20, 2023, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, Lawrence, Kan. She was born on June 23, 1937, at Ellinwood, to Gottfried &amp; Marie (Winter) Miller. She married Frank W. Gregory on October 31, 1954, at Ellinwood. He died December 4, 1990.

A recent resident of Lawrence, Barbara was formerly of Great Bend, Hoisington, Ellinwood, Hoxie and Garden City. She worked in housekeeping at CKMC for many years and a former member of St. John Lutheran Church in Ellinwood. Barbara enjoyed crocheting, and word search puzzles.

Survivors include, two sons, Wayne Gregory and wife Joyce of Hillsdale, Kan., and David Gregory and wife Brenda of Burlington, Colo.; a daughter, Brenda Sekavec and husband Dale of Lawrence; a brother, Richard “Dick” Miller and wife Dorothy of Great Bend; seven grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; and three great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Frank; an infant son, Danny J. Gregory; two brothers, Gottfied Miller and Robert Miller; and three sisters, Alvera Miller, Lydia Ailshie and Emma Beardslee.

Carolann Morrison, age 89, of Great Bend, Kansas passed away Monday afternoon, July 17, 2023 at The University of Kansas Health System - Great Bend Campus.&nbsp; Carolann (a.k.a. Carol Ann) was born in Great Bend, Kansas on August 19,1933 to Ethel Marie (Milberger) and Judson T. Bradford. At an early age her father died in an oil field accident.&nbsp; A few years later, her widowed mother and John S. “Jack” Morrison were united in marriage. It was then she was adopted by Jack Morrison.

Carolann went to elementary through high school in Great Bend, Kansas graduating in 1951. During part of her high school years, she wrote a column for the Great Bend Tribune called Teen Talk. After graduating, she attended Kansas University and St. Mary of the Plains College in Dodge City, Kansas. She became a flight attendant for Braniff Airways. She was based out of Kansas City, before moving to Dallas, TX where she pursued her career until 1966. After leaving Braniff, she worked in the travel industry until retirement on April 16, 1999.&nbsp; She returned to Great Bend to live with and care for her mother.

Carolann was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Great Bend, the Presbyterian Women, and the Red Hat Society.&nbsp; She served on the Great Bend Library Board for 8 years. Her pets were her greatest joy.

She is survived by her cousin, Mary Everett of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Mary’s children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild; and Kevin Pflughoeft of Great Bend, Kansas who Carolann called the adopted grandson.&nbsp; She was preceded in death by her parents.

According to Carolann’s wishes, there will be no viewing or services. Interment will be in the Great Bend Cemetery at Great Bend, Kansas. Carolann Morrison, age 89

Duane G. Legleiter (aka Butch or Tiny), 60, La Crosse, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, July 19, 2023, at his home.

He was born January 19, 1963, in Hays, Kansas, the son of Francis and Mary Ann (Dinkel) Legleiter. He was a lifetime resident of Rush County, Kansas, a 1981 graduate of La Crosse High School and was employed with Rush County Highway Department for 36 years, running heavy equipment, building bridges and supervising day to day operations for several years. He was a passionate farmer, helped with the Legleiter and Sons Construction Company in the 1970’s/80’s, collector of Budweiser memorabilia, and he just seemed to know a little bit about everything.

He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Liebenthal, Kansas, and served on the parish council for many years.

On November 17, 1984, he married his high school sweetheart, Monica McLaughlin in La Crosse.

Survivors include, wife, Monica, La Crosse; his mother, Mary Ann Legleiter, Liebenthal; one daughter, Samantha and son-in-law, Deonte Sims, Kansas City; two grand dogs, Tori and Ace; one brother, Bob Legleiter (Sue), Hays; five sisters, Janett Copeland, Hays, Shirley Haselhorst (Art), Antonino, Lilly Binder (Ernie), Munjor, Evelyn Younker (Darold), Munjor, and Lou Amerine (Craig), Lawrence; one sister-in-law, Carol Legleiter, Hays; numerous aunts, uncles, Godchildren, nieces and nephews and extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his father, Francis Legleiter; his two brothers, Clarence Legleiter and Glenn Legleiter; mother-in-law, Beth Delaney; and grandparents, aunts, uncles, and nephew.

Duane Legleiter, age 60

William “Bill” Jefferson Keener, 94, passed away July 11, 2023, at Wellsprings of Westmoreland in Westmoreland, Kan. He was born on March 17, 1929, at Hoisington, to Fred &amp; Frances “Fanny” (Schreiber) Keener. He married Joan Elliott on May 27, 1951, at Great Bend. She died December 5, 2001.

A former Great Bend resident, Bill was the math and science teacher at Mullinville High School. He was a member of King United Methodist Church in Great Bend and the Walnut City Masonic Lodge #215. He enjoyed spending time with his family.

Survivors include, a son, Adam Keener and wife Kay Hawes of Prairie Village; two daughters, Debbie Winn and wife Kelly Hanshew of Drexel Hill, Penn. and Peggie Post and husband Dennis of Manhattan; a sister, Betty Misegadis of Rush Center; two sisters in law, Jan Elliott of Great Bend, and Jinny Schneider of Rush Center; five grandchildren, Ben Hanshew, Jill Breuer (Mark), Jenna Nightingale (Cy), Rory Keener and Reagan Keener; and four great grandchildren, Lilly, Luke and Lauren Breuer, and Braden Meyer. William 'Bill' Keener, age 94

Agnes Ann Ryan, 70, passed away on July 17, 2023, at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington. She was born on Sept. 25, 1952, in Manhattan, the daughter of Isadore and Elizabeth (Scheck) Leiker. On July 8, 1981, she married John Ryan in Miami, Okla.

A lifetime area resident, Agnes worked as a computer programmer for the Fuller Brush Company for 34 years prior to her retirement in 2012. She was a dedicated Catholic, being a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima, active with St. Joseph Catholic Church and School, serving as a “grandfriend” for students, and was even prayed through the gates of Heaven by Father Terrance Klein. Agnes enjoyed crocheting and sewing, using her green thumb in gardening, and was an avid funeral goer, offering comfort to all that she knew. Her heart was bigger than her body and she loved with all of it, taking care of everyone and was always ready and willing to help anyone. She didn’t know a stranger.

Agnes is survived by her husband of 42 years, John; two sons, Daniel (Victoria) Ryan of Lindsborg, and Stoney (Angie) Ryan of Ellinwood; three daughters, Amanda “Amy” Crawford of Ellinwood, Tamara “Tammy” (Darren) Dauber of Ellinwood, and Shira Ryan of Lyons; 19 grandchildren, Kyle (Sarah) Ryan, Kaylie (fiancé Matthew Adams) Ryan, Kristian Ryan, Kamryn Ryan, Cassandra Crane, Troy Crane, Kenya (Kaden) Kretzer, Xathan Ryan, Casey Ann Ryan, Paige VanSteenburgh, Ison Dauber, RhiAnn Dauber, Keith Burke, Dalton White, Shayla (Michael) Mills, Zeppelin Zimmerman, Axl Ryan, Jamey Wood, and Ella Mae Lynn Wood; 18 great-grandchildren with one on the way. After growing up and living most of her life as an only child, Agnes was blessed after discovering she was the oldest of several biological siblings, including a brother, Seth Hoff; and four sisters, Sandra Peters, Norma Mason, Rita Shannon, and Barbara Calahan.

She is preceded in death by her parents; two grandchildren, Taylor Langen and Taylor Wood; a great-grandchild, Emmitt Mills; and two sisters, Hilda Shannon and Laura Groneberg.

Paul J. Herrman, 101 years of age, La Crosse, Kansas, passed away Sunday, July 16, 2023, at Locust Grove Village, La Crosse, Kansas.

Paul was born Sepember 8, 1921, in La Crosse, Kansas, the son of Jacob and Mary (Heronema) Herrman. He was a longtime resident of Rush County, Kansas. A 1940 graduate of La Crosse High School, La Crosse, Kansas, he was a farmer and oil field mechanic for Phillips 66 before his retirement.

He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Liebenthal, Kansas, Knights Of Columbus Council #2340, and the Virgil C. Dechant 4th Degree Assembly #3550, La Crosse, Kansas. He was a member of VFW Post 3147, and American Legion Post 33, both of La Crosse, Kansas. Paul was a former National Vice President of OCAW (Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers).

He was a World War II United States Army veteran.

On July 23, 1946, he married Angeline “Angie” Dreher in Schoenchen, Kansas. She preceded him in death June 10, 2010.

Paul Herrman, age 101

Deryl Dean Marsell, 86, of Salina, Kan., passed away Wednesday, July 12, 2023. He was born on June 25, 1937, in Green, Kan., to George and Edna (Lowry) Marsell.

Deryl graduated high school in Ada, Kan., and attended Fort Hays State University before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1956. He was a career federal employee and retired from the U.S. Postal Service in Springfield, Mo. In retirement, he volunteered at CoxHealth Medical Center for 22 years. He and his wife, Mary, loved to travel, seeing 48 of the 50 states. His idea of fun consisted of playing all types of games, working on crossword puzzles, playing golf, and dancing and singing with Mary. He was a BIG KU basketball fan and loved the St. Louis Cardinals too. His great sense of humor will be missed the most.

Survivors include his sons, Darren Marsell (Kris), of Lorraine, Kan., Doug Marsell (Karen), of Russell, Kan., and Kent Pack, of Kansas City, Kan.; daughters, Rhonda Carryer (Robert), of Ogden, Kan., and Kim Pack, of California; 16 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary (Skala) Marsell; and sisters, Mildred Russell, Wanda Andrews, and her husband, John.

Galen E. “Igor” Schmidt, 76, La Crosse, Kansas, passed away Friday, July 14, 2023, at Locust Grove Village, La Crosse, Kansas.

Galen was born July 11, 1947, in La Crosse, Kansas, the son of Cyril P. and Marie B. (Jira) Schmidt. He was a lifelong resident of Rush County, Kansas. A 1965 graduate of La Crosse High School, La Crosse, Kansas, Galen furthered his education graduating from Fort Hays Kansas State College, Hays, Kansas, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Arts. He was a foreman at KBK Industries, Rush Center, Kansas, for 20 years before managing United Ag, Olmitz, Kansas. He was then employed with Sykes Enterprises, Hays, Kansas, and Manhattan, Kansas, before retiring. After retiring, he enjoyed spending countless hours on the farm.

He was a member of Hope Lutheran Church, Rush Center, Kansas.

Galen loved farming, spending time with his family especially cherishing the time spent with his three grandsons. He was also known to swing a golf club, and enjoyed his time on the golf course.

On July 10, 1971, he married Donna Keener at First Lutheran Church, La Crosse, Kansas.

Stephen Craig “Steve” Ball, 70, passed away July 16, 2023, at his home in Bison, Kansas. He was born on October 6, 1952, in Great Bend, Kansas, to John and Coralee Ann (Lewis) Ball. On October 10, 1987, he married Linda Koci in Bison, Kansas. She survives.

Steve served his country in the United States Marine Corp and after being discharged, spent his working years as an onsite geologist in the oil field. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge Walnut City Lodge of Rush Center. Steve enjoyed hunting, fishing, dog training and farming.

Survivors include his wife of the home; three brothers, Richard Ball of Junction City, Kansas, Michael (Coleen) Ball of Hillsboro, Kansas, and David Ball of Manhattan, Kansas; two sisters, Candace (John) Cobb of Lawrence, Kansas and Crystal (David) Miller of Winfield, Kansas; stepbrother, Iver Tokoi of Abilene, Kansas; and stepsister, Amanda (Tim) Hilfiger of Spring Grove Pennsylvania.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Patrick Ball; and sister-in-law, Patricia Ball.

Larned - Joseph “Joe” L. Yeager, 73, passed away June 14, 2022 at Via Christi Village in Hays, Kansas.

He was born April 6, 1949 in Great Bend, Kansas, the son of James and Phyllys Sweetland Yeager.

Moving from Overland Park, Kansas, he was an area resident since 2017. He worked in manufacturing with a career ranging from welding and plastics production to design and sales. Joe was a lifelong artist, focusing on photography, screen printing, and woodwork. He was a member of the Argonne Rebels Drum and Bugle Corps of Great Bend, Kansas from 1965 to 1970, marching in the corps’ color guard and rifle squad. Joe also served on the corps’ instructional staff during the early 1970’s.

Survivors include: his son, Patrick Yeager, Riva, Maryland; brother, Jeff (Jan) Yeager, Omaha, Nebraska; ex-wife, Joyce, Pasadena, Maryland; two granddaughters, Audrey and Lucie; two nieces, Leah (Michael) Yeager Schmit, Omaha, Nebraska, and Laura Yeager, Kansas City, Missouri.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Phyllys Yeager.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial graveside service will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 22, 2023 at Larned Cemetery with Pastor Jarred Smith presiding.

Joseph 'Joe' Yeager, age 73

Evelyn Wilson, 87, passed away July 12, 2023, at Diversicare of Larned. She was born on March 15, 1936, at Versailles, Mo., to John J. “Jack” &amp; Dessie (Hess) Andrew. She married Robert Wilson on August 9, 1953, at St. John. He died February 25, 2019.

A longtime area resident, Evelyn was a dietary specialist at CKMC for many years until her retirement in 2000. She enjoyed traveling and riding motorcycles, painting t-shirts, sewing, reading, garage sales and working on crossword puzzles.

Survivors include, two daughters, Connie Wildeman and husband Paul of Hays, and Sandra Stevens of Winfield; a brother, Bill Andrew of Seattle, Wash.; three grandchildren, Bob Roller (Joanna), Twila Lasiter and Elizabeth Keller (Earl Lynam); and nine great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert; a son in law, Tommy Stevens; and many siblings.

Larry Wayne Stieben, 74, Otis, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, July 12, 2023, at his home.

Larry was born June 30, 1949, in Rush County, Kansas, the son of Norman W. and Alice E. (Weltmer) Stieben. He was a lifelong resident of Rush County, Kansas. A 1967 graduate of Otis Rural High School, Otis, Kansas, he was a mechanic at Stieben Service and Garage, Otis, Kansas, a family owned and operated business.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Otis, Kansas. Larry was also a veteran of the United States Air Force.

Larry was a Chevy man, a NASCAR enthusiast, and enjoyed mowing the lawn, and working on small engines. You would find him during football and basketball season watching his beloved Chiefs and KU Jayhawks.

On November 19, 1977, he married Patricia “Patty” Jurgensen at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Timken, Kansas.

Survivors include: his wife, Patty Stieben, Otis, Kansas; two daughters, Tara Brummett (Patrick), Cleveland, Missouri, and Hope Stieben, El Dorado, Kansas; and three grandchildren.

Visitation will be Friday, July 14, 2023, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, Kansas, with the family receiving friends from 6:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.

Recently coming to Larned from Eureka, Kansas, June was the IT Specialist for several hospitals in the areas of St. Louis, Southern California, Eureka, Kansas. She was a 1970 graduate from Great Bend High School, and enjoyed golf – even getting a hole in one - and bowling during her younger years.

Survivors include, a daughter, Theresa Parker of Birmingham, Alabama; a grandson, Nate Parker of Birmingham, Alabama; a nephew, Edward “Ed” (Renee) Mayer of Arkansas City, Kansas; and a great niece, Tara Lynn (Kenneth) Ellis of Larned, Kansas.
