Carol Ann Garcia, 76, passed away October 27, 2023, at Azria Health Woodhaven, Great Bend, Kan. She was born March 8, 1947, in Kinsley to Jose Contreras, Sr. &amp; Jance (Almanza) Contreras.

Survivors include, two sons, Richard Garcia and Alex Contreras; a daughter, Hannah Contreras; a son in law, Jeremy Robinson; a daughter in law, Lindsay Hames; four brothers, Fred Contreras, Steve Contreras, David Contreras and Joe Contreras, Jr.; two sisters, Delores Munoz and Anita Cleveland; four grandchildren, Braelynn Contreras, Haven Hames, Rylan Robinson and Trevor Cline; five nieces and nephews, April Zendajas, Candy Contreras, Steven Contreras, Shawna Contreras and Dalton Contreras; three great nieces and nephews, Reyna Zendajas, Alexandria Zendajas and Vicente Zendajas; and a great great nephew, Horacio Zendajas. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Viola “Vi” (Moeder) Prosser, 90, loving wife, mother, grandmother and faithfully devoted to her Lord and Savior, was welcomed to her Heavenly home on Thursday, Oct. 26, 2023. Viola was born Dec. 23, 1932, and was one of 10 siblings. Vi married Francis Prosser on June 2, 1956, in Odin and they raised five children. They were married for 61 years. Following Frank’s death in 2017, Vi continued to live on and operate their family farm.

She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Sacred Heart Altar Society. Vi was passionate about her work as a volunteer for the Knights of Columbus, Pawnee Valley Hospital Auxiliary, Pawnee County Fair Board, Zoning Commission, Red Cross Blood Drive, and as a CASA Advocate.

Viola 'Vi' Prosser, age 90

Tony Martinez, 63, passed away Oct. 22, 2023, in Wichita.

He was born Oct. 13, 1960, in San Antonio, Texas, the son of Rodolfo Martinez, Sr. and Marylou Mendez. He was a longtime resident of Larned, meeting Tracy in 2000. The couple married on Dec. 31, 2005.

They spent more than two decades together, raising their blended family, starting with Tony’s daughter, Brandi, and Tracy’s niece, Tiasha, as well as enjoying weekend visits from Tony’s son, Anthony, and daughter, Esperanza. They were soon joined by the couple’s daughter, Nydia, and sons Andres and Aemilio.

Tony knew no stranger. He was an extremely laid-back back and friendly person. He welcomed everyone like family to his home. He would do anything to help if he could. Familia was everything to him, and he helped take care of many nieces and nephews, over the years. He liked to help out his mother-in-law by mowing her big yard, or taking her to visit her mother in Hutchinson. Conversations had (in Spanish, of course) by Tony, Abby and Grandma Basilia were always lively and filled with laughter.

He relished telling stories about his life in San Antonio. A kid at heart, he often spent his time outdoors, playing basketball and soccer with his kids. Or, he could be spotted out exploring, looking for treasures with his metal detector. At home, the couch was Tony’s comfort spot, where he enjoyed watching crime shows, working on Sudoku Puzzles, and listening to Spanish Music. He also enjoyed watching movies. “Over the Top” was an all-time favorite for him and his son, Jacob.

At a young age, Tony would travel with his family to Wisconsin and help them with seasonal work. As he got older he lived in Plainview, Texas, working on oil rigs and at meat packing plants. Later, he moved closer to his mother in Great Bend, KS, to be close to his disabled brother. He was employed by Sunflower Diversified Services and Pathways a total of 13 years in Great Bend. He then worked at Larned State Hospital for 18 years.

Survivors include his wife Tracy, Larned; his children Emily Soto, Plainview, Texas; Brandi Martinez (Jesus Ramirez), Macksville; Tiasha Perez, Houston, Texas; Anthony Martinez (Hailey Garman), Littlestown, Pa.; Esperanza Palmer (Dillion Schmidt), Hays; Daughter Nydia, Sons Andres and Aemilio Martinez, all of Larned; grandchildren, Luna, Mateo and Leo; brothers, Salvador (Edna) Martinez, Plainview, Texas; Augie (Sherry) Martinez, Spokane, Wash.; Javier Martinez, Altus, Okla.; Steve (Dora) Martinez, Hollis, Okla.; Larry (Luz Maria) Martinez, Amarillo, Texas; Noel Martinez, Great Bend; sister Ruby (Adam) Perez, Lakin; and numerous nieces and nephews, who will miss him dearly.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his son Jacob Soto, and two brothers, Rodolfo Martinez Jr, and David Martinez.

Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 27, 2023, at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel, Larned, with Mike Barton presiding. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary.

Larned – Eugene Ernest Nusser Sr., 70, passed away October 22, 2023, at Country Living Memory Care, Larned, Kansas.

Eugene was born March 16, 1953, in Hutchinson, Kansas, the son of Arthur and Joyce Brocius Nusser. He grew up in Plevna, Kansas graduating from Fairfield High School before becoming a resident of Hutchinson.

He graduated from Hutchinson Community College with an associate degree in engineering and was employed with Master Machine Tools and AEI, Inc. as an engineer.

He was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church of Hutchinson. Eugene was on the original board of directors for Club Azzurri Soccer Club where he dedicated his time to the club for the betterment of the sport and his sons.

Survivors include: two sons, Eugene Nusser Jr., Wichita and William (Katelyn) Nusser, Larned; a daughter, Heather Nusser, Knoxville, TN; a sister, Connie Nusser, Tulsa, OK; three grandchildren, Landon Nusser, Reese Nusser and Kai Bowers.

Cremation has taken place. Private inurnment will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery of Hutchinson.

Eugene Nusser Sr., age 70

Kelly T. Jeroue, walked into heaven on Oct. 21, 2023. He was born Sept. 4, 1959, in Great Bend, the son of Charles and Mary Ann (Mahaffy) Jeroue. Kelly graduated from St. John High School in 1978, where he was active in all sports, football, track, and baseball. He went on to play baseball for Barton County Community College.

On Oct. 3, 1988, he married Katherine M. Schremmer in Liberal. Together they moved to Twin Falls, Idaho where they spent 22 years before moving back to their roots in Kansas in January of 2019. Kelly worked as an insurance and car salesman, a chimney sweep, and at the Amalgameted Sugar factory. He also enjoyed coaching his children and other children in baseball and softball and following their careers. Always considered quite the monkey, he excelled at his own tree trimming business, K&amp;K Tree Trimming &amp; Removal. Unfortunately, an accident placed Kelly in a wheelchair. He spent a long time in rehabilitation at the Craig Hospital in Englewood, Colo., where his zest for life and talk were appreciated on his rounds to other patients in more traumatic care. Kelly was strong in his faith and loved to share it with others. He was a current member of the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Katherine Jeroue of the home, and three children, Kasey (Kayla) Jeroue of Twin Falls, Idaho, Kaleb Jeroue of Orofino, Idaho, and Kynzi Jeroue of Burley, Idaho; and his four beloved grandchildren, Carter, Parker, Peighton and Braylynn; a brother, Ken (Barbara) Jeroue of Russell; and five sisters, Barbara Gordon of Priest River, Idaho, Jody (Steve) Klepper of Great Bend, Cindy Maser of Clovis, N.M., Jacqueline Jeroue of Fresno, Calif., Tammy (Todd) Alsup of Olathe; and many in-laws, nieces and nephews, and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Tracy Jeroue, and his parents-in-law, Jim &amp; Kitty Schremmer.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, with family to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. with Vigil and Rosary service to begin at 7 p.m. all at the funeral home.

Cynthia Gail Judd, 69, passed away on October 21, 2023, at Medicalodges of Great Bend, Kansas. She was born on August 25, 1954, in Wichita, Kansas, to William and Phyllis (Corley) Votapka. On November 28, 1981, she married Mark A. Judd in Phillipsburg, Kansas.

A long time Great Bend resident coming from Stockton, Cindy worked as an accountant for CPI and financial manager for 20/20 Optix. She was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene. Cindy was an avid reader, enjoyed KU basketball games, and participating in the Relay For Life Survivor Walk.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Amanda (E.J.) Shepherd of Louisburg, Kansas, and Andrea (Chris) Jeska of Great Bend, Kansas; seven grandchildren; Ward, Winston, Whittaker, Benton, Jude, Adalynn, and Silas; a brother, Timothy (Laurie) Votapka of Kildeer, Illinois; and a sister, Nancy (Howard) Diacon of Lawrence, Kansas. Cynthia Judd, age 69

Wanda Lee Heine, 71, passed away Oct. 21, 2023, at University of Kansas Health System - Great Bend Campus, Great Bend. She was born March 21, 1952, in Great Bend, to Ernest and Dorothy (Cobler) Doty. Wanda married Ronald Lee Heine Jan. 6, 1973, in Ellinwood.

Wanda, a lifetime Great Bend resident, most recently worked at Salvation Army and previously worked at Dominican Sisters of Peace, Pizza Hut and Dilly's restaurant. Wanda had a deep affection and love for all animals, especially dogs, in particular Bucky and Bailey. Wanda Heine, age 71

Marilyn Edwards, 93, passed away Oct. 19, 2023, at Medicalodges of Great Bend. She was born Feb. 14, 1930, in Great Bend to Lloyd and Elizabeth (Bell) Spruill. She married Virgil Standish then later married Richard M. Edwards Feb. 14, 1975, in Reno, Nev. Richard passed away Dec. 8, 2010.

Marilyn, a long time Great Bend resident, was a member of Pi Phi at the University of Kansas, P.E.O, Great Bend Petroleum Club and several bridge clubs. Marilyn was a true friend who valued time spent with those who were dear to her.

Survivors include, two sons, Scott Standish (Tonie) of Fort Walton Beach, Fla. and Barton Standish (Marjorie Rosenman) of Phoenix, Ariz.; three grandchildren, Coleman Standish (Staci Wendt) of Long Beach, Calif., Dylan Standish (Amy Walser) of Manhattan Beach, Calif. and Caitlin Standish of Portland, Ore.; and two great grandchildren, Vincent Standish and Zadie Standish. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Richard Edwards; and a sister, Betty Theisen.

Marilyn Edwards, age 93

Kenneth Eldon “Kenny” Wells, 86, passed away Oct. 17, 2023, at Medicalodges of Great Bend. He was born on June 21, 1937, in Great Bend, to Emery Doyle and Bertha (Staerkel) Wells. Kenny was married to Ruby Popp; they were later divorced. He was then married to Lois Bath.

A lifetime resident of Great Bend, Kenny worked as an electrician before becoming owner and operator of Wells Seamless Guttering for more than 40 years. He was of the Lutheran faith and a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Kenny was also a member of many country bands, playing the bass. He liked fishing, bowling, and was a pet lover, especially his dogs.

Survivors include three daughters, Debra (Steve) McAnulla, Carol (Bill) Herrman, and Cheryl Davis, all of Great Bend; seven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife; a son, Douglas Wells; his parents; two brothers, Melvin and Larry Wells; and his beloved dog, Missy.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. A private service will be held at a later date. Memorials have been designated to the Golden Belt Humane Society or Fraternal Order of Eagles, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Kenneth 'Kenny' Wells, age 86

Janet Joan Funk, 77, of Russell, died on Thursday, Oct. 19, 2023, at Main Street Manor of Russell.

Janet was born on June 30, 1946, in Russell. She was the daughter of LaVern H. and Elaine L. (Karst) Becker. She grew up on the family farm near Milberger. She graduated from Russell High School in the Class of 1964. She then attended and graduated from Ft. Hays State University with a Degree in Elementary Education.

Janet was united in marriage to Wayne E. Funk on Aug. 07, 1966, at the United Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Milberger. From this union, Janet and Wayne were blessed with three sons Doug, Warren, and Deric.

Janet was a dedicated Teacher for 40 years. She started teaching in 1967. She worked for a few local school districts before spending most of her teaching years in Russell. She also was the Librarian at the school.

Janet was an active member of the United Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Milberger. She was on the Church Council, sang in the Choir, and taught Sunday School. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, Prairie Mates FCE for 52 years, Milberger Activities Association, the K- State Extension Council, Sunflower 4-H member and Leader, and was the Russell County Republican Committeewoman. In her spare time, she enjoyed playing cards, singing, a little gambling, and taking advantage of her Gift for Gab. She loved spending time with her family and grandchildren. Janet lived by the motto “Take Care of Everyone” and this was a strong influence on her and her family.

Surviving family include her sons Doug Funk (Teema) of Russell, Warren Funk (Erica) of Rexford, and Deric Funk (Mandy) of Galatia; brother Martin Becker and wife Susan of Russell; four grandchildren Lakin, Kaitlyn, Camille and Callen Funk; three step-grandchildren Molly, Macy and Chloe and three step-great-grandchildren Delilah, Amari and Lovelyn. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Wayne on Sept. 05, 2022.

Celebration of Janet’s Life will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2023, at the United Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Milberger. Burial will follow at the Milberger Cemetery. Janet Funk, age 77

Elward James “Eldy” Hiss, Jr., 96, loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and friend died October 17, 2023, at Azria Health Woodhaven, Great Bend, Kan. He was born July 10, 1927, in Great Bend, the second son of Elward J. Hiss, Sr. and Carrie (Williams) Hiss. He married JoAnn Gallon on October 26, 1947, at the First Presbyterian Church in Great Bend, and they were married for 73 years until her passing on May 7, 2020.

A lifetime Great Bend resident, Eldy was born and raised on the family farm in Buffalo Township. Eldy was a partner in Hiss Dairy and Hiss, Inc. Farm. He attended District 33 rural school and graduated from Great Bend High School Class of 1945, in which he was senior class President. He was a member and on the governing boards for First Presbyterian Church of Great Bend, Presbyterian Men’s Club, treasurer of Buffalo Township for 25 years, a Charter member of Great Bend Evening Lions Club, a lifetime member of B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge #1127, past board member and President of Great Bend Coop Association and a member of the Barton County Historical Society. He enjoyed traveling, photography, friends and his family but especially loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include, his children, Richard L. "Rick" Hiss and wife Tina, Sandra K. “Sandy” Hiss, and Elward James Hiss, III "Jim" and wife Melinda, all of Great Bend; four grandchildren, Michelle (Aaron) Peck of Salina, Bradley (Nikki) Hiss of Great Bend, E.J. Hiss (finacé Kayla Cooley) of Des Moines, Iowa, and Veronica (Tim) Bush of Great Bend; three great grandchildren, Adia Grace Peck, Noah Preston Peck and Anthony Richard Hiss; and a sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth Hiss Brower (Al) of Colorado. Cody Xavier Pfeifer, 29, passed away October 19, 2023, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, Hutchinson, Kansas. He was born on January 11, 1994, in Hays, Kansas, to Todd and Tambra (Herdman) Pfeifer.

A resident of Hutchinson, Cody was an assistant store manager at Dillons. He was an avid board and card game player, along with his love on Dungeons and Dragons, Magic: The Gathering, Cosplay Conventions, and anime. Cody could also be found either at the lake, camping in Colorado, or just being outside. Above all, Cody cherished his time spent with family and friends.

Survivors include his parents; sisters, Sierra, Marissa (fiancé, Landon Winkler), Johanna (fiancé, Tyler Grieb), and Erin Pfeifer, all of Great Bend; grandparents, Ray and Sheila Pfeifer and Harold Herdman; three uncles, Dr. Cory Pfeifer, Chad (Stephanie) Herdman, and Trenton (Jana) Herdman; six cousins, Athena Grotheer, Justin Herdman, Joey Herdman, Jeremy Herdman, Clayton Herdman, Garrison Herdman, and Kendrick Herdman; close friends, Tiffany Ireland, Isaiah Pesina, Aaron Hostetler and Bryan Hostetler; and beloved dog, Yuki.

Larned – Tess Viola Couch, 40, passed away October 18, 2023.

She was born August 19, 1983 in Larned, the daughter of Gerald Raymond and Lee Anne Stueckemann Williams. A lifetime area resident, she was a longtime employee for Larned State Hospital.

She was of the Christian faith. Tess enjoyed watching movies, listening to music, cruising around, doing her make-up, and loved spending time and shopping with her girls.

She was married to Shawn Couch. They later divorced.

Survivors include: mother, Lee Anne Williams, Larned; two daughters, Alexandria Couch, Larned and Samantha Couch, Ellsworth; sister, Luci Williams, Larned; nephew, Deacon Martin, Larned; significant other, Gina Perez, Larned; two dogs, Elway and Toshi.

She was preceded in death by her father, Gerald Williams.

Cremation has taken place and no services are planned at this time.

Tess Couch, age 40

James Dennis “Jim” Riordan, age 72 years, of Great Bend, Kansas, passed away on Tuesday, October 17, 2023 at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.&nbsp; Jim was born on February 12, 1951 at Detroit, Michigan to John and Alta Lee Riordan, and grew up in South Lyon, Michigan.&nbsp; Jim attended college at the University of Idaho, where he also was on the University of Idaho Vandals Football Team.&nbsp; He later worked as a lumberjack in Idaho for a number of years prior to coming to Great Bend, Kansas. Jim worked in the Oilfield for over 50 years as a Driller for LD Davis Drilling, Duke Drilling, and Val Energy and as a Casing Crew Operator for Murray Casing, all of Great Bend.&nbsp; He was united in marriage to Ginger Richter on November 25, 1978 at Great Bend, Kansas. Jim loved his Harley-Davidson motorcycle, football, and was a lover of animals.

 </figure>James Dennis “Jim” Riordan, age 72 years, of Great Bend, Kansas, passed away on Tuesday, October 17, 2023 at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.&nbsp; Jim was born on February 12, 1951 at Detroit, Michigan to John and Alta Lee Riordan, and grew up in South Lyon, Michigan.&nbsp; Jim attended college at the University of Idaho, where he also was on the University of Idaho Vandals Football Team.&nbsp; He later worked as a lumberjack in Idaho for a number of years prior to coming to Great Bend, Kansas. Jim worked in the Oilfield for over 50 years as a Driller for LD Davis Drilling, Duke Drilling, and Val Energy and as a Casing Crew Operator for Murray Casing, all of Great Bend.&nbsp; He was united in marriage to Ginger Richter on November 25, 1978 at Great Bend, Kansas. James 'Jim' Riordan, age 72

Robert E. Yarmer, 90, passed away at Ellinwood District Hospital on Oct. 13, 2023. Born Dec. 24, 1932, in Ellinwood, he was the son of Joseph and Julia (Malone) Yarmer. A lifetime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, he married Madge Buckbee there on Oct, 14, 1977. 

Robert’s first job was delivering the Wichita Beacon newspaper for five years, quitting at the end of his senior year. He was a partner in Strobl-Yarmer Construction for 50 years, building many custom homes in the surrounding area. After graduating high school, Mr. Yarmer served in the Army. He took basic training at Fort Riley and attended Counterfire school at Fort Benning, Georgia, before being attached to Hq. and Hq. Company, 6th&nbsp;Infantry Regiment, Berlin, Germany. He served on the City Council several terms and was the President of the Ellinwood Community Historical Society when they published the 1991 history book the “Echoes.” In 1996, Robert received the Distinguished Community Service Award, given by the Ellinwood Rotary Club.

Survivors include his wife Madge; sister, Joleen Truesdell, Denver, Colo.; and several nieces and nephews. His brother, Richard, passed away in 1956. Richard was born in January and Robert in December of 1932, making them the same age.

Robert had many hobbies, including history, military, photography and travel. He was a life member of the Kansas Historical Society and a charter member of the Ellinwood Community Historical Society among others. As an avid collector he sought out early Kansas and Ellinwood maps, books, and pictures, compiled the&nbsp;Annals of Ellinwood&nbsp;and wrote about early merchants, their businesses, and uncommon events of the town. Robert’s mother, a one-time school teacher, taught him the love of reading, a passion he carried all his life and leaving a large library of history books in his passing. His body was taken to the landfill with regular trash pickup Tuesday.

Funeral mass will take place 10 a.m., Monday, Oct. 16, 2023, at St. Joseph Church in Ellinwood with Father Terrance Klein officiating. Interment will follow at Lakin-Comanche Cemetery in Ellinwood. Visitation will take place at Minnis Chapel in Ellinwood Sunday, Oct. 15 from 1-6 p.m., with Vigil/Rosary service at 7 p.m. at the church. David Ross Hinman, 68, died Sept. 26, 2023, at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington. He was born Oct. 7, 1954, in Winfield, the son of Wilbur “Jack” and Wilma Fern (Billings) Hinman. He then served during the Vietnam War in United States Navy as a aviation ordnanceman.

On Jan. 18, 1992, he married Laree Rose Radenberg in Oklahoma City, Okla. They moved back to Kansas in 2003, and David worked for Oneok and in the oil field driving water and tank trucks for Ellinwood Tank Service and Paul’s Oilfield Service. Driving was not only his job but his hobby, as he loved all things with a motor. He would drag race and was a member of the NHRA. He loved his vintage hot rods and would often take them to shows. David also loved animals but he mostly loved spoiling his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Laree Hinman of the home; son, Steven Hinman and wife Sarah of Hoisington; daughter, Melony Johnson of Clarksville, Tenn.; and grandchildren Jackson Hinman and Kathryn Titsworth of Hoisington and Ian &amp; Tyler Durant of Clarksville, Tennessee; and one great grandson; siblings, Michael Hinman and wife Connie of Lawtey, Fla., Steve Hinman and wife Debbie of Moore, Okla., Janet Winters and husband Mike of Wetumka, Okla., Carol Peek and husband Stuart of Oklahoma City, Okla.; and many nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 18, 2024, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home Chapel.

Roberta V. Hairfield, 92, of Larned, Kansas, died on October 11, 2023 at Diversicare of Larned.

Roberta (Bobbie) was born December 20, 1930 in Zurich, Kansas, the daughter of Rudy and Violet Novotny of Hoisington, Kansas.

Roberta graduated from Hoisington High School in 1948 and was employed with Southwestern Bell in Plainville and Hoisington, Kansas.

On May 7, 1951, she married Harry W Hairfield of Hoisington in the Great Bend Methodist Church. They were married 62 years until his death in 2013.

Survivors include sons, Dr. Wm Michael Hairfield (Wendy) of Lynwood, Washington; Robert Roland Hairfield (Laura), Pasco, Washington; Grandsons, Robert and Matthew; brothers E.J. Novotny, Russell, Kansas; Dr. Wm. G. Novotny, Kansas City; sisters Dolores Morton, Larned; and Sharon Lovesee, Larned.

A loving wide, mother, grandmother, and sister, Roberta will be missed and will live forever in our hearts.

Paul Eugene Achatz, 71, passed away on Oct. 8, 2023, at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, Kansas. He was born on Aug. 19, 1952, in Great Bend, to Milton E. and Bertha (Birzer) Achatz.

A lifetime Barton County resident, Paul was a truck driver during his working years. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ellinwood, also attending mass at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Great Bend, Knights of Columbus, and SRCA Dragstrip. Paul enjoyed restoring classic cars and working in his yard and garden. He most loved doing things for his children and grandchildren, and spending time with family.

Survivors include a son, Scott Achatz of Johnstown, Ohio; a daughter, Kristi Oetken and her husband, John, of Great Bend; two grandchildren, Laci Oetken and Kaden Achatz; three brothers, John Achatz and his wife, Bonnie, of Wichita, Charlie Achatz and his wife, Barb, of Raymore, Mo., and Gerald Achatz and his wife, Glenna, of Great Bend; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Lester Achatz.

Cremation has taken place. The family will be receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, Oct. 20, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home. Paul Achatz, age 71

Sheryl Jean Janke, 69, passed away October 5, 2023, at Heart Hospital of New Mexico in Albuquerque, N.M. She was born July 10, 1954, in Claflin, Kan., to Raymond and Ruth (Brown) Janke.

Sheryl, a 1972 Claflin High School graduate and a 1976 University of Kansas graduate, dedicated her professional life to occupational therapy. From 1977 to 1989, she was a Registered Occupational Therapist at the Northampton VA Medical Center, Leeds, Massachusetts and from 1989 until her retirement in 2011, she was a therapist at the Salem VA Medical Center Salem, Virgina. Sheryl loved assisting Veterans which was evident by her 34 years of service. While at the Northampton VA she led her team in developing and implementing a program to reintegrate Vets with nonhospital Vets. This program received National attention. Being passionate about being heart healthy, for herself and others, Sheryl was involved at the Fit Studio 365, Connection Achievement Therapy Center, and several senior fitness or healthy foods groups. She was a follower of Jesus and a member of the Claflin United Methodist Church in her youth. Sheryl continued to grow in her faith by being active in Bible Study Fellowship. She enjoyed holidays and lunches out with friends. Following retirement, she explored our world by cruising with her brother and sister-in-law. Although she was far away from Kansas, she connected by phone often to check on her extended family. She will be missed by her family and her devoted and loyal friends.

Survivors include her 1st cousins, Paul (Connie) Wesseler, Lois (Dennis) Hammer, Arlon (Marsha) Wesseler, Bruce (Olga) Sutherland, John (Debbie) Amos, Karen (Dale) DeWerff; and a sister-in-law, Regina Janke of Los Lunas, N.M. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Warren Janke and 1st cousin, Sandy Estabrook.

Sheryl Janke, age 69

Keith Howard, 95, a resident of Great Bend Brookdale Assisted Living at time of death, but lifelong resident in western Reno County near Sylvia, Kansas, passed away on October 6, 2023. He was born on February 21, 1928, north of Sylvia, Kansas, to Paul and Blanche Howard. 

Keith graduated from Sylvia High School. After graduating, Keith attended McPherson College and Fort Hays State College for one year each. He played basketball at McPherson College and was on the practice team of the Fort Hays State football team. 

He then joined the Navy for four years and was stationed at Norfolk, Virginia. While in the service he served as a clerk in the office of the Destroyer Division Commander on the destroyer Allen M. Sumner. 

Once back in Kansas, he married Josephine Adella Cowgill (Adella, to all) also from Sylvia, on December 25, 1956, in Hutchinson, Kansas. They enjoyed being married for nearly 63 years. After returning home from the Navy, Keith worked in the oil field as a driller at night and a farmer by day. He and Adella farmed together in the Sylvia area for nearly 57 years. 

Besides farming, Keith enjoyed hunting, playing 10-point pitch and dominos, and watching KU basketball and K-State football games. He and Adella looked forward to attending the National Junior College Basketball tournament in Hutchinson each year. They also attended church at Pleasant Hill Church of the Nazarene in Sylvia and First Nazarene Church in Hutchinson. He loved getting together with family to enjoy a good, home-cooked meal followed by some games.

Keith is survived by his four children, Michel (Rhett) Jahelka of Little Mountain, SC; Melanie (Bryan)Mosier of Ellinwood, KS; Lindy (Jaime) Howard of Alden, KS; and Shane (Crissy) Howard of Denton, TX. Also surviving are his 10 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Preceding Keith in death are his wife, Adella; parents, Paul and Blanche Howard; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Twila (Fred) Yoder and Pauline (Clarence) Huffman; and a grandson, Nathan Daniel Franco. Roberta Jean Rogers, 71, passed away September 27, 2023, at her home near Hudson, Kansas surrounded by her loving family.

Roberta was born on March 3, 1952, in Bremerton, Washington, to Robert and Jean (Nivert) Bentley. On January 12, 1974, she married Bob Rogers in Kansas City, Kansas.

Roberta grew up mostly in Kansas City, where she met her future husband. After marrying, they lived in the Kansas City area; Houston, Texas; Salina, and finally rural Hudson. She retired as the Trust Operations Officer for Advantage Trust Company in Salina.

Roberta found delight in seeing others enjoying her amazing cooking. She volunteered her cooking talents to raise funds for Project Salina, a cause near to her heart. She also shared her passion for cooking, reading, and creative art projects with her family, many of whom still have painted or cross-stitched shirts in their closets. She spent many enjoyable evenings watching movies with her family, often hiding her eyes behind the TV remote during suspenseful parts.

Roberta is survived by her husband Bob; children, Rebecca (Mark) Popp of Hudson; Sarah (Andrew) Applegarth of Salina; and Stephen (Pam) Rogers of Elk Grove, CA; grandchildren; Donovan Applegarth, Evan Applegarth, Bryson Rogers, and Avery Popp; twin brother, Robert (Suzanne) Bentley of Overland Park; and sister, Mary Julo of Gladstone, MO. She was proceeded in death by her parents.

Visitation for family and friends will be held in Salina from 5:00 – 7:00 PM on Friday, October 20, 2023, at Roselawn Funeral Home, 1423 E Crawford St and in Overland Park from 5:00 – 7:00 PM on Friday, October 27, 2023, at Johnson County Memorial Gardens, 11200 Metcalf Ave.

Roberta Rogers, age 71

Dana Ruth Foss, aged 83, peacefully passed away on October 6, 2023, at Wilson Care Center in Wilson, Kansas. She was born on November 6, 1939, in Starkville, Mississippi, to LeRoy and Hazel (Ragan) Orr. Dana's life journey included marriage to Vernon L. Kaiser and, subsequently, on October 3, 1981, she wed David Foss in Great Bend, Kansas. 

Dana's professional journey led her to the local credit bureau before serving as an administrative assistant for the Barton Community College Athletic Department, where she dedicated herself until her retirement in 2010. During her tenure, Dana actively engaged in various facets of the department and even acted as the devoted sponsor for the BCCC Cougarettes for over 30 years. Beyond her professional commitments, Dana was a cherished member of the Prince of Peace Parish, Altar Society, BCC Booster Club, Touched by Cancer Support Group, and her achievements supporting all BCC athletic events and athletes, earned her a place in the BCC Sports Hall of Fame in 2006. Among her hobbies, Dana enjoyed playing bridge, cherished her time with her Taco Club and class of ’57, and loved spending time with her family. 

Dana is survived by her beloved husband, David Foss, who shared their home; two children, Doug (Michelle) Kaiser and Lori (Alan) Crowther, all residing in Great Bend. Her legacy lives on through seven cherished grandchildren: Chris (Sarah) Kaiser, Kyle Kaiser, Brice Kaiser, Cal Kaiser, Allyson Kaiser, Cody (Kristin) Crowther, and Alexis Crowther. Dana was also blessed with four great-grandchildren: Coleman Crowther, Conrad Crowther, Anastyn Kaiser, and Wesley Kaiser. She was preceded in death by her parents. 

Visitation for Dana's friends and family will take place from Noon to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 12, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home. An Altar Society Rosary will be offered at 4:00 p.m., followed by a Vigil at 7:00 p.m. 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, October 13, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend, with Father Prakash Kola presiding. Dana will be laid to rest at Great Bend Cemetery, Great Bend. The family kindly requests that guests wear attire representing Barton Community College in memory of Dana. Scott Taylor Keast, 73, passed away peacefully at his home in Larned on Oct. 5, 2023, from complications brought on by multiple sclerosis. He was born July 28, 1950, in Great Bend; the first of eight children born to Donald and Virgina Keast.

Scott was a graduate of Larned High School and attended Ft. Hays State College. He also served in the local National Guard unit and spent his life doing what he loved most, which was farming.

Scott is survived by seven brothers and sisters; Mary Bryant (Jim), Becky Traylor (Mike), Sarah Culver (Cal); all of Rogers, Ark.; Bob Keast (Debbie), Mike Keast (Yvonne), Jim Keast all of Larned; Duane Keast (Angie) Salina. Daughters Jennifer Gillespie (Rusty) St. John; Julie Schooler (Jeremy) Manhattan; Jacque Kneebone (Kelly) DeSoto; Ryan Keast, Winnemucca, Nev.; step-son Michael Ashley (Jessica), San Diego, Calif. Grandchildren; Taylor Casper, Braxton Schooler, Carsyn Schooler, Max Kneebone, Jamie Kneebone, Gabby Kneebone, Tanner Kneebone, Holden Ashley. Great-grandchild, Chloe Casper. He is also survived by the mother of his children Terry Bauer, Pawnee Rock andseven former wife Belinda Bagby, Hutchinson.

Margaret Ann Ney, 93, passed away on Oct. 5, 2023, at Medicalodges of Great Bend. She was born Aug. 10, 1930, in Hoisington, the daughter of John E. and Margaret (Kultgen) Koeller.

She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and Altar Society, in Hoisington. She was a former member of the Daughter’s of Isabella of Claflin.

Margaret Ann was married to Francis J. Ney on April 11, 1950. He preceded her in death on Nov. 29, 2003. She was also preceded in death by a son, Michael E. Ney, daughter, Mary Lou Degenhardt, and a grandson, Shawn A. Ney, daughter-in-law, Debbie Ney; two brothers, John &amp; William Koeller, a sister, Luella M. Crouch, brother-in-law, William M. Crouch, and a sister-in-law, Opal Koeller.

Margaret Ann worked as a retail clerk for Duckwalls &amp; Banner stores in Hoisington. She then went to work in 1989 for Anthony’s and later Stage Stores in Great Bend. She also sold Avon over her lifetime until October of 2019. Before and after her retirement she hosted bus trips to the casinos of Kansas with Cheyenne Travel and the Hoisington Recreation. Margaret Ann didn’t know a stranger for she was always looking to fill that next bus trip. Her smile and outgoing personality will live forever in the following survivors: Sons, John F. Ney (Nicky) and Bob (Hope) Ney all of Hoisington,&nbsp;son-in-law, Richard Degenhardt of Great Bend, 10 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 8 great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 12 to 8 p.m., Sunday, with family to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. A Vigil and Rosary will begin at 7 p.m., all at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, Oct. 9, 2023, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Hoisington, celebrated by Father Warren Stoecklein. Burial will follow in St. John Catholic Cemetery, Hoisington.
