Paul H. Tomlin, a beloved member of the Oklahoma City, Okla. and Great Bend communities, passed away in Oklahoma City on Nov. 28, 2023 at the age of 69. Born on Dec. 11, 1953, to Harold Vincent Tomlin and Katherine Ann Tomlin, Paul's life was filled with passion, creativity, and a deep love for his family and friends.

Paul's journey began in Great Bend, where he graduated from Great Bend High School in 1971. He then pursued his passion for photography and videography at Oklahoma City Community College, where he honed his skills and developed a keen eye for capturing moments. His talent led him to become a camera operator at Station KWTV-9 in Oklahoma City, where he brought stories to life through his lens.

In addition to his work at KWTV-9, Paul also dedicated his time and talent to the Oklahoma City Community College of Public Health as a videographer. His commitment to capturing the essence of public health initiatives and spreading awareness through his videos was truly commendable.

Paul's creativity extended beyond the realm of videography. He was also an accomplished musician, with a special talent for playing the guitar. His love for music was infectious, and he generously shared his knowledge by teaching guitar in continuing education classes. Through his teachings, he inspired countless individuals to discover the joy of creating music.

From a young age, Paul's faith played a significant role in his life. As an altar boy in his youth and a devoted member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend, he found solace and strength in his spiritual journey. His unwavering faith served as a guiding light, bringing comfort to those around him.

Paul's artistic spirit extended beyond his professional pursuits. He also found joy in the world of theater, showcasing his acting skills in regional theaters throughout the Oklahoma City area. His performances were captivating, leaving audiences in awe of his talent and dedication.

Beyond his accomplishments, Paul will be remembered for his kind and gentle nature. He had a way of making everyone feel seen and valued, and his infectious laughter could brighten even the darkest of days. His genuine care for others and his ability to uplift those around him will forever be cherished.

Pamela Kaye “Pam” Harris, 69, passed away Dec. 6, 2023, at Azria Health Woodhaven, Great Bend. She was born on Jan. 7, 1954, in Shawnee, Okla., to Raymond and Betty (Whitaker) Harris.

Pam enjoyed sewing, embroidery, and canning. All of these talents were showcased greatly in December as she shined as a “gifter” – gifting these products to loved ones. Potholders, baby blankets, canned okra, and cinnamon candy were a few of the favorites that people “got from Aunt Pam.” Pam was also engaged in assisting with her class reunions and was a doting “dog mom” to five chihuahuas.

Survivors include a daughter, Denise Finlay and husband, Casey; four grandchildren, Lucas, Emily, Ashlyn, Liam; a great-grandchild, Easton; a brother, Tim Harris and wife, Janett; nephew, Clint Harris and wife, Ashleigh; niece, Jamie Taylor, and husband, Straun; and great-nephews and niece, Carter and Dahlia Harris and Creede Taylor.

Pamela 'Pam' Harris, age 69

Charles Kenneth “Chuck” Brown, 91, left this earth to meet his Savior on November 28, 2023, at Medicalodges of Great Bend, Great Bend, KS. Chuck was born March 8, 1932, in Beaver City, NE, to Harry and Estelline (Christensen) Brown. He married Charlene Rae Rowlands on June 9, 1957, in Rifle, CO.

After graduating from Beaver City High School in 1949, Chuck briefly attended college in Fort Collins, CO, before joining the Army. He served with the 61st Infantry, where he was stationed at Fort Carson, CO. He returned to college at University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, CO, where he earned both a B.A. and M.A. in Education. Chuck played both football and basketball in college and while in the army.

For more than 30 years, Chuck coached high school football, basketball, track and any other sport that was needed. He shared his passion with 11 high schools across Nebraska, Colorado, South Dakota and Kansas. He established the wrestling program at Northeast Community College in Norfolk, NE, where he was named in the Bicentennial Edition of Who’s Who in Nebraska. He also served as Activity Director for many years at Youthville in Dodge City, KS.

Always prioritizing God in his life, Chuck was active in church, serving throughout his life as an elder, board chairman, board member, committee chairman, and Bible study, Sunday School, church camp and youth leader. For the last 44 years, he was a member of Community Christian Church, Great Bend, KS.

An avid outdoorsman, Chuck enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, canoeing, golfing, carpentry and gardening, often accompanied by a dog. Saturdays in the fall would always find him cheering on his beloved Nebraska Cornhuskers. He was a member of American Legion Argonne Post 180, and past member of many national teaching and coaching associations, Lions Club, and Boy Scouts of America.

Survivors include wife Charlene, of the home; daughter, Christy Schultz of Great Bend; and chosen family, Carl and Evelyn Harr, Elydia Harr and Ethan Harr, all of Great Bend.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, December 7, 2023, at Community Christian Church, Great Bend, with Pastor Jon Hembree and Pastor Larry Whitbeck presiding. Military Rites will be conducted by Ft. Riley Honor Guard. Ronald Theodore “Ron” Pirtle, 87, passed away December 2, 2023, at Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita, Kansas. He was born on October 11, 1936, in Sedalia, Missouri, to Dwight and Sylvia (Hatfield) Pirtle. On September 24, 1963, he married Rose Mary Gatewood in Sedalia, Missouri.

A resident of Great Bend since 1964, Ron worked as an engineer for KSN. He was a member of the First Christian Church, Sandhill Gun Club, and benefactor member of the NRA. Along with being an accomplished marksman, Ron was a big music man – liking all kinds of music and instruments. He was also interested in model airplanes, photography, and learning and sharing his computer skills.

Survivors include his wife, Rose Mary of the home; two daughters, Vicki Needham and her husband, Conrad, of Hays, and Vandy Simpson and her fiancé, Phil Dierks, of Great Bend; four grandchildren, Julie Thompson, Joshua Simpson, Trey Lumpkins and Rachelle Marie Lumpkins; and one great-grandchild, Sullivan Devlin, with another on the way.

Graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, December 7, 2023, at Hillcrest Memorial Park, with Pastor Dick Ogle presiding. Ronald 'Ron' Pirtle, age 87

LaVon Richard Urban, 75, passed away peacefully in his home in Hoisington on December 1, 2023. He was born August 15, 1948, in Cheyenne Wells, Colorado, the son of Leonard and Matilda “Tillie” Urban. He grew up in Loretta, Kansas and attended school in Bison, Kansas. He proudly served as a A02 in the United States Navy from 1967 to 1970 during the Vietnam War. After which he met his former wife, Donna Hejny and had four children. He was a lifetime farmer and stockman, growing up on the farm and later co-owning a farm with his brothers. He enjoyed helping his brothers on the farm and was always the fix-it man, if there was something that needing fixed he was on the job. He spent many hours in his garage doing all sorts of jobs for friends and family. In addition to farming, LaVon also worked for many years in the oil field, most recently for Mallard Drilling as a tool pusher retiring in 2013.

He was also an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing and just spending time at the lake. He had numerous hobbies and interests throughout life and retirement but his grandchildren and great grandchildren were his main focus. He rarely missed a sporting or school event and looked for every opportunity to bring up how proud he was of them.

Survivors include; three sons, Kelly (Laura) Urban, Kent (Heather) Urban, Kirk (Amanda) Urban, and a daughter, Kenna (Corey) Mercer; six siblings, Ron Urban, Bob Urban, Mike Urban, Mark Urban, Debra Witte, and Charles Urban; numerous nieces and nephews; 14 grandchildren, Avery, Landen, Jenna, Kadence, Olivia, Aleah, Logan, Miriya, Sean, Joshua, Hayden, Kavyn, Kwinn, and Kholette; and four great grandchildren, Linkin, Lukas, Lake, and Evie with one more on the way.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Leonard Urban, Jr.

Friends may sign the book today until Thursday at the funeral home. There will be no viewing as cremation has taken place per LaVon’s wishes.

Inurnment services will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, December 8th, 2023 at Kansas Veteran’s Cemetery, WaKeeney, Kansas, with Father Reggie Urban presiding and military honors conducted by the United States Naval Honor Guard.

Margie Lou Purdy, 88, Rush Center, Kansas, passed away Saturday, December 2, 2023, at Rush County Memorial Hospital, La Crosse, Kansas.

Margie was born January 30, 1935, in Olmitz, Kansas, the daughter of George and Augusta (Springer) Nordman. She was a resident of Rush County, Kansas, since May 1983, moving there from Alamosa, Colorado. She graduated from the Kansas School for the Deaf, Olathe, Kansas. She was a homemaker.

On August 25, 1973, she married Jay M. Purdy at Sacred Heart Church, Alamosa, Colorado. He preceded her in death June 7, 1999.

Survivors include: numerous nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one brother, Maurice Nordman; and three sisters, Alice Oborny, Melba Stos, and Norma Knight.

Visitation (weather permitting) will be Tuesday, December 5, 2023, from 10:30 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. at Great Bend Cemetery, Great Bend, Kansas.

Lillyann Grace Tripp, 1, passed away on Dec. 2, 2023, at the University of Kansas Health Systems - Great Bend Campus. She was born on Sept. 14, 2022, in Great Bend, to Tommy and Shianne (Perkins) Tripp.

“Little Lil,” as she was nicknamed by her parents, was perfect – precious and beautiful. She was loved by many and had a smile that lit up a room.

Survivors include her parents of the home; siblings, Addilynn, Avasue and Lucas Tripp; grandparents, Russell and Patricia De Vorss, and Ed and Dolores Kyler; great-grandparents, Eva and John Arnim, and Mike Perkins; and numerous other loved ones.

Larry Jack Armstrong passed away on Nov 29, 2023, in Larned, surrounded by family and friends.

Jack was born on Oct 5, 1939, to Keith and Hazel (Hartman) Armstrong, in Larned. He was the youngest of four.

Jack joined the Navy after high school, but was honorably discharged after the death of his father, Keith, to come back to help his mother on the family farm.

After returning to Larned, Jack met the love of his life, Jeanetta Mae Osborn (Jeannie), they were married on June 9, 1968. They purchased the farm that had been homesteaded by Jack’s great grandfather. They moved to their farm east of Larned, and would spend the rest of their lives there. Together they raised three children, Aaron, Eric and Alicia.

Jack worked at various jobs after returning to Larned. He started out as a roofer and ended up a postal carrier, but his real passion was the farm and his cattle. After retiring from the post office in 1993, he was able to focus solely on ranching. After retirement, he also developed a love of gardening, and would spend countless hours tending to his plants.

After Jeannie, the farm was Jacks great love, and he poured his heart into it, turning it into an oasis on the plains. He laid the back patio by hand. He turned the hole left from the homemade swimming pool that he had built when his kids were young, into a sunken patio, complete with two ponds and a waterfall made from the foundation of a church that had been in the pasture. Jack always loved a project, and would barely be finished with one, before he was ready to start work on the next “area”. One has to only walk the grounds of the home place to see the love that he had for it.

Jack loved spending time with his children, and was delighted by the arrival of his two granddaughters, who officially made him Papa. Once they were born, he had an endless list of projects to keep him busy for his grand babies. Jack enjoyed going on vacations with his kids, grandkids, and his nieces and nephews.

He loved to explore new places, but his favorite was always the Rocky Mountains.

Jack was an avid football fan, and absolutely loved the Kansas City Chiefs. He was so happy with the Chiefs success the last few years, and loved to watch them with friends and family while enjoying a Coors Light.

Jack was well known for his sharp wit and sense of humor, and kept his sense of humor despite an extended illness that kept him in, more than out, of the hospital the last seven months of his life. He would crack jokes with family, friends and hospital staff alike. His family was told by numerous staff members at various hospitals, that Jack was among their favorite patients because of his sense of humor. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all of the staff at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital. From the Doctor and Nurses, to PT, RT and OT as well as the Housekeeping Staff, every one of them was an angel to our Dad, and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Jack was preceded in death by his father, Keith Armstrong, mother, Hazel Fairchild, brother, Earl Armstrong, brother Don Armstrong, and sister Loal McMillan. He is survived by his wife,

Jeannie, of the home, his son Aaron Armstrong, son Eric (Jen) Armstrong and daughter Alicia (John) Spitler, and two granddaughters, Lela and Mina Spitler, and many nieces and nephews.

Larry Armstrong, age 84

Sylvia Irene Eddingfield, 97, passed away on Nov. 27, 2023, at Pratt Regional Medical Center, Pratt. She was born on Sept. 29, 1926, in Seward, to Eric and Ida (Bunselmeyer) Fischer. On July 16, 1948, she married Don Triplette in Great Bend. He passed on July 12, 1993. She then married Carl Eddingfield on Feb. 14, 1997. He passed on June 21, 2018.

Spending most of her life in Great Bend, Sylvia was a high school graduate from Great Bend High School and attended college at Emporia State Teacher College. She lived in Wichita for 12 years, then returned to Great Bend, working as a breakfast cook at Hardee’s as well as a clerk at Duckwall’s. She was a member of United Church of Christ in Hudson. In 2018, she and Carl moved to Pratt to be near her niece’s family and became a regular attendee at the Pratt Presbyterian Church. Sylvia enjoyed walking, puzzles and time with family. She especially enjoyed spending time with her great-great nieces.

Survivors include nieces, Brenda (Rex) Johnston of Pratt, whom she considered as a daughter, Judy (Tom) Wolf of Cedar Park, Texas, and Nancy (Morris) Kirschberg of San Antonio, Texas; nephews, Robert (Jenny) Glynn of Great Bend, Donnie Glynn of Hudson, Mike Munz of Hudson, and Pat Munz of Wichita; several great nieces and nephews and several great-great nieces and nephews.

In addition to Don and Carl, Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Eunice Miller and Elda Glynn.

Mel D. (Holly) Holopirek, 81,&nbsp;died November 29, 2023 at his home in Maize, Kansas after an extended battle with cancer. Born May 10, 1942 to Ernest and Pauline (Krug) Holopirek, he grew up in the small town of Timken with brothers Rick (Kathy), Ken, and sister Debra (Eric) Kohn. &nbsp; Mel graduated from Bison High School and Fort Hays State College with a B.S. in Business Administration.&nbsp;

Serving his country in the U.S. Air Force, Mel rose to the rank of Captain where he was a Titan II Missile Commander. He and Darnell Keller Heskett eloped August 17, 1969. After making their first home in Tucson, AZ, they returned home to Kansas where career opportunities led to Oakely, Colby, and Ft. Scott. Mel retired as Vice President of Farmers Bank and Trust, Albert, Kansas in 2014.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Mel and Darnell made their final home in Maize. A man of God, his Life Church family was a source of joy and peace for him.&nbsp; Mel will always be remembered as one who dearly loved his family. Preceded in death by his parents, he is survived by his wife of 54 years, Darnell; daughters Terra (Alan) Zerr, Stillwater OK, Jemelle Ebers, Wichita, and son Lander (Kary) Holopirek, Wamego and grandchildren Steele, Shaye, and Stratten Ebers.

Katherine L. George, 90, passed away Nov. 28, 2023, at Diversicare of Larned.

She was born April 7, 1933 in Pawnee County, the daughter of Albert and Olivia Jenisch Debes. She graduated from Zook High School in 1951.

A former resident of Boulder and Louisville, Colo., their family moved to the Larned area in 1993. She was a homemaker and a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Albert, Larned Garden Club, and Zook Community Club. Katherine loved family history, documenting photos, and organizing the family tree. She spent many hours working in her yard, enjoying her beautiful flowers, bird watching, traveling and going on the Extension trips.

On May 30, 1953 she married Lloyd W. George in Albert; he preceded her in death on Feb. 8, 1997.

Survivors include: sister, Pauline (Norman) Herrmann, Kinsley; daughter-in-law, Debra George, Colo.; several nieces and nephews, extended family, and friends.

Katherine George, age 90

Julius Robert “Jule” Scheck, 94, passed away November 23, 2023, at home in Great Bend, Kan. He was born October 27, 1929, in Walker, Kan. to Andrew and Barbara (Vonfeldt) Scheck. Jule married Gretchen (Bradfield) Watkins July 19, 1975, in Great Bend. Gretchen passed away Feb. 24, 2021.

Jule was in the trucking business for 44 years, working for Felton Truckline in Russell coming to Great Bend in 1956; as manager for Knaus Terminal and then employed by Consolidated Freightline by Grave Trucking. He worked for ANR Truckline and Coast Pipeline as senior driver until his retirement in 1990. He was the Union Steward for International Brotherhood of Teamsters, and a member of Prince of Peace Parish, Knights of Columbus Council #862, and Eagles Lodge #646.

Survivors include three daughters, Diana Ellis, Debra Hollins, and Donna Frederick (Terry), all of Overland Park, Kan.; three step sons, Kerry Watkins (Jan) of Great Bend, Kevin Watkins (Pam) of Independence, KS; and Kemper Watkins (Melissa) of Livingston, Texas; step daughter, Shannon Bolding of Great Bend; three grandchildren, six great grandchildren, three step grandchildren, and 3 step great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by six brothers, Andrew Scheck, Richard Scheck, Ray Scheck, John Scheck, infant Joseph Scheck, and Severeign Scheck; and four sisters, Amelia Lange, Helen Woodward, Regina Miller, and Mary Ann Elliott.

A Vigil with Knights of Columbus Rosary will be 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, at Bryant Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 7, 2023, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, with Father Aneesh Parappanattu presiding. Inurnment will follow at Great Bend Cemetery. David Eugene Roberts, 81 of Huntsville, Alabama, passed away on November 25, 2023.

He is survived by his wife, Delene Roberts, children, Roberta Benoit of Corpus Christy, TX, David E. Roberts, Jr. (Michel) of Oklahoma City, OK, Samuel Roberts (Marya) of Denver, CO; sister, Helen Gayle Lank; eight grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Mary Roberts.

He was a native of Eurika, KS and a resident of Madison County since 1993. David was a member of Flint River Baptist Church, The American Legion Post 237, and Apollo Lodge 921. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served his country for four years.

Kenneth C. Seyfert, 85, died November 28, 2023, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, Kansas. He was born July 11, 1938, in Claflin, Kansas, the sixth son of Ted and Emma (Janda) Seyfert. Kenneth graduated in 1956 from Claflin High School and then went on to mechanics trade school in Kansas City.

On January 28, 1961, he married Norma J. Courange in Hoisington.

Kenneth worked as an electrician for the City of Hoisington for thirty-nine years, retiring in 2013.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Norma Seyfert of the home; and three children; Kevin Seyfert and wife Rita of Great Bend, Nancy Crawford and husband Mark of Hoisington, and Kimberly Lange and husband William of Wichita; a brother, Don Seyfert of Ellsworth; eight grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Gene, Alvin, Dale, and Ivan Seyfert.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m., Thursday, with family to greet friends from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

On Nov. 28, 2023, Raymond L. “Ray” Demel passed away peacefully at Medicalodges in Goddard after a long illness. The son of Frank and Mary (Klug) Demel, Ray was born Aug. 3, 1948, in Claflin. In 1972, he married Lois Schnewise; they later divorced. He then married Patricia “Pat” (Stoppel) Keil on Feb. 3, 1979, in Great Bend. To their union, they had a daughter, Melissa R. Demel.

Raymond was a 29-year veteran of the Army and Army Reserves, serving in both Vietnam and Desert Storm. He was honorably retired with the rank of Sergeant First Class. Ray was a great patriot. He enjoyed leading the Color Guard in the Hoisington Labor Day Parade and serval cemeteries on Memorial Day.

Ray worked serval jobs in his lifetime, including for farmers, The Odin Store, Thies Packing Company, beef selector for TopCo and Dillons, the Job Service Center, United Parcel, Exxon, and Bachman Production Specialties. He was a member of the Prince of Peace Parish and a lifetime member of the V.F.W.

Survivors include his wife, Pat, of the home; daughter, Melissa Demel; seven siblings, Delores (Jim) Rosenberg of Simsbury, Conn., Rosemary Schremmer of Hoisington, Robert (Rosemary) Demel of Hoisington, Tom (Darlene) Demel, of Hoisington, Marvin (Phyllis) Demel of Kanopolis, Allen (Margaret) Demel of Elk City, Oklahoma, and Mark (Barbara) Demel of Hoisington; brother-in-law, LeRoy Stoppel; many nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews; and great-great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Frank Demel; brothers-in-law, Kenny Schremmer and Ernest Stoppel; and nephew, Lantz Walters.

Dorthy Lynn Doonan, 74, died November 26, 2023, in Salina, Kansas. She was born July 2, 1949, in Elkins, West Virginia, the daughter of Arnold and Alice (Chewning) Hart. Dorothy graduated from Elkins High School in 1967.

On September 6, 1969, she married Glen A. Doonan in Patuxent River, Maryland. He preceded her in death earlier this year on June 18th.

A Hoisington resident since 1975, coming from Pratt and Great Bend, Dorthy was the Barton County Clerk of the District Court for 23 years retiring in 2012. She enjoyed crocheting and bird watching and was known for the many wedding cakes she made. Family was her most central part of her life and she loved spending time with them.

She is survived by her three children; Jeff Doonan and fiancé Loretta Smith of Hoisington, Lynn Andres and husband Merlyn of Solomon, and Wade Doonan and wife Sandy of Salina; six siblings, John Hart and wife Becky, Joe Hart and wife Kelly, David Hart and wife Kay, Debbie Gainer and husband Harold, Edward Hart, all of Elkins, West Virginia and Steve Hart and wife Carol of Charles Town, West Virginia; six grandchildren, Jacob Andres and wife Jennifer, Shauna Andres and fiancé Krys Lane, Alexis Miller and husband Conlan, Austin Doonan, Kacee Doonan, and Bryce Doonan; and a great grandson, Benjamin Andres.

Dorthy Doonan, age 74

Merle Raymond McLaren,94, of Hays, passed away Monday, Nov. 27, 2023, in Hays. He was born Dec. 23, 1928, in Chicago, Ill., to David and Blanche (Beique) McLaren.

On Jan. 16, 1954, he married Betty Lou Schemm in Wichita. They celebrated 67 years together before her passing on Oct. 14, 2021. Merle left school at 16 years old to help take care of the family after his dad passed but did continue his education later in life ending with a bachelor’s degree from Fort Hays State University.

He later joined the U.S. Air Force and retired after 23 years of service to his country. His service included both Korea and Vietnam in which he received numerous accommodations, including a Bronze Star.

He owned McLaren Lincoln-Mercury-GMC in Hays for 18 years and was one of the original business owners to push for expansion north of I-70. Merle was a member of the Hays VFW and an active member of the Honor Guard. He received a Quilt of Valor. He was chosen as Hays All-American Citizen in 2018, but his greatest joy was family and taking care of his grandkids.

Betty L. (Schemm) McLaren, 87, of Hays, died Thursday, Oct. 14, 2021, at Hays Medical Center, Hays. She was born March 21, 1934, in WaKeeney, the daughter of Joseph and Eva (Schwien) Schemm. Betty was a homemaker and a selfless mother. Her primary concern in life was always the welfare of her family.

She loved people in general and doted on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a graduate of Trego High School, WaKeeney. Her husband, Merle, was a career member of the USAF, and together with their growing family traveled to many areas of the free world.

Survivors include three sons, Robert W. Moos (Dennie) of Great Bend, David Moos of Wichita, and Mike Moos (Stephanie) of Ellinwood; two daughters, Toni Leiker (Don) of Great Bend, and Susan Cain (Alan) of Lyons; 14 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and 6 great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by son, Patrick Moos; one grandson, Ryan Moos; four brothers, Vernon Denney, Cecil Denney, Fred Denney, Dale Denney; and four sisters, Lula Michel, Eunice Lopeman, Mary Seeley, and Ethel Baldwin.

Barbara Kay Guerra, 64, passed away on Nov. 22, 2023, at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, Kansas. She was born on Aug. 11, 1959, in Mechanicsburg, Ohio, to Kenneth Sr., and Nancy (Wilson) Pack. On June 2, 1980, she married Roberto Guerra in Miami, Okla.

A lifetime Barton County resident, Barbara was a homemaker, known for her great cooking. She enjoyed crafting, flower gardening, and attending garage sales. Barbara’s greatest joy was spending time with her family.

Survivors include her husband of the home; two sons, Chai Guerra and wife, Gracie, and Izzy Guerra and wife, Ashley, all of Great Bend; six grandchildren, Ethen, Peyton, Brooks, Teegan, Raquel and Owen; uncles, Al and Keith Pack, both of Ohio; and an aunt, Bea Metz and husband, Steve, of Woodstock, Ohio; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Kenny Wayne Pack; sisters Joanna Hickman and Patricia Pack; uncle, Keith Stevens; and an aunt, Louise Meadows.

Matthew Ryan “Matt” Deschner, 41, passed away on November 25, 2023, at his home in Great Bend, Kansas. He was born on May 21, 1982, in Hays, Kansas, to Bradley and Karry (Boyd) Deschner.

A lifetime Barton County resident, Matt worked as a truck driver. Growing up, he attended Trinity Lutheran Church. Matt was a member of the Kansas Motocross Championship Series (KMCS) and enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing darts, spending time with family and friends – he didn’t know a stranger and was a friend to all, but most importantly, spending time with his son, tinkering on motocross bikes.

Survivors include a son, Tyler Deschner of Burrton; his father, Brad, of Great Bend; a brother, Josh Deschner and wife, Tiffany, of Valley Center; a sister, Barbie VanderGiesen and husband, Blake, of Great Bend; nephews, Cole Deschner, and Bankston and Bishop VanderGiesen; nieces, Brooke, Paige and Quinn Deschner; co-parent, Candra Ruppe; and among numerous friends and loved ones, special friends Koen, Jake, Trent, Chelsea, Aaron, Taree, Troy and April.

Matthew 'Matt' Deschner, age 41

Douglas Rex Hilton, beloved husband, son, father, eldest brother and Papa, passed away in his home with the comfort of his family Nov. 17, 2023.

Born in California and raised in Kansas, Doug became an avid spectator of all sports, especially those involving his family. Doug will be best remembered within the Great Bend community because of his bigger-than-life persona and his raw athletic ability. Doug's laughter had such bass, it could be heard by all the children playing downstairs during the holidays; and when Doug spoke, people listened. He enjoyed spending time with his family, including three-wheeling, hunting and fishing. Doug's eyes really lit up when talking about childhood memories and all the times he got in trouble with his mother, but it was usually the fault of his siblings.

Doug was involved in many sports throughout his life including rodeo, arm wrestling, softball and track and field, but he was best known for his time spend on the football field at Great Bend High School. His size and quickness earned him All-State honors for offensive line and defensive line. He was heavily recruited by major universities including Notre Dame, USC, UCLA, Ohio State and KSU.

Doug is preceded in death by his parents Rodney Keith Hilton and Veda Hilton, and his wife Karen Hilton. Those left to cherish his memory include his sister Vicky Mitchell and Lee Mitchell; brother Lyle; brother Steve and wife Dara; the children he loved and called his own, son Dale and his wife Jana; daughter Cary Hilton; stepson Jason Myers; and stepdaughter Janette Linsky and husband Russ, Donna Ramsey. Survivors also include his grandkids Alexis Hurd, Jaylin Brown and fiancé John Boese, Trey Hurd, Brendon Hilton, Jonathan Hilton, Caroline Linsky, Charlotte Linsky, Danton Hilton and Daymon Hilton; three great grandchildren, five nephews, and three nieces.&nbsp;

Douglas Hilton

Dortha Keenan passed away on November 22, 2023 at Overland Park, KS. She was born January 11, 1935 to Clyde Willis and Lela (Williamson) Willis in Ada, OK. As a young child, she and her family moved to Salem, IL. She enjoyed her time there and had many good memories. In 1945, the family moved to Great Bend, KS. She remembered the celebration of World War II on Main Street with confetti, singing and dancing.

She graduated from Great Bend High School and attended Hutchinson Junior College. In 1956 she married Patrick Keenan at St. Rose Catholic Church in Great Bend. She was a housewife and mother until 1969 when she received her Kansas Real Estate License. Dortha often said that being in real estate was such a good fit for her because she enjoyed helping friends and relatives, but also meeting new people and showcasing interesting homes. She was proud to be among the first Realtors in Great Bend to earn the Certified Real Estate Specialist (CRS) and Certified Real Estate Broker (CRB) designations and was a graduate of the Realtor Institute (GRI). She is a member of the Kansas Real Estate Honor Society, was named 1982 Realtor of the Year, and was the first female President of the Great Bend Board of Realtors in 1982, and again in 1992 and 1993. She was president of the St Rose Altar Society, member of the Great Bend Pilot Club and active in the ACTS ministry at Prince of Peace Parish.

Dortha was proud to live in Great Bend, promoting it in any way she could. She became an early member of the Chamber of Commerce, lasting 38 years. She chaired the Chamber’s Beautification Committee for nine years, the initial project of which lined Broadway’s islands with decorative bricks and flower planters.

Though her real estate career and civic involvement brought her fulfillment, it was her family who always came first. Family dinner was always the high point of the day.

Survivors include her four children, Kelly and wife Sharon Beemer of Houston, Carrie Keenan Nash and husband Todd of Boulder, Cade and wife Sara of Kansas City, Chris of Minneapolis, and eight grandchildren: Connor Nash, Parker Nash and wife Veronica, Audrey Keenan, Samuel Keenan, Annie Keenan, Katherine Keenan, Emma Keenan, and Madeline Keenan. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Patrick Keenan.

Dortha Keenan, age 88

On the afternoon of November 19, 2023, Betty Louise Toot passed away at the age of 98, in Amarillo, TX. Born on July 16, 1925, in Belpre, KS, Betty was the ninth child of Maurice and Mabel Montgomery. With 11 sisters and three brothers, there was always someone to play with and Betty remained close to her siblings throughout their lives. She graduated from Belpre High School and sometime after met Calvin L Toot at a Hug and Stomp Dance held at the Community Center. Calvin enlisted and Betty followed him to San Francisco where they married on August 2, 1945. A young war bride, Betty worked as both a waitress and a telephone operator while Calvin was a gunner on the USS Fair in the Pacific Fleet. Deployment also took them to Seattle, WA until Calvin’s release from the Navy when they returned to Larned, KS to work the family farm. The Toots also resided in Hill City, KS and then Liberal, KS where Betty lived for more than 56 years. She worked in the cafeteria at West Junior High which allowed her to be home when her children were not in school. After they were grown, she went to work at Southwest Medical Center as a cook and was promoted to Supervisor. She worked early mornings and delighted in the days when her visiting grandchildren would stop by to eat breakfast or lunch at the hospital cafeteria with her. She was then free to spend the afternoon and evenings with her family, cooking for them, taking an evening walk, and hearing about their lives. After retirement, Betty enjoyed traveling to visit her family, her daily walks, and volunteering at the hospital gift shop. A lifelong gardener, Betty cared for her flower beds and continued to mow the lawn herself until her move to Amarillo, TX.

Betty is preceded in death by her husband, Calvin L Toot. They had been married for 55 years. She is survived by her daughters Linda (Bill) Morlan of Overland Park, KS; Judy (Mike) Connelly of Amarillo, TX; David Toot of Granbury, TX; and Colin (Cindy) Toot of Kingsland, TX and her sister Marietta Snodgrass of Pinole, CA. Betty was proud of her 16 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her honor to further Macular Degeneration Research through the Brightfocus Foundation (brightfocus.org/macular). Betty will be laid to rest at a graveside service in Belpre Cemetery (KS) on Saturday, November 25, 2023, at 1 p.m. Honorary pallbearers are her grandsons: Brian Mitchell, Joshua Connelly, Shawn Toot, Jeremy Berry, Toby Lohman Fuller, Daniel Connelly, Cameron Toot, Zachary Toot, and Adam Brown. A woman of strength, love, humor and enduring grace, Betty’s memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew her.
