Jendee L. Dalton, 45, Bison, Kansas, passed away Sunday, November 12, 2023, at Rush County Memorial Hospital, La Crosse, Kansas.

Jendee was born October 26, 1978, in Hays, Kansas, the daughter of DeWayne and Vicky (Serpan) Foos. She was a lifelong resident of Rush County, Kansas. 

Jendee was a 1997 graduate of La Crosse High School, La Crosse, Kansas, and a 2000 graduate of Crum’s Beauty College, Manhattan, Kansas. In 2004, she graduated from Fort Hays State University, Hays, Kansas, with a bachelor of science degree in criminal justice.

Jendee began her criminal justice career at the Larned State Hospital, Larned, Kansas, as a guard in the juvenile facility. After the birth of her first child, she began working for the Department for Children and Families as an eligibility specialist. In 2014, Jendee began her dream job as a court services officer for the Kansas 20th Judicial District. In 2022, she transferred to her home district, the Kansas 24th Judicial District. While working for the Kansas 24th Judicial District, Jendee not only served as a court services officer, but also as a Community Corrections intake officer until her health would not allow her to do so.

She attended St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse, Kansas, and was a member of KACSO (Kansas Association of Court Services Officers), APPA (American Probation and Parole Association), KAMA (Kansas Academy of Mediators &amp; Arbitrators). She was a former board member of the Bison Community Library, Bison, Kansas.

On October 28, 2006, she married Robert D. Dalton at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse, Kansas.

Survivors include her husband, Robert D. Dalton, Bison, Kansas; her two sons, Gratton and Rennick Dalton, Bison, Kansas; her mother and father, Vicky and DeWayne Foos, Eureka Springs, Arkansas; her mother and father-in-law, Mary and Robert Dalton, Bison, Kansas; her brother, Jeremy Foos (Lisa), and their children, Cody and Morgan, Goddard, Kansas; and her paternal grandmother, Mary Steitz, La Crosse, Kansas.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfathers, Marvin Foos, and Leland Steitz; and her maternal grandparents, Charley and Vernita Serpan.

Visitation will be Wednesday, November 15, 2023, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, Kansas, with the family receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A vigil service and rosary will be at 7:00 p.m.

Church visitation will be Thursday, November 16, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. to 9:50 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse, Kansas.

Funeral service will be Thursday, November 16, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse, Kansas, with Father Stephen Dabanka and Father Edmond Kline officiating. Interment will be in the La Crosse City Cemetery, La Crosse, Kansas.

Jendee L. Dalton

David Francis Keeler, 66, passed away November 13, 2023, at the University of Kansas Health System – Great Bend Campus. He was born January 16, 1957, at Great Bend, to Darrell and Edith (Schwartz) Keeler.

A lifetime Great Bend resident, David was a 40-year dedicated worker for the City of Great Bend in the street and park departments, most recently working at the Great Bend Cemetery. In his early years, he worked for Don’s Food Market and Great Bend Manufacturing. David was a motorcycle and gun enthusiast, and was considered extremely handy, especially being accomplished in concrete work and woodworking. He enjoyed deer and turkey hunting, and time spent with family and friends.

Survivors include, his mother, Edith Keeler; his longtime companion, Cheryl Turner; a sister, Nancy Crawford; two nephews, Anthony Crawford and Alex Crawford; a niece, Emily Crawford; great nephew, Jayden Crawford and great niece, Maddie Beagle, all of Great Bend. He was preceded in death by his father, Darrell Keeler; and a brother-in-law, Mike Crawford.

Maynard Melvin Steitz, 90, La Crosse, Kansas, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, November 8, 2023, at Locust Grove Village, La Crosse, Kansas.

Maynard was born January 25, 1933, on a farm north of Bison, Kansas, the son of Jake and Elizabeth (Wilhelm) Steitz.

He was a 1951 graduate of Bison High School, Bison, Kansas. He graduated from Fort Hays Kansas State College, Hays, Kansas, in 1955 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in economics and business administration.

He was a Navy aviation pilot and flew an F9F Cougar jet aircraft. After the service, he held various positions in the Federal Aviation Administration as a flight safety officer.

Maynard enjoyed golf, reading, and traveled to numerous destinations in and outside of the United States. He was a resident of La Crosse, Kansas, since 2010. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Otis, Kansas.

He is survived by one sister, Wilma Steadman, La Crosse, Kansas; two sisters in law, Mary Steitz, La Crosse, Kansas, and Beverly Steitz, Inola, Oklahoma; and 17 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister, Leona Steitz; four brothers, Victor, Reinhold, Eberhardt and Leland Steitz; and three sisters, Verneta Healzer, Leona Keil, and Ruby Shank.

Graveside service and interment will be Tuesday, November 14, 2023, at 10:30 A.M. at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Otis, Kansas, with Pastor Phyllis Burdge officiating.

Maynard Steitz, age 90

Eleanor Josephine Bauer, 91, passed away Nov. 9, 2023, at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital, Larned.

She was born Sept. 15, 1932, in Ellinwood, the daughter of David Frederick and Frances Josephine Sprinker Hammeke. She was raised in Ellinwood and graduated from Ellinwood High School. She moved to Burdett in 1952. She was a homemaker, loved cooking and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Sacred Heart Altar Society, Holy Rosary Altar Society and Burdett Seniors.

On April 26, 1952, she married Lawrence L. Bauer in Ellinwood; he passed away Dec. 6, 2013.

Survivors include; four sons, Tom (Karen) Bauer, Denton, Texas, Brad (Shelley) Bauer, Burdett, Alan (Mary) Bauer, Rogers, Ark., and Dana Bauer, Burdett; one daughter, Annette (Kent) Reece, Burdett; two brothers, Robert (Bernadine) Hammeke, Rozel and Richard Hammeke, Ellinwood; two sister-in-laws, Louise Hammeke and Angie Hammeke, both of Ellinwood; 13 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by; her parents; four sisters, Ethel Ringwald, Bernice Bryant, Kathleen Dauber, and Alice Fountain; two brothers, Vernon Hammeke and Keith Hammeke.

Eleanor Bauer, age 91

Lawrence "Lawdy" Herman, age 87 of Ellis, Kansas passed away Tuesday, November 7, 2023 at HaysMed.&nbsp;

Lawdy was born on August 9, 1936, on the family farmstead in Trego County, Kansas to Nick and Anna (Lang) Herman.

Lawdy was a lifelong resident of the area and graduated from Ellis High School in 01956. 

On June 20, 1959 he married JoAnn Gabel, but later divorced.

Lawdy was a legend all his own, always living life to the fullest. He was always happy and wanted others to be “happy, happy, happy.” 

He dedicated many years of his life to working in the oilfield, a job that he took great pride in.&nbsp;

He was a lover of polka, pinochle, golfing, and hunting. However, his greatest joy came from being with his beloved friends and family. He liked his beer, he never wanted anyone to be thirsty. He never let a kid come into his house without offering a pop or popsicle. 

He was a devoted Catholic and faithful member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.&nbsp;Lawdy was a member of the Ellis Knights of Columbus 3rd and 4th degree. 

He loved his cars, especially his ‘57 Chevy and his Roadrunner. On a nice sunny day, you could find him in “Lawdys Fun Haven” throwing shoes and by dark, playing cards. He was always surrounded by friends and family, and Jack “the bodyguard” never left his side.

He cherished his role as a father to his daughter Peggy Deutscher and his two sons, Randy Herman and Sam Herman. The importance of family was immeasurable.

Surviving him are his children, Peggy (Herman) Deutscher, Randy Herman and wife Debbie, and Sam Herman; two brothers Ervin (Sunny) Herman of Ellis and LeRoy Herman of Denver. Additionally, he leaves behind grandchildren Jared Deutscher, Bailey (Matt) Dinkel, Kiley Herman, and Jose Herman as well as great-grandchildren Hattee Deutscher, Sutton Dinkel, and Jentry Dinkel.

He is preceded in death by his parents Nick and Anna Herman; brothers Theodore, Clarence, and Louis; sisters Sr. Annice, Laurine, Lydia, Stella, Bernice, and Rita.

Services in care of Keithley Funeral Chapel; 400 E. 17th Ellis, KS 67637.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 13, 2023 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ellis. Inurnment will follow in the church cemetery.

Memorial visitation will be 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Sunday with a combined rosary and parish vigil at 6:30 p.m., all at the church.

Lawrence 'Lawdy' Herman

Rose Marie Frieb, 94, died Nov. 7, 2023, surrounded by her family, at River Bend Assisted Living, Great Bend. She was born Dec. 15, 1928, at St. Rose Hospital in Great Bend, the daughter of Adolph and Rose (Hickey) Bahr. Rose graduated from St. Ann’s Catholic School in Olmitz and then went on to receive her registered nursing degree from St. Rose School of Nursing.

On July 16, 1952, she married her high school sweetheart, Marion Francis Frieb at St. Ann Catholic Church in Olmitz. To this union were blessed six children which they raised together on the farm south of Olmitz. Rose was a talented crafter and seamstress, making all of her kids clothing. She had a green thumb and enjoyed gardening. She was a proud grandma and great grandma, that will be remembered for her good cooking especially at Christmas which was her favorite holiday.

Rose was a lifelong member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church and Altar Society.

She is survived by her six children; Carol Scheuerman (Craig) of Bison, Cathi Farha (Ned) of Wichita, Anita Hobbs (Bruce) of Mount Hope, Daniel Frieb (Teresa) of Olmitz, Timothy Frieb (Amy) of Olmitz, and Jan Frieb of Hutchinson; a brother, Eugene Bahr of Olmitz; brother-in-law, Neil Frieb of Olmitz; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren with one more on the way.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, Roland Bahr, and sister, Teresa “Tessie” Jilg.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home. Family will greet friends at St. Ann’s Catholic Church from 6 to 8 p.m., with Vigil and Rosary to begin at 7 p.m..

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 11, 2023, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Olmitz, celebrated by Father Warren Stecklein. Burial will follow in St. Ann’s Cemetery, Olmitz.

 </figure>Rose Marie Frieb, 94, died Nov. 7, 2023, surrounded by her family, at River Bend Assisted Living, Great Bend. She was born Dec. 15, 1928, at St. Rose Hospital in Great Bend, the daughter of Adolph and Rose (Hickey) Bahr. Rose graduated from St. Ann’s Catholic School in Olmitz and then went on to receive her registered nursing degree from St. Rose School of Nursing.On July 16, 1952, she married her high school sweetheart, Marion Francis Frieb at St. Ann Catholic Church in Olmitz. To this union were blessed six children which they raised together on the farm south of Olmitz. Rose was a talented crafter and seamstress, making all of her kids clothing. She had a green thumb and enjoyed gardening. She was a proud grandma and great grandma, that will be remembered for her good cooking especially at Christmas which was her favorite holiday.Rose was a lifelong member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church and Altar Society.She is survived by her six children; Carol Scheuerman (Craig) of Bison, Cathi Farha (Ned) of Wichita, Anita Hobbs (Bruce) of Mount Hope, Daniel Frieb (Teresa) of Olmitz, Timothy Frieb (Amy) of Olmitz, and Jan Frieb of Hutchinson; a brother, Eugene Bahr of Olmitz; brother-in-law, Neil Frieb of Olmitz; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren with one more on the way.She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, Roland Bahr, and sister, Teresa “Tessie” Jilg.Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home. Rose Frieb, age 94

Libbie Ann Olson, 95, passed away November 7, 2023 peacefully at River Bend Assisting Living in Great Bend, KS. Libbie was born in Omaha, NE on October 13, 1928, to Frank and Bozena Storch. She married Cedric Olson in 1951 in Omaha, NE. For their honeymoon, they traveled to Great Bend, KS where they moved soon after and spent the rest of their days.

Libbie graduated from Nebraska State Teacher’s College in Kearney, NE in 1950 and earned her master’s degree in library science from Emporia State University in 1970. She taught one year in Omaha, NE and then 40 years in Great Bend. She was a kindergarten teacher at Park School for 15 years, elementary librarian for 5 years and then moved to Great Bend High School where she was the Head Librarian. She thoroughly enjoyed working with children. One of her biggest professional endeavors was establishing the modern library system for GBHS.

Libbie served as Secretary, Vice-President and President of Great Bend Chapter of National Education Association in which she was instrumental in getting equal pay for women and men teachers. She helped organize the Central Kansas Kindergarten Teachers Association. She received the Master Teacher Award in 1991, which she was most proud of. Libbie and Ced were members of the Kansas Quarter Horse Association. They made lifelong friendships and devoted many miles supporting their daughters and their horses. They were instrumental in promoting the Barton County 4H Horse program. Other professional memberships include KNEA, Kansas Association of School Librarians and Delta Kappa Gamma, PEO, Cosmopolitan Study Club and RSVP. Libbie was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Great Bend where she was active as a Deacon, Elder for the church and active on various church committees.

After caring for her husband Ced, she moved into Great Bend from the country and continued to pour her heart and time into her church and family. She was an avid traveler, visiting friends and family. But what she most enjoyed was the activities involving her four grandchildren. She could always be counted on to help with a school paper, keep the correct tennis score at their many matches and be ready with a tin of homemade cookies and coffee cake at Christmas. She was their biggest cheerleader, especially for educational endeavors. She was most proud of all grandchildren graduating from college and reaching their degree goals.

She will be greatly missed by two her daughters Nancy (John) Francis of Great Bend and Jane Gunn-McRae (Terry) of Topeka; four grandchildren, Lauren (Jeremiah) Jones of Lakewood, CO, Leslie (Nick) Klug of Great Bend, Garrett (Natasha) Gunn of Topeka and Morgan Francis of Hermosa Beach, CA; two step grandchildren, Josh (Kelly) McRae of Overland Park and Justin McRae of Eudora; four great grandchildren, Olivia and Liam Klug of Great Bend, and William and Libbie Jones of Lakewood, CO; and two step great grandchildren, Keegan and Kade McRae. She is also survived by brother, Dr. Vladimir (Gloria) Storch of Omaha, NE along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and sisters Dramy Smith of Grand Island, NE and Bozena Drozda of Omaha, NE. Libbie Olson, age 95

Miltonvale - Richard Gary Hatfield, 69, passed away November 4, 2023 in Wichita.

He was born January 14, 1954, in Laxeu, France, the son of Richard Terry and Ruby Lorraine Fleming Hatfield. He grew up in Herington, Kansas. He lived and taught in White City, Bazine, Larned for thirteen years and Miltonvale for fifteen years.

He graduated from Emporia State University with his teaching degree and recieved his Master’s degree from Friends University, Wichita. He was a church board member at the Miltonvale Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association, Kansas National Education Association, Larned Country Club and Miltonvale Golf Course. Rick enjoyed anything sports, coaching, playing golf, watching westerns, and loved spending time with his grandkids.

On December 21, 1974 he married Darylene Sue France in Hope, Kansas.

Survivors include: his wife, Darylene Sue Hatfield, Miltonvale; two daughters, Carrie (Tyler) Olson, Liberty, Missouri and Christina (Todd) Kieffer, Kansas City, Missouri, son, Casey (Kaitlyn) Hatfield, Larned; six grandchildren, Grady and Gavin Olson, Wyatt and Weston Kieffer, Colby and Collins Hatfield; brother-in-law, Rodney (Betty) France, Edmond, Oklahoma; 3 nieces and nephews, Ash (Dawna) Noble, Brooke (Blake) Watkins, and Jacob (Kasei) France, and four great nieces, Natalie, Hayzlie, Fallan and Nora.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Ruby Hatfield and his father and mother-in-law Lloyd and Miriam France.

Linda Jean Mowery-Denning, 74, of Salina, KS, passed away Saturday, Nov. 4, 2023.

Linda was born April 8, 1949, in Kansas City, MO. She was raised by her parents, Ralph S. Mowery and Veora Mowery in Bluffton, Indiana. She married Peter Alan Denning of Salina on September 4, 1982.

Linda graduated from Ball State University and eventually made her way to Salina in the 1970s where she began her journalism career with the Salina Journal. She was with the Salina Journal for 26 years before she left to begin the Ellsworth County Independent, now the Ellsworth County Independent-Reporter. She semi-retired in 2022, but she continued to write and report for the newspaper as well as her start-up magazine, The Magazine, a publication focused on Saline County and Northcentral Kansas.

Linda was preceded in death by her husband, Peter; her loving parents and in-laws, Art and Winnie Denning; and her brother-in-law, Jim Carrigan. She is survived by her two children, Matthew Denning of Salina and Allyn ‘Allie’ Denning of Lawrence. She is also survived by her brothers and sisters-in law, Diane Carrigan of Salina, Russ and Renee Denning of Overland Park, David and Ginger Denning of Manhattan, and her many nieces and nephews.

Linda Denning

Nicolette Lynn Unruh-Uhl, 36, passed away on November 3, 2023, near Manhattan, Kansas. She was born on October 25, 1987, in Great Bend, Kansas, to Dale and Bernadette “Berny” (Pachta) Unruh. On October 15, 2022, she married Nathan “Nate” Uhl at the Unruh Family Farm. She also gained a son, Tristen Uhl. Together they were working to remodel a big beautiful home in the country near Manhattan.

She was baptized at St. Edwards Catholic Church, Belleville, Kansas by Fr. Don Zimmerman. She received her first Holy Communion and Confirmation at Sacred Heart, Larned, Kansas. She was very ecumenical- she loved to attend Vacation Bible School at all the churches including Bergthal Mennonite Church, New Jerusalem Church, Peace Lutheran and the Christian Church. She graduated 8th grade from Pawnee Rock School and graduated from Larned High School.

Nicolette graduated from Bethany College in Lindsborg with a degree in Communications/Theatre and a Leadership certificate. In October 2009, Nicolette was elected Homecoming Queen of Bethany College. She then obtained a Masters Business Administration from Kansas Wesleyan University.

She grew up on a farm near Pawnee Rock, Kansas. The farm shaped Nicolette’s life. She learned about hard work, sacrifice and determination. It was a great day when she got to go home to the farm to ride on the combine with Adam, spend time with her dad in the truck or help her mom deliver meals to the field. She loved her family beyond words, she was always looking up new activities to plan for family gatherings. Thanksgiving and Christmas were her favorite time of year because she could close the restaurant and spend time with her loved ones, she cherished those times. Being a big sister was her favorite thing, she constantly was checking in on her siblings and see what she could do to help. She was a true advocate of agriculture and was insistent about using local products for her restaurant whenever possible.

She also loved nature and loved to be outside to just take a walk with Nate or her dogs. She loved hiking and Nate, Nic and Tristen had plans to visit every National Park. She loved snowboarding, horseback riding, gardening, reading and a good movie.

Work to Nicolette was not a chore, it was just her purpose in life. She applied to work at Dairy Queen at age 14 but Ernie wouldn’t let her start until she turned 15. When she headed off to college at Lindsborg, she went to Salina and applied at Martinelli’s and she called home to tell us that she was sure they were going to hire her so she went and bought a pair of black pants and a white shirt just in case they called. Tony did hire her.

After working and managing at Martinelli’s Little Italy in for over 15 years, Nicolette stepped out to build Nico’s Little Italy from the ground up. There were many people who helped her but she could not have done it with her sidekick Skyler. As an operating partner of Nico’s Little Italy in Manhattan, Kansas she wanted to build a community of service within her restaurant and make sure everyone who walked in the door felt welcome. Her employees and staff were of utmost importance to her. She set her expectations high and pushed hard to make sure each person had an opportunity to make themselves the best that they could be. Some may have thought she was mean or tough but she would not have pushed so hard if she did not believe that you could be better. Working together as a team was also very important to her, so Nic and Skyler planned staff parties for them to practice team building in a fun way.

After Nicolette’s very first 4-H talk at 4-H Day and her first county fair, she was hooked on 4-H. One year she took 43 projects to the county fair and drove her family crazy. She loved the clothing, foods, swine and most of all the dog project. Nicolette was a state project winner in the Reading project and traveled to National 4-H Congress and also to Citizenship Washington Focus in Washington DC. Her love for 4-H was rooted deep and she applied to be a 4-H Extension Agent. She served in Midway District in Ellsworth and Russell counties and loved working with the 4-H families “To Make the Best Better”. Her Extension family loved her for her new creative ideas and her hard work ethic. She did not quit until the job was done. She then was encouraged to work with the camping programs at Rock Springs Ranch 4-H Center near Junction City.

Nicolette always said, “the most important things in life are: God, Family, Friends and my dogs”. There were definitely times when her dogs, Annie and Oakley, were more important than family and friends. Her sister had to constantly remind her that she could not adopt every dog that she fell in love with, but she definitely would have.

She had so many talents and so many things she loved to do and she gave it all when she decided on a project. Cheerleading was her sport. She cheered at Pawnee Rock Junior High and Larned High School. When she was heart-broken about not being selected as cheerleader her senior year, she did not give up. She signed up for a gymnastic class and also signed up to be a wrestling manager and made some amazing new friends. She went on to cheer at Bethany for four years and another year at Kansas Wesleyan. Nicolette also coached the cheer squad at Sacred Heart High School in Salina. Her next step was to judge at NAIA cheer competitions. Nicolette was her brother Grant’s best cheerleader. She loved to come back and see him play.

Nicolette loved to travel. As a sophomore in high school, she worked three jobs so she could go to Australia on a 4-H exchange trip. She stayed with the Low family and milked cows during the three-week stay! Nicolette was privileged to a college study abroad trip for a semester in Rome, Italy. She returned to Italy an additional two more times. She also spent 40 days in 18 different countries in 2018.

Nicolette loved to sing. She was four years old and sang “Away in the Manger” at the church Christmas program. She had such a difficult time choosing an instrument for band because she wanted to play all of them. She finally chose the French horn. She would always arrange her

class schedule to make time for both band and vocal music classes. Nicolette received many honors for her vocal and band talent and went on to play and sing all four years at Bethany. She loved singing in the The Messiah at Lindsborg. The Bethany Vocal group traveled to Sweden, Norway and Germany to share their beautiful voices.

Last but certainly not least, Nicolette loved to share her talents in the theatre. When she tried out for “Godspell” as a freshman she called home and told us she probably would not get a part but at least she tried. But she did get one of the main parts and honestly felt guilty that she took it away from another junior or senior student. But she loved her time with Bethany theatre and it lead her to work with Broadway RFD in Lindsborg, KS. “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown” was one of her favorite productions.

A production dearest to her heart was the Pawnee Rock Easter Pageant, “The Way of the Cross.” It is held every other year on Easter morning. She would drive back for practices and was willing to work on every detail to make it a beautiful, meaningful production. Nicolette played the part of Mary Magdalene. The life and death of our Lord Jesus became real to her through her study of the scripture and of Mary, the mother of Jesus.

Survivors includes her husband Nate of the home; stepson, Tristen Uhl of Manhattan, Kansas; parents, Dale and Berny Unruh of Great Bend, Kansas; two brothers, Adam Unruh of Pawnee Rock, and Grant Unruh of Carleton, Nebraska; a sister, Danette Unruh of Esbon; grandmothers, Wynona Unruh of Great Bend and Carol Pachta of Belleville; in-laws, Bobby and Patricia Uhl of Texas; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins; and her beloved dogs, Annie and Oakley.

She was preceded in death by her grandfathers, Grant Olin Unruh and Edward Pachta.

Visitation with family receiving friends will be held Thursday, November 9, 2023, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with vigil and rosary at 7:00 p.m. at St. Thomas Moore Catholic Church, Manhattan, Kansas. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, November 10, 2023, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church with Father Don Zimmerman presiding. Additional visitation will take place from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, November 10, 2023 and 9:00 a.m. To 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 11, 2023, both at Bryant Funeral Home, Great Bend, Kansas. Interment will take place at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 11, 2023, in Bergthal Mennonite Cemetery in Pawnee Rock, Kansas.  </figure>Nicolette Lynn Unruh-Uhl, 36, passed away on November 3, 2023, near Manhattan, Kansas. She was born on October 25, 1987, in Great Bend, Kansas, to Dale and Bernadette “Berny” (Pachta) Unruh. On October 15, 2022, she married Nathan “Nate” Uhl at the Unruh Family Farm. She also gained a son, Tristen Uhl. Together they were working to remodel a big beautiful home in the country near Manhattan.She was baptized at St. Edwards Catholic Church, Belleville, Kansas by Fr. Don Zimmerman. She received her first Holy Communion and Confirmation at Sacred Heart, Larned, Kansas. She was very ecumenical- she loved to attend Vacation Bible School at all the churches including Bergthal Mennonite Church, New Jerusalem Church, Peace Lutheran and the Christian Church. She graduated 8th grade from Pawnee Rock School and graduated from Larned High School.Nicolette graduated from Bethany College in Lindsborg with a degree in Communications/Theatre and a Leadership certificate. In October 2009, Nicolette was elected Homecoming Queen of Bethany College. She then obtained a Masters Business Administration from Kansas Wesleyan University.She grew up on a farm near Pawnee Rock, Kansas. The farm shaped Nicolette’s life. She learned about hard work, sacrifice and determination. It was a great day when she got to go home to the farm to ride on the combine with Adam, spend time with her dad in the truck or help her mom deliver meals to the field. She loved her family beyond words, she was always looking up new activities to plan for family gatherings. Thanksgiving and Christmas were her favorite time of year because she could close the restaurant and spend time with her loved ones, she cherished those times. Being a big sister was her favorite thing, she constantly was checking in on her siblings and see what she could do to help. She was a true advocate of agriculture and was insistent about using local products for her restaurant whenever possible.She also loved nature and loved to be outside to just take a walk with Nate or her dogs. She loved hiking and Nate, Nic and Tristen had plans to visit every National Park. She loved snowboarding, horseback riding, gardening, reading and a good movie.Work to Nicolette was not a chore, it was just her purpose in life. She applied to work at Dairy Queen at age 14 but Ernie wouldn’t let her start until she turned 15. When she headed off to college at Lindsborg, she went to Salina and applied at Martinelli’s and she called home to tell us that she was sure they were going to hire her so she went and bought a pair of black pants and a white shirt just in case they called. Tony did hire her.After working and managing at Martinelli’s Little Italy in for over 15 years, Nicolette stepped out to build Nico’s Little Italy from the ground up. There were many people who helped her but she could not have done it with her sidekick Skyler. As an operating partner of Nico’s Little Italy in Manhattan, Kansas she wanted to build a community of service within her restaurant and make sure everyone who walked in the door felt welcome. Her employees and staff were of utmost importance to her. She set her expectations high and pushed hard to make sure each person had an opportunity to make themselves the best that they could be. Some may have thought she was mean or tough but she would not have pushed so hard if she did not believe that you could be better. Working together as a team was also very important to her, so Nic and Skyler planned staff parties for them to practice team building in a fun way.After Nicolette’s very first 4-H talk at 4-H Day and her first county fair, she was hooked on 4-H. One year she took 43 projects to the county fair and drove her family crazy. She loved the clothing, foods, swine and most of all the dog project. Nicolette was a state project winner in the Reading project and traveled to National 4-H Congress and also to Citizenship Washington Focus in Washington DC. Her love for 4-H was rooted deep and she applied to be a 4-H Extension Agent. She served in Midway District in Ellsworth and Russell counties and loved working with the 4-H families “To Make the Best Better”. Her Extension family loved her for her new creative ideas and her hard work ethic. She did not quit until the job was done. She then was encouraged to work with the camping programs at Rock Springs Ranch 4-H Center near Junction City.Nicolette always said, “the most important things in life are: God, Family, Friends and my dogs”. There were definitely times when her dogs, Annie and Oakley, were more important than family and friends. Her sister had to constantly remind her that she could not adopt every dog that she fell in love with, but she definitely would have.She had so many talents and so many things she loved to do and she gave it all when she decided on a project. Cheerleading was her sport. She cheered at Pawnee Rock Junior High and Larned High School. When she was heart-broken about not being selected as cheerleader her senior year, she did not give up. She signed up for a gymnastic class and also signed up to be a wrestling manager and made some amazing new friends. She went on to cheer at Bethany for four years and another year at Kansas Wesleyan. Nicolette also coached the cheer squad at Sacred Heart High School in Salina. Her next step was to judge at NAIA cheer competitions. Nicolette was her brother Grant’s best cheerleader. She loved to come back and see him play.Nicolette loved to travel. As a sophomore in high school, she worked three jobs so she could go to Australia on a 4-H exchange trip. She stayed with the Low family and milked cows during the three-week stay! Nicolette was privileged to a college study abroad trip for a semester in Rome, Italy. She returned to Italy an additional two more times. She also spent 40 days in 18 different countries in 2018.Nicolette loved to sing. She was four years old and sang “Away in the Manger” at the church Christmas program. She had such a difficult time choosing an instrument for band because she wanted to play all of them. She finally chose the French horn. She would always arrange herclass schedule to make time for both band and vocal music classes. Nicolette received many honors for her vocal and band talent and went on to play and sing all four years at Bethany. She loved singing in the The Messiah at Lindsborg. The Bethany Vocal group traveled to Sweden, Norway and Germany to share their beautiful voices.Last but certainly not least, Nicolette loved to share her talents in the theatre. When she tried out for “Godspell” as a freshman she called home and told us she probably would not get a part but at least she tried. But she did get one of the main parts and honestly felt guilty that she took it away from another junior or senior student. But she loved her time with Bethany theatre and it lead her to work with Broadway RFD in Lindsborg, KS. “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown” was one of her favorite productions.A production dearest to her heart was the Pawnee Rock Easter Pageant, “The Way of the Cross.” It is held every other year on Easter morning. She would drive back for practices and was willing to work on every detail to make it a beautiful, meaningful production. Nicolette played the part of Mary Magdalene. Nicolette Unruh-Uhl, age 36

Marion Kenneth Bahr, 94, passed away November 5, 2023, at Catholic Care Center, Bel Aire, Kan. He was born September 4, 1929, in Olmitz, to William F. and Anna M. (Hickey) Bahr. He married Marian Helen “Ann” Hipp on May 18, 1953, in Odin. She died July 16, 2014.

A lifetime Claflin resident, Marion worked for the Claflin Mill and later Miller’s of Claflin in the appliance and flooring installation departments. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, Knights of Columbus Council 1500 and the V.F.W. Post 8668 in Claflin. Marion was a veteran of the United States Army having served during the Korean Conflict. He enjoyed fishing but especially loved spending time with his family.

Survivors include, four sons, Bill Bahr and wife Vicki of Rogers, Ark., Joe Bahr and wife Carolyn of Denver, Colo.; Tim Bahr and wife Tammi of Tallahassee, Fla., and Paul Bahr and wife Jeni of Ellsworth; two daughters, Rosemary Bachman and husband Tom of Lakin and Joan Klug and husband Bill of Odin; a brother, Robert Bahr of Houston, Texas; a sister, Rose Ann Wondra of Hoisington; 17 grandchildren, Heather Clark, Molly Shelden, Jenni Klienow, Amy Metro, Billy Klug, Jami Merlau, Kim Fisher, Kayla Johnson, Kevin Klug, Jeremy Bahr, Kenny Bahr, Ali Darhumb, Brit Harris, Michael Bahr, Mickey Bahr, Josh Bahr and Whitney Lee; 49 great grandchildren; and one great great granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Bahr; five brothers, Cecil Bahr, Donald L. Bahr, Charles Bahr, Frederick Bahr and Francis Bahr; and a sister, Catherine Oborny.

Marion Bahr, age 94

Arlene Rae Keener, 84, died November 3, 2023, at Leisure Homestead Association in Stafford, Kansas. She was born April 3, 1939, in Butte, Montana, the daughter of Thomas Ray and Rhea (Vance) Lewis. Arlene graduated in 1959 from Stanfield High School, Stanfield, Oregon. She then went on to graduate from Capital Business College in Salem, Oregon. After college she worked for Farm Bureau in Pendleton, Oregon for two years, before meeting Darrell Edward Keener. They were married on May 21, 1960, in Stanfield, Oregon and then moved to Kansas.

In Hoisington she worked at a bank for ten years but soon found her true calling was horses. Over the years she put on many horse clinics for all levels of riders. Many of those riders she coached have brought home national and world titles. Arlene and Darrell developed an extensive breeding program which encompassed the training and showing of multiple national and world champion horses and their bloodlines. She was there every step of the way from hauling her athletes across the country to sewing their outfits to compete in. Her leadership earned her multiple horse association judge cards, seats on various boards of directors, and eventually earning her Farm Bureau Woman Leader of the Year in 1973. She was able to achieve all of this while being a farm wife and raising four daughters that shared a love and compassion to compete and excel in equestrian competitions. Arlene and Darrell were lifetime members of the American Quarter horse Association, National Reining Horse Association, and Palomino Horse breeders of America. In 1990 Darrell and Arlene bought the bar in Olmitz and ran the Wagon Wheel from 1990-1996. She later worked as a cashier at Walmart.

She is survived by her four daughters; DaLena Keener of Hoisington, Dana Stoss (Jerry) of Hoisington, Deana Trail of Lawrence, and Dawn Richardson (Terry) of Lawrence; brothers, Ted Lewis of Woodland, Washington and Daryl Smith of Vancouver, Washington; six grandchildren, Rantz Rowland (Katie) of Hoisington, Luke Keener (Joslyn) of Olmitz, Nakota Rae Allen of Russell, and Ashton and Hayden Ensley of Lawrence, and Eden Ensley of Great Bend; and 3 great grandsons. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Darrell.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday, with family to greet friends from 6-8 p.m., Wednesday at the funeral home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m., Thursday, November 9, 2023, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home with Pastor Don Fisher presiding. Burial will follow in Walnut Valley Cemetery, rural Barton County, Kansas.

Arlene Rae Keener, age 84

Timothy Mark Parret, 63, passed away Nov. 4, 2023, at his home, Pawnee Rock.

He was born June 3, 1960, the son of Jack and Betty Schell Parret. A lifetime area resident; he was owner and operator of Tim Parret Pipe Company, where he was a truck driver hauling used oilfield structural pipe.

He was a member of the Pawnee Rock Christian Church and a past Mayor for the city of Pawnee Rock. He lived in Sedan, Kansas for 13 years where he owned Parret Pipe Company, until moving back to Pawnee Rock in 1999 to continue operating the family business. One of Tim’s favorite things to do was to go 4-Wheeling with his family and his “Pup” dog. He enjoyed going camping and was always known for telling a great story.

On May 11, 1983 he married Rebecca Sue Smith in Louisiana; she survives.

Other survivors include; two sons, Travis (Erin) Parret, Kansas City and Nicholas Parret, Pawnee Rock; two daughters, Chasity Parret, Salina and Georgia Parret, Pawnee Rock; two sisters, Marie Johns, Okla., and Judy Wheeler, Texas; a sister-in-law, Sandy Parret, Larned; eight grandchildren, Drew Southern, Tanner Parret, Makenzie Frisbie, Hallee Tower, Alexander Parret, Elizabeth Parret, Matthew Parret and Christian Parret; two great-grandchildren; two uncles, David Schell and Curt Schell, one aunt, Debbie Bowman, and nine first cousins and numerous extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by; his parents, Jack and Betty Parret; his step-dad Joseph Billus, two brothers, Robert Parret and Jack Parret Jr, a granddaughter, Kayla Parret; and two aunts, Sara Mostrom and Kathy Hinkel.

Timothy Parret, age 63

Lawrence Jerome “Larry” “L.J.” Krestine, 80, passed away October 31, 2023, at Wheatland Nursing Center of Russell. He was born August 8, 1943, at Great Bend, the son of William J. Krestine, Sr. and Clara M. (Zirnich) Krestine. He had been married to Anita (Gibson) and Ann (Hetzel), and later married LaWanna (Slocum) Clark on June 12, 1999, at Holton.

A current Otis resident, Larry was a graduate of Otis High School and Emporia State University, with degrees in mathematics education and business. Larry served the community of Holton and the surrounding area as an insurance agent for many years, as well as operating an antique mall. Previous to his move to Holton, he managed the Grand Hotel in Horton, worked as an upper level math teacher, and raised chickens and hogs in rural Huron. Never having idle hands, he always managed to find time to help with wheat harvest on the family farm. He was a member of the Horton Jaycees, Holton/Jackson County Chamber of Commerce and the Otis Happy Age Senior Group and served as various officer positions, including president of the Jaycees and Happy Age Group. Larry enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling, refinishing antique furniture, playing cards and games, telling jokes and stories, KU basketball and Kansas City Chiefs football.

Survivors include, his wife, LaWanna of the home; three daughters, Marsha Krestine of Kansas City, Mo., Michelle “Shelly” May of Bonner Springs and Marie Gardner of Palmer, Alaska; four stepchildren, Kathy Groth (Les) of Cloquet, Minn., Julie Kincaid of Claremore, Okla., Lonnie Morris (Lynne) of Topeka and Ryan Clark of Easton; a sister, Evelyn “Sally” Medlock of Great Bend; four grandchildren, Trey May, Olivia May, Coyd Gardner and Cyla Gardner; 11 step grandchildren; and 27 step great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Anita; a step daughter, Sheila Carpenter; a brother, William “Bill” Krestine; two sisters, Ramona Torrez and Evangeline “Sherry” Jobes; three step grandchildren, David Groth, Christopher Clark and Brianna M. Clark.

He had been married to Anita (Gibson) and Ann (Hetzel), and later married LaWanna (Slocum) Clark on June 12, 1999, at Holton.A current Otis resident, Larry was a graduate of Otis High School and Emporia State University, with degrees in mathematics education and business. Larry served the community of Holton and the surrounding area as an insurance agent for many years, as well as operating an antique mall. Previous to his move to Holton, he managed the Grand Hotel in Horton, worked as an upper level math teacher, and raised chickens and hogs in rural Huron. Never having idle hands, he always managed to find time to help with wheat harvest on the family farm. He was a member of the Horton Jaycees, Holton/Jackson County Chamber of Commerce and the Otis Happy Age Senior Group and served as various officer positions, including president of the Jaycees and Happy Age Group. Lawrence 'Larry' 'L.J.' Krestine, age 80

Joseph “Joe” Allen Murphy, 85, passed away October 31, 2023, at Via Christi Village-Ridge, Wichita, Kansas after battling prostate cancer for a year and a half. He was born on September 20, 1938, in Great Bend, Kansas, to James and Alma (Riney) Murphy. On September 11, 1965, he married Roma Lee Riner in Great Bend, Kansas.

Joe was a hard worker who led by example. After his father passed away from a tragic accident when he was 12 years old, Joe assumed many responsibilities not normally required of a boy of such a young age. He worked on the family farm, went to school, played sports, and helped support his large family, including his invalid older brother and his two baby sisters. A lifetime resident of Great Bend prior to moving to Goddard in 2022, Joe served the country overseas in the United States Air Force from 1958-1962. After his Honorable Discharge, he obtained his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Fort Hays State University, where he met his future wife of 58 years, Roma. For 30 years, he worked as a technical systems coordinator for Midwest Energy, before “retiring”, only to spend the next 20 years as a custodian at Eisenhower Elementary School doing two of his favorite things: encouraging and building up kids and working hard. When asked by his children when he was going to finally retire, his response was always “in another two years.” He kept “two-yearing it” until he turned 77.

Joe was always a champion for the little guy and had a huge and generous heart. He was a devoted husband to Roma as they constantly spent time with their kids and grandkids. He was a lifetime blood donor, contributing well over 8 gallons of blood to help others. He was a member of the Prince of Peace Parish and the American Legion. He never took himself too seriously, and liked to spread his hard-earned knowledge through multiple “Joe Murphyisms”: “Just hold your head high and walk fast.” “Keep your ears open and your mouth shut.” “Doing that can cause your kids to be born naked.” “It’ll put hair on your chest.” “It’s good to have some sweat run down the crack of your hind end.” “Now stay out of jail…” Those are but a sample of the wisdom he liked to share and smiles he liked to create. If you ever had the opportunity to take his order at a restaurant, you probably had the chance to tease him back when he said his favorite one, “I’d like an iced-tea, in a clean glass.” He loved his dogs, but above all, he loved his wife and kids, helping his kids with their lawn mowing business, watching their sports competitions and debate tournaments, and spending time with them and the grandkids.

Survivors include his wife, of the home. His children are a daughter, Kelly Sue (Mark) Disque of Wylie, Texas; son Patrick (Theresa) Murphy of Wichita, Kansas; son Sean (Alicia) Murphy of Papillion, Nebraska; and son Mark (Kimberly) of Olathe, Kansas. His thirteen grandchildren are Adam (Bethany), Brendan, and Kaitlyn Disque; Chelsea (Jordan) Mellinger, Conor, Ryan, and Shauna Murphy; Benjamin and Zane Murphy; and McKay, Gunner, Josie, and Taggart Murphy. His two step grandchildren are Cooper and Carli Dunham. He has six great-grandchildren. His sisters are Janice Sis of Bryan, Texas, and Rita (Joe) Buchanan of Council Grove, Kansas. His brothers-in-law are George Tooley of Greeley, Colorado, and Dan Bernard of

Omaha, Nebraska. His sister-in-law is Rose Murphy of Great Bend, Kansas. He has numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Richard “Dick” Murphy and Michael Murphy; two sisters, Joyce Tooley and Barbara Bernard; a brother-in-law, Ray Sis; a niece, Katie Gant; and a nephew, Chris Tooley.

Christine Bailey, 96, passed away November 2, 2023, at Diversicare of Larned, Kansas. She was born January 9, 1927, at Pryor, Colo., to Michael &amp; Anna (Soltis) Hudran. She married Floyd “Jim” Bailey October 23, 1945, at Pueblo, Colo. He died April 22, 2000.

A longtime resident of Great Bend, Christine was a homemaker. She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and the Altar Society. Her hobbies included crocheting afghans, sewing, walking, and gardening, especially growing tomatoes.

Survivors include numerous nieces and nephews, including Larry (Toni) Bailey of Fisher, Tex., Rod (Martha) Bailey of Simsonville, S.C., Donald (Jackie) Bailey of Giddino, Tex., Kevin (Aileen) Bailey of Leavenworth, Kan., Marilyn (Steve) Petty of Great Bend, Kan., Alice (Paul) Neidhart of Naperville, Ill., and Dianna (Greg) Allison of Great Bend, Kan.; and a sister-in-law, Carol Bailey of Sierra Vista, Ariz.

Jermy Lynn Jimison, 45, died Oct. 31, 2023, at Sandstone Heights Nursing Home, Little River. He was born Feb. 19, 1978, in Great Bend, the son of Kyle M. and Deborah Ann (Mooney) Jimison. Jermy graduated from Quivira Heights High School in 1996.

On June 6, 1998, he married Heather Dunlap in Great Bend, and they were blessed with a daughter, Taylor in 2000. They then later divorced.

A former resident of Bushton and Claflin areas, Jermy worked various jobs, he had been a farm hand for many farmers, and had worked for Wal-Mart and Wells Furniture. Jermy’s favorite thing to do was spend time behind the wheel of his beloved 1985 Chevy Truck. Whether it was mudding with his brother or just country cruising with his daughter. Jermy was always available to help fix anything or share a pizza even if it was around the midnight hour.

He is survived by his daughter, Taylor Jimison and companion Austin Pruitt of Ellsworth; father, Kyle M. Jimison of Bushton; twin brother, Chad Jimison and wife Misty of Clearwater; nephew, Daxton Jimison of Clearwater; and niece, Tymberlin Jimison, of Great Bend; and his many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Deborah Ann “Debbie” Jimison.

Friends may sign the book today and until service at the funeral home. There will be no viewing as cremation has taken place.

Jermy Jimison, age 45

Laura Ann (Steinbacher) Schenkel, 83, passed away October 31, 2023, at Bridge Haven Memory Care, Lawrence, Kansas. She was born August 2, 1940, at Great Bend, to Charles and Eulalia (Brehm) Steinbacher. She married Ray S. Schenkel August 12, 1959, at Great Bend. He died December 15, 2012.

A lifetime Great Bend resident, Ann started her long time career in banking shortly after graduating from Great Bend High School. Her commitment to the community began at First National Bank, spanning over 30 years, then finally retiring as the Senior Vice President of Community Bank of the Midwest. She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish, Altar Society, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and served on the Cedar Park Place board of directors. She was an avid reader, enjoyed cooking and baking, drawing and painting with water colors and Hallmark Christmas movies. Ann especially loved spending time with her family.

Survivors include two sons, Scott Schenkel and wife Leilani of Great Bend and Todd Schenkel and wife Michelle of Topeka; two brothers, Jerry “Pete” Steinbacher of Great Bend, and Jim Steinbacher (Debra) of New Braunfels, Texas; three sisters, Jolene Romme of Lawrence, Jeanne Hollembeak (Bruce) of Lee’s Summit, Mo. and Mary Lou Steinbacher of Denver, Colo.; one sister-in-law, Anne Steinbacher of Kansas City, Mo.; four grandchildren, Evan Schenkel, Cory Schenkel (Jessica), Taylor Christopher (Andy), and Tate Schenkel; five great grandchildren with one expected in May, 2024; and 13 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ray S. Schenkel; two brothers, Charlie F. Steinbacher and Larry “Bones” Steinbacher; and brother-in-law, Leon Romme.

 </figure>Laura Ann (Steinbacher) Schenkel, 83, passed away October 31, 2023, at Bridge Haven Memory Care, Lawrence, Kansas. She was born August 2, 1940, at Great Bend, to Charles and Eulalia (Brehm) Steinbacher. She married Ray S. Schenkel August 12, 1959, at Great Bend. He died December 15, 2012.A lifetime Great Bend resident, Ann started her long time career in banking shortly after graduating from Great Bend High School. Her commitment to the community began at First National Bank, spanning over 30 years, then finally retiring as the Senior Vice President of Community Bank of the Midwest. She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish, Altar Society, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and served on the Cedar Park Place board of directors. She was an avid reader, enjoyed cooking and baking, drawing and painting with water colors and Hallmark Christmas movies. Ann especially loved spending time with her family.Survivors include two sons, Scott Schenkel and wife Leilani of Great Bend and Todd Schenkel and wife Michelle of Topeka; two brothers, Jerry “Pete” Steinbacher of Great Bend, and Jim Steinbacher (Debra) of New Braunfels, Texas; three sisters, Jolene Romme of Lawrence, Jeanne Hollembeak (Bruce) of Lee’s Summit, Mo. and Mary Lou Steinbacher of Denver, Colo.; one sister-in-law, Anne Steinbacher of Kansas City, Mo.; four grandchildren, Evan Schenkel, Cory Schenkel (Jessica), Taylor Christopher (Andy), and Tate Schenkel; five great grandchildren with one expected in May, 2024; and 13 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ray S. Schenkel; two brothers, Charlie F. Steinbacher and Larry “Bones” Steinbacher; and brother-in-law, Leon Romme.

Carol Ann Garcia, 76, passed away Oct. 27, 2023, at Azria Health Woodhaven, Great Bend. She was born March 8, 1947, in Kinsley to Jose Contrerez, Sr. &amp; Janice (Almanza) Contreras.

Survivors include, two sons, Richard Garcia and Alex Contrerez; a daughter, Hannah Contrerez; a son in law, Jeremy Robinson; a daughter in law, Lindsay Hames; four brothers, Fred Contrerez, Steve Contrerez, David Contrerez and Joe Contrerez, Jr.; two sisters, Delores Munoz and Anita Cleveland; four grandchildren, Braelynn Contrerez, Haven Hames, Rylan Robinson and Trevor Cline; five nieces and nephews, April Zendejas, Candy Contrerez, Steven Contrerez, Shawna Contrerez and Dalton Contrerez; three great nieces and nephews, Reina Zendejas, Alexandria Zendejas and Vicente Zendejas; and a great great nephew, Horacio Zendejas. She was preceded in death by her parents.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Nov. 3, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Father Prakash Kola. Inurnment will be in the Kinsley Cemetery. Memorials have been designated to the Carol Garcia Expense Fund, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Carol Garcia, age 76

Richard Lee Ahlvers, 90, passed away Oct. 27, 2023, at Hays Medical Center, Hays. He was born at home on the family farm on May 19, 1933, in Mitchell County to Leo and Eunice (Smith) Ahlvers. He married Kathryn Deines Nov. 19, 1961, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Otis.

Richard was a United States Army Veteran, serving from 1955 to 1957 as a Signal Officer, earning the rank of First Lieutenant. “Mr. Ahlvers” was a long-time educator and administrator in Kansas. His dedication to his career began as a science and math teacher at Stafford High School. He then transitioned to a principal and athletic director at St. Francis for 12 years. He served as principal at Mankato Elementary, and then superintendent at Pike Valley, retiring in 1996. Failing at retirement, he served as interim superintendent at North Central School District, before finally officially re-retiring in 1998. A resident of Great Bend since 1998, Richard served as a volunteer for the AARP Tax-Aide Program until 2019. He was an active member of the Great Bend Trinity Lutheran Church, Great Bend Noon Lions Club, the County Planning Committee and served as a board member of the Boys Home. Richard was an avid Kansas City Chiefs and Royals fan and, as a Fort Hays State and Kansas State alumnus, enjoyed all Kansas college athletics, particularly after his daughters attended KU and Emporia. Never having an idle mind, he was a lifelong learner and enjoyed extensive conversation spanning everything from history to politics to agriculture.

While Richard was the ultimate professional at work, his passion was for his family, of whom he was immensely proud (especially his beloved grandson). Having children gave him both the perfect opportunity to indulge in his love of horses, and to spend time with his family.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years Kathy; two daughters, Alicia Ahlvers of Henrico, Va. and Richelle Ahlvers-Dolphin and husband Wade Dolphin of Monument, Colo.; a brother, Rodney Ahlvers and wife Norma of Glen Elder; a sister, Pat Boyd and husband Jim of Beloit; a sister-in-law, Carol Ahlvers; a brother-in-law, James Deines and wife Marsha; a sister-in-law Vickie Riedl and husband Martin; a sister-in-law Marcia Brewer and husband Lee; and a grandson, Jonathon Ahlvers and wife Dale Northrup of Colorado Springs, Colo., as well as a large extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Bob Ahlvers and David Ahlvers, two brothers-in-law Robert Deines and Frank Deines, and one sister-in-law Elizabeth Deines.
