Great Bend USD 428 is proud to announce Mandy Stansfield, 5th-grade teacher at Riley Elementary, and Lori McLeland, 7th-grade English teacher at Great Bend Middle School, as the district’s 2026 Teachers of the Year.

Each year, Great Bend USD 428 recognizes one elementary and one secondary educator who exemplify excellence in teaching and a deep commitment to their students, school, and community. Both honorees will represent USD 428 in the 2027 Kansas Teacher of the Year program, sponsored by the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE).

“Recognizing our Teachers of the Year is one of the highlights of the school year,” said Superintendent Khris Thexton. “Ms. Stansfield and Ms. McLeland represent the very best of our profession. Their enthusiasm, leadership, and compassion have a profound impact on the lives of their students and colleagues. We are proud to have them represent USD 428 at the state level.”

About the Honorees Mandy Stansfield is a 5th-grade teacher at Riley Elementary School, where she has taught for 12 years. Known for her energetic and engaging classroom presence, Mandy brings subjects to life through enthusiastic instruction that keeps students captivated and excited about learning. Whether teaching math, social studies, or science, her lively approach inspires students to find joy and confidence in their education.

Beyond the classroom, Stansfield has made significant contributions to her school and district through leadership and mentorship. She has served as a mentor teacher for new staff, a member of the Curriculum Steering Committee, and a Process Champion for Capturing Kids’ Hearts.

Her commitment to fostering positive school culture extends to organizing Student Council, supporting family engagement events, and building community partnerships with local organizations and businesses. She also volunteers for causes such as The Ronald McDonald House and the Great Bend Fire Department’s Spaghetti Feed Fundraiser.

At the heart of Stansfield’s teaching philosophy is the belief that strong relationships form the foundation of effective teaching. “Education is at its best when teachers truly connect with their students,” Stansfield said. “That relationship — built on trust, care, and respect — is what makes learning meaningful.”

Lori McLeland is a 7th-grade English teacher at Great Bend Middle School, where she has dedicated 12 years to inspiring students through creativity, compassion, and a love of learning. Her engaging classroom activities—like exploring figurative language through idioms and art—blend imagination with literacy skills, helping students connect meaning and expression.

Beyond the classroom, McLeland has been deeply involved in professional development and mentorship across USD 428. She has served as a Building Leadership Team (BLT) member for nine years, mentored new teachers, and presented literacy protocols and English Language endorsement materials at district events. Her professional growth includes attending the Capturing Kids’ Hearts Conference and MTSS Symposium, and she contributed to teacher education as a long-time member of the Sterling College Teacher Education Advisory Committee (2010–2022).

Active in her community, McLeland serves as a worship leader and Vacation Bible School coordinator at Ellinwood Community Church, where she also supports outreach efforts to seniors and those in need.

When asked about her teaching philosophy, McLeland shared, “I believe that effective teaching involves a love for children, a desire to learn throughout your life, a compassionate heart, and the confidence to inspire students to always strive for success.”

All those costumes and all that Halloween candy went on clearance Saturday. Hoisington fifth grader Izaac Dutton now has plenty of funds to satisfy that sweet tooth or buy next year's costume - or do whatever he wants with the $100 he won last week as the latest Eagle Media Make a Difference Contest winner, presented by OPI and Golden Belt Printing.

"I make a difference by pushing in chairs when leaving each classroom, and helping others grade their papers in math class," Izaac said. 

Will from OPI and Golden Belt Printing presented Izaac with a giant $100 check for being selected as a weekly winner. All four October weekly winners are now finalists in the monthly drawing, where the winner will receive another $100 and a bookbag filled with goodies from other Make a Difference Contest sponsors. The monthly winner's teacher will also receive $100.  That means Lincoln Elementary fifth-grade teacher Stephanie Lomas is now eligible for a prize.

"Izaac is a great kid in the classroom," she said. "He's always super helpful, and his personality is just fun. He always knows when to slide in a funny comment, and he just keeps the mood light and fun."

of Tuesday, October 28th, the drought monitor report indicates some overall
improvement for Eastern Kansas from last week for us. The rest of the state is
still totally out of dry conditions.&nbsp; The
six-to ten-day outlook (November 4 to 8) indicates a 60 to 80% chance of above normal
temperatures and a 40 to 50% chance of leaning below normal precipitation.&nbsp; The eight to fourteen-day outlook (November 6
to 12) indicates a 60 to 80% chance of leaning above normal for temperatures
and 33 to 40% chance of leaning below normal for precipitation.&nbsp; Not terrible but we could always use
precipitation.

Last
week we briefly discussed Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and weed
control.&nbsp; Practices to employ short of
herbicides but realizing judicious use of herbicides is often necessary.&nbsp; This week, a brief discussion of insect
control with IPM.&nbsp; There are more options
short of insecticides.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Cultural
practices – Interrupting insect life cycles and disrupting habitat can play a
major role in control.&nbsp; Crop rotations
with dissimilar crops help a great deal.&nbsp;
The rotations available varying across the state dramatically.&nbsp; Something as simple as a corn-soybean
rotation is still effective in minimizing corn rootworm problems. &nbsp;Rotations are especially important when trying
to leave surface residue.&nbsp; For a
monoculture, eliminating surface residue is important, ranging from tillage to
bury the residue, baling, or burning.&nbsp;
However, there are downsides to this.&nbsp;
Good weed control, not just in the field but waterways and roadways help
eliminate alternate hosts.&nbsp; Depending on
the pest, appropriate row spacing and plant density.&nbsp; Timing of operations from planting to
harvesting helps.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Sanitation
– Cleaning up spills from grain storage areas in a timely fashion helps.&nbsp; Keeping road and water ways mowed or baled
helps eliminate habitat.&nbsp; Eliminating
standing water after rains helps with mosquitoes. 

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Cultivar
selection – Selecting varieties or hybrids bred for tolerance or hopefully
resistance. Hessian fly tolerant wheat for example.&nbsp; Also, GMO crops such as Bt corn and
cotton.&nbsp; Bt corn controls corn borer
species effectively and is overall effective against corn rootworm.&nbsp; It’s extremely effective against cotton
bollworm.&nbsp; More GMO control is likely
coming.&nbsp; 

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Beneficials
– these are disease, vertebrates, invertebrates, and other insects the prey on,
cause diseases, or parasitize insects.&nbsp;
Many occur naturally and producers can work to protect them and increase
numbers.&nbsp; Examples: ladybugs, amphibians,
opossums, bats birds, etc. 

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; For,
for endemic problems such as wire worm and others, where permitted, an
insecticidal seed treatment which is absorbed by the plant and provides
systemic pest control for certain insects for a fair amount of time.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Finally,
new generations of insecticides targeted specifically to a particular group of
insects and having no nontarget effects and slowly coming.

Only one team in the state of Kansas remained unbeaten
heading into state volleyball weekend. Ellinwood’s 42-0 record heading to the
Class 2A State Championships in Dodge City was the culmination of years of
program-building by Eagle coach Greg Maxwell. Saturday afternoon, his team
reached the pinnacle, taking down Valley Heights 25-16, 25-21 to secure the
school’s first state volleyball championship and a perfect 47-0 record.

"This is a milestone these kids have been dreaming of
their entire careers," Maxwell said. "I remember them sitting in our
gym when they were tiny. We talked about you're here to start your quest for a
state championship. To see them accomplish it is what this is all about. I've
wanted this so bad for them. This was our year, there's no doubt about it, but
for them to be perfect is phenomenal."

Ellinwood broke a 21-year state drought under Maxwell in
2019. The next year, his team finished at 31-5 but was unable to compete in the
sub-state finals due to COVID quarantine. The next season, and last fall, Maxwell
led the Eagles to fourth-place finishes. This year’s squad pulled off the
unthinkable with just two seniors in Kyndal Moore and Regan Widener.

"It's unreal," Moore said. "It's kind of hard
to think about it right now. It just feels unreal and it's amazing."

Not that the road was easy. Throughout the season, Ellinwood
handed Little River its only two losses of the season as the Redskins went on
to claim a fourth-straight 1A, Div. I title in Saturday’s morning session in
Dodge City. The Eagles also beat the likes of Hoisington, Ellsworth, and
Hillsboro – all teams that played at state.

"We didn't really focus on the undefeated part," Maxwell said. "Obviously, there's a point in the season where we knew we had to be undefeated if we wanted to accomplish our goals. We didn't want to take any chances in pool play, drop one and not get to day two. At one point it became a reality but it was never the goal. The goal was a championship."

The Lady Eagles skated through Friday’s pool matches,
winning three matches in six sets. Jefferson County North fared little better
in Saturday’s semifinal as Ellinwood jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead with the
help of a strong service from sophomore Mette Maxwell. The Lady Eagles advanced
to the finals with a 25-10, 25-14 win against the Chargers.

Things continued to go well in set one against Valley
Heights. Ellinwood built a 16-9 lead with four of those points against coming
on mistakes. Junior Alyvia Batchman had a big block that led to a Widener kill,
then Moore put down a block for a 19-10 lead. Ellinwood went on to take the set
25-16.

The Lady Eagles had to battle some adversity in the second
set. With Mustang senior Ava Smith hitting from the left side, including three
straight points, Valley Heights built a 9-3 lead. Coach Maxwell broke up the
action with a timeout and reminded his team it only need to score a point to
get Smith off the front line.

"That was the whole strategy was we had to get her into
the back row," he said. "Nothing against the rest of their team -
they're a very solid team - but she's elite. If you give a girl like that
swings and we're not swinging it, you're going to be in trouble."

Batchman put down a block for the next point, then took over
on serve. Widener returned up front to deliver a trio of kills to level the
score at nine, then a big Batchman serve gave Ellinwood the lead at 10-9.

"We just have to focus and stay relaxed, don't be afraid and keep playing hard," Widener said. "That's how we worked our way back into it."

The teams battled from there. Valley Heights pulled ahead
15-14 with an ace, but the Eagles battled back with a kill by Batchman. They
never trailed again. Batchman put down another block, and kills from Widener
and sophomore Ayla Ritchie kept the gap at 21-19. Widener, still in the back
row, came up with a pair of huge digs that led to a point and a 22-19 lead.

The Mustangs got as close as 22-21 on another ace but
Maxwell staved off the comeback with a kill, then Moore poked over a soft hit
to set up championship-point at 24-21.

Maxwell’s team did what few teams have ever done with a
perfect season, but he knows the road does not have to end with success in
2025. 

"The seniors were phenomenal this year from
start to finish," he said. "They have been the reason we're standing
where we are right now. We're not done. We have goals for multiple years of
being in this situation and giving ourselves an opportunity."

UNBEATEN: Lady Eagles win Class 2A volleyball title with perfect 47-0 record

The City of Great Bend Public Works Department will be conducting an open burn of trees at the compost site located at 97 Southwest 5th Ave., beginning Monday, Nov. 3.

According to weather reports, wind gusts in Kansas tend to peak from November to January. Due to the volume of trees that need burned, the city cannot delay the process until the new year, prompting the urgency to conduct the open burn in the coming week.

Favorable conditions for the burn would include sustained north winds. However, forecasts predict a mix of north and south winds. In this case, strong gusts from the south would be optimal to carry smoke out of the city and prevent it lingering and becoming a nuisance to the community.

Public Works will not feed the fire overnight and there will be continuous 24/7 in-person surveillance throughout the burn.

Great Bend Public Works Department to conduct open burn week of Nov. 3

The Barton County Commission approved the purchase of new computers from a local vendor on Tuesday morning, aiming to upgrade the county's technological capabilities. The commission voted to accept the low bid submitted by Bauer Computers&nbsp;of Great Bend&nbsp;for a total cost of $25,225.

The decision followed a presentation by County Administrator Matt Patzner, who detailed the Information Technology Department’s&nbsp;annual replacement plan. The plan is designed to replace a certain number of computers and related equipment each year, a practice that ensures consistent budgeting and improves the county's overall technological capabilities.

Patzner told the commissioners that the IT Department solicited bids for the equipment through the Vendor Registry.

“I’m proud of the county’s effort to shop local,” said Commissioner Shawn Hutchinson, District 3. “This is not always an option, but it is important to do so if possible.”

Commissioners continue Travel 389 Barton County commissioners and other county officials continued Travel 389 Tuesday afternoon, making stops at MPIRE Improvements and Overhead Door, the Central Care Cancer Center, and Nobody Else’s Auto.

The program allows the commission to meet with residents and businesses along the county's 389 miles&nbsp;of blacktop roads.

work with families.

“In Great Bend public schools, our priority is making sure students
have a hot and nutritious meal,” she said. “You can’t learn if you’re not fueled
up and ready to go. So, for our families, if things have changed within their
household – a job has changed or income has changed – the free/reduced meal
application can be completed at any time online.”

With some government jobs furloughed or pay reduced since
the Oct. 1 shutdown, financial situations may be rapidly changing for
families. Anyone needing to update their financial status can fill out an
application for free or reduced school lunches by visiting

Red Cross asks you to test your smoke alarms as you turn back clocks this weekend

The white cane&nbsp;is a symbol of freedom for the visually impaired, Sharna Doll told the Barton County Commission on Tuesday morning as the commissioners adopted a proclamation recognizing Tuesday as White Cane Awareness Day.

The action followed a request from Doll, who spoke on behalf of the Central Kansas Association for the Visually Impaired. Doll addressed the commissioners, explaining the significance of the white cane and the history of the annual observance promoted by the National Federation of the Blind, and noted the observance is not as well known as it should be.

While the cane's initial purpose was safety and improved navigation, Doll noted that the emphasis of White Cane Day, established by President Lyndon B. Johnson&nbsp;in 1964, has evolved.

"We recognize that the emphasis of White Cane Day has shifted over time away from safety and toward independence and equality," Doll said.

The group previously marked the day by walking around the courthouse with their canes, but "we can’t really do that anymore because a lot of our members are too old," she said. Doll, who is 63, noted the age range in the group is wide, with members as old as 92.

In an effort to increase awareness, she is actively trying to get more younger people involved.

The group, which meets on the fourth Monday&nbsp;of every month except November and December, also serves as a support network and regularly hosts speakers. They also advocate for safe sidewalks and other improvements, and mental health care to help those with a vision impairment.

The proclamation calls on citizens to acknowledge the independence of the blind and visually impaired and to understand the white cane's symbol. The proclamation also honored members of the Central Kansas Association for the Visually Impaired for its community efforts.

The white cane, introduced in the 1930s, is a vital tool that "expands [the visually impaired's] effort" to explore the world using hearing and touch, she said.

"It allows for a longer reach so that visually impaired people can more easily assess situations, and move quickly and confidently,” the proclamation reads.

At the urging of the National Federation of the Blind, the U.S. Congress&nbsp;adopted a joint resolution in 1964 designating Oct. 15&nbsp;of each year as White Cane Safety Day&nbsp;and recognizing that white canes enable blind people to travel safely and independently.

During Wednesday’s USD 428 Board of Education Luncheon Meeting hosted by Great Bend High School (GBHS), the board officially approved the addition of an E-Sports Team, marking an exciting new opportunity for students to participate in a growing and competitive activity.

The proposal was presented by Athletic &amp; Activities Director Matt Westerhaus, along with Coach Jake Hofflinger and Assistant Coach Kindric Castro. The program aligns with GBHS’s goals of student engagement, inclusion, and skill development, and will launch immediately under the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) framework.

“Statistics show that for 47% of E-Sports participants, this is their only club or activity in high school,” said Coach Jake Hofflinger, who will serve as the team’s sponsor. “It gives more students a place to belong, a community to engage with, and opportunities to develop valuable skills and positive peer interactions.”

Assistant Coach Kindric Castro, who also serves as the USD 428 District Google &amp; Chromebook Administrator, brings extensive experience to the program. A former member of the Barton Community College E-Sports Team and two-time National Champion, Castro shared with board members details about the types of games that will be played, the technical aspects of the tournament platform, and the opportunities available through E-Sports participation.

“Being part of the E-Sports team at Barton helped me build career-ready skills—communication, teamwork, and problem-solving—that I still use every day in my work,” said Castro. “It’s exciting to bring those same opportunities to students at GBHS.”

While GBHS has hosted a popular E-Sports Club for several years, the newly sanctioned team under KSHSAA will allow students to compete at higher levels, connecting with peers across Kansas and even nationally. Westerhaus noted that because this is a new activity for KSHSAA, schedules and logistics are still being finalized. Several Western Athletic Conference (WAC) schools are exploring participation, with Garden City currently the only other WAC school with a confirmed team.

Principal Brock Funke expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity, noting that the addition of E-Sports reflects the school’s ongoing mission to engage all students. “This is another way we can help every student find their place and pursue excellence in a positive, supportive environment,” said Funke.

Tavon Stroup is not a dual-sport athlete this fall. At least
not technically. The Great Bend High School senior recently qualified for this
Saturday’s Class 5A State Cross Country Championships, but his antics in the
stands at various Panther sporting events are often athletic feats in their own
right. Stroup is one of about a dozen students who make up the Striped Mafia
that helps fire up the student body and Panther crowd.

“It’s a blast,” he said. “We get chills from it, seriously.
Just showing up every game, being loud, getting the crowd involved, and having
high spirits. It’s getting everyone involved. We just want to be at the football
games for our friends.”

Stroup and about four friends started the group last year
with the goal of supporting classmates in their athletic endeavors. Just a year
later, the group has nearly tripled. The Striped Mafia is easy to see in its
red-and-white striped overalls during GBHS athletic events.

“I decided to amp it up this year just for the reason, it
means a lot to me to get everyone involved,” Stroup said. “It’s our last ride
as seniors, and we want to be the ‘12th man’ on the field, helping our boys win
and bringing energy to Great Bend.”

football team that has posted a 17-1 record over the past two seasons,
including another 8-0 start heading into tonight’s home playoff opener against
Newton. But the Mafia also takes its show on the road.“For the guys, game day is a lot of fun,” said Stroup. “For
home games, we wear our bibs to school, and for every game, we always get to
the field early, tailgate, throw the ball around, cook - just the full
experience that is nothing but fun for everyone.”<figure>

 </figure>During football games, the boys wave Panther flags, lead cheers, and
help bring the noise. Stroup takes it a step further, doing push-ups for every
Great Bend point scored. That has been a tall task this season with the
football team scoring early and often. Two weeks ago in Hays, Stroup did 36
push-ups to celebrate an offensive score. Just a few minutes later, he had to
do 43 more after senior Ian Premer returned an interception for a score. That’s
79 pushups in a matter of minutes.“Sometimes the push-ups can be a little rough, especially in
moments like that where it’ high-scoring and back-to-back. It can feel never-ending
at times, but there’s never been a time I didn’t make it. You just have to do
it for your boys on the field and the people in the stands. You don’t want to
disappoint anybody.”<figure>

 </figure>Saturday was another big day for Stroup and the Mafia.
Stroup ran ninth at the Class 5A regional cross country meet at Lake Barton,
helping the Panther boys’ team to its first state appearance in five years. A
couple hours later, he was leading chants as the Panther volleyball team
secured its second state berth in as many years.“I’m a guy who hates losing,” he said. “That’s all we do
right now is not lose, so I enjoy it quite a bit.”This year's Striped Mafia includes seven seniors and four juniors. Given the growth from a year ago, Stroup hopes the tradition will continue even after many of this year's members graduate."It feels amazing, and I hope it does," he said. "We already have people
wanting to do it next year."The Panther volleyball team opened play in the Class 5A
state tournament in Salina on Thursday. The Panther football team kicks off
against Newton at 7 p.m. tonight at Memorial Stadium. Both GBHS cross country
teams run in the Class 5A state championships at Rim Rock Farm on Saturday.
