Attendees should wear comfortable shoes and be able to navigate steps to enter the various buildings.

The Barton County Historical Society Museum and Village is located just south of the Arkansas River bridge at 85 South U.S. Hwy. 281, Great Bend. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 1-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Barton Community College will host a hands-on “Cyber Summer Camp” for incoming sixth through eighth grade students from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. June 17-18 on the Barton campus.

The two-day camp will introduce students to the exciting world of cybersecurity through interactive activities designed to spark curiosity and build digital problem-solving skills. Campers will decode messages with cipher disks, experiment with a “Pringles Enigma” inspired by World War II code machines, send Morse code using micro:bits, experience the Softwarfare Cyber Range, and compete in beginner-friendly Capture the Flag (CTF) challenges.

The camp is being offered as part of a grant, in partnership with Softwarfare and Enterprise KC.

&nbsp;The registration deadline is May 29. To register, call (620) 786-1108.

Eagle Media's News Week in Review

For the final time of the 2024-2025 school year, Eagle Media in Great
Bend recognized a Barton County grade school student in the Make a Difference
program. For the month of May, the winner was Ellie Schridde, a 4th-student
at Eisenhower Elementary School.


"I make a difference by helping other people with their school work," said Schridde.

Barton County grade school students were given a chance to fill out a form this
year stating how they make a difference in the world around them. New winners
were drawn each month throughout the school year. 

Angie Orth is Ellie’s teacher
at Eisenhower.


"Ellie is amazing," said Orth. "She is always willing to help anybody. She's doing a great job. Ellie reaches for the stars all of the time."

Schridde receives a $100 Great Bend Chamber of Commerce certificate and her
teacher, Orth, receives $100 as well. The winning student is also featured on a
radio news broadcast.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

USD 401 Chase Raymond Public Schools announced the appointment of&nbsp;Anna Jones&nbsp;as the new principal of&nbsp;Chase High School&nbsp;beginning with the&nbsp;2025-2026 school year.

A familiar face in the district, Jones brings commitment in the community, an understanding of curriculum and instruction, and a proven record of building meaningful relationships with staff, students, and families.&nbsp;

"Anna is deeply committed to the success of every student and educator," said Superintendent Dr. McDonald. "She leads with empathy, insight, and an unwavering belief in the power of teamwork. Her vision aligns perfectly with the district's goals for excellence and equity."

USD 401 also takes a moment to express deep appreciation for&nbsp;Mrs. Schepmann, who has served as a dedicated, knowledgeable, and supportive principal at Chase High School. Her leadership has left a lasting impact on the school, and while she will be greatly missed, we are excited for her next chapter as she joins&nbsp;Sterling College's Department of Education.&nbsp;

In 2019, the Great Bend Fire Department was placed on a list with the
U.S. Forest Service for a five-ton, 6x6 military vehicle to be converted into a
brush truck. Earlier this year, Great Bend took delivery of the truck to
enhance their ability to fight brush and grass fires, especially in the river
basin. 

Fire Chief Brent Smith said once the vehicle is painted, the Forest
Service signs the title over to Great Bend.


"This only has around 14,000 miles on it," said Smith. "It was through the Air Force. Everyone tells us the Air Force takes a little better care of their stuff than some of the other branches. We're fortunate with that. I would guess we can get 15 to 20 years, depending our use of it."

The Great Bend City Council approved the purchase of a 1,000-gallon skid unit
from Hays Fire Equipment for $37,154.70. The tank and pump will allow the truck
to be placed into service, eventually replacing the 250-gallon truck.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

The Larned American Legion Baseball Kickoff Dinner is Saturday, May 10 from 5-7 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Larned. The cost is $10 per adult and $5 per child with all of the proceeds going to the Legion baseball program.

The Great Bend City Council moved forward Monday with the process to
remove a pair of unsafe structures within city limits.


In June 2024, a structure fire occurred at a mobile home at 201 Walnut Street.
Half of the structure was missing due to the fire and the remaining interior of
the mobile home suffered severe smoke and fire damage.

Official Matt Schafer said a new owner bought the property after the fire. While
most of the mobile home has been removed, the frame still exists.


"We have been unable to make phone contact with these folks," said Schafer. "They received a letter. Based on the updated information on the Barton County website for property information, we're assuming it sold to a different person. They're clearly in the process of cleaning something up and just want the lot."

Closing the public hearing, City Administrator Logan Burns said the owner has
until June 7 to clean up the remaining structure. Property taxes have not been paid on the 201 Walnut property for 2023 or 2024.

"This resolution would give us the power to make sure they get the frame out and everything cleaned around the mobile home itself," said Burns. "If they don't, we have that power to dispose of it."

The City Council passed a similar resolution to remove the dangerous structure
at 218 Pine Street.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Great Bend High School will host the 138th Commencement Ceremony celebrating the Graduating Class of 2025 on Sunday, May 11, at 5 p.m.

The event will be held at Great Bend High School’s Memorial Stadium and live-streamed on the GBHS Media Channel (@gbhsmedia6763) on YouTube. In the case of inclement weather, the event will be moved indoors to the GBHS gymnasium, entrance at 2027 Morton Street.

The Commencement Ceremony is open to the public and will feature the GBHS Band and remarks from Clarise Snapp and Reese King, co-valedictorians. The Pledge of Allegiance will be led by Senior Class President Jillian Reimer. Gates at GBHS Memorial Stadium will open at 3 p.m.

Great Bend HS graduation Sunday scheduled outdoors

This Saturday will mark the seventh year of the Paws &amp; Claws Car
Show, a fundraiser for the Golden Belt Humane Society. The show will include
cars, trucks, motorcycles and other vehicles at Brit Spaugh Park in Great Bend.
Volunteer Cathy Von Feldt said the money goes toward the direct care of the
animals at the shelter.


"Usually once a month we sell food at Bomgaars," said Von Feldt. "Sometimes it's walking tacos or in the winter time we do soups. There are all kinds of fundraisers we try to do. It's so necessary. Without all of the fundraisers and donations, we would not have a humane society. I don't know how we would run that shelter without all the help."

The day will also include food trucks, music and raffles.


"We started this at the Walnut Bowl," said Von Feldt. "It grew and grew, and we decided to move the venue to the park. We moved it up to May and it has made a big difference. It has really improved over the years."

For a $10 suggested donation, walking tacos and hotdog meals will be available.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

RENO COUNTY —Authorities are investigating a small plane mishap that occurred just after 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Reno County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported an AT-301 Air-Tractor&nbsp;Fixed wing single-engine aircraft piloted by William E. Garrison, 62, Nickerson, was taking off from a private landing strip in the 7700 Block of North Herren Road, just east of Nickerson.

The aircraft clipped the top of a 2014 Chevy Impala driven by Jessica M. Williams, 38, Great Bend, who was northbound on Kansas 14.

There were no injuries. Williams was properly restrained, according to the KHP.&nbsp; The FAA and NTSB will be in charge of the investigation.

The Great Bend Optimist Club recognized 15 members of the Great Bend High School Class of 2025 at their annual Youth Appreciation Luncheon on May 5. The students were selected by the school’s counselors and staff for their involvement in school and community activities as well as for excellence in the classroom. 

Optimist Club Project Chairman Jim Mayberry said, “These are the qualities the leaders of tomorrow will need. These students have already demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities.” 

Each student enjoyed lunch and received a framed certificate, a gift card, and a copy of the Optimist Creed. Each student shared their plans for next school year as well as their favorite high school memory.

Graduating seniors who were recognized included: Thomas Armatys, Marisa Boone, Adalyn Erwin, Darcy Feist, Reese King, Josephine Mazouch, Cailyn Murphy, Diego Pasos, Jillian Reimer, Clarise Snapp, Eliana Teri, Emily Wedel, Kate Welcher, Ailey Williams and Carson Umphres.

A homeless woman and her child were finally able to find a home. The problem was they had virtually nothing to put in it.

This information was shared with local and area churches through CarePortal, a technology platform that connects communities to families in need.

“The request for this family included all types of furnishings, kitchen utensils and more,” said Karma Byers, CarePortal point person at St. Mark Lutheran Church, 2101 Jackson, Great Bend. “St. Mark was able to provide a queen-sized bed that was donated and delivered as a result of CarePortal.”

This is just one example of the 58 requests at St. Mark, which joined the CarePortal network just over a year ago. So far, 15 of these requests have been honored and 50 children have benefited.

Two other examples of local requests indicate the variety of issues facing families. The requests came from a mom with several children, who were deserted by the husband/father, and a woman who has been through rehab and stayed sober for about a year.

“It is important to know that those who make requests remain anonymous,” Byers said. “I don’t even know their names.”

She also emphasized that in many cases St. Mark collaborates with other churches and approaches local businesses for help.

“St. Mark doesn’t do this alone,” she commented. “Our congregation and others are sometimes overwhelmed by the number of needs; we encourage other churches and groups to become involved.”

The next training session is set for noon Thursday, May 22 at Immaculate Conception Church in Claflin. Churches, child-welfare agencies and community members are welcome. The session takes about an hour.

Agencies that join CarePortal are called “Posting Partners,” which can post needs by email.

These local partners are: St. Francis Ministries; Healthy Families/Kansas Children’s Service League; Department of Children and Families; USD 428 Great Bend; Juvenile Services; Kansas Kids Belong; The Center for Counseling &amp; Consultation; Family Crisis Center; USD 431 Hoisington; Barton Core Communities; The Family Initiative; USD 355 Ellinwood; and USD 112 Central Plains.

“Those who make requests are thoroughly vetted by professionals from these entities,” Byers emphasized. “The agency gets to know them and their circumstances. When they learn the request is legitimate, they pass it along.

“The priority is to keep families together in a safe place to live,” she continued. “We want to lift people up.”

Cable noted that Barton County has been involved in CarePortal for nine years, serving 2,433 children and families, and honoring 458 requests with an economic impact of $445,799.

“I am so grateful to all the Barton County churches and child-welfare agencies that have partnered with us to make a real difference in the lives of their neighbors in their community,” Cable commented. “We would love for others to join us.”

In early June last year, a 6,500-square-foot daycare opened in Great
Bend, a project facilitated by Great Bend Economic Development’s Advancing
Barton County Childcare. Economic Development Director Sara Arnberger said Bright
Beginnings Childcare Center will celebrate its one-year anniversary with an
event on June 20 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.


"We'll have some food and fun games for the kiddos," said Arnberger. "It's a good time, whether you have a child in childcare or not, to come out and see what we have been doing. You can see how the facility looks and what the kiddos have been up to."

Arnberger said prospective parents can take tours and receive information on
how to enroll their children.


Bright Beginnings is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at
