Quality testing results are in for this year’s U.S. hard red winter (HRW) crop. Global customers will once again be able to purchase good quality wheat that provides high value, according to a recently released report by U.S. Wheat Associates (USW).

Kansas delivered a strong hard red winter wheat crop in 2025, producing more than 340 million bushels as timely late-spring rains helped fields rebound from earlier drought stress. Harvest ran later than normal due to frequent storms, but test weight and falling number concerns proved minimal, and most disease pressures like stripe rust, leaf rust and wheat streak mosaic stayed localized. While protein levels came in slightly lower than recent drought years, overall yield and grain quality across Kansas reflected a resilient crop supported by improved moisture.

The 2025 report is supported by funding from the USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) export market development programs and USW’s state wheat commission members. The report includes class-specific information, starting with samples collected during harvest. Those samples are then sent to six partner laboratories across the United States, who conduct rigorous testing and analysis. This year’s report includes expanded extensograph testing and additional RVA (Rapid Visco Analyser) flour data for both soft and hard winter wheat.

The results are then compiled into the Crop Quality Report, which provides grade, non-grade, flour and specific end-product data. For example, this year’s report included additional data on sponge cake performance for soft red winter wheat. Overall, across all classes, global buyers will find U.S. wheat to be a consistent and reliable foundational ingredient for wheat-based food products.

USW also shares more detailed, regional reports for all six U.S. wheat classes and Desert Durum® on its website. There is also a new standalone document on collection and analysis methods. Wheat Scoop: 2025 U.S. Crop Quality Report

The students get the day off regardless. A good report from the teacher during parent-teacher conferences is just a bonus. But for those working and attending the conferences, scheduling matters. During Monday's USD 428 Board of Education meeting, Superintendent Khris Thexton explained why the PAT schedule shifted, and plans for upcoming conferences in February.

"We changed our conference schedule from previous years, and mainly on a fluke," he said. "Last year in February, we had that snowstorm that adjusted right over parent-teacher conferences."

Conferences had previously been held Monday and Tuesday evening, with a final session on Thursday afternoon. Students and teachers had the following Friday off. Last February and this year, conferences were moved to Tuesday evening, with a final session from 1-8 p.m. on Thursday. The teachers want the old schedule back.

"We meet monthly with GBNEA representatives," Thexton said. "I asked if they wanted to do a survey to see how that was liked. The previous year, it was done out of necessity due to weather. This year was an opportunity to try it. The survey came back, and the results show an overwhelming majority of 61.5 percent would like to return to the previous schedule."

Monday's conversation was merely informational, but Thexton said changes could be made since the next parent-teacher conferences are not scheduled until February. If changed, the conference schedule will return to 5-8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday evenings and 1-4 p.m. on Thursday.

Barton County Sheriff's Office Booking activity (11/13)

As the old adage goes, defense wins championships. The top-ranked Great Bend High School football team has relied a lot on its powerful offense this season as it chases history. But the Panther defense has been just as impressive. Through the first 10 weeks of the season, the Black Shirt defense has allowed just 21 points in the first half. Senior linebacker Trenton Kern also plays on the offensive line, but even if the offense comes up short, his defense still has a job to do.

"It's football," he said. "Offense isn't going to convert on the touchdown every time, but that's okay. We go out there, and we just want to get the ball back, get a stop, and go score a touchdown."

The Panthers are putting up historical numbers on the defensive side of the ball this season, with 39 tackles for loss, 17 interceptions, and seven fumble recoveries. The 110 points allowed this season are among the best in modern school history. The 24 takeaways this season are tied for sixth-most in GBHS history. Junior linebacker Kale Kern said it's all part of a plan.

"We try to create as many turnovers as possible," he said. "We know that if we get the ball back in our offense's hands, they're probably going to score most of the time. Not only are we creating turnovers, but we give our offense great field position. We know if we do that, it will make our jobs easier."

The Kern brothers have been at the heart of the Panther defense in 2025. Kale leads the team with 106 tackles, followed by Trenton with 93. No other player has more than 52 tackles. Kale's 13 tackles for loss represent one-third of the team total this fall, and he needs just one more to tie the school record set by Aidan Davidson last fall. Trenton's name is scattered throughout the GBHS history books for most tackles in a season and game. He will likely end his career as the No. 2 tackler in school history (since records were tracked in 2001).

"You'd be hard-pressed to find a better duo at linebacker in the state of Kansas than (the Kerns)," said Panther coach Erin Beck. "I know they're the best-ever in Great Bend High School history. For them to be brothers, it's pretty special to see them out there playing for each other. They're doing a great job for our defense. We're going to need them (tonight)."

Up front, senior Conner Holladay and Cole Fanshier have each recorded three sacks. Should the ball get beyond the line or scrimmage or past the linebackers, there's the secondary that includes seniors Ian Premer and Koehn Ribordy, and junior Cooper Ohnmacht. That trio, plus senior Jacob Hall, are capable of delivering vicious hits. 

Premer may have been recruited by all the top schools in the nation for his offensive talents, but his 14 career interceptions, including six this season, rank No. 2 in school history. Ohnmacht has five picks this year, and Ribordy has four. The 17 team interceptions this season are fourth-best in school history.

Tonight, the Panther offense and defense will again be tested by a Hays High team that enters the rematch at 8-2 overall, with a 43-19 loss to Great Bend in October, and a 10-8 loss against an 8-2 Manhattan team that is still active in the Class 6A playoffs.

The American and service flags adorning the Golden Belt Veterans Memorial north of Great Bend danced in the gentle northeast breeze on an unseasonably warm November Tuesday afternoon as the Barton County community gathered for the annual Veterans Day memorial program to honor those who are or have served in the United States armed forces.

Local trumpeter Marc Webster opened the solemn occasion with reveille, followed by the Great Bend High School marching band performing a medley of musical themes from the different branches of the armed services, and Susan Williams, Barton County’s Register of Deeds, singing the anthem. Members of the Legion Riders Post 180 were present, and Boy Scouts were on hand.

"Welcome to our Veterans Day Memorial program,” said Toni Rice, chairperson of the Barton County Memorial Parks Advisory Committee, which organized the event at Golden Belt Memorial Park. Compared to years past when cold autumn winds met participants, “we finally have a beautiful day today to honor our veterans.”

Also at the observance were members of the Junior Air Force ROTC Color Guard from Washburn Rural High School.

Barton County commissioners Shawn Hutchinson, himself a veteran, Barb Esfeld and Duane Reif, and County Administrator Matt Patzner joined those present to honor the nation’s veterans.

Cadet Maj. Mariah McDonald of the Washburn Rural Junior ROTC presented a historical reading of President Dwight D. Eisenhower's 1954 proclamation officially changing the name of the Nov. 11 holiday from Armistice Day to Veterans Day.

The proclamation called upon all citizens to observe the day to "solemnly remember the sacrifices of all those who have fought so valiantly... to preserve our heritage of freedom" and "reconsecrate ourselves to the task of promoting an enduring peace."

Cadet Capt. Kelcie Schneider, the granddaughter of Hoisington residents Norbert and Terry Schneider, spoke, highlighting the personal meaning of service and sacrifice.

"When we think about the word veteran, we think of courage, strength and service. But there's another word that always comes to mind: sacrifice," Schneider said, noting that her great-grandfather served in World War II and her father served in Korea and Iraq. "The freedoms I enjoy today were not free. They were earned, often at a great cost, by those who chose duty over comfort and courage over fear."

Schneider, speaking on behalf of the next generation, emphasized the responsibility that comes with freedom.

"I stand here today as a young cadet who understands that freedom is a gift, one that must be protected, appreciated and carried forward," she said. "I don't just stand in the shadow of those who served before me. I carry their torch, determined to honor their legacy through the way I live and serve others."

Keynote speaker challenges community

The featured speaker was retired Air Force Lt. Col. Ron Daniels, a former space and missile officer who now serves as the senior aerospace science instructor at Washburn Rural High School.

Daniels, who served for 24 years, challenged the audience to not only thank veterans but to live their lives in a way that honors their service. After asking veterans and then military family members to stand, Daniels noted that everyone present was connected to the military's sacrifices.

"Everybody tells you the type of honor to live with. They don't always tell you how to do it," Daniels said. He quoted C.S. Lewis from 1948, urging people to live sensible, human lives despite the threat of negativity or conflict, because the freedom to do so was provided by veterans.

"You should enjoy every day to its fullest, because it's a day the Lord has given you, and it's a day that the veterans of this great nation have provided for you," he said.

“Those of you that have served, those of you who are family members of people who have served, we all know the sacrifices,” he said. “I would dare say my family sacrificed more than I did because I was out doing my mission that I was called to do my family wasn't necessarily called to do that same mission, but yet they persevered. They not only persevered, but they encouraged me at every step of the way. And they were always, not only there for me, but they were there for those I served with.”

Daniels concluded by calling on the community to continue educating the youth about the value of service, citing the participation of the high school band and notes he received from third graders as signs of hope for the future.

The ceremony ended with the traditional laying of an evergreen and endless wreath by the scouts and the solemn folding of the U.S. flag by the color guard. The stirring strains of taps played by Webster echoed over the memorial park adding the final punctuation.

The 1999 school bond issue in Great Bend accomplished many
things. Some of those benefits are beginning to age out. During Monday’s USD 428
Board of Education meeting, the board approved a $1.2 million purchase for new heating,
ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) units at Great Bend High School.
Assistant Superintendent John Popp said the units to be replaced are the oldest
in the building, and one will require some thinking to get back into the crawlspace.

“The problem with that is we don’t believe the opening is
large enough to be able to put a new system, just like what’s in there, back in
there,” he said. “Somebody would essentially have to disassemble the unit, take
it underneath, then reassemble it, which would be very labor intensive and cost
prohibitive.”

That unit will serve the 2-story portion of GBHS. The other
units are rooftop units on top of the GBHS auditorium. The old units have
leaked freon in the past, and Maintenance Director Dirk Davis said the new units will also
be quieter than the current ones. He also addressed the new unit that will replace
the old unit in the crawlspace. 

“It would be something similar, but the units would be
smaller and easier to get down there,” he said. “You would still have the units
down in the basement, and the condensing unit would be on top. It would be much
more efficient and more compact to get down there.”

Wichita-based Innovative Groups will help the district
purchase the new units at a government rate, and also find contractors to install
the units. The work is expected to be completed this summer.

The Barton Fine and Performing Arts Hall of Fame Committee is inviting the public to submit nominations for Barton faculty, alumni, or individuals associated with the College who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in their artistic field.

Over its 56-year history, Barton Community College has been a regional leader in arts and arts education. This marks the Hall of Fame’s second year. Last year, the committee honored the following individuals who laid a foundation for the arts in the region through their years of service as Barton Fine and Performing Arts faculty:

needed to be followed for roof repairs between the Great Bend High School Field
House and PAC, the GBHS gymnasium, and at Park Elementary. The board ultimately
approved an architectural study on the roofs for $35,000.

“There may be roofing companies who would be willing to do
it without this,” Popp said. “For protection of the district, we need to have
these specs lined out very well so everyone knows what they’re bidding on and
we know exactly what is being put on the roofs.”

Board Member Deanna Essmiller said she has been approached
by a company that said it could do the work without an architectural study.
Popp and USD 428 Maintenance Director Dirk Davis insisted a study is necessary
based on the level of work needing completed. 

“If we just said we needed a new roof on Park, one roofing
company will bid us inferior product and be able to do it way cheaper,” Popp
said. “When the architects put out these bid specs, everybody has to be on the
same materials, the same level of replacement.”

Board Member Sara Williams asked if an architectural study
is a departure from recent roof repairs. Superintendent Khris Thexton said most
recent repairs have been a result of storm damage that did not require a study.
The last major project at Washington Elementary did require a similar study. Wichita-based
Innovative Groups will handle the study, and bids for the work will be
presented to the board at the January meeting.

RICE COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 3:30p.m. Tuesday in Rice County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2004 Chevy Cavalier driven by Adelina&nbsp;Tobisch, 16, Lyons, was northbound on Grand Avenue just south of U.S. 56. The driver made a westbound turn onto Taylor Street. A southbound 2014 Harley Davidson Tri-Glide driven by Lane Tilton, 66, Sterling, struck the right side of the car.

EMS transported Tilton to the Rice County Hospital. Tobisch was not injured. Tilton was not wearing a helmet, according to the KHP.

Kan. man hospitalized after motorcycle, car accident

Great Bend-based Fuller Industries Inc. announced Monday its Brush/Gript Department completed its annual ISO audit without any nonconformances for the second year in a row, said Quality Manager Tamara Jacobs, emphasizing the vital role of Fuller employees in making this happen.

The achievement underscores the company’s commitment to quality management systems and operational excellence in manufacturing aerospace parts. Fuller Industries has been manufacturing specialized brushes for the industry in Kansas for over 50 years.

The AS9100D certification builds on ISO 9001:2015 by adding aerospace-specific requirements, such as product safety, risk management, prevention of counterfeit parts and traceability. The standard, officially titled AS9100D Quality Management Systems – Requirements for Aviation, Space and Defense Organizations and agriculture, is essential for companies supplying parts or services to aerospace original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).

“The successful audit reinforces Fuller Industries’ credibility, improves operational efficiency, and enhances its ability to meet the stringent demands of the aviation, space, and defense industries,” she said.

 </figure>Great Bend-based Fuller Industries Inc. announced Monday its Brush/Gript Department completed its annual ISO audit without any nonconformances for the second year in a row, said Quality Manager Tamara Jacobs, emphasizing the vital role of Fuller employees in making this happen.The achievement underscores the company’s commitment to quality management systems and operational excellence in manufacturing aerospace parts. Fuller Industries has been manufacturing specialized brushes for the industry in Kansas for over 50 years."This achievement is a direct result of the dedication and hard work of our team members," Jacobs said.  </ul>Fuller Industries holds both AS9100D and ISO 9001:2015 certifications, which signal a robust quality management system (QMS) is in place, Jacobs said. “The ISO 9001:2015 certification is the world’s most widely adopted quality management standard, providing a framework for consistent quality, customer satisfaction and continual improvement.”The AS9100D certification builds on ISO 9001:2015 by adding aerospace-specific requirements, such as product safety, risk management, prevention of counterfeit parts and traceability. The standard, officially titled AS9100D Quality Management Systems – Requirements for Aviation, Space and Defense Organizations and agriculture, is essential for companies supplying parts or services to aerospace original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).“The successful audit reinforces Fuller Industries’ credibility, improves operational efficiency, and enhances its ability to meet the stringent demands of the aviation, space, and defense industries,” she said.
