Twice the winnings from last year's giveaway but only 55 of the 60 instant finalists showed up Saturday morning at the Crest Theater for Eagle Media's $20K Christmas Cash Giveaway, presented by Bauer Computers, Mayo Money Management, and Moeder Plumbing Heating &amp; Air, your Bryant Dealer, whatever it takes. Kaitlyn Suss, an eighth-grade science teacher at Great Bend Middle School, was nearly one of those no-shows. Her decision to attend paid off as her lucky No. 29 ball was picked as the winner.

Before Saturday, Suss had never won a major prize. She signed up at the UPS Store/Westside Market.

"I was just returning an Amazon package," she said. "I actually just signed up the one time and was like, 'Let's just try it.' I never thought I'd win."

Suss was joined by her daughter, Paige, on the stage as she was announced as the winner Saturday morning. She and her family will now have the opportunity to spend the prize money at any of the participating sponsors in the contest.

"My husband already has a huge list of what he wants to spend it on so I have no idea," Suss said.

Terry Wagner, who registered at Eagle Media, was the other last finalist on the stage. New to the contest this year, all instant finalists who did not win the grand prize were entered into a drawing for a $250 Great Bend Chamber of Commerce Gift Certificate. That winner was Rita Engle, who registered at Boone's Maytag as instant finalist No. 54.

$20K Christmas Cash Giveaway - Sign up today at Crest Theater

The landscape of USD 428 continues to change. At Monday's meeting, Assistant Superintendent John Popp confirmed for the board that three recent property sales involving the district will all be finalized by Dec. 19. He also updated the board on possible changes to the former Washington Elementary building at Washington and Lakin Aves.

"There are two parts to the Washington building," he said. "There's the newer part that was built circa the 1950s, I think, then the older part that was built in the 1900s. We have been talking for a while we'd like to tear down the old part. It's just an old building and there are a lot of issues."

The newer part of the building is currently utilized as the Parent Teacher Resource Center (PTRC). Popp said the goal is to demolish the 100-year-old portion of the building and make some renovations to the newer part, including updated bathrooms and HVAC improvements. 

The board took no action Monday night and Popp said he will contact Schaefer Architecture to examine the possibilities with the building. USD 428 looking into demolition at former Washington school

Youth in Central Kansas can learn the basics of bicycle maintenance and repair and ensure their bikes are ride-worthy at a bicycle mechanic workshop set for 1-3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15 at the Barton County Fairgrounds Expo I building. The event is hosted by the new Golden Belt Badgers youth mountain bike team, which is sanctioned by the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA).&nbsp;

Participants can visit various stations dedicated to maintaining and adjusting their bicycles, like setting their saddle height and what NICA refers to as the ABCDEs of bike maintenance:

“Our team is all about community and getting kids on bikes,” Team Director Ruth Schiller said. “The focus of the event is to add to the bike culture in the area and help kids keep their bikes rolling. We will have a booth available for more information about the Badgers Team and the opportunity to sign up.”

Golden Belt Badgers youth mountain bike team to start its first season in 2025

Youth in sixth through 12th grades can now sign up for the Golden Belt Badgers and participate in the 2025 season. Parents interested in signing their children up for the Golden Belt Badgers simply need to submit a form at <a href="http://tinyurl.com/4f8euusj">tinyurl.com/4f8euusj</a> and they will receive some instructions and an invite into NICA’s Pit Zone, which is the league’s online portal. Questions can be directed to Team Director Ruth Schiller at <a href="mailto:hrsuccesslive@gmail.com">hrsuccesslive@gmail.com</a>.

“The Golden Belt Badgers bike team will provide our local youth the opportunity to be part of a community-focused sport, one that encourages fun while engaging in skilled and safe trail riding,” she said. “Every participant will compete at the race events. In this sport, no one is left on the bench.”

The team already has more than a dozen certified coaches. A low coach-to-athlete ratio is necessary to ensure individualized learning opportunities and safety on the trail. Steinert said having access to a mountain bike team would have made a huge difference in his own childhood.

“I would have loved something like this as a kid, as the typical ‘ball sports’ were certainly not my thing, and never really felt like I fit in with sports like football or basketball,” he said. “If this were available, it would have drastically changed my entire junior high and high school experience. I’m hoping this opportunity will help young athletes see that there is far more breadth to the world of sports. And, maybe we’ll even help some adults see that growing up doesn’t mean we have to stop considering ourselves to be athletes.”

Golden Belt Badgers hosting bike workshop ahead of 2025 racing season

Someone is about to have a very, Merry Christmas. Tomorrow is the last day for Eagle Media's 20K Christmas Cash Giveaway, brought to you by Bauer Computers, Mayo Money Management, and Moeder Heating Plumbing &amp; Air, your Bryant Dealer, whatever it takes. Eagle's Promotions Director Rebecca Fletcher said one more lucky person will have the opportunity to be an instant finalist Saturday morning at the Crest Theater in downtown Great Bend, courtesy of Eldridge Fencing.

"You can go in, get yourself signed up from 9 until 10, then at 10 a.m., we're going to draw that last-chance name," she said. "It's going to go up front on the stage to the board, then we're going to start the giveaway."

There will be 61 finalists for this year's giveaway. The winner will have the opportunity to spend the $20,000 at one of several businesses in Great Bend and Barton County.

There is a heavy focus on soccer right now at the Great Bend Recreation Commission,
and the participation numbers show a big interest in soccer from the community.
The Rec finished up their instructional soccer classes for preschool-aged
children and shifted to adult and youth leagues. There are 37 youth soccer
teams this year. 


GBRC Sports Director Shane Sandberg said Executive Director Chris Umphres
suggested a change to the walls set up at the City Auditorium for indoor soccer
this year. To make the facility more user friendly during soccer season, the
wall on the west side of the gym was moved off the stage creating a walkway.


"We put some plates on the floor to anchor the braces down in there," said Sandberg. "Now people can still walk during the day all the way around. For our games, you can walk back and forth to the restroom much easier without having to go all the way around. It's been a big hit."

The Rec also has five adult women’s teams for soccer this year. There are seven
adult men’s teams. Sandberg said soccer games run from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturdays
and again from 12:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Sundays.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Soccer focus at Great Bend Rec, indoor walls adjusted for users

Fort Hays State University’s Kansas Wetlands Education Center will host several drop-in events on Thursday, Dec. 26, and Friday, Dec. 27.

The December WILD program will take place on Thursday at 10 a.m.&nbsp;in the KWEC Classroom. Participants will learn more about the animals behind common tracks and will have the opportunity to make a plaster track ornament to take home.

Weather permitting, participants will look for tracks and evidence of Cheyenne Bottom's winter residents along the nature trail. WILD is a monthly series for school-age kids and their families. The mission is to get kids outside exploring and off their devices. No registration is required for this free activity.&nbsp;

Then, on Friday from 1-3:30 p.m., participants can experience the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math of winter trees through a variety of hands-on interactive activities.&nbsp;Come out for an afternoon of adventure, a come-and-go event.

Get your winter break wiggles out and join us for a fun and educational Drop-in STEM day with a winter trees theme. This event is perfect for curious minds of all ages.

Other speakers include Hi-Plains Farm Credit, and Dr. Jenny Ifft, the Flinchbaugh Agricultural Policy Chair&nbsp;in the Kansas State Agricultural Economics Department.&nbsp;

Farm Credit will guide attendees through designing a budget and financial planning. Dr. Ifft will present on Livestock Risk Protection, LRP. LRP is a popular risk management tool among producers involved in the feeder cattle market.

With hot cocoa, cookies and hand warmers available, Great Bend Economic
Development conducted a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday afternoon for the
IGNITE Innovation Center. Donors and business partners took part in the ceremonial
shovel dig at the site on Farmers Plaza, at 10th Street and K-96 Highway.


Economic Development Board Vice Chair Ryan Fairchild said the Innovation Center
is a testament to the commitment to the community’s future.


"The Innovation Center will open doors for community members in all stages of life," said Fairchild. "With an eye on vocational tools, unlike anything else in the area, this makes Barton County all that more attractive as a place to live, relocate, raise a family and start a business."

The project has an estimated budget of $7 million and is being funded through
grants and donations.&nbsp;

The center will include a makerspace with 3D printers, flight simulators and welders. A commercial kitchen, farm pod, computer lab, meeting
room and podcast studio will be also be available. Two childcare rooms will be
included for after-hours and even overnight childcare services for those
parents and guardians working late shifts.


"Quality workforce, life and education are the foundation of a healthy, local economy," said Fairchild. "Just as the oil boom did for this area, new and innovative opportunities are a must to continue to thrive as a community."

Barton County officials attend the Kansas Association of Counties Conference each year to stay up to date on issues affecting county governments and what the state is doing to help or hurt counties. The 49th Annual KAC Annual Conference and Exposition was held Dec. 3-5 in Topeka. Emergency Management Director Sean Kelly accepted an award, on behalf of the county, from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Kansas for bridge improvements.

"They only handed out two awards this year and we were one of the recipients for the design and construction work we did," Kelly said. "It's a good testament to what the commission does to invest in our county. When we do projects like that, it's a big infrastructure boost. It helps the ag communities big time and gets rid of some of our older bridges out there."

Kirkham Michael &amp; Associates did the engineering work and L&amp;M Contractors did the construction on off-system bridge No. 202 just east of the former Kiowa Kitchen on East Barton County Road. The bridge was widened from 19 feet to 28 feet, which allows for large farm equipment to pass through.

The old bridge was approximately 100 years old. The county paid $605,603 to have the work completed and was reimbursed $514,762 through the Kansas Department of Transportation's Local Bridge Improvement Program. The county has replaced three bridges in the area in less than a decade.

Barton County recognized for work completed on 100-year-old bridge

Lots of property means lots of utility costs. USD 428 Superintendent Khris Thexton recently attended a breakout session regarding solar energy at the Kansas Association of School Boards meeting. Monday evening, he shared information with the board of education about placing solar panels on select Great Bend schools.

"I know there's been a lot of discussion in our community and our surrounding area, but more of the commercial side," he said. "This would actually be panels that would be affixed to our roofs."

Hutton, with several locations in Kansas, presented information to districts about the benefits of using solar energy. Kansas ranks sixth in the nation for average peak sunshine hours. Among the 12 states surrounding Kansas and to the south, Kansas is second only to Colorado for the most expensive electric energy. Thexton said utilizing panels at the Great Bend Middle School, Panther Athletic Center west of the high school, and the District Education Center could benefit the district.

USD 428 Superintendent Khris Thexton recently attended a breakout session regarding solar energy at the Kansas Association of School Boards meeting. Monday evening, he shared information with the board of education about placing solar panels on select Great Bend schools."I know there's been a lot of discussion in our community and our surrounding area, but more of the commercial side," he said. "This would actually be panels that would be affixed to our roofs."Hutton, with several locations in Kansas, presented information to districts about the benefits of using solar energy. Kansas ranks sixth in the nation for average peak sunshine hours. Among the 12 states surrounding Kansas and to the south, Kansas is second only to Colorado for the most expensive electric energy. The Great Bend High School (GBHS) A Cappella Choir will present its 88th Annual Vespers Candlelight Concert on Sunday, December 15, at 2:00 PM in the GBHS Auditorium, located at 2027 Morton Street, Great Bend, KS. The GBHS A Cappella Choir is directed by Susan Stambaugh, whose leadership upholds the choir’s proud legacy.

Immediately following the A Cappella Choir performance, the USD 428 Youth Choir will take the stage at 3:30 PM in the GBHS Auditorium. Directed by the district’s talented vocal music teachers, this concert features 65 auditioned singers from fourth through eighth grades, showcasing the promising talent of Great Bend’s youth.

The celebration of music continues on Monday, December 16, at 7:30 PM, when the GBHS Vocal Music Department presents its Holiday Concert. This evening performance will feature the GBHS Concert Choir and Madrigals, promising a vibrant and festive culmination to the holiday music season.
