Barton County Commission agenda (July 29, 2025)

On May 15, 2025, Daniel Mayer of Agency, Mo. set a new Kansas fishing record when he hauled in a 121-pound blue catfish in the Missouri River. Two months later, the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks has announced updated regulations for blue catfish.

Beginning July 25, anglers are allowed to keep 10 of the fish of any size but only one may be greater than 30 inches. In other words, anglers could keep all 10 fish if each were 25 inches, or they could keep nine 25-inch fish and keep an additional 40-inch blue catfish. The new regulation applies to all bodies of water in Kansas with a few exceptions:

- Milford Reservoir – daily creel of 10 fish, protected slot 28-40 inches, only one fish above 40 inches

- Kanopolis Reservoir – 35-inch minimum, 5 fish daily

- Pomona Reservoir – daily creel of 5 fish any size

- LaCygne Reservoir – daily creel of 5 fish any size

- Missouri River – daily creel of 5 fish, only one over 30″

- Browning Oxbow – daily creel of 5 fish, only one over 30″

- Several rivers in Southeast and South Central Kansas – 10 fish, any size

The new regulation is meant to increase fishing opportunities while also thinning the blue catfish population to allow for more growth. Mayer's catfish measured 59.75 inches and broke the previous weight record set in 2012 by more than 18 pounds.

The madness begins at 6 p.m. in downtown Larned with shopping, food trucks, snow cones, music, train rides, a car show, and more until 8 p.m. The Mrs. Doubtfire Costume Contest begins at 7 p.m. at the Larned Chamber office, 502 Broadway. The winner of the contest will walk away with a 50-inch television. A little more than a year has passed since LaResa and Eugene Likes announced that Great Bend Coffee in downtown Great Bend was up for sale. The plan was to continue operating the business as usual until a buyer was found. Last week, with still no buyer in sight, the Likes announced the business would be closing on Aug. 30.

"Leaving Great Bend Coffee is far from easy for me," LaResa said in a Facebook post. For over 10 and a half years, this place has been more than just a business - it's been the heart of my life's passion, a space where I have been fortunate enough to do what I love every single day. Along the way, I have been blessed to meet so many incredible individuals, forging friendships and memories that I will cherish forever."

According to the Facebook post, property within the building will be sold beginning in September. A date has not been finalized, but the Likes are planning an appreciation dinner in August.

The Likes purchased Great Bend Coffee from Paul and Barb Wagner 10 years ago. Last July, LaResa announced the sale of the business in part so she could spend more time with family. A hallmark of the business has been making everything from scratch.

The plan was to continue operating the business as usual until a buyer was found. Last call: Great Bend Coffee announces Aug. 30 closing date

August marks National Breastfeeding Month, a time to recognize and support one of the most natural and essential forms of infant nutrition. Championed by the U.S. Breastfeeding Committee and support by healthcare advocates nationwide, this month highlights the importance of breastfeeding for both babies and mothers—while calling for stronger community, workplace and policy support for families.

Breastfeeding is more than just a feeding choice. It’s a powerful tool for lifelong health and development. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, breastfeeding offers optimal nutrition, boosts babies’ immune system, reduces risks of chronic illnesses and fosters attachment between mother and child. Mothers also benefit with reduced risks of breast and ovarian cancers, osteoporosis, type 2 diabetes and postpartum depression. According to an epidemiological study published in the The Lancet, breastfeeding is dose specific, which means the longer a woman breastfeeds, the lower her risk for developing breast cancer. For every 12 months of breastfeeding, the risk of breast cancer goes down by 4.3%. This can be for one child or a combination of children.

Yet despite the well-documented benefits, many families face significant barriers to breastfeeding—from lack of parental leave and workplace accommodations to misinformation and social stigma.

The 2025 theme is “Forward Together” which emphasizes the importance of connecting families with evidence-based information, peer support and community networks. It’s a call to action for healthcare providers, employers, policy makers and communities to create environments where breastfeeding is normalized, encouraged, and supported.

Great Bend Rec announces men's softball league champions

Fueled by a desire to be a good role model for her daughter, Barton Community College at Fort Riley graduate Ciara Adamo found everything she needed right on base to embark on her educational journey to become a forensic psychologist.

"As a spouse of a military member, Barton made it easy for me because they offered flexible learning options, and the classes offered through the LSEC Program are available at no cost and at an accelerated pace," she said.

Barton is a designated "military-friendly" school and has offered the Big Red One educational opportunities since 1982. In that time, Barton developed expertise in accommodating the unique and demanding lives of soldiers and their families, and Adamo experienced this expertise throughout her experience.

"I absolutely would say Barton is military-friendly because they offer flexible class options such as evening and online classes," she said. "This flexibility allows soldiers and spouses to pursue further education while fulfilling their other obligations."

Barton's LSEC program is a core element of their offerings, and active-duty soldiers, their dependents, veterans, and Department of Defense employees can take advantage of the program at no cost, thanks to initiatives provided by the military.

"The affordability is important because it allows you to pursue further education without the financial burden, which means the money I saved, I can now put towards my bachelor's degree," she said.

Adamo graduated in December and now plans to earn her bachelor's degree in forensic psychology and a doctorate in psychology. She hopes to become a victim advocate then.

"I want to go into this field to help others," she said. "I believe no one should feel alone in any situation."

Adamo said the people ultimately made her time at Barton special.

"My Barton experience was nothing but positive," she said. "The faculty is amazing, the front desk admins are wonderful, and the counselors are helpful."

Barton at Fort Riley student pursues forensic psychologist career

Elections have always been about math. In a general sense, the candidate who collects the most votes wins the race. The math got a little more complicated for the single ward two spot on the Great Bend City Council. Barton County Clerk Bev Schmeidler appeared on 1590 KVGB/95.5 FM's "County Edition" program with Dakota Tucker Thursday to explain why a primary race is currently underway.

"There is one seat open on the second ward," she said. "If any time three times plus one file for that position - so when the fourth person filed, that created a primary for us. Only the registered voters in the second ward can vote in this particular election for Aug. 5."

Early voting began July 16 at the clerk's office on the second floor of the Barton County Courthouse. Early voting continues Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Aug. 1, and from 8 a.m. to noon on Monday, Aug. 4. On Tuesday, Aug. 5, voting moves to the Prince of Peace Parish, 4100 Broadway Ave., in Great Bend, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The top-two vote getters of the four candidates will advance to the November election. 

This primary is only for voters in Great Bend's second ward, so overall numbers will be down regardless. Schmeidler said the percentage of registered voters who turn out is typically down in odd years.

"The turnout is higher in the even-numbered years when we have the governor or presidential race," she said. "When we have those elections, the turnout is always higher. The city-school elections have always had a lower turnout, which I think is really sad because those are the ones that touch our every day lives. Your city councils make the decisions for what goes on in your cities and communities. Your school boards decide what happen with your children in school."

Nearly 60 percent of Barton County voters turned out in the 2016 general election in which Donald Trump defeated Hillary Clinton for the presidency. That number dropped to just 24 percent in the 2017 general election, then rebounded to 49 percent in the 2018 general in which Kansas Governor Laura Kelly retained her seat. Fewer than 25 percent of voters turned out in 2019, and 68 percent voted in 2020, another presidential race year. Sixty-three percent turned out in the 2024 general election.

Barton Community College announces spring 2025 graduates

Like father, like son. The adage does not always come true but its well underway for the Hanzlick family. Brian Hanzlick has served Central Kansas as game warden with the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks for decades. His son, Hunter, was recently hired to be a certified law enforcement officer and assistant land manager at Cheyenne Bottoms.

"This has been my dream job ever since going to college and working toward my wildlife biology degree," Hunter said. "Growing up here, I've loved it. I shot my first teal at Long Lake at the Bottoms. Moving way, you take for granted what you have at the Bottoms. It's good to be back."

Hanzlick was a multi-sport standout at Hoisington High School, rushing for nearly 1,500 yards and leading the Cardinal football team to a 12-1 record and state semifinal appearance in 2016. After his graduation in 2017, he played football at Baker University before moving on to Fort Hays State University.

After graduating from FHSU, Hunter spent time as a private lands specialist for Pheasants Forever. He also did seasonal work at Cheyenne Bottoms. After spending the past four years at McPherson Valley Wetlands, Hanzlick is coming back home to Barton County to work under Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Area Manager Jason Wagner.

"I think every public lands manager in the state, every time there was a job opening, was hoping it was Hunter Hanzlick on the application list," Wagner said. "We had some really strong applicants for that job. A job like working at Cheyenne Bottoms is pretty noteworthy and really desirable, so it wasn't like we were playing into his hand. We had some really strong applicants."

As assistant public lands manager at Cheyenne Bottoms, Hanzlick will do a little of everything. Roughly one-fifth of the job will involve law enforcement, but the brunt of the job will revolve around seasonal work like planting millet to attract birds and helping Wagner with maintenance work.

"It's different each day, and that's what I love about this job," said Hanzlick. "You kind of have a game plan but you never know what's going to come up."

"We had some really strong applicants for that job. A job like working at Cheyenne Bottoms is pretty noteworthy and really desirable, so it wasn't like we were playing into his hand. We had some really strong applicants."As assistant public lands manager at Cheyenne Bottoms, Hanzlick will do a little of everything. Roughly one-fifth of the job will involve law enforcement, but the brunt of the job will revolve around seasonal work like planting millet to attract birds and helping Wagner with maintenance work."It's different each day, and that's what I love about this job," said Hanzlick. "You kind of have a game plan but you never know what's going to come up."It's been a while since the area had a certified law enforcement officer to enforce the laws. Wagner said most visitors to the Bottoms follow the rules, but other than Hanzlick's 14-week absence to get certified through the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center, it will be nice to have someone in that role, especially when as many as 800 hunters visit the Bottoms each day during hunting season."The role in law enforcement is going to vary a little bit depending on the time of year," Wagner said. "This time of year, he's probably not going to be doing as much law enforcement. You may not be writing tons of tickets but just having that presence there prevents a lot of things from happening."
