The Shafer Art Gallery will host an opening reception for “Go Figure,” a new exhibition drawn entirely from the Barton Community College Foundation’s permanent collection highlighting artwork focused on the human form in a wide range of artistic expressions, from 4–6 p.m. Jan. 16 in the gallery and will include light refreshments.

Gallery Director Alyssa Bliven said the show features portraits, figurative works, sculpture, prints, a historic temple rubbing, and more, showcasing work by local artists alongside pieces by world-renowned figures such as Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí.

“This is a really unique show because several pieces have never before been on public display,” she said. “This includes a selection of nude studies that have remained in the gallery’s collection room for decades. The exhibition offers visitors a rare opportunity to explore artworks that reflect both the depth and history of the Foundation’s permanent collection.”

The exhibition is curated by Barton’s Executive Director of Institutional Advancement and Foundation Director Lindsey Bogner.

“This exhibition is an exciting opportunity to share a collection that has been built through decades of generosity,” she said. “Much of this artwork was donated over time, and bringing it together as the “Go Figure” show allows us to celebrate the human experience while providing an invaluable learning resource for students and expanding cultural access for our community.”

Barton County Sheriff's Office Booking activity (1/7)

A month after appearing before the Great Bend City Council to discuss updates at the Innovation Center on West 10th Street and his organization's role in the community, Great Bend Economic Development Director Jason Kuilan again appeared before the body Monday night to provide more updates. Kuilan opened his statement by explaining the role of economic development organizations.

"Economic development is the process of improving the economic well-being and quality of life for the community by creating jobs, bringing new money into the community, increasing incomes, expanding business activity, and enhancing conditions that support long-term, sustainable growth," he said.

Kuilan then discussed how Great Bend Eco Devo is meeting each of those goals. In terms of job growth, Eco Devo runs a free job site for job seekers and providers. To date, the organization has posted more than 580 jobs, has more than 280 resumes on file, and has filled 403 jobs. More than 120 companies have registered to use the feature.

As for expanding business activity in the area, in the past two years, Great Bend Eco Devo has helped Freaking Delicious Cheesecake, K9 Training Academy, Tankquility, First Response Cleaning and Restoration, Rhue Rituals, and Proper Boards through its IGNITE Rural Business competition. Countless other local businesses have benefited from Eco Devo's various entrepreneurship programs.

Then there's the big one: how much do the programs cost and what value do they bring to the area?

"In the past two years, we have received $758,000 in funding from either the city or the county," said Kuilan. "That $758,000 has turned into $9.5 million. That's a 12.5x multiplier. As a business owner myself, if I received $12.50 for every dollar spent, I'd continue to invest in that pretty heavily."

Much of that money has been generated via grants to support the creation of multiple childcare centers, downtown projects, the Innovation Center, the hotel project in Great Bend, and more. Kuilan also highlighted the various projects that have helped bring life to downtown and support local businesses.

"That said, there is plenty more work to be done," he said. "We need to focus on continuing to bring in grant money to the region. We need to find solutions to the housing challenges. We need to continue to entice current businesses to reinvest back into the area, while also finding the right incentives to bring in new businesses. We need to continue the momentum that our downtown currently has and find the right businesses to reinvigorate the entire downtown. We need to do a lot of things, but none of this will happen overnight." 

Finally, Kuilan provided an update on construction work at the Innovation Center. He said winterization of the building should be finalized in the next 2-3 weeks. 

Councilman Gary Parr raised concerns about the general contractor for the project, Seaton, possibly pulling up stakes Monday morning.

"He said they had no plans in that because they didn't know what was going on, and they couldn't leave their resources sitting there, which is their job office, so he said they're not left any choice," Parr said. "I said, 'What about the roof blowing off?' He said, 'I've been on those guys for weeks, now, about getting that secured.' He said, 'I don't know what's going to happen after this point because I'm not scheduled to come back here anymore.'"

Kuilan confirmed on Wednesday that Seaton has relocated its mobile office to another location while the Innovation Center project is on pause, but is still otherwise involved with the Great Bend Project.

Parr also asked when the council would receive its quarterly financial report from Eco Devo, and why the body has not received reports for the last year.

"If you asked and didn't get them, I don't know the answer to that," said Kuilan, who was hired near the close of 2025.

"Somebody from your organization is supposed to show up here and give us one of those," Parr replied. "We shouldn't have to track anybody down for that."

Discussions centered on improving mobile crisis response and dispatch technology, enhancing 988-911 interoperability, and expanding outreach to ensure statewide access to services. The council also reviewed trends in sustainable funding used by other states, assessing long-term budget capacity as demand increases.&nbsp;

&nbsp;In Kansas, the 988 call centers are independently operated and receive additional state funding and oversight from KDADS and the coordinating council. The report includes recommendations for legislators to consider.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The 988 Coordinating Council recommends that the legislature take action to ensure the long-term&nbsp;sustainability and growth of Kansas’s 988 system by increasing available funding and maintaining coordinated oversight of crisis response services. Specifically, the council recommends increasing the budget for 988 operations and related crisis services, either by:&nbsp;

An additional recommendation from the council is to extend the 988 Coordinating Council beyond June 30, 2026, to provide continued oversight, coordination, and system development.&nbsp;

Kansas’s 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline Coordinating Council reports year-3 data

Editor's note: The Kansas Department of Labor did not publish separate reports for the October and November due to the government shutdown.

Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information (LMI) division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.8% in November. This is unchanged from 3.8% in September and unchanged from 3.8% in November 2024. The labor force participation rate for Kansas increased to 67.4% in November.

The unemployment rate in Barton County is down from 3.6 percent in&nbsp; September to 3.4 percent in November. The rate in Pawnee County dropped from 3.1 percent in September to 2.8 percent. The rate is also down significantly across the region.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 3,800 from October. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs increased by 3,800 over the month, while government remained unchanged. The largest job gains in the private sector were in&nbsp;trade, transportation, and utilities&nbsp;(+1,500 jobs). The largest decrease was in leisure and hospitality&nbsp;(-300 jobs).

Since November 2024 Kansas’ seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 3,500. This change is due to an increase of 5,400 private sector jobs and a decrease of 1,900 government jobs.

Technical Note:This release includes nonfarm jobs and labor force estimates for November 2025, which are produced using data from two monthly surveys. Jobless rate continues downward trend in Barton County

Kansas State University veterinarian Gregg Hanzlicek said being prepared ahead of calving season is the best way for producers to assure they will bring home the newborn calves successfully.

“We're moving into the third trimester which means the metabolic demands of that cow or heifer are going to increase tremendously,” Hanzlicek said. 

A key to having a successful calving and production season is for cows and heifers to be in the appropriate body condition, which according to Hanzlicek is a score of 5-7. 

“We’re far enough away from calving that we can add condition to these cows and heifers without (creating) an economic burden,” he said. “It really comes down to having a formulated ration that is balanced for protein and energy.” 

For those wanting to add scour vaccines to their prevention program, “it’s time to decide what vaccine they are going to use,” Hanzlicek said. “Look at the label and schedule on the calendar when they need to start vaccinating the cows and heifers.” 

Hanzlicek said heifers will require two doses of the scours vaccine, while cows need one. The timing of those vaccines is “very, very important,” he said. Also, Hanzlicek recommends establishing a clean calving area to help reduce the risk of scours. 

“There’s two major risk factors for scours,” he said. “One is the lack of colostrum consumption. The other is a contaminated environment that the babies are born into.” 

Hanzlicek recommends having a location to move the pairs off the calving area to keep the calving facility less contaminated with the scour organisms. Getting the calf here safely is another factor to consider, "Most operations are going to have to help at least one animal during the calving season,” Hanzlicek said. The last national survey indicated that 1 of every 100 heifers and 2 of every 100 adult cows will need assistance. Being prepared to pull a calf is important. Hanzlicek said producers should have the following items on hand:

Intervening at an appropriate time is important. “If we intervene too early and the cow or heifer is not dilated, we can injure the tissues and hurt the calf,” Hanzlicek said. “If we intervene too late, a lot of times that’s when we end up with stillborn calves.” According to Hanzlicek, once a cow has reached the second stage of labor, they should give birth within 30 minutes. A heifer should calve within an hour. Second stage labor is when the heifer or cow can be observed experiencing uterine contractions, or the water-bag or calf’s feet are visible. If assistance from the producer is needed, and they are unable to extract the calf within 15 minutes, then help – either a veterinarian or someone with more experience -- should be called.

Following calving, the calf should be up and nursing within two hours, Hanzlicek said. If not, a colostrum replacer can be given to help get the calf started.

“Colostrum-based powders are the best way to go, and I would recommend that every producer have one or two bags of powder replacer on hand during the calving season,” Hanzlicek said.

BOOR: Being prepared for calving season can pay off in big ways

As the song suggests, many dream of a white Christmas. That was hardly the case in 2025 as temperatures around the big holiday hovered in and around the 70s. Temperatures were also mild for the Cheyenne Bottoms Christmas Bird Count on Dec. 15. Kansas Wetlands Education Center Director Curtis Wolf said the weather made an impact on the 51st count of its kind in the area. 

"With it being as mild as it was, and there right before Christmas it was about as mild as you can get, there were a lot of birds here, and it showed in our data," Wolf said. "We actually came up with 100 species we observed on that day. That's an all-time high count."

The previous high was 97 species in 2020. Two dozen volunteers spent the day checking out a 15-mile radius around the Bottoms that included areas in Great Bend, Hoisington, and Ellinwood. Six species were included in the local count for the first time: black-bellied whistling duck, pectoral sandpiper, greater scaup, red-breasted merganser, Bonaparte's gull, and great egret. Nine more saw record numbers, including 78 blue-winged teal, 257 bufflehead ducks, 63 double-crested cormorant, 27 short-eared owl, and 27 white-faced ibis. Eighty-eight bald eagles was also a new high.

"Their story is such a cool one," said Wolf. "Over the last 20 years, for sure, their numbers have just really exploded all over the U.S. It's a huge success story for endangered species and protected species."

The Cheyenne Bottoms count is one of approximately 40 around the state of Kansas, and one of hundreds around the nation held between mid-December and January each year. The National Audubon Society and Kansas Ornithological Society use the data to track bird behavior.

Barton County Sheriff's Booking activity (1/6)

Nice things cost money. How much money became a point of contention during Monday's Great Bend City Council meeting. Council Member Gary Parr withdrew his affirming vote from the Dec. 15 council meeting, in which the council approved a $705,000 contract with engineering firm JEO to design a new city pool, which will cost approximately $9.55 million to complete. 

"I've talked to a great deal of people over the last three weeks, over the holidays," Parr said. "I think their definition of what 'quality of life' is, and what ours is, might be considerably different. I didn't talk to a single person who said 'quality of life' is a brand-new $10 million pool."

Parr said he cannot in good conscience approve the project, as his constituents are telling him "quality of life" means better infrastructure, including streets, sewer, and water. He said better streets to get to the new pool may be better for the city's growth than a new pool that is open just a few months out of the year.

Council Member Kevin Soupiset asked to define "quality of life" versus infrastructure. Voters have approved two measures regarding the issues. The quarter-cent sales tax for infrastructure improvements will again be on the ballot for voters in 2027. Voters approved the 0.15 percent sales tax for quality of life measures in 2022. As discussed in previous council meetings, those funds cannot be used on infrastructure. Surveys surrounding the passage of the quality of life tax sales indicated a new pool was what residents wanted.

Council Member Tina Mingenback was on the pool committee that helped come up with a final design. She said costs were cut to make the project possible, and that without this project, there would be no pool after the 2026 season. The committee performed a balancing act of affordability and including the features residents wanted.

"If we don't do that, we are just going to have a hole for people to go to," she said. "That alone, right there, costs about $8 million."

City Administrator Logan Burns said the city will continue to look into grants to help pay for the project, including one that opens this month, and a Land and Water Conservation Grant that opens in June. The quality of life sales tax generated just under $730,000 last year. Through a bond, the city will pay approximately $560,000 annually for the pool over a 20-year period. 

The council previously voted 8-0 to approve the new pool project, with construction expected to be completed ahead of the 2027 swim season.

ELLIS COUNTY —Police are investigating a fatal pedestrian accident in Hays.

Just before 6p.m. Saturday, police responded to the report of an injury accident in the 1400 block of Hall Street in Hays, according to a media release. Officers arrived to find citizens assisting a pedestrian that had been struck by a car while crossing Hall Street.

According to police, the preliminary investigation indicates that a vehicle traveling northbound on Hall Street struck the pedestrian, an 82-year-old Hays resident, while he was crossing Hall Street in the crosswalk near 15th Street.

The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle remained on scene and cooperated with law enforcement.

The pedestrian received emergency treatment at the scene and was transported to HaysMed, 2220 Canterbury Drive. He was later air-lifted to a Wichita trauma center. He died during the transport, according to police.

Anyone with information relating to this incident is encouraged to contact Hays Police Department Detective Dave Gillan at (785) 625-1030.

Western Cooperative Electric is proud to announce a new community partnership with the Olmitz Park Project, a grassroots effort focused on establishing a much-needed public park in the heart of Olmitz, Kansas.

Olmitz, a small town in Barton County with a population of approximately 90 residents, is quietly booming with youth — roughly 30 of those residents are children. Despite its size, the town currently has no central park or gathering space for families, children, or visitors.

Through this partnership, Western Cooperative Electric will focus its 2026 community efforts on helping the Olmitz Park Committee raise funds to transform a donated open area in the middle of town into a welcoming, family-friendly park. Renderings for the proposed park have already been developed, and once completed, the space will be open for both community members and visitors.

Olmitz continues to attract visitors from across the region, particularly to That “New” Place Bar &amp; Grill and the town’s well-known church, which recently experienced significant damage from a break-in. The proposed park represents an opportunity to bring renewed energy, pride, and connection to the town while honoring its resilience and strong sense of community.

Fundraising Efforts Kick Off January 18

The fundraising initiative will officially kick off on January 18, 2026, with a community soup luncheon titled “Bowls, Rolls and Power Poles,” hosted by Western Cooperative Electric. The event will be offered as a free-will donation meal, with all proceeds benefiting the Olmitz Park Project.

Additional fundraising events are already in the works, including a Save the Date for an Adult Prom on May 2, 2026. The evening will include dinner, dancing, and auction items, with a limited number of tickets available. Organizers note it will make a perfect early Mother’s Day date gift. Ticket sales information will be announced soon.

Beyond events, the Olmitz Park Committee plans to pursue grant funding and seek donations from area businesses, organizations, and individuals throughout 2026 to make the park a reality.

The Olmitz Park Committee would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to previous donors and supporters. Past donations have already been put to meaningful use, including assisting with cleanup and supplies following the church break-in, along with other smaller community improvement projects.

Western Coop Electric partners with Olmitz Park Project to bring new life to community

The City of Great Bend Utilities Department is reminding customers about the importance of backflow prevention devices and providing an update on required annual testing.

Backflow prevention devices are safety devices installed on certain water connections to help protect the public drinking water system. They prevent water from flowing backward into the city’s water lines, which can happen during events such as water main breaks, firefighting activities, pressure changes, or when private systems like irrigation, fire suppression or industrial equipment are connected to the water supply. Without proper protection, these situations can allow contaminants to enter the public water system.

The City of Great Bend adopted the 2018 Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC), which requires backflow prevention devices on water connections connected to the municipal water supply system that could pose a risk to the public water system. These requirements apply to properties served by city water and do not apply to private well systems that are not connected to the city’s water system. In general, a backflow preventer is required when a property has a condition where water could potentially flow back into the city’s water lines. Common examples include lawn irrigation (sprinkler) systems, fire sprinkler systems, commercial or industrial plumbing, boilers, chemical or process equipment, or any connection where chemicals, fertilizers or non-potable water are present.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) requires that backflow prevention devices be tested annually by a certified tester to confirm they are working properly. These tests are a critical part of protecting Great Bend’s drinking water and ensuring the system remains safe for all customers.

The utilities department is currently working through a backlog of known or previously reported backflow prevention devices to bring all required testing into compliance with KDHE requirements. Due to the number of devices involved and the coordination required with property owners and certified testers, this process will take time. To manage this effort efficiently, the city will be sending compliance notifications in small groups of approximately 25–30 properties at a time as we work through the existing backlog of known or previously reported backflow prevention devices. This phased approach allows staff to provide appropriate follow-up and assistance without disrupting service operations. Once the backlog has been addressed, the city will begin targeted outreach to other properties that may be at higher risk based on system connections and usage. Customers who are not contacted during the notification phase do not need to take action at this time.

As part of this process, annual backflow testing results must be submitted through Brycer – The Compliance Engine (TCE).&nbsp;This system is used by the city to track compliance and maintain accurate testing records. A weekend of military action atop the world's largest proven oil reserves is having little impact on prices. Amid what's approaching a global oil glut, US actions in Venezuela are not expected to disrupt prices much, according to widespread analysis online. At just over $57 a barrel, NYMEX near-month crude settled Friday a dime lower than the pre-holiday close on Wednesday. Offers on Monday dropped as low as $56 in the morning. Prices were nearly a dollar higher by lunchtime, with New York crude topping $58 per barrel and London Brent rising toward $62.

Kansas prices dropped 25 cents on Friday (1/5) and starts the week at $47.50 per barrel. The monthly average price in McPherson dips to its lowest level in nearly five years. CHS reports the average for December is a fraction over $48.11 per barrel for Kansas Common, the lowest monthly average since January of 2021.

Year-end analysis by The Energy Information Administration shows Brent crude prices dropping from a monthly average of $79 per barrel in January to a low of $63 per barrel in December. That's the lowest monthly average for the global benchmark since early 2021. The annual average last year was just $69 a barrel, which is the lowest since 2020. EIA estimates global production outpaced consumption all year, prompting one of the biggest inventory build-ups in 25 years.

Commercial crude inventories dropped nearly two million barrels and are about three percent below the five-year seasonal average. The government adds another 200,000 barrels to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, which now tops 413 million barrels.

The Energy Information Administration reported a slight increase US crude production, which remains over 13.8 million barrels per day.&nbsp; The four-week average and cumulative output this year remain at record highs, with both about two percent higher than last year at this time.

Total statewide intent-to-drill notices drop by 500 for the year. The Kansas Corporation Commission reports 52 new intents in December, or 749 for the year. That's down from over 1,252 last year. Ellis County reports two new intent-to-drill notices, for a year-end total of 18. There are no new intents in Barton County, which winds up the year with 13. Russell County adds one; that's three for the year.&nbsp; Stafford County also adds one new intent notice in December, for a year-to-date total of 13. Finney County shows two new intents in December, 24 for the year. Gove County ends the year unchanged at 28 intents. Haskell County shows 14 for the year, which is also unchanged for December.

Crude imports from Canada drop to 3.1 million barrels a day, the lowest weekly tally since June. For the year, Canada crude imports have topped four million barrels a day eleven times, with the best weekly tally ever in the first week in January: 4.4 million barrels a day.&nbsp; Canadian crude imports came into the cross-hairs, and declined, early on in the Administration's tariff program.

US Crude exports this week drop to their lowest level in three months, 3.4 million barrels a day. That's still more than last year at this time, when exports averaged just over three million barrels a day.

The government announced details from the first of many new offshore lease auctions, under the Administration's expanded drilling proposals. To encourage participation, the government offered some 80 million acres at the lowest royalty rate since 2007, 12.5%.&nbsp; The government says they drew more than 200 bids from 30 companies for 15,000 previously-unreleased blocks. The blocks are situated in what are called the Western, Central and Eastern Gulf planning areas.

Baker Hughes reports 546 active drilling rigs nationwide as of December 30th. That final Rotary Rig Report of the year shows Texas down one rig, but holding firm with 231 active rigs, 42 percent of the national tally. New Mexico was steady with 101 rigs, Oklahoma and Louisiana each had 43, and North Dakota had 27.

Year-to-date oil-by-rail shipments surpassed half a million tanker carloads in the latest report from the Association of America Railroads. The last weekly tally of the year is just under 10,400 carloads. The average weekly tally this year is down nearly two percent from last year, and is also just under 10,400 carloads. News from the Oil Patch: Venezuela doesn't budge dire oil prices

Happy 2026! Rolling over the calendar is always exciting to me. I love a fresh, new year for new ideas, new planning, and new things to try. Do you make New Year’s Resolutions? I have planned resolutions as long as I can remember. Many people make commitments to be healthier, but then by February those commitments fall by the wayside when “life happens!” What are some things you can do to keep from losing your focus? Here are some tips:

1. Be Picky Choosing too many goals can be overwhelming which can cause us to throw our hands up and quit. Pick one to two things you’d like to focus on and go full in.

2. Plan What’s the old saying? “When you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” Research what you want to do, how long will it take, what support or information do you need to reach your goal?

3. Specific goals Write goals that are specific rather than vague. Something like “exercise more” or “eat more veggies” can be too vague to really measure, instead be more detailed. A more specific resolution would be, I will walk 20 minutes 3 times a week. An example of a specific nutrition goal would be “I will eat a serving of fruit with breakfast and a serving of vegetables with lunch and dinner.” Both of those are measurable goals you can check off your list and will give you a dopamine boost that will leave you feeling accomplished.

4. Choose Something New Don’t choose the same goal you have in the past and failed at. This sets you up for the same pitfalls that caused you to be derailed in the past. If you still want to work on the same goal as last year then re-word it, making it more specific.

5. Accountability Partners Lean on the people around you to help you stay focused. Whether its co-workers, spouses, or friends, we need those around us to support us and motivate us. Share your goals with those around you.

6. Time to Become a Habit It takes approximately 2 months to form a new habit. If life gets in the way, get back up, dust yourself off and start again. Resolutions don’t have to be all or nothing. Be forgiving to yourself. Life happens and one of the things we have to learn in order to accomplish hard things is the ability to do a little self-reflection about what went wrong and how do we fix it? You can also try tacking a new goal onto something you already&nbsp;do to help it become a habit. For example, during a morning or night routine try putting the new goal in during those already established routines.

The benefits to physical and mental health are numerous with even small amounts of activity. No matter how sedentary you have been, we have classes that will help you become more active. Stay Strong, Stay Healthy is an 8-week strength training class. Walk Kansas will begin in March for people to form teams and stay active. Walk with Ease, is an Arthritis Foundation program, and is aimed at helping people stay active with chronic disease. All the classes are laid back, easy to access, and you can start where you are at. Come join us, you will not be disappointed. These classes are well researched to provide numerous benefits.

 </figure>Happy 2026! Rolling over the calendar is always exciting to me. I love a fresh, new year for new ideas, new planning, and new things to try. Do you make New Year’s Resolutions? I have planned resolutions as long as I can remember. Many people make commitments to be healthier, but then by February those commitments fall by the wayside when “life happens!” What are some things you can do to keep from losing your focus? Here are some tips:1. Be Picky Choosing too many goals can be overwhelming which can cause us to throw our hands up and quit. Pick one to two things you’d like to focus on and go full in.2. Plan What’s the old saying? “When you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” Research what you want to do, how long will it take, what support or information do you need to reach your goal?3. Specific goals Write goals that are specific rather than vague. Something like “exercise more” or “eat more veggies” can be too vague to really measure, instead be more detailed. A more specific resolution would be, I will walk 20 minutes 3 times a week. An example of a specific nutrition goal would be “I will eat a serving of fruit with breakfast and a serving of vegetables with lunch and dinner.” Both of those are measurable goals you can check off your list and will give you a dopamine boost that will leave you feeling accomplished.4. Choose Something New Don’t choose the same goal you have in the past and failed at. This sets you up for the same pitfalls that caused you to be derailed in the past. If you still want to work on the same goal as last year then re-word it, making it more specific.5. Accountability Partners Lean on the people around you to help you stay focused. Whether its co-workers, spouses, or friends, we need those around us to support us and motivate us. Share your goals with those around you.6. Time to Become a Habit It takes approximately 2 months to form a new habit. If life gets in the way, get back up, dust yourself off and start again. Resolutions don’t have to be all or nothing. Be forgiving to yourself. Life happens and one of the things we have to learn in order to accomplish hard things is the ability to do a little self-reflection about what went wrong and how do we fix it? You can also try tacking a new goal onto something you already&nbsp;do to help it become a habit. For example, during a morning or night routine try putting the new goal in during those already established routines.The benefits to physical and mental health are numerous with even small amounts of activity. No matter how sedentary you have been, we have classes that will help you become more active. Stay Strong, Stay Healthy is an 8-week strength training class. Walk Kansas will begin in March for people to form teams and stay active. Walk with Ease, is an Arthritis Foundation program, and is aimed at helping people stay active with chronic disease. All the classes are laid back, easy to access, and you can start where you are at. Come join us, you will not be disappointed. These classes are well researched to provide numerous benefits.Life is a series of small experiments. What can you start doing (or stop doing) to make the biggest impact? Barton County Sheriff's Office Booking activity (1/5)

The start of the new year brings new leadership to the Great Bend City Council as it welcomed a new mayor for the first time in six years, along with three new council members at its inaugural 2026 meeting on Monday, Jan. 5.

"Welcome new mayor and city council members," said City Administrator Logan Burns. "Thank you for your call to public service. I'm excited for 2026 and what we're going to be able to do this year."

Alan Moeder was sworn in as the 38th Mayor of Great Bend and will serve a two-year term following Cody Schmidt’s six-year tenure. Moeder represented Ward One as a councilmember for the last six years before winning the mayoral election in November. A lifelong resident of Great Bend, Moeder is a self-made businessman, owning Moeder Plumbing, Heating, and Air for 43 years.

Also taking their oaths were council members Shelly Peacock, Jay Luerman, Shelly Arnberger and Rickee Maddox.

Peacock, another Great Bend native, will represent Ward One. Peacock has been on the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, as well as a small business owner in town. Most recently, she opened a romance centric bookstore, “The Velvet Bookmark,” with Chamber President Megan Barfield on Main Street.

Representing Ward Two is Jay Luerman who has lived in Great Bend since 2016. He is the Vice-President, Regional Manager and Commercial and Ag Loan Officer at the Bank of the Plains. An active member of the community, Luerman has been a part of eight local organizations and groups boards.

Shelly Arnberger, another long-term Great Bend resident, will take her seat in the third ward. Arnberger has worked as a tax-preparer for 25 years and has owned her own office for the last eight. Along with her husband, she has also owned a construction company for 21 years. Arnberger has been involved in various organizations and is the current chair for the Smoky Hills Television Board.

Incumbent Ward Four representative Rickee Maddox retook her oath as she secured another term in November’s election.

Remaining council members include Gary Parr (Ward One), Kevyn Soupiset (Ward Two), Davis Jiminez (Ward Three) and Tina Mingenback (Ward Four).

Outgoing Mayor Schmidt and council members Jolene Biggs and Cory Urban were also recognized for their years of service at Monday’s meeting.

"With the recognition of outgoing council members I want to extend a sincere thank you to Cory Urban, Cody Schmidt and Jolene Biggs for your years of public service," said Burns. "It's been a pleasure to serve with you, with you three for sure. I'm very grateful for everything you've done for me and the city."

City Council meetings are held the first and third Monday of each month beginning at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall (1209 Williams) and are open to the public.
