After a recent testing site closed in the community, there was still an obvious need for the service in the community and D&amp;A Testing Pros LLC aimed to meet that need. The new location at 1702 Main St., has parking availability to accommodate for small &amp; large vehicles. This location houses 3 different business entities including GTR Limousine &amp; Party Services, Kansas CPR Training, and D&amp;A Testing Pros.

D&amp;A Testing Pros LLC is a Drug &amp; Alcohol Screening Collection site offering both DOT/Non-DOT Drug &amp; alcohol screening services. They are able to do Urine, Breath Alcohol, and Hair Follicle testing at the current time with more lab-based testing for the future. They are open 8am to 3:30 pm Monday-Friday by appointment and walk-ins by availability. They also offer mobile on-site testing if needed and will be available for after-hours emergency situations. Their goal is to accurately test individuals whether current or future employees, DOT, or Non-DOT, and even Court ordered as quickly and efficiently as possible. Addition of other future services including Fingerprinting coming soon!

Great Bend Chamber coffee hour (9/15)

Wheatland Electric Cooperative, Inc. announced today that its Sharing Success Fund, managed by the Scott Community Foundation, has awarded a $1,000 grant to the Kansas Children’s Service League-Healthy Families.

Sharing Success grant funds will be used to support families and strengthen family self-sufficiency, increasing positive parenting skills and improving child health and well-being. Funds will help provide items such as air purifiers and filters, car seats, baby gates, portable cribs, and baby monitors. These safety supplies provide direct impact to a child's health and well-being by providing a child appropriate home environment. Evidence-based home visiting models such as Healthy Families have shown positive long-term impacts on children such as, increased school readiness, reduced child maltreatment, and reduced lifetime arrest and convictions.

Kansas Children's Service League (KCSL) - Healthy Families is a voluntary, child abuse prevention program that works to keep families together by teaching and modeling positive parenting and child development; as well as focusing on the health care needs of families. KCSL is the State Chapter for Healthy Families America (HFA). HFA is a nationally recognized evidenced-based home visiting program model designed to work with overburdened families who are at risk for Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES). Healthy Families services begin prenatally or right after birth of a baby and are offered voluntarily, intensively and over the long-term (3 to 5 years after the birth of the baby). They currently serve 53 individual cases.

The Scott Community Foundation began formally accepting applications for grants from the Wheatland Electric Sharing Success Fund from community-based organizations on December 1, 2012. Wheatland Electric and CoBank have each contributed $10,000 this again year to the fund. The program will continue to run until the funds are exhausted. Since 2012, the Sharing Success Fund has made $125,000 available to community-based organizations and projects across Wheatland’s service territory.

Barton Community College Director of Student Life Jonathan Dietz has
been involved with residential living at the college since 2013. At the college’s Board
of Trustees meeting Tuesday, he mentioned the highest residential hall
occupancy Barton recorded was the fall of 2019, when there was just over 400
students living in the dormitories. That was right before the COVID-19 pandemic. 
With only two reported positive cases of COVID-19 among students this fall
semester, occupancy numbers are starting to return normal. Dietz stated there
are 398 students living on campus in the dorms this semester. Of those 398, 83%
of them are associated with athletics. 
Dietz and the staff tries to make the students’ living experience as enjoyable as
possible. 
"We identified spaces around housing and campus to put picnic tables out," said Dietz. "We have a lot of really beautiful outdoor areas on campus, but it hasn't always been the most accessible. We immediately got compliments as the tables started going in that it was easier to hang out." 
Dietz noted in his presentation that students typically favor one dorm over the
others. The Cottonwood dorm building is usually the preferred choice. A few
students have addressed concerns paying the same amount for living in all the dorms, despite different amenities in the
older dorms. "Some of those units, you're sharing a bathroom between six and nine people," said Dietz. "At Sunflower, Cottonwood and Bluestem dorms, it's pretty much a standard two people to a room and share a bathroom with another two." 
Dietz said administration would look into price differences for the various
dorms. 
Barton has the capacity to house 431 students. Dietz mentioned the dorm capacity at the college when he started in 2013 was approximately 278. That number has climbed to 431, largely because of the increase in athletic teams.

A Colorado man and a woman were arrested Monday afternoon after leading a trooper on a chase from Hays to Russell with speeds that reached 130 miles per hour.

At 3:36 p.m. Monday, a trooper tried to stop a 2015 Kawasaki motorcycle driven by 31-year-old Anthony B. Casados of Parker, Colo., at mile marker 158 on Interstate 70 at Hays, said Trooper Tod Hileman of the Kansas Highway Patrol.

The motorcycle fled eastbound on the I-70 and exited the interstate at Russell at the U.S. 281 junction. The motorcycle ran out of gas about a mile south of Russell. 

The driver dropped the motorcycle and attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended a short time later, Hileman said.

Casados and his passenger, 42-year-old Megan C. Horstmann of Denver, were arrested on a requested charge of fleeing and alluding. Casados was also arrested on a requested charge of driving with a revoked driver's license.

Both suspects were booked into the Ellis County Jail.

year of sports and leisure activities, the GBRC board approved an action item
at Monday’s meeting to stay local with t-shirts. 
The Recreation Commission received three t-shirt bids for youth and adult
participants in their activities this year. One bid came from Hays, another
from Kingman and Identifications Co. from Great Bend. 
Rec Assistant Superintendent Chris Umphres said Identifications came in with the
low bid this year. "Redeem Designs is who we use currently," said Umphres. "Last year, Identifications did not bid. Factory 233 does our hats. We do use the others. We're not disappointed in them, but Identifications got back in the bidding process this year."

Everybody needs some vacation. Or at least a little field trip. Last Wednesday, the Barton County Commission got both on a brief excursion to some fields north of Heizer. The purpose was to view county roads, or the lack thereof, to determine if the roads could be vacated. The commission voted at this Wednesday's meeting to approve that vacation.

"In doing some research on the roads out that way, there were several road segments that have never actually been roads," said County Engineer Barry McManaman. "Northwest 60 Avenue was actually opened back in 1881 and was never constructed. The other ones were opened, I think in the 1940s, approximately. The commission held the road viewing and, all the roads out there, there's no evidence of any road ever being there."

The alleged roads in question are in Buffalo and Eureka Townships. Northwest 60 Avenue stops abruptly in a field, and Northwest 65 Avenue runs into Walnut Creek on its north and south boundaries. Therefore, Northwest 50 Road north of Heizer was never constructed.

"I think it's interesting people still knew there were supposed to be roads because there's no indication there are roads out there," said Commissioner Jennifer Schartz. "It must have just come down through families, that they always said there was supposed to be a road here."

Barton County Sheriff's Booking Activity (9/13)

We will never forget. For 21 years, that has been the mantra following the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Three hundred and forty-three New York firefighters died that day, and each year departments around the nation go above and beyond to remember their fallen brothers. Over the weekend, Great Bend firefighters participated in two memorial events locally and in Kansas City.

For a 10th-straight year, Great Bend Fire Chief Luke McCormick did his stairs in Kansas City at the Town Pavilion high rise. Registration for that event was capped at 343, with each climber honoring one of the fallen FDNY firefighters. The event is usually booked within minutes after online registration opens, and since 2011, has featured climbers from more than 80 fire departments in eight states.

"It's a great reflection on the events of 9/11," McCormick said. "Part of it is, my wife and kids to go the event with me as well. It keeps reminding them of the tragedy that happened that day, and it allows us to complete the mission those firefighters set out on. By climbing to the 110th floor, they weren't able to complete that mission. It allows us to carry on that memory of them. I think it's a great tribute to the fire service, the ceremonial part of the event.

"To see the brotherhood and camaraderie that comes together when you put that many firefighters in the stairwells as they're making the ascent up the plaza building. Some struggle and it takes the whole group and a team effort to get everybody through the completion of it."

For the first five years, McCormick climbed in honor of Jeffrey Palazzo, who was 33 at the time of his death in 2001. Palazzo, a husband and father of two daughters, loved hunting, fishing, boating, and scuba diving. He was an active member of the United States Coast Guard.

Over the last five years, McCormick has allowed the organization to choose his firefighter for the climb. This year it was Gerard Nevins, an 18-year veteran firefighter who was 46 at the time of his death. 

"Part of the reason I decided to start climbing for different firefighters is it gives me a chance to look up and see a little bit about them and what they meant to the department," McCormick said.

Nevins was a husband and father of two sons who lived on a farm outside New York City. Nevins was known for raising chickens, goats, rabbits, and pigs, and for keeping firehouse traditions alive, including the bond created by making meals together.

"I feel that same thing," said McCormick. "Our guys eat meals together here twice a day that they cook and prepare. That just really helps bring together the crews."

Other firefighters climb locally A group of firefighters stayed home to complete the Ultimate Fire Athlete 9/11 Tribute Challenge Workout. They climbed the equivalent of 110 flights of stairs at Great Bend High School's Memorial Stadium and did a handful of other exercises, all with extra meaning.

"We figured up how many times up and down it would take us to equal out the number of steps it would take to complete the challenge," said Christopher Kell, firefighter and AEMT. "Of course, there's the additional stuff in there such as the 100 pushups, 100 squats, 100 lunges, and 43 dips, which totaled out 343, which is the exact number of firefighters that died on 9/11."

Kell has been with the Great Bend Fire Department for two years and participated in his second challenge. He said it's important for the firefighters to honor the fallen.

"I know some of the older guys on the department that have been on for a while can remember sitting here at the station when all that happened," he said. "It always brings back the emotions they felt during that time."

Paramedic and firefighter Kaleb Karnosky is just 24 years old and has no memories of the tragic events from 21 years ago. But he was still able to suffer through a tough workout to honor the fallen firefighters. 

"You learn even more about (9/11) when you become a firefighter because it's an important part of firefighting history," Karnosky said. "It's extra motivation when you're doing those workouts. I like to think about how those guys who were working in New York that day as firefighters, when it got difficult they didn't have the option to quit. They had to keep going because they had a job to do."

By KIM BALDWIN McPherson County farmer and rancher Last spring my father-in-law purchased a handful of ewes to graze a pasture near his house. The pasture had not been grazed in a few years, and he liked the idea of having some animals on his farm after getting out of the cattle business about six years ago. He decided to purchase the ewes and make it a project with the grandkids.&nbsp; After the trailer of sheep arrived, each grandchild was allowed to pick out two ewes to claim as their own. Even before the sheep arrived, the kids helped their grandpa build the fencing and prepared the area for the animals. Since their arrival, the kids have attempted to help tame these ewes that were born and spent the early part of their lives in the Flint Hills. The grandkids have helped feed and vaccinate the ewes. Some days I’ve found one of the kids sitting on the fence talking to the ewes as they anxiously eat their grain before returning to the pasture. At the end of March, the kids watched as we turned out a ram with the flock. Soon blue chalk markings began appearing on the ewes.&nbsp; Fast forward to September where we are now on alert for lambs to begin arriving any day now. While the kids are simply excited to have some little lambs running around, my father-in-law is more focused on maintaining the health of the soon-to-arrive lambs and their mothers. I’m most concerned about how many lambs we could possibly bottle feed at once and being prepared with the supplies needed to ensure we can successfully feed multiple babies. It reminds me a lot of when I was pregnant with my two children and the different areas of concern people within my family focused on.&nbsp; While I know my concern is one that can easily be addressed with a quick trip to town, I still want to be ready for the scenario in which we have bottle babies. A handful of years ago my son was given a newborn calf whose mother had unexpectedly died on the coldest day of the year. My husband brought the tiny heifer home just a few hours after being born, and we quickly made adjustments to housing and bottle feeding the calf. In that scenario we weren’t even expecting a calf, but we were able to pivot quickly and begin caring for it.&nbsp; That calf is now Sunflower the cow, and she, too, is due to have her calf any day now. Although she is an experienced mama cow, my son and I are still on alert as we await her newest arrival. The anticipation of baby animals on the farm this fall is exciting, and to have my two children observe life through their animals is something I am so thankful to expose them to. As we patiently await and prepare for these new little additions on the farm, we have begun to embrace and understand the importance of the task of keeping watch.&nbsp;&nbsp;

🎤Focus on Hoisington show

The surveying work is getting underway this week for the south side of
Brit Spaugh Park, the early steps to make improvements and adding amenities to
the park. 
The surveying work is scheduled to be completed by Oct. 1. From
there, Great Bend Recreation Commission Executive Director Diann Henderson said
the rec will provide the survey to the City of Great Bend and the project’s
engineering partner to develop a design for the improvements. "Most of the discussion has encompassed the dimensions of all the play and active spaces," said Henderson. "They're getting ready to put that plan together. Hopefully, we'll have a glimpse of the plan in another couple of weeks." 
Henderson said the space is still planned for a youth mini soccer pitch,
pickleball courts, basketball court, restrooms and a playground area. 
The south side of the park, across the street from Park Elementary School,
currently has a small baseball field, horseshoe pits, parking lot and a spot
where an old BMX track used to be.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Brit Spaugh Park, the early steps to make improvements and adding amenities to
the park. 
The surveying work is scheduled to be completed by Oct. 1. From
there, Great Bend Recreation Commission Executive Director Diann Henderson said
the rec will provide the survey to the City of Great Bend and the project’s
engineering partner to develop a design for the improvements. "Most of the discussion has encompassed the dimensions of all the play and active spaces," said Henderson. "They're getting ready to put that plan together. Hopefully, we'll have a glimpse of the plan in another couple of weeks." 
Henderson said the space is still planned for a youth mini soccer pitch,
pickleball courts, basketball court, restrooms and a playground area. 
The south side of the park, across the street from Park Elementary School,
currently has a small baseball field, horseshoe pits, parking lot and a spot
where an old BMX track used to be.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

As the Alabama song goes, there are angels among us. For a Jefferson Elementary student, that angel was Shelby Kern, a teacher assistant at the school. Kern administered the Heimlich maneuver on that student in the first few weeks of school, and Monday night she was recognized by the USD 428 Board of Education with a ROSE Award. Great Bend High School Head Custodian Charlie Bentley and Custodian Linda Loera were also recognized.

"This award was created to identify and bring to attention some great things we have going on in our district," said Superintendent Khris Thexton.

The ROSE Award stands for Recognizing Outstanding Support of Education. For Kern, that meant being in the right place at the right time. She was visiting a classroom when she noticed a student having difficulty breathing. She performed the Heimlich, dislodging an obstruction in the student's airway.

"I was just doing my job," Kern said. "My natural instincts kicked in, and I was able to help out. We are just thankful that the student is alright." 

"Even though Charlie and Linda do a fantastic job, this one kind of really stepped out," Thexton said. "It's one of those shocking situations that pop up. You're just trained to do it, and you jump in and go after it."

Bentley and Loera were recognized for going above and beyond in July when the world-champion Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corp from Concord, Calif., used the Great Bend High School facilities for an overnight stay and practice. Bentley and Loera ensured the 19-time world champions and their 18-vehicle convoy were well taken care of during their brief stay in Great Bend.

"I did a lot of checking with Charlie before, and he was the one who made sure we had the rooms available we needed and made sure we had the air conditioning going," GBHS Assistant Band Director Don Regehr said at the time. "He had everything unlocked by the time I got there at 12:30 in the morning."

USD 428 board honors three employees with ROSE Award

The latest drought monitor has most of the western half of Ellis County listed as extreme drought the rest of the county is severe with the exception of the northeast corner as moderate drought. Most of Barton County is listed as moderate drought with the exception of the very northwest corner as severe.

With wheat planting approaching growers are probably weighing out more than one option. They can choose to “dust in” the wheat at the normal seeding depth and normal planting date, and hope for rain. Some farmers may consider planting it shallower than normal, but this could increase the potential for winterkill or freeze damage. Planting the wheat crop at the normal depth and hoping for rain is probably the best option where soils are very dry. The seed will remain viable in the soil until it gets enough moisture.

The long-term outlook by NOAA for a good bit of the western half of Kansas and all of the southern half to one-third of counties across the state, is that the drought is expected to persist through the end of November.

There are three basic options for planting winter wheat into dry soils:

1. Plant normally and hope for rain but due to the current moderate to extreme drought conditions. K-State Wheat specialist Romulo Lollato would advise growers to treat their fields as if they were planting later than the optimum time, as the emergence date will likely be delayed. Rather than cutting back on seeding rates and fertilizer to save money on a lost cause, producers should increase seeding rates, consider using a fungicide seed treatment, and consider using a starter phosphorus fertilizer to improve early season development. However, producers should be cautious with in-furrow nitrogen or potassium fertilizers as these are salts and can make it more difficult for the seed/seedling to absorb water needed for germination. The idea is to make sure the wheat gets off to a good start and will have enough heads to have good yield potential, assuming it will eventually rain and the crop will emerge late. Wheat that emerges in October may still hold full yield potential, but wheat that emerges in November almost always has fewer fall tillers and therefore can have decreased yield potential. Crusting and soil erosion are less likely in no-till situations than in conventionally tilled fields.

Another consideration is to delay the bulk of nitrogen application until topdress time in the spring, as wheat does not require much nitrogen in the fall. This would defer expenses until an acceptable wheat stand is assured.

CAMPBELL: Considerations when planting wheat into dry soil

Everyone knows how dry Kansas is in 2022. Unless you need to gather some volunteers for an outdoor paint project on a weekend. With expected rain last Saturday, Great Bend Economic Development and the Barton Arts Movement had to move its volunteer work day to Friday. Ultimately, approximately 30 volunteers helped Artist in Charge Melanie Ryan get the job done on the street mural in the alley between Forest Avenue and Lakin Avenue.

"I think everybody had a good time," Ryan said. "We had really wonderful people - young people that were very attentive and wanted to do a great job. It was really neat to see that we had such an array of ages."

The volunteers were originally going to work Saturday but instead showed up from 3-8 p.m. Friday. They worked on filling in the paint-by-number style in the alleyway that is part of the entertainment district in downtown Great Bend. Ryan had to prep the alley before the work began.

"We did lay down a primer that keeps any oil from coming back up," she said. "The primer was the first layer, and that's essential. Before the primer, I had to power wash. Then we laid down our color, exterior-grade, and then there's a top coat to help preserve and keep it from getting tire tracks."

Ryan has done several murals on walls in Great Bend. Friday's work was the first for a street mural. Working in an office nearby, she will now monitor the art for any small repairs it might need.&nbsp;

"I was just honored to be a part of it and to share the love of art," she said. "This is a new one for us, having something on a street versus a wall mural. There are challenges with just the overall - you want to be very aware that it's going to be very exposed to the elements."

The next Final Friday of Forest will be Sept. 30 from 5-9 p.m. The event will feature food, drinks, and music from the Kurt Allen Band.

Street mural completed ahead of next Final Friday event in GB

Another certified Great Bend Police officer is hitting the streets. Trae Wineinger graduated from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center last week in Hutchinson, and now resumes patrol with Field Training Officer Sgt. Joshua Suss. 

"We're very happy," said GBPD Chief Steve Haulmark. "We're currently fully staffed, and he's going to make a great addition to the team."

Wineinger spent a brief period on patrol before heading to the academy. He will now spend approximately 14 weeks with his field training officer. Wineinger worked as a safety and security officer at Larned State Hospital and in the Barton County jail prior to joining the Great Bend Police Department. He was one of 21 graduates from the 298th Basic Training Class at KLETC. The academy typically sees about 300 future law enforcement officers each year.

"Just in preparation of approving and working on our emergency procedure plan, we just decided to go ahead and funnel everybody through the main entrance so we have the ability to kind of watch the comings and goings," said USD 431 Superintendent Patrick Crowdis.

Earlier this month, the Hoisington School District posted on its website that, "On Monday we had an incident take place at the Activities Center where a male mistakenly walked into one of the girls locker rooms. USD 431 has investigated the issue and determined this was an accident and this has been confirmed through several reliable sources. USD 431 is continuing to take steps to mitigate the possibility of this happening again. We appreciate the assistance from several in the community in this matter and we hope you will spread this message as well."
