The surveying work is getting underway this week for the south side of Brit Spaugh Park, the early steps to make improvements and adding amenities to the park.

The surveying work is scheduled to be completed by Oct. 1. From there, Great Bend Recreation Commission Executive Director Diann Henderson said the rec will provide the survey to the City of Great Bend and the project’s engineering partner to develop a design for the improvements.

"Most of the discussion has encompassed the dimensions of all the play and active spaces," said Henderson. "They're getting ready to put that plan together. Hopefully, we'll have a glimpse of the plan in another couple of weeks."

Henderson said the space is still planned for a youth mini soccer pitch, pickleball courts, basketball court, restrooms and a playground area.

The south side of the park, across the street from Park Elementary School, currently has a small baseball field, horseshoe pits, parking lot and a spot where an old BMX track used to be.
