The drought monitor report as of Tuesday, October 4, indicates almost all of our area still in extreme drought.&nbsp; Exceptional drought is enveloping most of Southeast Kansas and moving into South Central Kansas along with a good portion of Southwest and moving in Northwest Kansas.&nbsp; The six to ten-day outlook (October 11 to 15) indicates near normal temperatures and 40 to 50% chance of above normal precipitation.&nbsp; Normal isn’t much but at least we should have seasonal temperatures.&nbsp; The eight to fourteen-day outlook (October 13 to 19) indicates continued near normal temperatures and precipitation.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Before discussing the 2023 wheat crop gamble, let’s take a peek at the long-range forecast.&nbsp; Through December the outlook is for a 40 50% chance of below normal precipitation and temperatures.&nbsp; We would normally expect around two to at most three inches of liquid precipitation from November 1 to December 31.&nbsp; Believe it or not the precipitation and temperature outlook have improved to equal chances of above or below.&nbsp; Better than the earlier forecast but remember liquid precipitation equivalent for those three months is only around four to five inches total.&nbsp; April through June have also improved to a 50/50 chance for both.&nbsp; So why review these facts?&nbsp;

First, wheat is being planted in our area and has been for a while.&nbsp; With the rains of the week before, it’s even coming up.&nbsp; The problem?&nbsp; We are in extreme drought conditions.&nbsp; Bluntly, the recent rain did provide for some topsoil moisture, likely enough to help wheat emerge unless the ground was tilled to death.&nbsp; However, for that wheat to establish a root system and tiller in addition to preparing for winter dormancy, it will have trouble making it through the winter.&nbsp; There simply isn’t mush if any subsoil soil moisture in most area soils to help.&nbsp; The exceptions are irrigated fields and fields that were fallowed.&nbsp; Other factors need to be considered here:&nbsp;

One last note that involves more than farmers.&nbsp; This impacts more than producers.&nbsp; It affects those providing ag services, elevators, and you the consumer.&nbsp; Here’s hoping the weather outlooks are wrong.&nbsp;

 <li>Dry soils cool faster and leave plants more susceptible to winterkill.&nbsp; Drier, stressed plants are also more susceptible.&nbsp; Compounding the risk is if the wheat doesn’t tiller out and establish decent crown growth, that further endangers the growing point.&nbsp;</li><li>Hopefully, wheat makes it through the winter, however, unless the moisture increases significantly, we will have fewer tillers and likely below average yields.&nbsp;</li><li>Input costs have come down a bit and wheat prices are decent.&nbsp; Producers can back off some costs like seed and fertilizer based on below average yields, especially preplant and starter fertilizer.&nbsp; They can always top dress nitrogen if conditions improve or back off in the spring if they don’t.&nbsp; And if conditions don’t improve, the price for wheat should increase for those with a crop.&nbsp; It’s probably not the best year to lock in prices.&nbsp;</li><li>One caveat for those planting wheat is to not apply any herbicide or do anything else that would prevent the field from being planted to a spring row crop if the wheat crop fails.&nbsp;</li>

bullying that was reported at Hoisington Middle School, a mother of a student
at Great Bend High School came forward and said, “there’s a lot going on, and
this is just the tip of the iceberg because so many parents have a story.”

The mother said her son, who is autistic and was in the special needs classroom
at Great Bend High School, went to the restroom where another student took a
video of her son with his pants down and posted the video on social media. "I don't think there should be cell phones in the school district at all. I think most teenagers don't have the mindset and the maturity level to have cell phones to be able to take pictures of others. It's a distraction. We send them to school to learn. We don't send them to take pictures and videos of other students to harass and bully." 
The incident occurred May 17, 2022 and the mother was told the student
that took the video was suspended for the rest of the school year. The young
man was given a diversion and returned to school this fall. 
The mother, not wanting her son to have to go to school with his “predator”
removed her child from Great Bend High School in September and now travels 25 miles to another
school with the special needs care needed for her son. 
"My son is defenseless. He's not going to defend himself. I didn't want the other student anywhere near my kid. School officials told me they 'kept their schedules and they should not be anywhere in the building at the same time. If they are, then your son can come back to the special education room.' I don't understand why my son had to cater to this other young man when my son did nothing wrong."

Son bullied, Great Bend mom wants cell phones removed from school

Persistent drought after harvest and delayed planting could indicate a lower risk of Wheat Streak Mosiac Virus this year. Still, experts caution producers to continue monitoring and managing volunteer wheat as they plant this fall.&nbsp;

“Right now, we’re thinking that there is a slightly lower risk of wheat streak heading into fall planting. This is largely due to extended drought that has limited the emergence of volunteer, especially out west,” said Kelsey Andersen Onofre, K-State wheat and forage extension specialist. “But the caveat is that there are other hosts for curl mites out there in the landscape. Those mites find a way and they can surprise us.”

In 2021, WSMV was the third most significant disease to strike the Kansas wheat crop loss, according to the Kansas Cooperative Plant Disease Survey Report released in December 2021. Statewide, the estimated yield loss was 3.1%, equivalent to 11.6 million bushels — well above the average for the last five, 10 and 20 years. According to the report, “This was the highest yield loss due to this disease since 2017, when there was an estimated 5.6% loss, and 2006 prior to that (7% loss).” Losses were reported in six of the nine crop reporting districts but had high variability from the eastern to western sides of the state, with the highest losses in the central corridor at 8.3%.&nbsp;

The spike in disease pressure resulted from heavy germination of volunteer wheat in late summer and early fall 2020. The report noted, “This would have created a ‘green bridge’ upon which the wheat curl mite (the vector that transmits the virus) was able to survive between 2020 harvest and 2021 planting. It would have then been able to wreak havoc on the planted winter wheat crop.”&nbsp;

This year’s harvest had the opposite weather — it has been, and continues to be, very dry. As a result, Andersen Onofre explained she’s received mixed reports from across the state — it was too dry for volunteer wheat to emerge in northwest Kansas, some volunteer wheat in western Kansas is being fenced off to graze cattle, and volunteer wheat is only starting to emerge in other areas as producers are starting to plant.&nbsp;

Does that mean producers are off the hook for WSMV this year? Andersen Onofre warns growers not to be complacent in controlling volunteer wheat. Even in areas that did not have volunteer wheat emerge immediately after harvest, several other grassy species can play host to the wheat curl mites — Bermuda grass, barnyard grass, green foxtail, downy brome, rye brome, just to name a few.&nbsp;

“Curl mites can survive in grasses in ditches and along waterways, so we can’t say for sure there’s no risk,” said Andersen Onofre. “But volunteer wheat is the highest risk reservoir. Usually when we see big outbreaks of wheat streak, there’s some volunteer wheat nearby.”

Andersen Onofre also cautioned producers grazing cattle on volunteer wheat or who have fields neighboring grazing pastures to balance short-term forage needs with potential long-term impacts on next year’s harvest. For these producers, her first suggestion is to make sure to destroy the remaining volunteer ahead of planting wheat or entering a fallow period.

“The full life cycle of the mite takes about 10 days,” said Andersen Onofre. “Generally, we say you need at least two weeks of no host within two miles of where you’re going to be planting fall wheat. This two-week break in host is necessary for the curl mites to die off.”&nbsp;

Another suggestion for high-risk fields is to plant WSMV-resistant varieties like KS Dallas or PlainsGold Guardian. Still, she reminded producers that these varieties only protect against one of the viruses that cause WSMV and may not provide protection against high plains virus or Triticum mosaic virus.&nbsp;Additionally, these varieties have a resistance gene that is temperature sensitive, and “turns off” at high temperatures.

“We don’t have perfect resistance, but we do have varieties that can do better and make yield even if they’re in one of those high-risk situations,” she said.&nbsp;

For producers who have only recently had volunteer show up in fields within the past couple of weeks, Andersen Onofre is less worried. If the “green bridge” was disrupted in the drought-stricken period after harvest, there might not be enough mites to cause a severe infection via this fresh flush of volunteer. Additionally, later planting dates in cooler weather are less favorable for infection as mite populations are less active and reproducing less aggressively.&nbsp;

“There are just fewer mites in the landscape, so the cooler it gets at planting, the better off we are,” Andersen Onofre said. “But that still doesn’t stop things. If you plant right into a field of volunteer or right next to an infested field, there’s still a risk.”

Managing for WSMV doesn’t stop at planting. Producers should monitor for WSMV throughout the growing season. Sometimes producers can see fall symptoms of WSMV if the weather stays warm, but typically symptoms won’t show until the green-up period next April or May. Symptomatic leaves will display dark green coloring and light-yellow discolorations. Infected fields often will not head out well or will have low grain fill. Symptoms typically are more severe on the edge of a field and fan inward, indicating the source of mites and direction of wind. Andersen Onofre reminded producers that K-State’s diagnostic lab can test for WSMV and other wheat viruses in the fall or spring to determine the presence of the virus.&nbsp;

“If you are suspicious of some wheat and you’re seeing symptoms in the fall or early in the spring, you can always send us a sample,” she said. “We can verify for sure if it’s WSMV or not.”

Whether or not the drought and late planting dates will break the “green bridge,” the impact of WSMV won’t be fully realized until next summer. But even if the indicators point to lower risk this growing season, the recommended strategies to combat this virus stay the same.&nbsp;

“There are some mixed signals, so stay vigilant,” said Andersen Onofre said. “The best thing we can do is to make those decisions before planting — control our volunteer wheat, watch our planting dates, and choose varieties that have some type of resistance. But none of those tools are perfect on their own; they all have some limitations.”

Wheat Scoop: Did the drought stop the streak of WSMV? 

As the calendar turns over to October it reminds me of Breast Cancer Awareness month and cooler weather! It is very likely that you or someone you know has been affected by breast cancer. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in the United States breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women after skin cancer. Cancer is also one of the leading causes of death in the United States, ranking second only after heart disease. One in every four deaths is due to cancer. While there are a lot of risks for cancer that are outside of our control, such as our genetics, gender, and age, there are many lifestyle choices we can make to reduce risk.

First, achieve and maintain a healthy weight. I know! Easier said than done. This is especially important as we get older. Two other choices that can help lower risk for breast cancer, as well as achieve a healthy weight, is to eat a diet rich in whole foods such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains and get plenty of exercise. Avoiding alcohol or consuming one drink or less per day will also lower your risk of breast cancer. Sometimes making healthy choices can seem overwhelming, especially when life gets stressful. Start small and build on what you are able to accomplish. Perhaps just pick one thing you would like to change and work on that for a few weeks or months.

While breast cancer risk increases as we age and those over age 50 are at increased risk, there are some things that younger women can do in addition to healthy lifestyle choices listed above. Having children and breastfeeding can help protect yourself from breast cancer. When women are pregnant and breastfeeding their hormone levels are different which can reduce risk of breast cancer later on in life. There is a dose response effect as well, the longer you breastfeed, the lower your risk of breast cancer. This may be a real motivation for some women to breastfeed their children or maybe the motivation to keep going when the baby wakes up again in the middle of the night. Remembering that there are benefits for you mom, may help you stay strong and not give up.

I know! Easier said than done. This is especially important as we get older. Two other choices that can help lower risk for breast cancer, as well as achieve a healthy weight, is to eat a diet rich in whole foods such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains and get plenty of exercise. Avoiding alcohol or consuming one drink or less per day will also lower your risk of breast cancer. Sometimes making healthy choices can seem overwhelming, especially when life gets stressful. Start small and build on what you are able to accomplish. Perhaps just pick one thing you would like to change and work on that for a few weeks or months.While breast cancer risk increases as we age and those over age 50 are at increased risk, there are some things that younger women can do in addition to healthy lifestyle choices listed above. Having children and breastfeeding can help protect yourself from breast cancer. When women are pregnant and breastfeeding their hormone levels are different which can reduce risk of breast cancer later on in life. There is a dose response effect as well, the longer you breastfeed, the lower your risk of breast cancer. This may be a real motivation for some women to breastfeed their children or maybe the motivation to keep going when the baby wakes up again in the middle of the night. Ernie Haase and Signature Sound will perform on the Golden Belt Community Concert stage for their third time in five years. Their lush four-part harmony and classy presentations prevail as one of the concert association’s most popular shows. This concert will be no exception.

The show is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, at the Great Bend Municipal Auditorium, Lakin and Stone. Grammy-nominated musician Ernie Haase founded Signature Sound in 2003 after his rich experience as a long-time member of the famous Cathedral Quartet. Haase has also sung with the Gaither Homecoming Tour.

This male quartet, recognized as one of the finest gospel quartets in the world, has branched out to perform secular music as well.

Their performance this season, promises to be a spectacular show with the band supporting the vocal group to include piano, drums, and bass, plus synthesizer, guitar, saxophone, and even more lighting and video screens than originally offered.

Presenting “Decades of Love,” highlighting favorite love songs through the decades from the Gershwins to Nat “King” Cole, the Beatles, James Taylor, Disney and John Legend, the group will once again leave audiences waiting for their next return with another brand new performance.

This GBCCA event is open to association members. No single concert tickets are available. Anyone who is not a member and wishes to purchase a season membership may do so at this concert. Doors will open 6:30 p.m.

Season memberships are $50 per adult; $10 for any full-time enrolled student; $110 for a Family Membership (two adults and all dependent children living in the same household); and $110 for a Grandparent Package (two adults and up to four minor grandchildren).

Because the concert association encourages music education in the schools, full-time students of any age will be admitted to the concert for a $5 donation at the door.

A harmful algal bloom (HAB) may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. Blooms can develop rapidly; if the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep dogs away. These toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and even skin contact. Symptoms vary depending upon the type of exposure (e.g. direct contact, ingestion, inhalation) but can include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, and headache. As part of a six-day, 27-stop, statewide bus tour, several Kansas
Republican Party candidates stopped in Great Bend Thursday evening as election
day is a month away. 

With a crowd of 40-50 people at Jack Kilby Square in
downtown Great Bend, U.S. Senator Dr. Roger Marshall introduced the Republican
candidates. Marshall wasted little time letting those gathered to know the
candidates’ view on Democratic President Joe Biden and Kansas Governor Laura
Kelly. "I'm just going to tell you, if you like Joe Biden you better just go ahead and leave because this is not going to be pretty," said Marshall. "We have two more years, whether you like it or not, we're stuck with Joe Biden. Kansas can not have a governor who races to be the first one to rubber stamp his policies."

Kansas Treasurer candidate Steven Johnson, Congressman Tracey Mann, Attorney General
candidate Kris Kobach and Governor candidate Derek Schmidt all spoke in Great
Bend Thursday. 
The politicians spoke in favor of locally-controlled education, law enforcement
support, banning transgender athletes in girls’ sports and inflation on
groceries and gasoline. 
Schmidt emphasized the bus tour’s headline of “Fire Kelly, Fire Pelosi” in
reference to removing Kelly from office and Speaker of the House of
Representatives Nancy Pelosi. 
"The reason this election is so important is not just that we want to win, it's not just that it's an us and them and a competition, it's that the Republican view of the world is what we so desperately need right now," said Schmidt. "Our value, our way of life and our pocketbooks are under attack. The way we make change is to change the folks who are in charge." 
Great Bend was one of five stops for the candidates on Thursday. The tour
concludes Monday, Oct. 10 in Wichita.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

On Thursday, Oct. 6, at about 3:15 p.m., Barton County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a reported multi-vehicle accident north of the Kansas Wetlands Education Center on K-156 Highway, northeast of Great Bend.

Upon arrival, officers located a four-vehicle collision which included a truck tractor/semi-trailer combination, as well as another vehicle that had rolled over.

Investigation at the scene indicates a 2014 Ford Focus operated by Daniel McHenry, age 32 of Kanopolis, was westbound on K-156 and crossed left of center for unknown reasons. The McHenry vehicle struck an eastbound tractor trailer unit operated by Sarah Carson, age 56 of Ensign, KS. The McHenry vehicle struck the 2003 Kenworth tractor in the tandem drive axles blowing out two tires. The Kenworth continued eastbound on K-156 stopping safely at a distance from the accident scene. The driver of the truck, Sarah Carson, was not injured.

The McHenry vehicle then spun out of control and continued westbound striking a 1992 GMC Suburban operated by Victor Swire, age 65 of Bushton. The Swire vehicle rolled one time coming to a rest in the eastbound ditch. Victor Swire, as well as a passenger identified as Jacqueline Swire, were both transported to The University of Kansas Health System - Great Bend Campus with non-life threatening injuries.

The McHenry vehicle then continued westbound striking a 2018 Chevrolet Traverse operated by Caitlin Radenberg, age 31 of Claflin. Radenberg, as well as a two-week-old infant that was also in her vehicle, were unharmed.

The McHenry vehicle continued into the eastbound ditch coming to rest on its wheels. McHenry was not injured.

The accident remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office. Their office was assisted at scene by the Great Bend Fire and EMS, Claflin Fire and EMS service, the Kansas Highway Patrol and the Kansas Department of Transportation. 

Traffic was restricted in the area for about two hours.

The Larned Police Department announced that Officer Jeremiah Slattery has successfully completed his law enforcement training with the 299th Basic Training Class at the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center on Sept. 30. Officer Slattery underwent 14 weeks of training at KLETC.

Officer Slattery is married with a child and has lived in the Larned community for more than 10 years. Officer Slattery will now undergo field training with various officers on the Larned Police Department before being assigned out on his own.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Larned police officer finishes training

GREAT BEND – A Great Bend man has been sentenced to more than 19 years in prison for the second-degree murder of his child in 2019, according to Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt.

Cody Lane Reed, 24, of Great Bend, was sentenced Wednesday in Barton County District Court by Judge Carey Hipp to 165 months on one count of second degree murder and 64 months for two counts of aggravated battery. The sentences are to be served consecutively in a Kansas Department of Corrections facility. Reed pleaded no contest to the charges in July 2022.

The case stems from the death of Reed’s 5-month-old child in January 2019. The case was investigated by the Great Bend Police and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. The case was prosecuted by Assistant Attorney General Nicole Southall of Schmidt’s office.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2022 Infiniti QX80 driven by Ernest D. Jezek, 64, Holyrood, was eastbound on Avenue Q, three miles north of Holyrood.&nbsp;

The driver failed to yield and&nbsp;struck the side of a northbound 2011 Ford F350 driven by Evan J Liebel, 26, Claflin, at the intersection of 5th&nbsp; Road.

EMS transported a passenger in the Infiniti Lisa A. Jezek, 64, Holyrood, to the Ellsworth County Medical Center. The drivers and a passenger in the pickup were not injured. Evan Liebel and Lisa Jezek were not wearing seat belts, according to the KHP.

The Cardinal athletes have outrun the turf and track and Elton Brown Field and Bill Kimble Track outside Hoisington High School. Sort of. The turf installed 13 years ago actually outlived its warranty by half a decade, but the facilities are in dire need of an upgrade. The USD 431 Board of Education took action at Monday's meeting, approving a $1.597 million replacement of both the turf and track.

Superintendent Patrick Crowdis reached out to five companies for the work, receiving updated bids from Wichita-based Hellas, Mammoth Sports Construction out of Lenexa, and Andover's ATG. The board had previously discussed a $2 million price tag for the renovations, and Crowdis said he was pleased with what ATG had to offer.

"As you can see, ATG came in considerably less," he said. "In my dealings and actions with the ATG representative, I felt as comfortable or more comfortable with the ATG rep as I did with any of the others for some varying reasons."

Crowdis provided numbers for financing the project using $160,000 left over from the original turf installation, and a $40,000 contribution from the Hoisington Rec Commission. The district currently levies six mills and, at five years, would pay $335,000 a year and have $102,000 left over. At seven mills, the payment would stay the same, and the district would have $174,950 left.

"I look at that, with the 5-year plan, knowing that would get us five years," Crowdis told the board. "We would have five years with the turf before the warranty is expired, allowing us to put money back every year for five years if we're potentially able to. That way we're able to, we would try not to finance it again."

Additional costs on the project could come for soil stabilization and disposal of the old turf and track. Board member Dean Stoskopf suggested using existing money from capital outlay and contingency funds to drop the outstanding balance to $1 million. Other board members agreed to take $200,000 from each the capital outlay and contingency funds. 

"We've got enough money sitting back there," Stoskopf said. "I'd like to do more but that soil stabilization, that $100,000 there, and both of them reference that you need a 5-10 percent contingency reserve for costs. I don't think it's going to get any cheaper."

The six-lane track surface installed by ATG will be thicker than that of its competitors. Construction will likely begin after the 2022-23 school year.

Beer & BBQ Sunday in Great Bend with United Way

As the weather starts to cool down there’s a whole host of critters out there looking for places that might better improve their chances of surviving the winter. These rascals have no qualms about trying to find food and shelter in your house, basement, attic, garage or any available out buildings that there might be. The thing to keep in mind is that you will not keep them all out no matter what you do. But there are a series of steps you can take to reduce the number that do get in!

The first and most important step is exclusion. Even new homes can have little gaps and cracks that invaders can, and will, come through. The older your home gets, the more of those opportunities there are! You can do a lot, to reduce this invasion, simply by going around with a caulking gun or an aerosol can of expanding foam. Check to make sure that doors and windows fit tight, that weather stripping doesn’t show gaps and that door sweeps on the bottom of doors seal tightly.

Wherever utilities or any pipe or wire enters the house, make sure that it is well sealed up. It doesn’t take much of an opening for some of these little insects to stroll in. Look closely from the outside and if possible even from the inside during the day. If you see daylight, figure out why! Older homes with rock or block foundations present a real challenge. Spend time with that caulking gun inside and out. If you can see any gap or crack, get it filled in! All of these efforts will also help to reduce cold windy drafts in the middle of winter!

Spend time in the attic as well. Several species of flies, those dreaded little Asian multi-colored lady beetles and other critters love to overwinter in our attics! Get up there during the day and look for any little glimmer of

daylight. Another trick for attics, crawl spaces, garages or any rooms that are occupied less than four hours per day by people are the No-Pest Strips. These strips are not the sticky fly paper but a thick plastic like strip in a cardboard container that gives off a low-level vapor that is very effective at controlling flying insects and some crawling insects. Hanging one in the attic can greatly reduce the number of flies that show up in the living quarters during the winter.

The next step that you can take, and will be more effective if you have gone through the effort to do all the sealing and caulking. Is to use an insecticide treatment around the exterior foundation. Just about any lawn and garden insecticide is labeled for foundation or nuisance insect treatments. Many products now come as a built-in hose end sprayer. There is no mixing required just hook up to your garden hose, turn on the water and spray. Spray up on the foundation a couple of feet and out away from the foundation a couple of feet. This will only need to be done once in a season. Insects trying to get into the house will pick up the insecticide and even if they do get inside the house, they will soon die.

The last step homeowners can take is to use an indoor insect spray. Most of these come as a ready to use product. Don’t go spraying these all over the house. Focus on baseboard areas, door thresholds and where utilities enter the house. Especially focus on porches and basement areas. In most situations these only need to be done once per season. Taking all of these steps will help reduce the number of fall invaders you see in your home!

🎤City Edition: Great Bend Fire Dept. staff

After taking some time off from the COVID-19 pandemic, the USD 428
Education Foundation Dinner &amp; Auction returns this year and is scheduled
for Nov. 10. 
This is the foundation’s only fundraiser each year, and all the money raised
goes to mini-grants for Great Bend teachers and school buildings. 
Foundation president Tina Mingenback said this year’s theme is “Wings on
Warriors.” "The theme represents the teachers and staff over the last couple of years dealing with COVID and doing online classes," said Mingenback. 
The evening starts at 6 p.m. with a social hour, dinner at 6:30 p.m. and the
live auction at 8 p.m. Along with a silent auction, the Great Bend High School
Madrigal Pop Singers will perform. 
To preview the event, the Education Foundation will host the Great Bend Chamber

Education Foundation Dinner &amp; Auction returns this year and is scheduled
for Nov. 10. 
This is the foundation’s only fundraiser each year, and all the money raised
goes to mini-grants for Great Bend teachers and school buildings. 
Foundation president Tina Mingenback said this year’s theme is “Wings on
Warriors.” "The theme represents the teachers and staff over the last couple of years dealing with COVID and doing online classes," said Mingenback. 
The evening starts at 6 p.m. with a social hour, dinner at 6:30 p.m. and the
live auction at 8 p.m. Along with a silent auction, the Great Bend High School
Madrigal Pop Singers will perform. 
To preview the event, the Education Foundation will host the Great Bend Chamber
of Commerce coffee hour on Oct. 20 at 9 a.m. at the District

USD 428 foundation dinner & auction returns in 2022

Students travel from all over the world to attend Barton Community College. Last Tuesday, sixth graders from St. Joseph Catholic School in Ellinwood were able to talk with them about their journey to the United States and learn about a variety of cultures when they visited an English as a Second Language (ESOL) class&nbsp;on the Barton campus.

Barton ESOL Instructor Abby Howe said hosting collaborative educational events is beneficial for the college as well as local communities.

“I find that activities like this increase participants’ sense of personal connection to the local and global communities,” she said. “The Barton students now have more personal connections to Ellinwood and Kansas, while the St. Joseph students have personal connections to the countries and cultures of the Barton students. This activity directly supports the part of Barton Community College’s mission that we offer exceptional learning opportunities to support community needs.”

ESOL student Aya Saiki said she enjoyed the experience. “I think it is necessary for young people to know about multinational people and cultures when they go out into society,” she said. “I think it's even better to experience different cultures at an early age. Since I came to America, I have only communicated with adults. This was the first time I communicated with an American child. He spoke very quickly! It was very difficult for me to understand how to respond, but it was a good learning experience for me.”

St. Joseph sixth grade Instructor Catherine Strecker said the social studies class did a lot of work to prepare for the visit such as researching information about various countries, creating brochures highlighting items like: population, size, language, food, weather, economy, development, tourism, religion, and government. Students presented their brochures in class and then developed questions to ask the ESOL students.

“Developing communication skills helps promote a better understanding of the similarities and differences of our world,” she said. “It also promotes friendship and understanding each other in a better way! Students engage in their multiple intelligences with various ways of learning.”
