Crude futures prices fall in seven consecutive trading sessions to two-month lows.&nbsp; NYMEX crude settles Thursday at $63.88 per barrel, down nearly half a dollar on the day and the first closing price below $64 since June 5. After some ups and downs the near-month contract ended the day on Friday unchanged at $63.88. a weekly loss of $3.45 per barrel.

Drooping prices in McPherson mirror those in London and New York. Kansas Common crude at CHS starts the week at $54.25 per barrel, after plummeting three dollars since the first of the month.

Kansas regulators okayed three new drilling permits in eastern Kansas and seven west of Wichita. That's 440 new drilling locations so far this year, compared to over 600 last year at this time.

Independent Oil and Gas Service reports new well-completions in Ellis, Stafford, and Finney County out of 11 in Western Kansas last week. Year-to-date, statewide, operators have completed 741 wells in Kansas compared to 791 a year ago.

The Kansas Rig Count from Independent Oil and Gas Service is up one rig west of Wichita at ten active rigs and unchanged in eastern Kansas, also with ten rigs. The statewide tally is up 67% from a month ago, but down 33% from a year ago. Operators are rigging up for a new spud in Stafford County. Drilling continued Friday on a lease in Ellis County and three in Gove County.

The Rotary Rig Count from Baker Hughes is down one rig at 539, dropping one gas rig but adding one oil rig. Oklahoma adds two active rigs, Texas is down two and New Mexico is down one.US crude production in May increased by 24-thousand barrels a day, topping 13.4 million daily barrels for a third consecutive month. The Energy Information Administration reports Kansas production of 69-thousand barrels a day. That's down two thousand barrels from April, and eight percent lower than in May of last year, but it matches the statewide average so far year. Output in Texas increased slightly to 5.7 million barrels a day, surpassing the next 12 states combined.

The US added 200,000 barrels to the Strategic Petroleum Reserves, where stockpiles now stand at 403 million barrels. Since refill operations resumed in April of last year, the Energy Department has added 38 million barrels at markdowns of $20 to $30 from the $95 a barrel we sold it for three years ago.

The government says commercial crude inventories dropped by three million barrels, and are about six percent below the five year seasonal average.US crude production drops for the fifth time in six weeks.&nbsp; The Energy Information Administration reports output last week dropped below 13.3 million barrels a day for only the second time this year. Cumulative output so far this year is up two percent from a year ago, and remains above 13.4 million barrels a day.

Despite a spike in crude exports, and declining imports, the US remains a net crude importer, with imports surpassing exports by 2.6 million barrels a day. Crude exports vaulted 620,000 daily barrels or 23% to 3.3 million barrels per day.&nbsp; Crude imports dropped by 174,000 barrels to six million barrels a day.

ConocoPhillips is selling assets in the Anadarko basin of Oklahoma for $1.3 BILLION. The deal is expected to close by the end of the year. The company announced increased production but lower earnings due to lower commodity prices. It's average realized price for crude oil during the first six months of the year was $45.77 per barrel, which is down 19 percent from a year earlier.&nbsp; Pumping nearly 2.4 million barrels of crude oil per day led to net earnings of two billion dollars.

Russia's crude-oil exports are dropping, but remain relatively high, and the government says their markets have shifted. With News from the Oil Patch...From 2020 to 2024, Russia oil exports averaged five million barrels a day. That's down to 4.3 million as of June. The Energy Information Administration says Europe got 51% of Russia’s exports in 2020. That's down to 11 percent today, with most of that going to Turkey. The decline in Europe was offset by increases in Asia and the Pacific Islands, rising from 41% of Russia's sales five years ago to 81% now. China and India imported nearly five million barrels a day in the last year and a half. Prompting the Administration to announce new tariffs against both.

How hot was it was it?&nbsp; Hot enough to set new records for electricity demand...twice.&nbsp; EIA reports record high demand for electricity on July 28 and then again the next day: 745,000 megawatts. Tax transparency is not cheap. In 2021, the Kansas Legislature passed revenue neutral laws that prompted notification to taxpayers of any taxing entity that planned to collect more in property taxes in the previous year. Barton County residents began seeing those notices in their mailboxes late last week.

For the upcoming 2026 year, the Barton County Clerk's office mailed out more than 19,000 pieces of mail pertaining to revenue neutral rates at a cost of $17,212. For some counties, like Sedgwick, the costs easily exceed $100,000. While the state reimburses counties for the costs, taxpayer dollars are still used to mail the notices. County clerks receive taxable information from all taxing entities in their county and submit that information to the state  but otherwise have no responsibility on tax matters.

For a fifth consecutive year, Barton County as a taxing entity remains revenue neutral. That means all county office budgets will not require more property tax money than in the previous year.

Revenue-neutral notices received in the mail are not a guarantee of increased property taxes, but are merely an estimate of taxes bases on last year's mill levy and overall property valuations. The intent of the notices is to inform taxpayers of upcoming budget meetings for those taxing entities that are planning to collect more property tax dollars for their 2026 budgets versus what they collected for their 2025 budgets.

Preliminary data released last September at the National Safety Council (NSC) Safety Conference and Expo in Orlando, Fla., revealed the lineup of the usual suspects in workplace safety violations, as ranked by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

“These come as no surprise,” said Bree Husted, Fuller Industries Inc.’s environmental, health and safety assistant. “These show up on the list every year and that is why we drill on safety regularly.”

Fall protection remained the most frequently cited standard by the OSHA for the 14th consecutive year. The annual list of top 10 violations shows little change from previous years, signaling ongoing opportunities for workplace safety improvements.

The consistent nature of the top 10 list underscores the importance of addressing all fundamental safety hazards at the longtime Great Bend, Kan.-based commercial cleaning maker, Husted said. “We continue to implement the necessary efforts to reduce these common violations to prevent fines for sure, but more importantly to protect our employees and keep them out of harm’s way.”

The preliminary OSHA top 10 most frequently cited standards for fiscal year 2024 are:

1. Fall protection – general requirements (6,307 violations) Precautions against falls are critical, even at heights as low as four feet, she said. Fuller selects proper fall protection for each employee and regularly inspects all equipment. Guardrail systems, safety net systems, and personal fall arrest systems offer vital protection.

2. Hazard communication (2,888 violations) Workplaces must warn all personnel, including employees, contractors, temporary staff, and visitors, about hazardous chemicals, Husted said. Fuller continues to update and implement and maintain written hazard communication programs&nbsp; detailing how they manage warning labels, safety data sheets (SDSs), employee training, and other OSHA requirements.

3. Ladders (2,573 violations): Safe ladder use is paramount, she said. A frequently violated OSHA requirement mandates that ladders not extending at least three feet above an upper landing surface must be secured to a rigid support and equipped with a grab rail or other grasping device.

4. Respiratory protection (2,470 violations): Respiratory protection programs serve as a crucial defense against hazardous airborne contaminants. Fuller provides medical evaluations to determine employees' ability to use respirators and ensure fit-testing before initial use, when switching brands or models, and at least annually thereafter.

5. Lockout/tagout (2,443 violations): Husted said employees servicing or maintaining machinery face serious harm if hazardous energy is not properly controlled. Documented procedures to shut down, isolate, block, and secure machines, along with specific steps for placing, removing, and transferring lockout/tagout devices, are essential.

6. Powered industrial trucks (2,248 violations): Workers operating or near forklifts and other industrial vehicles are exposed to significant hazards. Safe operation is critical, so Fuller continually certifies operators and makes sure they have the needed training and are evaluated per OSHA requirements. Certified operators need refresher training and evaluation at least once a year.

7. Fall protection – training requirements (2,050 violations): “When employees may be exposed to fall hazards, it is vital to train them to recognize these hazards and follow procedures to minimize them,” Husted said. Fuller maintains written certification records including employee names, training dates, and signatures of trainers or employers.

8. Scaffolding (1,873 violations): Scaffolding must be designed, constructed, maintained, inspected, and used in compliance with OSHA regulations. Workers on scaffolding must be protected from falling to lower levels, often requiring guardrail systems and, for some types, personal fall arrest systems.

9. Personal protective and lifesaving equipment – eye and face protection (1,814 violations): “Anyone on Fuller’s production floor, whether or not they are operating machinery, must wear safety glasses,” Husted said, noting the importance the company places on this. OSHA mandates eye and face protection when employees are exposed to hazards such as flying particles, molten metal, liquid chemicals, acids or caustic liquids, chemical gases or vapors, and light radiation.

10. Machine guarding (1,541 violations): Employees operating or working near certain machinery require protection from associated hazards, she said. So, close attention is paid to machines with rotating or reciprocating motions, pinch or shear points, and those that generate chips, debris,&nbsp; splashes, sparks, or sprays.

Fuller: Great Bend manufacturer takes every chance to focus on safety

BARTON COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a woman for an alleged violent crime.

Just before 3:30p.m. August 6, police&nbsp;were dispatched to the 2900 block of Gano Street in Great in reference to a subject who had been shot in the face with a pellet gun, according to a media release.

Officers located an 80-year-old man&nbsp; with injuries to his face. He was later transported to the hospital in Great Bend for treatment of his injuries. 

Officers and Detectives began interviewing subjects on scene.&nbsp; Officers arrested 46-year-old Janie Strange at the scene on requested charges of Aggravated Battery, and transported her the Barton County Jail.

The five Barton County Youth Crew members who recently attended a specialized training event are sharing their new insights with their peers, local officials and the broader community.

The group, along with two adults, traveled to Nashville for the July 20-24 mid-year meeting of CADCA, which stands for Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America.

One participant, Mya Brewer, Hoisington Middle School eighth grader, “learned how to ask for sponsorships and plan events. We also discussed how to launch a social-media campaign to raise awareness about suicide prevention.”

Sophomore Brooklyn Cooley and Freshman Branson Holinde, both of Great Bend High School, also noted they were excited to learn about seeking sponsorships, as well as “discovering how to outline the different roles of those who are planning an event.”

Janey Weber, eighth grader at Great Bend Middle School, said “I learned about the seven C’s of leadership and why each of those is important.” She was referring to character, competence, commitment, connection, communication, courage and compassion.

In addition to sharing their new information, the Youth Crew members are expected to use it for projects in their schools and community.

Tyler Morton, Juvenile Services prevention advocate, said this CADCA meeting is the “best source of training for our youth. It offers professional trainers and attracts youth programs from around the world. In addition, CADCA accepts our feedback on how to make the event even better.

“This year, there were a lot more peer-led initiatives, allowing attendees to be more engaged than in other years,” he added. “This gathering also helps us recognize youth who excel in their efforts to build up local prevention efforts.

“We also want our youth to understand we are always moving the needle and trying to get better in our community work. Attending CADCA and engaging in continuing education are major pieces of growing as a coalition and task force.”

Morton noted it was gratifying that some CADCA trainers and executives remembered local Youth Crew members from years past.

“They called some by name, which speaks volumes about the young people’s work ethic and ability to engage with others. I also was impressed by newer members who took detailed notes. It was a lot to take in. All five participants did an excellent job and presented themselves well to their peers and CADCA officials.”

A Drug-Free Communities grant financed the trip. Morton and Nichelle Holinde, a parent, accompanied the group.

Kansas Wildlife and Parks Commission to Meet Aug. 14 in Garden City

Once a Panther, always a Panther. Brant Daughty graduated from Perry High School in central Georgia in 2017. Nearly 1,200 miles later, he's the new sports director for Eagle Media and the program director for 1590 KVGB/95.5 FM. Along with some play-by-play duties for the upcoming high school sports season, Daughtry will replace Steve Webster as host of KVGB's Sports Day program.

"What Webby has done for the past several years has been really successful, and I don't want to mess with a really good thing," Daughtry said. "We're going to bring in some stuff that's a little more nationally focused, but at the same time, we understand the focus is hyper-local, and that's how we're going to stay."

After graduating from Perry High School, with an enrollment of nearly 1,600 students, Daughtry attended Middle Georgia State in Macon, Ga. until his graduation in 2021. 

"The whole time, I was doing high school sports, calling football, basketball, baseball, softball, and pretty much anything they'd let me call with a local company called the Middle Georgia Sports Network."

After earning his degree, Daughtry moved deeper into SEC country to earn a master's degree at Auburn University in Alabama. He remained on the airwaves calling high school sports, and also co-hosted an award-winning, three-hour daily call-in show that focused on Auburn athletics.

"I'm looking forward to taking a lot of what I learned on that show to become the main host of Sports Day," he said. "I think that's going to help me a lot. I have a lot of experience in co-hosting and I'm looking forward to becoming the main host of a beloved show around here."

Sports Day will remain locally focused with weekly appearances from various Great Bend High School and Barton Community College coaches and athletes. Daughtry also wants to emphasize area programs with weekly appearances from other area coaches and athletes, and beyond.

"I want to go out and talk about the Chiefs and Royals, K-State and KU," he said. "They're super-exciting programs for a number of reasons. I feel like people around here would be really interested in hearing thoughts on that."

Along with his duties at the station, Daughtry will replace Cole Reif as "Voice of the Hoisington Cardinals" during the football season and "Voice of the Cougars" during the basketball season. He also plans to cover various area teams during the spring.

Sports Day airs daily, Monday through Friday, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on 1590 KVGB/95.5 FM. The show also streams live on the Eagle Communications YouTube channel.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2000 Toyota Tacoma driven by Paul P. Garcia, Coats, was northbound on Southwest 50th Avenue just south of Southwest 10th Street.&nbsp;

American Red Cross: Keep kids safe as they head back to school

SEDGWICK COUNTY—Two juveniles were injured and three others are in custody after a shooting on Friday at a mall in Wichita.

&nbsp;Just after&nbsp;3:36 p.m. on Friday, police were dispatched to a reported shooting in the Town East Mall parking lot, near Round 1 Bowling, according to a media release.

Investigators discovered that a fight involving five males escalated into gunfire. Two victims were injured: one was shot in the torso and the other in the leg. Officers applied a tourniquet to the leg injury before Sedgwick County EMS arrived.

An off-duty officer from the Great Bend Police Department, who was in plain clothes, detained one suspect just as Wichita officers arrived. This suspect was found to be in possession of what appeared to be a rifle-caliber pistol. Officers subsequently took two additional males into custody.

The two victims, aged 17 and 15, were transported to a nearby hospital, where they were listed in critical condition on Saturday morning, according to police.

 The victims were on the ground when the primary suspect continued to shoot at them. The primary suspect, age 17, has been arrested for two counts of attempted murder. The two other suspects, both 16 years old, will be booked with disorderly conduct related to fighting.

Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan highlighted the dangers of youth access to high-powered weapons, stating, “Once again, we have an incident involving teenagers with a high-powered weapon that resulted in two young people being hospitalized.  </figure>SEDGWICK COUNTY—Two juveniles were injured and three others are in custody after a shooting on Friday at a mall in Wichita.&nbsp;Just after&nbsp;3:36 p.m. on Friday, police were dispatched to a reported shooting in the Town East Mall parking lot, near Round 1 Bowling, according to a media release.Investigators discovered that a fight involving five males escalated into gunfire. Two victims were injured: one was shot in the torso and the other in the leg. Officers applied a tourniquet to the leg injury before Sedgwick County EMS arrived.An off-duty officer from the Great Bend Police Department, who was in plain clothes, detained one suspect just as Wichita officers arrived. This suspect was found to be in possession of what appeared to be a rifle-caliber pistol. Officers subsequently took two additional males into custody.The two victims, aged 17 and 15, were transported to a nearby hospital, where they were listed in critical condition on Saturday morning, according to police. The victims were on the ground when the primary suspect continued to shoot at them. The primary suspect, age 17, has been arrested for two counts of attempted murder. The two other suspects, both 16 years old, will be booked with disorderly conduct related to fighting.Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan highlighted the dangers of youth access to high-powered weapons, stating, “Once again, we have an incident involving teenagers with a high-powered weapon that resulted in two young people being hospitalized. Stueder Contractors announces promotion of Steve Spain to parts manager

Christina Hayes left some big shoes to fill in February when she announced her departure as community coordinator and director of the Convention and Visitors Bureau in Great Bend. Her role is now being filled by new CVB Director Amanda Gaddis and Addison Crites, who is taking on a newly minted position as Great Bend's public relations director.

"I think Amanda and I are still trying to figure out what that will look between the two of us," Crites said. "Christina was very talented. That was definitely her thing. Amanda and I have different skill sets, but we're definitely going to do what we can to help provide events around the city because we know people enjoy them. People enjoy the tradition."

Crites was a multi-sport standout athlete at Central Plains High School in Claflin. After graduation, she played for the Barton Community College basketball and volleyball teams before continuing her education at the University of Kansas. Last December, she graduated with a degree in journalism and mass communication and a minor in sports management. She got her start in media while in high school.

"I loved going to football games and cheering on my friends, but I also loved being down on the sidelines and taking photos," she said. "We would even help write some recaps for the Ellsworth Reporter at times. That was my introduction into media was doing yearbook.

"The benefit of going to a small school with that is I had to be the page designer. I had to be the editor. I had to take the photos. In bigger schools, they might have someone who is strictly doing the design, the photos, or the writing. Those skills helped."

Crites had options upon graduating from KU, but the biggest choice was continuing her education or beginning a career.

"I kind of always wanted to get a little bit closer to home," she said. "My family is here. My brother is still in high school. I loved my time in Lawrence. It was super fun, but being three hours away, I was hoping to get a little bit closer."

One of Crites' early roles is rebranding the city of Great Bend's social media pages and website. The city previously used a Great Bend City Council Facebook page. That has been changed to a more generic city of Great Bend page. The goal is to streamline information into fewer locations and provide that information in a user-friendly, American Disabilities Act-compliant format.

Crites said the digital reboot should take approximately six to eight months. After that, she plans to work more with Gaddis to provide information and entertainment to the citizens of Great Bend.

Hutchinson Community College (HutchCC) and Barton Community College have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) establishing a new partnership aimed at expanding access to respiratory care education and addressing a growing workforce need in central Kansas.

Through this agreement, students from Barton will complete their general education requirements at Barton and then have the opportunity to transition into HutchCC’s Respiratory Care Program. The partnership was developed in response to an increased demand for respiratory care professionals in Barton’s service area, which includes nine regional hospitals."

This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to meeting the healthcare workforce needs of our communities," said Dr. Tricia Paramore, President of Hutchinson Community College. "By working together, we are creating clearer pathways for students and helping ensure that Kansas hospitals have access to the skilled respiratory therapists they urgently need."
