The latest round of Barton Community College graduates is set to cross the stage at the school’s 56th Commencement this Friday at 7 p.m. inside the Barton Gymnasium. While graduations are steeped in tradition, this year’s ceremony will include a change as a ticket is required to attend the event in person. Barton’s Chief Communications Officer Amanda Staab said the need for tickets came from an increase in student guests who want to celebrate with their student, along with capacity limitations. Students were notified about the process twice, and the change has been broadcast on Barton’s social media.

“Each graduate participating in commencement received four free tickets when they picked up their cap and gown,” Staab said. “Students were told that any remaining tickets left after May 1 would be made available on a first-come, first-served basis.”

To help alleviate capacity concerns, and to make the event viewable for those unable to attend in person, Friday’s ceremony will also be livestreamed. Guests without tickets can still attend in person.

“We absolutely understand how important this moment is for students and their loved ones, and we truly want as many family members and friends as possible to still be part of the celebration,” Staab said. “Guests without tickets are welcome to watch the ceremony live in the Kirkman Practice Facility right next to the gym, where there will be overflow seating and a large screen showing the ceremony. Friends and family will also be able to celebrate with their graduate immediately afterward and take photos together nearby.”

Friday’s Commencement will include comments from Barton President Dr. Marcus Garstecki, and presentations from Vice President of Student Services Angie Maddy and Vice President of Instruction Elaine Simmons. Reverend Adam Wutka will lead the invocation.
