The Barton County Commission decided Wednesday to table the discussion
of allowing the Kansas Parole office to occupy a county office building rent
free. 
Barton County Operations Director Matt Patzner said an agreement with the state
was established years ago to allow the State of Kansas Parole office to be
housed at 1208 Kansas Avenue in Great Bend. 
A couple of the commissioners were unaware the parole office existed in the
building that also houses the 20th Judicial District’s community
corrections department and juvenile services. 
County Counselor Patrick Hoffman said the county has no control over the state
agency’s operations. "They deal with people that are under state crimes and have been in the penitentiary and are out in the community afterwards," said Hoffman. "They fall under a different jurisdiction of supervision then JJA (Juvenile Justice Authority) and community corrections. They're state employees." 
Kansas Parole does reimburse Barton County for a portion of the building’s
utility costs. The proposed agreement with Kansas Parole is set to expire
Dec. 31. 
Wanting to get more information on how much space the agency occupies, how many
employees work there and if other counties offer rent-free space to state
agencies, the commission agreed to table the discussion until the next week’s
meeting.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

"I'm in favor of looking into this a little more because we have a lot of projects coming up where we need as much space as we can get," said Commission Chair Shawn Hutchinson. "I think it's important enough to look into."

COUNTY ENGINEER:  Off-System Bridge 297 Deck Replacement:  -Matt Patzner, Operations Director, will present details.  Bids were opened on November 14, 2022, for the replacement of the failing bridge deck on Off-System Bridge 297.  The bridge is located on NE 70 Road, west of NE 150 Avenue and crossing Cow Creek.  Two bids were received, with L&amp;M Contractors, Inc. of Great Bend having the low bid of $168,697.50.  The bid was awarded. 

 TWENTIETH JUDICIAL DISTRICT:  District Coroner – Appointment:  -Mr. Patzner will provide details.  In accordance with the Kansas Statutes Annotated, Chapter 22a, the Board of County Commissioners of the County with the largest population in a Judicial District is to appoint a District Coroner to serve a four-year term.   Dr. Patrick Stiles was appointed to the 2023 – 2026 term. 

 OCCUPANCY AGREEMENT:  12th and Kansas, Great Bend:  -Mr. Patzner will provide details.  As a means of community support, the State of Kansas Parole office is housed in the County office building at 1208 Kansas, Great Bend. Barton County Sheriff's Booking Activity (11/29)

Along with a free zoo that features grizzly bears, lions, alligators,
cougars and so many more animals, Great Bend Brit Spaugh Zoo also provides a raptor
rehabilitation program for injured birds. The zoo staff nurses anywhere between
40-70 birds of prey each year. 
Before staff releases the birds back into the wild, they have to test the birds’
flight. Zoo Curator Ashley Burdick said the current situation is less than
ideal. 
"Right now we have smaller enclosures that we kind of test their flight or we do creance flying," said Burdick. "You essentially put anklets on the birds and almost fly them like a kite. It works okay but you have to make sure there are no trees and nothing they could get caught in. Every once in a while, other birds start to dive bomb because they don't want birds of prey in the area."

The Great Bend zoo used to have a “flight cage” for the rehabilitation program
located at the Larned Correctional Mental Health Facility. Driving nearly 30
miles to Larned wasn’t practical so the zoo, along with the Great Bend
Zoological Society, is hoping to construct a big enough cage on zoo grounds or
somewhere else on city property. 

Burdick estimated the flight cage should be
100 feet long by 30 feet wide and could cost upwards of $40,000. 
"We're hoping to get funding for this project mostly from the Zoological Society," said Burdick.&nbsp; 
A flight cage can house a bird as long as needed to build up their flight
muscles, as they are able to fly more than a session with a zookeeper.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

By GLENN BRUNKOW Pottawatomie County farmer and rancher The annual meeting of Kansas Farm Bureau is in Manhattan is coming the first weekend of December. I truly look forward to this meeting every year, and this one is no different. However, this year’s meeting will be a bit bittersweet as KFB’s President Rich Felts will ride off into the sunset and retirement. Our members will have the tough job of electing his replacement. President Felts has guided Kansas Farm Bureau for the past eight years with steady hand, a calm demeanor and an artful grace that has led to our organization reaching new heights. I have had the honor and privilege to a front-row seat at the board table. I consider Rich a friend and, more importantly, a mentor. I have watched as he has provided leadership and guidance on issues and made decisions that will affect our organization, our state and all of agriculture for years to come. I believe President Felts has left Kansas Farm Bureau in the best position we have ever been in and laid a foundation to ensure success in the future. Personally, I have been able to seek Rich’s wisdom and opinion on many things, and he has always been gracious and thoughtful. I have always taken heed of his advice, and I hope I can offer others the same leadership and experience. I am not sure I have ever been around someone as caring, dedicated, gracious or as empathetic as President Felts. He is truly the living example of servant leadership; I wish there were more leaders like him. You will never find anyone who cares more for Kansas Farm Bureau or agriculture. I wish everyone could know the hours and miles Rich has put into representing Kansas Farm Bureau. He has been the face of the organization; one we were proud to have representing farmers and ranchers. I doubt there is anyone who came in contact with Rich who was not better because of it. While I understand his decision to step down and spend more time with his wife, Shirley, and the rest of their family, I hope Rich knows how much all of us will miss him both as the head of Kansas Farm Bureau and as a person. I also know he will still be around and always just a phone call away, which is reassuring. I will also miss Shirley equally as much. If a greeting from Shirley can’t brighten your day, you are in bad shape. Her joy and happiness are always contagious. President Felts will leave a tremendous legacy in the organization and in its future. Generations will be able to make better decisions and advocate for our way of life because of his leadership and for that we will be forever grateful. I know this is not goodbye and we will still see each other, but not nearly enough. I also know that Rich will probably not be comfortable with all of this attention, and that is part of what makes him a truly amazing individual. Rich and Shirley, I hope you enjoy your well-deserved rest but please also know how much we all appreciate your dedication and sacrifice in the name of Kansas Farm Bureau and agriculture in general. We are all better for knowing you.

Holiday events at the Great Bend Public Library

With the beginning of Advent, Holy Family School will be performing their annual Christmas Musical and programs under the direction of Mrs. Ashlee Meyerhoff.

On Dec. 13, grades 5th and 6th will perform their popular musical at 7 p.m. in the Barton Community College auditorium. 

The musical is entitled “Santa’s Holiday Hoedown,” and we will see that Santa’s toyshop is in danger of going bust. No money for materials means no presents, which could mean no Christmas. Join us as the entire toyshop crew goes on the road to Branson, Missouri to raise the needed funds with a down-home country music jamboree. 

The Hoedown features Santa (Finn Anderson), Mrs. Klaus (Catalina Schenek), Tex Glitter (Julian Hernandez), Roadie Valet (Adaeze Nwachukwu-Udaku), Dolly Holiday (Jaya Stroup), Yoakam (Luke Beck), and Dwight (Kellan Chansler) and a supporting cast of elves and reindeer!

On Dec. 6, grades K-4 will perform their “Country Christmas” program at 7 p.m. in the Parish Center.

On Dec. 14, the Preschool under the direction of their teacher, Mrs. Inga Atkinson, will be performing “The Story of Christmas” at 10 a.m. in the Parish Center. Rumor has it there will be a special guest appearing. 

Mark your calendars to join the students of Holy Family as they bring the Christmas spirit to your hearts.

Holy Family School presents 'Santa’s Holiday Hoedown'

On Monday, Nov. 28, at about 2:30 p.m., the Barton County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a reported burglary in progress approximately three miles east of Great Bend on East Barton County Road. 

Deputies were advised the property owner was holding a suspect at gunpoint. 

Upon arrival at the location, the deputies took the suspect into custody at an unoccupied farmstead. The suspect had been removing items from the house and outbuildings. 

Arrested at the scene was Harry Casper, age 64 of Dundee. Casper was transported to the Barton County Jail without incident where he was booked on burglary charges.

Too often the busy-ness of the holiday season can cause stress and tension.&nbsp; It is important to stay focused on healthy habits to help manage the stress.&nbsp; Learn some healthy holiday hints to help you through the holidays.&nbsp; Donna Krug and Monique Koerner, Cottonwood Extension FCS Agents, will be the speakers for the program.&nbsp;&nbsp;

GBRC: Stop 'N Learn - Healthy Holiday Hints

The Kansas Forest Service Conservation Tree and Shrub spring distribution ordering process will start December 1, 2022 and goes through May 1, 2023. Order early to get the items you want! Spring order shipments begin in mid-March (weather permitting) and end May 1.

The spring distribution offers both bare root and container-grown seedlings for sale, as well as other items for use in conservation planting.

“Large conservation plantings can become very costly when several hundreds or thousands of plants are needed to meet the conservation goals of the landowner,” said Aaron Yoder, conservation trees specialist.

The Kansas Forest Service offers low-cost tree and shrub seedlings for conservation plantings. These plants are 1 to 2 years old and vary from 8 to 36 inches tall, depending on species. Seedlings are sold in units of 25. Bundles and other items must be ordered in whole units. Orders for partial or mixed units will not be accepted. These seedlings are intended for conservation use only and may not be used for landscape plantings or resold as live plants.

Conservation plantings may function as wildlife habitat, windbreaks, wood lots, timber plantations, or educational and riparian (streambank) plantings. Species grown in the program are selected for characteristics that make them ideal candidates for conservation plantings.

What is the difference between container-grown vs. bare-root seedlings - container-grown seedlings are grown in individual 2-inch by 7-inch containers filled with a greenhouse potting mix. Container-grown seedlings have an intact root system and come in the original container. The advantages of container-grown seedlings compared with bare-root seedlings are: • Improved survival and first-year rate of growth under most conditions. • Extended spring planting season. • Greater flexibility in scheduling tree planting around soil conditions, weather conditions, and work schedule. • Easier to plant properly. Bare-root seedlings are grown 1 to 2 years in a field nursery, then lifted and shipped without soil on the roots.

“Marla has been instrumental in the growth of our business the past 20 years,” said Terry Stueder, owner of Stueder Contractors. “She plays an important role in every aspect of our business and we can always count on her to go the extra mile if necessary."

Having worked for JC Penney for 20 years as a merchandise manager/buyer before coming to Stueders in 2002, Poppelreiter says what she likes most is the people. She’s been in the retail/service industry for 40 years, having graduated from Fort Hays State University with a Business Administration degree.

Barton County Sheriff's Booking Activity (11/28)

Barton Community College Foundation Executive Director Lindsey Bogner
said the college in Great Bend does so many great things that many people are
unaware of. In an effort to showcase the impact the college has on the
community, region, state and the country, the Foundation has produced their
first edition of what will turn into an annual report. 
The report will give a detailed look at the funds raised by the Foundation, how
those monies are spent and the scholarships that are awarded. "A person can look at this report and get a really good example of what the foundation does and what is the heart of our mission," said Bogner. "Hopefully, it encourages others to do the same. If someone looks at this and goes 'Oh wow, I didn't know they started a scholarship...maybe I could do that.' It really improves the education of our area." 
The annual report will be sent digitally to all donors, scholarship contacts,
staff and available online at bartonccfoundation.org.

Bogner said the report will give donors and potential donors a chance to identify where their money is going and
how they can make an impact. 
"Gifts are personal to every donor," said Bogner. "When someone is looking to make an impact they want to make it where it means the most to them and where their heart is. We do a very good job of that because we do so much. We can pinpoint what exactly is going to build that bridge between that donor and what impact they want to have." 
The Foundation started in 1969 and creates funds for scholarships, special
projects and assisting with renovating and updating the college’s facilities
and technology.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

🎙Mental Health Awareness show

On Sunday, Nov. 27, at about 4:30 a.m., a Barton County Sheriff’s Office deputy stopped a white Chrysler Sebring on US 281 Highway, near mile post 100, south of the city of Great Bend. 

When the deputy approached the vehicle to contact the driver, the officer saw what they suspected to be methamphetamine in plain view inside the vehicle. Further investigation revealed the driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was in possession of more than 50 grams of methamphetamine as well as a quantity of marijuana.

Roscoe Lofton, age 42 of Montrose, Colorado, was arrested at the scene and transported to the Barton County Jail without incident. Lofton was charged with possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and possession of drug paraphernalia. 

Lofton is being held in lieu of a $100,000 bond.

HaysMed has recently opened a Pain Center. Dr. Keith Green, Anesthesiologist will be providing services in a clinic located at 2500 Canterbury, Suite 206. While Green has been providing pain management for over 25 years in the hospital setting this will be the first time that a dedicated clinic area will be utilized.

“Dr. Green is very well known in Hays and the surrounding area” said Bryan Brady, Vice President of Physician Practice Administration and Ancillary Services. “We are excited to expand the availability of pain control for patients in western Kansas.”

Services provided for interventional pain management include trigger point injections, nerve blocks, ablations, kyphoplasty, spinal column stimulator and epidural steroid injections.

Conditions that Green will treat are baclofen pump management for spasticity disorders, neurolytic blocks for cancer associated pain, chronic pain, cervical, thoracic and lumbar radiculopathy and complex regional pain syndrome.

Green also conducts an outreach clinic at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital (PVCH) on a regular basis.

As an anesthesiologist Green can offer a higher level of solutions for complex pain management.

“We are very fortunate to have Dr. Green’s expertise in the area of pain management.” Noted Brady. “There are many people who can benefit from these specialized services offered at both HaysMed and PVCH.”

'Pain Center' outreach clinic from Larned hospital

The Wall That Heals, a three-quarter scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial along with a mobile Education Center, is coming to Great Bend, KS on May 11th-May 14th, 2023 at Veterans Memorial Park&nbsp;and will be open 24 hours a day and free to the public.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Wall That Heals&nbsp;honors the more than three million Americans who served in the U.S. Armed forces in the Vietnam War and it bears the names of the 58,281 men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in Vietnam.

“We are excited to be able to host&nbsp;The Wall That Heals&nbsp;in Great Bend, said Larry Parson, Chairperson&nbsp;

for&nbsp;The Wall That Heals&nbsp;/ Great Bend Leadership Committee.&nbsp; "We have an opportunity to honor our Vietnam Veterans and our Hometown Heroes and the families to those listed on the Wall who have sacrificed so much for us.&nbsp;In addition, our students and citizens will get a rare opportunity to not only witness the Wall, but learn the history of the Vietnam War and the impact of the Vietnam Era from the educational mobile unit.&nbsp; We welcome&nbsp;The Wall That Heals&nbsp;to Great Bend."

Visitors will experience The Wall rising above them as they walk towards the apex, a key feature of the design of The Wall in D.C. Visitors are able to do name rubbings of individual service member’s names on The Wall.

The mobile Education Center exhibit includes: digital photo displays of “Hometown Heroes” - service members whose names are on The Wall that list their home of record within the area of a visit; digital photo displays of Vietnam veterans from the local area honored through VVMF’s&nbsp;In Memory&nbsp;program which honors veterans who returned home from Vietnam and later died; video displays that teach about the history and impact of The Wall; educational exhibits told through items representative of those left at The Wall in D.C.; a replica of the&nbsp;In Memory&nbsp;plaque; a map of Vietnam and a chronological overview of the Vietnam War. The Kansas Forage and Grassland Council and Kansas State University are teaming up to host their Annual Winter Forage Conference: Drought Survival, Recovery, and Success, on Thursday, December 15, in Great Bend, Kansas. The meeting will be held at the Burnside Room, 1214 Stone Street, and will run from 9:00 a.m.to 3:00 p.m., with a meal included.&nbsp;

This year’s conference features a great mix of university and industry presentations, with sessions covering range weed control, cattle markets, drones, soil fertility, alfalfa management, and tips for building a resilient business. Featured industry partners include Forage Genetics and Star Seed.&nbsp;

“Our presenters are some of the leading experts in Kansas, with a wealth of knowledge and experience,” said Dale Helwig Black, KSFGC President. “And we have a great mix of Industry Partners presenting at the conference. Companies with a long history and great forage expertise, like Forage Genetics and Star Seed,” said Mark Nelson, KSFGC Executive Secretary.&nbsp;

The event is free for current KSFGC members and $45 for non-members (which includes your KSFGC membership and lunch). BOOR: Winter forage conference in Great Bend

Traditions sometimes do come to an end, and so it is with the Great Bend Optimist Club Christmas Tree Lot.&nbsp; 

For decades the Optimist Club has sold fresh cut Christmas trees as a fundraising project.&nbsp; This year the club has chosen to discontinue tree sales.&nbsp; 

Steve Kummer, who has served as Tree Chairman for the Club for years said, “Manpower and profitability have caused the Optimist Club to reconsider this venture. The Club is grateful to the many families who have purchased fresh cut&nbsp;trees year after year."

Look for a new Great Bend Optimist Club fundraiser coming in the spring of 2023.&nbsp;

The Great Bend Optimist Club is one of 3,000 clubs worldwide, affiliated with Optimist International.&nbsp; Friend of Youth is the club motto, as all projects support the youth in the community.&nbsp; The club meets each Monday at noon (excluding major holidays) at the Walnut Bowl.&nbsp; Prospective members are always welcome to attend.&nbsp;&nbsp;
