Clark Griswold blinded his neighbors with 25,000 Christmas lights in the 1989 National Lampoon movie. As it turns out, that was child's play compared to the 35,000-plus synchronized lights now on display at 252 W. 15th Street in Hoisington. John Robinson moved into the residence four years ago and has turned his hobby into something the community can enjoy.

"Everything is either designed by me or by people who also do this," he said. "You go in and tell every bulb what to do. All my lights have a red, a green, and a blue light in it. So you can make any color, like a million-some possibilities of color."

A longtime-Hoisington resident, Robinson started with much smaller Christmas decorations at a previous location nearly a decade ago. Just three years ago at his current location, he created the synchronized display with around 15,000 lights. Adding an additional 5,000 lights from last year's show, that total is now beyond 35,000.

"Each one has a computer chip in it," he said. "With the program, you're telling every bulb what to do - what color to be, when, where, everything."

In reality, Robinson is not using old-fashioned light bulbs but modern LED RGB pixels. Using the three primary colors of red, green, and blue, the lights can generate virtually any color. Robinson uses software called xLights to formulate the various movements in time with music. He watches a 3-D version of his home and display while piecing together a sequence.

"As you sequence it and make it work, you can play it back and watch everything it's going to do right there on your computer screen," he said. "You have a better idea of what's going to be going on."

Using xLights, Robinson can separate each component of his decoration, then use his own personal effects or those designed by other light enthusiasts to bring the lights to life. Users can pinpoint an effect to an exact note in a song, or use pre-programmed sequences like chase or intensity effects that reflect the type of music being played. 

A complex design may take longer than a week to create. But with the software, users can share their creations with other users, who can tweak the show to fit their own display in a matter of hours. The technology allows for some professional displays right at home.

"Year after year it gets easier and easier," Robinson said. "I used to run mine off a laptop, and now I use a little Raspberry Pi circuit board computer with a computer chip in it so I don't even have to use my laptop anymore."

This year Robinson is adding something else to his light show: glowing bracelets. The bracelets include a radio frequency and will light up along with the display in the yard. Proceeds from the sale of the bracelets, which are available for $5 at Hoisington Veterinary Hospital, will go towards LADA Paws Rescue.

Robinson currently uses 18-20 songs in the display, and a few of those songs may change throughout the holiday season. The light show runs from 6-10:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 6-11:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Be sure to tune to 101.5 FM to hear the music.

	On November 10, the Kansas School Board voted 7-1 with two abstentions to pass a resolution.&nbsp; They recommend that schools drop their Native American (“Indian”) themed mascots. This came upon the recommendation of a commission, including representatives from four federally-recognized tribes with significant numbers here in Kansas.&nbsp; The resolution is not tied to funding or accreditation.&nbsp; Even so, several school districts including Atchison, Wichita, and Shawnee Mission had already stopped using such mascots, and more name changes are under consideration.

	Our region’s highest-profile team with such a name is of course the Kansas City Chiefs. Though they play in Missouri, the Chiefs Kingdom (as they call it) extends well into Kansas.&nbsp; The team name, stadium name, and arrowhead logo all reference Native Americans, and so do fan rituals such as the “war cry” and the “tomahawk chop.”&nbsp; With other sports teams having dumped such names, protests by local Native American groups to change the name are growing.&nbsp; A deep dive shows just how complicated such decisions can be.

	The Chiefs are named for former Kansas City, MO Mayor H. Roe Bartle, who was instrumental in moving the former Dallas Texans football team to KC.&nbsp; Bartle earned his nickname “The Chief” by founding a Boy Scout Camp near Osceola, MO, which is now named for him.&nbsp; He also founded a regional Scouting organization with the now politically-incorrect name, Tribe of Mic-O-Say, which has tens of thousands of fiercely loyal members and supporters, mostly in Missouri and Kansas.&nbsp; Many alumni and adult leaders have given generously of their time and money over the years to support the organization.

	Scouting legend holds that Bartle founded Camp Osceola after studying with Native American tribes in Montana.&nbsp; Impressed with their rituals in which boys become men, and long before a time when gender neutrality was an expected norm, Bartle created an imaginary “tribe” for Boy Scouts where they could practice similar initiation rites.&nbsp; To this day, boys (and now girls) recreate these rituals as part of their rites of joining the organization.&nbsp;&nbsp;

	Mic-O-Say is just one example of Scouting-connected “Indian” lore that is increasingly considered offensive today. &nbsp; Scouting itself is also in big trouble.&nbsp; Formerly called Boy Scouts of America, they are now in bankruptcy.&nbsp; Some Mic-O-Say youth and parents are weighing in with proposals for new themes.&nbsp; My favorite is Star Wars, but this of course would require an arrangement with the Disney Corporation.&nbsp; My entire immediate family are Mic-O-Say members, and I do hope that they find a way to preserve the organization and Scouting itself, with its commitment to team building and survival skills.&nbsp; This will require dialogue, respect and sensitivity toward Native American communities.

	As for the Chiefs, I am tempted to suggest that they keep their name but drop the “war cry” and “tomahawk chop.”&nbsp; Alas, fans may find this confusing.&nbsp; Instead, a complete name change may be inevitable, but there are further complications.&nbsp; For example, what about the popular “arrowhead” tattoo many fans have on their bodies?&nbsp; The team would also have to spend a great deal of money removing old signage and other branding, and irate and forgetful fans alike are likely to continue using the old names, rituals and symbols for years.&nbsp; After all, I still meet people who refer to Emporia State as “Kansas State Teachers College” — a name we dropped in the early 1970s.&nbsp; Finally, the whole thing could easily get sucked into our society’s wider culture war.

	Changing offensive names and showing respect for all cultures is vital work – but it sure does come with complications.

INSIGHT KANSAS: Past, present and future of KC Chiefs’ name

Daryl Moore has served as the assistant principal at Great Bend High
School since the fall of 2015. His time with USD 428 will come to a close after
the school year in 2023 as the Board of Education accepted his retirement
notice at their monthly luncheon this week. 
USD 428 Assistant Superintendent John Popp said the district was fortunate to
keep Moore around as long as they did. "Mr. Moore originally came on to work for us for two or three years before he wanted to quit," said Popp. "He's been with us for eight years. He stayed a lot longer than he planned and we were happy to have him." 
Moore came to the Great Bend school district after serving as principal at
Beloit High School the previous six years. Moore was also a principal at
Republic County.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Great Bend City Administrator Kendal Francis will be hired as the Hutchinson City Administrator, pending the approval of his contract by the Hutchinson City Council in their meeting on Tuesday.

According to the contract as printed in the meeting agenda documents, Francis will start in Hutchinson on January 1, 2023 and receive&nbsp;a bi-weekly base salary of $6,730.77 and a one time payment of $10,000&nbsp;for relocation, housing, down payment assistance and related incidentals.

The City also is going to contribute three percent (3%) of Francis'&nbsp;base salary on his behalf to a deferred compensation program of his choice.

He will also receive a $500 a month vehicle allowance to use his own vehicle for city business and a $100 a month cell phone allowance.

Francis has worked in municipal positions since at least 1994. According to his LinkedIn profile, he was a wastewater treatment plant operator in Beloit from 1994 to 2007 and foreman of the water plant from 2007 to 2009, before being named Director of Water/Wastewater Operations in March of 2009 and holding that job until January of 2014.&nbsp;

He then became City Administrator in Lakin for a year and a half, then Coffeyville for not quite three years, before coming to Great Bend in July of 2018.

Interim City Manager Gary Meagher has been serving Hutchinson since Jeff Cantrell's contract was not renewed in mid-May.

Park Ranger Ben Long said volunteers can help with living history presentations, desk operation, leading tours or maintenance.

As the holiday season is upon us, it is a great idea to have a pie, quick bread or cookies stored in the freezer for your family gatherings. Many baked goods freeze and thaw beautifully. The key to success is to follow recommended procedures.

· The freezer temperature should be 0 degrees Fahrenheit or less.

· Use moisture-proof, vapor-proof wraps or containers such as plastic containers with tight-fitting lids, heavy duty foil and freezer-weight plastic bags and wraps.

· Cool baked goods completely before preparing for the freezer. This will prevent moisture condensation from warm food which could make it soggy after thawing.

· Be sure there is enough room for expansion when filling containers. Press the air out and seal tightly before freezing.

Cookies freeze well if packed in a rigid container to prevent breakage. If cookies are frosted before freeing, freeze on a cookie sheet, then layer with waxed paper in freezer container. Thaw in container at room temperature. Unfrosted cookies may be stored up to 12 months; frosted ones just 2 months.

Quick breads freeze well too. Make sure you cool completely and wrap well with products noted above. Thaw at room temperature and consider slicing while partially frozen to prevent crumbling. Quick breads can be stored for up to 4 months, but they never last that long at my house!

Unbaked pies have fresher fruit flavor, but the crust may absorb juices and become soggy easier. Brush bottom crust with melted butter and allow to set up before filling. Fruit fillings may be thickened and cooled before adding to crust. Do not slit the top crust before freezing. When you unwrap the pie, cut slits in the top pastry and bake at 425 degrees for 15 minutes and then lower the temperature to 375 degrees and bake 30 to 45 minutes, or until the center is bubbly and crust is nicely browned. Unbaked pies can be frozen up to 4 months.

KRUG: Keys to freezing baked goods successfully

TOPEKA&nbsp;–&nbsp;Kirk Thompson, Director of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI), the premier statewide criminal investigative agency, has announced his upcoming retirement, effective January 10, 2023, according to a media release from the agency.

Kirk Thompson has served as KBI Director for over 11 years. His distinguished law enforcement service spanned more than 46 years.

Thompson first entered law enforcement in 1976, at the age of 19, as a deputy sheriff with the Barton County Sheriff’s Office. In this role he served the central Kansas community of Great Bend where he grew up. He then moved to Topeka in 1979, after joining the KBI as a special agent.

Thompson is a graduate of Washburn University, the FBI National Academy, the Kansas Certified Pubic Manager program, and has completed numerous other law enforcement leadership programs.

Over the course of his KBI career, Thompson served in several supervisory roles, working his way up the ranks to Assistant Director and Associate Director. Then in July of 2011, Attorney General Derek Schmidt appointed Thompson as the 12th&nbsp;Director of the KBI.

Thompson devoted more than a decade serving in the KBI’s top post. During his tenure he enhanced every division of the Bureau. In 2012, in partnership with the FBI, the first satellite Regional Computer Forensics Laboratory in the nation was established at KBI headquarters to conduct timely analysis of digital forensic evidence. Then in 2015, the Bureau opened its Forensic Science Center, a new state-of-the art laboratory located on the campus of Washburn University. Also during his time as Director, Thompson expanded the KBI child victims unit, to include the 2018 creation of the Northeast Child Victim Task Force, a team and facility focused on investigating major crimes perpetrated against children.

In 2017, Thompson successfully advocated for additional forensic scientists to test the statewide accumulation of sexual assault kits discovered during the KBI-led Kansas Sexual Assault Kit Initiative, and to expedite future submission and testing of this valuable forensic evidence. In 2019, under Thompson, the KBI established a cyber crime unit to investigate large-scale cyber threats in Kansas. Thompson also secured multi-million dollar funding and support for major updates to several critical criminal justice systems&nbsp;-&nbsp;the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS), the Kansas Incident Based Reporting System (KIBRS), and the Kansas Criminal Justice Information System (KCJIS).

During his time at the KBI, Thompson served on the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training, the Kansas Human Trafficking Advisory Board, the Midwest High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Executive Board, the Kansas Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Advisory Board, the Kansas Commission on Emergency Planning and Response, and many other boards, committees, and commissions. Thompson was also an active member of the Kansas Sheriffs’ Association, the Kansas Association of Chiefs of Police, the Kansas Peace Officers Association, and the Association of State Criminal Investigative Agencies.

Attorney General Derek Schmidt said of Thompson’s service, "Kirk Thompson has served as an exceptional leader for the KBI. Never drawing attention to himself, he always has insisted on the highest standards of professionalism and has moved the Bureau forward in so many quiet but critical ways. “Serving as Director of the KBI has been the highpoint of my career. I am grateful to Attorney General Schmidt for allowing me the opportunity to work with the exceptional men and women of the KBI, and alongside our federal, state, and local law enforcement partners,” said Thompson.

“I’m very proud of what this agency has accomplished over the past decade to safeguard the public, and pursue justice for victims of violent crimes. While many public safety challenges still face our state, I am absolutely certain the KBI will continue to successfully engage those challenges and strive to make Kansas a better place to live,” Thompson added.

Thompson began discussions about retirement several months ago, and KBI employees were formally notified of his retirement plans in early November. He agreed to serve through the end of the year.

In retirement, Thompson plans to travel with his wife, Stephanie, and spend additional time with his daughter, son-in-law, and three grandchildren. He also looks forward to devoting free time to volunteer opportunities and newfound hobbies.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

repair cost of a 2008 pickup that was fixed at Bob’s Service Center in Clafin
for $5,700. 
While Commissioner Jennifer Schartz was fine with the expense coming before the
board, she wondered if the spending amount that needs to be approved should be
higher for department heads. 
"What is the amount that Darren (Darren Williams, County Works Director) brings to us, if it's over $5,000?" asked Schartz. "Is that a reasonable amount of money? I know things are so expensive now. Should we change that to $10,000? It seems like $5,000 for a repair of a truck is very low." 
Barton County Operations Director Matt Patzner said repairs do not need to be
sent to the commission unless the cost exceeds $15,000. For improvements or new
purchases, anything past $5,000 needs board approval. 
Wondering if they needed to increase the procurement amounts, the commission

When about 70 teenagers recently participated in an exercise called “Crisis Orientation,” several scenarios were outlined at the beginning.

· Your friend sees a hate comment on an uploaded video.

· Your significant other says they will kill themselves if you leave them.

· Your friend shows you cuts on their arms and asks you not to tell anyone.

· Your friend tells you they don’t get the point of trying anymore.

#Zero Reasons Why of Central Kansas recently hosted this exercise, which was open to local and area school districts by Zoom. #ZRW is a teen-led suicide prevention program that is sponsored locally by The Center for Counseling &amp; Consultation, 5815 Broadway.

“This program empowers teenagers to gain some insight into how to help a family member or friend,” said Holly Bowyer, The Center’s teen liaison for #ZRW. “While there are no hard and fast rules for helping someone who is struggling, Crisis Orientation offers guidelines and ideas about possible actions to take – or not take.”

Possibilities for action on behalf of someone in crisis include: checking in on the person; contacting a trusted adult, school counselor or parents; and calling a crisis hotline.

“We understand this process can be scary,” Bowyer noted. “It is quite understandable if you are nervous and have a fear of the unknown. But you can intervene because you care.

“It also is important to understand what you should NOT do,” Bowyer continued. “When someone is struggling with suicidal tendencies, you shouldn’t ignore their comments; keep it to yourself; leave the person alone; or joke around about the situation.”

Crisis Orientation is offered to teenagers at least once during a school year. Hoisington, Ellinwood, Stafford and Chase school districts were represented at the recent exercise.

Other local and area school districts involved in #ZRW are Great Bend, Central Plains, Lyons, Larned, Pawnee Heights and Sterling.

Most of these school districts are actively involved in #ZRW on a regular basis.

“You can see the students’ excitement as they plan activities for their peers,” Bowyer commented. “Many wonderful things are happening in our schools and communities. We get many positive comments about #Zero Reasons Why activities, including Crisis Orientation.”

Those who want to seek help immediately have several 24/7 options. They may contact The Center by calling 620-792-2544 or its crisis hotline number, 1-800-875-2544. Other options are the new nationwide 988 number, and 1-800-273-8255, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, as well as texting 741741.

Helping Barton Co. area teenagers identify suicidal tendencies 

Monday, December 5, Barton and Rush County Conservation Districts are hosting a&nbsp;Sustainable Farm Workshop&nbsp;at the Township Hall in Rush Center, KS.&nbsp; Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. with presentations and panels from 9 a.m. till 3:30 p.m. with a catered meal. The speaker topics will be Soil Health, Drought Resilient Farming, Farming with Cover Crops, Spring Wheat, and Marketing.

Speakers on soil health include Candy J. Thomas, Regional Soil Health Specialist for NRCS, and Dale Younker, State Soil Health Specialist for NRCS. Dale Strickler, author, and an international sustainable farming consultant will be talking about drought resilient farming and Travis Brunner, CEO of Agribusiness Solution LLC, will be discussing risk management of crops.

Local presenters include Kevin Wiltse, rural Rush County, who incorporates cover crops in his intensive rotation of cattle on standing forage and Tim Maier, rural Barton County who also incorporates cover crops into his farm operation.&nbsp;

Earlier in 2022, Ken Urban and Mike Younger, both of Rush County, participated in a spring wheat trial in cooperation with the Barton County and Rush County Conservation Districts and funded through the Kansas Department of Agriculture through the Division of Conservation (KDA-DOC) with Kansas Water Plan Funds.&nbsp; &nbsp;Both will be present to discuss their findings

Barton County Sheriff's Booking Activity (11/30)

The physical and mental differences between students in kindergarten and
those in 6th grade are night and day. In a way to create a family
culture of inclusivity, Lincoln Elementary School in Great Bend began their
Lion Pride Family program. 
Lincoln’s Student Family Advocate Jose Arias said the school wanted to make
sure the younger students are not intimated by the older children in the
building. 
A mixture of students, from kindergarten through 6th grade, meet the
final Fridays of the month to do different activities together. "The kids really enjoy it," said Arias. "They get a chance to meet kids they haven't met or make a connection with a kid they thought they wouldn't be able to. This creates that family culture that includes everyone."

There are about 17 “prides” or groups at Lincoln with roughly 15 students in
each pride. 

At Wednesday’s USD 428 Board of Education luncheon, one of the
kindergarteners at Lincoln expressed his enjoyment of Pride Family. 
"In Pride Family we meet together and do a lot of stuff. We get used to the bigger kids and it's a lot better in the school." 
The assortment of students will have nine Pride Family gatherings throughout

The pilot has come in for a landing. In this case, the pilot is the famous aviator Amelia Earhart (or her replica in the form of a bronze statue), and her landing place isn’t an airport — it’s the nation’s capitol.&nbsp;

Amelia Earhart was recently honored by the State of Kansas by having her statue placed in Statuary Hall at the U.S. Capitol building.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Statuary Hall is that area of the capitol that displays statues depicting people representing all 50 states. Each state is authorized to send two statues to this collection.&nbsp;&nbsp;Kansas recently replaced one of its statues with one of Amelia Earhart, who captured the world’s attention as a pioneer in aviation.&nbsp;

With support from the Atchison Amelia Earhart Foundation, her statue was unveiled in the National Statuary Collection in July, 2022.&nbsp;

Amelia Earhart was born in Atchison on July 24, 1897. She must have been quite the adventurous child.&nbsp;&nbsp;One time she and friends built a homemade roller coaster by greasing boards with lard and suspending them from the top of a toolshed. Amelia made the trial run on this roller coaster in a wooden crate and crashed part way down.&nbsp;

She came up with a torn dress and split lip but a big smile, proclaiming, "Oh! It's just like flying!"&nbsp;

During World War I, she worked as a nurse’s aid at a military hospital and heard the military pilots talk about their flights. Amelia’s interest grew when she attended an airshow in Canada.&nbsp;

In 1921, Amelia Earhart took her first flying lessons. Six months later, she bought her first plane.&nbsp;

Amelia went on to make history: She was the first president of the Ninety-Nines, a women's aviation organization; the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic; first woman to fly solo coast-to-coast; and the first person to fly solo from Hawaii to the mainland.&nbsp;

Through her husband, a publisher, she published several books and articles. She designed fashion clothing and had her own luggage line. She received many honors, including the Distinguished Flying Cross from Congress, before disappearing on an ill-fated attempt to fly around the globe.&nbsp;

So what is Statuary Hall and how did Amelia Earhart come to land there? Statuary Hall goes back to the 1860s when a south wing was added to the U.S. Capitol building. The House of Representatives moved into its new chamber where it still meets today.&nbsp;

The House was debating what should be done with the former chamber that it had vacated. A suggestion came from Rep. Justin Morrill of Vermont. (This was the same congressman who authored the Morrill Act that authorized land grants for public higher education and under which Kansas State University became the nation’s first operational land grant university.)&nbsp;

Morrill suggested that the former House chamber become a place to display statues from each state. His suggestion was adopted. Every state was allowed to have two statues.&nbsp;

One might ask, who were the two statues from Kansas? Would you guess, George Glick and John J. Ingalls? When I led capitol tours years ago, our visitors would ask,&nbsp;&nbsp;“Who are those guys?&nbsp;&nbsp;Never heard of them.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

I learned that George Glick was a one-term governor of Kansas and John J. Ingalls was a long-time Senator during the late 1800s.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

In 2003, Kansas became the first state to change its two representative statues. The Kansas Legislature voted to replace Glick and Ingalls with statues depicting Dwight D. Eisenhower and Amelia Earhart, provided the statues were funded with private money.&nbsp;&nbsp;Ike was placed there in 2003 and Amelia followed in 2022.&nbsp;

The Atchison Amelia Earhart Foundation paid for the statue of Amelia. The foundation is also working toward opening an aviation museum in her honor. That would be a wonderful addition to the rural community of Atchison, population 10,885 people. Now, that’s rural.&nbsp;

Cooking with children can be fun and exhausting! However, taking the time and patience to cook with children has many benefits. Just about every developmental domain can be strengthened through having your child help in the kitchen. Skills children learn in the kitchen include math, reading, fine motor, following directions, sequencing, cultures, language, basic chemistry, and nutrition. Cooking is a life skill that they will need when they become adults. That is quite a list! Cooking also stimulates all five senses and that is how children learn! When children help in the kitchen they are more likely to try new foods because they helped to make them. Have your picky eater choose a recipe and make it together.

How do you go about cooking with children? A few strategies include: plan, allow plenty of time, use child-friendly recipes, have patience, have a sense of adventure and humor, and practice good hygiene by washing hands frequently. When planning ahead, make sure you have everything you need and set up as much ahead of time based on the age of the child. The more organized you are the less stressful it will be. Pick a few days throughout the holiday season to mark on your calendar so you have the time to devote to the activity. By allowing plenty of time you and the children aren’t rushed. If your child is fairly young, consider their attention span and prepare some things ahead of time. Expect a mess! It’s inevitable so just go with the flow. The children can help clean up after themselves, which is also a life skill! This can be a special time of bonding with your child and creating those special times that they will always remember. And don’t forget to take some pictures!

Here is a list of a few tasks that children can do in the kitchen. As the parent, you know your child(ren) and their skills the best. Use your own judgement and stay near so you can help them be safe.

So, go ahead and make some memories this year and enjoy some time in the kitchen with your children. Remember it’s not about the end product but the fun and time spent together.
