The Kansas Bureau of Investigation's forensic science lab in Great Bend serves 70 counties in western Kansas. Yet half that lab is without air conditioning. Thursday afternoon, new KBI Director Tony Mattivi and several state legislators toured the lab ahead of a project to fix the air conditioning problem. Mattivi thanked the legislators for their assistance.

"The budget bill that was recently passed also allowed for an appropriation in the amount of $910,000 of the American Rescue Plan Act - what we call ARPA - 910,000 ARPA dollars," he said, "to replace the HVAC system right here on one side of this facility in Great Bend, and to finish a laboratory renovation project we've been working on here at the KBI for several years."

The bill also increased the KBI's rehabilitation and repair budget from $100,000 to $300,000 annually, which will improve the organization's ability to maintain its facilities. Increased funding will also go toward the KBI's Surge Initiative, which aims at making strides in the fight against violent crime, crimes against children, and drug trafficking, especially in regard to fentanyl.&nbsp;

Eric Moore, a latent print forensic scientist and KBI Crime Scene Response Team member, headed a 2019 project for improvements to the south side of the first floor at the lab. The project included moving three drug chemistry instruments into a single, cooled room. KBI Lab Director T.L. Price said those instruments cost between $100,000 to $180,000.

"We don't want to replace them until they are actually end of life," Price said. "Unfortunately, sometimes, because of our inability to have the right space, we have burnt some instruments up over the years. It happens."

Phase two of the project will include the new HVAC system on the north side of the first floor. Moore said his latent print lab was 88 degrees Thursday afternoon, and he usually schedules his day around prioritizing the lab in the cooler mornings. Currently, there are two labs on the floor, with four drug chemistry scientists using a smaller lab. The renovation includes a swap with the latent print scientists to give the chemists approximately 400 extra square feet.

Price said doing the project in two phases has been a happy accident, allowing local scientists to stay at home instead of traveling to other KBI labs in Kansas City or Pittsburg. Along with their lab duties, the scientists receive some 4,000 court subpoenas each year.

"Some of our scientists have more subpoenas on their calendar than they actually have work days," Price said. "They have several each day, and they're listed No. 1, 2, 3, 4. We let those counties know, if Lyon County and Clay County both don't need me that day, then you can have me."

 The KBI office in Great Bend houses 28 employees, including 15 investigators that serve 46 western Kansas counties. Approximately 25 percent of all evidence submitted to the KBI passes through the Great Bend office.

The Sunflower Rod and Custom Association G.B. (SRCA) have made the decision to cancel the 2023 race season at the SRCA Dragstrip. Great Bend, the owner of the track, has hired a consultant and engineer who are investigating the recently constructed track surface and will be furnishing a report. The final report has not been received but the preliminary indication is that the track will require substantial remedial work which might include a replacement of the racing surface.

The decision is bittersweet. After thorough analysis and discussions, it was determined that the maintenance and operating expense of the current drag strips' surface for continued safe, high-speed racing would be very expensive for the 2023 race season, only to be torn out with the anticipated concrete replacement.

SRCA will be contacting all pit stall holders, gold card recipients, sponsorship advertisers and other entities that have already prepaid for the 2023 season by email or phone to determine if their desire would be to roll over to the next season or receive a refund.&nbsp;&nbsp;

SRCA Dragstrip cancels 2023 race season in Great Bend

Bargain hunters on your mark, get set, go to the Ellinwod City-wide Garage Sale on Saturday, April 29. Chamber President Jonelle Niles said it's not a typical weekend of garage-saling with plenty of places to shop.

"There are 20-plus addresses out there for people to go to," she said. "We generally provide a map that lists all the different locations and then other events that are going on in town they can stop at."

One of those events will be the Barton Community College tennis team's brat sale outside Home Lumber. The garage sales officially kick-off at 8 a.m. that Saturday, but the chamber needs addresses for its map by April 23.

"You can send it to info@ellinwoodchamber.com, or you can go to our Facebook page and send it through Messenger on there, and we will get it added," Niles said.

Maps with all the stops will be provided prior to the big sale. Follow the Ellinwood Chamber of Commerce on Facebook for all updates.

Ellinwood's City-Wide Garage Sale is April 29

What is motivation? It can be what drives you to maintain or achieve goals. Or, you might say it is a form of desire. It is important to know where your motivation comes from. It could be external things that motivate you or internal desires that drive you.

External motivators are usually what you rely on when it comes to exercise. Think of a carrot and a stick. You lure yourself to exercise with the carrot — “You’ll lose weight!” — or you hit yourself with an invisible stick — “You’ll get fat if you don’t exercise!” With this type of motivation, you are not exercising because you like it. Rather, it will result in what you want sometime in the future.

Extrinsic motivation is not always bad, if it works. But what if it doesn’t give you what you want? What if you don’t have genetics to achieve a certain size or weight? What if you can’t exercise enough to get the bathing suit body you want? This is when motivation slides.

There is another type of motivation that is internal, something that is important to you now and not some future goal. Perhaps your motivation is that exercise feels good, it helps relieve stress, and as your body gets stronger you can do more than you did before.

Identify some things that you value most in your life and think about how sitting less and moving more can contribute to those values. Some examples: “I value being a productive employee and I know that taking a daily walk helps me feel less stressed and more focused at work. “I value time with my grandchildren. I know that stretching, doing strengthening exercises and walking will help me be more active with them.”

External motivators can be fleeting, but internal motivators have staying power. This week, focus on your values and what motivates you from within.

Since there is an “overwhelming number of children” who need mental-health services, The Center for Counseling &amp; Consultation started a new program to better accommodate families, said Shanna Long, Community Based Services clinical coordinator.

The Center now offers Access Groups that can help bridge the gap between the agency’s intake process and a child receiving individual therapy services.

Mindfulness activities are at the core of these groups, which are available for children ages 3 through 18 who become clients at The Center; they meet at least twice a month. A child may attend all or just some of the sessions.

“Mindfulness means paying attention to life in the here and now,” Long explained. “The whole idea is to learn and then practice coping skills. We want to help build a solid foundation for children to work from.”

Access Groups are designed for children struggling with anger, hyperactivity, lack of focus, anxiety or depression. Activities involve connecting, breathing, moving, focusing and relaxing.

“For example,” Long said, “certain exercises encourage kiddos to notice their breathing and how to regulate it. These activities can: decrease the negative response to stress; have a calming effect; or even energize the child.

“If you are anxious and panting, the more you pant the more anxious you become,” she continued. “On the other side of the coin, breathing techniques can increase energy.”

Throughout these and other activities, a child will begin noticing themselves and their surroundings, which builds relationships and connections, Long added.

The groups accommodate up to six children at a time. Long chooses a theme, such as animals or games, for each session.

“Yes, we want quiet and relaxation but we also want to have fun and be playful as children take time to notice their surroundings and how they feel,” she said. “These evidence-based practices can help create awareness outside the group in day-to-day life.”

The groups don’t follow a rigid curriculum; each session stands on its own. As she considers the needs of a group, Long tries to accommodate particular situations.

“I am really excited about this program. We always look for ways to meet families’ needs,” said Long, who also is a licensed social worker. “I have a background in group facilitation and realize the value of participants learning from one another.

“They will better connect with themselves, the environment and other people.”

Julie Kramp, The Center’s executive director, said she appreciates “Shanna’s initiative and positive outlook, which enhance our ability to serve children who deserve our services, despite the high demand on our workforce.

“Mindfulness practices are fantastic and have shown proven results. They are truly innovative and Shanna should be commended for her commitment to the people we serve.”

The Center starts program to accommodate children, families

The Golden Belt Community Concert Association’s 2023-2024 membership campaign began April 18 and will continue through May 12, offering seven concerts – one more than the previous season.

New members joining the new season by April 22 will be admitted to the final concert of the current season – Beginnings, the ultimate Chicago tribute band – as a Bonus Concert. GBCCA offers bonus concert to new members joining by April 22

"There's somebody out there, somebody go sell something." That was the quote selected to honor William J. Miller at the new Miller's of Claflin and Ashley Distribution Center in Salina named in his honor. The Salina Area Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting at the facility Wednesday. Miller's of Claflin Owner Remington Miller said the distribution center may be 80 minutes away, but it will benefit customers in all seven Miller's locations.

"Every Tuesday and Friday, we do transfers," he said. "Basically, even though it's in Salina, if we have it stocked there, we'll be able to get it to the customer's home, regardless of which store you buy, within a couple of days. We're the only stocking dealer outside of Wichita, Topeka, and Kansas City in the state."

The William J. Miller Ashley HomeStore Distribution Center is 50,000 square feet of actual space, but with rack space, has the equivalent of double that. The new space not only allows for better inventory but will also free up space in other locations.

"Our current warehouse also has a Clearance Center attached, and we're going to be converting all that to showroom," Miller said. "The Furniture Clearance Center is at around 6,000 square feet, and we're expanding that to 18,000 and taking our warehouse out of that and moving it to the new facility."

Miller said the new distribution center will also allow the supplier to buy in larger quantities and pass those savings onto the customer. Miller's of Claflin, founded in 1903, still has its original store in Claflin, and now has Mattress Solutions stores in Great Bend, Hays, and Salina. Miller's also operates Furniture Clearance Center stores in Hays and Salina.

planned before the first weekend in June, but the wheels are spinning for June
Jaunt. 

The outdoor festival this year at Jack Kilby Square in Great Bend will
bring back many of the fan-favorites but also add new features like a mosaic selfie
wall, an LED robot performance, and potentially a mural tour. Also new this
year is the City Council Quest. "There are people that have asked who are some of our council members," said Hayes. "I'm going to create a fun card that has all the councilmembers pictures on it. We'll have a space for signatures. If people catch the councilmembers out that week and get your their signatures, they will be able to win prizes."

Clinching a spot in the title game just 24-hours ago, the Barton Community College eSports Rainbow 6 Siege squad completed the defense tour after four-plus hours Wednesday evening claiming the NJCAAE Spring National Championship with a 3-1 victory over Northeast Alabama Community College.

Claiming the third R6 title and program's fifth National Championship, the five pack of&nbsp;<a href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/esports/2022-23/bios/dubose_joel_5m96" target="_blank">Joel DuBose</a>,&nbsp;<a href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/esports/2022-23/bios/ensley_ashton_hnsy" target="_blank">Ashton Ensly</a>,&nbsp;<a href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/esports/2022-23/bios/friedli_eli_ebzf" target="_blank">Eli Friedli</a>,&nbsp;<a href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/esports/2022-23/bios/fullingim_jacob_18bq" target="_blank">Jacob Fullingim</a>, and&nbsp;<a href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/esports/2022-23/bios/mcfadden_jared_8hbl" target="_blank">Jared McFadden</a>, concluded their second consecutive perfect season at 9-0 while extending the winning streak to 19 straight and winners in 39 of their last 40 matches. The squad also joins elite company becoming the third team in NJCAAE history to win three Championships in four seasons.

When asked about his R6 clan Head Coach Curtis Rose stated, "I'm just proud of their determination and laser focus over these past four seasons. When you complete one undefeated season and then do it again against everyone's best night in and night out it shows how gritty these guys are while setting the bar high for our program."

Starting the evening off at Oregon, a classic map for all known players, the Cougars attacking stage was even at 3-3. In for a dogfight and battling on the defensive side, Northeast Alabama took advantage of the lost attention in the right areas sending the game into overtime at 3 apiece. In the overtime, Barton was able to break through on the attacking round while clearing things up on the defensive side to claim the opening map 8-6 and leap out to a 1-0 match lead in the best of five series.

Focused and regrouped out of the 10-minute map break, Head Coach Curtis Rose and clan structured a different attacking and defensive approach in the second map gaining a 5-1 lead before taking the two of the final three resulting in a 7-2 victory to grasp a 2-0 match lead heading into the third map at Chalet.

Facing elimination Northeast Alabama Community College answered the challenge jumping out front of Barton 4-2 with the Cougars forced to play a much more convention playstyle to keep the map within reach. Able to claw within one at 5-4, NACC pulled away with the final three rounds claiming the third 7-4 and slicing the match to 2-1.

Battling at Skyscraper in map four which the Cougars had yet to lose on, Barton would choose to defend on the defensive end. Knowing if they could hold a 4-2 line on the protection side, they'd be in good shape and Barton did just that taking it a step above grasping a 5-1 lead. Returning to the normal game plan on the attack, Northeast Alabama would not be finished taking the next three rounds. Sensing momentum on the opposite side, Coach Rose burned his timeout going back to the drawing board and structuring a new tactic with the Cougars organizing two of the next three rounds perfectly to seize back-to-back Championships.

Barton's NJCAAE Playoffs will continue Friday as the Overwatch 2 squad will take on seventh seeded Missouri State University of West Plains with the winner advancing to the Semifinal's later Friday evening.

In the overtime, Barton was able to break through on the attacking round while clearing things up on the defensive side to claim the opening map 8-6 and leap out to a 1-0 match lead in the best of five series.Focused and regrouped out of the 10-minute map break, Head Coach Curtis Rose and clan structured a different attacking and defensive approach in the second map gaining a 5-1 lead before taking the two of the final three resulting in a 7-2 victory to grasp a 2-0 match lead heading into the third map at Chalet.Facing elimination Northeast Alabama Community College answered the challenge jumping out front of Barton 4-2 with the Cougars forced to play a much more convention playstyle to keep the map within reach. Able to claw within one at 5-4, NACC pulled away with the final three rounds claiming the third 7-4 and slicing the match to 2-1.Battling at Skyscraper in map four which the Cougars had yet to lose on, Barton would choose to defend on the defensive end. Knowing if they could hold a 4-2 line on the protection side, they'd be in good shape and Barton did just that taking it a step above grasping a 5-1 lead. Returning to the normal game plan on the attack, Northeast Alabama would not be finished taking the next three rounds. Barton eSports team claims program's fifth National Championship

Many people that grew up in Great Bend years ago have their stories or
memories of the Zarah Hotel building at the corner of Lakin Avenue and Main
Street. Built in 1925, the ground floor of the building has consistently been
used by a number of retail businesses but the second, third and fourth floors
have been unoccupied for decades. A group of individuals are striving to
turn around the long-time vacant upper floors into 24 apartments. 

Earlier this
month, Pomeroy Development announced the Zarah Apartments project was awarded
$1.425 million in Moderate Income Housing funds from the Kansas Housing
Resources Corporation. Pomeroy Developer Justin Pregont said the funds are a
good step for the nearly $6 million project. "We have submitted information to the City of Great Bend to pursue a Rural Housing Incentive District and something called an Industrial Revenue Bond Issue that has to do with both property tax abatement and abatement on sales tax for construction materials," said Pregont. "We do not have the final approval of those. That's an ongoing conversation. I think we'll get there, but those are a couple of examples of things that are outstanding."

The City of Great Bend’s application was one of 16 chosen to receive funding
from roughly 60 applications submitted across Kansas. Plenty of planning and design
work is still needed for the rental space that will include studio, one-bedroom
and two-bedroom apartments ranging from $800 to $1,200 in monthly rent.

with GLMV Architecture, referred to the downtown structure as a time capsule
that has a story to tell and is worthy of adaptive reuse. "We've done the assessments and the analysis on some of the challenges and features that we could see in an older building," said Robl. "For example, a lot of these rooms have Jack-and-Jill bathrooms with old bathtubs. We have to figure out some of the plumbing, electrical and mechanical features. That was all done in an assessment over a year ago. We have this thought out."

Robl noted the building is
structurally sound, including the roof. With no elevator access currently to
the fourth floor, the project renovation will only include the second and third
levels at the time.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; Pregont said their aggressive timeline is to finish the rehabilitation of the Zarah Apartments upper floors by the end of 2024.

"I've lived in downtown districts before," said Pregont. "I've lived down the block from a coffee shop. I'm much more likely to patronize that coffee shop if I live upstairs. Historically, downtown districts were vibrant, mixed-used places. Over the last 80 years or so that has gone by the wayside but there's a real resurgence of that philosophy. Adding residential to the mix is a really big piece of the puzzle."

The Zarah Mall falls under the MyTown LP initiative, with the majority owned by Sheryl Cheely. Local businessman Mark Bitter is also getting involved with the renovation project. MyTown was created several years ago and given a loan by the city to foster more downtown businesses with incentives.

"MyTown has been leading the way in investing, saving properties and making sure they are at their best use," said Pregont. "This project is another example of that. I think MyTown's hope is that this investment is just the beginning of what can be really great things in downtown Great Bend."

As the new director of production and recycling at Sunflower Diversified Services, Mandy Grizzell is updating recycling procedures and seeking new business contracts for the non-profit agency’s manufacturing plant.

Sunflower serves children and adults with developmental disabilities and delays in central Kansas.

Grizzell has worked in both the production and recycling operations for three years and is “off and running” in her new leadership position; she previously was interim director.

“My short-term goals are to get everything cleaned up outside where some recyclable materials have littered the area,” Grizzell said. “We have been working steadily on this since early this year and are making great progress.

“We work extra hours by coming in on Saturday mornings and staying late at least one day a week. We will keep going until the job is done.”

Grizzell expressed her appreciation to local residents who have donated equipment such as loaders and tractors to help with this clean-up effort.

“We also have added and replaced fencing,” she noted. “And we are hoping for state grant money to buy new storage containers.”

Sunflower has applied to the Kansas Department of Health &amp; Environment for the grant. Two years ago, KDHE helped finance a baler and last year it was a forklift.

The recycling operation employs approximately 25 Sunflower clients, while about 60 work on a regular basis at the manufacturing plant.

“Since we always want to offer more job opportunities at the plant, we are seeking more contracts with local and area businesses,” Grizzell said. “Packaging and assembly tasks are especially attractive to us.”

As the new director, the categories of her responsibilities include: job scheduling; inventory; equipment; facilities; quality assurance; customer service; and safety.

Grizzell, originally from Lewis, earned a legal secretary associate’s degree from Pratt Community College and a grant-writing certificate from Fort Hays State University. She also has been employed as a certified nurse’s aide and does volunteer clerical work for the Macksville Fire Department.

“This new position at Sunflower is very special to me,” Grizzell said. “I love helping clients and the teamwork I share with staff members. They are amazing; it feels like a family here. I would encourage anyone to work for Sunflower.”

Shelby Zuniga, Sunflower executive director, said “Mandy is beyond awesome. She is multi-talented and will tackle anything, including running the forklift and baler. Mandy began to make changes months ago to help clean up recycling debris.

“It is obvious she loves working with clients and is willing to step and help her co-workers,” Zuniga added. “Mandy is a perfect fit for this job.”

RECYCLING CHANGES Sunflower Recycling can no longer accept non-corrugated chip board, which is the thinner, one-ply cardboard such as that used in breakfast cereal boxes.

“This is 100 percent because of the current market,” Zuniga explained. “If we would accept it, we would have to pay to dispose of it. We hope the market will get better later this year.”

The good news, she added, is that Sunflower now accepts No. 2 plastics such as laundry detergent and coffee containers.

Grizzell named to leadership position at Sunflower Diversified

Great Bend zoo makes upgrades to lion viewing window

Six students from Barton Community College in the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society were recognized as members of the PTK All-State Academic team during an award luncheon on Friday at the Courtyard by Marriott in Junction City.&nbsp;

Barton’s PTK honorees were Ariannah Heller of Easton and Phyne Pettis of Leavenworth, who represented the Fort Leavenworth campus, along with Bethany Cline and Jesica Haygood, both of Fort Riley, who represented the Fort Riley campus, and Joshua Ball of Great Bend and Charlie Seifert of Osborne, who represented the Barton County campus.

PTK is the international honor society for two-year colleges and symbolizes excellence in higher education.&nbsp; Students with a GPA of 3.5 or higher are invited to join PTK. The PTK group at Barton spends significant time sponsoring local events and volunteering to support others’ events.

The students had to go through an application process, and their applications were reviewed by an anonymous selection panel on their respective campuses. All six students will have a chance at being named to PTK’s All-USA Academic Team, which will be announced in the coming weeks.

Seifert is involved in several student groups, including serving as the PTK Phi Psi chapter president and president of the Community Service Organization, along with being a Hilltop Singer. She is also a member of various vocal and instrumental groups. She plans to transfer to Wichita State University to earn a degree in Business. She said she has been honored to be so involved during her time at Barton and especially enjoyed her PTK experience.

“Through Phi Theta Kappa, I have gotten more involved with the community and with other college students,” she said. “The events that we put on brought together many people and brightened their day just a little bit. It has shaped my college experience in ways I never imagined.”

While Cline has had a slightly different experience as a non-traditional student balancing school and her four children, she is thankful for the opportunities PTK has afforded her through her experience at Barton.

“Barton has helped me find myself again,” she said. “I was convinced that being a parent meant I had to give up my dreams of earning a college degree, but Barton proved me wrong. Barton has allowed me to follow my dreams while remaining a stay-at-home mom by offering classes 100 percent over Zoom.”

Cline will graduate with her associate degree from Barton in May. She plans to transfer to Upper Iowa University, where she will enroll in online courses to help her continue to balance family obligations and school in pursuit of a career in psychology.

Barton Community College students honored for academic achievements

Alfalfa weevil activity began early this year for our Oklahoma neighbors and it appears that degree day accumulation for Kansas alfalfa weevils is well ahead of normal for most locations in the state. Only northwest Kansas is at or slightly behind normal. There were reports of treatable infestations in south-central Kansas during the last week of March and getting towards the middle of April, fields are being treated, or close to being treated, in the central, southeast, and northeast regions of the state.

Alfalfa weevil degree days are a great way to estimate what might be going on in the field and serve as a useful tool to know when to time scouting. Alfalfa weevil eggs begin hatching after 300 degree days have accumulated (Table 2).  </figure>Alfalfa weevil activity began early this year for our Oklahoma neighbors and it appears that degree day accumulation for Kansas alfalfa weevils is well ahead of normal for most locations in the state. Only northwest Kansas is at or slightly behind normal. CAMPBELL: Monitor alfalfa weevils using degree days and scouting

The Facade Improvement Grant Program in Barton County continues to work its magic. Three more grants were approved during Wednesday's commission meeting. Mel Waite with Astra Business Solutions at 105 N. Main Street in Ellinwood, said the program has been contagious. 

"With us, the work that was done across the street from us at Two Chicks (and Some Old Bird) made us step up and look at our building more critically and say, 'Gosh, it's pretty dated,'" he told the commission. "It needs a little facelift."

Astra Business Solutions, formerly National Billing, shares its space with the Ellinwood Leader. Waite was awarded $20,000 and will contribute $15,113 to the project, which will include new windows, an awning, a door jam, and some exterior lighting. He plans to complement improvements being made to Gunn's Antiques &amp; Collectibles on the neighboring property.

He will contribute $24,230 to the project that will include new windows and a door."We've been trying to update things," Ehler said. "We've spent over $150,000 in the last two years upgrading signs and just different things inside the building. We're just looking for some help on the windows and doors. We have to be very careful because of it being a historical building."The commission also approved a $16,155 grant for INA Alert, 108 W. Santa Fe in Ellinwood. Nick and Laura Strecker will contribute $5,385 toward improvements that include new paint, replacing cracked siding, and reframing the doorway.
