The mini-basketball program in the Otis-Bison school district uses the
high school students to help teach the game of basketball to younger children.
Scott Goodheart remembers helping with the program, and very few people wanted
to referee the youth games so he always got stuck refereeing. That high
school assignment has turned into 17 years as a registered official and
recently being named the Director of Officials for the Kansas State High School
Activities Association. 
“With having a father that officiated and I didn’t play sports after high
school, officiating was a good transition for me to give back to the game,”
said Goodheart. 
Goodheart recalls his first varsity game as an official in Spearville, Kansas
against Greensburg (Kiowa County). 
“I bet if I were to go back and watch that game, I probably wasn’t very good,”
joked Goodheart. “Some people would probably argue that I’m not very good now.”

Goodheart has officiated volleyball, softball and basketball over the years and
has been the league commissioner for the Heart of the Plains League since 2016.
The Kansas State University graduate has spent the last few years being an
unofficial “spokesperson” for referees and working to mentor and recruit
officials in Kansas. 
“With this Director of Officials position through KSHSAA, it’s a lot of stuff I’ve
been doing before but now I get to put more focus on it being a fulltime job,”
said Goodheart. “Like I tell all officials, we’re the best recruiters for
officials. We need to be supporting these individuals.” 
Goodheart noted statistics show if referees stick around after their third
year, they are likely to work as an official for a long time. As KSHSAA's Director of Officials, Goodheart will be in charge of recruiting, mentoring,
training and retaining referees. The 2022-2023 school year was the first year
KSHSAA implemented the position. 
“The director of officials position is something surrounding states have done,
and now Kansas is getting the ball going with it,” said Goodheart. “States and
associations realize there is an importance for it. They see there is a need
because of the shortage of officials.” 
Goodheart believes promoting officiating to students in colleges across the
state is a good place to start the recruitment process and preaches the importance
of community support. 
“We want to show these kids that there is not a better way to make money on the
side as a part-time gig in college,” said Goodheart. “The other thing is
finding those employers that will give their employees the flexibility in allowing
people to officiate. Officiating is a community service. If there are no
officials for games, those kids aren’t playing games.” 
Goodheart was named the National Federation of State High School Associations
Boys Basketball Official of the Year in 2014, but reminds everyone that you do
not have to be an award-winning official to get started. 
“I kicked the biggest call of my life in Lyons, Kansas one night,” said
Goodheart. “There was a play that was a clear block, but I blew my whistle and had
my fist closed. I kicked the call, but we’re human and officials are going to
miss calls. That’s the beauty of officiating…it’s kind of an art how
you deal with it but it also uses your intelligence of the game.” 
Goodheart and his family will relocate to the Topeka area this summer, and he will officially
begin his KSHSAA position in July but will stay busy prior to that date with
officiating clinics and conferences.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Fun fact: on the bottom of all plastic containers, there is a triangle with a number in it. If that number happens to be a one or a two, Sunflower Diversified Services in Great Bend can now recycle it. Executive Director Shelby Zuniga said that's one of two big changes with the organization's recycling services.

"There are a lot of No. 2s that are colored plastics like the laundry detergent contains and coffee containers, things like that, that we were not able to take before that we can take now," she said.

The other big change involves cardboard. Sunflower took in a considerable amount of non-corrugated cardboard, like cereal boxes and beverage containers. With the close of a nearby mill and decreased prices in the market at large, Sunflower now accepts only corrugated cardboard.

"Back in the beginning of March, the Sonoco mill in Hutchinson closed down," Zuniga said. "Unexpectedly, one day, corporate came in and said you're done. That is where we took a majority of our material."

That closure has also impacted the city of Larned's recycling, which took its recycled materials to Sunflower for processing. Sunflower has switched to Quincy Recycling of Quincy, Ill., which handles materials from Colorado to the Appalachian Mountains. Zuniga said one new mill has opened on the east coast, with another opening in September. They will eventually work their way west to accept materials, and Zuniga hopes that will open the market back up for non-corrugated material.

"We're going to do everything we can to find a source to be able to move it again soon," she said. "But, we also want to remind people there are a lot of other items on the list that are recyclable that they might not be recycling currently."

Those items include tin cans, aluminum cans, and even metal pie plates. Sunflower staff asks that they can be rinsed prior to recycling. Sunflower Diversified makes changes to recyclable materials list

Hunting regulations are a balancing act between what is good for nature, hunters, and the economy. The Kansas Wildlife Parks and Commission will vote on a significant change at its April 27 meeting. Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Manager Jason Wagner said the biggest change involves turkeys.

"The commission is looking at a removal of the fall turkey season," he said. "Our turkey population has been in a slump for several years now, so we're looking at a series of turkey regulations and doing away with the fall turkey season."

A KDWP press release ahead of Thursday's noon meeting stated the number of fall turkey hunters statewide has decreased substantially over the past eight years. For the 2020 season, the fall turkey season dates were changed from Oct. 1 through Jan. 31, to Oct. 1 through Nov. 10. The organization estimates less than 500 birds are harvested each year, but the harvesting of hens, especially, can be difficult on turkey populations.

KDWP is also voting on a reduction of non-resident hunters. A draw system would reduce out-of-state hunters by approximately 25 percent for the spring turkey season.

"We're kind of a destination place for turkey hunters," Wagner said, "and we feel by reducing the non-resident numbers, that would alleviate some of the pressure on the turkeys."

Other changes for the spring would include reducing the turkey bag limit from two birds to one bird in Units 1 and 2 in northwest and northcentral Kansas. Unit 2 includes the northern three-quarters of Barton County, including the Bottoms. 

Wagner encouraged hunters with concerns about the proposed changes to contact the commission or attend Thursday's meeting. The meeting will be held at the Wyandotte County Historical Museum in Bonner Springs, but will also be available online through Zoom.

By GREG DOERING Kansas Farm Bureau &nbsp; Land is the foundation of agriculture, whether it’s the fertile, deep soils along river bottoms that nourish row crops or the rolling hills of grass waiting to be eaten by livestock. Everything a farmer or rancher does begins with the land. In Kansas, many farmers and ranchers have inherited at least a portion of their land from a family member and they have a strong desire to pass it on to the next generation. Tending the ground isn’t just an homage to their heritage, it’s also an equity stake in the future. It’s quite an honor to follow in the family footsteps, especially when those treads go back a century or more. But it’s also a burden to be the owner and caretaker of the family legacy. The expectations aren’t just preserving the land. Instead, the charge is to steadily improve it and leave it in a better condition. It’s almost a sacred oath landowners adhere to. Owning land is a long-term investment, and today’s farmers and ranchers use the latest research and implement the best practices to get the most out of their land while preserving its productive capacity for the future. They also understand at some point the technology they employ now will be as out of date as the moldboard plow and flood irrigation are today. They’ll implement incremental changes and seek out new ways to work the soil to benefit their bottom line and ensure a stronger foundation for the succeeding generation. Private property rights are crucial for farmers and ranchers to know they’ll benefit from all the work they put in to growing the safest, most wholesome food in the world. Owning land means having the privilege of deciding its best use. Thankfully, the government can’t prescribe crop rotations, order a rancher to only raise a specific breed of cattle or pass legislation that every barn needs to be painted red. At its core, private property is about more than just owning land – it's about having the freedom to create, innovate and invest in the future knowing you’ll reap the fruits of your own labor. Appeals to the common good are nice, but self-interest is more powerful at aligning individual incentives to benefit society at large. Farming and ranching are businesses, but their success or failure is not measured by quarter or fiscal year. The real scoreboard is every successive generation that can find new ways to make an old vocation better. Their ancestors instinctively understood land was not a short-term investment. Over the long haul, it’s a store of both value and values. Tending the soil and caring for livestock are required down payments for the reward of leaving a legacy. Libraries strengthening communities; Kansas celebrates special week

The Great Bend Recreation Commission will be hosting a free Stop ‘N Learn Session titled “Healthy Body, Healthy Brain” on Wednesday, April 26, from 12:00 – 1:00 pm at the Great Bend Rec Activity Center (2715 18th&nbsp;Street).&nbsp;

Healthy minds live in healthy bodies, which means taking care of your heart and cardiovascular system is the best way to protect your brain.&nbsp; This is primarily accomplished through eating a healthy diet and regular physical activity.&nbsp; The MIND diet is a proven way of eating that has protective brain benefits, including 10 brain-healthy foods but also 5 categories of foods that should be eaten with caution.&nbsp; This presentation will focus on ways to improve overall brain and body health and lower risks by adopting beneficial lifestyle behaviors.&nbsp; Monique Koerner, Cottonwood Extension Family and Community Wellness Agent, will be the speaker for the program.&nbsp;&nbsp;

GBRC: Stop 'N Learn - Healthy Body, Healthy Brain

In addition to carving out time for physical activity, including moderate intensity (walking, biking, etc.) and strengthening exercises, it is also important to just move more and sit less throughout your day. This is where “tiny habits” can have great impact. These tiny habits often feel easiest to accomplish because they happen “automatically” and don’t require much thought or planning. They are small bits of movement integrated into your day and have become habits.

This Tiny Habits approach, developed by BJ Fogg, Director of the Behavior Design Lab at Stanford University, can be summed up like this: If you want to create a new habit, make a plan to do it RIGHT AFTER an existing habit that you already do reliably. Here are steps to help you create tiny habits that work for you:

1. Think about tasks that you do consistently throughout a typical day. Perhaps you can relate to one of these: Sending emails and brushing your teeth.

2. Now, think about a small behavior (related to sitting less or moving more) that you would like to do more consistently throughout the day. Some examples: Stand up and stretch more often; improve your balance.

3. Finally, create your tiny habit: After I hit send on an email, I will stand up and stretch; while I brush my teeth, I will stand on one foot/leg to improve my balance.

Tiny habits, like these, work because you’re sequencing a new habit with something you already do reliably, building it into your typical routine without disruption. You can also think about adding and connecting activity, or other healthful behaviors, to other things you do consistently, like:

» Park further away from your destination.

» Stand up and walk around while talking on the phone, and during TV commercials.

» Lift light weights while on a Zoom call (with your camera off).

» Set an alarm to prompt you to get up and move a little every hour.

» Walk the stairs whenever possible, instead of taking an elevator.

» When eating out (and at home) have water with your meal instead of ordering a beverage.

» Keep a bowl of fruit on your desk or kitchen counter so it is ready for a quick snack.

KOERNER: Tiny habits

The Great Bend Brit Spaugh Zoo announced the newest exhibit animals are now out for the public to view. A pair of female bobcats, Amora and Hope, are out on exhibit next to the Grizzly bears.

Their area was blocked off for the past two weeks to all them to settle into their new home.

Both the bobcats came from the Milford Nature Center. They were taken to the Nature Center as cubs that had been orphaned in the wild and were unable to survive on their own.

Newest exhibit animals are on display at Great Bend zoo

The Barton Community College Library will host a launch party for Barton’s literary journal “Prairie Ink” followed by a general writing workshop from 6-8 p.m. April 27 in the Cavanaugh Room in the Barton Library.

The launch party will feature light refreshments, readings from contributors, and enlightened conversation.

After the launch party, the "Prairie Ink" editors will host the April Writing Workshop. Writers are invited to bring literary pieces to share, read others' work, and gain insight into the creative writing process.

English Instructor and “Prairie Ink” Editor Justin Brown welcomes all to join in this celebration of writing and creativity.

“Stories have been passed on from generation to generation both orally and in the written form,” he said. “The art defines humanity. Stories speak to us because they offer a glimpse of another’s inner world that we can relate to on a spiritual level simply because we are also human. Lasting stories stick with us because of the emotional connections we make, forever connecting our minds with the authors’ creations.”

Barton Community College to host launch party for 'Prairie Ink' journal

Twenty-plus years went into the making of Aaron Mull's Dolly Madison Murder documentary. The Great Bend High School graduate actually spent approximately 16 months filming, compiling interviews, editing, and searching for a vendor about the 21-year-old double homicide in Great Bend. The documentary premiered at the Crest Theater in March and is now <a href="https://tubitv.com/movies/100002605/the-dolly-madison-murders?utm_campaign=web-sharing&amp;fbclid=IwAR0VAF3mfk_0g53Y1tT6jMf5MfXAxhuvqHog8Rf3AhC4nGsoJINGKxzLVPg">available to stream free on Tubi. </a>

"It's been a long time coming," Mull said. "The project took essentially one year to make and four months to distribute. It feels good that it's finally out there on a large scale, and people beyond Great Bend and the Midwest can reach this story now."

Sunday, Mull also released his deep-dive podcast about the case and the documentary on YouTube.com. The podcast features interviews with parties who contacted Mull after the release of the documentary, including the wife of the truck driver who found the bodies of Mandi Alexander and Mary Drake inside the discount bakery on Sept. 2, 2002. A local hotel clerk also shares her memories of that night.

"I think the podcast, it's what a lot of these people have wanted to say for a long time, but they've either gone to law enforcement, allegedly, and not been taken seriously, or they just haven't felt the need to come forward until now," said Mull. "I'm excited about both being out at the same time because each of them has a different feel, for sure."

While Mull's documentary was a more narrative-based attempt to put the case back before the public, the podcast features more speculation and opinion on why and how things were handled by law enforcement in the days and years following the murders. With law enforcement remaining largely silent about the case, Mull was left with one side of the discussion but said finger-pointing was never the goal.

"We need law enforcement to solve this case," he said. "I'm just a guy with an internet connection. They're the people with the resources and hopefully, someday the time to actually put into this case and other cases like it."

In late March, the City of Great Bend announced that individuals or
businesses that wanted to advertise at the Great Bend Sports Complex now have
multiple opportunities with outfield signs, scoreboard naming and signs throughout
the facility. Any money raised from the sponsorships will go toward upgrades
and maintenance and the capital improvement fund for the Sports Complex. 

Interim
City Administrator Logan Burns said the deadline to submit a sponsorship has
passed, but the city will work with businesses if they are interested. "We still have spots open for that, but we have several businesses that have taken the opportunity," said Burns. "I think we expect some to trickle in after the deadline. We'll work them and see if we can get them up as quickly as we can." 
The outfield signs would place a 4' x 8' display along the outfield
fence. Great Bend was also offering scoreboard naming advertisements for

Barton County Sheriff's booking activity (4/24)

When Rick Ball moved to Great Bend in 1974 he was looking for a good way to exercise. Living close by, he eventually joined the golf
club, which has been known for years as Stoneridge Country Club. 

Along with
other investors, Ball eventually spent time in ownership of the 18-hole golf
course located on the northeast side of Great Bend on 24th Street. Although Stoneridge has had multiple owners since Ball and other investors sold the course in 2007, they “carried”
a financial note with the business.


The previous ownership failed to make mortgage payments for years, and after a
long, drawn-out court proceeding the new Club at Stoneridge owners took over ownership of the course last
December. Currently closed, Ball is now looking at what it will take to reopen
a once well-kept golf course. "It's going to take the involvement of former and new members; I'm not going to be able to do it by myself," said Ball. "We'll get others involved as soon as we get our arms around what all needs to be done." 
Ball said the court proceeding to foreclose on the course
dragged on for nearly two years.

There are over 120 acres throughout the golf course which has not been watered recently and has weeds taking over sections.
Ball noted the course needs to be addressed first but felt
like the clubhouse is also essential to make the venture successful. The clubhouse
features a bar and restaurant with a large kitchen, multiple banquet and
conference rooms, golf shop and a fitness room. Conversations have taken place with City of Great Bend officials on whether or not
the city wanted to get involved with the property to make the club into
a partial public course. Ball said he is open to continue those
conversations. "It would be nice to have the city involved somewhat," said Ball. "I'm a private businessman so I like to do things private, but there is a place for the city to participate also. If we don't go forward, I would consider this a negative for Great Bend if there is not a golf course for people to play. It helps bring businesses and people to town."

At the time, Ball does not have plans to keep or maintain the swimming pool at the
country club.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

"There are people that have offered to step up and help financially to get it done," said Ball. "We'll welcome that if we make the final decision to go forward."

What better way to celebrate National Library Week than by giving out books? Or maybe selling them for a small fee. The Great Bend Public Library has a full slate of activities planned for April 23-29 to celebrate the week. Marketing Outreach Manager Hannah Glass said that begins with a mini book sale that began Monday and runs all week.

"We're calling it a mini book sale because our typical book sale is just huge," she said. "It takes up our entire lower-level meeting room. This is much more scaled down from that."

Several tables of books will still be up for sale, with hardback books going for one dollar and everything else selling for 50 cents. Tuesday will be Story Time all day. Wednesday is reserved for book "tasting,'" where potential readers can peruse some information about a collection of books to determine if they are interested.

The biggest events will be held Thursday and Friday, with an all-day scavenger hunt for all ages on Thursday. As part of Library Celebration Day Friday, readers are encouraged to visit the library and video themselves discussing a favorite book. Those who do not wish to be videoed can still have their voice recorded.

"That will then be compiled and put on our YouTube channel," Glass said. "So if people want to come in and, basically, they're talking about a favorite book and recommending it, then we'll put that on our YouTube channel."

Tuesday's all-day storytime will include a special butterfly Story Time and a butterfly release. Activities begin at 10:30 a.m. that morning.

Great Bend library kicks off busy week with mini book sale

Twelve GBHS Forensics students traveled to Hutchinson High on April 21-22, 2023, to compete at the West Kansas District Qualifier. The event was a resounding success for the Panther Speech Team qualifying eight members for the National Speech and Debate Association National Tournament to be held in Phoenix, AZ, this June.

The competition was intense with some of the best forensics students from across the district vying for a chance to qualify for the national tournament. The GBHS Forensics Team rose to the challenge showcasing their skills and hard work to earn their tickets to nationals. Senior Maddix Pokorski won International Extemporaneous Speaking. Senior Xanna Smith took second place in Dramatic Interpretation with a piece about the Sandy Hook shooting. Senior Alondra Alvarez qualified in Oration with a persuasive speech about America’s gifted education program. Senior Eave Taylor and Junior Thomas Henrikson placed 2nd in Duo Interpretation. Their scene is an adaptation of Mark Twain’s, “Diary of Adam and Eve”. The team secured both national qualifiers in the Program of Oral Interpretation (POI) event. Sophomore Anna Bitter’s POI highlighted the problem of domestic violence while sophomore Darcy Feist shared a POI about body dysmorphic disorder. Feist also won the Oration event but has chosen to compete with her POI at nationals. Finally, freshman Quinton Heath qualified in Dramatic Interpretation with an anti-bullying piece about being true to one’s self.

Additionally, as a team, the squad brought home another first place sweepstakes trophy--winning in a landslide over stiff competition from all across Western Kansas. The number of sweepstakes points earned by the Panthers was nearly as much as the second and third place teams combined.

“We had a fantastic weekend at the West Kansas District National Qualifying Tournament,” Coach Kim Heath said, “We took 18 total entries, and 13 of them were in finals. Each of my students has displayed exceptional skill and determination; and we are thrilled that they have the opportunity to compete at the national level."

She finished as the first alternate in Dramatic Interpretation. Freshman Hannah Hopkins placed 7th in Domestic Extemporaneous speaking. Sophomore Reese King earned points for the team in Informative Speaking, and Hopkins and sophomore Ailey Williams competed in Duo Interpretation.The NSDA National Tournament is one of the most prestigious events in the world of forensics, attracting top talent from across the country. Nearly 6000 competitors from across the nation from over 2000 schools will come together for the five-day competition. The GBHS Forensics team's success this season is a testament to their hard work, and support of their families and peers.This accomplishment is also a reflection of the high-quality education and well-rounded curriculum that GBHS provides. Forensics is a challenging and competitive activity that requires a diverse set of skills, including critical thinking, research, communication, and performance. The students excelled not only because of their work in the forensics classroom, but also because of the skills that they have learned from all of their teachers at GBHS.Next up for Panther Squad is the prestigious Forensics Coaches Invitational to be held in Buhler on April 29. The students will use this as an opportunity to warm-up for the state championship tournament, which will take place during the first weekend of May.
