In April, Kansas joined 41 other states that have increased the legal
age for buying cigarettes, electronic cigarettes and other tobacco products to
21 years old. The House Bill signed by Governor Laura Kelly moves the legal age
from 18 to 21 to buy or be in possession of tobacco products. 

Barton County Public
Health Educator Katelyn Sigler said the new law will hopefully hinder teenagers from starting
the habit. "So once they can't start at 18, it hopefully won't be in the high school as much," said Sigler. "If they go to college, maybe it's not as cool anymore. Hopefully they don't even start it to begin with." 
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said tobacco use is the
leading cause of preventable death, disease and disability in the United States
and nine out of 10 adults who smoke started by age 18. 
Sigler spearheads the Chronic Disease Risk Reduction group within the Central
Kansas Partnership. The organization is a coalition that attempts to build a
vibrant culture of health through task forces. The “Kick the Habit” kickball tournament
in Great Bend was held in March with area youth competing against law
enforcement. Sigler said the tournament was also a chance to educate the youth

Director of Choral Activities Dr. Eric Foley said the Concert Choir and Community Choir members will perform selections that originate from either Kansas composers or arrangers, all of them living.

“Audience members may know some of these selections from their past in either school groups while they were in music classes in elementary through high school or growing up and listening to them on the radio,” he said. “One of our arrangers actually grew up here in Great Bend and actively arranges music for schools and professional ensembles around the world. There will be something for everyone in addition to highlighting our own musicians that hail from Kansas.”

Barton Music Department to present 'Kansas Connection' concert

Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services division of the Kansas Department of Labor and the Bureau of Labor Statistics show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 2.9% in March. This is unchanged from 2.9% in February and an increase from 2.4% in March 2022.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment decreased by 2,200 from February. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs decreased by 2,900 over the month, while government increased by 700.

The Barton County jobless rate fell from 3.4 percent in February to 3 percent in March. Most counties in the region also saw a slight drop in the unemployment rate. In western Kansas, Trego County's unemployment was the highest jumping from 3.5 percent in February to 4 percent in March.

Since March 2022 Kansas' seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 37,100. This change is due to an increase of 33,200 private sector jobs and an increase of 3,900 government jobs.

The April 2023 Labor Report will be released on Friday, May 19.

United Way of Central Kansas hosted the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce Coffee on April 27 at Marmie Ford to announce and thank the Pacesetters.

May is Mental Health awareness month and the past few years have been extremely difficult to navigate. It has never been more important to talk about stress and mental strain each one of us may be experiencing. Sustained higher levels of stress can lead to depression, anxiety, fatigue, and other triggers that cause a greater propensity for attempting suicide. The stigma of mental health can also make it difficult for people to feel that they can reach out for support. There are a number of helpful sources available for people in need and I will highlight those today.

The National Suicide helpline is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week by calling or texting “988”. Support services are confidential and free of charge. This helpline is now a streamlined version of the suicide hotline and involves the ability to call and talk with someone, or text the number and use the text version if you do not want to talk.

Local resources are also available. In the Great Bend area, the Center for Counseling and Consultation can be reached on their confidential crisis line 24 hours a day, seven days a week at 800-875-2544 or 620-792-2544 as well as at their website&nbsp;<a href="https://thecentergb.org/" target="_blank">https://thecentergb.org</a>. BOOR: Mental Health Awareness Month approaching

The numbers are preliminary. A lot will change over the next
couple of months, but Barton Community College Vice President of Administration
Mark Dean presented the college’s fiscal year 2024 preliminary budget to the
Board of Trustees Tuesday. Dean showed a projected $2.2 million loss for the
upcoming budget. 

While the college is expected to receive additional funds in
tuition and taxes, the state aid portion of Barton’s revenue is down more than
a $1 million. Dean said a new, fully-funded state formula is not calculated in the budget yet. 
 "The governor signed the budget bill," said Dean. "We're still not 100-percent clear what is all going to be included in there. I anticipate that will go up as long as nothing negative changes with the bill. That should go up considerably." 
 
Barton is expected to shell out just shy of $19 million in salaries for the
2024 fiscal year, which is a decrease of $450,000 from the current school year.
Dean said many long-time employees retired which dropped that number along with
19 current open positions and no wage adjustment has been calculated in the
figure yet.

Each year, several departments request additional strategic plan
items and this year there were more than $18 million in requests. Dean stated
some wishes will be approved and others will not and last year there was less
than $1 million approved in additional requests. 
 "Hopefully, we'll be able to fund some of that, but we need to know exactly where our revenue is," said Dean. "I'll know more at this time next month once we're 100-percent sure what the state budget is going to do." 
 
When Dean presented last spring at approximately the same time, he showed a
$1.8 million deficit for the 2023 budget. He came back in June 2023 with the
deficit at $943,000.

Barton CC early $2.2 million deficit for ’24 budget expected to drop

In 2016, the Central Kansas Catbackers created a scholarship program for local students that plan to attend Kansas State University as freshmen in the fall. The committee awards 5 - $1,000 scholarships each year.&nbsp;

The following five recipients of the 2023-2024 Central Kansas Catbacker Scholarship are:

● August Siefkes graduate of Great Bend High School. August is the daughter of Jon and Andrea Siefkes. August will pursue a degree in Music Performance and a minor in business with plans to enter the music industry.

● Aubrey Smith graduate of Great Bend High School. Aubrey is the daughter of Jared and Amber Smith. Aubrey will pursue a degree in Biology with plans to enter the medical field.

● Kevin Gonzalez graduate of Great Bend High School. Kevin is the son of Zusseth Pinillo. Kevin will pursue a degree in BioMedical Engineering with plans to enter the health industry.

● Ryan Kuckelman graduate of Macksville High School. Ryan is the son of Jeff and Jan Kuckelman. Ryan will pursue a degree in Business Marketing.

● Joshua Hildebrand graduate of Stafford High School. Joshua is the son of Jason &amp; Carrie Hildebrand. Joshua will pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering with plans to enter the Air Force.

Central KS Catbackers awards scholarships to area students

A motion will be presented to the Great Bend City Council at next Monday’s
meeting to name the next City Administrator. 
There were 25 applicants for the city administrator job after it became
available with Kendal Francis’ resignation in early January. Three finalists
were selected for extended interviews. 
Logan Burns, assistant administrator, has been serving as interim administrator
since last December. Strategic Government Resources (SGR) was hired for $18,000
to handle the search for the next administrator. Burns has previously stated he
expects a June start date for the chosen candidate. 
The city council meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. this upcoming Monday at City
Hall. A motion will be presented to the governing body to consent to Mayor Cody
Schmidt’s appointment of the city administrator.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

The USD 428 Board of Education approved the appointment of two USD 428 administrators at their luncheon meeting held on Wednesday, April 26, at Riley Elementary.

JoAnn Blevins will be the next Director of Teaching and Learning for Great Bend Public Schools, USD 428. Blevins has worked in the district for 24 years, serving as a teacher, instructional coach, principal at Riley Elementary, and currently as principal at Eisenhower Elementary. Blevins will transition to her new role at the District Education Center on July 1, 2023.

Myron Ellegood has been appointed as the principal of Great Bend Middle School. Ellegood has been the assistant principal and athletic director for GBMS since 2014. Ellegood will assume his new position at the start of the 2023-2024 school year.

“We had an outstanding pool of applicants, both internal and external, for these positions,” said Khris Thexton, superintendent for USD 428. “These two are inherently familiar with the goals of our district and I’m&nbsp;excited to see the positive momentum and outcomes both Mrs. Bleivns and Mr. Ellegood will continue to drive for our students, families, and community.”

On Jan. 9, 2023, the USD 112 Central Plains Board of Education voted 5-2 to close Wilson High School at the close of the 2022-23 school year. Some Wilson residents continue to battle that decision. Last October, the Wilson High School Future Committee was formed in an effort to keep the school open. Member Michael Kratky said the group is planning to file a petition that could eliminate the district altogether.

"We have plenty of signatures already from people who are in favor of the petition," he said. "We will proceed with the petition after May 1. We gave the board an opportunity to give us a one-year extension for 2023-24, so we can work out the solutions for our school. If not, then we're going to proceed with the disorganization petition."

Per Kansas statute 72-635, whenever a disorganization petition is filed with the appropriate number of signatures, the matter shall be put on a ballot before all voters in the district. If a majority of voters approve the disorganization, the matter goes to the Kansas State Board of Education.

"There's a possibility, with disorganization, we could become a sub-district of another district, which means we would manage our own funding and our own expenses," Kratky said. "We feel we have options either way, with the one-year extension or the disorganization. As far as the disorganization, we don't really have anything to lose. We have everything to gain."

Kratky and a group of others have testified before the Kansas Legislature on multiple occasions. House Bill 2138 pertaining to school closings passed the legislature but, with several other items attached in the bill, was vetoed by Gov. Laura Kelly. The group now gives the USD 112 BOE until May 1 to extend Wilson High's life for another year, or the petition will be filed in Ellsworth County, the home county of the district that spans 548 square miles in parts of five counties.

"This is historical for Kansas because there has never been a disorganization if it goes to that," Kratky said. "It's up to the 112 Board. They've been given a choice, on our part, to give us a one-year extension and work through the process of what we need to get done to save our 7-12."

In his March 22 testimony before the Kansas House Committee on Education, Kratky detailed the history of WHS, which was founded in 1887, and remained a single-school district until consolidation into USD 328 with Holyrood, Bushton, and Lorraine in 1966. In 2010, USD 354 Claflin joined the consolidation, which became USD 112 Central Plains.

Kratky testified that in February, the board of education stated by consensus it would delay the Wilson closure if a transfer to another district could be negotiated. He said the committee has been in talks with other districts, but the board reversed its decision by voting 5-2 against any extension.

Roberta Meier, who has taught for 36 years, has expressed concerns about the lack of a district-wide staff meeting to discuss how the closure would impact staff, directly and indirectly, with unemployment and retirement benefits possibly on the line. She's also expressed concern about the lack of a transition plan for the Wilson High students when the school closes.

Per statute, a petition to disorganization cannot be put on the ballot between Jan. 1 and July 1 of any year. Primary elections in Kansas are scheduled for Aug. 1.

Strong Kansas winds do not provide many favors. That is especially true for landfill staff. As part of a 2009 resolution, the Barton County Landfill closes when wind speeds are sustained at 30 miles per hour, gust above 35 miles per hour, before a forecasted wind of at least 40 miles per hour, or when the National Weather Service issues a "high wind" warning for the area.

The landfill does not accept trash on those days, nor does it stop working. Solid Waste Director Jennifer Hamby said staff can do a few things to prevent trash from blowing around, including using an alternative daily cover machine.

"It sprays a coat of, it's almost kind of like cement; it's a paper-and-water mixture," she said. "We spray a real thick layer over the trash, and that will hold it down. We actually do that every single day at the end of the night. If it's really windy, we may just go ahead and cover it with a six-inch layer of dirt."

For any litter that escapes the cover, there's yet another option to keep the area clean: litter screens.

"They're really tall screens that we set up depending on where the wind blows," Hamby said. "We can take the blade of the compactor, lift them, and just move them around. If the winds are out of the south, we'll put them on the north end, and that should catch a lot of the trash, and vice versa."

The trash never sleeps, and Hamby said the days after a shutdown can be quite hectic with the various trash haulers playing catch-up. Hamby also reminded citizens that it is state regulation to secure and cover personal trash loads on their way to the landfill.

deceased victim after responding to a structure fire last week. Fire crews responded
to the report of a shed on fire in the 200 block of Heizer Street just after 3
p.m. Thursday, April 20. 
Crews found a small outbuilding fully involved in fire and made a knockdown of
the fire. Initiating an interior search, crews located the deceased victim. 
The fire is accidental in nature and was investigated by the Great Bend Fire
Department, State Fire Marshal and detectives from the Great Bend Police
Department.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

A popular guide to gardening in Kansas has undergone a major makeover that one of its authors said helps to “better reflect the needs and experiences of a wide range of Kansas gardeners, especially our newest gardeners.”

An updated version of the Kansas Garden Guide – which in 2022 was downloaded 35,931 times, or about 100 times a day – will be available to order by early May from the K-State Research and Extension bookstore.

The guide already is available to view online in its entirety. Viewers can print pages that relate to specific information.

The updated guide is chalked full of information from new things learned about growing plants in Kansas and understanding the science of soils, plants, and microorganisms better.

The updated publication reflects changes in practices, as well. Also, the way that people think about and approach gardening changes over time. Gardens today are usually smaller and there are many new gardeners that have started gardening over the past several years.

The new guide, has expanded to 202 pages complete with full-color pictures and illustrations. The Kansas Garden Guide – originally printed in the early 1980s -- was last printed in 2010, and included 76 full color pages.

· Planting and maintaining a garden, including watering, fertilizing and other best practices.

· Fall gardens and extending the garden season.

· Managing insect pests and identifying plant diseases and environmental stressors.

· Taking advantage of pollinators and beneficial insects.

· Growing herbs, including a wider variety of herbs.

 </figure>A popular guide to gardening in Kansas has undergone a major makeover that one of its authors said helps to “better reflect the needs and experiences of a wide range of Kansas gardeners, especially our newest gardeners.”An updated version of the Kansas Garden Guide – which in 2022 was downloaded 35,931 times, or about 100 times a day – will be available to order by early May from the K-State Research and Extension bookstore.The guide already is available to view online in its entirety. Viewers can print pages that relate to specific information.The updated guide is chalked full of information from new things learned about growing plants in Kansas and understanding the science of soils, plants, and microorganisms better.The updated publication reflects changes in practices, as well. Also, the way that people think about and approach gardening changes over time. Gardens today are usually smaller and there are many new gardeners that have started gardening over the past several years.The new guide, has expanded to 202 pages complete with full-color pictures and illustrations. CAMPBELL: K-State unveils expanded Kansas Garden Guide

Riley Elementary Principal Beth Rein gets an 'A' for creativity. She turned the interactive web-based game Kahoot! into her presentation before the USD 428 Great Bend Board of Education during Wednesday's luncheon. The answer to her first question demonstrated how two problematic areas for Riley staff are how academic data can be defeating, and figuring out which data points to focus on.

"There is just so much data," Rein said. "We can look at attendance; we can look at discipline. We give FastBridge benchmarking tests to preschool four-year-olds all the way through sixth grade. Those kids who don't do well, we do progress monitoring."

The benchmarking tests show teachers where students need more work. Riley instructors use state assessments and state assessment interim tests completed in September, December, and February to chart progress.

One giant goal of USD 428 is to get more kids reading. Fourteen Riley educators, including nine classroom teachers, are participating in the Science of Reading LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) program. The group met a ninth time this year Wednesday to learn how to become literacy and language experts in the science of reading. Assistant Superintendent Tricia Reiser commended the group.

"This is a great initiative," she said. "I'm really proud of Riley teachers for embracing this because it's work. All of the cohort that is participating will do volume two next year, and we're starting another cohort for our district as well. Our focus at 428 is to empower our teachers to be teachers of reading."

Rein had plenty of good news to report. Riley boasts a 95-percent K-6 attendance record. Eighteen students recently passed the Kansas English Language Proficiency Assessment, part of the federal elementary and secondary legislation for English learners that measures language proficiency in listening, reading, writing, and speaking. With a passing mark, those students will never have to take the assessment again. And Riley is the home of the Barton County Spelling Bee Champion Christian Garcia. The fifth-grader recently placed 37th out of 86 competitors at the state competition in Wichita.

Rein did express concern about the state of the school's playground equipment. Some of the equipment is 25-plus years old, and competitive soccer games during recess are played on sand.

Riley principal gives positive report to Great Bend BOE

There is no eye in the sky, but there is an ‘electronic eye’ when it
comes to Great Bend’s new automated water meter reading system. As installation
of the $2.46 million project continues throughout town, the Automated Meter
Infrastructure on the already-installed meters can notify Great Bend’s Utility
Superintendent if any meter has usage for 24 hours or more. 

Public Works
Director Jason Cauley said the ability to recognize a leak was a contributing
factor in the utility upgrade. "Just to remind everybody, these meters are so sensitive they will register a single drip," said Cauley. "That drip will send the notification. We know enough to determine there is a problem." 
Cauley said Zenner USA is still working in Cycle 1 and Cycle 2 of the
residential areas, installing antennas to existing water meters to switch over
to the new system. The digital program sends the meter reading to the water
department’s billing office, eliminating the need for staff members to walk
around town gathering the readings. "The main productivity side of it is easy," said Cauley. "It's the tediousness. Being out there every day for eight hours and doing the same thing. It's the frustrations of trying to make it through an easement, 100-degree weather or single-digit weather. It takes a toll on your mindset." 
Cauley said there may be some disruptions in the early months of the new system,
but the days of estimated meter readings will be falling by the wayside.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

There are approximately 6,500 commercial and residential water meters in the city’s service area.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Great Bend’s capability to now calculate water usage by the drip

Richard E. "Coach" Towers, 92, of Manhattan, passed away on Sunday, April 23rd, 2023, at his home following complications from Multiple Myeloma. He was a retired Athletic Director and Coach.

Richard Ephraim Towers was born in Kansas City, KS on February 10, 1931, the son of the late Mabel Daisy (Stitt) and Guy McKinley Towers. He and Wann Harwood of Manhattan, KS were married on August 9, 1953, in Manhattan at Danforth Chapel. Dick was raised in Olathe, Kansas graduating from Olathe High School in 1949. He was a football and track standout at Kansas State University, receiving bachelor's and master’s degrees in education and administration.

Helping others was a driving force for Coach Towers. He was known for his great storytelling, being the “activities director” for many family gatherings, leading the birthday song at his Vista Coffee Group, and cheering on his golf and fishing buddies. He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Manhattan.

As an athlete his teammates voted him ”Most Inspirational Player." As a football coach his peers selected him Coach of the Year at the High School, Junior College, and NCAA Division 1 district level.

ROTC took him to Fort Leonard Wood, MO, after graduation from Kansas State. He then began his football coaching career, with stops at Leavenworth High School and Manhattan High School. His 1961 Manhattan High school team was crowned state champions, and these players continue to maintain a special relationship to this day.

His college coaching career took him from KSU to Southern Illinois University and finally Duke University. Athletic administration brought him back to Kansas in 1977 where Dick was assistant superintendent of schools and athletic director in Great Bend. Following that, he returned to his alma mater as athletic director and was instrumental in landing KSU’s first bowl game bid. He finished his career at Iowa State University in athletic administration.

After retirement he and his son Rick developed Sand Creek Self Storage east of Manhattan. During this period Dick was able to focus on enjoying life with his wife Wann, enjoying many fantastic trips, family vacations, fishing adventures and innumerable rounds of golf.

In 1995, Dick won the Senior Golf Championship at Indian Hills Country Club in Mission Hills, Kansas. It was one of his many golfing accomplishments along with a few holes in one.

He valued the wonderful relationship he had with his sisters, children and their spouses, grandchildren, great grandchildren, along with his nieces and nephews. Dick cherished his friendships with colleagues, classmates and former players.

Dick is survived by his wife of 69 years, Wann, two daughters, Betsy (Larry) Shapiro, of Morristown, NJ; Donna Hemingway, of West Branch, Iowa; son, Rick (Sheila)Towers, of Rossville; two sisters, Lillian Partis, of Ottawa, KS; Janiece Towers, of Manhattan; also surviving are seven grandchildren, Becky (Chris) Radich, Jessie Shapiro, Jon Hemingway, Emily (DoHun) Kim, David Towers, Austin (Mandy) Floersch and Emmy (Jason) Sedlacek; and nine great grandchildren. Coach Towers is preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Louise Hyer and LaVaun Miller; his brother, Charles Towers, and his son-in-law Paul Hemingway and grandson Loren Hemingway.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 am until the memorial service begins at 11:00 AM on Saturday, April 29th, at the First Presbyterian Church. 800 Leavenworth St, with Rev Jason Pittman officiating. Following the service all are invited to attend a tailgate lunch party and storytelling time at the Presby Place located at the church. The service will be streaming live on YouTube @firstpresmanhattan

Former Great Bend athletic director Towers passes away at 92

On Tuesday, April 25 at approximately 10:27 p.m., the Barton County
Sheriff’s Office responded to a two-vehicle collision on U.S. Highway 56 at
mile post 215, in Ellinwood city limits. 
Investigation shows a 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier, driven by Michael Scheuerman of
Ellinwood was traveling westbound on U.S. 56. A 2016 Kenworth tractor trailer,
driven by Austin McAlonan of Hays, was traveling eastbound on U.S. 56. 
The Cavalier went left of the center line and entered into the eastbound lane.
The front of the Cavalier struck the front of the Kenworth trailer. The
Kenworth then left the roadway on the south side and struck a power pole. 
Scheuerman sustained fatal injuries. McAlonan was not injured. The highway was
closed for several hours.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Harbor Freight Tools to 'officially' open Great Bend store May 13

During a presentation at Tuesday’s Barton Community College Board of
Trustees meeting, Child Development Center (CDC) Director Larissa Graham told
the board the daycare facility on campus operates with a five-year average
annual loss of $120,745. That deficit each year is down from the last time
Graham reported to the board in January 2021 when the five-year average was $139,000.


The Child Development Center can provide daycare service for up to 60 children,
and for Trustees Chairman Mike Johnson that service to the community is worth
the annual loss. "As a board, we understand the issues that go with the service this provides to the community, students and faculty," said Johnson. "We know it's not a moneymaker by any means, but we all agree it's a necessary service for the community, but more importantly for the faculty and staff that is here." 
Barton’s CDC is currently operating with 47 children. Of those 47 children, 17
come from parents that are staff or faculty at Barton and 30 from other
community members.

Great Bend Economic Development has helped facilitate a $1.6
million group daycare in Great Bend that will serve up to 59 children. Graham serves
on the Advancing Barton County Childcare Board, in charge of organizing the new
daycare initiative. Graham did not expect the new daycare, yet to break ground,
to have a huge impact on the college’s program.

🎧Barton college daycare not a moneymaker but serves a need

The mini-basketball program in the Otis-Bison school district uses the
high school students to help teach the game of basketball to younger children.
Scott Goodheart remembers helping with the program, and very few people wanted
to referee the youth games so he always got stuck refereeing. That high
school assignment has turned into 17 years as a registered official and
recently being named the Director of Officials for the Kansas State High School
Activities Association. 
“With having a father that officiated and I didn’t play sports after high
school, officiating was a good transition for me to give back to the game,”
said Goodheart. 
Goodheart recalls his first varsity game as an official in Spearville, Kansas
against Greensburg (Kiowa County). 
“I bet if I were to go back and watch that game, I probably wasn’t very good,”
joked Goodheart. “Some people would probably argue that I’m not very good now.”

Goodheart has officiated volleyball, softball and basketball over the years and
has been the league commissioner for the Heart of the Plains League since 2016.
The Kansas State University graduate has spent the last few years being an
unofficial “spokesperson” for referees and working to mentor and recruit
officials in Kansas. 
“With this Director of Officials position through KSHSAA, it’s a lot of stuff I’ve
been doing before but now I get to put more focus on it being a fulltime job,”
said Goodheart. “Like I tell all officials, we’re the best recruiters for
officials. We need to be supporting these individuals.” 
Goodheart noted statistics show if referees stick around after their third
year, they are likely to work as an official for a long time. As KSHSAA's Director of Officials, Goodheart will be in charge of recruiting, mentoring,
training and retaining referees. The 2022-2023 school year was the first year
KSHSAA implemented the position. 
“The director of officials position is something surrounding states have done,
and now Kansas is getting the ball going with it,” said Goodheart. “States and
associations realize there is an importance for it. They see there is a need
because of the shortage of officials.” 
Goodheart believes promoting officiating to students in colleges across the
state is a good place to start the recruitment process and preaches the importance
of community support. 
“We want to show these kids that there is not a better way to make money on the
side as a part-time gig in college,” said Goodheart. “The other thing is
finding those employers that will give their employees the flexibility in allowing
people to officiate. Officiating is a community service. If there are no
officials for games, those kids aren’t playing games.” 
Goodheart was named the National Federation of State High School Associations
Boys Basketball Official of the Year in 2014, but reminds everyone that you do
not have to be an award-winning official to get started. 
“I kicked the biggest call of my life in Lyons, Kansas one night,” said
Goodheart. “There was a play that was a clear block, but I blew my whistle and had
my fist closed. I kicked the call, but we’re human and officials are going to
miss calls. That’s the beauty of officiating…it’s kind of an art how
you deal with it but it also uses your intelligence of the game.” 
Goodheart and his family will relocate to the Topeka area this summer, and he will officially
begin his KSHSAA position in July but will stay busy prior to that date with
officiating clinics and conferences.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;
