Carol Jenkner, research coordinator at the Barton County Historical Society, will give the monthly program at 7 p.m., Monday, June 22, in the Ray Schulz Research Library at the historical village. The program is free to members and those under 16, and $5 for those who are not members of the historical society.  Memberships may be purchased that night at the door or anytime during business hours.

Jenkner will speak about samplers, those hand-stitched examples of needlework skill and a girl’s educational attributes. She will tell how samplers were used as educational tools at a time when girls did not regularly attend school.  The samplers were used to prepare them for their lives as housewives and mothers. Additionally, Jenkner will be sharing some samplers from her personal collection dating from 1797 into the late 1880s. Join us and learn what the term “hornbook” means.

The Barton County Historical Society is located at 85 S. Highway 281, Great Bend, just south of the Arkansas River bridge.  The society is open Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, 1-5 p.m.  The historical society is closed on Monday.
