Barton Co. residents - 2nd half tax payments due May 10

I love getting to highlight all of the different projects that 4-H offers! While livestock is usually the first thing that people think of, I have highlighted eighteen projects over the last few weeks and, while several have been related to agriculture, none have been our livestock projects.

This week I am starting off with the Rabbit project! Rabbits are a great small animal project and help teach animal science and responsibility as well as a multitude of specific features of different breeds, and grooming and showmanship. I had no idea there were so many types of rabbits! Additionally, youth can experience learning to judge rabbits.

Another small species project is poultry. While we generally think of chickens, the poultry project can include turkeys, geese, and ducks. Youth also have the opportunity to learn about other types of poultry, about eggs and candling, and can experience learning to poultry judge.

Nearly everyone has had a pet at some point and learning responsibility for feeding and care is a big deal! The Pet project lets 4-H youth explore different types of pets and how to care for a variety from fish to cats. Youth learn about potential hazards for pets in the home, about nutritional needs, and about diseases and symptoms. This is a great project for kids who want to explore the first steps of veterinary science.

Like any animal, the more that rabbits, poultry, and most pets are handled, the easier it is for youth to showcase their animal and what they have learned while gaining confidence and practicing communication skills in talking to a judge.

BERAN: What 4-H has to offer

Veterans who discover they may need mental-health services but aren’t sure where to turn, should consider calling or stopping in at The Center for Counseling &amp; Consultation, said Julie Kramp, executive director.

“We have always welcomed veterans but our recent specialized training has given us more tools to help those who are struggling,” Kramp said. “A large majority of The Center’s staff recently attended in-person training that focused on veterans; staff members who couldn’t attend viewed the training online.”

Esther Granados of the Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center in Wichita presented the training that “enhances our ability to serve current and former military members,” Kramp said. “Esther lost a brother who was a veteran to suicide, which gives her special insight.

“She absolutely knows first-hand the risks to veterans’ mental health and is as committed as we are to finding the resources that can help.”

Granados is a licensed social worker and clinical addiction counselor.

The specialized training, which was presented to all departments at The Center, is called VA S.A.V.E. The acronym stands for:

· S - Signs of suicidal thinking should be recognized.

· A - Ask the most important question of all: Are you thinking of killing yourself?

· V - Validate the veteran’s experience.

· E - Encourage treatment and Expedite getting help.

“We have had training designed for veterans in the past but this in-person, real-time exchange took us to the next level,” Kramp said. “We now have better connections with veterans’ hospitals and medical clinics and are more prepared to help veterans find the best resources for their individual circumstances.”

Kramp noted that one highlight of the session was learning that The Center staff is encouraged to ask the “big question” – the one about having suicidal thoughts.

“This may seem counterintuitive to people who think the subject of suicide shouldn’t even be mentioned,” Kramp commented. “They believe there might be a more delicate approach, such as ‘are you thinking of hurting yourself?’

“But we have learned that veterans appreciate people being candid with them. This is the only way to find the appropriate resources – whether they are suicidal or not suicidal.”

Veterans who don’t know if they qualify for benefits also are encouraged to contact The Center. “We can connect them to someone who can answer that question,” Kramp explained.

The enhanced training is part of The Center’s plan to pre-certify as a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic. A CCBHC is a multi-dimensional program that will be provided through The Center. Full certification will happen in July 2024.

The Center in Great Bend receives training, enhances veterans’ services

NESS COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating reports of oilfield pipe being stolen from leases in Ness County, according to the sheriff's office.

 Theft from oil leases is very easy, due to the rural access and oilfield pipe is not traceable. However, these cases are not unsolvable, according to the sheriff's office.

Sheriff investigating oilfield pipe thefts

For Eric Wall, director of sales at Grain Craft, milling in McPherson is a family tradition — as is active involvement in the Home Baking Association, a non-profit organization that promotes increased home baking.

“Any company that has a presence in the baking aisle should be a part of the HBA because the vision is to grow the practice of home baking, whether you sell flour, sugar, yeast, any kind of ingredient, even baking utensils, pans or baking mats,” Wall said, who is currently serving his second term as HBA president. “It makes sense for a company like Grain Craft to be a member because we want to have the association continue to teach and educate and keep people baking at home. So that’s why we’ve stayed involved for all these years.”

While Wall’s family were not charter members of the HBA, their membership dates to the 1960s, originally through their family-owned Wall-Rogalsky Milling Co, in McPherson. Wall joined the family business after he graduated from Kansas State University in 1982 with a degree in agricultural economics. The company was sold to Cereal Food Processors in 2000, a company that was acquired by Milner/Pendleton in 2014. The acquisition resulted in the creation of a new company — Grain Craft — now the largest independent flour miller in the nation.

Grain Craft’s network of mills supplies bagged and bulk flour to customers from coast to coast, including food service, pizza and tortilla industries and grocery stores. McPherson, where Wall continues to work, is Grain Craft’s primary small packaging mill, supplying two to 50-pound sacks, primarily for retail.

This strong connection to retail sales makes the HBA an ideal organization for Grain Craft since the HBA provides resources to anyone who teaches or fosters home baking skills and promotes the benefits of baking. In 2022, the HBA reached 7.2 million educators and consumers.

The HBA recently sponsored a three-day event with the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), a national career and technical student organization for young people in family and consumer sciences in public and private schools. The 2023 Baking and Milling Industry Immersion brought students and teachers to Manhattan, Kansas, to tour local bakeries, flour mills and the Kansas Wheat Innovation Center. The KWIC is also home to the Grain Craft Innovation Lab, a space focused on quality and product performance analysis.

“FCCLA is trying to build these kids to be the next generation of leaders, and FCCLA has been a longtime partner with the HBA,” Wall said. “We wanted to do something like this to get their students and teachers to understand that there are some really nice opportunities in the baking and milling industries.”

Wall credited Charlene Patton, HBA executive director, and Sharon Davis, longtime HBA family and consumer sciences educator, as integral reasons why the HBA continues to succeed in their mission of promoting home baking through activities like the recent FCCLA event.

He also wants wheat farmers to know the connection between families who purchased baking ingredients, retailers and milling companies like Grain Craft flows directly back to Kansas farms.

“We want people to bake at home. They’ll buy flour, which is made from the farmers’ wheat,” Wall said. “Within a 100-mile radius, we source and grind a lot of wheat each year. So, if people continue to bake at home, that only helps provide the farmer with a good market for their wheat.”

Eagle Radio's News Week in Review

News broke last Saturday evening that Great Bend's Paige Wagner, now a freshman at Wichita State University, won the Intercollegiate Singles Championships (ISC) national bowling title. Those who could not make the drive to Las Vegas to watch the competition live had the opportunity to watch the national broadcast on CBS Sports Tuesday evening. Wagner had to battle through the dreaded 7-10 split late in the championship match to secure her title.

"I was a little bit more nervous after that, but not too nervous," she said. "I just knew I had to continue to do my best like I had previously, then just see what happens after that."

Wagner missed both pins on that split in the eighth frame, but her four strikes to open the championship helped her to a 46-pin lead en route to a 211-203 win against Maryville University's (Mo.) Anny Maxwell.

Wagner was one of 24 finalists in the championship bracket. She placed second at a sectional competition in Dallas to qualify for the national tournament. In Las Vegas, each bowler rolled six games to determine bracket seeding. Wagner emerged as the No. 8 seed with a first-round bye.

In round two of the championship bracket, Wagner rolled a 709 series to beat the No. 24 seed 709-534. That was one of just three 700 series in the bracket. Wagner advanced past the quarterfinals with a 668-603 win against the No. 16 seed from Davenport University (Mich.).

Things got a little more serious for the semifinals. CBS began filming for its later broadcast during the semifinal stage. The final group of bowlers also included reigning national champion Chloe Skurzynski, who rolled an 805 series in round two of the bracket.

"After the first five frames, there was a commercial break in between, but other than that, we didn't really have any other pauses," Wagner said. "Everything stayed the same. I just talked to my coach during that time. It was only about 15 seconds, so it wasn't too long."

Wagner, riding four-straight strikes, was even against Savannah College of Art and Design's (Ga.) No. 12 seed Lara Kurt when her first ball in the ninth frame resulted in a 2-4-10 split. Wagner converted the spare, but fouled on her final shot in the 10th frame. The error cost her nine crucial pins.

"I was nervous after that because I knew she had a chance of beating me," Wagner said. "I was just back there with my coach, and we were watching. She missed her spare, and I was very shocked about that."

Kurt needed a spare and nine pins to beat Wagner and advance to the finals. She left the seven-pin on her first ball, then threw a gutter ball while trying to hit the pin in the left corner. That sealed Wagner's 235-226 win.

The national title was a dream come true for Wagner, who won a pair of regional titles at Great Bend High School and finished as state runner-up her junior year with a 289 game that still stands as a single-game record at GBHS.

"Wichita State is the only school I ever looked at to go to. I never looked at any other school. To be able to compete with them and win a national championship for them, it's very exciting."

The error cost her nine crucial pins."I was nervous after that because I knew she had a chance of beating me," Wagner said. "I was just back there with my coach, and we were watching. She missed her spare, and I was very shocked about that."Kurt needed a spare and nine pins to beat Wagner and advance to the finals. She left the seven-pin on her first ball, then threw a gutter ball while trying to hit the pin in the left corner. That sealed Wagner's 235-226 win.The national title was a dream come true for Wagner, who won a pair of regional titles at Great Bend High School and finished as state runner-up her junior year with a 289 game that still stands as a single-game record at GBHS."Wichita State is the only school I ever looked at to go to. I never looked at any other school. To be able to compete with them and win a national championship for them, it's very exciting."

Barton Theatre’s Barton Bards to present 'Under Milkwood'

A bonus of living on the prairie involves seeing stunning sunrises and sunsets regularly. Anyone awakening as the eastern sky lightens enjoys colorful shows folks elsewhere would love to see. A similar event happens several evenings a week. Those viewing the western horizon can watch sky colors morph from hues of blue to shades of orange, red, crimson, violet, lavender, and deep purple. Few enjoy frequent displays of breathtaking beauty, but one sight Kansans seldom see is the Northern Lights aka Aurora Borealis. One such opportunity occurred last week. Based on Kansas photography site postings, that solar storm created a lifetime memory for a few fortunate observers.

I kick myself I didn’t prop my eyelids open to watch night skies after receiving the Aurora Alert by Soft Serve News on my cell phone. However, after getting dozens of these the past eight years and staying awake through previous warnings without a payoff, I headed to bed. This alert looked good for Northern Wyoming, but the diagram didn’t suggest a show in Northwest Kansas. Once I saw a vivid aurora photo from Perryton, Texas, the next morning I realized this magnetic surge ended up bigger than predicted.

I won’t pretend to understand the science behind these light shows, but it involves solar activity and Earth’s magnetic field. Professionals who monitor such phenomena can identify solar storms that trigger these amazing light shows before the performance begins and alert hopeful viewers.

Recently, NPR published an article titled “What Causes the Northern Lights? Scientists Finally Know for Sure” written by Joe Hernandez. He cited several prominent scientists’ explanation of these events, referring several times to Nature Communications. This journal article explained that “disturbances on the sun pull on Earth’s magnetic field.” Other experts validate this. Apparently, this tugging triggers “cosmic undulations known as Alfvén waves that launch electrons at high speeds into Earth’s atmosphere where they create the aurora.” This explains that sense of movement humans perceive during these cosmic events.

So, imagine powerful geomagnetic storms agitating uncountable electrons traveling toward Earth. Hernandez’s article referred to Jim Schroeder, physic professor and lead author on the Nature Communications article who compared these electrons to surfers paddling to catch waves. Like a surfer catching a surge of cresting water, these electrons latch onto and ride those Alfvén waves. As a result, their rate of speed increases considerably. Anyone who’s ridden fast amusement park rides, cars, or skis knows speed intensifies excitement. Those faster Alfvén waves affect hitchhiking electrons the same way.

Eventually, the speed diminishes and those electrons’ excitement dwindles. Humans who happen to observe that electro-magnetic calming view a “release of light, which they then see as the aurora.”

Anyone who has surfed can appreciate that scientist’s analogy. Clearly, increasing speed adds thrill, but eventually the rush ends. Where wave-riders immediately search the sea behind them for the next rising crest, spent electrons undulate in multi-colored light waves on the horizon. Ironically, spying this brilliant end result stimulates human nerve endings and shutter clicks. Soon afterward, a flood of northern light images overwhelms internet photo sites.

After missing this chance of a lifetime view of Northern Lights in Kansas, I’ll make a point to stay awake and watch dark skies next time I get an Aurora Alert.

From the Russell Fire Department...

At 1 a.m. on Friday, April 28, The City of Russell Fire Department was dispatched to 49 South Kansas for a report of a detached garage that was on fire.

Crews arriving on scene observed a detached garage at the back of the property fully engulfed. Crews were able to extinguish the fire quickly once access was gained through a window and garage door. The fire was brought under control at 2:12 a.m. and crews remained on scene looking for extensions and extinguishing hot spots. 

The structure and contents of the garage are a total loss. After investigation, the cause of the fire is ruled as undetermined.

The City of Russell Fire Department would like to thank the Russell Police Department, Russell Electric Department, Russell County 911 and Russell County EMS.&nbsp;&nbsp;

ELLSWORTH COUNTY - Beginning Monday, the Kansas Department of Transportation will begin&nbsp;resurfacing about 15 miles of Kansas Highway 14 in Ellsworth County.

Work on K-14 will continue north from the Rice/Ellsworth County line to the south city limits of Ellsworth.

Flaggers and a pilot car will direct one 12-foot lane of traffic through the construction zone. Drivers should be prepared for a delay of up to 15 minutes and plan extra time in their travel schedules.&nbsp;

APAC-Kansas Inc. of Hutchinson is the prime contractor and has scheduled this $3.2 million project to be completed in July, weather permitting.

KDOT urges all motorists to be alert and obey the warning signs when approaching and driving through a highway work zone.&nbsp; To stay aware of all highway construction projects across Kansas, go to&nbsp;<a href="http://www.kandrive.org/" target="_blank">www.kandrive.org</a>&nbsp;or call 5-1-1.

Expect the area to be closed to traffic for approximately three weeks, weather and unforeseen circumstances permitting. This block will be closed to all traffic. 

Please be attentive and aware as the city works to make repairs in the area and be prepared to take alternate routes around the work.&nbsp;

Construction work on 8th Street in Great Bend

PAWNEE COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 8:30a.m. Friday in Pawnee County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2007 Ford Explorer driven by&nbsp; &nbsp;Kristi Marie Oak, 34, Great Bend, was&nbsp;southbound on 40th Avenue three miles north of Macksville.

The SUV traveled left of center, continued off the roadway into the east ditch, struck a field entrance and rolled multiple times.

EMS transported Oak to the hospital in Larned. She was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Great Bend woman hospitalized after SUV rolls

The music in downtown Larned sounded so good Tuesday afternoon that even a little rain did not stop business owners from stepping outside to give the Larned Area Chamber of Commerce a thumbs up. Eighteen new speakers have been installed on Broadway between 4th and 8th streets. Chamber Director Alex Filbert called it a huge improvement over previous speakers.

"We've had speakers in downtown Larned for years and years, but the quality is unmatched to what we have now," she said. "We used to use them for parades, and they would get the job done, but music was basically a no-go on them. It's really enhancing the atmosphere downtown, and it's just really exciting to have great, quality speakers playing music again."

The chamber will control the music from a variety of possible mediums, including Bluetooth, CDs, radio, or even a microphone. Best of all, the speakers come at no cost to the city.

"We were very, very fortunate," Filbert said, "and these speakers were funded by a private donor that saw the value of enhancing the downtown atmosphere."

The chamber plans to utilize the speakers during parades and other downtown events.

Larned Chamber bringing downtown music back with new speakers

Two seats were recently filled on the Hoisington City Council. In early April, the city announced two seats would be vacated with councilmembers Karen VanBrimmer and Carol Nather moving out of the wards to which they were elected. The city took applications to fill the vacancies through April 19, and announced appointments at the April 24 meeting.

Nather moved out of ward two. As a new resident in ward one, she was appointed back to the council and will now serve that ward. Keith Kennon is pleased to have the opportunity to represent ward two.

"I believe in local government, and to make a real difference for local people," he said. "Being that I live locally, I want to spend my hours doing something that makes our local community a better place to be."

Kennon moved to Hoisington in 2010, and is currently the clerk - and only employee - for the United States Postal Service in Claflin. He also runs his JK Catering &amp; BBQ business on the side. Turning 43 years old in May, Kennon hopes to get a younger Hoisington crowd involved in the city.

"I want to get in there and learn more about the insides of what a community goes through, budgets and stuff like that," he said. "I don't have anything, necessarily, that I think needs to be addressed or anything like that, I think, just mainly because I don't know it yet."

The Hoisington City Council is comprised of eight members serving four wards. Both appointed terms expire in January 2025.

The Barton County Commission held a special meeting Friday morning to meet deadline requirements for 20th Judicial District Juvenile Services and Central Kansas Community Corrections. The body approved the request for a state grant for Juvenile Services, and approved CKCC's fiscal year 2024 comprehensive plan.

On April 25, a motion went before the CKCC Advisory Board suggesting no changes were needed for the Matrix. The board voted 7-2 in favor of keeping the Matrix as is. Two board members abstained from the vote, and two members did not vote.

"The Matrix is important because it gives discretion to the officers to have a pick list to individual responses for folks to get that change we want from them that helps them to be successful," said CKCC Director Amy Boxberger. "It's not only just for the moment. We're looking at longterm."

Contingent on receiving quality assurance reports monthly, the commission approved the comphrensive plan submission 5-0. The commission also appointed Sharon Wondra to the CKCC Advisory Board. Commissioner Tricia Schlessiger said law enforcement agencies need to continue working together.

"I definitely think we need to see more communication across the board between law enforcement and community corrections," she said. "I feel like there have been some hurt feelings, maybe, on both sides so now they aren't communicating. Every director I talked to stressed how important it was to have that partnership."

CKCC will receive $680,724.15 from the state of Kansas for its programming. Boxberger said the state has set a goal of 75 percent of community correction clientele closing out supervision without going to prison. For fiscal year 2022, CKCC  had a nearly 85 percent success rate. The rate is hovering around 25 percent for the current fiscal year.

The commission also approved the 2024 budget request for Juvenile Services. The agency will receive $1,417,263.32 from the state for its programming. Just over $33,000 will go toward prevention, $807,000 to graduated sanctions, $320,000 for Juvenile Corrections Advisory Board programming, and $256,000 for reinvestment funds.

Barton Commission approves CKCC comprehensive plan for 2024

In March, Barton Community College Board of Trustee Don Learned
questioned the college’s use of TikTok, a social media, short-form video
hosting service owned by a Chinese company. At Tuesday’s meeting, Learned was
prepared to ask the college to stop using TikTok for advertising to attract
potential students in fear that the money is going to the Chinese government. 
"I think it gives the Communist party an insight into our college because that's what it does with the kids," said Learned. "I know 150 million people view TikTok. I'm not against those individuals. They can do what they want to. I just don't think that our college should be spending money advertising on TikTok when there are other ways."

TikTok has received world-wide criticism over user privacy. The majority of the
states have banned the application on government-issued devices.

In March, Barton Chief Communications Officer Maggie Harris said all of Barton's competitors and peers are using TikTok and the college's goal is to reach students where they are at. Harris noted Barton would continue to monitor regulations regarding usage of the app.

At Tuesday's meeting, Trustees
Chairman Mike Johnson said Barton President Dr. Carl Heilman and the college’s
communications department are actively looking at the TikTok situation. Johnson noted the budget year is over at the end of June which should give the college time to determine action to take for the next fiscal year. "They are actively looking at that based on comments from the board," said Johnson. "I would like to let them have that time to continue to evaluate the process and come back with a proposal for what they are going to do for the next budget." 
Johnson recommended placing the college’s use of TikTok as an agenda item for
their meeting in July to allow Heilman and the communications department time
to discuss possible action.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

questioned the college’s use of TikTok, a social media, short-form video
hosting service owned by a Chinese company. At Tuesday’s meeting, Learned was
prepared to ask the college to stop using TikTok for advertising to attract
potential students in fear that the money is going to the Chinese government. 
"I think it gives the Communist party an insight into our college because that's what it does with the kids," said Learned. "I know 150 million people view TikTok. I'm not against those individuals. They can do what they want to. The music and food are back in downtown Great Bend. On April 28, Fridays on Forest returns to the entertainment district on Forest Ave. between Williams and Main Streets. Great Bend Alive, the downtown arm of Great Bend Economic Development, will host the event from 5-9 p.m. on the last Friday of each month from April to October. Eco Devo Communications Director Lee Ann June encourages all to come out for the first event of the season.

"We'll have a ribbon cutting to start off the evening at 5," she said. "That will be right there at Williams and Forest, then the block party begins. It should be a good one. I know the forecast is looking a little chilly, but it I don't think it will be too bad. It'll be a nice spring day to get out and enjoy some good music, good food, and hang out with our locals."

Fridays on Forest typically feature a single band. The Lovegrass Music Festival Association has partnered with Great Bend Alive, and the April 28 kick-off will feature three bluegrass bands: Gravel Yard from Arkansas, the Brooke Blanche Band from Wichita, and Old Fangled from Lawrence.

"Gravel Yard is is the headliner, and they shared it to their page on Facebook, and they've got 10,000 followers," June said. "They're a big deal. I think each one of those bands has a following, so I'll be curious to see all the new faces we don't normally see in town. This is going to be a good one."

The April event is sponsored by Marmies Auto Group. No ticket is required for the free concert. No outside food or drink is allowed in the entertainment district, and no drinks may leave the area, but there will be a wide variety of food and beverage options from Lumpy's, Los Dos Potrillos, Band 17 BBQ, Mock N' Roll, RePerks, Yo Dog Wieners, Gambinos, and Dry Lake Brewing.
