The coupons will be sent at once and available in $5 increments. These coupons can be redeemed from authorized vendors at participating farmers' markets, which will be identified with signage showing they are authorized to accept the coupons.

Seniors are eligible if they complete an application and are 60 years or older or at least 55 years old and a member of an Indian Tribal Organization. Eligible seniors must also have an annual gross household income (before taxes are withheld) at or below 185% of the federal poverty level.

Eligible foods to purchase with the KSFMNP coupons from authorized farmers at participating farmers markets are defined as fresh, nutritious, unprepared, locally grown fruits, vegetables, locally produced honey and cut herbs produced in Kansas under normal growing conditions.

“The KSFMNP helps support Kansas seniors and our local Kansas farmers at farmers markets,” said&nbsp;Courtney Koenig, KSFMNP coordinator. “The program is great because it brings new people to the markets, increases sales for farmers and provides nutritious foods to people who need it.” &nbsp;

A large wildfire swept through Pawnee County in late March 2022. The fire destroyed a residence and several other structures, and also damaged a pair of Larned Fire Department firetrucks. Senator Jerry Moran's office visited Larned shortly after the fire to survey the damage. Fourteen months later, last Monday, Moran was in Larned to announce a federal allocation of $1.142 million for the purchase of two new firetrucks and a mobile command center.

"They asked what they could do to help, and we kind of explained the processes that were out there with the match and the cost of the equipment," said Larned Mayor William Nusser. 'It's just really difficult financially for our city to put those pieces together to replace these items because trucks can get to $6-7-800,000."

The city has two new trucks picked out from Hays Fire and Rescue Sales and Service, but Nusser said it will take more than two years to get the trucks delivered.

"We've got that specced and ready," he said. "We know what we're going to replace. We've picked a model and everything. Even though it's been federally allocated, there is still a process. You have to go through quite a bit of paperwork to get the funds. We've got until Aug. 31 the price is held on the trucks to order. Then the lead time to even get the trucks is like a two-year build time."

Along with his stop in Larned on Monday, Moran also made a stop in Ellinwood to check progress on the new Ellinwood Hospital &amp; Clinic.

If you have a child interested in theater, make sure to get them registered for the Great Bend Recreation Commission’s summer theatre production, “The Adventures of Rikki-Tikki Tavi.”&nbsp; The play was written by Tim Kelly, and is the Great Bend Recreation Commission’s 28th&nbsp;annual summer theatre production. Practices will be held Mondays through Thursdays from 3:30 – 5:00 p.m. starting June 5. The performance will be held on Friday, July 5, at 7 p.m. at the Great Bend High School Auditorium.

Charm, comedy, and enchantment are rolled into one to create children’s theatre at its best. Start with an empty stage, then add in jungle sounds, a few props, and simple snippets of animal costumes. Our storyteller from India sparks the audience’s imagination to see the jungle and its creatures as he weaves the magical tale, and the actors interpret the roles of cobras, monkeys, wolves, a crocodile, a camel, an elephant, and the wily mongoose, Rikki-Tikki Tavi.&nbsp; 

A British family in old India is in jeopardy from marauding cobras in league with Shere Khan, the arrogant tiger. Only Rikki can save them, and he does so in a surprising way. The opportunities for visual comedy and improvisation are endless in this gem of a play.

Great Bend Rec taking registration for summer theatre production

What began as an idea to update the sign on the western side of Ellinwood has turned into something a little more. Ellinwood Rotarian Justin Lear said the group was looking for a community service project and the sign at the "Y" was a good candidate. The project has evolved into purchasing an electronic billboard for the main intersection within Ellinwood city limits.

"What we'd like to do is put in a 6x8 (foot) electric sign with good enough visibility that we can do some imagery and well as wording on that," Lear said. "It'll be on the southeast side of the intersection where the stoplight is here in Ellinwood."

Rotary contacted American Legion Post 320 about putting the sign on their property. The Ellinwood Chamber would handle maintenance and booking for the sign. The goal would be to maximize visibility for all passersby through the intersection. An unofficial sign committee was created with members from Rotary, the Legion, and the Ellinwood Chamber of Commerce with Lear as the de facto head of the group. Now the fundraising begins.    

"We set a goal for the project to raise $50,000," said Lear. "We expect the sign to cost about $30,000. In our research, we found that electric signs have a limited lifespan and they also require some maintenance along the way. We didn't want to raise money for a sign, dump it on the chamber, and have a sign that, two or three years down the road, had to have some maintenance and they didn't have money for it."

Businesses that make a certain donation toward the purchase will be rewarded with advertising on the sign over the next two years. Anyone interested in making a contribution can contact the Ellinwood Chamber of Commerce at 110 1/2 N. Main in Ellinwood, or by calling (620) 564-3300.

Kansas Main Street has partnered with Main Street America to participate in the Equitable Entrepreneurial Ecosystems in the Rural Main Streets Program. Kansas Department of Commerce said the program is supported by the Kauffman Foundation. It aims to spur economic development in rural Kansas by building out entire ecosystems.

Kansas Main Street will partner with Main Street America to put on a one-day statewide workshop on Equitable Entrepreneurial Ecosystem building that will be open to any rural community to attend. The workshop is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 7, at Dry Lake Brewing in Great Bend. Kansas Main Street Director Scott Sewell shared a comment about the partnership.

"The partnership between Kansas Main Street and Main Street America is strong and this program is a great example of the benefits of that connection," Sewell said. "We are excited that MSA has partnered with the Kauffman Foundation to help communities better understand how to maximize entrepreneurial development and growth in rural Kansas."

Kansas Department of Commerce said there will be an in-community and virtual programming support for three selected communities to implement ecosystem building, along with a process for the Kansas Main Street Program to expand the ecosystem-building approach to other Main Street programs within Kansas. Participation in the workshop is mandatory if a community wishes to receive the additional support.

Main Street America Chief Program Officer Matt Wagner shared a comment about their approach.

"Holistic, place-based, equitable entrepreneurial ecosystems offer a promising path forward for these communities as a core economic development strategy," Wagner said.

"There is a need to deliver these services to rural communities, and Main Street America is uniquely positioned to address that need in partnership with its state and regional coordinating programs."

Barton County Sheriff's booking activity (5/25)

Running a marathon is not easy. Doing it while pushing a wheelchair may be even more difficult, but former Great Bend High School standout Jason Parr is up to the task to give a special needs child the opportunity to feel the thrill. A member of the Panther state champion cross country teams in 1999 and 2000, Parr has already finished two Boston Marathons. He's hoping to qualify for a third in 2024, this time as a vehicle for a child in a wheelchair.

"It's even more motiviating to push a kid that has special needs, knowing I want them to feel every part of gratitude that I feel being able to have the legs and capacity to do that," he said. "I don't really think about it much. It is tough, but it's so exciting just to get through each mile knowing we're getting closer to the finish line."

Parr also picked up various individual state track and cross country medals in his GBHS career before graduating in 2001. He went on to run at Barton Community College, and finished his degree at Evangel University in Springfield, Mo. He returned to Kansas to coach at Maize South High School. In his one season there, he won boys' and girls' state cross country titles in 2016. He spent the last five years coaching track and cross country at Friends University in Wichita before stepping down in May to pursue work at an alternative at-risk program school. But everything started when he began running for coach Jack Bowman at GBHS.

"That guy is a staple piece of why I get to do what I do today," Parr said. "I saw how he led young kids. I saw how cared about people. I saw the value he placed in every individual student-athlete. For somebody like me that needed somebody in my life at that time, he was so influential. I knew I could change my behaviors and change the things I was doing. I decided to run. That became a huge deal for me. It helped pave the way to pay for college. It still is part of what I love doing today, just with a little different focus now."

Parr has run in several marathons and Ironman triathlons - that's 2.4 miles of swimming, 112 miles of biking, and 26.2 miles of running - missing the Ironman world competition by just 22 seconds in 2018. He ran his first Boston Marathon in 2014, the year after the bombing. That year, Parr represented Team Hoyt. Dick Hoyt pushed his parapalegic son, Rick, through many marathons. The duo became icons until Dick's passing in 2021, and Rick's passing earlier this week at the age of 61. Parr helped the team raise funds to provide motorized wheelchairs for children with special needs.

"I think for anybody that's not a professional athlete, this is our Olympic experience," Parr said. "For any novice or recreational runner to have the thrill and opportunity to stand at Hopkinton Hill with 30,000 runners, just knowing you have worked really hard to get to this point of qualifying. I had the opportunity to be in the first wave, which is the fast wave, so it was really neat to be with some of the best runners around the United States and in the world. Words can't describe it."

Now living in Wichita, Parr started Parr's Purpose Ministry where he speaks publicly and writes training plans. The organization also has college ministry housing to provide discipleship for students. Part of giving back to the community, Parr is involved with Ainsley's Angels, which gives wheelchair-bound kids a chance to race. 

"What we do is give an opportunity to be the legs for kids that want to be a part of the race - that want to feel the thrill of being a part of it just like I have had the opportunity and privilege to do," said Parr.

The group participates in several local 5K and 10K runs. Just last week, Parr and one of his kids made it through their first half-marathon together. On June 17, Parr will take it several steps further at the Grandma's Marathon in Duluth, Minn. The goal is to run a qualifying time for the 2024 Boston Marathon: three hours and 10 minutes as an individual, or three hours and 45 minutes pushing a special needs child.

"To really run a marathon effectively, it takes about 24 weeks to really put in that volume and time," Parr said. "This week I'm at week 14. I'll put in about 65 miles for my peak week, with an 18-20 long-run Saturday. I'm just trying to get my body back to where it was a few years ago when I was in peak race shape, but just have a much different purpose now. I'm just motivated to give kids an opportunity."

Parr lives in Wichita with his wife, Anna, and three kids: Adelynn, Amelia, and newborn Harlan. Adeline will carry on the Parr name at Maize South High School at the state track meet this weekend.

Running with purpose: GB native seeking third Boston Marathon entry

From buying her own market lambs to show at her county 4-H fair to testifying before the U.S. House Committee on Agriculture, Annika Wiebers combines an affinity for agriculture with a mission to bridge the gap between production agriculture and folks like herself who did not grow up on the farm. Combined, these qualities make her an ideal first recipient of the David Radenberg Memorial Scholarship.&nbsp;

“Unlike many people in Kansas, I didn’t grow up with a background in production agriculture,” Wiebers said. “I had relatives who were farmers and ranchers, but I didn’t have any personal experience with agriculture until I was in high school and chose to expand my 4-H work to include livestock projects. This involvement opened my eyes to the need for communicating and educating people on the importance of agriculture.”

Wiebers got her earliest touches with production agriculture from relatives who were farmers and ranchers, but it wasn’t until she decided to buy some market lambs to show through 4-H that she had her first real-world experience as a livestock producer.&nbsp;

“The learning curve was incredibly steep, but I loved the experience and enjoyed taking on the responsibility,” Wiebers said. “Since then, I have grown increasingly more interested in agriculture both through my own experiences and those of my friends.”

Wiebers continued to pursue both livestock projects in addition to cultivating a natural skill set for communications. In 2018-2019, she earned the top prize in Kansas as the state 4-H winner in the communications project. Since then, she has put those skills to work advocating for agriculture, including speaking to the U.S. House Committee on Agriculture regarding the 2022 Farm Bill, as part of her experience at that year’s National 4-H Conference. Today, Wiebers is a sophomore at Kansas State University, pursuing a degree in agricultural communications, furthering her goals of connecting consumers and farmers.&nbsp;

“By pursuing a degree in agricultural communications, I am combining my communication skills with my growing affinity for agriculture,” Wiebers said. “As someone who wasn’t born into the industry but instead chose to be involved, I would also be a valuable advocate highlighting the value of agriculture and helping others have this opportunity for discovery.”

One can only imagine the proud chuckles of David Radenberg had he the chance to meet Wiebers in person. Radenberg, a lifelong wheat farmer in Claflin and long-time Kansas Wheat Commissioner, could often be spotted peaking over the cubicles or sitting laid back in an office to chat with staff. Radenberg passed in 2021 after a lengthy battle with cancer, but the scholarship in his name is a testament to continuing his support of the future of Kansas agriculture.&nbsp;

This year is the first offering of the David Radenberg Memorial Scholarship, which awards one $1,000 scholarship to a current undergraduate or graduate student from Kansas who is pursuing a career in the field of agriculture.&nbsp;

Radenberg represented central Kansas on the Kansas Wheat Commission from April 2011 to March 2020, including serving as chairman from August 2018 to May 2019. Radenberg was also a founding board member of the Kansas Wheat Commission Research Foundation.

During his tenure as a commissioner, he supported wheat research and international marketing efforts, including attending the 31st annual Latin American Millers Conference in Lima, Peru, in 2013. At the time, he expressed how he enjoyed sharing with millers, bakers and merchandisers about the research investments Kansas farmers are making to provide a better-quality product.&nbsp;

The selection of Wiebers - as a communications major - as the scholarship recipient furthers Radenberg’s legacy as an advocate for sharing the story of Kansas agriculture with others.&nbsp;

“My background gives me a strong awareness of how much people simply don’t know about where their food comes from and the importance of agriculture in our society,” Wiebers said. “I now have a better understanding of what it’s like to be on both ends of the production agriculture spectrum and believe I will be valuable in bridging the gap between what can seem like two completely different worlds.”&nbsp;

WHEAT SCOOP: Radenberg Scholarship awarded to Wiebers

A 62-year-old Great Bend native recently moved back to her hometown from Kansas City where she found herself “drinking every day,” and living with disabilities that kept her from keeping a steady job.

“I was a mess,” said the woman, who wants to remain anonymous. “I had worked all my life but then COVID hit. This led to other serious health problems and the store where I worked closed.

“I couldn’t get disability and had to take early retirement. I had tried six other jobs but was unsuccessful because of my disabilities. I wanted to come home. I was sick of city life and didn’t have family nearby.”

But she did have family here. The woman moved back to Great Bend and lived with relatives for a few months.

“I cannot tell you how much I appreciate their help,” she commented.

During that time with family, she was referred to The Center for Counseling &amp; Consultation, 5815 Broadway. This was the beginning of a new life and moving into a new home, she said.

“If it hadn’t been for The Center, I would have started drinking again,” she said. “God had a lot to do with this – lots of prayers.”

One of her first stops at The Center resulted in medical-assisted treatment for bipolar disorder, which “stabilized me. I also started seeing a therapist and met Kirstin, the housing specialist. Thanks to her, I now have an awesome apartment of my own.

“It really helps to have someone on your side – like a cheerleader. I wouldn’t have known where to start looking for a home and didn’t know I qualified for HUD assistance.”

Housing &amp; Urban Development offers help for lower-income individuals.

Kirstin Williams, The Center’s housing specialist, worked with the woman for several months.

“The first thing she mentioned was the importance of finding her own home and being independent,” Williams recalled. “She genuinely appreciates her family’s help but needed a place to call her own.

“Everyone deserves a clean, safe place to live,” she continued. “It is difficult to know about all the resources in our community unless you work with an agency such as The Center.”

Williams and the woman met weekly and the process to find a home “went fairly quickly because she had all of her paperwork in order.”

In most cases, this is a lengthy process that can take at least eight months. Because of this, “people can become discouraged. But we try to help them through the waiting phase too. We listen, and then provide support and guidance,” Williams noted.

While housing is her main focus, Williams also provides some case-management services. She is currently helping about 10 people with housing issues.

Williams is SOAR certified; the acronym stands for SSI/SSDI Outreach, Access and Recovery.

The Center hired her as a housing specialist in preparation for offering a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic. A CCBHC is a multi-dimensional program that cares for the whole person.

“We can zero in on what any particular person needs,” Williams said. “Sometimes, it really does take a village.”

Action was light at Wednesday's Barton County Commission meeting. The board heard from Bob Wetmore with Great Plains Development, Inc., though no action was required. Approval was needed for a request from Juvenile Services Director Marissa Woodmansee.

"Our Juvenile Corrections Advisory Board is made up of 12 individuals across the district of Barton, Russell, Rice, Stafford, and Ellsworth counties," she said. "Specifically today, I'm here to ask for the approval of two board appointments in the educational sector."

Great Bend Middle School Principal David Reser and USD 428 Director of Special Education Christie Gerdes both announced they would be leaving the district at the close of the school year. Woodmansee asked they be replaced on the advisory board by new Director of Barton County Special Services Ashley Riley, and USD 428 Secondary Teacher Representative Rachel Thexton.

The Juvenile Services advisory board typically meets every other month, but Woodmansee said there can be exceptions.

"For example, one of the things and projects we had last year was updating our MOU (memorandum of understanding) with the Department of Children and Families, which had a great impact on our relationship with law enforcement," she said. "I actually asked for a subsection of our law enforcement representatives to come together and have some conversation. That group met every month from July through probably October."

Riley and Thexton were appointed to uncompensated terms that will expire June 30, 2026.

"I actually asked for a subsection of our law enforcement representatives to come together and have some conversation. Riley, Thexton appointed to Juvenile Services Advisory Board

Twenty-nine elementary students earned their own wheels this week after achieving perfect attendance for the 2022-2023 school year. The Perfect Attendance Bike Program has been awarding bikes for over 12 years to encourage students to attend school every day in Great Bend USD 428 Elementary schools. Assemblies were held at all five elementary buildings to celebrate the students’ accomplishment with their peers, teachers, and families.

“Congratulations to the students who have stepped up to the challenges of grade school and have completed another successful school year,” said Karen Shaner, program organizer. “We would like to thank all the students for their hard work and dedication during the school year. We also want to thank those who make it possible for the students to be on time each day and not miss a day of learning.”

The effort is led by Karen Shaner and Jane Isern, and is supported by a lengthy list of community donors. Walmart has been a consistent partner in the effort, providing assembly and storage for bikes in addition to financially supporting the program.

A unique addition to this year’s program was a custom CASE IH bike donated by KanEquip, Inc. that is valued at roughly $500. Justin Loera, a 5th-grade student from Riley Elementary was the lucky winner drawn out of all 4-6th-grade students who were eligible.

"This is an amazing program that honors our well-deserving perfect attendance students,” said Khris Thexton, USD 428 Superintendent. “We greatly appreciate the dedication of our students and families to accomplish perfect attendance - it takes a lot of work by students, parents, grandparents, and caregivers! We are fortunate to have such a great program and generous community sponsors to celebrate this notable accomplishment.”

Every student who achieved perfect attendance this year was awarded a bike. In addition, the Pilot Club of Great Bend provided a new fitted bike helmet to further their organization’s efforts to support brain safety and health.

Community members award Great Bend students for perfect attendance

WASHINGTON —The ESOP Association represents the interests of millions of Employee Owners and their companies across the nation.&nbsp;

On May 18, the organization honored Eagle Communications Chairman Gary Shorman for a career spent helping to grow employee ownership in America, with the Michael Keeling Founder’s Award.&nbsp;

The award honors an individual for their contributions to the founding of Employee Stock Ownership Programs (ESOP) and for working to elevate awareness of the benefit and value of ESOPs.&nbsp;Eagle Communications has been an employee-owned company since 1998 with employees now owning 100 percent of the company.

The award was presented at the organization's Annual Awards Ceremony during The ESOP Association’s National Conference in Washington, DC.&nbsp;

The Founder's award was created upon Michael Keeling's retirement from The ESOP Association after 28 years as President. The organization only presented this award one other time, and that was to the founder himself.

"Shorman has set a lifelong example we can all be inspired by," the ESOP Association stated. “Shorman has been a passionate advocate while serving on the organization's Board of Directors, and worked to create the organization's Silver Tsunami video series to encourage ESOP formation."&nbsp;

"It has been an honor to serve the ESOP association and be recognized with this award," said Shorman. "Helping build the Eagle ESOP and being a champion for employee owned companies has been rewarding. Employee ownership creates a unique business environment where everyone shares in the success and shares in the growth of their company."

"Shorman also chaired the organization's search committee for the first leadership transition at TEA in nearly three decades. He chaired the Association during COVID, led the way as we modernized our Board governance procedures, and has helped direct more than one hundred thousand dollars to the Employee Ownership Foundation."

"Any one of these things would be worthy of recognition, but together they exemplify a special dedication to ESOPs and future ESOP formation."

The annual awards honor excellence and achievement in the ESOP community and the people and companies that make significant contributions to The ESOP Association’s cause and membership.

Association honors Eagle Chairman Gary Shorman with Founder's award 

The Great Bend High School track and field state athletes are headed to Wichita Friday. It's a good thing. The track and football field at the school's Memorial Stadium will be closed as of May 25 as renovation work begins. Last November, the USD 428 Board of Education approved up to $2 million for the replacement of the track and turf. Activities Director Matt Westerhaus said they're hoping for an August completion date.

"The track that had been open for public usage, and the turf that had been open for public usage will be unavailable during the construction timeframe," he said. "We're not sure on the completion date of when everything will be back open in regards to the track and turf."

Texas-based Hellas Corporation has done work in some of the biggest facilities in the nation and will be handling the work in Great Bend. Changes will include a bi-color track, two tones of green on the football field, and the "D Zone" on the north end of the football field will be covered with track material. The paw logo at the 50-yard line will also be replaced with the Panther logo. The track was last replaced in 2004, and the turf was last replaced in 2008.

"They got everything they could out of the track and turf, which is a kudos to the district for being diligent with money," Westerhaus said. "The track, it needs a lot of TLC. Ripping everything up and starting over is going to be a great thing for us."

For the last 12 years, the name Chris Steiner has been synonymous with Central Plains High School football. On Monday, the first and only coach of the Oiler program announced he was stepping down from his coaching roles at the school. The move stems from a USD 112 Board of Education special meeting on May 15. The board voted to keep Steiner on as head coach but did not renew his son, Bryce Steiner's, contract as assistant coach. Chris took a week to mull his future over with family.

"I just want to really thank all the people that came out and showed Bryce and I so much support," he said. "All my past players, parents, opposing coaches, even opposing players from other teams. It was very humbling to hear all the things, the posts on Facebook. We had almost 100 people in the room the night of the special board meeting."

Central Plains played its first football season in 2011. The Oilers went 9-2 and won a district title in that inaugural year. The Oilers won at least nine games in seven of Steiner's 12 years coaching the program. Steiner won seven district titles, and his 2014 and 2018 squads went undefeated as state champions. He ends his tenure with a 91-34 record.

"It's hard to leave it," he said. "It feels like I lost a part of me. I kind of felt like I was backed into a corner and this is what I had to do to stay true to how I do things and stay true to the people that support me. I know a lot of people think it's because it's my own son, but I would have done it for any assistant coach."

Steiner also formed the first formal powerlifting squad at the school, and Central Plains hosted the state championships. The Lady Oilers won six state titles and finished second three times since 2013. The Oiler boys won four state titles and a runner-up in that stretch.

"That came from Quivira Heights," Steiner said. "They had done such a great job with that and hosted the state meet forever. We now host the state meet every year that has 400-500 kids."

All along, Steiner has treated his coaching duties like a family affair. That factored into Monday's decision.

"As much as it felt like a family to me, I had to take care of my own family, too," he said. "They've always been a huge part of me coaching for the last 18 years. All the way back to Bryce being my ball boy when he was a little kid; my girls cutting up play cards for me and drawing up plays for me."

The Hoisington Public Library, 169 S. Walnut, will host “Healthy Body, Healthy Brain” at 6 p.m. June 8 with Monique Koerner, K-State Research and Extension Family and Community Wellness Agent.

This topic covers the connection between the brain and gut and what you can do to keep both healthy.

Also covered will be developing a diverse microbiome and how to get one.

Hoisington Library to host 'Healthy Body, Healthy Brain'

Central Kansas Christian Academy (CKCA), a Christian school in Great Bend, recently worked through an eight-component verification to receive accreditation through the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI). The school was established in 2002 through the combination of two Christian schools and for a number of years has been working towards this designation. The massive undertaking was led by the staff and Board of Directors, but also required the engagement of more than 40 volunteers consisting of parents, alumni and community members.

“Like the public schools, our school has predetermined standards for student education. Our staff has been providing high-quality education for our students for decades now, and it’s evidenced by the caliber of students we’re graduating out, who are going on to college and impressive careers later in life,” said Dottie Dozier, CKCA principal. “The school has always been operating at an accreditation level, but this year we were able to complete the rigorous, multi-year process of proving that fact with the help of so many wonderful staff and volunteers.”

ACSI looks at eight standards required for their accreditation: · Philosophy and Foundations · Governance and Executive Leadership · Home and Community Relations and Student Services · Personnel · Instructional Program and Resources · Student Care · Character, Values, and Spiritual Formation of Students · Continuous School Improvement Plan

To obtain accreditation, the school not only has to operate with all eight standards in mind, but the teams of volunteers assigned to each of these standards also had to provide documentation and evidences that could be reviewed by the ACSI. These evidences had to show that the school had been meeting or exceeding these standards for several years.

“At the end of the review process, numerous representatives of ACSI came to CKCA for a site visit and spent several days reviewing the documentation, meeting with staff and volunteers and ensuring thatwe follow the policies and procedures we say we do,” Dozier said. “Our staff has always been focused on the solid education of our students, both spiritually and academically. Our teachers all hold a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in education, and some have master’s degrees. Through this accreditation, we’re now able to be a continuing education unit (CEU) provider for our teachers and others. We will also be able to apply for grants and programs for the school to continue building Christian education in Great Bend. It’s very exciting!”

Moving into the future, the school will be on a six-year cycle that will require similar documentation, site visits, and recording evidences to ensure that the school continues to operate at the high standards set by ACSI.

Central Kansas Christian Academy is a nondenominational community Christian school for students in kindergarten through eighth grade with a positive environment that combines Christian character training with a rigorous academic curriculum. The core classroom studies are supplemented with a variety of enrichment courses, including physical education, music, band, art, library and computer applications. Students also have opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities and athletics, such as basketball, cheerleading and Student Council.
