From the Great Bend Rec

If you have a child interested in theater, make sure to get them registered for the Great Bend Recreation Commission’s summer theatre production, “The Adventures of Rikki-Tikki Tavi.”  The play was written by Tim Kelly, and is the Great Bend Recreation Commission’s 28th annual summer theatre production. Practices will be held Mondays through Thursdays from 3:30 – 5:00 p.m. starting June 5. The performance will be held on Friday, July 5, at 7 p.m. at the Great Bend High School Auditorium.

Charm, comedy, and enchantment are rolled into one to create children’s theatre at its best. Start with an empty stage, then add in jungle sounds, a few props, and simple snippets of animal costumes. Our storyteller from India sparks the audience’s imagination to see the jungle and its creatures as he weaves the magical tale, and the actors interpret the roles of cobras, monkeys, wolves, a crocodile, a camel, an elephant, and the wily mongoose, Rikki-Tikki Tavi.

A British family in old India is in jeopardy from marauding cobras in league with Shere Khan, the arrogant tiger. Only Rikki can save them, and he does so in a surprising way. The opportunities for visual comedy and improvisation are endless in this gem of a play.
