This Giving Tuesday, Volunteers In Action of Central KS is seeking community help to sustain essential volunteer-driven services that support seniors, veterans, and families in need, said VIA Director Linn Hogg.

For 50 years, Volunteers In Action of Central Kansas relied on funding from the AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP grant to coordinate hundreds of volunteers who deliver Meals on Wheels, provide medical transportation, assist with free tax preparation, guide Medicare beneficiaries, shop for groceries, and distribute senior food boxes.

Earlier this year, that federal grant was not renewed, leaving a significant gap in the funding needed to manage, train, and recruit volunteers, she said.

“Each one of these programs depends on caring, committed volunteers — and on the coordination that connects them with those who need help,” Hogg said. “Without that support, vulnerable neighbors may lose the lifeline these volunteers provide.

“Quite frankly,” said Hogg, “without Volunteers In Action and the volunteers they manage, over 1,000 meals will not be delivered to homebound seniors, and more than 40 people each month will not receive the rides to medical appointments that they desperately need.”

She further emphasized that many programs are only available through Volunteers In Action and primarily serve seniors. The loss of such a program would create a significant gap in services for the elderly, many of whom live well below the poverty line.

Giving Tuesday, celebrated worldwide on Dec.&nbsp;3, is a global day of generosity that encourages people to give back in meaningful ways. Donations to Volunteers In Action of Central Kansas will directly fund volunteer coordination and community outreach that ensure these vital services continue, she said.

“Giving Tuesday is not about how large your donation is, but about recognizing that your contribution helps those in need,” said Hogg.

The Great Bend Chamber of Commerce held a Ribbon Cutting for 24HR Laundry on Thursday. The business celebrated a soft opening on Friday, Nov. 14, followed by a strong turnout during its official grand opening weekend. Community members stopped by to tour the facility, try out the new equipment, and show their support for this much-needed addition to Great Bend.

Owned and operated by Devin Denton, 24HR Laundry is the third laundromat in his growing business portfolio. Denton also operates two laundromats in Dodge City. With the new Great Bend location, he continues his commitment to providing clean, modern, and reliable laundry services for local residents.

Located at 3511 10th Street, Suite 101, Great Bend, 24HR Laundry features state-of-the-art touch screen equipment and is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The business prides itself on offering customers the best possible wash and dry service in a safe, convenient environment.

To make laundry even easier, the facility offers a change machine that accepts $1, $5, $10, and $20 bills, converting them into quarters for customer use. In addition, 24HR Laundry will soon include a mobile app that allows customers to pay with debit or credit cards directly from their phones and the ability to start any washer or dryer remotely. GB Chamber welcomes 24HR Laundry with ribbon cutting ceremony

The outcome of a football game can hinge on an inch or two. Yet, using some of the most rudimentary tools in sports, the guys on the sideline usually manage to get it right so the outcome is decided by the athletes on the field. Bob Suelter has spent 36 years on the sideline as part of the Great Bend High School chain gang. He recently shared some of his memories with Steve Webster on 1590 KVGB/95.5 FM's "Pages in Time" program. Suelter said one easy observation is how much the game has changed in the last several decades.

"A lot of their coaching methods have changed so much in the last 20 years," he said. "They're teaching kids a completely different game. It's not so much knock somebody down and keep knocking him down anymore. It's hold your spot, move him over here, use this technique and that technique."

The GBHS chain gang works the visitor's sideline, which has been the host to many great programs and coaches over the years. Western Athletic Conference foes Liberal and Dodge City each made big runs. Few programs in state history were as dominant as Gary Cornelsen's Liberal teams in the 1990s, which won four state championships between 1992 and 1997.

"He was a legend, but I didn't know what he looked like," Suelter recalls. "We got on the sideline, and I'm looking around, thinking where in the world is Gary Cornelsen? The guy I picked out was the bus driver. We were playing pretty well that year, and they had a big play. The called timeout and everybody gathered around Gary Cornelson, and it was the guy I thought was the bus driver."

The real Liberal bus driver, a large and boisterous man, also made his presence known. He was telling sideline workers about his run with another team's cannon and a subsequent ruptured eardrum. He was planning on filing a lawsuit.

"Great Bend scored and shot off their cannon," Suelter said. "He says, 'Well there goes another $100,000 in my lawsuit.'"

The top-ranked Panthers play Salina Central in tonight's Class 5A sub-state (semifinal) game. The Mustangs have rebounded from some lean years, but were once just as mighty as Liberal with six Class 5A titles between 1993 and 2005, all under legendary coach Marvin Diener.

Central former-standout running back Jake Sharp rushed for more than 6,500 yards before moving on to a decorated career at the University of Kansas. Suelter said Diener could get after his kids but knew when to show off a tender side. That was on display when Sharp was still an underclassman. 

"He put the Sharp kid at running back, and the Sharp kid had a heck of a game," Suelter said. "He really played hard. I'm standing there, and Sharp comes running off the field. Diener told him to cover over, and he says, 'I just want to thank you.' It kind of made me tearful. Diener says, 'I want to thank you. You went in there and did everything I asked you to do, and from now on you're my starting running back.' I thought that kid was floating on air, and so was I."

In more than 30 years of sideline work, Suelter has seen some of the worst and best of GBHS football. He recalls the years when the Panthers scheduled a certain Wichita school. Most years, it was the best chance for either team to win a game that season. Great Bend had turned the page and was beating the Wichita school one year when Suelter gained another memorable moment.

"We were just running all over them, and the lights went out," he said. "They stopped the game, and this kid behind me says, 'Dang, we can't even beat a team that don't have lights.'"

Liberal, Dodge City, and Garden City, with coaches like Cornelsen, Dick Masters, and Dave Meadows, used to run the WAC. In recent seasons, the power has shifted to the smaller schools in Great Bend and Hays.

"They were incredibly good, and we'd get spanked, but you'd see some players you knew were going to go to KU or K-State, or be playing on Saturday somewhere," Suelter said. "Now, we have those players."

Dry Lake Brewing at the corner of Lakin and Main is always a busy place on Thursdays. This week, a few more people piled in for the Great Bend Recreation Commission's presentation on its new golf course. GBRC Director Chris Umphres said the big project began with a gift. 

"Definitely a big shoutout to the friends of the Great Bend community," he said. "They donated the golf course to the Rec Center. We're able to now start work on getting funds to bring that to the community. Recreation is just such a big part of what we do as a rec commission. Now, these are some of the avenues we can provide to the community."

A question of any project of this magnitude is cost. Private funds and sponsorships will drive the construction and re-opening of the former Stone Ridge Golf Course on the northeast side of Great Bend. Daily fees and yearly membership dues will help keep the facility as a public facility starting in the spring of 2027.

"The capital campaign we're working on now is going to be privately funded, really a big push on this Giving Tuesday," Umphres said. "There are some matching funds that go into that. We definitely have to have private funding to get this going. We've said all along that the capital funds have to come privately, but the Rec Commission is in a very good place to be able to manage it and operate it once we're up and running."

Illinois-based Kemper Sports operates more than 200 golf courses, private clubs, sports venues, and resorts around the United States, including golf courses in Kansas. That organization will staff the new facility, which will likely include local employees. Architect firm Quitno Golf will help design and maintain the course at a professional playing level.

One of the biggest changes to the existing facility, which has sat vacant for the last three years, is the demolition of the current clubhouse and the construction of a new 3,500-4,500-square-foot clubhouse  that will include a four to six pickleball courts, a kitchen, a dining lounge, and a pro shop.

"There's a lot of rust, there's a lot of animals in there," said Umphres. "There are a lot of roof leaks, mold, that kind of stuff. I think the best bang for the buck is to bring it down. The pro side of it is now we're able to build a clubhouse to suit the new needs and add pickleball. I think pickleball is kind of an underserved area. We join that with the golf community, and it could be a very nice place for everybody."

The golf course will remain an 18-hole course with some alterations of hole layouts and green locations. Front and back nine yardage will be more evenly distributed with the new layout, and some trees will be removed to widen the play areas. Cart paths will be available throughout the course. Green fees are expected to be competitive with other area courses. 

Clean up of the existing facility will begin this winter with the demolition of the clubhouse and the removal of trees, weeds, and undesirable grass. A complete greens re-grassing and tee and fairway conditioning is planned for the summer and fall of 2026. Other course features like bunkers and the driving range will also be addressed. Limited play on the new course is expected to begin in the summer of 2027.

The Barton County Commission adjusted the funding source for a previously approved computer equipment purchase, County Administrator Matt Patzner reported Monday.

The commission initially authorized a $25,225.00 purchase of computer equipment from Bauer Computer on Oct. 28, with the cost divided among various departments. Following that approval, the Central Kansas Community Corrections (CKCC) office declined its assigned equipment, and the 911/Communications office requested the reassignment of one laptop.

Commissioners voted to cancel the $2,214.00 Bauer Computer encumbrance originally charged to CKCC. That cost will now be assessed to the 911 / Communications department.

Committee appointments made to Memorial Parks Committee

Two citizens were appointed Monday to the Memorial Parks Advisory Committee by the Barton County Commission.

County Works Director Chris Schartz presented the appointment request, noting that the committee advises the commission on the care and management of the Golden Belt and Hillcrest Memorial Parks. Public announcements had been made seeking applicants for the openings.

Commissioners appointed Brooke Haulmark&nbsp;to fill an unexpired, uncompensated position set to end July 1, 2027. They also appointed Nikki Seybert&nbsp;to a full, uncompensated term ending July 1, 2029.

Budget adjusted for computer replacement after Barton Co. department changes

Smoky Hills PBS brings viewers an exciting lineup of sports This Thanksgiving

Large numbers of birds continue to migrate through Central Kansas, including at Cheyenne Bottoms. That's good for bird watchers and the hunting community, but Bottoms Wildlife Manager Jason Wagner said the influx of snow geese has meant more positive cases of avian influenza.

"Once the snow geese started showing up, we instantly started noticing sick birds," he said. "Avian influenza is rearing its head again. We've been testing a lot of ducks this year. It seemed like early season, teal, we had a lot of positives."

Wagner said staff tested approximately 300 ducks during teal season, and another 200-250 birds have been tested since November. Influenza prevalence among ducks has decreased, but there has been an uptick in positive tests with the arrival of the snow geese.

Wagner said duck populations at the Bottoms continue to be among the highest he has ever seen. And he marvels at their ability to adapt to their surroundings.

"In the last few years, it seems like they just stayed in the refuge all day long," he said. "They don't ever leave the refuge until night. This year, what I've noticed that's different is they're leaving the refuge, and they're using the hunting pools, but they're using them where no one is. It blows my mind that they can pick up on pressure that much."

That pressure, Wagner said, has been surprisingly minimal. While other wetlands around the state are at least maintaining their hunting populations, the Bottoms has not.

"Our hunting pressure has been significantly less than I was expecting," Wagner said. "I was expecting we would have water this year, and there would be people everywhere. That has not been the case, whatsoever. It has been, surprisingly, a low number of hunters out there this year."

Wagner said the number of ducks and hunters makes for some ideal hunting conditions, if the hunters can find the wily ducks.

On Nov. 19, just before 9 p.m., the Sheriff's Office was notified of a motor vehicle accident on K-96 highway approximately three miles northwest of Great Bend. Upon arrival, sheriff's deputies located a two-vehicle collision.

Investigation at the scene indicates that a 2016 Ford Fusion operated by Mark DeWald, 72, of Great Bend was eastbound on K-96 highway when it crossed left of center striking a 2007 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup. The pickup was operated by Luke Krehbiel, 17, of Timken. 

The vehicles collided head on in the westbound lane. The Dodge truck initially caught fire after the collision but was quickly extinguished by the Great Bend Fire Department. DeWald was pronounced dead at the scene by the Barton County Coroner's Office. Krehbiel was transported to KU Medical Center in Great Bend with minor injuries.

The Sheriff's Office suspects Dewald may have had a medical incident prior to the collision causing him to cross the center line. The accident is still under investigation.

Race track construction, a new swimming pool, and the upcoming holiday season are keeping city of Great Bend employees busy as 2025 reaches its conclusion. City Administrator Logan Burns updated the council on the various projects at Monday's city council meeting.

A $9-10 million pool concept was introduced in October. The pool committee has continued to review different aspects of that project and will meet tonight to approve a final pool concept. That design will go before the city council for approval at the Dec. 15 meeting. If approved, a contract for the construction of the pool at Brit Spaugh Park could also be approved. Construction is slated to begin after the swim season in August 2026.

Great Bend's Home for the Holidays Festival and Parade will take place on Saturday, Nov. 29, with a theme of "Holiday Movie Madness." Burns said the city's Christmas lights will shine a few days before that.

"Christmas lights will go live on Nov. 26, then we will light the Mayor's Tree at the Home for the Holidays Festival on Nov. 29," he said. "I might be biased, but I think we have some of the best trail lights around."

The Great Bend Rec Commission is hosting a "Let's Talk Golf" event at Dry Lake Brewing tonight to discuss plans involving the former Club at Stoneridge course. 

"That will be from 4:30 until 7 p.m. at Dry Lake Brewing," Burns said. "Chris Umphres and his staff will be unveiling the concept they've gotten back from their consultant. They've reallocated some holes, they've got a clubhouse, and they're looking at the possibility of an indoor pickleball arena."

Burns also updated the council on construction at the SRCA Dragstrip west of town. Crews will begin stockpiling aggregate on Dec. 2, then lay down steel mats. Paving of the facility is expected to begin on Dec. 10.

Barton County Sheriff's Office Booking activity (11/19)

It was standing room only at the Great Bend Columbus Club Wednesday morning as bidders and other interested parties gathered for the 2025 Barton County Tax Sale. In February, the County had 299 parcels with back taxes owing abstracted.&nbsp; Today, 40 of those properties came up for sale.&nbsp;

The auction is the culmination of months of work by Treasurer Jim Jordan and his team. Several members of the office’s staff were on hand, overseeing the sale and logging the results.

“This is not something we want to do,” Jordan said, noting the sale is the last resort&nbsp;to recover delinquent real estate taxes. While the statutes vary by property use, most homes are not included on the sale until taxes are delinquent for at least three years.&nbsp; And with the process taking months, taxpayers are given substantial notice as well as options, such as payment plans and escrow accounts.

“These taxes are what we use to pay for all the services we need and enjoy in our communities,” he said. “At the end of the day, we’re all responsible for our fair share of that tax burden.”

Sheriff Brian Bellendir served as the auctioneer on behalf of B&amp;B Auction Services, which donated its services. All the tracts were sold as-is.

Dereck Hollingshead, IT Director, was on hand to provide tech support; Patrick Hoffman, County Counselor, oversaw the legalities of the sale; Susan Williams, Register of Deeds, was available for assistance and Sheriff’s deputies were there for security.&nbsp;

In February, the County had 299 parcels with back taxes owing abstracted.&nbsp; Today, 40 of those properties came up for sale.&nbsp;The auction is the culmination of months of work by Treasurer Jim Jordan and his team. Several members of the office’s staff were on hand, overseeing the sale and logging the results.“This is not something we want to do,” Jordan said, noting the sale is the last resort&nbsp;to recover delinquent real estate taxes. While the statutes vary by property use, most homes are not included on the sale until taxes are delinquent for at least three years.&nbsp; And with the process taking months, taxpayers are given substantial notice as well as options, such as payment plans and escrow accounts.“These taxes are what we use to pay for all the services we need and enjoy in our communities,” he said. “At the end of the day, we’re all responsible for our fair share of that tax burden.”Sheriff Brian Bellendir served as the auctioneer on behalf of B&amp;B Auction Services, which donated its services. All the tracts were sold as-is.Dereck Hollingshead, IT Director, was on hand to provide tech support; Patrick Hoffman, County Counselor, oversaw the legalities of the sale; Susan Williams, Register of Deeds, was available for assistance and Sheriff’s deputies were there for security.&nbsp;

This interactive tool offers the public, policymakers, researchers, and other partners access to information on the presence of viruses in Kansas communities. Community members will be able to access KDHE data on detections of important viruses in wastewater along with suggestions for how to stay healthy.

“The dashboard shares both our data and our interpretations clearly and transparently so people can make informed decisions about their health,” Dr. John Anderson, KDHE Informatics and Molecular Epidemiology program director, said. “Essentially, this dashboard will be another resource that Kansans can use to understand what germs are making our communities sick.”

The KDHE Informatics and Molecular Epidemiology program oversees Kansas’ wastewater pathogen monitoring, an effort to better understand disease trends by looking for viruses at wastewater treatment plants. KDHE currently monitors levels of Influenza A and B, Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) and the virus that causes COVID-19. Detecting viruses this way provides high-quality insights into disease trends, often before hospitals see an increase of patients, while remaining completely anonymous and preserving privacy.

The Kansas Wastewater Monitor for Respiratory Viruses shows data from nine wastewater treatment plants across three counties: Reno County, Shawnee County, and Johnson County. For residents of other counties, it provides a statewide summary of trends. This work is collaborative, and wastewater treatment facilities and their city or county commissioners have to opt-in to participate in the program.

With the support of participating facilities personnel, city and county commissioners, local health departments and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), this dashboard will provide critical insights for protecting Kansas communities from disease.

KDHE launches new Wastewater Monitoring Dashboard

A couple of decades ago, Brandy Loomis served people with special needs in their homes as a direct-support professional at Sunflower Diversified Services.

After taking time off to raise her daughters and earn her nursing degree, Loomis became the registered nurse at Sunflower in 2018.

Today, she is the new executive director of the non-profit agency.

“I have always just had a passion to support Sunflower’s mission to provide options to people so they can lead the most independent lives possible,” Loomis said. “It is more like a calling than a job.

“Sunflower has a great professional staff and a dedicated board of directors, which will help me make a smooth transition into this position. All of us have the same goal – to carry out the agency’s mission.”

Loomis’ residential and medical services backgrounds give her first-hand knowledge about the “day-to-day lives of the people we serve. These experiences help me understand what it takes to provide services each day with compassion and professionalism.

“This day-to-day interaction is why we are here,” she added. “Our staff members make a personal connection with individuals who count on us for support. It is the foundation of what we do.”

The near future In upcoming months, Loomis expects some state regulatory changes that will impact Day Services and Case Management.

“New regulations will certainly not prevent us from providing support to individuals,” Loomis said. “At this point, we don’t have a clear-cut blueprint to follow. When we do, I will help guide the staff and board of directors as we make adjustments.”

Loomis also is eager to address the long-time issue of the waiting list. “The state is working on this too and we will do our best to accommodate individuals as they come off this list.”

Sunflower continues to regularly collaborate with local state legislators and InterHab, keeping them informed about the agency’s needs.

InterHab, Topeka, is an association that advocates for Kansans with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Goals are independence, inclusion and innovation.

“We directly communicate with InterHab on a regular basis and recently attended one of its conferences,” Loomis noted.

Another area of focus for the short- and long-term is the recruitment of new employees. “We always look for new people and new ideas,” Loomis said. “Anyone who is considering a position at Sunflower is encouraged to contact us. The work here, in every department, is rewarding, meaningful and purposeful.”

Loomis is a 2000 graduate of Great Bend High School and earned an associate’s degree in nursing from Barton Community College. She will graduate with a bachelor’s in nursing in May at Fort Hays State University.

Loomis and her husband, Tommy, have three daughters – Emma, Hannah and Sophia.

Board of directors Lisa Burdett, speaking for the Sunflower Board of Directors, said they were fortunate to have very qualified applicants and decided that Loomis is “uniquely qualified” to take the helm.

“She has been with the agency for several years as director of medical services and has had contact with our clients and the many hard-working and dedicated staff members,” Burdett said. “Brandy believes, as do we, in the vision of the agency to allow individuals with disabilities to be the best they can be, to be provided the opportunities to achieve their fullest potential and to participate in all aspects of life.

“Brandy is a strong advocate for our clients. She understands the delicate balance required to navigate state and federal regulations with the agency’s budget constraints. The board is very excited to be working with Brandy and look forward to seeing where she takes the agency under her leadership.”

Sunflower serves infants, toddlers and adults in Barton, Pawnee, Rice, Rush and Stafford counties. It is in its 59th year.

Loomis named new executive director of Sunflower Diversified Services

Great Bend Cookie Contest organizers are throwing it back for this year’s event, scheduled Nov. 29 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in downtown Great Bend. That is to say that contest organizers are reverting back to the old donation price of $5 per voting box and bracelet to enter, a decrease in price from the last two years.

The local holiday tradition typically brings flocks of shoppers to downtown Great Bend during Small Business Saturday to sample and judge sweet treats served by Great Bend retail stores. The 17th Annual Great Bend Cookie Contest is held in conjunction with the “Home for the Holidays Parade and Festival.” As in previous years, all collected proceeds go to the Food Bank of Barton County to help feed those in need during the holiday season and beyond.

“While we are motivated to raise as much money as possible for the Food Bank, we also want to balance the cost of the event for shoppers so that they choose to enjoy their Small Business Saturday with us in downtown Great Bend,” said Anna Hammond, business development director for Rosewood Services. “We want to keep our event as fun and affordable as possible, while still raising much-needed funds for the Food Bank.”&nbsp;

The cookie contest allows people to sample cookies from participating businesses and vote for the best cookie in town. A maximum 250 shoppers have participated in the event three of the past five years. Cookie contest organizers are anticipating large participation numbers again this year and encourage shoppers to get their voting bracelets by noon on Nov. 29, otherwise, they may already be gone.

Great Bend Cookie Contest Back for 'Small Business Saturday' fun on Nov. 29

Good news met Barton County commissioners Monday morning as they met as the Board of Canvassers to canvass the ballots from the Nov. 4 general election.

Gathered in the County Clerk’s Office, they were told by County Clerk Bev Schmeidler the Nov. 6 audit of the Nov. 4 general election was once again clean. Since these random balloting checks were first implemented in 2019, “we’ve never had anything but a clean audit,” she said.

The Audit Board, a volunteer panel of four Barton County residents, looked over the results from two randomly selected precinct races – this election’s random selections were the Barton Community College Trustees (with seven candidates) and Great Bend City Council Ward 2 (with two candidates) races.

“They had to hand-count all the ballots to make sure the numbers were the same as the machines,” Schmeidler said.

Schmeidler said of the 17,048 registered voters in Barton County, 18.6 percent cast a ballot. “This is about normal”.

“Last year, with a presidential election, we had over 60% of our voters turnout.&nbsp; It would be incredible if we could meet or exceed that number in all elections.”

Commissioners Duane Reif, Tricia Schlessiger, Donna Zimmerman and Shawn Hutchinson, along with County Administrator Matt Patzner, reviewed 34 provisional ballots.

Voter Registration Clerk Darin DeWitt explained a provisional ballot allows a vote to be cast when a voter's eligibility is in question at the polling place. The ballot is considered valid only after the voter's registration issue is corrected or the required photo ID is provided before the official election canvas.

Reasons for provisional ballots varied, with the most common being a move within the county. Other reasons included rare instances of a voter lacking photo identification and minor administrative issues. Ultimately, 30 ballots were accepted, while four were rejected: one voter failed to present a photo ID and three were not registered in the county.

Schmeidler noted the canvass was held on Monday, the last possible day under state statute, because the commission did not meet on the Tuesday following the election due to Veterans Day.

The purpose of the canvass is to certify the election results. Until this was done, the election results had been unofficial.

The count Monday morning didn’t impact the outcome of any of the races from the November general election. The ballot included mayor and city council elections, BCC Trustees, the Ellinwood District Hospital Board, the Cottonwood Extension District, boards of education and a sales tax question for the City of Claflin.

Barton Co. election audit comes up clean, once again, Nov. 4 votes finalized 

The recognition of Great Bend Police Department School Resource Officer Paul Millard by the Wichita Police Department during Monday's Great Bend City Council meeting turned into a springboard for a continued debate on what to do with approximately $135,000 in unallocated funds due to the vacant assistant city administrator position. Council Member Gary Parr expanded upon his Pay it Forward idea, presented for the first time at the last council meeting, to offer some of the money to city employees as a one-time Christmas bonus in 2025.

"I think it would raise morale," he told the council. "I think their appreciation would be overwhelming. If we've got something better to do with that $135,000, then let's throw it out there. This is just an idea. I'm not blindsiding anybody. This is just an idea. It was just an idea two weeks ago."

Several council members expressed frustration after the initial proposal about the lack of time to study the issue. Parr presented two options to the council Monday. Option 1A would give all city employees who are first responders a one-time $500 bonus, which would use approximately $30,000 of the $135,000. Council Member Gary Parr expanded upon his Pay it Forward idea, presented for the first time at the last council meeting, to offer some of the money to city employees as a one-time Christmas bonus in 2025."I think it would raise morale," he told the council. "I think their appreciation would be overwhelming. If we've got something better to do with that $135,000, then let's throw it out there. This is just an idea. I'm not blindsiding anybody. This is just an idea. Parr presented two options to the council Monday. Option 1A would give all city employees who are first responders a one-time $500 bonus, which would use approximately $30,000 of the $135,000. "I'm not prepared to say yes or no on 10 minutes' notice on this. I appreciate your thinking outside of the box here. This may be a very worthy cause if it does go through."Parr said he had intended to give the council his proposals earlier in the week, but an unplanned medical situation prevented that. Council Member Jolene Biggs said that puts the rest of the council in an unfair situation."I would suggest that maybe you go back and you look at the budget a little bit, and you talk with the departments and the needs that need to be met," she told Parr. "I'm a little dismayed that, now, you've put us in a position where all these employees could possibly get a bonus when maybe we should have been looking at the budget and talking inside to see where those monies go. Now, you've created this, and are we all going to look like bad guys because we want it to be used for something else? So I'm a little dismayed with it."Current Mayor Cody Schmidt reiterated a point by Mayor-elect Alan Moeder last week, that any bonuses awarded to city employees should be the same across the board."I don't care if you're at the very bottom or the very top, you want to build morale, and you want to make everyone feel like they're part of a family, you treat every employee the same," Schmidt said.The council then heard from Brad Shirer, a retired accountant, who expressed his frustration with the proposals as a taxpayer."Governments seem to think that if they budget something, they have to spend the money," he said. "It's not sitting there in a bank account. It's a budgeted item. It's something that would have been spent over a 12-month period. Now, you're going to take it all out of the treasury and spend it all on bonuses."Parr said none of his proposals spent all the money, and that the end of the year is approaching. Schmidt and Biggs emphasized that the calendar year may be ending, but the city year is not ending. The $135,000 may be needed for future projects.
