The race is on for entrepreneurs across Barton County and beyond to apply for the 2025 IGNITE Rural Business Competition before the rapidly approaching July 1st deadline. With $95,000 in prize money on the line, there’s never been a better time to bring your business idea to life in Great Bend.

One business will walk away with the grand prize of $50,000, with additional prizes of $30,000 and $10,000 awarded, plus a $5,000 People’s Choice Award.

Barton Co. IGNITE Business Competition deadline is July 1

A big addition to Heizer Park is wrapping up and more improvements are
right around the corner for the Great Bend park. Musco installed the mini-pitch
double soccer system earlier this month. Merritt Tennis &amp; Track Systems
placed an acrylic surface on the court last week. 

Great Bend City Administrator
Logan Burns said the mini-pitch is already gaining popularity.


"Out over the weekend, there were a lot of kids out there," said Burns. "Dirt work will start for the bathroom install on June 4. Irrigation will start on June 9. This project is starting to come together for that."

Great Bend was awarded grant funds from the Land &amp; Water Conservation Fund
through the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) in the amount of
$161,260 with matching funds from the city for a total of $361,260.


The Heizer Park improvements also include a restroom facility, upgrades to the
sand volleyball and basketball court and a soccer field with new netting.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

District 1 – Cody Howland Cody Howland was elected to represent District 1. A lifelong Kansan, Cody lives in northeast Trego County where he works on his family farm. Prior to farming, he spent 14 years with Nex-Tech in Information Technology services. Cody and his wife Becky have been married for 17 years and are raising their two children, ages 15 and 11.

Cody brings valuable experience to the board, currently serving his third term on the board of directors for Golden Belt COOP in Ellis. With seven years of cooperative governance under his belt, he offers a strong background in financial management, strategic planning, and technology. Cody believes in the cooperative model and sees electric co-ops as vital to sustaining and enriching rural life in Kansas.

“Serving on a board is a great opportunity to directly impact the community it serves,” Cody said. “I’m looking forward to contributing to Western’s future, especially in areas like technology advancement, financial growth, and member engagement.”

District 2 – Frank Joy Frank Joy will continue to represent District 2 after running unopposed. We thank Frank for his continued commitment to serving our members with integrity and leadership.

District 3 – Nick Zerr Nick Zerr was also re-elected unopposed in District 3. His experience and dedication to the cooperative’s mission are greatly appreciated.

Since its inception in 2000, CUA has contributed more than $565,000to help educators enhance their curriculum by funding classroom projects, supplies, field trips, and other educational activities that enrich the student experience. I. OPENING BUSINESS: &nbsp; &nbsp;A. Call Meeting to Order. &nbsp; &nbsp;B. Recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. &nbsp; &nbsp;C. Consider Approval of the Agenda. &nbsp; &nbsp;D. Minutes of the May 20, 2025, Regular Meeting are not available. &nbsp; &nbsp;E. Any citizen wishing to make statements during the discussion of any item must first be recognized by the Commission Chair. After being recognized, that person should state their name and the name of any organization represented. Statements should be limited to five minutes. &nbsp; &nbsp;F. Please silence all phones and electronic devices. Recording the meeting is allowed and the Commission requests that anyone using special recording equipment be seated in the back row to avoid creating a distraction during the meeting.

&nbsp; &nbsp;A. ROAD AND BRIDGE: Venture and Cold Mix Preparation: &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; -Chris Schartz, County Works Director, will provide details. Earlier this year, County administrative staff met with Venture to determine a cost-effective method for enhancing cold mix operations. After that discussion, it was determined that the County would move asphalt preparation to Venture. With Venture mixing the asphalt and providing all aggregates and sand, the County can receive fresh asphalt prepared with purer ingredients. In addition, the County will avoid costs associated with on-site production, storage and material aging. Mr. Schartz will give an update on the process.

&nbsp; &nbsp;B. EXECUTIVE SESSION: &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; -Chairman Tricia Schlessiger will present. Any Commissioner may make a motion for the board to recess to executive session at this time as allowed by K.S.A. 75-4319. Any motion must contain the justification for the executive session, the subject matter to be discussed, any individuals in addition to the board who will attend the executive session and the time at which the regular session shall resume.

IV. ENDING BUSINESS – After new items are heard by the Commission, the following items, including announcements, will be heard.

Barton County Commission meeting agenda (5/27)

Back in December I wrote&nbsp;a column on symbolism and substance in politics. At the time, I was especially struck by the problem of what it means to take political rhetoric—the constant, often bizarre social media statements flooding from the White House being a great example—“seriously but not literally.” As we continue, both in Kansas and across the country, to be caught up in a political environment filled with protests and proclamations that may or may not be meant to be taken seriously, a return to the topic is in order.

Here in Wichita, the largest stand-alone city in Kansas, the biggest controversy of the past two months has been a declaration which our city council issued in support of Transgender Day of Visibility, a national occasion promoted by LGBTQ organizations. Mayor Lily Wu&nbsp;did not endorse that proclamation, though neither did she prevent the majority of council members who did support it from publicly presenting it. Since&nbsp;the relevant city ordinance seems to stipulate that the mayor must formally read any proclamation issued by the council, her action (or lack thereof) has generated&nbsp;heated debate, including&nbsp;multiple&nbsp;accusations&nbsp;both by and against the mayor.

I brought up this controversy while speaking to a civic group recently, and one participant asked a question that seemed to capture what the majority of that group seemed to be feeling: why are we fighting about entirely symbolic proclamations anyway? It’s a fair question.

Like I wrote in my previous column, it’s very easy to get frustrated over what might be broadly called “performative politics.” Often that term is used critically: you, or the church or business or interests you represent, don’t have the votes or resources to affect real change, so instead you just “perform” your demands, grabbing attention, disrupting others with your silly, symbolic claims.

But making statements, carrying signs, or organizing on behalf of recognition isn’t silly at all. Rather, these kinds of performative actions occupy a range of places within our political life.

At one end, there are those who possess actual administrative or executive authority: a CEO, a mayor, a governor, or the President of the United States. The statements such people make, even if they’re legally groundless or substantively empty, still matter, because the authority they possess will invariably influence others to take action, even if there is no basis for doing so.

On the other end, though, are just ordinary citizens, possessing no more authority than anyone else. But citizens can nonetheless take up a signs to express frustration (as sizable crowds have done almost every week over the past few months in&nbsp;Wichita,&nbsp;Kansas City,&nbsp;Hays,&nbsp;Topeka,&nbsp;Lawrence, and elsewhere), and by so doing capture the attention of others. Also, any citizen can petition elected leaders to plead for recognition for the work one does, or the identity one represents. If enough agree, then suddenly a degree of legitimacy—and, crucially, the awareness of others—is granted that didn’t exist before, empowering those who made the request.

Over the past decade, as social media has transformed political life, multiple scholars have begun to rethink democratic politics, and the place of performance and spectatorship within it. Today we live in an environment where “attention” is often the most valuable commodity anyone can possess. Those who can do the work and organize with others and put themselves forward to make sure their cause is seen (and sometimes their opponents triggered or scandalized), may not be a distraction; instead, maybe they’re doing politics the way it is fated to be played today.

Insight Kansas: On protests, proclamations, and performative politics

Eric Hein had worked at a full-time job in the past but, because of his schizophrenia symptoms, it didn’t work out too well.

Today, however, Hein is employed at Magna Dry, 1724 Main, where he performs cleaning and other custodial duties a few hours a week.

The 48-year-old Great Bend man learned about the job from Tagan Brown and Noell Miller, employment specialists at The Center for Counseling &amp; Consultation; Miller is Individual Placement &amp; Support supervisor.

Todd Clark, Magna Dry owner, noted that he has been acquainted with Brown for a few years. “He mentioned Eric to me when he stopped in one day. We needed some custodial help and thought Eric would be a good fit. And, as it turns out, we were right.

“Eric is more than willing to work and hasn’t missed a day. You don’t have to tell him what to do; he just does it. Eric does a great job and is always in a good mood. He fits in with the rest of the guys and offers to help when someone needs it.”

Clark noted that he and his staff “want to help people who just need a chance and we encourage other businesses to get involved” in The Center’s employment program.

When Hein first heard about this job possibility, he filled out an application right away. He said the work is rewarding and he enjoys being productive. He also would encourage his peers to consider employment.

Hein was quick to note that he “likes to come in to work. The job helps keep the voices away. The full-time job was too much; it caused the voices.”

Hein’s other symptom is anxiety that can be paralyzing.

When symptoms were being discussed recently, Clark immediately said, “Eric, if you are ever having a bad day, come in and hang out with us. You wouldn’t have to work, just come on in for the company.”

Tagan Brown had worked with Magna Dry in the past on behalf of another client at The Center who was living in unhealthy conditions.

“We didn’t know about this at first,” Brown said. “But when we learned about it, we did what we could so that she could live safely.”

Magna Dry supplied cleaning services at the residence at no cost.

“These kinds of relationships are important to our clients,” Brown commented. “We encourage other businesses to get involved when looking for workers.

“Most clients are more than capable of maintaining a job and it helps alleviate the stigma of having a behavioral-health concern.”

Noell Miller said the staff members at “Magna Dry are a blessing because they see the person and what they CAN do. They don’t focus on a person’s illness or condition. I am extremely grateful to Tagan and Magna Dry for supporting Eric.”

The Center’s employment program started about two years ago and has served more than 80 people. Of those, “48 clients were connected to meaningful, competitive employment,” Miller said. “For others, it didn’t work out. They left the program or got a different job.”

Employment criteria involved in the program are at least minimum wage and a job that is meaningful to the client. Brown and Miller collaborate with other departments at The Center in their efforts to help clients reach these and other goals.

“We work as a team to offer this support to people with a behavioral-health diagnosis and/or a co-occurring substance-use disorder,” Miller explained.

She also emphasized that “the client has to want to have a job. It cannot be because somebody is pushing them to find one. It is their choice.”

The employment program is just one of the benefits of The Center being licensed as a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic. Others are the housing program, medication-assisted treatment and specialized veterans’ services.

A Memorial Day salute from Eagle Media

Dive into the exciting world of the Cheyenne Bottoms marsh. Grade school campers who have completed first through sixth grade and love solving problems, exploring, creating, building, and getting outside are in for a treat with Kansas Wetlands Education Center's themed summer discovery camps.

Each camp will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the days offered. Campers can sign up for single camps or for all camps. Campers who attend all five one-day camps can attend the last two-day camp for free. Registration is required by calling 877-243-9268 or emailing&nbsp;<a href="mailto:amkern2@fhsu.edu">amkern2@fhsu.edu</a>.

There is a $10 camp fee for each day to cover materials. Campers must provide their own lunch; a morning and afternoon snack will be provided.

Tuesday, July 8 – Munching in the Marsh. This food-themed camp will help campers understand how food and nature coexist by studying the marsh ecosystem’s role in the food cycle, foraging for edible plants, perfecting campfire recipes, and filleting and cooking a fish.

Thursday, July 10 – Marshland Masterpieces. This art-themed camp will have campers inspired by the nature of the wetland to write poetry, paint or sculpt marsh scenes, photograph flora and fauna, explore through music, and use natural materials to dye a bandana.

Monday, July 14 – Marsh Flora. Campers will delve deeper into the plant world of the wetland by dissecting flowers, studying photosynthesis in action, and developing an appreciation for pollinators. Campers will create seed bombs, potpourri, and plant a terrarium.

Wednesday, July 16 – Marsh Fauna. With wetlands being one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet, there is a lot of marsh wildlife to explore. Campers will identify Cheyenne Bottoms birds, use iNaturalist for a bioblitz, dissect a wetland critter, and use construction tools to build a wooden birdhouse.

Thursday, July 24 – Marsh Splash Zone. Led by the 4-H Water Ambassador team, campers should be prepared to get wet. From playing in the water to doing scientific studies in the water, campers will get a full understanding of how water is essential to a wetland habitat. Campers will travel into Cheyenne Bottoms, testing the water quality and looking for aquatic invertebrates.

Monday and Tuesday, July 28 and 29 – Marsh Track Tales. This two-day camp will allow campers to set live traps to check the next day. From mammal traps to crayfish traps, campers can monitor how animals move through the marsh at night. They will also install trail cams to witness what happens while we are asleep.

Friday, July 25, 8:30 am - 4:00 pm – Field Biology Day Camp. Designed for older youth who have completed grades 7 – 11. This is a chance to get into the field and learn from experts in science careers. Immerse yourself in the flora and fauna of Cheyenne Bottoms, a wetland of international importance. Activities will include dove banding with Tom Bidrowski, KDWP Migratory Game Bird Program Manager, participating in the citizen science Bumble Bee Atlas program, and a trip down to the Arkansas River to monitor the stream flow at the USGS monitoring station.

Kansas Wetlands Education Center to offer camps this summer

Like many 4-H and FFA students, Rose Latta from Marysville explored different projects from sewing to photography, but it was at 4-H Discovery Days that she discovered her true passion. During a hands-on milling class, she milled a small sample of wheat and then used the flour to bake cookies — the first time she saw the entire process from kernel to finished product.&nbsp;

“I was fascinated by how milling works and how it connects to the food we consume every day,” Latta wrote in her scholarship essay. “At that moment, I realized the impact milling has on the world, and I fell in love with the process.”

Latta’s interest in flour milling and her conviction to make a tangible difference in the global food system made her the perfect recipient for the David Radenberg Memorial Scholarship, which awards one $1,000 scholarship to a current undergraduate or graduate student from Kansas who is pursuing a career in the field of agriculture.&nbsp;

The scholarship, administered by Kansas Wheat, honors the legacy of David Radenberg, a lifelong wheat farmer from Claflin and an industry leader. He represented central Kansas on the Kansas Wheat Commission from April 2011 to March 2020, including serving as chairman from August 2018 to May 2019. Radenberg was also a founding board member of the Kansas Wheat Commission Research Foundation.

In 2013, Radenberg also visited multiple Pacific Rim countries to promote U.S. wheat. The contrast between third-world poverty he saw in thriving modern cities left an impression on him and reinforced his support of wheat research to help feed a hungry world.

“David Radenberg saw clearly the connection between Kansas wheat farmers and their global consumers,” said Kansas Wheat CEO Justin Gilpin. “This year’s scholarship recipient echoes that passionate belief in how agriculture helps make the world a better place.”&nbsp;

Latta, who graduated from Marysville Junior/Senior High School in 2024, is currently pursuing a major in milling science and management at Kansas State University, complemented by minors in personal financial planning and leadership. She also works as a student employee at the Hal Ross Flour Mill, where she assists with basic maintenance tasks and mill operations. She leads mill tours, providing visitors, domestic and international, with informative and engaging explanations of the milling process.&nbsp;

Latta is an active member of the K-State Milling Science Club, Quest freshman honorary, K-State women’s wrestling club and the Sunflower 4-H Club in Marshall County, demonstrating her well-rounded dedication to her studies and community.

Latta plans to continue expanding her knowledge of milling science, refining her hands-on skills in the mill and finding new ways to contribute to the milling industry’s success.&nbsp;

She is committed to the global food system and making a lasting impact through milling.&nbsp;

“Milling is a critical part of the food system, not only in feeding humans, but also in providing food for animals and a variety of other products,” Latta wrote in her scholarship essay. “The fact that milling touches nearly everything that is consumed, whether it’s in food or other products, made me realize how important the industry is. The connection between agriculture and feeding the world is fulfilling. It gives me a sense of purpose, knowing I can help ensure people have access to the food they need to thrive.”

Tell me something good! Barton County

The drought monitor report as of Tuesday, May 20th shows a little progress with Severe drought at less than 2% and we are up to 19% totally out of dry conditions (mostly Southeast Kansas into the Northeast. Our entire area is still in moderate drought. This doesn’t include any precipitation after Monday. The six-to ten-day outlook (May 27 to 31) indicates a 40 to 60% chance of below normal temperatures and near normal for precipitation. The eight to fourteen-day outlook (May 29 to June 4) indicates normal to a 33 to 40% chance of leaning above normal for temperatures and normal for precipitation. The temperatures are beneficial for the maturing wheat crop. However, we need rain as the recent precipitation was spotty. We need rain for our summer row crops and pasture/forages.

It makes news when there is a foodborne illness outbreak or an exotic disease/ pest is a threat to our food supply/environment. It’s news because over decades through the FDA, USDA, and other federal agencies, we have developed and put in place methods to ensure as safe a food supply as possible, and keep out possible problems in not only agriculture but also the environment or contain/eliminate them if they happen. As the Congress and White House debate efficiencies and cuts, the public needs to understand these agencies and what they do. Last week we discussed the NRCS. This week, what the Animal Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) does and why it matters.

APHIS was established in 1972 during the Nixon Administration. Its origins date back to 1854 with the establishment of an entomology office and over the next century it evolved and added new responsibilities. Its mission is to “protect the health and value of American agriculture and natural resources.” One of its main missions is to protect agriculture from invasive pests and diseases so it is to closely monitor anything coming across our borders, especially foodstuffs. It houses the Chief Veterinary Officer of the U.S. APHIS serves as the point in addressing plant and animal pest/disease emergencies.

Some of the programs involve keeping out invasive species; addressing animal welfare; working on diseases that can jump from animals to humans (see the avian flu); monitoring noncompliant biotechnology; addressing animal and plant health threats within our borders; and potential agricultural bioterrorism; and more. Now for a few examples:

· Honeybee loss is a critical threat to much plant base agriculture. APHIS is involved.

· Quarantining animals to stop diseases with the screwworm problem with Mexican screwworm as recent case. Or working to contain the spread of avian flu.

· APHIS regulates biotechnology to ensure the safety of GMOs and that they don’t negatively affect the environment.

· APHIS plays a major role in inspecting products coming into the country. We live in an international economy with items entering the country from all over the world. This raises the possibility of exotic pests/diseases entering the country, and not just on our imported foodstuffs. These are a particular problem as they often lack natural controls and native plants and animals often lacking resistance or tolerance.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) have issued a public health advisory due to blue-green algae.

The water recreation season in Kansas officially runs from April 1 to Oct. 31, as do the harmful algae blooms (HAB) response program's active operations. Kansans should remain vigilant while engaging in activities taking place in or on the water, such as swimming, boating, and fishing.

A HAB may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. Blooms can develop rapidly; if the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep dogs away. These toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and even skin contact. Symptoms vary depending upon the type of exposure (e.g., direct contact, ingestion, inhalation) but can include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, and headache.

If you, or your pets, come into contact with algae rinse the area with clean, fresh water. Suspected HAB-related health incidents, whether human or animal, regardless of season, should be reported as soon as possible at<a target="_blank" href="https://links-1.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.kdhe.ks.gov%2F1163%2FReport-an-Illness%3Futm_medium=email%26utm_source=govdelivery/1/01000196fea07780-d4d14f41-00af-4007-a65d-097987185753-000000/loKP_6I989kblHK1SRtDjGGbXC7p06-ggVFOz4R4uW8=406">&nbsp;kdhe.ks.gov/1163</a>.

These amazing programs are set to begin the first of June and run through July.&nbsp; Summer activities will be offered at the Recreation Center, Activity Center, Lincoln, Jefferson, Eisenhower and Park Schools, Great Bend-Brit Spaugh Zoo, Kansas Wetlands Education Center (KWEC), and other locations throughout Great Bend.&nbsp;

Kelly’s Garden Sense welcomed community members to the greenhouse for a Great Bend Chamber ribbon cutting ceremony on May 8. The morning celebrated the addition of a new greenhouse named Franie—a cool, shaded haven dedicated to their perennial collection and the latest expansion.

What started as a dream to blend creativity and landscaping has grown into a destination offering everything from tropicals, succulents, and seasonal pottery to full-scale landscaping that can include outdoor lighting, and 3D project renderings.&nbsp;

Guests at the ribbon cutting had the chance to stroll through the new Franie greenhouse, enjoy light refreshments, and chat with Kelly’s crew about upcoming plans—including the addition of a fall pumpkin patch. Kelly’s Garden Sense is located just east of the city limits at 134 NE 10 Ave. Greenhouse hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

As Kelly says, “Why be ordinary when you can have extraordinary?”&nbsp;
