On Tuesday, June 13 at approximately 1:12 a.m., officers with the Great Bend Police Department were dispatched to the 1200 block of Jefferson in reference to a disturbance. While responding to the area, the reporting party advised a male and female left in a white Ford pickup. 

Officers located the pickup in the 1000 block of Adams Street and conducted a traffic stop. While speaking with the occupants, officers observed drug paraphernalia inside the vehicle. During a search of the vehicle, suspected methamphetamine, prescription narcotics and more drug paraphernalia was located. 

The juvenile driver was arrested along with the passenger, Martez Tyus.

Barton Co. Young Professionals hosting event to encourage running for office

At approximately 12:31 a.m. on Thursday, June 15, the Great Bend Fire Department responded to the report of a structure fire in the 5700 block of Rosewood Drive in the City of Great Bend. 

First units on scene found a single family residence with heavy smoke and fire coming from the residence. Crews made a quick interior attack and were met with high heat and heavy smoke conditions. Crews were able to quickly locate and extinguish the fire. 

While the fire was being extinguished, a search was done of the residence to make sure no one was inside. Crews did locate a family pet in the residence and was not breathing when they exited the residence. Fire crews were able to resuscitate the pet and turned the pet over to animal control for care. 

Great Bend Fire Department was assisted at the scene by the Great Bend Police Department, Kansas Gas Service and Wheatland Electric. 

The fire was investigated by an investigator with the Great Bend Fire Department and the cause is undetermined pending further investigation. The fire is not considered suspicious in nature.

Crews respond to fire on Rosewood Dr. in Great Bend

The Barton Community College Foundation invites the community to a memorial service to honor longtime donor and friend of the College Lois Alban at 2:30 p.m. June 20 at the Dorothy Morrison Chapel in the Fine Arts Building, with a reception to follow.

Lois and her late husband, Gerald (Jerry), started a decades-long tradition of supporting the Barton Foundation in 1989 when they first attended the Big Benefit Auction and joined the association's Buffalo Club with the top bid for ‘Old Bill,’ the buffalo mount which is auctioned each year. The Albans later began participating in the Academic Enrichment Fund, and in 1993, they established the G.E. and Lois Alban Academic Scholarship to benefit students majoring in business or fine arts.

Lois and Jerry believed people should give back to their community, especially one that nurtures and contributes to individual success. In appreciation of their commitment to Barton, they were awarded the 1999 Distinguished Service Award by the Barton Foundation in recognition of their outstanding service to Barton and its students. Jerry passed away in 1997, but Lois continued to promote academic opportunities for students in the years since and was later honored as a member of the Barton Legacy Society. The Legacy Society recognizes donors who have arranged to make gifts through trusts, wills, or estates at their passing.

Lois, age 97, passed away on April 28 in Springfield, Mo. She was born in Great Bend, where she graduated high school and spent much of her adult life. She will be greatly missed, and the Foundation is honored to help celebrate her life well lived.

Barton Foundation to host memorial for Lois Alban

This is day 1 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.

Wheat harvest in Kansas started off slow, with some farmers test cutting in south central Kansas as early as June 7. The outlook of rain in the forecast really got combines rolling on June 13, but storms moved through the area again Tuesday evening and sent farmers out of the fields. Rainfall amounts ranged from .70″&nbsp;in Hutchinson to over 2″&nbsp;in Newton.

Martin Kerschen, a Garden Plain area wheat farmer, reported that he received an inch of rain Wednesday morning, but he has no complaints. He has harvested about 15,000 bushels so far, and yields are ranging from 30 to 45 bushels per acre on&nbsp;continuous wheat&nbsp;fields.

“We’ve received only 6″&nbsp;of rain on this wheat, with 3 ½″&nbsp;coming in the last month and salvaging a dismal crop,” he said, crediting excellent genetics for its drought tolerance. Before the rain, he started harvesting a double crop field of wheat after corn, and it was averaging only about 15 bushels per acre.

Corey Meal of MKC’s Castleton location reported that they took in their first load on June 9. While it’s very early in harvest, so far test weights are averaging 61 pounds and protein 11.5%. Moisture is still high, with Tuesday’s wheat at 14-15% moisture.&nbsp;

Meal expects the location will see fewer bushels this year, only 60 to 75% of last year. While a few fields in the area have been baled for straw, the lower bushels are primarily due to lower yields this year caused by the ongoing drought. He said he’s seen fields in the area with some weed pressure coming in.

Chris Stevens of Farmers Coop Grain Assn in Conway Springs reported they took in their first load on June 7, but they’re only 5-8% complete so far.&nbsp;

“Harvest just can’t get going,” he said, reporting that they’ve received hit and miss showers over the last week. Stevens expects to take in only half of the bushels they normally receive, saying yields in the area aren’t good and will probably average about half of last year’s yields.&nbsp;

One potential bright spot is that the test weights are decent, above 60 pounds per bushel so far, and he thought yields may end up being a bit better than farmers expected before they received some early summer rains.

He says harvest will wrap up in about 14 days once it gets started. Forecasts for next week are calling for hot and dry weather, but they called for that this week and it ended up raining several days. Stevens said weeds are coming into the fields.

For farmers who are seeing weed pressure, there are a few options available. Farmers should contact their local extension office or agronomist for herbicide choices. In addition, Sarah Lancaster, KSU Weed Management Specialist, authored an article on pre-harvest weed control in wheat. Day 1, Kansas Wheat Harvest Report

Construction progress is coming along on Barton Community College’s new
Ag Technology Center on the east side of the Great Bend campus. Roughly 75% of
the concrete has been poured and the steel structure is up on the 14,000
square-foot facility that will house a Top Tech Program to provide training to
become Case New Holland technicians. 

Along with the equipment technician
program, the facility will provide a space for the CDL program, crop protection
and animal science program. Barton’s Executive Director of Workforce Training
Mary Foley said agriculture students will be provided chances to learn with
livestock on campus. "This will be hands-on experience for students," said Foley. "They get that experience now because we take them on numerous fieldtrips, but when your class is only two hours and you have to drive 20 or 30 minutes to get to your fieldtrip site, it doesn't provide you much time to get that hands-on experience. This will allow us to bring animals to campus and for the students to get more time." 
Harbin Construction is handling the $3.2 million construction project with many
local subcontractors assisting. Barton was awarded an ARPA grant from the
Kansas Department of Commerce for the development. The federal award is a
matching grant up to $1.8 million. Barton Foundation Director Lindsey Bogner
said finding the matching funds from donors is still a work in progress. "We have two large in-kind donations that I'm still getting values for," said Bogner. "We're getting a new tractor and a scale. We're going to have those updates, number wise for the match for the grant, next time. Right now, we are meeting with one of our largest potential donors on Friday. Hopefully, we'll have some good news." 
Barton has to have the rest of the grant money matched by next June. The Top
Tech Program has availability for 16 students, and Barton currently has three
students ready to enroll for the fall semester.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Barton’s new Ag Center to provide variety of learning opportunities

The Barton County Fair is less than a month away. Before the fair begins on Wednesday, July 5, some small renovations need to be made to the Expo III building. County Administrator Matt Patzner laid out the issue to the Barton County Commission Wednesday morning.

"In the Barton County Fair Board's 2023 budget request meeting, the Barton County Fair Association detailed need to improve emergency exits and lighting, as well as accessibility, at Expo III. With the upgrades made, the Fair Association requests that the county contribute $5,000 to the $7,969.33 project."

Barton County Fair Treasurer Kate Wary clarified that the upgrades have yet to be made, stressing the short window between Wednesday's meeting and the start of the fair to have the work done.

"We had to write the check to get on their schedule because the improvements have to be made before we can open the fair because the buildings aren't up to code, as is, without the exit lighting and stuff."

Commission Chair Shawn Hutchinson further clarified how much the fair board needed versus how much was requested, and the county's obligations to the fair under its normal budget. The fair did come in under budget in 2022 but those extra funds have since been transferred elsewhere. 

"I'm all in favor of supporting the Barton County Fair," Hutchinson said. "They're not asking for a lot in the scheme of things. I would love it if someone would make a motion for the ($7,969.33) plus $500. Let's put it up to a vote."

Wary said contractors have assured the fair board the work will be completed by July 5. The commission approved to pay all $7,969.33 for the renovations, plus an additional $500 to be used for advertising. Hutchinson stipulated that money should be used to promote the carnival, which returns to the fair for the first time since 2019. With no carnival for Ellinwood's After Harvest Festival in July or Hoisington's Labor Day Celebration in September, the Barton County Fair carnival will be the only one in the county this year.

Expo III building to be revamped prior to Barton Co. Fair

Disney classics have provided the soundtrack to many a childhood. With approval from the USD 428 Board of Education Monday night, the Great Bend High School band will now get to make its own music at Disney World in Orlando, Fla. GBHS Band Director Grant Mathews outlined a Spring Break trip for the upcoming school year for the board.

"Trips are a good way for the students to build camaraderie and give us a sense of our band family being together through shared experiences like those kinds of trips," he said. "Then it gives us a chance to take what we do here locally, whether it's performing parades or outreach things, and expanding that into some other world, like Disney World."

The band last traveled to Kansas City as part of a 3-day trip right before the COVID-19 pandemic. With Monday's approval, the band will now join the 3-year rotation with other pieces of the music department at GBHS.

"By the time they got back from the trip, everything had shut down," Mathews said. "We haven't been on any excursions since then. We had a discussion about getting back to a good rotation of trips with the music department."

Mathews liked the direction of taking a trip every two years instead of every three years, but making the trips larger. The upcoming trip to Orlando will include approximately 60 band students and eight sponsors. The trip will include playing some Disney hits and Kansas classics during a march down Main Street of the Magic Kingdom. Mathew is also trying to secure a jazz band performance at Universal Studios. The trip will also include a stop at Kennedy Space Center and a local beach.

"It's a lot to cram into one trip," said Mathews, "but if you're going to drive that far once in a while, you want to get as much out of it as you can.

Mathews reached out to two charter companies for travel accommodations. Each student will need to come up with approximately $1,950 to make the trip. Planned fundraisers included poinsettia and popcorn sales, a recent candy bar fundraiser, a chili supper, and a potential garage sale-type event in the future. 

"Our top fundraisers have maybe $300-400 in their account right now," Mathew said, "so it's going to be a quick, short, hard stretch to get all that money together."

Board approves Great Bend High School band trip to Florida

The City of Great Bend staff has been working with Athco for the design
and construction of a new splash pad to be installed on the north side of
Veterans Memorial Park. The first design for the $680,000 project was released
and will go before the Great Bend City Council next Monday for approval. 

The project
will be funded through the .15% quality of life sales tax and Mayor Cody Schmidt
felt the size of the project was the right fit. "You can always scale that project back and end up with a $300,000 or $400,000 splash pad, but our thought is to do it right the first time," said Schmidt. "We don't want to have to go back and add on because it's too small or there's not enough features for the kids to play."

On a Wednesday afternoon in December, however, lives were changed forever when two vehicles converged on the intersection at the same time.

A 21-year-old driver from Mississippi was northbound at the intersection when his Dodge pickup struck a Saturn SUV that had entered the intersection from the east. Seventeen-year-old Trace Ritterhouse of Ellinwood barely survived the crash which killed two people, including Ritterhouse's best friend.

"When Trace arrived in the trauma unit at Wesley, they didn't give us much hope of him surviving the night," said Trace's mother, Sandra Hopkins. "He has what's called a DAI of the corpus callosum. That was the most severe of his injuries. That was the main brain injury. Usually, less than 10 percent survival."

A diffuse axonal injury, or DAI, is a stretching or shearing of white matter fibers in the brain. The corpus callosum is a bundle of nerve fibers that allows the brain to communicate with other vital organs in the body, such as the heart and lungs. Trace made it through the first 24 hours, but doctors turned their concerns to the next three days.

"He wasn't showing much progress after that 72 hours," Hopkins said. "He was having what's called 'brainstorming.' The DAI of the corpus callosum is, in a nutshell, where the brain talks to the rest of the body, and the two hemispheres communicate back and forth. Trace's was sheared."

While Trace remained in a coma, a bolt was inserted into his skull so doctors could monitor pressure from swelling. Nearly a month after the Dec. 7 accident, doctors were ready to remove part of Trace's skull to relieve the pressure. A CT scan confirmed the decision, but an MRI indicated the bolt was not working correctly. Doctors decided to bring Trace out of the medically-induced coma. He was barely responsive coming out of the coma, but was transferred to Madonna Rehabilitation Hospitals in Lincoln, Neb. on Jan. 5.

"That is not really opening his eyes, not responding to stimulation, no words, no anything," Hopkins said. "He was pretty much just there."

But Trace continues to defy the odds with one miracle after another. He's closing in on level six on the scale, and can now communicate, walk, and eat with limitations. The brain injury weakened the entire left side of his body, making walking and speaking difficult. 

"He has very little short-term memory so we have the same conversations multiple times a day, but his long-term memory is coming back," said Hopkins. "He's remembering his friends, places he went, and things about home.

"He started singing to songs this weekend. That's the first time he's done that. His long-term, every day something new pops into his mind that he remembers from the past."

Trace is likely to return home before the end of the month. Even six months after the crash, doctors are unsure of how far Trace will progress.

"That's one thing I've learned about Madonna," Hopkins said. "They do not give a prognosis. Every brain injury is different. Everybody's healing is different. He has made amazing strides and they've been very consistent in saying you wake up one day and that may be as far as he ever goes. But Trace has proven otherwise."

Even a homecoming is proving to be difficult. The Hopkins hired a contractor to help bring Trace's home into ADA compliance. The project was a massive failure but local contractors have stepped in to fix the mess. Richard Doll at Doll Insurance has provided a crew, and Colton Garrett has taken over the remodel with an eye for details. 

Other businesses, friends, and complete strangers have held fundraisers for Trace and his family. Kayla Rhoades helped line up contractors to fix the bathroom debacle and started a fundraiser. A Medicine Lodge woman, a survivor who overcame her own traumatic brain injury to become a trauma nurse, has proven to be an invaluable resource.

"I have been completely overwhelmed, to the point of tears, on numerous occasions, by how much our village has risen to the occasion of supporting Trace and our family," said Hopkins. "The outpouring of support and prayers, not just from Ellinwood but from Barton County as a whole. His story has spread all over the country. I get messages from people from all over the country that they're following his story and what an incredible inspiration he has been. The support and love shown to our family, there are no words to describe it. He has touched many lives."

Trace's time at Madonna may be coming to an end but his goals are not. He is saving one of his biggest for his return to Ellinwood.

"Trace has developed enough cognition that he has set his own goals," said Hopkins. "His main goal when he goes home is he wants to walk into our home. He says, 'I don't want to go in the first time this wheelchair. I want to walk in.'"

A family friend has already constructed a wheelchair ramp at the house for Trace, and Sandra said that level of community support has been a saving grace for the family.

"I want our community to know that their prayers have worked," she said. "Their support is working miracles. Trace continues to astonish us every day with everything they said he would never be able to do. He's breaking all the rules.

"Trace's amazing recovery wouldn't have been possible without the medical staff and therapists at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital.  Their state-of-the-art equipment and personnel are second to none. Angels work and miracles happen within these walls. In the nearly six months we have been here, they have truly become family."&nbsp;

Multiple fundraisers have been held for Trace and family over the past six months. Sunflower Bank in Ellinwood is still accepting donations that will go directly into a savings account for the family. Checks can be made to Sandra Hopkins with "Trace Ritterhouse" in the memo line. Funds can also be sent directly to the family via the Venmo app.

Trace is the son of Hopkins and Lyle Ritterhouse, and Anthony Hopkins is his bonus dad.

Determining the health of your trees is largely based on the amount of new growth each year. Observe the tips of the branches that are exposed (not shaded). A tree that grows less than 4 inches from the previous year is likely under stress and considered unhealthy.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 

Meristems are the part of the tree where new cells are formed and growth takes place. Apical meristems are at the branch tips. Growth here increases the canopy of the tree. New growth from these meristems is often identifiable by the color. The new twig emerging from the bud may be greener but the leaves are often a brighter shade as well. You'll notice the leaves attached directly to these new stems rather than lateral branches. New growth may also look more compressed than growth from previous years.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 

Though evaluating the amount of growth can help you determine if your tree is healthy, it does not tell you what may be the cause of an unhealthy tree. The effects of stress accumulate year after year. A drought two years ago can have an impact on growth of a recovering tree. The root growth may have been stunted and roots could struggle to take in enough water to support the tree as temperatures rise. When possible, ensure trees are receiving water to a depth of 12 inches every couple of weeks during the summer either from rain or supplemental watering.&nbsp;

One of the more common means of watering trees is the use of soaker hoses.&nbsp; Soaker hoses are notorious for non-uniform watering. On small trees, circling the tree several times with the soaker hose will even out the amount of water applied but this isn't practical for larger trees.&nbsp; On larger trees, hooking both the beginning and the end of the soaker hose to a Y-adapter helps equalize the pressure and therefore provide a more uniform watering. The specific parts you need include the soaker hose, Y-adapter and female to female connector.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 

The soaker hose can circle the trunk at a distance within the dripline of the tree but at least ½ the distance to the dripline. The dripline of the tree is outermost reach of the branches.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 

Soil should be wet at least 12 inches deep as 80% of a trees roots are in the top foot of soil.&nbsp; Use a metal rod, wooden dowel, electric fence post or something similar to check depth. Dry soil is much harder to push through than wet and your probe will stop when it hits dry soil.&nbsp; How long it takes water to reach a 12 inch depth varies depending on the rate of water flow and soil.&nbsp; Record the amount of time it takes to reach 12 inches the first time the tree is watered.&nbsp; After that, simply water for that same amount of time.&nbsp;

BOOR: Watering trees

On Sunday, June 11 at approximately 1:42 a.m., officers with the Great Bend Police Department conducted a traffic stop in the 1800 block of Patton Road for an illegal license plate. During the traffic stop, K9 Menta was deployed to conduct a free air sniff, where she alerted to the presence of illegal narcotics. &nbsp; While searching the vehicle, Officers located methamphetamine, marijuana and drug paraphernalia.&nbsp; The driver of the vehicle, Kristopher Clone, age 39, and the passenger of the vehicle, Hailey Anne Lewis, age 24, were placed under arrest for possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Both Clone and Lewis were transported to the Barton County Jail where they were booked in lieu of a $10,000 bond.&nbsp; Once at the Barton County Jail, more narcotics were located on the persons of Clone and Lewis. Pair arrested in Great Bend for trafficking drugs into jail 

Over the last two years, the Barton County Commission has allocated hundreds of thousands of dollars to businesses to beautify area downtowns through the Facade Improvement Program. Wednesday morning, the commission joined forces with the city of Great Bend and the K-State Research and Extension Master Gardeners to upgrade landscaping to the west side of the Barton County Courthouse. Commission Chair Shawn Hutchinson led the charge to allocate a $5,000 match with the city of Great Bend to get the project started.

"I think one of the commissioners - I don't remember which one of us - said it would be kind of silly of us to do all the Facade Improvement Program we've implemented in the city of Great Bend but also in the other cities, and not take care of our own courthouse square," Hutchinson said. "I'm more than 100 percent in favor of moving forward with this."

The commission held a joint meeting with the Great Bend City Council last Thursday. Councilmember Jolene Biggs attended Wednesday's commission meeting to explain that water work and landscaping near the Jack Kilby statue could begin while the courthouse HVAC renovation is being completed. Biggs and Commissioner Tricia Schlessiger agreed maintenance would be key to the longevity of the beautification project. The Master Gardners will help with upkeep, and Jan Keeley with the group also explained an educational aspect of the project.

"We will also have identification of every plant of different kind that you can scan, find out the name of it, and how to care for it," she said.

Kyle's Lawn &amp; Tree Care LLC will provide the plants and installation. The upgrade will include trees, bushes, and flowers anchored by the Jack Kilby statue.

 </figure>By MIKE COURSON Great Bend PostOver the last two years, the Barton County Commission has allocated hundreds of thousands of dollars to businesses to beautify area downtowns through the Facade Improvement Program. Wednesday morning, the commission joined forces with the city of Great Bend and the K-State Research and Extension Master Gardeners to upgrade landscaping to the west side of the Barton County Courthouse. Commission Chair Shawn Hutchinson led the charge to allocate a $5,000 match with the city of Great Bend to get the project started."I think one of the commissioners - I don't remember which one of us - said it would be kind of silly of us to do all the Facade Improvement Program we've implemented in the city of Great Bend but also in the other cities, and not take care of our own courthouse square," Hutchinson said. "I'm more than 100 percent in favor of moving forward with this."<figure>

 </figure>The commission held a joint meeting with the Great Bend City Council last Thursday. Councilmember Jolene Biggs attended Wednesday's commission meeting to explain that water work and landscaping near the Jack Kilby statue could begin while the courthouse HVAC renovation is being completed. Biggs and Commissioner Tricia Schlessiger agreed maintenance would be key to the longevity of the beautification project. The Master Gardners will help with upkeep, and Jan Keeley with the group also explained an educational aspect of the project."We will also have identification of every plant of different kind that you can scan, find out the name of it, and how to care for it," she said.Kyle's Lawn &amp; Tree Care LLC will provide the plants and installation. The upgrade will include trees, bushes, and flowers anchored by the Jack Kilby statue.

Barton Co. & City of Great Bend come together to beautify courthouse

TOPEKA, Kan. –&nbsp;The 2024 Class 1A DI State Basketball Championships are headed to the Colby Event Center&nbsp;March&nbsp; 6-9, 2024, while class 2A will compete at the United Wireless Arena in Dodge City.

The KSHSAA maintains a very strong relationship with Visit Manhattan and Kansas State University however this year’s KSHSAA State Basketball Championships conflict with the final week of the Big 12 Conference regular season. Kansas State expressed desire to host a home game for one or both of their basketball teams should that opportunity arise. Accordingly, it was necessary for the KSHSAA to consider alternative locations to conduct the seven basketball tournaments.

“After conversations with many around the state, the Colby Event Center is the best facility to host a state basketball tournament in 2024 as we work through the 2024 season with Bramlage Coliseum not being an option,” said Kyle Doperalski, KSHSAA Assistant Executive Director. “The City of Colby along with its events center staff will do a marvelous job hosting a state tournament for our athletes, coaches and fans to enjoy. The facility has been in operation for two years and boasts a lot of features and amenities our teams and fans will appreciate and will make a perfect fit for Class 1A-DI’s state tournament. Dodge City will continue it’s tradition of top notch event management providing Class 2A a championship level experience in United Wireless Arena.”

The Colby Event Center in Colby, KS was opened in 2021 and plays host to Colby Community College and the Orange and Black basketball tournament along with many other events year-round. This will be the first KSHSAA State Basketball Championship held in Colby.

United Wireless Arena has hosted many state events since 2015 including hosting 1A DI State Basketball Championship last year as well as the 2A and 1A DI State Volleyball Championships the last four years.

Developing a partnership between Barton Community College and Medicalodges
in Great Bend was somewhat personal for Barton’s Vice President of Instruction
Elaine Simmons. Her mother moved into the long-term care facility and Elaine
noticed areas that could improve to provide the best healthcare. 

After months
of meetings and conversations, Barton and Medicalodges announced an
apprenticeship program that will combine classroom instruction and paid,
on-the-job training for Registered Nursing, Licensed Practical Nursing,
Certified Nurse Aide and Dietary Manager. "When you start engaging with organizations and businesses about things they're interested in and things they need, there's a lot that goes with that," said Simmons. "With apprenticeships, there's a lot of homework. Medicalodges was all over it. They met deadlines and milestones."

Medicalodges has more than 1,600 employees and 30 locations across Kansas,
Missouri and Oklahoma. They provide continuum of care for older adults and
those living with developmental disabilities. Simmons was excited the new
academy could boost employment issues with healthcare in the area. 
"An apprenticeship gives the opportunity for the individual to learn while they earn," said Simmons. "They will be on the payroll. As they do their spot checks, training and mentoring...eventually they will complete the program and receive a certificate from the U.S. Department of Labor." 
At Tuesday’s Barton Board of Trustees study session, staff also mentioned the
college is working with The University of Kansas Health System – Great Bend
Campus to create similar apprenticeship programs.

Barton’s apprenticeship could boost area healthcare employment

The fate of a school district hangs on an upcoming vote on Aug. 1. In January, the USD 112 Central Plains Board of Education voted 5-2 to close Wilson High School at the conclusion of the 2022-23 school year. Last month, a Wilson group countered by filing a petition to disorganize the district. Jeremy Liebl, a Claflin High School graduate, says the implications of the Aug. 1 vote are huge.

"With a 'no' vote, they still get to keep a school, that's guaranteed because there's just no room in the Central Plains Elementary School for more kids," he said. "They'd still get to keep a school open, and they could also still seek a land transfer after it's all done. It seems like it'd be the best option for everybody."

Given the unprecedented nature of a disorganization vote, no one is quite sure what will happen if residents in the USD 112 voting district that spans parts of five counties vote for the disorganization. The Wilson contingent hopes it will create the opportunity to keep Wilson High School open. Opponents of a "yes" vote believe disorganization would be just that, resulting in the closure of all three remaining school buildings in the district. 

With a "no" vote on Aug. 1, USD 112 would remain intact, as is, with Wilson High School closed. Central Plains High School in Claflin, Central Plains Elementary School in Holyrood, and Wilson Elementary School in Wilson would remain open. With a "yes" vote, the Kansas State Board of Education would enter the fray and make decisions moving forward. Liebl fears outsiders may not fully understand small-town pride.

"We're in a unique spot," he said. "Even if you sent it to the state, I don't know if they would fully understand in Topeka what unique situation we actually have here of young people, having a pride where you grew up, and wanting to raise your family in that small town that you grew up in."

Liebl graduated from the now-defunct Claflin High School. The Wildcats joined rival Quivira Heights for what became Central Plains High School. The CPHS Class of 2023 was the last class that had ties to either of the previous schools.

"Now everybody else, this is all they've known," Liebl said. "All the friendships we've developed over the last 12-13 years, would almost be thrown out the window."

According to the Facebook page United USD 112, the closure of all three remaining buildings in the district would eliminate 107 full-time education jobs in Barton, Ellsworth, Russell, and Rice counties. Liebl understands the frustration of losing a high school but said a "yes" vote would mean even bigger losses.

"We've all lost little parts of our schools," he said. "Claflin lost a K-6. Bushton lost a K-12. Holyrood lost a 7-12. Lorraine lost a school. I'm sure Dorrance had a school. Everybody has lost something but we've been able to keep a piece of something to where you still have something. That would be what would happen here with a 'no' vote. It's very, very stressful."
