A Barton County woman readily acknowledged that she was skeptical – to say the least - about the Parent Project.

Now, she is eager to spread the word about what she learned and how her relationship with her daughter has improved.

Parent Project is a Juvenile Services (JS) program that consists of one class a week for 10 consecutive weeks from 6 to 9 p.m., usually on Tuesdays, at 1800 12th. The next one starts Sept. 12.

There is no cost; participants receive a homecooked meal and class materials.

The mom who attended the recent classes said her daughter was physically abusive and defiant. She lied and broke things.

“She didn’t like me taking this class but she is coming around,” the mother said. “For example, physical aggression is not an issue now.”

One of the more useful tools is called TEASPOT, which stands for Take Everything Away for a Short Period of Time.

“TEASPOT means I take away her phone, computer, TV, and in many cases, I take the door off her bedroom,” the mom said. “There is a specific time established for this to end. The shortest period was one hour, the longest seven days.

“The big things for me are consistency, being direct and following through,” she added.

The mother and daughter compiled a “house contract,” which is working for them. They also use a “Stop/Think” card.

“When she acts like she is going to do or say something inappropriate, I hold up the card. She stops and thinks before she does or says anything,” the mom reported.

In addition to the changes in her daughter, the mom now uses a calmer tone of voice, which leads to fewer arguments.

“I strongly encourage parents to consider this class,” the mom commented. “There is so much information. I don’t see how you couldn’t get something out of this class.

“I learned from other parents and now realize I am not alone.”

CASEY ROWLAND The mother emphasized her appreciation for Casey Rowland, JS family engagement advocate who leads Parent Project.

“Casey is always here for me,” she said. “Thanks to her, my daughter is doing better and I am handling things differently. Casey also encourages parents in the class to keep in touch with one another, which many of us do.”

Rowland said “we have parents dealing with out-of-control teenagers, while others report issues such as talking back and not obeying the rules.

“Our classes are designed for these situations and everything in between. Everyone is welcome – even parents of adult children.”

Rowland works with parents individually, if they choose. These interactions can be prior to the classes beginning, during the 10-week course, and/or after the sessions wrap up.

“Even though the classes may be over, I am not going anywhere; I am always here for the parents,” Rowland noted.

She added that the mother in this story was “always attentive and did the work involved. She was invested in this and now her daughter is too. I appreciate her and all the parents I work with.”

Rowland encourages attendance at all sessions because the curriculum is structured and each class builds on the ones before.

Incentives to attend include gifts, gift cards and the homemade meal, which JS staff prepares. Sometimes parents choose to order out.

“We just hope you learn some things that help in day-to-day life,” Rowland summarized. “It is good to remember that everyone makes mistakes. When that happens, we re-group.”

The Kansas Department of Corrections-Juvenile Services finances the classes; the child doesn’t have to be a JS client.

Barton Arts Movement announced a new mural for Barton County to enjoy, just completed by local artist Melanie Ryan. This was originally planned to go elsewhere in downtown Great Bend, but after a last minute hiccup, Dilly &amp; Doc allowed a space to move this selfie backdrop to their building.&nbsp;

Paid internships/apprenticeships through Ogallala Commons provide work experience and professional skill-building that is essential for transitioning from school to the realities of a full-time career.

Paid internships available with the City of Russell

The Barton County Fair has released their entertainment lineup for next week’s county fair.

The board has changed the location of the stage venue this year. The stage will be located in the grassed area, under the trees, behind the SRCA concession stand/ tower at the Expo Complex. Another change for this year is seating. It is limited and concert goers are encouraged to bring their own lawn chair or rent a chair for a dollar.

The music entertainment will start off Wednesday, July 5 at 7 p.m., in the First Kansas Bank Educational Building (Expo II). The free stage will feature a local band Mana Vault. This is a free concert. Mana Vault will perform Blues Rock.

On Thursday, July 6 at 8:15 p.m., the public will again enjoy another night of free music when Nashville Christian artist Katy Nichole hits the stage. “If I had one thing that I could say to people, it’s that God is a God of healing,” according to Katy.

Singer/songwriter, and new Centricity Music signee, Katy Nichole has an unwavering belief in God’s ability to heal and the power of prayer have swiftly turned her into a viral sensation thanks to her debut single, “In Jesus Name (God of Possible),” now sound-tracking millions of personal stories on TikTok and Instagram. The song, however, finds its genesis in Katy’s own narrative—a miraculous story of suffering, hope, and ultimately, healing.

RICE COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 8a.m. Monday in Rice County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1980 Suzuki driven by Christopher Leo Detmer, 66, Lyons, was westbound&nbsp;on U.S.56 just west of 11th Road.

The motorcycle rear-ended a 2018 International semi driven by Gerald Todd&nbsp;Aguilera, 61, Chase, who was slowing or stopped to make a turn.

Detmer was thrown from the motorcycle and landed in the north ditch. EMS transported him to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. Aguilera and a passenger in the semi were not injured. Detmer was wearing a helmet and the occupants of the semi properly restrained, according to the KHP.

This week I had several of our 4-H Ambassadors assist me in preparing some publicity for the Barton County Fair. Thursday, July 6th, we’ll start off our day with the Business Appreciation Breakfast &amp; Chamber Coffee! All are welcome, and be sure to check out all of the great foods, photography, woodworking, entomology exhibits and much more!

Livestock shows are a regular part of many county fairs. Parker Dicks and the Barton County Ambassadors invite you to check out the Swine Show on Thursday at 9 am, Horse Halter Classes on Thursday at 3 pm, Bucket Calf Show on Thursday at 6 pm, the Sheep and Goat Show on Friday at starting at 8 am, the Beef Show on Friday at 5 pm, and the Horse Show on Saturday at 8 am. Round Robin is an event where the top showman of each species compete against one another for the overall best showman or woman! Round Robin has been moved to Saturday, July 8 at 4 pm!

BERAN: It’s just about Fair week

As of now, proponents of allowing chickens within Great Bend city limits are not going away quietly. At the Great Bend City Council meeting June 5, the governing body voted 4-3 to clearly state there is a ban on harboring chickens within city limits. Two weeks later, citizen Kathryn Schaffner reappeared at the next council meeting to speak during the open comments section of the agenda. Schaffner expressed the importance of having personal liberty where she lives. "Backyard hens build community," said Schaffner. "In the time that I had my flock, my neighbors benefitted from extra eggs and education for their children. My flock helped knit my community together. Now, people that still have their hens at least until someone's outs them, are afraid to share or have friends in their yard because they're afraid to lose their pets and sustainable protein sources. Community is not held together by fear but torn apart."&nbsp;&nbsp;

"When much of the city's revenue comes from property taxes, it just doesn't make sense to discourage growth with arbitrary decisions such as the ban," said Schaffner. "Responsible people aren't moving because there are too few abatements. They're moving because they don't feel represented or protected."

Great Bend’s animal control services was in favor of the continued ban and arguments against allowing chickens cited tending to chicken violations, the city’s struggle to enforce current abatements and the police department staff being utilized for chicken-related violations.

Barton County Sheriff's booking activity (6/23 - 6/25)

Brent Smith had been serving as the interim fire chief since early
February. He was appointed as Great Bend’s fulltime fire chief last week.
Although he performed the same duties for nearly five months, he woke up the morning
after being officially appointed and asked his wife, “What do I do?”. Smith got
dressed, went to the gym and went back to work doing what he loves to do. He did change it up by bringing doughnuts to both fire stations and City Hall that morning. 

As
fire chief, Smith has stressed the importance of having good communication
amongst the crew. "I'm trying some different things to make the guys feel included in what we do and what I do," said Smith. "Nothing we do is top secret. For years in the fire service, you've always treated it as such. It's not, so why treat it that way? Give them the information so they feel a part of where we're going." 
To help with communication and transparency, Smith sends out an email every
Friday to everyone employed with the Great Bend Fire Department that outlines
everything the administration is doing within the department. "That email is anywhere from two to four pages depending on what we have going on," said Smith. "I've done it every Friday since I started as interim chief and I plan on continuing that until I retire." 
After spending 16 years as captain in Sedgwick County prior to coming to Great
Bend as the deputy chief in 2019, Smith didn’t envision becoming a fire chief so soon in his
career.

"When I came here, the former chief and myself were close to the same age," said Smith. "You have that understanding that we'll both probably retire at about the same time. I loved being the deputy chief with hands on with training. Things happen. I got the opportunity to do something that I was probably going to do later in my career."

Now that he is a fire chief, he wants his crew to have involvement in
the department and know that management trusts them. 
"I believe in letting people make their mistakes," said Smith. "We'll discuss afterwards on maybe things we could have done differently. We'll use it as a learning moment instead of the person feeling like someone always has their thumb on them and are scared to do anything for getting in trouble."

unchanged from last week.&nbsp; The six to ten-day
outlook (June 27 to July 1) indicates leaning to a 40 to 50% chance of leaning
to above normal temperatures and a 33 to 40% chance of leaning to above normal precipitation.&nbsp; The eight to fourteen-day outlook (June 29 to
July 5) indicates a continued 33 to 50% chance of leaning to above normal temperatures
and a 33 to 40% chance of above normal precipitation.&nbsp; While the extreme drought is still present,
continued above normal chances for precipitation should keep summer row crops
and forages going as long as the area can avoid long periods of extreme heat.&nbsp; Certainly, much better than the last two
summers.

Today, with the calendar about to
hit July and not much of a wheat harvest to consider, let’s discuss organic
food.&nbsp; This isn’t to say good or bad,
right or wrong, but what is “organic” in the market place.&nbsp; Keep in mind, that economists basically say
consumers have preferences and want what they want.&nbsp; They won’t purchase what they don’t want, no
matter how good the product might be.&nbsp;
Finally, before starting, the real definition of organic is simply carbon
containing compounds.&nbsp; So basically, all
the food produced is “organic.”&nbsp; Here, we
are dealing with organic food in the marketplace.&nbsp; What is “organic” food?

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; In
agriculture, producing organic products certified organic is fairly
specific.&nbsp; There are standards meet and
maintained as stipulated by the Federal Government.&nbsp; For instance, no GMO crops, types of pest
control and production methods, and so on.&nbsp;
You keep records and are inspected.&nbsp;
You may then market your production as certified organic.&nbsp; This is useful not only within the country,
but in certain export situations.&nbsp; One
example, though not certified organic, is GMO grain.&nbsp; Some countries or groups such as the EU prohibit
the import of certain GMO crops.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; For
the consumer, organic is a nebulous label for those truly trying to eat
certified organic crops, either at home or in restaurants.&nbsp; Sometimes the label is a bit misleading.&nbsp; A classic example is non-GMO salt.&nbsp; It’s not possible to genetically modify table
salt.&nbsp; If, as a consumer, you are trying
to strictly eat organic products it’s not as easy as reading a label.&nbsp; Without going into all the details, different
products have various wording regarding organic.&nbsp; It may sound odd as you would think something
is certified organic or not, but there are “levels” of organic and you are
supposed to be able to read the label and tell.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Finally,
some people aren’t trying to eat totally organically but are concerned about
antibiotics and hormones in their meat and poultry for example.&nbsp; Understand that to be in the meat/poultry
case there are strict rules regarding antibiotics being present in the
product.&nbsp; Not that no antibiotics were
ever used but the product is antibiotic free.&nbsp;
This is used by several restaurants in advertising and is a tad
misleading.

matter what you choose to eat, we have the safest food system we have ever had.

right or wrong, but what is “organic” in the market place.&nbsp; Keep in mind, that economists basically say
consumers have preferences and want what they want.&nbsp; They won’t purchase what they don’t want, no
matter how good the product might be.&nbsp;
Finally, before starting, the real definition of organic is simply carbon
containing compounds.&nbsp; So basically, all
the food produced is “organic.”&nbsp; Here, we
are dealing with organic food in the marketplace.&nbsp; What is “organic” food?·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; In
agriculture, producing organic products certified organic is fairly
specific.&nbsp; There are standards meet and
maintained as stipulated by the Federal Government.&nbsp; For instance, no GMO crops, types of pest
control and production methods, and so on.&nbsp;
You keep records and are inspected.&nbsp;
You may then market your production as certified organic.&nbsp; This is useful not only within the country,
but in certain export situations.&nbsp; One
example, though not certified organic, is GMO grain.&nbsp; Some countries or groups such as the EU prohibit
the import of certain GMO crops.·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; For
the consumer, organic is a nebulous label for those truly trying to eat
certified organic crops, either at home or in restaurants.&nbsp; Sometimes the label is a bit misleading.&nbsp; A classic example is non-GMO salt.&nbsp; It’s not possible to genetically modify table
salt.&nbsp; If, as a consumer, you are trying
to strictly eat organic products it’s not as easy as reading a label.&nbsp; Without going into all the details, different
products have various wording regarding organic.&nbsp; It may sound odd as you would think something
is certified organic or not, but there are “levels” of organic and you are
supposed to be able to read the label and tell.·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Finally,
some people aren’t trying to eat totally organically but are concerned about
antibiotics and hormones in their meat and poultry for example.&nbsp; Understand that to be in the meat/poultry
case there are strict rules regarding antibiotics being present in the
product.&nbsp; Not that no antibiotics were
ever used but the product is antibiotic free.&nbsp;
This is used by several restaurants in advertising and is a tad
misleading.Please understand that no
matter what you choose to eat, we have the safest food system we have ever had.

In April 2023, the Senate attempted to revive the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) which prohibits discrimination based on sex. Supporters have pushed for more than five decades to amend our Constitution to read ‘Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.’ Sixty votes were needed to move forward with the resolution to remove the 1982 deadline for state ratification. It was not achieved with the 51-47 vote. Both Kansas Senators Jerry Moran and Roger Marshall voted against the amendment. In 2020 and 2021 the House voted to remove the expired deadline to ratify the amendment after Virginia became the 38th state needed for the threshold. However, the Justice Department under former President Donald Trump’s administration claimed it would not be possible because the deadline expired.

This amendment has a long history. The ERA was first drafted in 1923 by suffragist Alice Paul. She believed the ERA to be the next step in guaranteeing equal justice to all citizens and worked for its passage until her death in 1977. The ERA was introduced in both the House and Senate in 1923 by Congressman Daniel R. Anthony (R-KS), nephew to suffragist Susan B. Anthony, and Sen. Charles Curtis (R-KS). From 1923 to 1970, some form of the ERA was introduced in every session of Congress. On March 22, 1972, Congress ratified the ERA. Shortly afterward Kansas ratified the amendment on March 28th under incumbent Governor Robert Docking (D).

Many people have thought that the ERA had already been adopted. Some think that women are already protected from discrimination under the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment, and other laws like the Equal Pay Act (1963), or the Pregnancy Discrimination Act (1978). Still, others like me think that equality for women belongs in the Constitution to prevent rollbacks of women’s rights. That way many of our current legal protections against sex discrimination cannot be removed by the margin of a single vote.

Home Lumber donating 15 AC units to local communities 

Construction is underway on the first portion of the 2nd Street reconstruction project in Hoisington.  Despite the closure, the businesses are still open.  The map below will shows some alternative paths to get to the businesses impacted by the project. 

The City of Hoisington was awarded $568,571 in Cost Share funds from the State of Kansas in June 2021 to resurface a portion of 2nd Street. Two years later, the project is getting underway. Hoisington City Manager Jonathan Mitchell said the improvements will replace the pavement on 2nd Street, one block of west of Main Street and two blocks east of Main. "Stone Sand, Suchy Construction and Sharkey Construction are all going to work together to do this project," said Mitchell." The project will improve 2nd Street by replacing the existing pavement with six inches of concrete over a six-inch aggregate base. Most of the existing curb and gutter will be replaced. Broken sections of the existing sidewalk will be replaced, and ADA ramps will be installed.&nbsp; Hoisington applied for funding for the 2nd Street project four times, and successfully getting the 50/50 matching funds in 2021.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Great Bend will host the lunch stop on the 2023 Hemmings Motor News Great Race presented by Coker Tire on Friday, June 30, 12:30 p.m. at Brit Spaugh Park &amp; Zoo. Each stop is opened to the public and a chance to meet over 125 race teams and see automotive history up close.

The Great Race is a time, speed, endurance rally for 1974 and older collector vehicles. The event has taken place each summer since 1983, and this year’s edition covers new territory from St. Augustine, Florida, starting on Saturday, June 24, and finishing in Colorado Springs, Colorado, on Sunday, July 2.

Teams from Japan, England, Australia, Canada, and every corner of the United States will converge in Florida with vintage automobiles dating back as far as 1916. “There are more than 500 people just in our entourage from all around the world,” Stumb said.

The 2023 winners will receive $50,000 of the $160,000 total purse. A 1916 Hudson Pikes Peak Hillclimber, a 1916 Chevrolet and a 1917 American LaFrance are the oldest cars scheduled to be in the event.

Over the decades, the Great Race has stopped in hundreds of cities big and small, from tiny Austin, Nevada to New York City. “When the Great Race pulls into a city it becomes an instant festival,” Stumb said. “Last year we had several overnight stops with more than 10,000 spectators on our way to having 250,000 people see the Great Race during the event.”

STAFFORD COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 6p.m. Saturday in Stafford County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2002 Yamaha motorcycle driven by Dennis Bradley Barr, 56, Great Bend, was southbound in the 1200 Block of NE 40th Avenue twelve and one half miles north of Hudson.

The passenger identified as Sherri Renee Landes, 53, Hutchinson, suffered an unknown medical condition and fell off the motorcycle.

EMS transported Landes to the hospital in Great Bend. Barr and Landes were wearing eye protection, according to the KHP.

Blooms can develop rapidly; if the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep dogs away. These toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and even skin contact. Symptoms vary depending upon the type of exposure (e.g. direct contact, ingestion, inhalation) but can include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, and headache. Public health advisories for Kansas lakes due to blue-green algae

The City of Great Bend, along with the Great Bend Convention and
Visitors Bureau, hosted three travel writers this past weekend. The writers
explore Great Bend, are shown several highlights and then write blogs about
their experience. 

CVB Director Christina Hayes said this is a good way to spread
the word on what the city has to offer. "If someone searches what fun things are there to do in Great Bend, it comes up in a search engine and it's not produced by us," said Hayes. "It's a CVB goal to make sure we're getting content out there that is not from staff or biased people from here." 
Several travel bloggers have made their way through Great Bend in recent years,
including Roxie Yonkey. Great Bend CVB also attempts to share the city’s
tourist attractions by attending conferences and travel shows each year.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;
