Barton County Sheriff's booking activity (7/27)

Summer vacations are coming to a close with school resuming in less than a month. Six area Youth Crew members put in some final road time for the Community Anti-Drug Coalition of America (CADCA) Youth Conference in Grapevine, Texas earlier this month. Juvenile Services Prevention Advocate Tyler Morton said the convention just outside of Dallas was a big one.

"I think there were 2,400 attendees that went down there this year, and 500 youth this year, so a lot of people," he said. "It's an opportunity for the kids to learn more from other coalitions across the country. We had people that even traveled from around the world as well."

Holly Bowyer with the Center for Counseling in Great Bend also attended the conference. She outlined the work Youth Crew is doing in Great Bend, Ellinwood, and Hoisington, including the recent Kick the Habit kickball tournament, addressing vaping in schools, and promoting positive places for youth in the community. She thought the conference was good for local attendees. 

"Some of our kids are fairly new to this," she said, "but it seems to have given them more self-confidence in doing the work they're doing and realizing it really does make a difference."

Makinzie Beneke, a freshman at Great Bend High School, was one of six Youth Crew attendees to attend the conference. She learned about Youth Crew through the Reality U program, and also learned plenty on the Texas trip.

"The conference taught me multiple things," she said. "I got to learn so much more than what I knew about. I really took away that even though we're all youth, that together we can put our voices together and actually make a change."

Jasmine Figueroa, a junior at GBHS, attended last year's CADCA meeting in Orlando, Fla. As a returner this year at the Gaylord Texan Resort &amp; Convention Center, she attended a different set of meetings alongside Morton that included sessions with lawmakers and groups without youth advisory groups.

"We felt like what they were saying and how she was feeling as a youth herself were not aligning," Morton said. "We actually took some time afterward to meet with them and suggest maybe a youth advisory council for them. Jasmine got some recognition for that, so that was awesome."

Figueroa recalled one session that included experts from the medical and legislative fields in Colorado. The topic was marijuana usage.

"They learned about some new research that correlates marijuana usage and early onset, genetically-predisposed conditions such as dementia, schizophrenia, and heart disease, and how you can have them earlier with marijuana usage. I just fell in love with all that medical information and the prevention work coming together."

Hoisington eighth grader MaKiah Webber and Great Bend eighth grader Grace Vandine also made the trip. Webber started with Youth Crew as a sixth grader and is pleased to see the program growing in Hoisington.

"We actually have some fifth graders last year that joined," she said. "Even though they can't be a part of Youth Crew yet, they still attended meetings even though they can't join events. It's nice to know our community is spreading."

Youth Crew members had to submit an application before attending the trip. Attendees were selected on their participation in the program, attendance at meetings, and what they bring to the group. Recent GBHS graduate Aaron Deason and Ellinwood sophomore Alvin Bowyer were also selected. The Barton County crew was selected to give a presentation in front of the other 500 attendees.

Bike Brew Q will host its annual charity event Saturday, July 29 at the Expo II building at the Barton County Fair Grounds, 455 West Barton County Road in Great Bend and all proceeds will go to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.&nbsp; 

The event features cycling rides and a mountain bike race in the morning, food trucks that start serving food at 11 a.m., and a Craft Brew Expo featuring 20 breweries from around the region from 1 to 4 p.m. with the VIP portion starting at 12:30 p.m. All events are independent of each other. Designated drivers get into the Craft Brew Expo at no charge. General admission tickets can be purchased at&nbsp;<a href="http://bikebrewq.com/" target="_blank">bikebrewq.com</a>&nbsp;or at the door on the day of the event for $35 and include unlimited beer samples and a Bike Brew Q pint glass. Limited VIP tickets are still available for $50 and get attendees early access to special VIP beers and the first opportunity to collect brewery freebie items as well as a gold-rimmed taster glass.

Bike Brew Q Event Chair Ryan Fairchild said it's always a great day and it's for a great cause.&nbsp;

"My wife has cystic fibrosis as well as other members of my family so this event means a lot to me," he said. "We appreciate every single one of you that comes to this event. We are approaching $100,000 raised over the last eight years and we hope to hit that landmark by year 10. We hope to see everybody on Saturday to make some memories with us."&nbsp; The expo features live music and over 50 unique beers with breweries coming from as far as Kansas City to be a part of the festivities. There is a pretzel necklace contest as well and the winner receives two tickets to next year's Craft Brew Expo.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Pilots worldwide attend a convention each year and make new Pilot friends, renew old friendships, as well as celebrate outstanding achievements by member clubs.

Dan Watson was the delegate for Pilot Club of Great Bend at the 101st Pilot International Convention and Leadership Conference held in Bellevue, Washington, joining Dan at the convention was Rhonda Knudson, and Barbara Watson the club past President.&nbsp; The club for the second year won international awards at the Gold Level; First Place – Outstanding Volunteer Hours, First Place - Outstanding Pilot Club Visibility, Second Place – Pick Me up Project, and First Place – Outstanding Pilot Club Overall.&nbsp; 

Dan commented, “These awards are appreciated beyond measure, and well deserved by our caring and dedicated members whose mission is to make Great Bend and Barton County better communities.”

Pilot’s mission is to influence positive change around the world. Brain related projects are an important focus.&nbsp; With that in mind the service project at the convention this year was for Bellevue Life Spring where Pilot members filled more than 2,000 bags of hygiene kits to be distributed to 27 schools for students and families in need in the Bellevue area.

Pilot Club of Great Bend International award winner

The stars nearly aligned but the 11th annual Party in the Park falls on Saturday, Aug. 12 this year in Great Bend. The day-long event will feature many of the same activities as previous parties, but Community Coordinator Christina Hayes said a new variation of an old event begins at 9:30 a.m. that morning at Veterans Memorial Park.

"We always do some sort of paint in the park, whether it be little projects people can take home or we've done the Great Bend Rocks before," she said. "This was kind of a fun idea we found online that a community had done, and we thought, let's just try it."

The Explore Great Bend Facebook page posted a photo of a rock snake on June 12. That post elicited more than 450 likes and 119 shares. Great Bend will call its snake Piper the Party in the Park Python

"We've not determined if the home will be Vets Park, but we will make it where it's on display," Hayes said. "It's kind of a fun, little different thing to do for free for kids and people of all ages. It's just a new fun addition and it will be on the south side over by the playground in the morning of Party in the Park."

This year's Party in the Park begins at 9 a.m. with the Oozefest Mud Volleyball Tournament at Vets Park. Live music begins at 6:15 p.m. that evening, capped with fireworks at 10 p.m. and more music from Homebrew after that.

GTR Limousine &amp; Party Services LLC is ready to provide the wheels. Area athletes can provide the entertainment. With the high school fall sports season ramping up, GTR is ready to enhance the experience with its Great Bend High School Football Friday Nights Tailgate Party Package. 

"It's a package where somebody can purchase a bus for the evening, get all their friends together, then travel to the out-of-town sporting events we're having," said GTR's Jennifer Turner. "We're going to try it with football first and see how that goes over."

At this time, GTR will rent a bus to a group for the purpose of traveling to games, though individual ticket sales may be an option in the future. Seating will be limited to approximately 25 fans to allow space for packing food, drinks, stadium chairs, or anything else needed to enjoy Friday Night Lights. Fees are based on travel time only with the usual waiting fees waived. Turner said it's a way to bring the community together with the added bonus of supporting local athletes on the road.

"Our goal really is to offer more alternatives to people in the community," she said. "There are so many different ways we can use the buses, and we want to find different and unique ways to use the buses. Being in a bus isn't always about drinking and partying, it's about being together with people."

The Panther football team has four road games scheduled for the regular season. The bus will depart and return to the parking lot at Great Bend High School. With a game at rival Hays on Sept. 8, GTR would like to plan additional buses for student travel.

"It's making it fun and something different," Turner said. "It's a short distance there and a short distance back. It's all about getting the kids pumped up about the game and getting them there so there's a big fan base at the game."

GTR planning tailgate package for upcoming GBHS football games

With construction beginning this past February, progress is right on
schedule for the new Ellinwood Hospital &amp; Clinic. The $32 million hospital
project, west of Ellinwood on U.S. 56 Highway, could take up to two years to
complete. 

Ellinwood Hospital CEO Kile Magner said McCownGordon Construction is
slightly ahead of schedule, but there is still a lot that can happen between
now and when the project is finished. "The roof is supposed to be on by the end of this month," said Magner. "Internally, about half of the framework for walls is up. They're getting ready to do dirt work for the parking lot. They're trying to get the roof and exterior walls done so they can work through the winter." 
Ellinwood Hospital was approved for a $25 million loan from the United States
Department of Agriculture to help construct the new hospital that will be part
of the 15 acres along the highway. "The more that goes up, the more the community gets excited," said Magner. "You can now physically see it, and it's not just a dream. It's a reality that gets a little more true every day." 
The current hospital and clinic, on Main Street, are nearly 80 years old.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Construction on schedule for new Ellinwood hospital

At the July 11 Barton Community College Board of Trustees
study session, there was a mention that summer enrollment numbers increased
significantly compared to last year’s figures. Todd Mobray, Barton’s Director
of Institutional Effectiveness, went to work over the next two weeks to present
the trustees data highlighting the enrollment increase. 

At Tuesday’s board
meeting, trustees were informed that summer 2023 credits increased
approximately 2,500 credits, or nearly 15%, compared to 2022. Barton’s Vice
President of Instruction Elaine Simmons said the data can have a big impact on
how the college moves forward. "When you look at the bare minimum of information, there's opportunities for discussion on how we schedule our classes and what classes we schedule," said Simmons. "We can also work with Maggie (Maggie Harris, Chief Communications Officer) where we're going to target promotion in certain states and certain age groups."

Barton Online credits saw the largest increase, jumping 2,628 credits. The
Barton campus in Great Bend went from 688 summer credits in 2022 to 733 in
2023. This summer saw an 18% increase in females taking credit hours and an 11%
increase from males. "Data is beautiful but it requires work," said Simmons. "The challenge comes from making and taking the time to act on what the information is trying to tell you. We're still learning how to do that, but it's something we need to get better at and we only do that through practicing and working on it." 
Barton saw 442 more credits from students in Oklahoma this summer, 318 more in
Texas and 214 additional credits in Missouri.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Barton County Sheriff's booking activity (7/26)

A set of Barton County parents received the news no parent wants to hear this weekend. Trey Cullens-Zeiters, age three, was found unresponsive at his mother's home in Ellinwood. The good news is Trey is now off a ventilator at Kansas City's Children's Mercy Hospital. The bad news is the battle is far from over. Trey's stepmother, Christina Cullens-Zeiters, said Trey was diagnosed with arteriovenous malformations (AVM).

"His veins, in development, they got tangled into a knot so it restricts blood flow," she said. "It's considered a stroke, but because he's under three, he had an aneurysm."

Trey, who will turn four on Christmas Eve, was at his mother's house on Sunday, July 23, when he was found unresponsive just before 11 a.m. His father, Cheyenne Cullens-Zeiters, rushed to pick him up and get him to the University of Kansas Health System - Great Bend Campus. He was intercepted by law enforcement and EMS near Doonan's. 

Trey was rushed by ambulance to the hospital in Great Bend where he remained unresponsive and was placed on a ventilator. Staff attempted to insert an IV into the toddler but his veins had collapsed. He was flown to Kansas City around 5 p.m.

"He was under pressure on his brain for a minimum of eight hours before he got a drain tube here in Kansas City," Cheyenne said.

Doctors in Kansas City were able to relieve Trey's immediate medical concerns and, as of Wednesday morning, he was doing well. He is currently undergoing physical therapy but is still experiencing weakness on his right side. There is the chance Trey will experience another aneurysm in the near or distant future. 

The family is insured but costs are already beginning to mount. The hospital provides a free stay at a nearby Ronald McDonald house but only for one family. Cheyenne and Christina gave that room to Trey's mother while they are spending $1,000 a week for a hotel room. Both will be unable to work until Trey returns home.
