According to the Kansas Breastfeeding Coalition, nearly 90 percent of new mothers in Kansas begin breastfeeding after giving birth, but only half of those parents are still breastfeeding six months later. The Coalition designated the Barton County Health Department as a "Breastfeeding Friendly Local Health Department" for its work in supporting breastfeeding families. WIC and Breastfeeding Coordinator Bev Frizell explained the award.

"We are doing seven steps to help promote breastfeeding and to be a breastfeeding-friendly facility," she said, "so when our clients come in, they know they don't have to worry about breastfeeding here. They can breastfeed without any peer pressure to not."

The health department has met the seven criteria required for the designation, including community engagement, staff education, and client education and support. Staff has a referral system with local hospitals so they can contact new mothers within days of giving birth to answer any questions or concerns about breastfeeding.

"We also provide prenatal breastfeeding education," Frizell said. "We have breastfeeding classes for pregnant moms who would like to learn about breastfeeding before their babies are born, what to expect during their breastfeeding journey."

The Kansas Breastfeeding Coalition has also recognized the health department and Barton County Courthouse for its support of employees who wish to breastfeed.

Anyone in the community is welcome to attend the health department's Breastfeeding Support Group on the second and third Wednesday each month.

"Alright ramblers, let's get ramblin'" is a line from the 1992 movie "Reservoir Dogs." Alright gamblers, let's get gamblin' may be a more appropriate quote for nearly 70 drivers heading through Barton County this weekend as part of the Kansas Outkast Gambler 500. Organizer Oree Klein, from Canton, said it's a fun weekend with a good cause.

"These events are all over the United States now," he said. "Almost every state has a Gambler 500 if not two or three events. Some of them have some different rules. In Kansas, we've adapted to let everybody come have fun."

Central Kansas Off Road Association (CKORA) is welcoming the event that runs from Friday, Sept. 22 through Sunday, Sept. 24. The rules are simple: bring a cheap or wild vehicle, be self-reliant, and pick up some trash along the way to several waypoints along a 500-mile stretch of mostly back roads. Base camp will be the CKORA riding area south of the Radium bridge.

"The gamble part is seeing if you're going to make it the 500 miles in your cheap vehicle," Klein said.

Sometimes the cleanup is substantial. The group met near Herington Lake and Reservoir for an event in April. More than 170 tires were picked up from the sides of roads, and the group filled a 30-yard dumpster with 2,100 pounds of garbage they collected.&nbsp;

No points are handed out, but the Outkast 500 will have some custom trophies created by a gambler who is driving in from WyoTech to participate.

"The trophies we give out are usually for who picked up the most trash, who lived the gambler style for the weekend, so giving back by picking up the land and helping others," said Klein.

Klein encourages participants to shop locally once they arrive at a location, and he plans to meet with the CKORA board to determine which local organizations might benefit from a small donation.

Drivers will arrive and register Friday around noon. A driver's meeting will be held Saturday morning, and a parade of vehicles typically follows.

Our political leaders are old, and many are&nbsp;<a href="https://devotedguardians.com/at-what-point-is-someone-considered-elderly/" target="_blank">elderly</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Dianne Feinstein is currently the oldest sitting Senator at age 90.&nbsp;&nbsp;She has experienced a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnn.com/2023/08/09/politics/dianne-feinstein-hospitalized-after-fall/index.html" target="_blank">string of serious health issues</a>, but remains committed to serving out her term.&nbsp;&nbsp;At age 88, Senator Chuck Grassley recently&nbsp;<a href="https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/news/politics/elections/2022/11/09/republican-chuck-grassley-wins-iowa-us-senate-race-beats-mike-franken/69611362007/" target="_blank">won</a>&nbsp;an eighth term that will end when he reaches his mid-90s.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Congress is&nbsp;<a href="https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/aging-congress-boomers/" target="_blank">older</a>&nbsp;than it’s ever been.&nbsp;&nbsp;The median Senator is 65, and the median House member is 58.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kansas Senators Marshall and Moran are ages 64 and 69 respectively.&nbsp;&nbsp;Three Kansas House members are notably younger.&nbsp;&nbsp;Representatives Mann and Davis are in their 40s and Jake LaTurner a mere 35.&nbsp;

State politicians are aging too.&nbsp;&nbsp;The average age of&nbsp;<a href="https://stateline.org/2015/12/23/in-state-legislatures-millennials-are-often-left-out/" target="_blank">statehouse</a>&nbsp;members is 56.&nbsp;&nbsp;Some states, like New Hampshire, the average age is much higher at 66.&nbsp;&nbsp;In Kansas it’s 58.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

For sitting governors, the average age is 58.&nbsp;&nbsp;Eleven governors, including Kansas Governor Laura Kelly, are at least 70.&nbsp;&nbsp;Alabama’s Governor&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kay_Ivey" target="_blank">Kay Ivey</a>&nbsp;is the oldest at 77.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

No other&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bls.gov/cps/cpsaat11b.htm" target="_blank">occupation</a>&nbsp;skews this old nor produces so many senior leaders.&nbsp;&nbsp;We seem to have a&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerontocracy" target="_blank">gerontocracy</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Millennials are the largest generation by population but one of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnn.com/2023/05/19/politics/millennials-genxers-baby-boomers-congress-representation-dg/index.html" target="_blank">smallest groups in Congress</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

None of this may bother you.&nbsp;&nbsp;People are living and working longer; they are more active and healthier than past generations.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Yet age impacts representation.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Aging politicians are more&nbsp;<a href="https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/1532673X18754557?journalCode=aprb" target="_blank">focused</a>&nbsp;on issues important to older Americans such as social security and Medicare. A recent&nbsp;<a href="https://today.yougov.com/topics/politics/articles-reports/2022/01/19/elected-officials-maximum-age-limit-poll" target="_blank">CBS News/YouGov poll</a>&nbsp;showed 73 percent of Americans support maximum age limits for elected offices.&nbsp;&nbsp;A quarter said 60 years old should be the maximum, nearly 40% said 70, and 23% preferred 80.&nbsp;&nbsp;Most Democrats and Republicans supported limits as did the youngest and oldest cohorts.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Americans do appreciate older, seasoned lawmakers. And they know age is an imperfect proxy for health and ability.&nbsp;&nbsp;But they also know older politicians stay too long sacrificing younger generations that bring fresh ideas and energy.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Senator Mitt Romney’s recent&nbsp;<a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/4202490-mitt-romney-to-retire-from-senate/" target="_blank">retirement</a>&nbsp;shows aging&nbsp;politicians will pass the torch.&nbsp;&nbsp;Senior senators Cardin, Carper, and Stabenow decided to retire as well.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 </figure>Our political leaders are old, and many are&nbsp;<a href="https://devotedguardians.com/at-what-point-is-someone-considered-elderly/" target="_blank">elderly</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Dianne Feinstein is currently the oldest sitting Senator at age 90.&nbsp;&nbsp;She has experienced a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnn.com/2023/08/09/politics/dianne-feinstein-hospitalized-after-fall/index.html" target="_blank">string of serious health issues</a>, but remains committed to serving out her term.&nbsp;&nbsp;At age 88, Senator Chuck Grassley recently&nbsp;<a href="https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/news/politics/elections/2022/11/09/republican-chuck-grassley-wins-iowa-us-senate-race-beats-mike-franken/69611362007/" target="_blank">won</a>&nbsp;an eighth term that will end when he reaches his mid-90s.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Senate Majority Leader Schumer is 72, and Mitch McConnell, the Minority Leader, is 81.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;McConnell recently&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/sen-mitch-mcconnell-appears-freeze-kentucky-event-rcna102583" target="_blank">froze</a>&nbsp;involuntarily at two public events prompting questions about his fitness for office.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;At 80, Nancy Pelosi became the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.vox.com/2021/1/3/22211713/nancy-pelosi-elected-fourth-term-speaker-house" target="_blank">oldest</a>&nbsp;representative elected as House Speaker.&nbsp;&nbsp;Her House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer was 83 and the Majority Whip Jim Clyburn 82.&nbsp;&nbsp;Now at 83, Pelosi&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/pelosi-house-speaker-democrat-congress-san-francisco-a251e03986a589d5c0bd7f1122f291e4" target="_blank">declared</a>&nbsp;she will again seek reelection.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Joe Biden became the oldest president, at age 77.&nbsp;&nbsp;At 80, Biden became the oldest president to announce a reelection campaign.&nbsp;&nbsp;His chief Republican rival, Donald Trump, is 77 years old.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Congress is&nbsp;<a href="https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/aging-congress-boomers/" target="_blank">older</a>&nbsp;than it’s ever been.&nbsp;&nbsp;The median Senator is 65, and the median House member is 58.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Kansas Senators Marshall and Moran are ages 64 and 69 respectively.&nbsp;&nbsp;Three Kansas House members are notably younger.&nbsp;&nbsp;Representatives Mann and Davis are in their 40s and Jake LaTurner a mere 35.&nbsp;State politicians are aging too.&nbsp;&nbsp;The average age of&nbsp;<a href="https://stateline.org/2015/12/23/in-state-legislatures-millennials-are-often-left-out/" target="_blank">statehouse</a>&nbsp;members is 56.&nbsp;&nbsp;Some states, like New Hampshire, the average age is much higher at 66.&nbsp;&nbsp;In Kansas it’s 58.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;For sitting governors, the average age is 58.&nbsp;&nbsp;Eleven governors, including Kansas Governor Laura Kelly, are at least 70.&nbsp;&nbsp;Alabama’s Governor&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kay_Ivey" target="_blank">Kay Ivey</a>&nbsp;is the oldest at 77.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;No other&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bls.gov/cps/cpsaat11b.htm" target="_blank">occupation</a>&nbsp;skews this old nor produces so many senior leaders.&nbsp;&nbsp;We seem to have a&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerontocracy" target="_blank">gerontocracy</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Millennials are the largest generation by population but one of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnn.com/2023/05/19/politics/millennials-genxers-baby-boomers-congress-representation-dg/index.html" target="_blank">smallest groups in Congress</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;None of this may bother you.&nbsp;&nbsp;People are living and working longer; they are more active and healthier than past generations.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Yet age impacts representation.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Aging politicians are more&nbsp;<a href="https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/1532673X18754557?journalCode=aprb" target="_blank">focused</a>&nbsp;on issues important to older Americans such as social security and Medicare. INSIGHT KANSAS: Politics is for old people

People like wine. People like animals. Combining wine with wild animals
has not been as likeable. That’s what the City of Great Bend and the Brit
Spaugh Zoo are finding out. 

The Wine in the Wild fundraiser was held last
Friday night at the zoo for an evening with live music, food, wine and access
to animal encounters and exhibits. Great Bend Community Coordinator Christina
Hayes said selling tickets at $40 each did not see successful numbers.


"Even though this expensive event was kind of a flop, we won't do it next year, we still made three times the amount of money that the Zoological Society made at their last fundraiser," said Hayes. "We still made a good amount of money in small thousands, not multiple thousands which we were hoping to do."

Friday’s event was the first fundraiser for the zoo organized by the city.
Hayes said Wine in the Wild will not return next year, but staff is working on
finding a new event to raise funds for the free zoo.


All the proceeds from the fundraiser went directly to supporting the zoo.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

WINKEL: Cottonwood Extension available for Medicare open enrollment counseling

As Rosewood Services is celebrating its silver anniversary, the agency is also proudly hosting its 19th Annual Rosewood Rodeo. The annual equine-therapy rodeo will take place Saturday, Oct. 7 from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Great Bend Expo III Arena, located at Barton County Fairground, two miles west on 10th and Patton Road.

Throughout the Rosewood Rodeo, the public is invited to come out and experience family-friendly fall fun. There is no admission charge.

The annual rodeo is one of the most important days of the year for equine-therapy riders from Rosewood Services, who practice their riding skills at Rosewood Ranch on a weekly basis throughout the year. Rosewood Ranch is a full-working horse ranch near Pawnee Rock, where people with developmental disabilities learn to ride and care for approximately 75 horses.

“We started our Rosewood Equine Therapy Program only a few years after we opened our agency, because we recognized the vital role it could play in the development of dozens of our clients,” said Tammy Hammond, Executive Director of Rosewood Services. “Our annual rodeo soon followed and it’s become a date that many of us circle on our calendars every year; we won’t ever miss this special day. We invite everyone to come out and experience the fun, and see why this event is so special for so many connected with the program.”

Rodeo-day fun includes children’s activities and games, and face painting. If weather permits, horse-drawn wagon rides around the fairground will also be available. It’s a come-and-go event for spectators, so people can choose the times they wish to attend. Reasonably priced Chuck Wagon Concessions are also available, which includes a pulled pork lunch.

In between the day’s rodeo events are two performances by the all-female “The American Dream” horse riding drill team. “The American Dream” will perform at 10:30 a.m. and again at 2 p.m., featuring two different programs during each performance&nbsp;(All performance times are approximate.)

The 19th Annual Rosewood Rodeo’s grand entry and flag ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. Then, throughout the day, therapeutic rodeo events will be held for Rosewood Services riders, including an event for children riders, followed by the award ceremony at approximately 3:30 p.m.

During the rodeo, the public can participate in a&nbsp;silent auction, where they&nbsp; can expect to find excellent deals on merchandise, with all bids closing at 3 p.m.&nbsp; Proceeds from the auction go to Rosewood’s non-profit Roots &amp; Wings Foundation. The foundation provides therapeutic, medical, educational and recreational opportunities to people in need, who have developmental disabilities.

Plan to attend any or all of the day’s events while browsing tack-shop merchandise, which will be available throughout the day.

The 2nd annual city-wide cleanup in Great Bend wrapped up
this past Sunday and final numbers of collection are being added up, according
to Public Works Director Jason Cauley. Citizens were allowed to dump refuse,
tires, metal, mattresses, appliances and almost anything they were looking to
get rid of during the 10-day cleanup at the Sunflower Diversified Services
Recycling Center. 

Armed with several 30-yard and 40-yard dumpster containers,
Cauley said 36 of the 76 dumpster loads this year consisted of tires.


"I don't know what the total cost of disposing of the tires is quite yet because they're still tallying that up," said Cauley. "I do know that the price went up from $150 last year to $248 a ton this year. It will be significantly larger cost this year. We're waiting for all the finalizations. We've only had a handful of invoices come in so far."

Cauley said a check will be coming soon from ACME Scrap with the city disposing
of eight tons of scrap metal.


Last year, Great Bend residents filled 51 of the commercial-sized dumpsters.
That number was up to 76 this year. Excluding labor from city staff that
assisted residents with unloading, the city’s expense was just under $20,000

A tentative November start date has been set for the installation of a
new splash pad at Veterans Memorial Park in Great Bend. Once started, the
$680,000 splash pad should be finished in three to four months. 

Assistant City
Administrator Logan Burns updated the Great Bend City Council Monday on the project
that will add the 50' x 70' splash pad on the north side of the park.


"We are planning on doing a pre-construction meeting and a site visit within the next two weeks," said Burns. "Construction documents have been completed on that, and that will start the fabrication process."

The council approved the splash pad purchase this past June from Athco LLC. The
feature will come with a 3,000-gallon storage tank to recycle the water.


Funded through the .15% quality of life sales tax, the city will consider
additional features surrounding the splash pad in the future, such a shelter to
be rented out for parties.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;
