Barton Theatre to present 'A Christmas Story' with free admission

The drought monitor report as of 8
a.m. Tuesday, November 14, shows no real significant change again for our area
this week.&nbsp; We are still in severe
drought.&nbsp; Overall, across the state
conditions are slowly deteriorating with the lack of moisture in most areas and
warm temperatures.&nbsp; The six to ten-day
outlook (November 21 to 25) indicates a 40 to 50% chance of leaning below normal
for temperatures and a 33 to 40% chance of leaning below normal precipitation.&nbsp; The eight to fourteen-day outlook (November 23
to 29) indicates a 33 to 40% chance of leaning to below normal temperatures and
near normal for precipitation.&nbsp; Not the
precipitation forecast we need.&nbsp;
Hopefully, the predicted rainfall Saturday and Sunday happens.

Harvesting is winding down for most
and wheat planting pretty well wrapped up.&nbsp;
Many non-ag types think that now producers can take a break.&nbsp; Kick back and relax.&nbsp; A bit?&nbsp;
Maybe.&nbsp; But the reality for most
is much different.&nbsp; So, what are/should
producers be up to now in no particular order?

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Evaluate
the past growing season field by field.&nbsp;
While taking weather and other factors into account, see what worked and
what didn’t.&nbsp; Problem weed areas are
identified.&nbsp; Which hybrids and varieties
are worth keeping and which should probably go.&nbsp;
And of course, total input costs with an eye towards profitability.&nbsp; After that go to the next bullet point.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Examining
everything from weather projections and markets to input costs, rough out the
crops for next year and the acreage devoted to each.&nbsp; After doing that, visit with seed dealers to
order seed for next spring as there is usually a good discount for ordering
now.&nbsp; 

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Soil
test or at least have a good idea of what quantity of nutrients you
removed.&nbsp; For nitrogen and sulfur that
will wait till next spring much closer to planting.&nbsp; Once you determine your acreage of each crop
and a realistic yield goal, you will have an idea of how much total fertilizer
you need.&nbsp; Knowing how much is in the
ground now, your percent organic matter, and pH allows a producer to order
projected fertilizer needs now and again save some money.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Many
producers will have cattle on wheat or other pasture over the winter and
several hours at a minimum are devoted each day to their care.&nbsp; Some fall calve and are dealing with that
project while others spring calve and are checking progress and health.&nbsp; Normally, some “doctoring” needs done.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; If
they strip till, late fall/early winter is a good time to strip till and even
lay down so fertilizer as you do it.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Maintenance
and repair of equipment and cleaning up some to be put to bed until next

Wildly popular with consumers, recycling in the USA is in crisis right now, particularly for plastics.&nbsp; Many of the items we try to recycle end up in landfills.

A&nbsp;recent KAKE news project&nbsp;tracked the recycling crisis… literally.&nbsp; KAKE staff attached GPS trackers to four different plastic bags, then recycled those bags at four different Wichita retail stores.&nbsp; One bag went on a long journey to Malaysia.&nbsp; One was being held at a local recycling center.&nbsp; The last two went to the landfill.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Plastic bags must be recycled separately: just one of many problems.&nbsp; Plastics do not mix well, so they should be sorted according to the number inside the triangle of arrows embossed on the item.&nbsp; Recycling plastic changes its properties, making it more dense and less flexible.&nbsp; This type of plastic definitely has its uses– one inventor in Ghana is turning&nbsp;<a href="https://face2faceafrica.com/article/nelson-boateng-the-entrepreneur-behind-ghanas-first-house-made-from-plastic-waste" target="_blank">recycled plastics into bricks</a>&nbsp;that can be assembled into houses.&nbsp; Recycled plastic’s tough, heavy, rugged qualities also make good toys.&nbsp; Unfortunately, much of the demand for plastic is because it is lightweight and flexible. Recycled plastic lacks these qualities, and plastic gets harder and harder to recycle each time it is processed.&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href="https://www.npr.org/2022/10/24/1131131088/recycling-plastic-is-practically-impossible-and-the-problem-is-getting-worse" target="_blank">Recent studies</a>&nbsp;found that fewer than 5% of cups and containers and only 21% of plastic bottles are actually recycled.&nbsp; There are many&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansascity.com/news/local/article273912825.html" target="_blank">reports&nbsp;</a>of plastics being sent from recycling centers to landfills.&nbsp;&nbsp;

For years, U.S. recycling was sent to China for processing, filling shipping containers for their return trip.&nbsp; However, China&nbsp;<a href="https://www.waste360.com/recycling/chinese-banned-our-recyclables-what-happened-next" target="_blank">imposed a ban&nbsp;</a>on many imported recyclables starting in 2018, including paper and plastic.&nbsp; One reason cited was that the recyclables being sent there were not clean– recyclable and non-recyclable items were mixed together, and many were contaminated, particularly with food waste.&nbsp; This last is also the reason why the University of Kansas recently&nbsp;curtailed some recycling programs.&nbsp; In addition, the price for recyclable materials has plummeted. The California Attorney General is&nbsp;<a href="https://oag.ca.gov/news/press-releases/attorney-general-bonta-demands-manufacturers-plastic-bags-substantiate" target="_blank">investigating</a>&nbsp;the plastics industry for misleading consumers about the recyclability of plastic over decades, a deception known as “greenwashing.”

Consumers need to clean our recyclables.&nbsp; Fast food containers and other items contaminated with food waste are not recyclable.&nbsp; This&nbsp;<a href="https://www.jocogov.org/department/environment/recycling/recycling-101" target="_blank">handy guide&nbsp;</a>called “Recycling 101” from Johnson County lists recycling dos and don’ts.&nbsp;

If you drop your recyclables off at a recycling center, clean and sort them first.&nbsp; If you place a bin outside for curbside collection, follow the instructions provided.&nbsp; Consumers should avoid “aspirational recycling,” or throwing items in recycling containers hoping for the best.&nbsp; These items must be removed, deposited into the trash and hauled to the landfill, raising costs.&nbsp; Better to throw them away at home.

It is also time to reduce uses of these items in the first place. For example, Lawrence and Wichita were both considering bans on single-use plastic bags before they were preempted by the Kansas Legislature.&nbsp; Plastic production has grown from 1.5 million tons annually in the 1950s to 300 million tons today.&nbsp; Substitute reusable materials when possible.&nbsp; When it is not, placing non-recyclable materials in the trash to be deposited in a proper landfill is still a good alternative to littering, illegal dumping, and illegal burning.&nbsp;&nbsp;

While recycling items like aluminum and precious metals is highly valuable,&nbsp; other materials have little value as scrap.&nbsp; Many end up in the landfill despite our good intentions.&nbsp; Just throwing everything in the recycling bin is not working.&nbsp; We need to re-think our interconnected systems of packaging, production, and waste from top to bottom.

The California Attorney General is&nbsp;<a href="https://oag.ca.gov/news/press-releases/attorney-general-bonta-demands-manufacturers-plastic-bags-substantiate" target="_blank">investigating</a>&nbsp;the plastics industry for misleading consumers about the recyclability of plastic over decades, a deception known as “greenwashing.”Consumers need to clean our recyclables.&nbsp; Fast food containers and other items contaminated with food waste are not recyclable.&nbsp; This&nbsp;<a href="https://www.jocogov.org/department/environment/recycling/recycling-101" target="_blank">handy guide&nbsp;</a>called “Recycling 101” from Johnson County lists recycling dos and don’ts.&nbsp;If you drop your recyclables off at a recycling center, clean and sort them first.&nbsp; If you place a bin outside for curbside collection, follow the instructions provided.&nbsp; Consumers should avoid “aspirational recycling,” or throwing items in recycling containers hoping for the best.&nbsp; These items must be removed, deposited into the trash and hauled to the landfill, raising costs.&nbsp; Better to throw them away at home.It is also time to reduce uses of these items in the first place. For example, Lawrence and Wichita were both considering bans on single-use plastic bags before they were preempted by the Kansas Legislature.&nbsp; Plastic production has grown from 1.5 million tons annually in the 1950s to 300 million tons today.&nbsp; Substitute reusable materials when possible.&nbsp; When it is not, placing non-recyclable materials in the trash to be deposited in a proper landfill is still a good alternative to littering, illegal dumping, and illegal burning.&nbsp;&nbsp;While recycling items like aluminum and precious metals is highly valuable,&nbsp; other materials have little value as scrap.&nbsp; Many end up in the landfill despite our good intentions.&nbsp; Just throwing everything in the recycling bin is not working.&nbsp; We need to re-think our interconnected systems of packaging, production, and waste from top to bottom.

A good Thanksgiving meal likely revolves around the quality of the bird on the table. Unfortunately, cooking the perfect turkey is not as simple as throwing it in the oven on Thanksgiving morning. Fortunately, the craft of cooking a perfect bird has been fine-tuned over the years. Karissa Winkel, family and community wellness agent with K-State Research and Extension - Cottonwood District, said the process begins days in advance with the thaw.

"The best way is to thaw it in the fridge but that can take some time so you want to plan a little bit depending on how big your turkey is," she said. "For a 16-20 pound turkey to thaw, it takes four to five days."

The general rule of thumb is to allow 24 hours of thawing in the refrigerator for every four or five pounds of turkey. The bird may also be placed in a leakproof plastic bag and placed in cold water. Experts say the turkey should be completely covered with water, and the water should be changed every 30 minutes. Allow 30 minutes of thawing for each pound of turkey, and turkeys thawed this way must be cooked immediately after thawing.

Turkeys should be cooked to an internal temperature of 165°F, but the danger does not end there. Food left out for too long after the big meal also poses a threat.

"You don't want to leave any food out longer than two hours," Winkel said. "That's the 2-hour rule. If you have food out, go ahead and enjoy it, but go ahead and put it back in the fridge and let it cool."

Larger pieces of turkey should be cut into smaller sizes so it cools faster. Leftover turkey should be consumed within three to four days or placed in the freezer for longer storage.

Sheryl Neeland made a career of helping students and families in the Great Bend school district. Prior to her death on Sept. 29, Neeland spent a total of 38 years in the district as a kindergarten teacher and school nurse at Riley Elementary, and as a guidance counselor at Jefferson and Park Elementaries, then finally at Great Bend Middle School where she retired.

Like many locations in the eastern half of Great Bend, the middle school lost trees during the July 16 storm. To honor Sheryl's memory, her family reached out to Jeremy Elliott at MyLawn Turf &amp; Tree. They selected a sugar maple to be planted in honor of Sheryl near the middle school entrance. GBMS Principal Myron Ellegood said Neeland will be remembered for a long time for her service to so many kids and families.

"We're grateful to her family for the tree they've donated in her honor," he said. "It's a nice gesture, and even nicer now that we had that big storm come through and we lost so many trees. This will be nice to replace that. We're thankful for them and we're thankful for the work Sheryl did here at Great Bend Middle School."

The sugar maple was selected, in part, because of its hardy nature and colorful leaves. The trees can grow as tall as 130 feet.

Maple tree planted in honor of late Great Bend MS counselor

The Hoisington Chamber of Commerce is reimaging their Chamber coffees for 2024 and have begun the process in 2023. 

In 2024, Chamber coffees will only take place on the first and third Thursday of the month. The Chamber encourages businesses to host a coffee on their own or with another business. For the remaining of 2023, the Chamber has coffee hours that were already pre-booked and those will continue to happen but the Chamber will not take on any more than what has already been scheduled.

K-State Research and Extension, NW Region Extension Counties/Districts are hosting two Crop Pest Management Schools, December 5, in Colby at the City Limits Convention Center and December 6, in Russell at the Elks Lodge starting at 7:45 a.m. with registration and concluding at 5:00 PM.

Join us in-person to learn about how to control the latest pests – weeds, insects, and diseases – effecting all crops in central and western Kansas!

Commercial Applicators will earn 1 Core Hour &amp; 7 Hours for 1A, certified by Kansas Department of AG. Certified Crop Advisors (CCA) will also earn 8 Pest Management Credits. These schools would also be an excellent educational opportunity for producers!

CAMPBELL: Crop pest management schools

Brandi Gruber and other ElderCare staff members have found themselves in an unusual situation.

Of the 80 gift tags displayed on the ElderCare Giving Tree, 15 of them indicate a need for a vacuum cleaner.

“We haven’t seen anything like this before,” said Gruber, ElderCare executive director. “However, we completely understand the need.

“Many of our clients have used heavy-duty vacuums for decades. Now, these vacuums have either gone kaput or they are too heavy for elders to use.”

Gruber emphasized that those who choose one of these 15 gift tags from the tree are under no obligation to buy a vacuum cleaner.

“But if several friends pool their resources, maybe a vacuum is possible,” she noted. “Or, they can donate something else that is mentioned on the gift tag.

“We certainly don’t expect anyone to make a larger-than-normal donation. But we felt like we should at least pass this information along.”

The Giving Tree is located at the ElderCare office, 1121 Washington, Great Bend. The office is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays.

“We accommodate anyone who wants to share the Christmas spirit with the people ElderCare serves,” Gruber commented. “I assure you they appreciate the support the community has shown for this project the past six years.”

The tree is trimmed with decorative tags that represent ElderCare clients and their particular needs. Actual names are not used because of privacy concerns.

Gifts should be returned to the ElderCare office by Dec. 15.

“I can’t tell you how much our clients appreciate their neighbors who think about them during the Christmas season.”

Gifts could include blankets, warm clothing, toiletry items, a favorite candy or food item, and crossword-puzzle and word-search books. Gift cards for a few staples at the grocery store also come in handy.

Counties involved are Barton, Pawnee, Edwards, Stafford and Pratt. ElderCare serves about 150 clients in this area.

Anyone who receives home-care services in these counties is eligible for the Giving Tree Project.

Our local caregivers serve as our eyes and ears when visiting private homes,” Gruber said. “They give us suggestions about specific wants and needs. Caregivers also deliver the gifts and share some Christmas joy with their clients.”

Donors could include individuals, businesses, churches and civic groups. Anyone who knows a senior citizen who could benefit from this project is encouraged to contact ElderCare.

The non-profit agency’s home-health services include personal care, household tasks and respite for caregivers. Registered nurses offer medication management, wellness checks and companionship.

Russell Eyecare Center is offering the latest technology for retinal imaging, known as Optomap. This ultra-wide retinal imaging captures over 80% of the eye, whereas traditional imaging allows for only a 15% view. By looking at your retina, doctors can see signs of disease including stroke, diabetes, and some cancers, making Optomap a great tool for prevention when used at annual eye exams.

Eagle Radio's news week in review

Forty-one years is long enough. The USD 428 Board of Education accepted the retirement of Great Bend High School Principal Tim Friess, effective June 1, 2024, during last Monday's meeting. The dream of being a coach turned into the goal of being an educator. That all started when Friess was just a teenager at Lyons High School.

"I thought when I was 16 years old as a junior I wanted to coach," he said. "I figured the only way you can coach is if you're going to teach. I decided as a junior in high school that I wanted to be a teacher and a coach."

Friess graduated from Lyons in 1978, then attended the University of Kansas, where he was recruited to play running back but ended up as a defensive end for the football team. After graduating as a Jayhawk, Friess began his career in Great Bend in the fall of 1983. He spent the first two years splitting time as a physical education teacher at GBHS and as an adaptive PE teacher at the elementary schools. He spent the next 11 years as PE teacher at Lincoln and Washington schools.

And he lived out his dream of coaching. Friess coached 13 years of freshman basketball before taking his first administration role as assistant principal at GBHS in 1996. He also spent eight years as a varsity football assistant coach before taking over head coaching duties for three seasons from 1988-90. 

In 2008, Friess received his final promotion to principal at GBHS. He said the biggest difference between his administrative and teaching roles was being 'in charge of people,' though that role never really stuck.

"I never considered myself in charge of anything like that," he said. "It took me away from the kids a little bit, which I tried not to let that happen. Teaching and being in the classroom or being on the playground with kids is a lot different than being in an office away from kids a lot of the time."

Friess accomplished many things in his 41 years with the district though no one single feat stood out. It was more about carrying out a motto daily.

"I always felt like whatever the kid needed, we'd do the best we could to try and get it for them," he said. "I just tried to carry that through every day. If you've got it and you don't share it with others, it's wrong."

Friess plans to spend his new downtime with his wife, Brenda, and four grandchildren, all of whom live in Great Bend. He will miss his coworkers and carrying out the district's mission.

"Overall, I'll miss working with the people that are here," he said. "I'm proud of the fact that this school treats kids well and that's their first priority."

The USD 428 Board of Education accepted the retirement of Great Bend High School Principal Tim Friess, effective June 1, 2024, during last Monday's meeting. The dream of being a coach turned into the goal of being an educator. That all started when Friess was just a teenager at Lyons High School."I thought when I was 16 years old as a junior I wanted to coach," he said. "I figured the only way you can coach is if you're going to teach. I decided as a junior in high school that I wanted to be a teacher and a coach."Friess graduated from Lyons in 1978, then attended the University of Kansas, where he was recruited to play running back but ended up as a defensive end for the football team. After graduating as a Jayhawk, Friess began his career in Great Bend in the fall of 1983. He spent the first two years splitting time as a physical education teacher at GBHS and as an adaptive PE teacher at the elementary schools. He spent the next 11 years as PE teacher at Lincoln and Washington schools.And he lived out his dream of coaching. Friess coached 13 years of freshman basketball before taking his first administration role as assistant principal at GBHS in 1996. He also spent eight years as a varsity football assistant coach before taking over head coaching duties for three seasons from 1988-90. In 2008, Friess received his final promotion to principal at GBHS. He said the biggest difference between his administrative and teaching roles was being 'in charge of people,' though that role never really stuck."I never considered myself in charge of anything like that," he said. "It took me away from the kids a little bit, which I tried not to let that happen. Teaching and being in the classroom or being on the playground with kids is a lot different than being in an office away from kids a lot of the time."Friess accomplished many things in his 41 years with the district though no one single feat stood out. It was more about carrying out a motto daily."I always felt like whatever the kid needed, we'd do the best we could to try and get it for them," he said. "I just tried to carry that through every day. If you've got it and you don't share it with others, it's wrong."Friess plans to spend his new downtime with his wife, Brenda, and four grandchildren, all of whom live in Great Bend. He will miss his coworkers and carrying out the district's mission."Overall, I'll miss working with the people that are here," he said. "I'm proud of the fact that this school treats kids well and that's their first priority."

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2018 Ford Explorer driven by Jon Brent Hoener, 68, Pratt,&nbsp;was southbound on U.S. 281 just south of SW 60th Street.&nbsp; The SUV struck a deer entering the roadway.

EMS transported a passenger Beverly Jean&nbsp;Hallowell, 65, Pratt, to Pratt Medical Center. Hoener was not injured. Both were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Wheat Scoop: Kansas Wheat shares favorite recipes

Opening Day of pheasant and quail season typically means cooler weather in Kansas. That was not the case Saturday with highs in the 60s for much of the state. Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Manager Jason Wagner spent some time in Western Kansas over the weekend and was able to ask many hunters and biologists about bird numbers this year.

"It was a very wide range of answers," he said. "I'd say the vast majority of information is that it wasn't very good. There were quite a few hunters. They were finding a few birds here and there. The ones I talked to locally, again there wasn't much shining going on for at least the pheasants."

Quail numbers were a little better than pheasant numbers. Last October, pheasant counts were down around 19 percent across the state from a year earlier. Wagner said another dry year did not help numbers this year.

"I'm betting after last year's drought the bird numbers are fairly low still and the habitat is really good," he said, "which makes for even tougher conditions."

Pheasant numbers can take a few years to rebound. A wet 2019 season drove many of the birds away from Cheyenne Bottoms. The dry nesting conditions of today may lead to more pheasants in the future.

Upland bird numbers disappointing for Central Kansas hunters

On Thursday, Nov. 16, at approximately 4:14 p.m., an officer with the Great Bend Police Department conducted a stop on a bicyclist near the intersection of Broadway Avenue and Williams Street.&nbsp; 

The cyclist was identified as Joshua Kelly, age 25. The officer believed Kelly to have a warrant for his arrest in which Barton County Dispatch confirmed.&nbsp; The officer arrested Kelly, transporting him to the Barton County Jail. At the jail, Barton County Detention staff informed the officer that a syringe filled with a clear liquid, as well as marijuana were located in Kelly's belongings. Kelly informed the officer that the liquid was methamphetamine.&nbsp;

Kelly was charged with possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, introduction of contraband into correctional facility and booked on a $50,000 bond.

 </figure>On Thursday, Nov. 16, at approximately 4:14 p.m., an officer with the Great Bend Police Department conducted a stop on a bicyclist near the intersection of Broadway Avenue and Williams Street.&nbsp; The cyclist was identified as Joshua Kelly, age 25. The officer believed Kelly to have a warrant for his arrest in which Barton County Dispatch confirmed.&nbsp; The officer arrested Kelly, transporting him to the Barton County Jail. At the jail, Barton County Detention staff informed the officer that a syringe filled with a clear liquid, as well as marijuana were located in Kelly's belongings. TOPEKA&nbsp;– A Barton County court Thursday sentenced 44-year-old Lyndsay Nichole George to life in prison, according to Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach.

On Oct. 8, 2021, officers and firefighters responded to a fire at 59-year-old Teresa Dutton's home in the 2800 block of 29th Street in Great Bend.

First responders found Dutton inside and despite performing life-saving measures she died. A preliminary investigation of the incident, arson was determined to be the cause of the fire. Investigators also determined that the Dutton's death was the result of foul play, according to Sheriff Brian Bellendir.

Later that morning, the Great Bend Police Department responded to a residence in the 1500 block of Adams Street in Great Bend in reference to an aggravated burglary and battery related to the arson, homicide investigation.

The suspect left that area on foot and at approximately 8:12 a.m. was reported to be at Park Elementary School, 1801 Williams Street.&nbsp; Police officers located the suspect identified as Lyndsay George, in the 2000 Block of 19th Street.

After a physical altercation with police officers, George was arrested. After further investigation and interviews, George was booked into the Barton County jail on requested charges of murder in the 1st degree, aggravated arson, aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer, aggravated burglary, battery and criminal trespass.

During the course of the investigation, members of the Great Bend Police Department, Kansas Bureau of Investigation, Barton County Sheriff's Office, the Kansas Fire Marshal's Office and the A.T.F. obtained and executed search warrants in the 2800 block of 29th Street and at the Traveler's Budget Inn located at 4200 10th Street in Great Bend.

During the execution and thorough search of those locations, items of evidence were located and seized.&nbsp;

On July 6, 2023, George was found guilty of murder in the first degree for Dutton's death.

In addition to being sentenced to murder in the first degree, George was also sentenced for other crimes associated with the murder:&nbsp;aggravated arson, aggravated burglary, assault on a law enforcement officer, disorderly conduct, battery, and cruelty to animals. 

She was ordered to pay $5,990 in restitution for crime victim's compensation.

"The statements by Teresa Dutton's family members in court highlighted her compassion and empathy for others," Deputy Attorney General Vic Braden said. "The sentencing handed down&nbsp;by the court provided appropriate legal accountability for the murder of Teresa."

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation, assisted by the Great Bend Police Department, investigated the crime. Braden and Assistant Attorney General Adam Brewer presented the state's case.
