Five candidates have filed for four open positions on the USD 428 Great Bend Board of Education that will be determined in the Nov. 7 general election. Four of those candidates took questions during a candidate forum at the Great Bend Senior Center Thursday evening.

Each of the four candidates answered two questions. Aaron Emerson, the current board vice president, has three children of his own in the district. As a former staff sergeant who spent eight years in the U.S. Army, including two deployments with a combat support hospital, and as a member on several local boards and committees, Emerson was pleased to answer the first question pertaining to how the district can increase student civic involvement. 

"Civic engagement is very important to me," he said. "I'm involved in several groups. I always make sure my kids know what I'm doing. They're always asking, 'What are you doing, Dad?' If I can, I always try to take them along to get them started at a young age, to get them involved and show them what's out there for them."

Randy Wetzel is a Great Bend High School graduate and a longtime Great Bend resident. He recently retired after spending 20 years as an assistant principal at GBHS, and he saw how involved students are firsthand. 

"Our kids we have at the high school I'm most familiar with did a great job with it," he said. "We have a lot of kids that are already involved with civic things. Kayettes are one, the football team was helping out with the food train on West 10th. There are plenty of opportunities for the kids, and they take them. Can we do more? Absolutely."

Karen Lindberg and Sara Williams also attended Thursday's forum at the Senior Center. Marcus Herrera has filed to run in the election but was absent Thursday. Comments from Lindberg and Williams will be featured in a story later this week.

Following a nine percent weekly decline last week, Monday's prices for Nymex, near-month light sweet crude was up nearly five percent, gaining $3.84 to $86.63 per barrel.

Friday's price for Kansas Common crude at CHS was $73 a barrel, down $8 from the first of the month. Kansas Common ended the month of September at $81 a barrel. The average for the month was a fraction below $80. That's up ten percent from the September average of $71.69 per barrel. September prices in McPherson were up nearly seven percent from a year ago. &nbsp;

The auto club AAA says slack demand and falling costs have trimmed your gasoline expenses. The national average pump price is down a nickel from a month ago at $3.76 per gallon. Prices in Kansas are seven cents lower than last month, at $3.56 per gallon. Local fill-up cost for a 15-gallon tank were slightly lower, but remained about six dollars higher than six months ago.

U.S. crude-oil inventories dropped by more than two million barrels from the ten-week lows set last week to just over 414 million barrels as of September 29. The Energy Information Administration says crude stockpiles nationwide are about five percent below the five-year average for this time of year. Stockpiles at the storage hub in Cushing, Oklahoma were actually a little higher for the first time in eight weeks.

U.S. operators pumped more than 12.9 million barrels per day for the fourth week in a row. The government said domestic output is up 4,000 barrels per day from week ago and nearly 900,000 barrels per day ahead of a year ago.

Crude-oil imports dropped by 730,000 barrels per day last week to just over 7.9 million bpd. The four-week average is up 2.7% from last year at this time.

The weekly Rotary Rig Count from Baker Hughes has declined with few interruptions for months, and has now reached it's lowest total since February of last year. The oil-rig tally on Friday was down five active rigs. The count in Texas was down seven rigs, while New Mexico was up four. Oklahoma was up two rigs.

The Kansas Rig Count from Independent Oil and Gas Service (IOGSI) was unchanged from last week at 12 active rigs east of Wichita and 25 in Western Kansas. The tally is up 2.8% from last month and down 36% from last year. Drilling was underway Friday on leases in Barton and Ellis counties.

Kansas Operators completed 38 wells last week, five of them in Western Kansas. That's 1,314 well-completions so far this year statewide, which is up 77 wells from the total a year ago. &nbsp;

IOGSI reports 40 new drilling permits, with ten in Western Kansas including two in Barton County and three in Ellis County. Total new drilling locations so far this year outnumber the tally from a year ago by 169 permits.

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has ordered the regulation of fuel oil prices for the heating season in Russia. Moscow’s ban on exports of gasoline and diesel will remain in place for as long as necessary, according to reporting by Reuters.

Saudi Arabia and Russia reaffirmed that they will stick with oil production curbs of more than one million barrels per day until the end of the year. The leaders of the OPEC+ coalition announced the plans in separate official statements last week. Riyadh has slashed crude oil production by a million barrels per day, and Moscow is curbing exports by 300,000 barrels per day, on top of earlier cuts made with fellow OPEC+ exporters.

Despite some big projects getting the green light, the Biden Administration is slamming the brakes on a lot of oil-and-gas production on public lands. The Interior Department announced steps to thwart oil development from the remote reaches of Alaska to the open seas off U.S. shores. They're canceling leases to drill in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge that were sold during the Trump Administration. That initiative will not affect existing leases in the reserve, including ConocoPhillips’ gigantic new Willow project. Oil industry leaders and their allies on Capitol Hill argue the administration is unfairly constraining development in the reserve, which is about the size of Indiana and was set aside by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1903.

The Administration is also cutting back on offshore lease auctions. Officials released plans last week for three auctions of offshore drilling rights over the next five years. Bloomberg reports the leasing program offers the fewest auctions ever offered since the government started planning them in five-year blocks.

The government released monthly crude-oil production stats for July, showing the second-best national output ever, at 12,991,000 barrels per day. That's the best monthly average since the all-time high nearly four years ago. Texas led the way with output of more than 5.6 million barrels per day, which is an all-time record. The report shows Kansas output of 74,000 barrels per day in July, which is down slightly from June. Kansas ranks 12th in the list of crude-producing states in July. The top five are Texas, New Mexico, North Dakota, Colorado and Oklahoma.

Oil-by-rail traffic was up by 262 tanker car-loads compared to the week before, at 10,169 tanker carloads. The Association of American Railroads says that's a nearly ten percent increase over the same week last year. AAR reports overall rail traffic in September was up 1.5 percent over a year ago. The trade group says shipments of petroleum and petroleum products was one of 13 cargo categories that posted gains last month, up 16.6% year-over-year.

Electricity demand reaches its second highest peak ever. On July 27, 2023, peak hourly electricity demand in the continental United States reached 741,815 megawatt-hours.&nbsp; The Energy Information Administration says this peak was the second highest since the agency began tracking demand seven years ago. EIA says the all-time high, the peak peak, was over 742,000 megawatt-hours, set on on July 20, 2022.&nbsp;&nbsp;

News from the Oil Patch: Near-record U.S. production continues

Halloween is now just a few weeks away. Many local organizations are gearing up for their own events prior to the big day. GPS Kids Club in Hoisington is hosting its third annual Family Fun Night on Saturday, Oct. 21 from 4-7 p.m. Former GPS Board Member Alicia Boor said there will be some changes for this year's event.

"This year, it's being moved to the city auditorium where we will be able to set up," she said. "We will still have our haunted hall the kids can go through. We have a bunch of different games they can play like ring toss, tic-tac-toe, stuff like that. Kids can come, dress up in their costumes one extra time, and maybe get a couple pieces of candy."

Tickets for activities at Family Fun Night are $1 each, and Boor said most activities will require one or two tickets. Light Halloween-themed refreshments will be served, and a hayrack ride will take all the ghouls and goblins around town.

Proceeds will benefit GPS kids. Boor's own son was a GPS kid from grades K-6. She said the social interaction and community service done through the club are beneficial to kids and families.

"They make sure they feed them a good, healthy meal when they get done with school for the day," Boor said. "They really help them with their homework. My son never brought home homework, so in the evening, we were able to have family time. It ensured he was doing well in his studies."

Boor said most families will spend about an hour at Family Fun Night. Tickets are cash only at the Hoisington City Auditorium located at 109 E. First Street.

Shopping for healthy foods has become more difficult than ever. As new products continue to hit the shelves, claims found on food packaging can be challenging to navigate. Many health buzzwords can make a person think that a certain food is better than another, but that’s not always the case. This is why it is always important to read food labels and ingredient lists.

No matter the branding, healthy foods are likely low in saturated fats, sodium, and added sugars. Saturated fats are okay in small amounts but too much can cause cholesterol to build up in your arteries. Sodium is hidden in most packaged foods, and it leads to high blood pressure. In fact, most Americans consume almost 150% above the recommended sodium daily intake, and to no surprise, more than 122 million Americans have high blood pressure. Sugar found in naturally occurring foods such as fruit and milk are good for your body. These naturally occurring sugars are included in the “Total Sugars” on a food label which you don’t need to fret about too much. On the other hand, “Added Sugars” are not natural, and you should keep an eye out for them. A few common examples are high fructose corn syrup, cane juice, and malt syrup.

No matter the marketing, understanding food labels will help you know if a product is truly a good option. Nonetheless, there are many terms out there that may confuse shoppers. Let’s take a look at a few:

Light: You may assume that a product labeled “light” has fewer calories, but it can actually refer to the flavor- not the nutrition content.

Made with real fruit: Manufacturers do not have to include the percentage of fruit included in an item. In fact, a product “made with real fruit” can have as little as 1% of real fruit.

Multigrain/ Wheat: Just because a product label includes “multigrain” or “wheat” does not mean that it is 100% whole grain. Whole grains include more fiber, are less processed, and keep you fuller for longer. Checking the ingredient list to ensure a product is not made with enriched flour and is 100% whole grain is worthwhile.

Superfoods: The “superfood” marketing scheme can be applied to any food that is nutrient-dense. Many superfood products claim to have cancer-fighting properties, but there is little scientific basis to confirm this. It is certainly true that a balanced diet full of unprocessed, vitamin-rich foods can reduce the risk of cancer, but it is unlikely that any single product will have this impact.

WINKEL: How to navigate healthy food marketing

At last week’s USD 431 Board of Education meeting, school board
president Dean Stoskopf said several community members approached him about the
disarray of the retaining wall on the east side of the Hoisington High School
football field. 

USD 431 Superintendent Patrick Crowdis said the wall is not
caving in, but it just looks bad. The school district is looking at possible
solutions to repair the wall.


"The other thing we have to consider as well is I have to put in an application with the Kansas Historical Society to make that change," said Crowdis. "I'm also going to reach out to the Historical Society to see if there is any grant money that we might be able to utilize. This could be a $50,000 project."

Stoskopf noted the rough appearance of the wall and also the safety issue of
children running along the stone wall.
Crowdis said he has reached out to one individual that has a masonry background
but will contact others to get more estimates.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

"The other thing we have to consider as well is I have to put in an application with the Kansas Historical Society to make that change," said Crowdis. "I'm also going to reach out to the Historical Society to see if there is any grant money that we might be able to utilize. Area cemetery staff usually remind citizens to remove flowers and decorations from headstones following the Memorial Day holiday. Barton County announced Friday that Saturday, Oct. 21 will be a similar cleanup day for Golden Belt and Hillcrest Memorial Parks and Cemetery. County Works Director Darren Williams said the county is getting some help for the cleanup.

"According to the rules, people are supposed to remove the flowers after 7-10 days after a holiday," he said. "The Evening Lions Club, they do about 20 hours a year of community service. They thought that'd be a good project for them to come pick up the flowers out of the cemeteries."

The Great Bend Evening Lions Club will begin removing damaged and unsightly items, as well as trash and debris, from the grounds that Saturday. County employees will not attempt to find owners of items once they are removed.

 "We're just wanting to give the public a heads up they can come out and pick them up if they want to use them for the next holiday," said Williams. "If not, they're going to be disposed of."

All three cemeteries are located on Northwest 50 Road in Barton County. Maintenance is performed by the County Road and Bridge Department.

Kansas author Glenn Ediger left no threshing stone unturned as he embarked on a historical treasure hunt for the tools used by the Mennonites who settled in and around central Kansas. From his own front yard to Threshing Days in Gossel, he uncovered the unique set of events that brought some of the most innovative farmers in the world to Kansas and established hard red winter wheat as a Kansas staple. He recently shared what he learned with listeners of the “Wheat’s On Your Mind” podcast.&nbsp;

“They came at the invitation of the state of Kansas and the Santa Fe Railroad to develop the prairie into a rich and productive agricultural economy. These groups of families brought with them Turkey Red winter wheat, and as they say, the rest is history. But there’s so much more to this story.”

An invitation and an escape From the establishment of their religion, the Mennonites had a reputation for being good, industrious farmers. As a result of this reputation and their continued pursuit of religious freedom, their communities moved from their origins in the Netherlands to Prussia (what is now Poland) to develop lands for farming. Later, when religious freedoms in the country were curtailed, the Mennonites took the invitation of Catherine the Great to relocate to western Russia (what is now Ukraine) in the late 1700s and early 1800s. That included Ediger’s ancestors, who moved to Russia in 1810 and farmed there for roughly 60 years.&nbsp;

“They did create a fertile farming culture with a lot of innovations — what types of crops to grow and how to better preserve crops and how to influence better growth with things like fertilization and summer fallow,” Ediger explained. “They really advanced that with creating and developing alternative hard winter wheats that were quite successful in that community.”&nbsp;

Recruitment by the railroad&nbsp; Around this time, Kansas was being marketed as the crown jewel for agriculture in the United States, driven by the construction of the railroad. But, the region needed more people and more commerce, so the Santa Fe railroad drove a campaign to recruit more settlers from other countries to move to Kansas, including the Mennonites. Those efforts included Carl B. Schmidt, who was an implement dealer recruited by the railroads to encourage the Mennonites to move to the United States.&nbsp;

“C.B. Schmidt was an implement dealer; he spoke German; and Schmidt is a common Mennonite name, even though he was not Mennonite,” Ediger said. “There was competition to get the Mennonites to the United States all through the Midwest, from Canada down through Oklahoma. So Carl went to Ukraine and talked to local Mennonites and convinced them how wonderful Kansas was.”

The railroad also paid for ambassadors from the Mennonites to come to tour the Central Plains, including surveying different properties. In the end, Kansas had the most appealing set of laws (religious freedoms and the promise of not being conscripted into the military), availability of land they could afford, fertile ground and climate similar to where they were currently farming. The railroad made the deal even sweeter by building homes for early immigrants and supplying seed for the first wheat crops planted.&nbsp;

Planting the seed for Turkey Red wheat And so Mennonites came to Kansas and brought with them their agricultural innovations and their hard red wheats, including hand-picked seeds packed into large jars and sacks. This Turkey Red wheat was a hardy variety, was planted in the fall and could withstand Kansas’ cold and dry winters. The new wheat could take advantage of the moisture that arrives in the winter and early spring and then be harvested in early summer. While the adoption of this new class of wheat took time, its introduction revolutionized the wheat industry in Kansas, and Turkey Red wheat is now the ancestor to all hard red winter wheat varieties grown across the plains today.&nbsp;

“Part of that slow adoption was that the milling industry was just not ready for it; their technology was targeted towards soft wheat,” Ediger said. “But over time they found out that the hard winter wheat was much better quality.”&nbsp;

“It took many years to get the acreage developed, but it really then did become the most desirable wheat in the world. There was nothing like it at that point in time.”

Perfecting agricultural practices Along with Turkey Red wheat, the Mennonites also brought game-changing farming practices, including leaving fields fallow in between planting cycles, applying fertilizer to fields and using large threshing stones to separate the wheat kernels from the stalks that enveloped them. The basic process of threshing wheat is the same today as it was thousands of years ago, as Ediger explained.&nbsp;

“Back then, they would grab a stack of heads and beat it against a rock to thresh the wheat. And then you had to separate the chaff from the wheat,” Ediger said. “That’s the same process that the modern combine does technically — cut the wheat, thresh to break the grain out of the heads, and then separate the grain from the chaff.”&nbsp;

The process is the same whether someone takes a stalk of wheat out of the field and rubs it in their hand, uses a flail to beat out the wheat kernels or has horses trot over wheat piles to remove the grain — all of which have been done around the world.&nbsp;

Or one can use a threshing stone. A threshing stone is a stone, usually limestone, that is rolled over the grain to thresh the kernels out. It is a big piece of stone, 30 inches long and 24 inches in diameter with seven grooves carved around it, giving the appearance of a gear, and weighing between 400 and 800 pounds. In the middle, there’s a hole drilled that would go through for an axle, which would be supported by two wooden or steel beams that could come around the front so it could be hooked up to horses. The horses could go around in a circle pulling the stone over the grain.&nbsp;

This process takes place on a threshing floor, which would be hard-packed dirt in Kansas or Ukraine. Threshing could take a long time. The wheat would be piled up and this stone would be pulled in a circle of the pile and the grain would fall to the bottom of the floor. People with pitchforks and rakes would keep stirring the straw, and the straw would be thrown to the outside so the grain drops to the floor and would be scooted and shoveled toward the center. Then they had to blow away the lightweight chaff to keep the grain there. Farmers would use the wind.&nbsp;

“On the right day, you’d take a shovel and throw the wheat and the chaff up in the air and the wind would blow the chaff and the wheat would fall to the ground,” Ediger said. “That’s the final step of threshing.”&nbsp;

The threshing stone was not exclusive to Mennonites, having been used by the Romans, Chinese and Australians, but they perfected it, especially since Kansas limestone quarries — like that in Chase County — provided perfectly suited stones.

A stony Kansas treasure hunt While useful, the threshing stones became obsolete rather quickly in Kansas due to the development of threshing machines, which were horse-powered and later steam-powered. This makes finding threshing stones in Kansas relatively difficult.&nbsp;

After his wife inherited a threshing stone from his family, Ediger decided to see what research had been done into their background. He discovered not much research had been conducted other than general basic knowledge, so he set off on a treasure hunt to find as many as he could in order to photograph and document them. That included going to community events, like the Threshing Days festivals in Gossel, and other places where people gathered to celebrate the threshing process.&nbsp;

He was surprised to find most of the stones in a four-county area of Marion, McPherson, Reno and Harvey counties — Mennonite turf. He discovered the threshing stone was even adopted at one time as the mascot for Bethel College. Eventually, he compiled his learnings into the book, “Leave No Threshing Stone Unturned,” which shares the history of the Mennonites and their threshing stones.

Today, threshing stones have been replaced by combines. The remaining stones are now used for yard decorations, others are used for salt licks for cattle, some are even bases for lamps or flags. But their influence on the wheat industry — along with the Mennonites who still farm in central Kansas — remains as steadfast as stone.&nbsp;

In the end, Kansas had the most appealing set of laws (religious freedoms and the promise of not being conscripted into the military), availability of land they could afford, fertile ground and climate similar to where they were currently farming. The railroad made the deal even sweeter by building homes for early immigrants and supplying seed for the first wheat crops planted.&nbsp;Planting the seed for Turkey Red wheat And so Mennonites came to Kansas and brought with them their agricultural innovations and their hard red wheats, including hand-picked seeds packed into large jars and sacks. This Turkey Red wheat was a hardy variety, was planted in the fall and could withstand Kansas’ cold and dry winters. The new wheat could take advantage of the moisture that arrives in the winter and early spring and then be harvested in early summer. While the adoption of this new class of wheat took time, its introduction revolutionized the wheat industry in Kansas, and Turkey Red wheat is now the ancestor to all hard red winter wheat varieties grown across the plains today.&nbsp;“Part of that slow adoption was that the milling industry was just not ready for it; their technology was targeted towards soft wheat,” Ediger said. “But over time they found out that the hard winter wheat was much better quality.”&nbsp;“It took many years to get the acreage developed, but it really then did become the most desirable wheat in the world. There was nothing like it at that point in time.”Perfecting agricultural practices Along with Turkey Red wheat, the Mennonites also brought game-changing farming practices, including leaving fields fallow in between planting cycles, applying fertilizer to fields and using large threshing stones to separate the wheat kernels from the stalks that enveloped them. The basic process of threshing wheat is the same today as it was thousands of years ago, as Ediger explained.&nbsp;“Back then, they would grab a stack of heads and beat it against a rock to thresh the wheat. And then you had to separate the chaff from the wheat,” Ediger said. “That’s the same process that the modern combine does technically — cut the wheat, thresh to break the grain out of the heads, and then separate the grain from the chaff.”&nbsp;The process is the same whether someone takes a stalk of wheat out of the field and rubs it in their hand, uses a flail to beat out the wheat kernels or has horses trot over wheat piles to remove the grain — all of which have been done around the world.&nbsp;Or one can use a threshing stone. A threshing stone is a stone, usually limestone, that is rolled over the grain to thresh the kernels out. It is a big piece of stone, 30 inches long and 24 inches in diameter with seven grooves carved around it, giving the appearance of a gear, and weighing between 400 and 800 pounds. In the middle, there’s a hole drilled that would go through for an axle, which would be supported by two wooden or steel beams that could come around the front so it could be hooked up to horses. The horses could go around in a circle pulling the stone over the grain.&nbsp;This process takes place on a threshing floor, which would be hard-packed dirt in Kansas or Ukraine. Threshing could take a long time. The wheat would be piled up and this stone would be pulled in a circle of the pile and the grain would fall to the bottom of the floor. People with pitchforks and rakes would keep stirring the straw, and the straw would be thrown to the outside so the grain drops to the floor and would be scooted and shoveled toward the center. Then they had to blow away the lightweight chaff to keep the grain there. Farmers would use the wind.&nbsp;“On the right day, you’d take a shovel and throw the wheat and the chaff up in the air and the wind would blow the chaff and the wheat would fall to the ground,” Ediger said. “That’s the final step of threshing.”&nbsp;The threshing stone was not exclusive to Mennonites, having been used by the Romans, Chinese and Australians, but they perfected it, especially since Kansas limestone quarries — like that in Chase County — provided perfectly suited stones.A stony Kansas treasure hunt While useful, the threshing stones became obsolete rather quickly in Kansas due to the development of threshing machines, which were horse-powered and later steam-powered. This makes finding threshing stones in Kansas relatively difficult.&nbsp;After his wife inherited a threshing stone from his family, Ediger decided to see what research had been done into their background. He discovered not much research had been conducted other than general basic knowledge, so he set off on a treasure hunt to find as many as he could in order to photograph and document them. That included going to community events, like the Threshing Days festivals in Gossel, and other places where people gathered to celebrate the threshing process.&nbsp;He was surprised to find most of the stones in a four-county area of Marion, McPherson, Reno and Harvey counties — Mennonite turf. He discovered the threshing stone was even adopted at one time as the mascot for Bethel College. Eventually, he compiled his learnings into the book, “Leave No Threshing Stone Unturned,” which shares the history of the Mennonites and their threshing stones.Today, threshing stones have been replaced by combines. The remaining stones are now used for yard decorations, others are used for salt licks for cattle, some are even bases for lamps or flags. Board Policy - JBCC – Enrollment of Nonresident Students &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; This required new board policy outlines the requirements for the enrollment for nonresident students, including required actions such as determining capacity, accepting applications, and the admission of nonresident students. Russell Co. lake still on blue-green algae warning list

The
drought monitor report as of 8 a.m. Tuesday, October 5, shows no real change
for our area this week.&nbsp; Southwest Kansas
is the overall best shape for the state followed by Northwest Kansas.&nbsp; Unusual for this time of year. &nbsp;The six to ten-day outlook (October 11 to 15) indicates
something we haven’t seen in a while – near normal temperatures and
precipitation.&nbsp; Normal temperatures are
in the mid to low 70s which is good.&nbsp;
Normal precipitation isn’t much which is good for harvesting crops but
not for wheat.&nbsp; The eight to fourteen-day
outlook (October 13 to 19) indicates normal temperatures and a 40 to 50% chance
of below normal for precipitation.&nbsp;
Remember normal is only about two inches for the month.&nbsp; Those areas fortunate to receive beneficial
rains this week should feel blessed.&nbsp;
That maybe it for a while.

By the time this is published, we
may have flirted with 32 degrees for a low.&nbsp;
Many are tired of summer but dread winter and freezing temperatures.&nbsp; Yet in agriculture, while early freezing
temperatures in the fall and late ones in the spring aren’t helpful, overall
cold and winter are extremely beneficial in many ways.&nbsp; How?&nbsp;
Let’s see.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Without
winter, insect pest pressure would be much worse for crops and livestock.&nbsp; Some pests, like the sugarcane aphid outbreak
from several years ago would be much worse as they know can’t overwinter here
and have to move in from the Southeast U.S.&nbsp;


·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Disease
pressure would also be much worse.&nbsp;
Currently, a disease like leaf rust can’t overwinter here and if we have
pressure, it must blow in from Texas in the spring.&nbsp; Mush better than having it present
year-round.&nbsp; And there are other examples
like rust in soybeans.&nbsp; For wheat
producers, barley yellow dwarf would be more problematic without winter
controlling aphids.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Imagine
how much are summer annual weed pressure would be without winter.&nbsp; Not to mention perennial weeds like bindweed
and johnsongrass.&nbsp; Many summer annual

structure is improved by freezing and thawing, especially with soil

United Way of Central Kansas (UWCK) is excited to announce the upcoming Poverty Simulation event, made possible by the generous funding from Communities Organizing to Promote Equity (COPE)-Barton County. This unique program aims to provide the community with a firsthand experience of living in poverty and foster a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by families living in low-income situations.

The Poverty Simulation, named Poverty Paradigm through ESSDACK, is scheduled to take place on November 2nd from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. Participants will have the opportunity to role play as individuals experiencing survival mode, simulating four 15-minute weeks. Through this immersive experience, attendees will gain valuable insights into the daily struggles and difficult decisions faced by those living in poverty. Following the simulation will be a panel discussion.

The ultimate goal of the Poverty Paradigm simulation is to initiate shifts necessary to activate great generational change. By offering participants a glimpse into the realities of poverty, UWCK aims to foster empathy, understanding, and inspire action towards creating a more equitable society.

This event is highly recommended for board members of non-profit organizations, church groups, civic organizations, and individuals working closely with those living in poverty. By participating in the Poverty Paradigm simulation, attendees will gain new perspectives and develop strategies to better serve their communities.

United Way brings Poverty Simulation to central Kansas

The grounds of the Santa Fe Trail Center Museum will soon be filled with the rumbling of the sounds of antique and vintage farm equipment. Prepare for a carnival-like atmosphere, and join the crowd as everyone enjoys the weekend of farming, food and fun. Join them on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 14-15 for the 23rd Annual Tired Iron Show.

This year’s event will focus on the centennial anniversary of Farmall tractors. Members of the Kansas Chapter #3 International Harvester Collectors Club will be present with a booth, and some of their vintage equipment to highlight the event. When you arrive, be sure to enter through the Peddlers Market gateway to see the booths of various arts, crafts and collectables. There will be several food concession trucks as well.

One of the many returning activities at this year’s event includes the ever-popular Anvil Shoot. The Kansas Anvil Shooters will shoot the anvil three times each day. On both Saturday and Sunday there will be scheduled demonstrations of wheat threshing, corn shelling, and blacksmithing. There will also be a working miniature farm equipment display. The tractor pull will begin Sunday morning at 10:00.

 </figure>The grounds of the Santa Fe Trail Center Museum will soon be filled with the rumbling of the sounds of antique and vintage farm equipment. Prepare for a carnival-like atmosphere, and join the crowd as everyone enjoys the weekend of farming, food and fun. Join them on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 14-15 for the 23rd Annual Tired Iron Show.This year’s event will focus on the centennial anniversary of Farmall tractors. Members of the Kansas Chapter #3 International Harvester Collectors Club will be present with a booth, and some of their vintage equipment to highlight the event. When you arrive, be sure to enter through the Peddlers Market gateway to see the booths of various arts, crafts and collectables. There will be several food concession trucks as well.One of the many returning activities at this year’s event includes the ever-popular Anvil Shoot. The Kansas Anvil Shooters will shoot the anvil three times each day. On both Saturday and Sunday there will be scheduled demonstrations of wheat threshing, corn shelling, and blacksmithing. There will also be a working miniature farm equipment display. The tractor pull will begin Sunday morning at 10:00.A full schedule can be found on Facebook. The Santa Fe Trail Center is located 2 miles west of Larned on K-156. To reduce traffic, the main entrance is reserved for general admission, and all oversized vehicles are asked to use the new west entrance.

The drought across Kansas earlier this fall continues to have impacts into the fall. Farmers are well aware of the impacts of the dry conditions on their crops, but now city dwellers are seeing a side effect of the drought: grasshoppers. Cottonwood District Agriculture and Natural Resources Agent Alicia Boor explained why there are so many of the insects this year.

"Grasshoppers are really influenced by the dry weather," she said. "It increases their egg survivability. They'll eat anything, but the increase in broadleaf weeds has really helped them grow up and be much more prosperous."

Boor said with the size the grasshoppers are now, they are also migratory. That makes them difficult to control in town.

"Unless they are absolutely terrorizing an area, the recommendation is to wait them out," she said. "You spraying your yard is basically helping your neighbor out. The only way to really control them is to get your neighbor to spray for them, then they would not be in your yard."

With a lack of forage this late in the year, Boor said the insects may find their way to young alfalfa and wheat fields that are green and luscious. Producers should scout their fields for damage, and if the fields are large enough, consider spraying for the pests.

Crickets are also on the move heading into the cold months. Boor said they are more of a nuisance than a threat.
