Barton Dance Theatre’s will host another “Dancing with the Cougars” fundraiser class featuring a salsa and Latin dance class from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. March 19 in Studio 34, and all proceeds will go to support Barton Dance Theatre's trip to dance in New York City.&nbsp;

Barton Dance Instructor and Fine and Performing Arts Coordinator said not only will attendees learn some cool new moves, but they will also get a terrific workout.

“Latin dance uses the whole body and is a great low-impact cardio exercise,” she said. “Various dance styles will be taught including salsa, cha-cha, mambo, and merengue. We will teach the dances to be done solo and with a partner. Dance parties can happen on Tuesday nights.”

We all know that being active is good for health, and most of us know the benefits of movement. It supports immune function, strengthens bones and muscles, boosts mood, improves brain health, and the list goes on. However, the idea that time-consuming, strenuous workouts are necessary to reap these benefits is misleading. You don’t have to spend hours in the gym, pump iron, or belong to a fitness club. The truth is that moderate-intensity exercise for 30 minutes a day is sufficient to earn the benefits of physical activity.

One simple way to gauge moderate activity is called the “talk test.” If you can talk but not sing during exercise, this indicates that your heart rate is in the moderate zone. Since this is an individualized measurement, what is considered moderate for one person may be strenuous for another. One of my favorite ways to achieve moderate-intensity activity is walking because it is simple, affordable, and pace can be tailored to meet individual needs.

I may be biased, but I believe that walking is the most underrated form of physical activity. Before our world was modified for efficiency, walking was necessary for a majority of daily tasks. Now we can travel hundreds of miles in a few hours, order groceries online, and even work from home! While all of these things are incredibly convenient, we now have to be intentional about movement, and walking is a simple way to do this. In fact, there are lots of ways to sneak steps into your day!

Park in the back of the lot. Simply parking further away can help you increase daily movement. Choosing the stairs is another habit that will add up over time.

Utilize Zoom meetings. If you regularly attend virtual meetings or webinars, try marching in place or find a large room to walk around while you listen. Even better, if you have access to a treadmill, you can walk at a standing desk while working.

Take a lap after lunch. Walking during this time is a fantastic way to get active and refocus. Walking after a meal also decreases blood sugar, reduces cravings, and lowers stress.

Meet a friend to walk. Spending time with family and friends often involves eating out or meeting for coffee. Change up the scenery and meet at a local park or zoo for a social way to get active.

If you want a fun way to be intentional about movement, Walk Kansas may be the perfect opportunity this spring. This 8-week program encourages people to get moving by logging the number of steps or miles achieved each day. As a solo member or team, you can set a goal to walk across the state. Walk Kansas can help you make healthier nutrition choices, and you will learn techniques to reduce stress and sleep well. This year participants can also tune in for webinars about ‘The Science of Happiness,’ ‘Habit Shift - Making Tiny Habits Count,’ and foot care.

The Chinese refer to the dandelion as an "earth nail" because of its long and sturdy taproot. A single dandelion plant can produce 10 of the familiar yellow flowers and up to 2,000 seeds, most of which fall within 30 feet of the original plant. That can make controlling the weeds difficult. Alicia Boor, agriculture and natural resources agent in the Cottonwood District for K-State Research and Extension, said control should actually begin in November.

"If you see those now, you need to note where they are in your yard, then treat for those in November because they are a winter annual much like wheat is, where it comes up in the fall and slowly grows over the winter, then comes out and explodes and has the flowers so it can produce the seeds."

As the weather cools in the fall, the dandelions begin moving nutrients to that long taproot. Applying an herbicide at that time will help kill the plant. Fall sprays also help control other winter annuals including bindweed, chickweed, and henbit. The season for controlling other undesirables in the yard is quickly approaching.

"To control crabgrass, at this time of year, you want to use a crabgrass preventer," Boor said. "You can go get it at any of our local stores where you'd normally get your herbicides. It is a preventer, and you want to put that preventer down when the redbud trees on Broadway are in full bloom."

A crabgrass preventer eliminates the seedlings as they germinate. The herbicide should be applied once the ground temperature rises above 60 degrees. That typically coincides with shrubs blooming and trees budding.

United Way of Central Kansas (UWCK) proudly announces the return of #RealWorld, a program designed to equip high school seniors with crucial life skills as they prepare to embark on their post-graduation journeys. Building upon the success of Reality U, which debuted in Great Bend in 2016, UWCK has expanded its efforts to further bridge the gap between classroom education and real-world challenges.

Scheduled for March 22nd and 27th, #RealWorld will be hosted across multiple schools in the area, including Ellinwood, Great Bend, Hoisington, and Larned. UWCK collaborated closely with each school district to tailor the event to the specific needs and concerns of their students. The program aims to address topics that are often overlooked in traditional curricula but are essential for navigating adulthood successfully.

Through engaging presentations and interactive sessions, #RealWorld will cover a range of pertinent subjects, including financial literacy, car maintenance, leases, healthcare basics, and more. Expert speakers from various fields will share insights and practical advice, empowering students to make informed decisions as they transition into independent living.

One of the key aspects of #RealWorld is its emphasis on sparking meaningful conversations between students and their families about the challenges and responsibilities they will face beyond high school. By fostering open dialogue, UWCK hopes to facilitate a smoother transition for both students and their support networks.

"We are thrilled to bring #RealWorld back to our community for another year," said Charell Owings, Executive Director of UWCK. "Empowering our youth with the knowledge and skills they need to thrive in the real world is central to our mission. Rosewood Miracle Workers AKTION Club completed its annual community blanket drive this spring by donating to two organizations, which are headquartered in Great Bend. Club representatives donated blankets to Barton County Health Department, and Family Crisis Center. The blanket drive was conducted from January through February this year.

“We appreciate the community stepping up once again to help provide blankets to two deserving organizations in our community,” said Rosewood AKTION Club sponsor Frankie Pelster. “Our AKTION Club members understand the importance of providing blankets to area children, so much so that it’s been their choice to keep this community fund drive going for the past 11 years. Over that time, we’ve provided a lot of blankets, but we know every year, there are always more needed.”&nbsp;

The blankets were a welcomed donation to Family Crisis Center, 1924 Broadway Ave., as blankets are given to every child within the organization that serves an 11-county area. Family Crisis Center has also recently started providing blankets with bags to area hospitals to give to patients involved in the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Program.&nbsp;

“I’m completely grateful to Rosewood AKTION Club for conducting this drive,” said Kylee Graves, executive director of Family Crisis Center.&nbsp; “We have an amazing community with lots of organizations and people willing to help each other. I hope we can continue being able to give back what we can. Likewise, I hope that other organizations can continue to bless us with their giving, as well. We appreciate the support.”

The Barton County Health Department, 1300 Kansas Ave. STE B, follows Barton County mothers through their pregnancies and present parents with a blanket for their newborns. Because of their demand for blankets as gifts, they are always in need of more blankets.

“We take the blankets to our Healthy Start home visits and give them to the infants that just got home from the hospital,” explained Savannah Bochy, Healthy Start Home Visitor for the department. “The large blankets, we give to the adults during home and clinic visits. We rely heavily on blanket donations; we use all of them. They go to the infants and newborns and to mothers and parents who don’t have the financial ability to have enough blankets, otherwise.”

Club representatives donated blankets to Barton County Health Department, and Family Crisis Center. The blanket drive was conducted from January through February this year.“We appreciate the community stepping up once again to help provide blankets to two deserving organizations in our community,” said Rosewood AKTION Club sponsor Frankie Pelster. “Our AKTION Club members understand the importance of providing blankets to area children, so much so that it’s been their choice to keep this community fund drive going for the past 11 years. Over that time, we’ve provided a lot of blankets, but we know every year, there are always more needed.”&nbsp;The blankets were a welcomed donation to Family Crisis Center, 1924 Broadway Ave., as blankets are given to every child within the organization that serves an 11-county area. Family Crisis Center has also recently started providing blankets with bags to area hospitals to give to patients involved in the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Program.&nbsp;“I’m completely grateful to Rosewood AKTION Club for conducting this drive,” said Kylee Graves, executive director of Family Crisis Center.&nbsp; “We have an amazing community with lots of organizations and people willing to help each other. Because of their demand for blankets as gifts, they are always in need of more blankets.“We take the blankets to our Healthy Start home visits and give them to the infants that just got home from the hospital,” explained Savannah Bochy, Healthy Start Home Visitor for the department. “The large blankets, we give to the adults during home and clinic visits. We rely heavily on blanket donations; we use all of them. Gray Photo Studio (GPS), a building with a rich history, is transforming into the Art Center at Gray Photo Studio. In partnership with Stafford County Economic Development, Inc. (SCED), GPS has recently received the Historic Economic Asset Lifeline (HEAL) grant.

The HEAL grant is $50,000 and is matched with an additional $50,000 loan from SJN Bank of Kansas. This grant will go toward restoration efforts to complete the GPS building. Still, there is more to be done to get the building and center ready to open.

In an effort to raise additional funds, GPS in partnership with SCED, is doing an online Art Auction. Artists have donated pieces of their art to be auctioned off. There are 10 artists participating, donating 100 percent of the money to the GPS project.

The Barton County Planning Commission is officially putting the ball in someone else's court. After 10 months of developing regulations regarding large-scale commercial and non-commercial solar development in the county, and after several lengthy meetings on the subject, the all-volunteer panel voted Thursday morning to make its recommendation on the matter. The Barton County Board of Commissioners will vote to approve or not approve that recommendation at a future meeting. Zoning Administrator Judy Goreham said a 14-day protest period began with Thursday's recommendation.

"The soonest the county commission can vote is April 2," she said. "So, I will be reporting to them that we have a problem with the moratorium. I am hopeful they will get me on the agenda next Tuesday or the Tuesday after asking for an extension. I'm going to ask for 30 days because there's a possibility they will send one or all three back to the planning commission, and you need to have enough time to have a second meeting."

The planning board made final revisions and recommended the proposed solar regulations, district regulations, and a new zoning map that includes a 2-mile no-build zone around Cheyenne Bottoms. The moratorium on the construction of any large-scale solar projects is set to expire on March 31.

After speaking with officials in Douglas County, the Barton planning board agreed to one major addition to the regulations. Any large-scale commercial solar developer will be required to notify all landowners within a mile of the proposed location.

"The reason this is so important is it puts the pressure of conflict on the applicant," Goreham said. "The applicant has to do full disclosure and transparency ahead, and have a person designated to handle questions, answer their questions, answer their concerns, so when the application comes to the county, we're doing the work of doing the review of the application."

The application process is an extensive one. Douglas County reported it took more than half a dozen workers more than four months to process a single application. By statute, planning boards have 45 days to decide on an application. The Barton board also added a third-party requirement to its regulations. The applicant will pay for that independent third party to work through the application process, and that third party will then report to the planning board.

Most of Thursday's work involved modifications made to the original draft after the board heard from citizens during open meetings. Some highlights include:

- An extraordinary event is now defined as large-scale or system-wide damage to solar panels, solar modules, or solar arrays and facilities due to wind, storm, hail, fire, flood, earthquake or other natural disaster, explosion, grievous injury to any citizen or employee, or similar event.

- Wildlife is defined as living things, especially mammals, birds, and fish, vertebrates, reptiles, and amphibians that are neither human nor domesticated.

- The wildlife corridor definition did not change though Goreham clarified the first sentence of the draft included the definition "a vegetated route or other connection which allows movement of wildlife." The words "other connection" can include air and sky.

- All solar panels must be constructed to minimize glare or reflection onto adjacent properties and adjacent roadways, and must not interfere with wildlife or traffic, including air traffic, or create a safety hazard as per any local, state, and federal laws and regulations.

- County counselor Patrick Hoffman supplied detailed language regarding liability insurance and the decommissioning of any solar project.

 - Wording was added pertaining to a groundwater monitoring plan.

The final draft of the regulations will be posted to the Barton County website once updates from Thursday are complete. Now that the planning board has made its recommendation on the solar regulations, the board of commissioners can approve the recommendations with a simple major (3-2) vote, or reject or modify the recommendations with a supermajority (4-1) vote.

At 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, Great Bend Fire and EMS crews were dispatched to US 56 Highway and SW 30 Avenue for the report of a head on accident involving a pickup and a semi-truck.  Crews found a semi-truck and a pickup in the middle of the highway that struck head on.  The vehicles sustained substantial damage. 

 All drivers and passengers were out of the vehicles upon arrival.  One patient was transported to The University of Kansas Health System - Great Bend Campus for further treatment.  

GBFD was assisted at the accident scene by the Barton County Sheriff's Office and Kansas Highway Patrol.

Great Bend EMS responds to head-on crash on 56 Highway

For Kansas gardeners, St. Patrick’s Day means something much more than donning a favorite green outfit and heading to local celebrations.

Traditionally, the Irish holiday signals the date for planting potatoes.

“Actually, anytime from mid- to late-March is fine for potato planting,” said Kansas State University horticulture expert Cynthia Domenghini.

“Be sure to buy seed potatoes rather than using those bought for cooking. Seed potatoes are certified disease free and have plenty of starch to sprout as quickly as soil temperatures allow.”

Domenghini notes that most seed potatoes can be cut into four pieces – “though large potatoes may yield more,” she said. Each seed should weight between 1 ½ to 2 ounces, and likely more than one eye.

Each pound of seed potatoes should yield 8 to 10 pieces, according to Domenghini.

“Cut the seed 2 to 3 days before planting so that freshly cut surfaces have a chance to suberize, or toughen, which provides a protective coating,” Domenghini said. “Storing seed in a warm location during suberization will speed the process.”

Domenghini recommends planting each seed piece 1 to 2 inches deep and 8 to 12 inches apart in rows.

“Though it is important to plant potatoes in March, they emerge slowly,” she said. “It is often mid- to late-April before new plants poke their way through the soil. As the potatoes grow, pull soil up to the base of the plants. New potatoes are borne above the planted seed piece and it is important to keep sunlight from hitting the new potatoes.”

Domenghini said exposed potatoes will turn green and produce a poisonous substance called solanine. Keeping the potatoes covered will prevent this.

BOOR: Date for planting potatoes 

On Thursday, March 14, at about 12:39 a.m., Barton County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to 487 SE 80th Avenue for a reported structure fire. Upon arrival, deputies discovered a 30' x 30' shop building completely engulfed in flames.

Initial investigation indicates welding activity was in progress in the building when sparks or slag ignited the insulation in the wall. Witnesses stated the fire quickly spread and the four individuals in the shop were unable to bring it under control. The building was a total loss. There were no injuries.

The Ellinwood Fire Department brought the scene quickly under control and was assisted by fire crews from the Great Bend Fire Department.

 </figure>On Thursday, March 14, at about 12:39 a.m., Barton County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to 487 SE 80th Avenue for a reported structure fire. Upon arrival, deputies discovered a 30' x 30' shop building completely engulfed in flames.Initial investigation indicates welding activity was in progress in the building when sparks or slag ignited the insulation in the wall. Witnesses stated the fire quickly spread and the four individuals in the shop were unable to bring it under control. The building was a total loss. There were no injuries.The Ellinwood Fire Department brought the scene quickly under control and was assisted by fire crews from the Great Bend Fire Department.

The Great Bend Fire Department is in the process of redoing their
training facility at Fire Station #2 on west 10th Street. Fire Chief
Brent Smith said one of the larger changes is adding a second level to their
burn building, where staff can practice putting out different fire scenarios. Purchasing shipping containers, there will be moveable walls inside to change the layout.

"It was small enough that as soon as you went in the door, you could see in every room," said Smith. "It won't be hard, because staff will get to know the new layout too, but when you can move walls around, I think it will give them the opportunity to do some different things. I think they're excited about it."

Smith said the GBFD has been fully staffed for the past year. Division Chief
Rick Robison retired in February after serving in Great Bend for 35 years, and
the department received two applicants to fill his vacancy. 

With younger staff
onboard, Smith said the burn building is invaluable.


"We don't see fire today like I saw when I started, but it's a different kind of fire," said Smith. "We had stuff that burned, but the smoke was not as bad as what smoke is today. Things don't burn as easy as they used to but they're more toxic."

Smith noted there are college training courses for individuals interested in
becoming a firefighter, but the most important thing to do is obtain your
Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) certification.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

On Wednesday, March 13, at about 2:40 p.m., Barton County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a reported injury accident on US 56 Highway at the intersection of SW 80th Avenue. Initial reports indicated that a pickup truck had struck a truck tractor/semi trailer combination at that location.

Upon arrival, deputies located a 2024 Kenworth operated by Kelsey Jackson of Hutchinson. The trailer was loaded with agricultural chemicals. The second vehicle was a 2000 Nissan frontier operated by Randy Johnson of Pawnee Rock.

Investigation at the scene indicates the tractor trailer unit was westbound on US 56 and began to make a right-hand turn onto SW 80th Ave. when the Nissan struck the rear of the of the tractor trailer, turning over and sliding under the trailer. The Nissan was drug a short distance as the semi came to a stop.

Johnson was extracted from the vehicle by the Great Bend Fire Department. He was transported by ground ambulance to KU Med Center in Great Bend with non-life-threatening injuries. Jackson was not injured in the collision.

The accident is still under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office. We were assisted at the scene by the Great Bend fire and EMS and the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Driver extracted from vehicle in Barton Co. accident

The U.S. Department of Education is rolling out changes to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as part of the FAFSA Simplification Act for the 2024-25 academic year, and the Barton Community College financial aid office is trained and ready to help families through the transition of this vital piece of the enrollment process.

The Department of Education has provided status updates and resources to help train financial aid officers nationwide so officers were ready to assist students once the application became available this past December. Barton’s financial aid staff has participated in several trainings to ensure they are prepared to help students and process applications as quickly as possible.

Barton’s Director of Financial Aid Myrna Perkins said that even with preparation, financial aid offices nationwide have encountered some challenges as with any new program rollout. Still, she wants to let families know that the Barton financial aid staff is as prepared and trained as possible.

“While students can expect some delays in Barton receiving their FAFSA information, once it is in our hands, we will process it as quickly as possible,” she said. “We are continually participating in conversations and training to make sure we are ready to go when the time comes.”

Barton is also working alongside their student information software vendor, Ellucian, to learn and process the new data rules and fields. Once Barton receives student data, they will work with their vendor to adjust procedures in hopes of reaching full processing status quickly.&nbsp;

The FAFSA Simplification Act was enacted to help more students qualify for Pell Grants by switching to a new Student Aid Index formula. The new FAFSA will also directly receive federal tax data from the Internal Revenue Service for applicants when available, along with several other eligibility changes.&nbsp;

Barton Community College prepared to help with FAFSA frustrations

Hitschmann is a small unincorporated town in northeastern Barton County. Due to its isolated location it has been the scene of multiple burglaries and property crimes. 

In the early morning hours of March 13, 2024, while on active patrol, a deputy sheriff with the Barton County Sheriff's Office observed a 2003 Ford Crown Victoria parked on private property. The deputy came in contact with three individuals and after checking with the property owner it was found the subjects were trespassing. The deputy placed all three under arrest.

Arrested at the scene was Patrick Brady Shaw, age 25 of La Crosse; Amy Marie Shaw, age 26 of La Crosse and Chrystopher Joseph Staab, 26 of Hays. All three were transported to the Barton County jail without incident and booked into the Barton County Jail on requested charges of criminal trespass. 

All three have since posted a $1,000 bond and been released.

Law enforcement make trespassing arrests in small Barton Co. town

One new 12-passenger van equipped with a wheelchair lift is already transporting central Kansas residents to their destinations and another is on order.

The Ford Diamond is the newest addition to the General Public Transportation (GPT) fleet, which is available to all residents of Barton, Pawnee, Rice, Rush and Stafford counties.

Sunflower Diversified Services operates the GPT program in these counties, which represent its service territory. Sunflower serves children and adults with special needs.

“Our transportation service is available to anyone, not just individuals served by Sunflower,” emphasized Christina Jimenez, director of Transportation. “We encourage anyone who needs a ride to give us a call.

“We are eager to make life easier for our neighbors who need a lift to a doctor’s appointment, workplace, grocery store, community event or anywhere else you want to go,” she added. “The service truly is for the general public, just as the name of the program implies.”

Last year, GPT traveled 280,909 miles, which indicates “many people rely on us for this great service,” Jimenez commented. “But we can accommodate more.”

A passenger who needs a ride out of town should put in a request 24 hours in advance.

“If your destination is in Great Bend, you can call the same day even though it is better with the 24-hour notice,” Jimenez said. “This helps ensure that we are available when you need us.”

The first-come, first-served schedule is always based on availability.

Hours of operation are 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays; Saturday and Sunday hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. To make a reservation, call 620-792-7797.
