If baking is a work of the heart, then Charlene Patton and Sharon Davis have been the heartbeat of the Home Baking Association (HBA) for more than two decades. The pair were honored for their work to bring baking into the homes of families during the HBA’s recent annual meeting in Sunriver, Oregon, where the association also celebrated 100 years as an organization.&nbsp;

“It’s hard to imagine how many home bakers have been inspired or helped by Sharon Davis, Charlene Patton and the Home Baking Association,” said Cindy Falk, Kansas Wheat nutrition educator. “I’ve worked alongside these talented women since I joined Kansas Wheat in 1988, and we have shared our passion for baking with countless youth, educators and home bakers. Together we’ve provided baking demonstrations at the Kansas State Fair, test-baked and judged entries for the National Festival of Breads, promoted wheat products at national meetings, created baking videos and so much more. Thank you both for your years of dedication and vision.”&nbsp;

The HBA was started in 1923, originally as a group of soft wheat millers that produced self-rising flour and recognized they could make advancements better together. Today, the organization promotes increased home baking by providing tools and knowledge to perpetuate the love of baking by offering resources and curriculum to anyone who teaches or fosters baking skills. In 2023, the non-profit reached 8.7 million educators and consumers through the resources on its website and social media channels as well as virtual and hands-on workshops at state and national conferences.&nbsp;

“The HBA has a rich library of resources for anyone who is learning or teaching others to bake at school or home,” Falk said. “Staying true to the mission of sharing those resources with others for more than a century has instilled a love of baking in countless classrooms and homes — and Charlene Patton and Sharon Davis have been integral to that continued success.”&nbsp;

Davis joined the HBA in 1995 as a family and consumer science educator. Since then, she has made more than 500 presentations and written or co-written a substantial amount of printed and online teaching materials. Ranging from quick five-minute lessons to multi-week lesson plans, her lesson plans, PowerPoint presentations and videos have brought baking skills to homes, communities and classrooms from coast to coast.&nbsp;

“Sharon embodies the joy of baking,” Falk said. “She has a talent for making every presentation a celebration of everything that home baking is about — passing down baking skills from parents to children, creating memories and teaching useful life skills. It has been rewarding to watch her create memorable experiences while emphasizing the significant role baking plays in families.”&nbsp;

Patton started as the HBA executive director in 1997, leading the organization’s annual meetings, outside events, finances and other operations. She is also a regular presenter on home baking, appearing in-person, virtually, on video, in person and on television. Wheat Scoop: Baking with Heart - ﻿Celebrating 100 years

For those who would like to learn about preserving animals for study or display, the Kansas Wetlands Education Center is hosting a workshop in December. Participants aged 12-18 can learn and practice this art on Thursday, Dec. 28, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.Andrew Wittenberg, Ellinwood High School science teacher and local taxidermist, will help youth navigate the taxidermy process by creating a pheasant mount. This will be a tedious process; only those serious about learning should register.Ages 12-14 must register and attend with an adult who can assist with the process. Ages 15-18 can bring an adult to help if they choose.

Limited to 10 participants,&nbsp;registration by Dec. 8 is required for the workshop. The cost is $25 to cover supplies. Participants will need to bring their own pheasant and can contact the KWEC for tips on how to hold the pheasant over until the class. Efforts will be made by the KWEC crew to harvest a few additional birds. Those in the class should also bring their lunch for the day. Choosing and Caring for Your Christmas Tree&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; If selecting a cut tree, watch for these signs that the tree is too far gone.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; - Needles fail to ooze pitch when broken apart and squeezed

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; - Needles feel stiff and brittle

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; - Needles pull easily off tree

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Once you have your tree home, recut the trunk about one inch above the original cut. This will open up clogged, water-conducting tissues. Immediately place the trunk in warm water.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Locate the tree in as cool a spot as possible. Avoid areas near fireplaces, wood-burning stoves and heat ducts as the heat will result in excess water loss. Make sure the reservoir stays filled. If the reservoir loses enough water that the bottom of the trunk is exposed, the trunk will need to be recut. Adding aspirins, copper pennies, soda pop, sugar and bleach to the water reservoir have not been shown to prolong the life of a tree.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; If you choose a living Christmas tree, be sure to dig the planting hole before the ground freezes.&nbsp; Mulch the hole and backfill soil to keep them from freezing. Live trees should not be kept inside for more than three days. Longer periods may cause them to lose dormancy resulting in severe injury when planted outside. You may wish to tag the tree at the nursery and then pick it up a couple days before Christmas. After Christmas, move the tree to an unheated garage for several days to acclimatize it to outside temperatures. After planting, water well and leave some mulch in place to prevent the soil water from freezing and becoming unavailable for plant uptake.

BOOR: Choosing and caring for your Christmas tree

One Christmas tradition begins before Thanksgiving in Great Bend. The Annual Christmas Craft Mall opened for a 34th season on Nov. 18. Manager Shari Miller said the mall will remain open at the Central Baptist Church at 3301 Lakin Ave. in Great Bend until Dec. 23.

"We're open every day, seven days," she said. "Monday through Saturday, we are open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday we're open from 1-6 p.m."

This year's mall features handcrafted and baked goods from more than 45 vendors. The ever-popular fudges and jellies are back, as are homemade sweatshirts and candles. There are now apple cider bombs along with hot cocoa bombs. There are a variety of nuts, freeze-dried candy, bierocks, honey, ornaments, jewelry, seasonal decor, and more. Hoisington's B&amp;B Metal Works will again have art for sale, and Miller said gift baskets are a nice addition this year.

"If you haven't been in yet, you need to come in," she said. "We have a great mall this year. Lots of goodies."

Barton CC Trustees meeting agenda (11/28)

Golden Belt Community Foundation has been taking donations all November as part of Giving Tuesday. The campaign raised more than $339,000 for area non-profits in 2022, and more than $288,000 last year. Development and Communications Coordinator Mackenzie Mitchell said the foundation is gearing up for the big push for the official Giving Tuesday on Nov. 28.

"This year is our 10th year of Giving Tuesday," she said. "We've been saying let's make this year the perfect 10, just trying to grow our generosity and just show our communities how generous we are."

As an incentive to give on Nov. 28, GBCF will give selected online donors throughout the day an additional $100 to give to their charity of fund or choice. The first winner will be randomly selected from anyone who donates between the hours of 6-8 a.m. 

"Then there's a lunchtime, so 12-1 p.m., then end of the work day from 5-6 p.m., then a last minute from 10-11:59 p.m.," Mitchell said. "That's all online. A person will be drawn from that time frame, then they can get extra dollars from us and choose where they go."

Also available only on Nov. 28, several banks in Barton, Pawnee, Rush, and Stafford counties will take donation drop-offs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. 

This year, the Patterson Family Foundation is offering up to $70,000 in matching contributions - the largest match ever for Giving Tuesday. Any non-profit with an endowment with GBCF will have their donations proportionally matched.

Donations may be mailed to GBCF, 1307 Williams Street in Great Bend, dropped off at facility, or donate online at goldenbeltcg.org.

Golden Belt Community Foundation's Giving Tuesday is today

After approving some significant change orders to the Barton County Courthouse HVAC Renovation Project earlier this month, the county commission Tuesday reviewed two smaller change orders. Because the changes come in under the $50,000 threshold, the commission did not need to approve the changes. County Administrator Matt Patzner said the smaller of the two changes was the removal of the ceiling in the mechanical room.

"This allowed easier access to put in duct work and piping exactly the way they needed to in order for it to be as efficient as possible," he said. "That was $11,941.88."

That change order will not cost the county additional funds as it will be subtracted from the $20,000 contingency fund in the original contract. The other change came in Courtroom A on the third floor.

"As you know, Courtroom A is essentially a wooden box inside a bigger room, so we needed to change the way the duct work flowed to keep it up to code," Patzner said. "That was $12,797.95."

The ceiling inside the mechanical room will not be replaced to allow for easier access to infrastructure in the future. The commission approved change orders totaling $188,000 on the project earlier this month.

Noel Rodriguez has been playing or coaching soccer in Great Bend his
whole life. Rodriguez presented before the Great Bend City Council last week in
hopes of improving soccer playing conditions for the community. 

He noted when
friends played soccer at recess, they mostly had to play on dirt fields at
Riley Elementary School. Recently playing at Heizer Park, Rodriguez mentioned the
stickers that you have to deal with playing at the park south of town.


"I've heard stories from people coming to these meetings," said Rodriguez. "They've been told things. We're going to do this at this time. In my 28 years, there has not been much progress. I've told my story to see if maybe it helps to speed up the process. I would love for the kids growing up to have somewhere to go play and have a good time."

Rodriguez referenced playing in parking lots throughout town when it became
dark. A Great Bend High School graduate in 2012, Rodriguez served as a captain
for the Panthers his final two years. This summer, he was named the girls coach
at the high school after spending the last few years as a Great Bend Middle
School coach.

These plans look awesome, but I think trying to build something too spectacular that costs a lot is pushing the project behind. I think the soccer community is ready for something."

A goal to make improvements to Heizer Park was announced in 2020 by the City of
Great Bend, and a grant was received to assist in the project. Assistant City
Administrator Logan Burns said the city is still looking for matching funds at
Heizer. Also, the city is preparing construction bids for an estimated $2 million
project at Brit Spaugh Park that includes two mini soccer pitches.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

The workshop will focus on improving participants’ writing through collaboration with some of the editors of “Prairie Ink,” faculty and staff from Barton, and members of the community. Attendees are encouraged to bring whatever writing projects they’re working on or come prepared to help others.

Barton Community College to host writing workshop

SALINE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are working to positively identify the body of a man found in Saline County last week.&nbsp; It is believed to be&nbsp; 20-year-old Jessi J. Herbst from Lacrosse, according to Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan.

On Nov. 22, the Saline County Sheriff's Office reported to the 6000 block of State Street, where a passerby noticed a black Dodge pickup crashed in the trees near the road, according to Soldan.

The truck was traveling westbound on State Street when it left the roadway and crashed into the trees. "Turns out the vehicle had been in the trees for some time," Soldan said. "There was a body found out there."

Deputies found human remains near the wreck, and until now, dense foliage hid the scene from view. The truck belonged to&nbsp; Herbst who was last seen this summer.

"He was reported back in July as a missing person — possibly endangered, he was possibly suicidal," Soldan said. The individual was likely Herbst, but an autopsy report will confirm the identity.

In New York, Friday's settlement of $75.54 per barrel for light sweet crude was down a $1.56 on the day. That's a weekly loss of more than 30 cents despite gains of up to two dollars a barrel during the week. Current prices are ten dollars lower than a month ago. By lunchtime Monday, Nymex crude was trading below $75 a barrel. London Brent was below $81 a barrel at midday.

The government said U.S. crude inventories rose by nearly nine million barrels to just over 448 million barrels as of November 17. That's about one percent below the five-year average for this time of year, but the highest stockpile total since July.

EIA said domestic crude imports rose to six-and-a-half million barrels per day. The four-week average is up nearly two percent over the same four weeks a year ago.

U.S. crude production dipped slightly last week, but it was still among the best weeks ever at 13,214,000 barrels per day. The tally from the Energy Information Administration is 19,000 barrels per day lower than a week ago, and just over a million barrels per day higher than the same week a year ago. Output has exceeded 13.2 million barrels per day for each of the last seven weeks.

Monthly production reports in Kansas offer a mixed comparison to last year, which was the 2nd-worst, and in some counties the worst, on record. Statewide output in July was down from June. The one-month and cumulative tally are both down from last year. Records maintained by the Kansas Geological Survey show a continuing downward trend-line from the state's leading producer Ellis County. Last year's annual total in Ellis County was the worst ever. July output is up from June but down from a year ago.&nbsp;Last year's output in Barton County topped the previous two years, but had not yet reached pre-pandemic levels, according to KGS. Production in Barton County in July was down from June but up from July of last year. Russell County output through July was up from a year ago, but July production was down from a month earlier. Stafford County production was down from June and well below a year ago.

Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service reports 1,196 new wells spudded in Kansas so far this year, which is down more than 22% from a year ago. Total footage is down more than 25%. There are 18 new drilling permits on file. The year-to-date total of 1,189 new drilling locations lags last year by 22%. Operators completed 26 wells last week. That includes one in Ellis County out of 21 west of Wichita. Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service reports 1,551 completed wells so far this year, up by 98 wells from a year ago.

Rig Counts are up across the country and across the state. The Kansas Rig Count from Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service is up ten percent from a week ago, with 19 active drilling rigs in eastern Kansas, up two, and 24 west of Wichita, which is also up two. That count is up 10.3 percent from last week and 22% higher than a month ago, but 17.3% lower than the same week last year.

The weekly Rotary Rig Count from Baker Hughes shows 622 active rigs nationwide, up three gas rigs. The count in Louisiana was up two rigs. Texas was up one rig, while Colorado and New Mexico were each down one.

Operators in the number-three crude-producing state increased output by more than four percent in September. The North Dakota Department of Mineral Resources reported average output of 1.28 million barrels per day, up by more than 54,000 barrels per day from August. The state's operators also set new records for the second month in a row for both natural gas production and the gas-capture rate at oil wells.&nbsp;&nbsp;

News from the Oil Patch: Rising inventories fuel dropping prices

On Sunday, Nov. 26 at about 1 p.m., a deputy with the Barton County Sheriff’s Office stopped a vehicle in the 5300 block of 10th Street in Great Bend. The vehicle was stopped for a traffic infraction. 

During the course the investigation, Sheriff’s deputies discovered suspected marijuana, fentanyl, methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia in the vehicle.

The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, identified as Craig Brenden age 49 of Great Bend, was arrested at the scene and transported to the Barton County Jail without incident. 

At the detention facility further drugs were found on Brenden’s person. Brendan has been booked on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of fentanyl, possession of drug paraphernalia as well as trafficking contraband in a correctional institution. 

Brenden is being held in lieu of a $50,000 bond.

Ellinwood Hospital Foundation will be hosting it’s Christmas Gala this year on the evening of Saturday, December 9th. The Gala is an annual event and is the Foundation’s largest fundraiser for the Hospital &amp; Clinic. With construction currently underway on the new Hospital &amp; Clinic and an expected open date of August, 2024 all proceeds from this year’s gala will go towards furniture and equipment for the new facility.

Three small phrases can sum up how to improve health and improve quality of life:

The “three B’s” coined by Chelsea Reinburg, a fellow K-State Extension Agent, has a great point when she says, “I frame good health this way because it’s easy to remember, but sometimes doing all three is difficult. Doing all three is important and they all affect our health.”

The three B’s can provide a valuable road map for people who are looking to improve their health without complicating the process.

Most people have heard of the USDA MyPlate and know that it is a visual to show how breakfast, lunch, and dinner should be built.

“Half of your plate should be fruits or vegetables, a quarter should be grains – focusing on whole grains – and a quarter should be lean protein. Then, maybe a side of dairy, for those who consume dairy products,” Reinberg said.

Although it may seem difficult to build every meal based on the MyPlate method, it can play a big part in pursuing better health- whether that be weight loss or managing chronic illness such as high blood pressure or diabetes. There is also added benefit in diversifying our plate. Reinburg says, “As nutritionists, we say, ‘eat the rainbow,’ because each color has different nutrients, antioxidants, phytonutrients, vitamins and minerals.”

When exercise comes to mind, many people imagine going to the gym, doing intense cardio, or even running a marathon.

Instead, try framing your mindset around simple physical activities. This can be a steady 15-20 minute walk, or another activity that reduces sitting time and gets you away from the computer, tv, or phone screen.

“Being more physically active has some immediate benefits; for example, you may feel like your stress is reduced after a short walk. It reduces your blood pressure, at least temporarily,” Reinberg said.

Long-term benefits include a decreased risk of heart disease or diabetes; lower blood pressure; stronger bones and muscles; and better coordination and balance.

“Some studies have shown that no matter how healthy you are in terms of eating, if you sit for a majority of your day, you are still missing out on the health benefits that physical activity can provide.” Many aspects play a role in holistic well-being, and both nutrition and physical activity are major contributors.

Physical activity also plays a huge role in reducing stress, but colder weather can limit the opportunity to get outside and move. This is why it is especially important to acknowledge stress and to be self-aware of what triggers your stress.

The holiday season tends to increase stress. Family dynamics and finances are just a couple of examples that increase anxiety this time of year. Planning for these situations is important so you can be prepared to handle them. Reinburg advises, “Your plan of action should help to ensure that stress doesn’t get the best of you.”

It is extremely important to learn healthy coping strategies so you don’t continually struggle with anxiety. This is because chronic stress can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure. It also takes a toll on mental health and quality of life. To learn more about healthy coping mechanisms, the American Psychological Association website has some fantastic tools.

Regarding the three B’s, Reinberg said, “You don’t have to tackle all three at the same time.”

Maybe you start with building a better meal by making half your plate vegetables. Then, once you’ve conquered that goal, you can move on to boosting your physical activity or balancing your stress.

There is no perfect formula when it comes to healthy living. Whatever strategy works for you is the best method because you’ll be more likely to stick to it!
