Annual Mess & Muster coming up at Fort Larned

The
drought monitor report as of April 9 is showing conditions moving from no
dryness to abnormally dry for much of Southwest Kansas and we are still mostly
abnormally dry.&nbsp; Moderate drought is
expanding in the central part of the state.&nbsp;
The six to ten-day outlook (April 17 to 21) indicates leaning to
slightly below normal temperatures and a 33 to 40% chance of leaning to above normal
precipitation.&nbsp; The eight to fourteen-day
outlook (April 19 to 25) indicates near normal for temperatures and a continued
33 to 40% leaning above normal for precipitation.&nbsp; 

Last week’s column discussed the
possible negative effects of soil pH with low (acid) and high (alkaline) pH for
our common crops.&nbsp; Our crops, and
beneficial soil organisms prefer a soil pH of approximately 6.2 to 7.2, slight
acid to very slightly alkaline.&nbsp; Today,
what can be done to cope with soil pH when it’s out of that range.

Let’s deal with high pH, alkaline
soils first.&nbsp; Typically, as long as the
soil doesn’t have a high salt content and it’s under 8.5, we typically don’t
worry much.&nbsp; Occasionally at a pH of 8,
but typically higher, we may see crops such as soybeans exhibit an iron
deficiency, especially is parts of Southwest Kansas.&nbsp; You can try to apply iron as a foliar spray
but it can potentially damage the crop, isn’t cheap, and may or may not
work.&nbsp; The better suggestion is to plant
more tolerant crops.&nbsp; At high pH, there
are applications to lower pH such as elemental sulfur or even sulfuric
acid.&nbsp; However, these are extremely
expensive and impractical on a crop field basis.&nbsp; It may be practical for a small area such as
a flower bed for acid loving flowering plants or even with certain crops like
blueberries.&nbsp; A problem you should
correct is a combination of high soil pH with high salt content.&nbsp; Here the most practical option is calcium
sulfate, gypsum.&nbsp; The calcium can
displace the sodium and allow it leach with rainfall or irrigation below the
root zone.

Acid soils are more practical to
correct.&nbsp; Acid soils in our area are more
likely found on the sandy soils of our region, in South Central Kansas, and
especially Southeast Kansas.&nbsp; You may
find acid soils in North Central and Northeast Kansas but typically not to as
great an extent.&nbsp; 

There are several products to raise
soil pH but the most common and practical is calcitic limestone, Ag Lime.&nbsp; Dolomitic lime, which contains both calcium
and magnesium carbonate is also an option.&nbsp;
The amount you will need is a function of soil type, organic matter
content, and the actual pH.&nbsp; If a soil
test indicates acid soil conditions, a Lime Test Index, will tell you how much
you need.&nbsp; Heavier, higher clay content
soils, require more than lighter sandier soils but require liming less
often.&nbsp; Higher organic matter content
also increases the amount of lime needed.&nbsp;
There are other factors such as the purity and fineness of the material
that matter.&nbsp; The key is Ag lime is
crushed rock and take time to work.&nbsp; It
needs incorporation and moisture to raise soil pH.

Finally, if you can’t lime for
whatever reason, there are some cheats.&nbsp;
For wheat farmers, you can select an acid tolerant variety.&nbsp; And adding phosphorus in the row at planting can
help.

Perks, the Main Street coffee shop in Great Bend, has officially reopened under new management following a barista training program aimed at elevating the quality and consistency of its offerings.

Recognizing the importance of consistency in delivering a superior product, Perks enlisted the expertise of Brian Culver of Brew Grind Water, a coffee equipment service and barista training company based in Wichita. Brian brings years of experience and a passion for excellence to the table, making him the partner for Perks' journey towards coffee-making perfection.

Great Bend coffee shop prepared with barista training program

In 2022, Marley Palmer returned to her hometown of Larned to perform her nurse-practitioner clinicals at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital’s (PVCH) Family Medicine Clinic.

Today, she is the new addition to the full-time staff at the clinic where she is seeing patients of all ages.

“Larned is home to me,” Palmer said. “I wanted to come back and take care of my hometown people. I pride myself on caring for my patients as if they were my own family.”

Palmer’s family-medicine practice entails chronic-care management, women’s health, preventive healthcare and acute care.

“While I enjoy all these areas of family medicine, my specialty is well-child/pediatric care,” Palmer commented.

She noted that her previous experience at the PVCH Family Medicine Clinic played an instrumental role in her education.

“My clinicals here helped prepare me for the care and treatment of patients from birth on up,” she explained. “The experience also allowed me to become confident in my clinical decision-making, while treating a wide variety of health conditions.

“Family-practice clinicals allow you to use your knowledge and a variety of skills to provide the best treatment possible. I was fortunate to pursue my training with professionals at our Family Medicine Clinic.”

Palmer’s previous work experience includes progressive, acute and skilled care, along with pediatrics.

She earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing at Fort Hays State University in 2019. In May of last year, Palmer graduated from the FHSU Doctor of Nursing Practice Family Nurse Practitioner program.

After receiving her bachelor’s, Palmer worked as an RN at Kearney (Ne.) Regional Medical Center on the Progressive Unit for more than two years.

“Then I moved home to Larned and worked as an RN at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital and in the Family Medicine Clinic,” she recalled.

Palmer is board certified through the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.

During her leisure time, Palmer enjoys spending time with family and friends, going to the lake and concerts, reading “and just living life in a small town.”

Melanie Urban, administrator at PVCH, expressed her enthusiasm about Palmer joining the Pawnee Valley team.

“Family-medicine providers play a crucial role in delivering comprehensive healthcare to our community,” Urban said. “Marley’s pediatric experience and community passion make her a great addition to our team.”

Municipalities in Barton County encourage good-looking neighborhoods. When the Neighborhood Revitalization Plan expired in several Barton County cities, Barton County stepped in with its own plan. Appraiser Wendy Prosser explained how property owners can use the program to earn a tax rebate when they improve their property with a remodel or by building a new structure. 

"For residential properties, if you're doing a $10,000 investment and it ends up raising your assessed value by five percent, or on a commercial you put in a $20,000 investment and it raises your assessed value by 10 percent, we can give you a tax rebate," she said. "It is an incentive for you to not only revitalize maybe what you have and get a tax rebate after the taxes are paid, but also a way to encourage businesses to come in."

The goal of the Neighborhood Revitalization Plan is to stabilize neighborhoods by rehabilitating older homes, stimulate residential and business property development, give landlords incentives to offer quality and affordable housing to tenants, and boost construction-related jobs in the county. There are four target areas in the county.

"The first area is all of our rural, along with the east side of Great Bend," Prosser said. "Our second area is the west side of Great Bend. Our third area is all the city limits of Hoisington, and our fourth area is the city limits of Ellinwood."

There is a $20 application fee for the program, available at the Barton County Appraiser's Office or online, and the application should be completed and submitted prior to construction. The appraiser's office will determine if the project qualifies for the rebate, which would be issued upon the completion of payment of taxes the following year.

Neighborhood Revitalization Plan an incentive to build in Barton County

College debt forgiveness has been a hot topic in the United States for months. One Great Bend High School senior can skip that conversation. Kylee Mohr was one of a handful of recipients of the Rudd Scholarship that will pay for her entire four-year degree.

"One of the alumni for the Rudd Scholarship, who got it in 2020, came and talked to any student who was interested in knowing about the scholarship," Mohr said. "She gave us a rundown of what it was. She was telling us how it's not just about the money, it's about the family you get. I was really interested in that."

Mohr, who will major in business administration at Wichita State University, began the application process last October and worked for two months listing honors, awards, and extra-curricular activities, preparing two essays, and securing a letter of recommendation. In February, she was notified she was selected for the interview process. Then she was surprised with the big news.  

"They came to my school, but they had actually called my counselor," Mohr said. "She had me come and told me I had to work on something with her but I actually didn't. They were giving it to me. I was so surprised. I literally had no words."

Rudd Scholars have a 100-percent, 4-year graduation rate for retained students, and one in five scholars graduate in less than four years. Seven in 10 recipients are first-generation college students. Scholars from sixty-four of the 105 Kansas counties have received a Rudd Scholarship.

Great Bend's Mohr receives Rudd Scholarship

The Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) announced this week that 92 Kansas high school seniors have earned the recognition as 2024 Kansas Career and Technical Education (CTE) Scholars.

Ellsworth student recognized as Career and Technical Ed. Scholar

MARYVILLE, Mo. – Northwest Missouri State University Director of Athletics Andy Peterson has selected Matt Keeley as the 21st head men's basketball coach in program history.&nbsp;

Bearcat Athletics will schedule a press conference in the near future to formally announce Keeley as the new head coach.

"I'm very confident in bringing Coach Keeley on board to lead our men's basketball program," Peterson said in a news release from Northwest. "I've known him for a long time having scrimmaged, coached, and recruited against him over the years and know who he is as a person and a competitor."

"He will be an asset to our program, our department, our institution and our community. I can't wait to get started working with him in this next evolution of Bearcat men's basketball."

Keeley, a native of Great Bend, Kan., has served as a head coach at Ottawa University Arizona for the past seven seasons. He has posted a head coaching mark of 113-89. He was named the 2023 NCCAA National Coach of the Year.

He guided the Spirit to three consecutive national tournament appearances including a national runner-up finish in 2021 and a spot in the 2023 Fab Four. Keeley secured back-to-back GSAC tournament championships during his time in Surprise, Ariz.

"I am so excited and equally honored to join the Northwest Missouri State program as the next men's basketball coach," Keeley said. "Being on campus you quickly realize that Northwest is a truly special place whose biggest asset is its amazing people. My family and I can't wait to work alongside all the Bearcat family in the local community and beyond to continue the program's success."

Before embarking on creating a new program in Arizona, Keeley was an assistant coach at MidAmerica Nazarene University from 2009-17 under head coach Rocky Lamar. Keeley was also a graduate assistant coach at MNU in the 2004-05 season.

Keeley is no stranger to the MIAA as he spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Washburn University for head coach Bob Chipman in 2007-08 and 2008-09.

Great Bend native named head coach at Northwest Missouri State

MCPHERSON COUNTY –&nbsp;The Rush County Sheriff’s Office reported that Marilyn Jo Spangenburg, 79, was located in McPherson County, Kansas. She is now safe.

&nbsp;The statewide silver alert is now canceled.

RUSH COUNTY –&nbsp;The Rush County Sheriff’s Office requested the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) issue a statewide Silver Alert for a woman who was last seen in Rush County, Kansas, according to a media release from the KBI.

The whereabouts of 79-year-old Marilyn Jo Spangenburg, of Hutchison, are unknown and the public’s assistance is requested to help locate her.

Spangenburg was last seen at a residence in Bison, Kansas in Rush County, on Saturday, April 13 around 4 p.m. She was driving a 2008 silver Toyota Camry bearing Kansas disabled plate 54971. A family member’s vehicle was running, and Spangenburg drove away without the key fob in the vehicle, so it will not start again once it stops. Her direction of travel is unknown, however, she may attempt to travel to Great Bend or Hutchison.

Spangenburg is a white female who is 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighs 217 pounds. She has grey hair and blue eyes. She has schizophrenia and dementia.

The Barton Music Department will present a choral concert, which will also include special performances by the Barton Jazz Band at 7:30 p.m. April 18 in the Fine Arts Auditorium. Admission is free.

Director of Choral Activities Dr. Eric Foley said the concert will include all Barton vocal ensembles.&nbsp;

“Groups will perform music from Kansas-based lyricist Charles Anthony Silvestri and his collaborations with several different contemporary choral composers,” he said. “In addition, Hilltop Singers will bring a new flavor of vocal jazz music to this concert, with a number of selections featuring vocal improvisation solos. The Jazz Band will also be a part of this concert, highlighting their work in the genre and adding vocals for a portion of their set as well. There will be something for everyone to come and enjoy.”

Doctors on Call, a local production of Smoky Hills PBS, will feature Dr. Perez-Tamayo with the Central Care Cancer Center. This episode will air Tuesday, April 16 at 7 p.m. and will focus on prostate / breast cancer.

Doctors on Call is a program that provides medical information on a variety of different topics. Medical professionals from throughout the state travel to Bunker Hill to provide information and answer questions from the viewing audience. The doctors presenting each week have expertise in the topic chosen for that program. Questions can be called in during the show or emailed prior to the broadcast.

Prostate and breast cancer is next topic on Doctors on Call

PAWNEE COUNTY—A Great Bend man arrested after a police chase in Pawnee County made his first court appearance Friday.

&nbsp;Joshua R. Castaneda, 37 of Great Bend, was charged with Possession of 264 Grams of Cocaine with Intent to Distribute; Felony Fleeing and Elude - Reckless Driving;&nbsp; Felony Fleeing and Elude – Resulting in an Accident; Interference with Law Enforcement – Resisting Arrest for a Felony; Criminal Damage to Property of at least $1,000, but less than $25,000; and Driving under the Influence of Drugs, according to Pawnee County Attorney Doug McNett..

Castaneda was arrested by the Pawnee County Sheriff’s Department on the night of April 9, following a chase which ended on the property of a local feed yard. The chase began after a routine traffic stop. The suspect abandoned his vehicle after crashing into the back of a patrol vehicle but was quickly apprehended. One deputy involved in the accident was admitted to an area hospital for observation but was later released.

Castaneda is scheduled for a Preliminary Hearing on April 25, 2024. He remains in custody with bond set at $90,000, according to McNett.

The Kansas Music Hall of Fame&nbsp;(KSMHOF) 2024 inductees will be honored at a ceremony and concert at Liberty Hall, 644 Massachusetts Street, in Lawrence, KS on Saturday, April 20.&nbsp;The 2024 KSMHOF Class Inductees include:&nbsp;Karrin&nbsp;Allyson, Ric Averill, Angela Hagenbach, Son Venezuela, The Scamps, Rick Faris, Philip Anschutz, Anthony Jermaine White (aka J. White Did It), and The Cotillion Ballroom (Ad Astra Award Recipient).

Karrin&nbsp;Allyson&nbsp;is a Grammy-nominated American jazz vocalist,&nbsp;originally from Great Bend.&nbsp;In 1990, she moved to Kansas City where her jazz career took off. Of the 12 studio albums she recorded for the Concord Jazz label in Kansas City, five have received Grammy nominations for Best Jazz Vocal Album, including "Ballads: Remembering John Coltrane."

Ric Averill&nbsp;is the Emeritus Artistic Director of Performing Arts at the Lawrence Arts Center. Averill is a director, playwright, screenwriter, composer, director, conductor, actor and educator. Averill composed a youth opera based on "The Emperor’s New Clothes" for The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC.&nbsp;In addition to composing children’s songs, operas and ballets, Ric is often found as a professional performer and/or music director.&nbsp;

Angela Hagenbach&nbsp;is a Grammy-nominated jazz singer/songwriter from Kansas City and has been a staple in the Kansas City scene for nearly three decades. A former trombonist, Hagenbach was twice chosen to represent the United States as a Jazz Ambassador to the world under the auspices of the United States Information Agency and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Son Venezuela&nbsp;is a Lawrence-based Latin band who have performed in the Latin scene for 30 years. Son Venezuela's induction is historic as it marks the first induction of a Latin artist or group into the KSMHoF.

Originally from Parsons, R&amp;B vocal group&nbsp;The Scamps (aka The Five Scamps)&nbsp;were a fixture in Kansas City nightclubs in the 1940's &amp; 50's, eventually signing with Columbia Records. The Scamps live performance spanned six decades, and were rewarded in 2002 by Kansas City officials who renamed a section of 8th Street as "Scamps Alley" in their honor.&nbsp;

Rick Faris&nbsp;is a Grammy-nominated Bluegrass artist, songwriter and musician from Topeka. After spending 11 years with the acoustic bluegrass group Special Consensus, Faris has enjoyed success as a solo artist, with multiple nominations from the International Bluegrass Music Association, including winning the "Best New Artist" award in 2022. Faris is also an in-demand luthier, specializing in building handmade guitars since 2000 with Rick Faris Guitar Co.

Philip Anschutz&nbsp;(Bob Hapgood Award Recipient)&nbsp;is a businessman and philanthropist from Russell, and is the founder and owner of AEG Live (Anschutz Entertainment Group), one of the largest presenters of live music and entertainments in the U.S., owning California music and arts festival Coachella.&nbsp;

Jermaine White (aka "J. White Did It") (Bill Lee Award Recipient)&nbsp;is Grammy Award-winning producer from Leavenworth, responsible for two Diamond-selling singles (Cardi B's "Bodak Yellow" and "I Like It"). White has produced songs for artists Megan Thee Stallion, Latto, Gucci Mane and 21 Savage, whose song "a lot" (along with Megan's "Savage" remix with Beyonce') earned him a Grammy win for Best Rap Song.
