Advancing Barton County Childcare, established by Great Bend Economic Development, has taken on the task of securing funding and constructing a state-of-the-art group daycare center in Great Bend.

Spring is my favorite time of year. The weather warms up, and I migrate outdoors to enjoy the weather. I love walking, biking, or simply sitting on my porch to soak up the sunshine. There’s something about sunshine that lifts my mood, and I don’t think I am the only one who feels this way. Science shows that rays from the sun have a positive effect on most of us. It provides a mental boost, and it supplies Vitamin D.

Vitamin D is a useful resource throughout the entire body. It plays a role in calcium absorption for strong bones, helps keep the immune system functioning properly, improves insulin sensitivity, and is linked to a reduced risk of cognitive decline. Vitamin D can also play an important role in cancer risk, cardiovascular disease, and mental health.

While we know the vitamin has fantastic effects on health, over 40% of Americans are deficient in the essential vitamin, and most of us aren’t getting the recommended intake. Children and adults should get 600 IU per day while those over 70 should aim for 800 IU.

Although many of us lack the essential vitamin, there are several different ways to increase intake. Direct sunlight, diet, and supplements can all help.

Sunlight exposure is the most potent source of Vitamin D. In fact, about 30 minutes of direct sunlight twice a week is equivalent to taking 20,000 IU of the vitamin orally! Experts recommend getting outdoors anytime from 10 am- 4 pm to get the full benefit.

Food can also provide Vitamin D in smaller amounts. Natural sources include trout, salmon, eggs, liver, and mushrooms. Other foods are fortified with the vitamin, and these can include cereal, milk, and juice.

Dietary supplements can also help you reach your Vitamin D needs. These supplements contain high levels of the vitamin, and they have been shown to cure Vitamin D-related diseases such as Rickets. Although a supplement may be convenient, it is always a good idea to consult your doctor first.

Like many of nature’s gifts, Vitamin D is generous in many ways. As you know, the vitamin is necessary for good physical health, and it is promising for mental health. Studies show that people with anxiety and depression are likely to have low vitamin D levels.

While we don’t know if depression is caused directly by low Vitamin D levels, we do know that getting outside to soak up sunshine can promote physical activity and provide opportunities to socialize. Along with these mood boosters, a colorful, Vitamin D-rich diet can support mental health as well.

Vitamin D is a nutrient that influences a vast number of the body’s health responses, and it is critical for good health. Getting enough Vitamin D can be a simple way to take care of your body and mind. So, what can you do to protect your health and avoid Vitamin D deficiency?

WINKEL: The sunshine vitamin

For an 11th straight year, the Kansas Collegiate Athletics Conference (KCAC) selected Great Bend as the host for its baseball and softball championships. Kansas being Kansas, there are already some weather-related delays. KCAC Assistant Commissioner Hans Nickel said baseball will start a day later than anticipated.

"Unfortunately, baseball is not getting teed off today with the weather," he said. "Softball is a little bit different type of game. Pitching won't burn out as quickly -with baseball if you have stops and starts. We're going to try to get some softball in with the weather but baseball we'll start tomorrow."

Softball action begins today with a pair of games at noon at the Great Bend Sports Complex. The final two games of the evening are scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. Thursday's baseball action is now scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. with Oklahoma Wesleyan taking on Friends. Nickel is pleased to again be working with Great Bend Recreation Commission and Christina Hayes at the Convention and Visitors Bureau.

"It's just really fun every time we get to come out to Great Bend, the community buy-in, the work of Christina at the CVB," he said. "Great Bend's just been a phenomenal host and we really enjoy coming out to Great Bend."

Barton Community College and Larned State Correctional Facility (LSCF) honored the achievements of LSCF residents at their annual learning celebration on April 10.

Graduates were awarded their associate degree, high school diploma, or workforce training certificates in welding technology, occupational safety and health (OSHA), and business management and leadership. A total of 104 certificates, industry certifications, and diplomas were awarded this year.

Barton’s Coordinator of Correctional Education Services Nicole Barr said Barton has provided training and educational services at LSCF since 2001 as part of its Building Academic Skills in Correctional Settings (BASICS) program. More than 75 students are served annually through the program.

“One important thing to remember about why we are so passionate about our correctional education programs at Barton is that most residents are going to be released at some point and will be living and working alongside us all,” she said.&nbsp; “So, we want to do everything we can to give them tools to ensure they can thrive and live happy and productive lives as well as enrich the lives of their friends, families, and people in their respective communities as best as they can.”

Larned State Correctional & BCC hold learning celebration

In March, the Barton County Commission approved a bid of nearly $50,000 for Tulsa-based Armstrong Moving Company to move county operations back into the courthouse following the HVAC Renovation Project. That time is now just two weeks away. County Administrator Matt Patzner said the courthouse should be operational by Monday, May 20.

"We wanted to give ourselves a little bit of grace at the end just in case anything unforeseeable comes up," he said. "We're going to start the move May 13 and it should wrap up May 18."

The county clerk, district court, and register of deeds offices must remain open, so half of those offices will be moved on May 13 with the remainder moved on May 15. That Tuesday is allocated to first-floor offices at the courthouse, including the treasurer's office and administrative offices. Thursday will be a full day of moving the county attorney's office back into the courthouse. Friday is reserved for the remaining second-floor offices, and Saturday will be used for any leftover projects.

"It's going to be that much sweeter just because of all the effort that everybody's put in," Patzner said. "It's amazing. When we started this, it seemed like a monumental task. Getting in there before June 1, operational, and we'll see after we sell the tax credits, but there's a good chance this project will be on time and at budget or under budget."

 Doing front-end work like labeling office supplies will help in round two of the move, and county employees will be asked to transport their own valuables. Barton County had leased three properties for temporary county operations, and Patzner expects those leases to end after the year-long contract with no extension needed.

Mental Health Awareness Day in Great Bend

Barton County Conservation District, in partnership with the National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD), is celebrating the 69th Annual Stewardship Week from April 28 – May 5, 2024. This year’s Stewardship Week theme is “May the Forest Be with You, Always.”

BCCD, led by Veronica Coons, District Manager, is a member of NACD, which oversees the annual Stewardship Week program, one of the largest national annual programs that promotes conservation. &nbsp;

“Soil and water conservation are intimately intertwined with forest health,” said NACD President Kim LaFleur. “This year’s Stewardship Week recognizes the importance forests serve in the protection of soil and water resources, preventing erosion, purifying contaminants, and nurturing healthy watersheds.” &nbsp;

The BCCD was formed in an effort to assist the people of Barton County with implementing conservation programs and promoting efforts that protect and improve natural resources.

During Stewardship Week, BCCD will provide support to community gardeners at the Victory Garden of Barton County, and share conservation resources with area schools.

BCCD is a vital resource to those interested in expanding awareness about the importance of water as a resource for our communities and ecosystems. We rely on water for drinking cleaning, swimming, growing our food, and so much more. People, animals, and plants all need healthy watersheds to survive. &nbsp;

Barton County Conservation promotes Stewardship Week

Area seniors will be graduating from high school in a few short weeks. Many will go to college and some will begin new careers. At Lincoln Elementary School in Great Bend, those decisions are being shaped early on. During last Thursday's USD 428 Board of Education luncheon at the school, Student and Family Advocate Jose Arias told the board about a career development program for sixth graders. 

"It's never too late or early to starting thinking, what do I do after high school?" he said. "A lot of times, they get to high school and they're still thinking, do I want to go to college? Do I want to go to vo-tech? Do I want to go to work full-time? What is it that I want to do?"

The students answer questions and research various career options, including what type of training and qualifications are required, salary ranges, and the workload involved. Mesa Temple is headed down the path of becoming a horse trainer. Levi Williams plans to be a computer engineer. Brecklynn Carper said she can be a labor and delivery nurse while later pursuing a bachelor's degree.

"What is the work environment like?," Carper said. "Depending on the day, you can have one to two patients. What city would you like to live with your career choice? I chose Wichita, Kansas, and I thought it might be important to learn the amount I would need to pay for an apartment. It's typically $1,000-$2,000 per month."

The sixth graders will eventually compile their information to poster board, which will be displayed during a student-led career fair hosted by the school.

Lincoln sixth graders in Great Bend already planning for the future

Statewide crude production bottomed out last year. The Kansas Geological Survey reports total Kansas output last year of 27.7 million barrels or 75,805 barrels per day. That's down more than 1,200 barrels a day from the year before to the lowest annual tally on record. Kansas output has been in a steady decline since the high point in 2014, when operators pumped more than 135,000 barrels a day or nearly double current output.

* Most county totals were also lower. Output in Ellis County leads the state rankings but drops by 110 barrels a day from a year earlier to 5,881 barrels per day. * At number two, Haskell County dropped by more than two hundred barrels to just over 4,500 per day. * Barton County showed an increase of nearly a thousand barrels to 4,080 barrels per day. Finney County pumped 3,800 barrels per day, an increase of 130 daily barrels. * Rooks County was number five with 3,600 barrels a day, up 41 barrels. * Russell County drops to number six in the county rankings, with average daily output of 3,594 barrels a day. * Stafford County production ranks eighth, dropping by nearly 100 barrels a day to just under 2,500 barrels per day.

Regulators approved 27 new drilling locations across the state last week, with 11 in Western Kansas including one new drilling permit in Russell County. That's 283 new permits this year, compared to 416 by this time last year.

Operators completed 24 wells in Kansas last week. Independent Oil and Gas Service reports 18 new completions east of Wichita and six in the western half of the state. That's 378 wells so far this year, compared to nearly 600 a year ago.

The Kansas Rig Count from Independent Oil and Gas Service drops by two rigs in eastern Kansas to 12 active rigs. West of Wichita, there are 18 active rigs, which is up one from last week.&nbsp; The count is down six percent from last week and down nine percent from last year at this time. Drilling was underway on Friday on leases in Barton and Stafford counties.

Friday's Rotary Rig Count from Baker Hughes drops to 613 rigs, a decline of five oil rigs and one seeking natural gas. The tally in Louisiana was down four rigs. New Mexico was down one rig while Texas was up one.

Stockpiles are dropping, except in the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. The Energy Information Administration reports commercial crude inventories dropping 6.4 million barrels to just under 454 million as of April 19. Stockpiles are about three percent below the five-year average for this time of year. Government data reflect an increase in strategic inventories for the second week in a row. EIA's weekly Petroleum Balance Sheet shows an increase of 800,000 barrels in the SPR, marking a total increase of 1.4 million barrels in the last two weeks. EIA canceled previous efforts to buy about three million barrels when market prices failed to meet the government's target $79 a barrel. Prices have been over $80 for more than a month. The reserve remains a little over half full, at more than 365 million barrels. The US stored more than 600,000 barrels before Russia's invasion of Ukraine prompted the government to sell off strategic stockpiles to tame prices.

EIA notes US crude production increased slightly from a week ago. Alaska adds six thousand barrels per day while the lower-48 states held steady for a nationwide average of 13,137,000 barrels per day.

The US is a net petroleum exporter, but we import more crude oil than we ship out by 1.3 million barrels a day. Domestic crude-oil imports last week rose 36-thousand barrels a day for an average just shy of 6.5 million barrels a day, outpacing crude exports by 1.4 million barrels a day. The Energy Information Administration says petroleum product imports were also up slightly, driving total petroleum imports up to nearly 8.5 million barrels a day. Total petroleum exports topped 12 million barrels a day last week.

Slack demand drops gasoline prices, across the country and here at home. Pump prices are down despite dwindling national gasoline and diesel inventories. The auto club Triple-A says motor fuel demand typically slows in the run-up to Memorial Day and the traditional summer driving season. Gasoline prices have dropped two cents from last week. Diesel prices nationwide are three cents lower than a week ago. The EIA reports diesel consumption this year is lower than usual, due largely to warmer winter weather and reduced manufacturing activity, but also to the substitution of biofuels on the West Coast.&nbsp;&nbsp;

USD 428 personnel report: Lueders approved as new coach at GBHS

Details emerged late Friday indicating a possible active-shooter situation at The Center for Counseling and Consultation in Great Bend was a false report. Law enforcement, however, did not know that as they responded to the situation. Tuesday morning, Barton County Commissioner Shawn Hutchinson, who owns Central Plains Security &amp; Satellite Pros, commended officers for their response.

"I just wanted to give a huge shout out to our law enforcement: Barton County Sheriff's Office and Great Bend Police Department," he said. "I believe there were a few highway patrolmen there as well. Amazing job. I had the task of reviewing the cameras since we installed the camera system at the facility. There was no delay. When these guys showed up, they decided they were going to breach the door, then they were going in. They weren't waiting on SWAT, they weren't waiting on keys. These are some very brave men and women and they deserve our respect and admiration."

The incident, which caused a lockdown at nearby Lincoln Elementary School began just after 3 p.m. The school, which was scheduled to release for the day, was locked down from 3:25 p.m. to 4:10 p.m. when given an "all clear" by law enforcement. Hutchinson praised the officers for their work, including Great Bend Chief of Police Steve Haulmark and Barton County Sheriff Brian Bellendir.

"I saw the video and I'm very impressed," Hutchinson said. "These are some consummate professionals. Our chief of police in Great Bend and our sheriff were some of the first people through that door. Huge shoot out to our Barton County Sheriff's Office and Great Bend Police Department."

Staff at The Center for Counseling &amp; Consultation were also in a lockdown during the incident. An individual had entered the facility with something on his belt that was mistaken for a gun.

Summer is just around the corner and schools are rolling into their last couple of weeks!

The Cottonwood Extension District was able to take advantage of a state-wide grant program through Kansas 4-H and the Kansas Department of Education. We have four young people joining our team this summer who will be providing focused educational opportunities through several partners.

In addition to a financial literacy curriculum that will be a part of the Ellinwood Library program, youth in several of our communities will have the opportunity to participate in ag-related STEM activities, leadership lessons, and much more.

Joining our team in Barton County will be 4-H alums, Jayla Wyant and Camille Dolechek. Joining the team in Ellis County are Rhyann Brown and Leah Mages. We are excited to see their interaction with youth across our district!

Some activities and programs will be coordinated through partners such as GPS Kids Club and several area libraries; others will be open to all youth in the community. Keep an eye on our Cottonwood Extension District Facebook page for events and activities which will be open to all youth!

During both county fairs, the Summer Engagement interns will have some activities set up for youth to experience which is just one more reason to check out the events and activities of the fair!

While summer sports keep many families busy, be sure to check on the free or low-cost opportunities available through your Rec Center or library! Did someone in your family get a bike? Or maybe it’s time to air up the tires in an old one and enjoy a family bike ride. Find a new walking path and explore that as a family for exercise, fresh air, and memories!

Thousands of people visit the Great Bend Sports Complex each year, and
consistent weekend baseball and softball tournaments throughout the summer are
underway. In between games, patrons are often looking for places to eat, shop
and kill some time. 

Great Bend Assistant City Administrator Logan Burns said
advertising options are still available at the ballfields.


"We have several different options whether you choose Field 1, Field 2 or both fields," said Burns. "We have a couple of entrance options as well. If someone is interested, they can contact City Hall."

Between field one and field two, Great Bend has approximately 12 sponsors
currently on display at the complex. Field 1, the baseball field, started with
4' x 8' displays along the outfield fence. To improve the visibility,
the city changed the banners’ dimensions to 6' x 12'.


"Once they fill that application out, we would then ask for them to send us their logo," said Burns. "We send that out to Mark's Custom Signs and they'll take care of us and put up the banner."

Severe weather season is upon Central Kansas and the Midwest. That was evidenced over the weekend with dozens of tornadoes reported from Texas to Nebraska and Iowa Friday and Saturday. Barton County Communications Director Dena Popp said area agencies continue finding new ways to deliver storm information to the public.

"We now have a 911 Facebook page," she said. "It's <a href="https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100091423351139">Barton County Communications/911</a>. The Barton County Emergency Manager has a Facebook page now, and he posts all of his updates. That is <a href="https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61554997943359">Barton County Emergency Management</a> on Facebook. Then the county page at <a href="https://www.facebook.com/BartonCountyKS">Barton County KS</a>, we try to post to all three of those whenever we get weather warnings."

Popp also reminds the public that tornado sirens around the county are tested each Tuesday at noon unless there is inclement weather. The sirens are not owned by the county, but any malfunctions during a test may be reported to Barton County Communications. In the event of a real storm, dispatchers can sound sirens in an individual community or for the entire county.

"We don't want to cry wolf to everybody if it's not going to affect them, but we do try to warn the public to the best of our ability," Popp said.

Barton County Communications is typically staffed with two dispatchers. In the event of severe weather, more dispatchers are brought in. Still, violent storms create chaos in the 911 center, and Popp said calls to 911 should be reserved for emergencies.

"If you have a medical emergency, if you have lines sparking, please call us, but we want to reserve our phone lines as much as possible for those true emergencies, not just a power outage," said Popp. "We don't have any way to know when the power is going to be back on."

Various electric utilities, including Wheatland Electric, have an <a href="https://weci.net/view-or-report-outage">outage map</a> on their website that may be utilized to check outages and updates during a storm.

Barton County dispatchers gearing up for severe weather season

In November 2022, the USD 428 Board of Education approved the replacement of the track and turf at Great Bend High School's Memorial Stadium. The track has been largely closed to the public for exercise purposes since construction began last May. With all the pieces now in place and seasonal weather on the horizon, GBHS Activities Director Matt Westerhaus said the track will again be open for walking and jogging purposes in the next 7-10 days.

"Where we're at is trying to make sure we have some signage and verbiage in place, and a gate allocated that allows for walking and jogging on the track," he said.

Public access will be limited to walking and jogging on the track between dawn and dusk. Any other use of the facilities, including the turf football field or practice field, requires written permission from the district. As for rules on the track, Westerhaus said to follow the general rule of keeping the facility at least as clean as you found it.  

"Obviously, we're going to ask that there be no skateboards, bicycles, rollerblades, scooters, or similar devices on the track," he said. "No pets allowed. Help us maintain a clean and safe facility by disposing of trash and reporting any concerns to district officials."

In the past, access to the track was available through multiple gates around the facility. Information will be shared by USD 428 once the exact location of an entrance gate is selected. District official asks that anyone utilizing the track for walking or jogging use the outside lanes 3-8.

May is National Bike Safety Month, Spring and Summer increases the number of children and adults out on the roadways riding bikes for fun and exercise. The Pilot Club of Great Bend also known as the&nbsp;Helmet People,&nbsp;want to raise awareness, and remind riders and drivers of the need for greater caution and awareness on the roadways and streets. Pilot club encourages everyone to always wear a helmet when riding and certainly to make sure children wear helmets. &nbsp;Once again this May the Pilot club will participate in the Perfect Attendance Bike Program by properly fitting and giving away bike helmets to the USD 428 students who have perfect attendance and earned a new bike from generous local community sponsors and donations.

People travel by bicycle to work, to school, for social and family trips, and for recreation, among other reasons. The growth in use of bicycles, and electric bicycles&nbsp;in particular during the COVID-19 pandemic has led to increases in bicycling, and has resulted in expanded ranges of trip purposes, abilities, and experience of people riding bicycles on public roadways.

As reported by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), bicyclists,&nbsp;like motorcyclists, are not safeguarded by occupant protection measures found in passenger vehicles and face comparatively high exposure to injury risks in crashes on the roadway.&nbsp; Bicyclist injuries remain consistently and disproportionately high. In 2021 an additional estimated 41,615 bicyclists were injured. Over the last 5 years, estimated injury-only crashes averaged about 45,400 yearly.

In the absence of separate bike lanes, trails, or paths, bicyclists may be required to operate foot or low-powered electric bicycles on the roadway with vehicles. Bicyclists are also more susceptible to outdoor elements such as weather and road surface conditions.&nbsp;&nbsp; Rising bicyclist and pedestrian fatalities have prompted urgent calls from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) in recent years. The number of bicyclists killed in traffic crashes has been steadily trending upwards since 2010. From 2010 to 2021, bicyclist fatalities ranged from 623 to a high of 966 with a yearly average of 800 (NCSA, 2022; Stewart, 2023). There were during the 5-year period between (2017 to 2021), a yearly average of 883 people on bicycles killed in police reported traffic. Bicyclists accounted for 2.2% of total traffic fatalities in 2021.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Ride defensively at all times, use appropriate hand signals when turning.&nbsp; Think Safety: Your fault or not, you lose.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Bicyclists can take precautions, be visible. Plan to be seen; wear equipment to protect yourself that make you more visible to others – wear a properly fit bike helmet, bright clothing, and reflective gear. Use lights at night: Kansas law requires a front head lamp with white light visible from 500 feet and a rear red reflector visible from 600 feet when riding after dusk.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Last but not least, make sure that you perform periodic bicycle maintenance on the families' bikes.&nbsp; Checking tire pressure and condition, checking brakes, lights and reflectors, lubricating key places is also recommended.The Pilot Club&nbsp;Helmet People&nbsp;hope you will celebrate National Bike Safety Month by getting out and having fun riding as much as you can safely!
