Twenty-three-year-old active-duty soldier and Barton Community College at Fort Riley Barton student Niko Coldren graduated last Thursday at a ceremony in Manhattan alongside 53 of his peers and is ready to take the next step in his educational journey on his way to becoming a software engineer.

&nbsp;“Technology will only continue to become more integrated into our daily lives,” he said. “Being able to help create and build products that can help people is a great opportunity. I want to build important programs that can help improve people’s lives.”

&nbsp;Coldren credits his academic success to Barton’s ability to accommodate his life as a soldier while providing a fully supported staff that helped with everything from financial aid to advising.

&nbsp;“Barton is located on post, so it was very convenient for me as a barracks soldier to do schoolwork and meet with my counselor all while staying on post,” he said. “Barton’s classes transfer very well to other universities so I knew upon completion I would not have to retake classes.”

Barton has been educating on Fort Riley since 1989, so the staff has a very astute understanding of how the military functions, which helps guide students through complex scheduling and relocation. In addition, Barton’s LSEC program allows soldiers, their dependents, and any Department of Defense employees to earn an associate degree at no cost.

&nbsp;“While my active duty schedule was hectic and changed frequently, the professors at Barton helped me and were very understanding of my changing schedule,” he said. “Mrs. Harper, my academic advisor, was unbelievably helpful. She helped me plan my classes around deployment and two NTC rotations. Ultimately, my success in school was from my hard work and the support of the professors and faculty at Barton.”

&nbsp;Coldren plans to transfer to Kansas State University to obtain his computer science degree.

“Barton is very military friendly, and I recommend all soldiers to stop by and hear about classes,” he said. “I would also like to thank everyone at Barton for all their help in my success,” he said. “Especially Mrs. Harper, who went above and beyond to assist me and helped me take the right classes at the right time to help maintain a healthy work-life balance.&nbsp;Going to school as an active-duty soldier is difficult, but when you have a team behind you helping you succeed, it makes all the difference.”

Coldren was one of 53 students who chose to walk as part of the larger celebration Thursday afternoon. Ninety-three students completed associate in arts, associate in science, associate in general studies, and associate in applied science degrees at the Fort Riley campus in 2023-24. Active-duty Barton student eyes career as software engineer

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) have issued a public health advisory due to blue-green algae.

A harmful algal bloom (HAB) may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. Blooms can develop rapidly; if the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep pets away. These toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and even skin contact. Symptoms vary depending upon the type of exposure (e.g. direct contact, ingestion, inhalation) but can include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, and headache. The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2002 Ford F250 driven by&nbsp; Ryan Knight Pickens, 22, Garden City, was eastbound on Homer Road just east of 182 Street.

The driver lost control&nbsp;due to speed. The pickup traveled into the ditch and rolled.

EMS transported&nbsp;Pickens to Russell Regional Hospital.&nbsp; A passenger Tabatha Lynn&nbsp;Yakubovich, 38, Garden City, was not transported for treatment despite a complaint of pain. Both were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

available.&nbsp; Suffice is to say, much of
the state needs rain.&nbsp; Last week’s column
discussed planting decisions with the variable soil moisture conditions in our
area.&nbsp; Today, let’s explore how plant
roots grow and react to soil moisture conditions. 

Seeds imbibe water, activate, and
start to germinate.&nbsp; The first structure
to emerge is the seed root (radicle) and it grows downward in response to
gravity.&nbsp; For dicots such as soybeans and
alfalfa, the radicle develops into the primary plant root, the taproot.&nbsp; In grasses like corn, wheat, and soybeans,
the plant develops seminal roots along which along with the radicle supply the
plant with water and nutrients initially.&nbsp;
However, the primary root system for these grasses soon starts to form
above where the seed was planted.&nbsp; This
is why grasses have a minimum planting depth so there is room between the seed
and soil surface for the root system to form.&nbsp;
Dicots on the other hand, since the taproot forms from the radicle
simply should be deep enough in the soil for adequate moisture to germinate and
grow.&nbsp; 

The
result of the previous paragraph is the deeper taproot/lateral root system of
dicots (broadleaves).&nbsp; Grasses though
have a shallower fibrous root system closer to the soil surface.&nbsp; The benefit for the taproot system is the
ability to extract water from deeper in the soil profile, if it’s there.&nbsp; The benefit to the grasses shallow fibrous
root system is the ability to more efficiently use water in the upper soil
profile.&nbsp; This about it.&nbsp; While we remember the intense rainfall and
storms, the vast majority of precipitation events here are 0.25 inches or
less.&nbsp; This rainfall doesn’t penetrate
deeply into the soil.&nbsp; This, along with
regular fires, are the reason the prairie is a grassland.&nbsp; Grasses are better equipped to thrive under
prairie conditions.

The
taproot versus the shallow fibrous root system is also why crops like soybeans,
alfalfa, and canola are much more sensitive to saturated soils than plants like
corn and grain sorghum.&nbsp; 

Next,
where do roots take in water and nutrients?&nbsp;

are dividing and elongating, behind the root cap.&nbsp; Little is taken in by the mature root
cells.&nbsp; That is why older parts or the
root system produce root hairs to aid in water and nutrient uptake.&nbsp; So, for a healthy root system, it must
constantly be elongating and producing new cells.&nbsp; As you notice the above ground growth
occurring, the root system is doing the same.&nbsp;


Now
for the important point.&nbsp; Roots don’t
grow through dry soil to wet soil.&nbsp; Dry

Barton Ag Instructor Dr. Vic Martin - Soil Moisture and Plant Roots

The journey from a potential genetic cross to the latest released wheat variety requires years of testing by public and private wheat breeders. They keep their eye on every aspect of agronomic performance&nbsp;from&nbsp;disease resistance to standability. Equally important is the partnership between wheat breeders and the Wheat Quality Lab at Kansas State University. Researchers at the lab help streamline the wheat breeding process by ensuring only lines with acceptable or superior milling and baking performance become the varieties Kansas wheat producers eventually plant and harvest.&nbsp;

“Agronomic performance and end-use quality are both critically important when selecting wheat varieties for commercial production,” said Aaron Harries, Kansas Wheat vice president of research and operations. “Supported by the two-penny-per-bushel wheat checkoff, the Kansas Wheat Quality Lab provides breeders, researchers and producers with the information they need to select which wheat lines to advance and which varieties to grow.”

Breeders like Guorong Zhang, K-State wheat breeder based at the K-State Agricultural Research Center in Hays, create about 800 new experimental lines each year - the critical step in a decade-long research process.&nbsp;However, not all of these lines have acceptable flour and baking qualities. Early sorting of which lines do or do not meet those standards saves time and cost for further testing down the road.&nbsp;

“Quality is an important trait for breeders; we don’t want to release a variety with poor quality,” Zhang said. “Thanks to the lab, they can evaluate all our advanced breeding lines. Based on the lab testing, we can see the lines with poor quality, and we will not continue those lines.”

The Kansas Wheat Quality Lab&nbsp;annually&nbsp;tests 350 to 400 advanced lines from the K-State wheat breeding programs.&nbsp;It takes until year five in the breeding program to have enough seed to run preliminary quality tests like protein content and mixograph. But, as lines go through more field testing, more seeds are harvested from each line, allowing for more extensive quality evaluations.&nbsp;

The final step is to take the flour, add water, yeast, sugar and salt and bake a pup loaf of bread, following standard protocols. Researchers then examine the quality of that bread - from the volume of the loaf to the crumb.&nbsp;

The combined results of these tests&nbsp;are given&nbsp;back to K-State wheat breeders, who use the information to help determine which lines to advance in their breeding programs. The milling and baking tests&nbsp;are repeated&nbsp;each year as lines are in the advanced stages of the program, meaning by the time a variety is released, breeders have four to five years of quality data available.&nbsp;

In addition to experimental lines, the lab tests 30 to 40 samples each year as a final evaluation before they are released by public and private wheat breeders throughout the Great Plains.&nbsp;The results are submitted&nbsp;back&nbsp;to the Wheat Quality Council, which compiles the results into an annual report.&nbsp;

Sunflower Summer Program to run May 25 - Aug.11

United Way of Central Kansas has not changed its mission, just its location. At the end of April, the non-profit moved from its Williams Street office in Great Bend to its new location at 2000 Washington Ave. Director Charell Owings said the move has been a good one.

"We were looking at an increase in rent at our prior location and an opportunity became available with Central Kansas CASA to move offices and move with them," she said. "It took away the element of our steps. I don't know if anyone had ever walked up those stairs before but they're pretty steep and brutal. It took that element out of it. It has been a godsend to move offices."

UWCK is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving lives and strengthening communities throughout Central Kansas. Owings said United Way was a beneficiary of some of that same kindness during the move.

"We have had some really generous donors from Fuller Industries, Adams Brown, that have donated all the office furniture, so we have not had to pay for any of that," she said. "That has just been phenomenal to not have to worry about that aspect of things."

UWCK will maintain its business hours of 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Several Stuff the Bus campaigns are planned for Barton County in July.

United Way of Central Kansas operating from new Great Bend location

A native Kansan has returned to her home state to serve clients as an esthetician at Renue Salon, Spa &amp; Fashion Boutique, 1419 Main, Great Bend.

Nikki Botticello, originally from Salina, recently joined Renue, offering waxing, facials and body treatments.

“I treat a wide age range of clients for conditions such as sun damage, dry skin and acne,” Botticello said. “Waxing also is a big part of my skin-care specialties. While I am aware that some people believe waxing is painful, I would enjoy the chance to surprise them.

“I use certain methods and techniques that make the process easy for my clients,” she explained. “Many of them say that if they had known that waxing doesn’t have to be uncomfortable, they would have started the treatments sooner. It is all in the technique.”

In addition, she said, the effects of waxing last up to several weeks longer than shaving.

Botticello also noted she is equipped with a Skin Classic machine that removes impurities and skin tags.

She has been at Renue only a short time but indicated that her first impressions of the salon’s services and personnel have exceeded her expectations.

“This is a beautiful facility,” she said. “There is such a variety of services for men and women performed by true professionals. Renue has it all.”

Botticello has been a licensed esthetician for 20 years and has worked in the spa industry for more than 25 years. She earned her esthetician certificate in 2003 at Las Vegas; she also attends industry conferences and completes continuing education to keep up-to-date on the latest techniques.

“I worked in spa settings in Las Vegas and the Dallas area, and opened my own studio in 2010,” she said. “This led to the 2018 opening of Smooth Effects, which was my own spa in Frisco, Tx.

“I am excited to bring my business back to my home state. It is quite gratifying to join this talented group of women at Renue.”

Botticello’s parents, Larry and Briana Apel Ernst, live in Great Bend.

The Shafer Gallery held an opening reception for the BaRTaRT Faculty, Student and Staff Exhibition on at the end of the semester, and awards were given to Barton students participating in the student art competition.

This year’s guest judge was ceramic artist Bambi Freeman. She gave critiques of the award-winning artwork and words of encouragement to the student artists. Shafer Gallery Director Alyssa Bliven said the annual show was an exciting exhibition of talent.

“This year's ‘Bart Art’ Exhibition features pieces created by Barton faculty, staff, and students, alongside contributions from our guest Judge, Bambi Freeman,” she said. “Bambi, a talented local artist, teaches art at Central Plains High School and serves as a professional artist for Speedball, a well-known art supply company. The show presents a diverse range of artworks, spanning from drawing and painting to ceramics and fiber works. It's inspiring to witness the creativity flourishing on campus, especially among the students.

Eagle Radio's news week in review

Zak Mirz has turned fatherhood into a magic act. A first-generation American, Mirz was just one year old when his father was murdered while closing his Italian restaurant in Texas. Mirz's first special, "Ticket for One," was a love letter to his father. Now with a daughter of his own, Mirz has again incorporated fatherhood into his new special, "Flashes of Magic," which he will be performing at the Crest Theater on Friday, June 7 at 7 p.m.

"This new tour is me becoming a father and having a daughter in my life," Mirz said. "The whole show is about becoming a father. The greatest magic trick you can ever give to yourself is seeing the world through the lens of a child, full of curiosity, awe, and wonder. It's magic."

Mirz's father was born in Iran, and his mother was born in Afghanistan. They moved to the United States to live the American Dream. That dream was cut short when Mirz was just one, but he never learned the truth about his father until he was eight.

"When you found out, you're sad and depressed," said Mirz. "For me, I wanted to keep the death of my father a secret. Magic was the perfect art form for me to run to because it's an art form all about secrets."

Around that time, Mirz was watching an Iranian television station at his grandmother's house when a David Blaine special came on. Mirz's future gained clarity. 

"It was very unusual to see an American magician pop up," he said. "We're just watching it and we're all fascinated. It was the first time I saw magic, and I was telling myself that's what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. So I did."

Mirz recently appeared on The CW's "Penn &amp; Teller: Fool Us" series where he fooled the famed Las Vegas comedians. As a prize, he will close out a Penn &amp; Teller show on May 30 in Las Vegas. He also served as a magic advisor for Blaine's 2020 special, "The Magic Way."

"Magic is a very small world," Mirz said. "We rub elbows a lot with the people who got us started in magic. It's like a David Blaine thing to do. He got my number and Facetimed me. I picked up and it was David Blaine on a motorcycle in L.A. traffic. He was like, 'I'm doing a new TV special for ABC. I heard you do a thing with knives and I want you to teach it to me.'"

Knives have become one of Mirz's specialties. The tool was on full display when he fooled Penn &amp; Teller.

"If you ask magicians what's the first thing that pops into their mind when they think of me, it's probably knives," he said. "I'm known as 'The Knife Guy' in the magic industry, but I'm more known for the storytelling in magic. The magic show isn't just a magic show, it's a journey I take the audience on, from me being a child who struggled, and also redemption and what it means for their lives as well."

"Flashes of Magic," will feature all new tricks crafted by Mirz and shaped into a story. He estimates only one or two out of every 100 ideas actually make it to the stage in one of his shows.

"Sometimes I'll really love the magic trick," he said. "I feel like it's a very strong magic trick to show to people. What I try to do is figure out the story behind it. A first-generation American, Mirz was just one year old when his father was murdered while closing his Italian restaurant in Texas. Mirz's first special, "Ticket for One," was a love letter to his father. Now with a daughter of his own, Mirz has again incorporated fatherhood into his new special, "Flashes of Magic," which he will be performing at the Crest Theater on Friday, June 7 at 7 p.m."This new tour is me becoming a father and having a daughter in my life," Mirz said. "The whole show is about becoming a father. The greatest magic trick you can ever give to yourself is seeing the world through the lens of a child, full of curiosity, awe, and wonder. It's magic."Mirz's father was born in Iran, and his mother was born in Afghanistan. They moved to the United States to live the American Dream. So I did."Mirz recently appeared on The CW's "Penn &amp; Teller: Fool Us" series where he fooled the famed Las Vegas comedians. As a prize, he will close out a Penn &amp; Teller show on May 30 in Las Vegas. He also served as a magic advisor for Blaine's 2020 special, "The Magic Way.""Magic is a very small world," Mirz said. "We rub elbows a lot with the people who got us started in magic. It's like a David Blaine thing to do. He got my number and Facetimed me. I picked up and it was David Blaine on a motorcycle in L.A. traffic. He was like, 'I'm doing a new TV special for ABC. Mirz bringing special blend of magic, story to Great Bend June 7

Being a parent is never easy, but it can be especially difficult for those without a foundation of support. The Kansas Children's Service League (KCSL), with an office in Great Bend, wants to provide that support. Connie Cale, supervisor of the local office, said the goal is simple.

"We want to help keep children at home," she said on KVGB 1590/95.5 FM's "County Edition." "We don't children to be removed, so we work with the families to overcome any obstacles they may have as far as the children being at home, and we basically focus on parent-child interactions because we feel like it starts at the very beginning."

Families are referred to KCSL in a variety of ways, including through the Barton County Health Department, area hospitals, schools, neighbors, and even self-referrals.

"Really, in order to refer, all it takes is permission from the parent or parent-to-be, their name, and their phone number," Cale said. "We call them and we take it from there."

Typically, the home-visiting program is for pregnant mothers-to-be or those with infants not older than four months. Once the family is enrolled, KCSL will work with the entire family until the child reaches three years of age, or in some instances, up to five years of age. The goal is to improve living situations for families to better the family dynamic.

"We believe in order to give kids the best chance at life, we need to help to alleviate some of the obstacles the parents might have so they can focus more on their kids," Cale said.

Kansas Children's Service League strives to make families better

As this year’s legislative session ends, it would be easy to focus on the overwhelming partisan conflict and stalemate that has become a reality in Kansas politics. However, legislative Democrats and Republicans have been able to make progress by working together on several criminal justice policies.

In April, Governor Kelly signed into law Senate Bill 458, which implements new reforms to the Kansas Standard Asset Seizure and Forfeiture Act. Efforts like this aim to establish clear and fair guidelines for law enforcement when they attempt to seize private property in the investigation of a crime. According to the Office of the Governor, these reforms require “additional steps to initiate the civil asset seizure process and requires clear and convincing evidence in order to move forward with seizure.” These measures help prevent abuses of power and safeguard citizens’ property rights.

Civil forfeiture reform often brings together unlikely allies by tapping into libertarian beliefs about reigning in government power and liberal commitment to creating a more just criminal justice system. Working across party lines, this bill was passed unanimously.

The Kansas legislature also passed into law an increase in the compensation available to crime victims in the Crime Victims Assistance Fund. The result is that victims will now be eligible for a maximum weekly compensation of $800, compared to $400 previously. Being the victim of a crime can cause many types of harm, including financial harm. State-funded assistance programs can help victims cover medical expenses, including counseling, as well as lost wages. This provides victims greater stability, which in turn can promote healing. Once again, this bill passed unanimously earning praise from both Governor Kelly and Attorney General Kris Kobach.

And finally, Governor Kelly signed a “Good Samaritan” bill into law earlier this month. Senate Bill 419 provides immunity to those seeking help for themselves or others in the event of a drug overdose. Citing the importance of addressing the fentanyl crisis, legislators on both sides of the aisle came together to pass this bill unanimously.

This law reduces the hesitation to call for assistance in the case of an overdose by eliminating the fear of legal consequences. This immunity coupled with the wide public availability of Naloxone, a medicine that reverses an opioid overdose, will save lives in Kansas. Further, “Good Samaritan” laws foster a more supportive environment for individuals struggling with substance use disorders, potentially opening pathways to treatment and recovery, rather than punishment. Prior to this bipartisan win, Kansas was one of only two states that did not have legal protections for those reaching out for assistance in cases of overdose.

While we shouldn’t expect ideological foes to agree on much in terms of the politically controversial issues of the day such as reproductive rights and taxation, these three bills, passed unanimously by a Republican-controlled legislature and signed into law by a Democratic Governor, are proof that bipartisan progress is possible in Kansas.

The program makes investments that improve safety, access, or mobility and implement new transportation technology.&nbsp; Included in the approved projects was a traffic signal battery back-ups project for the City of Great Bend receiving $58,802 in KDOT funds. “My administration is delivering technological advancements&nbsp;to increase transportation safety in every corner of the state,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said.&nbsp;“Through collaboration with local entities, this investment supports innovative transportation improvements in rural and urban communities.”&nbsp; All transportation system projects are eligible for Innovative Technology funding. Examples of projects selected for technology upgrades in this round include aviation and rail upgrades, traffic engineering and school zone enhancements, and truck simulators for CDL (commercial driver’s license) program expansion.&nbsp; State funding for the 13 projects will be enhanced by a minimum 25% local match from each recipient, resulting in a total innovative technology investment of more than $5.3 million. The program is part of the Kelly administration’s bipartisan 10-year, $10 billion Eisenhower Legacy Transportation Program, also known as IKE. “New and emerging technologies offer the potential for a safer, more efficient transportation system,”&nbsp;said&nbsp;Transportation Secretary Calvin Reed. “This latest round of Innovative Technology projects demonstrates how Kansas communities are proactively turning to technology to improve operations for now and the future.”&nbsp; Projects selected through the Innovative Technology program for FY 2024 include:&nbsp;

In the past, when an outdoor sporting event was taking place and thunderstorms
were approaching, there was somewhat of a guessing game when the game should be
suspended and resume with lightning in the area. 

Those guessing days are over
for the Great Bend Recreation Commission and local organizations with the Perry
Weather app. Rec Aquatics Director Megan Hammeke said the app gives users clear
instructions that align with the Rec’s safety policies, taking the guesswork
out of the weather safety decision-making.


"We can also get future forecasting with the app," said Hammeke. "The pool has the same protocol with a 30 minute delay. When I'm not at the pool, my lifeguards won't have to make that call. The app will clear the pool for us."

The Rec’s guidelines call for outdoor events to be suspended for 30 minutes if
lightning strikes within 10 miles. The Perry Weather app alerts the Rec staff
of lightning strikes, begins a timer when play can resume and resets with each
subsequent strike.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

festival will mark the 13th year for the event. Great Bend

a new variety of entertainment each year. 

The biggest change this year is the
addition of a parade at 5 p.m. on Friday, May 31 organized by
Great Bend Alive, the city’s downtown development arm of Great Bend Economic
Development.


"After the parade, there is still Fridays on Forest and the car show is still going to happen around the square," said Hayes. "We still have our only outdoor movie for the year, showing the movie 'Migration' for the kids with free popcorn and lemonade."

Games, contests, food, tours, entertainment and music will return for the
three-day festival at Jack Kilby Square. On Saturday, June 1, a
new addition to June Jaunt will include a live play.


"Great Bend Community Theatre is partnering with us," said Hayes. "They are doing a one-act play at 12 p.m. Saturday written by John O'Connor. It'll be one quick theatrical play at the bandshell. Bring your chair and come check that out."

Parade, theatrical play added to Great Bend’s June Jaunt

As of April 1, 2024, any large-scale solar developer could pull
permits to build solar plants. The Barton County Planning Commission’s recommendations
were approved by the County Commission after solar development popped up with
Acciona Energy’s proposal to construct a solar farm near Cheyenne Bottoms. 

At
Tuesday’s meeting, Barton County Commission Chair Barb Esfeld said there have
been no solar development permits requested yet.


"I just want everybody to know that there is still the whole process to go through," said Esfeld. "It didn't mean once that map was approved that solar development is automatically here. Maybe no permits will be taken out. Who knows?"

The county’s approved guidelines includes a two-mile, no-build zone around
Cheyenne Bottoms, the wetlands northeast of Great Bend. 


With the county’s regulations in place, the City of Great Bend will begin the
process to potentially amend their zoning ordinance to include solar farm and
battery storage for projects within the three-mile jurisdiction of the city.

Assistant
City Administrator Logan Burns said the first Great Bend Planning Commission
meeting regarding solar development is Tuesday, May 28 at 7 p.m.
at City Hall. 

"This is just the start of discussion," said Burns. "We went through the county regulations, and city staff put in our tweaks of what we would suggest in those scenarios. This is the first of several meetings."

Once the Great Bend Planning Commission finishes the zoning regulations, the

 </figure>By COLE REIF Great Bend PostAs of April 1, 2024, any large-scale solar developer could pull
permits to build solar plants. The Barton County Planning Commission’s recommendations
were approved by the County Commission after solar development popped up with
Acciona Energy’s proposal to construct a solar farm near Cheyenne Bottoms. At
Tuesday’s meeting, Barton County Commission Chair Barb Esfeld said there have
been no solar development permits requested yet.
"I just want everybody to know that there is still the whole process to go through," said Esfeld. "It didn't mean once that map was approved that solar development is automatically here. Maybe no permits will be taken out. Who knows?"The county’s approved guidelines includes a two-mile, no-build zone around
Cheyenne Bottoms, the wetlands northeast of Great Bend. 
With the county’s regulations in place, the City of Great Bend will begin the
process to potentially amend their zoning ordinance to include solar farm and

City Administrator Logan Burns said the first Great Bend Planning Commission
meeting regarding solar development is Tuesday, May 28 at 7 p.m.
at City Hall. "This is just the start of discussion," said Burns. "We went through the county regulations, and city staff put in our tweaks of what we would suggest in those scenarios. This is the first of several meetings."Once the Great Bend Planning Commission finishes the zoning regulations, the

No permits pulled yet for solar development in Barton County

The Kansas Wetlands Education Center offers a monthly series to get kids outside exploring and off their devices. KWEC’s WILD programs are free of charge and don’t require registration.

On June 14 from 10-11 a.m., kids can discover what types of mammals live on the KWEC nature trail. Participants will check Sherman traps, a box-style trap to catch live small mammals. They will identify, collect data, and then release any mammals captured. In addition, participants will study some of the tracks in the area and look for any other clues mammals may have left along the trail.

On July 12 - 10-11 a.m.&nbsp;If it flies, crawls, jumps, or swims, kids will want to catch it during our July WILD activity. After crafting a bug catcher, armed with nets, participants will head out to the KWEC nature trail in search of insects. They will see what types of insects they catch and then identify them. After walking the trail, participants will examine and hold the KWEC classroom Vietnamese Walking Sticks, Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches, and Giant Millipedes.

Drop-in Nature Crafts Join KWEC on select Fridays from 1-4 p.m. this summer for a free, come-and-go nature craft. Before completing the craft, attendees will participate in a quick learning activity about the craft theme. The activities are geared toward kids 5-12, but all ages are welcome.

June 14 - Seed Kaleidoscope - craft and decorate a mesmerizing kaleidoscope using seeds, beads, and other nature items for a unique display of images.

June 21 - Pollinator Puddler - Celebrate Pollinator Week by creating a small dish with jewels and rocks to create a water source for bees and butterflies.

July 5 - Snake Skin Suncatcher - using sheds from the KWEC snakes, create a unique suncatcher to place in the window.

July 12 - Hammered Flower Banner - after selecting colorful blooms from the KWEC pollinator garden and marsh area, pound the colors onto a banner to take home!

For those who want a more immersive nature experience, KWEC is offering&nbsp;Nature Discovery Camps. Camps feature outdoor exploration, including animal and plant investigations through fun activities, nature-related crafts, and games.

The Sunflower Summer Program benefits Kansas families with school-aged children, encouraging them to explore and fall in love with Kansas. This program gives affordable access to tourism attractions across the state and supports the Kansas tourism economy. Eligible Kansas families can download the Sunflower Summer App to claim tickets to participating venues.
