Dakotah Sanders freely acknowledges that in the past he was many things – violent, untrustworthy, manipulative, self-centered, and a poor husband, father, son, brother and friend.

Today, however, Sanders is in long-term recovery and will share his story with a private group, as well as with the general public.

The private presentation is set for 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 9. The public part of the event begins at 6:30 p.m. the same day at The Center for Counseling &amp; Consultation’s Heritage Building, 1225 Patton in Great Bend. Seating is limited.

“Private participants will learn about my past with abuse and addiction,” Sanders said. “They also will hear about my recovery and the mindsets I developed along the way.

“The public will hear about my journey to become a published author and the self-limiting beliefs that had to be conquered to do what I am doing.”

One reason Sanders encourages addicts to participate in the event is because they often believe nobody understands what they are going through.

“This ideology is isolating in and of itself,” he noted. “If we stop to think about it, emotions are universal. We all experience hardship, adversity and sadness, for example. I invite you to consider that through suffering and resilience, we are all truly connected.”

Sanders works for Horizons Community Mental Health Center in Hutchinson as a peer-support specialist and mentor. In addition, he is a junior in a bachelor’s degree program, working toward his license for addiction counseling.

He scores 9 out of 10 on the Adverse Childhood Experience test. “My life experience has led me to advocating for people struggling with addiction and mental-health issues,” Sanders commented.

In his book, “Endure: To Suffer with Patience,” Sanders chronicles the life that led him “to seeking solace in the deceptive embrace of drugs to numb the searing agony inflicted by a troubled past. Each day was a precarious tightrope walk, while I navigated the minefield of a volatile household.”

Kevin Ford, The Center’s director of its Substance Use Program, encouraged clients and the public to mark the Sept. 9 event on their calendars.

“Dakotah can go a long way to reduce the stigma of substance use and help people understand that, while recovery is difficult, they can be successful,” Ford said. “We think he will relate well to his audiences as he tells his story.

“He also seems to be a very solution-based person who can offer guidance and advice that will resonate with those who participate in the event.”

Anticipation for the new To the Stars Kansas license plate has grown since the Kansas Department of Revenue (KDOR) put several designs up for a public vote last year. Last week, KDOR announced the new designs have been available as of Aug. 12. Paige Volkel, deputy treasurer at the Barton County Treasurer's Office, said that does not mean new tags with the previous blue Ad Astra design can be replaced with the new design.

"To receive these new To the Stars plates, those are only issued during renewal time and if you've purchased a new vehicle and you're not transferring a plate," she said.

Kansas switched to its new license plates at the beginning of the year. Those plates still featured the old Ad Astra design but included a different format of letters and numbers on the plate and no longer have raised letters. The old embossed plates had deteriorated significantly over the years, posing challenges for law enforcement.

"The reflective coating that's on the plates is only good for five years," said Volkel." A lot of people don't know that, and that is a big reason why these plates are changing. These embossed plates that have the raised letter texts, those are the ones that are getting replaced."

The treasurer's office is asking the public to not come in asking for the new tag design except during tag renewals or title work on a new vehicle. Damaged tags may also be replaced at any time.

"Just a quick reminder that the treasurer's office, for tags and taxes, is now located on the first floor of the Barton County Courthouse, room 107," said Volkel. "The doors are shut but please come on in. If we are busy with customers and there is no room to sit inside the office, we do have chairs outside in the lobby for people to sit."

Other information from the Kansas Dept. of Revenue: Kansas is replacing some types of license plates that have aged out. These are embossed (raised plate text) plates on the standard Kansas Capitol (Dome) and the light blue Ad Astra backgrounds. Your plate qualifies. This means for you: - A new plate with new and different plate text has been issued to your vehicle and a paper 30-Day Temporary plate is provided.

- The Division of Vehicles has come to an agreement with Kansas law enforcement that the paper plate does not have to be put on the vehicle for this license plate reissuance. The temporary paper plate should be folded with the registration and carried in the vehicle while waiting for the new metal plate.

- The registration receipt with the yellow 2025 expiration decal is enclosed. That yellow 2025 decal must be applied to the upper right hand corner of the new metal plate when it arrives in the mail within 30 days of your transaction. The number on the decal should match the number of the plate.

- Put the new metal plate on your vehicle after applying the decal.

- Your old plate must be destroyed or securely disposed of after removal. Warning - fraudulent plate use can happen if the plate is simply tossed in the trash or not securely stored. Someone could take it, and use it illegally, causing problems for you.

Barton Co. Treasurer: New tag design is out but exchanges not allowed

Someone recently came into the Cottonwood Extension office with a tiny insect, asking what it is. Fortunately, it had a distinctive long snout. So that meant it was a weevil and I was able to narrow it down considerably and identify it as a rice weevil. I did get verification from J.P. Michaud, entomologist at the Ag Research Ct. in Hays too.

It just so happened that was the same day my newspaper article is due. Therefore, I thought I would write about pantry or stored product pests. Some of the more common pantry or kitchen insect pests are probably the Indian meal moth, sawtoothed grain beetles, and flour beetles.

Several insects, commonly referred to as pantry or kitchen pests, infest dry or stored food products in the home. Most are either beetles or moths. In the case of beetles, both the adult and larval stages may be damaging while only the larvae of moths are destructive. Infestations may be noted when these insects are found in some products, but more commonly when the adults are seen crawling or flying about the kitchen or pantry.

Since most of these insects are of tropical or semi-tropical origin, they live and breed best under warm, humid conditions – conditions often found in kitchen cupboards. Since most do not hibernate, reproduction is continuous throughout the year and populations can build up rapidly if they are left undisturbed.

Inspection - always keep in mind that many pantry pests are strong fliers and that their larvae can crawl some distance from a source of infestation. The source of infestation is usually limited to a small area such as the kitchen, or a single cabinet, or a single susceptible product. Before you attempt control, find out this source and eliminate it.

This is not always an easy job. Check all the materials mentioned as susceptible products. Do not overlook the fact that a sealed container may be infested because the lid may be loose enough to allow pantry pests.

Sterilization - it is possible to kill pantry pests by putting lightly infested packages in the refrigerator freezer compartment for a least two or three days.

Sanitation - periodically clean all shelves in storage areas. Many pantry pests can breed in food particles that spill or sift from packages and accumulate in cracks and corners. The insects can then infest food packages on the shelves later.

Buy only small quantities of foods susceptible to infestation, especially in the summer. Carefully examine these foods when you get them to be sure they are free of pests.

Whenever possible, dry foods can be stored in clean glass or metal containers with tight fitting lids. (Empty coffee cans with plastic lids make excellent storage containers.) Clean containers thoroughly before placing fresh food in them. Never leave them undisturbed for long periods of time. Storing these food products in the refrigerator or freezer will prevent infestation.

Insecticides - are not recommended for use against pantry pests.

Eagle Radio's news week in review

One of the largest parades in Kansas will work its way down Main Street in Hoisington for the 128th time on Monday, Sept. 2, as part of the annual Labor Day Celebration. The big weekend will also feature some new events. Hoisington Chamber Director Karen Baldyga said that begins Friday, Aug. 30 at 5 p.m. with the Thunder in the Wetlands Kart Nationals at Bicentennial Park.

"It's our first time ever having go-kart races out here," she said. "This is a big event for us. It will take place on Friday and Saturday over Labor Day weekend."

Pit gates open at 4 p.m. that Friday and general admission gates open at 5 p.m. on both nights. Admission is $10 for those 13 and older, $5 for 6-12-year-olds, and free for anyone five years of age and younger. Registration fees to race begin at $10 for rookies. Food and beverage options will be available. Another new event this year is an antique tractor pull that will take place after Monday's parade at 1 p.m.

"It will be a free spectator sport," Baldyga said. "Great Plains Antique Tractor Club is partnering with us, along with several other businesses, to help us get this on the schedule for this year. It should be fun. USD 431 has given us permission to use what was the football practice field out back of the Hoisington Activity Center."

Admission is free to watch tractors from 1959 and earlier pull a sled with weights from 500 to 10,000 pounds. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs.

Go-karts, antique tractor pull new at Hoisington Labor Day Celebration

PAWNEE COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just after 5p.m. Friday in Pawnee County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2022 Honda passenger vehicle driven by Gavin Lee, 18, Lee's Summit, Missouri, was eastbound on Kansas 156 four miles west of Larned.&nbsp;

The vehicle traveled left of center and struck the driver's side of a westbound 2023 Ram 1500 driven by Brian Rodney, 39,&nbsp; Holcomb.

EMS transported Lee and a passenger Alexis Johnson, 18, Lee's Summit, to the hospital in Larned. Rodney was not injured. All three were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Pilot Club of Great Bend always accepting new members to serve community

Laundry for Love, Pacesetter campaigns, Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, and Stuff the Bus are just a few ways United Way of Central Kansas benefits residents in Barton and Pawnee Counties. In an effort to raise funds to continue those programs and more, UWCK Director Charell Owings said the popular Beer &amp; BBQ fundraiser will return Sunday, Oct. 6 at Dry Lake Brewing in downtown Great Bend.

"It's $40 to come, and that includes four beer tastings, so you get four half-pours and you also get a plate of barbecue provided by A&amp;G Catering," she said. "We have not created the menu yet for that but we usually have four different - we call them sample sizes, but it's like a full meal."

The menu for this year's Beer &amp; BBQ fundraiser includes ribs, beef sliders, smoked pork loin, and cowboy chicken soup. There will also be a sweet treat and snacks out for all guests.

UWCK has had a busy July and August with a murder mystery dinner and Stuff the Bus campaigns in Great Bend, Larned, Ellinwood, and Hoisington. Attention now turns to local schools and the Reality U program.

"We're going to be adding in 10th graders this year," Owings said. "They'll have seen it in eighth grade, they'll see it again in 10th grade, then we hit them again in senior year with our #RealWorld program. That's where we dive a little deeper into some of the topics that are important to them as they leave home for the first time."

Dolly Parton's Imagination Library provides free books monthly for children up to five years of age. In early January of this year, the Great Bend City Council approved the
renewed lease near the Great Bend Municipal Airport to Kestrel, Inc. Kestrel
owns the buildings on the just over a half acre of land on 4th
Street. 

In recent years, Kestrel has sublet the ground and buildings to
Med-Trans, also known as Eagle Med for their operations. City Attorney Allen
Glendenning said that sublease was just renewed.


"All we lease to Kestrel is the ground," said Glendenning. "They own the buildings. They are subleasing the ground plus their buildings. They are bringing in more money than they're paying us, but they're also giving more."

The previous lease between the city and Kestrel prohibited subletting without
the city’s written consent. The city council approved the sublease agreement
and authorized the city administrator to give written consent on behalf of the
city.


Kestrel’s approved lease pays the city $1,125 per year for the remaining four
years on the lease.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

🎤Forward Ever: Former 'Agriculture today' host Eric Atkinson

Handwashing might seem like a routine activity in today’s world, especially after COVID, but that wasn’t always the case. Have you ever wondered where we got this idea? I learned about it in graduate school and was fascinated by how it came about. It wasn’t until the 19th century that handwashing was actually researched and the birth of modern handwashing came about. And the physician that pioneered this work was ridiculed!

Ignaz Semmelweis (1840s) was Hungarian physician that discovered handwashing with chlorinated lime solutions dramatically reduced the incidence of puerperal fever (childbed fever) in his obstetric wards. Despite his findings, his ideas were initially met with skepticism. In the 1800’s the understanding of disease transmission and germ theory were rudimentary. Semmelweis noticed that there was a stark difference in mortality rates between two maternity wards at the Vienna General Hospital. The ward attended by medical students had a much higher mortality rate compared to the ward run by midwives.

With further investigation he found that medical students moved between the dissection room and the maternity ward which we know now that they carried infectious material from the cadavers to the women in labor causing the high mortality rates. In 1847, Semmelweis introduced a policy requiring medical students and doctors to wash their hands with a chlorinated lime solution before examining patients. Handwashing lowered rates of puerperal fever and mortality rates in the maternity ward. However, he faced professional isolation and resistance from his colleagues.

Semmelweis’s methods were dismissed and ridiculed by the medical community and his findings were not accepted until later with the work of Joseph Lister (1860s) and Louis Pasteur that furthered microbiology and germ theory that Semmelweis’s work was accepted. Joseph Lister was a British surgeon who built on Semmelweis’s work by promoting antiseptic techniques in surgery. Lister’s use of carbolic acid (phenol) as an antiseptic led to a significant decrease in post-surgical infections.

Moving forward to the 20th century commercialization of antiseptic agents and soap improved hand hygiene practices, especially in the medical field but then later would move to the general public with Handwashing Campaigns in the 1970s-1980s. Handwashing became a public health issue.

Today handwashing is recognized as one of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent the spread of illness.

Extension agents promote handwashing often whether it’s cooking in the kitchen, outdoor parties, or in the classroom or workplace.

Hands pick up bacteria during daily routines, including gardening, taking out the trash, driving, playing with pets and many other activities.

It only takes 20 seconds with soap and warm water or about the time it takes to sing the alphabet. Be sure to scrub your hands…because the bubbles really do pick up the dirt and take it away.

A fun way we teach this to kids (and adults) is through our Glo-Germ Handwashing program that uses a black light to show the germs on your hands before washing and how they are gone after handwashing. We can also teach high speed handwashing that helps students learn to wash hands quickly and efficiently to save water! KOERNER: Handwashing

The Central Kansas Christian Basketball League, with teams in Great
Bend, is looking for community business sponsors for the upcoming season. The
league, in its second year, is designed for students in 3rd grade through 6th
grade to play basketball, learn the fundamentals and build up future athletes
in the area. 

League President Ethan Thomas said the organization attempts to
give back to the youth and area businesses.


"We're trying to do as much locally as we can," said Thomas. "Trophies and medals are bought with the funds through Identifications in Great Bend. Different marketing items, such as banners for the league and schools, is through Mark's Custom Signs in Great Bend."

Along with Holy Family School and Central Kansas Christian Academy in Great
Bend, schools from Chase, Stafford and St. John compete in the league. Games
begin in late October and the season ends with a tournament just before
Christmas.

league, in its second year, is designed for students in 3rd grade through 6th
grade to play basketball, learn the fundamentals and build up future athletes
in the area. League President Ethan Thomas said the organization attempts to
give back to the youth and area businesses.
"We're trying to do as much locally as we can," said Thomas. "Trophies and medals are bought with the funds through Identifications in Great Bend. Different marketing items, such as banners for the league and schools, is through Mark's Custom Signs in Great Bend."Along with Holy Family School and Central Kansas Christian Academy in Great
Bend, schools from Chase, Stafford and St. John compete in the league. Games
begin in late October and the season ends with a tournament just before
Christmas.

No, those are not the infamous "murder hornets" flying around Barton County. While the historic outbreak of two broods of cicadas occurred earlier this year in the eastern United States, dry conditions in Kansas may be contributing to a higher number of large cicada killer wasps. Alicia Boor, agriculture and natural resources agent in the Cottonwood District for K-State Research and Extension, said while intimidating, the cicada killers are mostly harmless.

"They're just a huge wasp but they are not dangerous to humans at all," she said. "If you leave them alone, they'll leave you alone. They might try to dive bomb you a little bit. That's because they're trying to protect their territory, especially the males."

The flying insects are approximately two inches long with black and yellow-banded markings on the abdomen. The transparent wings are red-brown. Males establish an aerial territory and may hover around humans to determine if they are a threat but the males cannot sting. Females burrow 6-10 inches into the ground, typically in sandy or loose soil.

"With the drought, we do have maybe not quite as thick of lawns and maybe some dieback just because we haven't had the rain to be able to produce the vegetation we would like," Boor said. "That could be where you're seeing more of them."

While the wasps are generally harmless to humans, the same cannot be said for dog day cicadas. The female wasps find cicadas, sting and paralyze them, then drag them back to the burrow.

"They lay one single egg on top of the cicada, then bury it," said Boor. "When that egg hatches, it eats that cicada. That's its food source to be able to pupate. It pupates and stays underground until the next spring, then they come out the next June."

Females typically will not sting humans but may if they are stepped on with bare feet or grabbed with bare hands. Certain insecticides may be used to help control cicada killer populations but there are also natural ways to keep the insects away.

"If you're seeing them and don't want them around, try to discourage them by mulching or making sure the ground is covered," Boor said. "Otherwise, if you don't have that many of them, really watch them and admire how cool they are that that big of a wasp will drag that big of an insect into a burrow for the young's food source. I think that's really cool."

Large cicada killer wasps in Barton Co. not a threat to humans

Clara Barton Medical Center added Emilee Roberts, MA, CF-SLP, to their team of therapy professionals. As a recent graduate, Roberts is enthusiastic and looks forward to the positive contributions she will make to the Clara Barton team and community.

Originally from Chanute, KS, Roberts earned her Bachelor of Arts in Communication Sciences and Disorders in 2022, followed by her Master of Arts in Speech-Language Pathology in 2024, both from Wichita State University. Her commitment to academic excellence is evident from her summa cum laude honors and her membership in the Alpha Eta Honor Society. Roberts also received the College of Health Professions Highest GPA Award. 

“The most rewarding aspect of my work is building meaningful connections with patients and their families,” said Roberts. “Witnessing the joy on their faces when they achieve goals that once seemed challenging is inspiring and I enjoy improving patients' quality of life by helping them learn to communicate, swallow, and eat safely.” 

Before officially joining Clara Barton Therapy Services in June, Roberts completed her internship there, gaining hands-on experience.

“We’re thrilled that Emilee has chosen to join our therapy team and begin her career as a Speech Therapist at Clara Barton,” said Natalie Bieberle, Director of Therapy Services. “Her internship with us gave her beneficial insight into our team and our commitment to quality care, making her the perfect fit as we continue to grow to better serve our community and surrounding areas.”

Roberts comes from a family rooted in the medical field, with both of her parents serving as healthcare professionals. This background is what inspired her to pursue a healthcare career. She has two older sisters and a younger brother.

In her free time, Roberts enjoys traveling, baking, reading, bike riding, and spending quality time with her friends and family. She is also an avid sports fan, cheering on the St. Louis Cardinals and the Kansas City Chiefs.

Barton Community College’s 16th annual Wounded Warrior Golf Scramble, which benefits wounded soldiers from Fort Riley, is set for Sept. 14.

The Wounded Warrior Golf Scramble is an opportunity to support our Soldiers and thank them for their dedicated service to our country.

Shotgun start is set for 9:30 a.m. at the Rolling Meadows Golf Course in Junction City. Standard four-person golf scramble rules apply.

Individual golfers not on a team will receive assistance in joining teams still being formed. Members of the Barton men’s and women’s golf teams will be available to join any team that needs extra players.

The entry fee is $60 per person, which includes the day of golfing, a cart, a meal, and participation gifts. The tournament is limited to the first 22 teams to sign up.

Barton’s Wounded Warrior golf scramble to benefit Fort Riley soldiers

One of the great fall traditions in Kansas is just days away as dove hunting season begins on Sept. 1. Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Manager Jason Wagner reminds dove hunters they will need a Kansas Harvest Information Program (HIP) stamp to legally hunt the birds. He also said the upcoming season looks promising based on a recent survey of the area.

"There are spots where there are just hundreds and hundreds of them sitting on the roads and on the powerlines," he said. "That's a pretty good indicator on the population. I think that cold front we had a couple weeks ago pushed some birds down."

Teal season begins on Sept. 14 in the low plains east of U.S. 283 Highway, which includes Barton County. Federal and state waterfowl stamps are required to legally hunt migratory birds, and Wagner said the physical federal stamp will not be required this year.

"They have changed that regulation now where they are accepting electronic stamps," he said. "So what's going to happen now is when you buy your federal duck stamp, you have it on your app, or it's just printed on a piece of paper if you go to Walmart and buy your hunting license that way. Then in March, they'll actually mail you the physical stamp."

In the past, the federal stamp required a signature to be valid. Many hunters collect the federal duck stamp and will continue to have that option with the stamps arriving after the hunting seasons.

He also said the upcoming season looks promising based on a recent survey of the area."There are spots where there are just hundreds and hundreds of them sitting on the roads and on the powerlines," he said. "That's a pretty good indicator on the population. I think that cold front we had a couple weeks ago pushed some birds down."Teal season begins on Sept. 14 in the low plains east of U.S. 283 Highway, which includes Barton County. Federal and state waterfowl stamps are required to legally hunt migratory birds, and Wagner said the physical federal stamp will not be required this year."They have changed that regulation now where they are accepting electronic stamps," he said. "So what's going to happen now is when you buy your federal duck stamp, you have it on your app, or it's just printed on a piece of paper if you go to Walmart and buy your hunting license that way. Then in March, they'll actually mail you the physical stamp."In the past, the federal stamp required a signature to be valid. Many hunters collect the federal duck stamp and will continue to have that option with the stamps arriving after the hunting seasons.

As part of this process, Governor Kelly directed state agencies to develop a plan that would dedicate $7 million to one-time state water plan funds to develop and implement solutions identified by the working group of stakeholders. This funding was approved by a bipartisan vote of the State Finance Council in November.
